Abstract
At present, the public health risks caused by pathogenic fungi are greater in China and have attracted great attention from disease control departments. Due to the difficulty in diagnosing fungal infections, the public health risk of pathogenic fungi is currently hidden in the unexplained pneumonia/encephalitis/fever syndrome and is not effectively appreciated. From the public health perspective, the mainly focused fungal pathogens include highly pathogenic fungi (including dimorphic fungi and dematiaceous fungi), pathogenic fungi that cause regional aggregation infections, and drug-resistant pathogenic fungi. However, due to the lack of systematic monitoring data, the disease burden related to pathogenic fungi cannot be accurately quantified and evaluated. Therefore, to effectively reduce the serious harm of fungal infections to the public, systematic monitoring of pathogenic fungi should be carried out nationally.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the association between exposure patterns of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and anxiety symptom trajectories in medical college students. Methods: A survey was conducted on first-year students from Anhui Medical College and Anqing Medical College, using the Childhood Abuse Questionnaire, Family Disability Questionnaire, Childhood Adverse Social Experience Item, and Anxiety Self Rating Scale. The baseline survey was conducted from November to December 2019, and two follow-up visits were conducted once every six months until November to December 2020. The latent class analysis (LCA) was used to analyze the exposure patterns of ACEs. The latent class growth analysis (LCGA) was used to analyze the development trajectory of anxiety symptoms. The multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the correlation between different exposure patterns of ACEs and the trajectory of anxiety symptom trajectories. Results: A total of 3 662 college students aged (19.2±1.0) were surveyed. The LCA showed that the exposure patterns of ACEs could be divided into the "high ACEs" group (13.4%), "high neglect/emotional abuse" group (25.7%), "high family dysfunction" group (6.9%), "high neglect" group (27.1%), and "low ACEs" group (26.3%). The LCGA divided anxiety trajectories into four groups: "high anxiety decline" (7.1%),"anxiety increase "(4.1%), "moderate anxiety"(52.9%), and "low anxiety"(35.9%). Using the low ACEs group as a reference group, compared with the low anxiety trajectory, the high ACEs group, high neglect/emotional abuse group, high family dysfunction group, high neglect group, and medium to high-level anxiety trajectory were all associated with an increased risk (P<0.05). Conclusion: There is heterogeneity in ACEs exposure patterns among medical college students, and ACEs exposure patterns are important influencing factors for anxiety symptom trajectories.

Abstract
Herpes zoster (HZ) is a common viral disease that mainly affects the elderly population with a rising incidence. The occurrence of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the dominant and thorny complication, which thus further aggravates the disease burden. Vaccination and clinical application of small molecules and biologics for certain diseases are identified as new risk factors for the development of HZ development. HZ vaccination has emerged as a pivotal prevention measure against the occurrence of HZ. Refining the diagnosis and early standardized antiviral treatment of HZ is the key to improve standardized management strategy.

Abstract
Objective: Based on the Mendelian randomization analysis, to assess the causal relationship between DNA methylation levels of Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) and obesity. Methods: A case-control study was carried out, including 1 021 individuals [obesity (visceral fat index ≥10) vs. no obesity (visceral fat index <10) was 440 vs. 581] from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. MethylTargetTM target region methylation sequencing technology was used for testing the DNA methylation level of JAK2. logistic regression models were used to assess the association between the DNA methylation level of JAK2 and obesity. With SNP as the instrumental variable, the association between the DNA methylation level of JAK2 and obesity was explored by using the Mendelian randomization analysis method. Results: There was a positive association between Chr9:4984943 (one DNA methylation site in the promoter of JAK2) and obesity, and the OR (95%CI) was 1.22(1.04-1.42). Methylation level of five sites in the exon of JAK2 (Chr9:4985378, Chr9:4985404, Chr9:4985407, Chr9:4985409 and Chr9:4985435) were negatively associated with obesity, the corresponding OR (95%CI) were 0.53 (0.29-0.95), 0.58(0.36-0.93), 0.69 (0.49-0.97), 0.72 (0.53-0.99) and 0.58 (0.35-0.98) , respectively. Mendelian randomization analysis showed that there was a causal relationship between the DNA methylation levels of JAK2 and obesity, and the corresponding β (95%CI) were -1.985 (-3.520 - -0.450),-3.547 (-6.301 - -0.792) and -3.900 (-6.328 - -1.472) for Mendelian randomization method of inverse variance weighted, Mendelian randomization method of median based and Maximum-likelihood method, respectively. Conclusion: This study supported there was a causal relationship between the DNA methylation level of JAK2 and obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological, clinical and mycological characteristics of invasive candidiasis (IC) in China. METHODS A ten-year retrospective study including 183 IC episodes was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Beijing, China. RESULTS The overall incidence of IC from 2010-2019 was 0.261 episodes per 1,000 discharges. Candidemia (71.0%) was the major infective pattern; 70.3% of the patients tested positive for Candida spp. colonization before IC and the median time to develop an invasive infection after colonization was 13.5 days (interquartile range: 4.5-37.0 days). Candida albicans (45.8%) was the most prevalent species, followed by Candida parapsilosis (19.5%), Candida glabrata (14.2%) and Candida tropicalis (13.7%). C. non- albicans IC was more common in patients with severe anemia ( P = 0.018), long-term hospitalization ( P = 0.015), hematologic malignancies ( P = 0.002), continuous administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics ( P < 0.001) and mechanical ventilation ( P = 0.012). In vitro resistance testing showed that 11.0% of the Candida isolates were resistant/non-wild type (non-WT) to fluconazole, followed by voriconazole (9.6%), micafungin (3.8%), and caspofungin (2.9%). Fluconazole was the most commonly used drug to initiate antifungal therapy both before and after the proven diagnosis (52.6% and 54.6%, respectively). The 30-day and 90-day all-cause mortality rates were 24.5% and 32.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION The incidence of IC has declined in the recent five years. C. non- albicans contributed to more than half of the IC cases. Fluconazole can be used as first-line therapy if resistant strains are not prevalent. Prospective, multi-center surveillance of the clinical and mycological characteristics of IC is required.

Abstract
Although Trichoderma species are usually considered to be culture contaminants, an increasing number of case reports have demonstrated their pathogenicity. Current diagnostic tools, including fungal culture, radiology, histopathology, and direct microscopy examination, are often unable to differentiate the pathogenicity of 'fungal contaminants' such as Trichoderma species in patients. Accurate diagnostic tools for 'fungal contaminants' infection have become the urgent needs. To that end, we applicated laser capture microdissection (LCM) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to confirm T. longibrachiatum infection for the first time. A 57-year-old man presented with a cough and hemoptysis lasting for more than 40 days. Computed tomography scan revealed a mass at the left hilum. In addition to pulmonary spindle cell carcinoma, fungal hyphae were also detected in histopathological examination. The cultured fungus was identified as T. longibrachiatum using molecular procedures. The results from DNA sequencing of DNA obtained by LCM revealed the identical result. Antifungal susceptibility testing revealed resistance to itraconazole, fluconazole and flucytosine. The patient was managed with oral voriconazole for 4 months. No relapse of Trichoderma infection was observed at a year follow-up visit. Although there are potential disadvantages, LCM-based molecular biology technology is a promising diagnostic tool for 'fungal contaminants' infection.

Abstract
Objective: To develop a fast track transfer to intensive care unit (ICU) for the perioperative high-risk elderly patients after hip fracture surgery and analyze the preliminary clinical effect of the application. Methods: From January 2014 to December 2017, before the application of postoperative fast track transfer to ICU, the clinical data of 195 elderly patients with hip fracture were included in a retrospective analysis. Among 195 hip fracture patients, 18 were transferred to ICU post operation (non-fast track group). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to investigate relevant risk factors for transferring to ICU after hip fracture surgery. Based on risk factors acquired from the analysis and clinical experience, the fast track transfer to ICU for the perioperative high-risk elderly patients after hip fracture surgery was constructed according to the preliminary and experiential criteria. From January 2018 to December 2019, the clinical data of 70 patients (fast track group) who were transferred to ICU after hip fracture surgery through the fast track were collected and compared with non-fast track group. Results: Multivariate regression analysis revealed that American Society of Anesthesiologists classification(≥Ⅲ) (OR=4.260, 95%CI:1.157-15.683, P=0.029), pre-hospital stage (≥48 h) (OR=4.301, 95%CI:1.212-15.266, P=0.024), hemoglobin concentration at admission(<90 g/L) (OR=7.979, 95%CI:1.936-32.889, P=0.004), coronary heart disease as one comorbidity(OR=6.063, 95%CI:1.695-21.693, P=0.006) were independent risk factors for transferring to ICU after hip fracture surgery. There were no significant difference in gender, age, fracture type, hemoglobin concentration at admission and time of pre-hospital stage between the non-fast track group and fast track group(all P>0.05). However, the number of comorbidities in the fast track group was significantly higher than that in the non-fast track group (Z=-1.995, P=0.046). The time to surgery, postoperative hospital stay, and length of hospital stay in fast track group were all significantly less than those in non-fast track group (Z=-2.121, -2.726, -3.130, all P<0.05). Also, there were fewer medical consultations needed and fewer patients who stayed in ICU more than or equal to 2 nights in fast track group than that in non-fast track group(all P<0.05). There were no significant difference in the rate of patients who transferred from the general ward to ICU after transferring from ICU to the general ward, the proportion of patients who received more than or equal to 4 departments, operation time, hospitalization expense, mortality during hospitalization, 30-day mortality and 90-day mortality after operation between the two groups(all P>0.05). Conclusions: The fast track constructed in this study can reduce time to surgery, postoperative hospitalization stay and length of hospitalization stay for the perioperative high-risk elderly patients with hip fractures and is a specific clinical application of eras concept based on multidisciplinary team.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the correlation between quadriceps thickness (thickness of rectus femoris and vastus intermedius), cross-sectional area (cross-sectional area of the rectus femoris) and the strength score of the Medical Research Council (MRC) in critically ill patients, and to explore the changes in the length of hospital stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), and to determine the diagnostic value of muscle changes in the ICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW). Methods: Patients admitted to the Department of Critical Care Medicine from March to October in 2019 who were expected to stay for more than five days were enrolled in this study. The cross-sectional area of the rectus femoris, the thickness of the rectus femoris, the thickness of the vastus intermedius on the first day of the ICU (D(1)), day 3 (D(3)), and day 5 (D(5)), day 7 (D(7)), out of ICU (D(ICU)), and the MRC muscle strength scores on the day of out of ICU prospectively were collected in all the patients, and the correlation and the regularity of quadriceps changes were analyzed. MRC>48 points on the day of dismiss of ICU were used as the standard for the diagnosis of ICU-AW, and the relationship between muscle changes of the quadriceps and ICU-AW was analyzed. The t test or the Mann-Whitney U test was used for data analysis. Results: A total of 45 patients were included, including 25 males and 20 females, aged (58±10) years. The rectus femoris cross-sectional area, rectus femoris thickness, and vastus intermedius thickness decreased with the length of ICU hospital stay. The cross-sectional area, thickness of the rectus femoris muscle, and the vastus intermedius thickness were positively correlated with the MRC score (r=0.452, 0.411, 0.402, all P<0.05), and the changes were all negatively correlated with the MRC score (r=-0.682, -0.740, -0.734, all P<0.05). On the 3rd day after ICU admission, the best cutoff value of rectus muscle cross-sectional area atrophy rate for discrimination of ICU-AW was 6.0%, with a sensitivity of 66.7% and a specificity of 77.8%; on the 5th day, the best cutoff value of rectus femoris thickness atrophy rate was 14.5%, with a sensitivity of 77.8% and a specificity of 66.7%; on the 7th day, the best cutoff value of vastus intermedius thickness atrophy rate was 19.9%, with a sensitivity of 70.6% and a specificity of 87.5%. Conclusion: Bedside ultrasound measurement of the quadriceps femoris cross-sectional area and thickness has certain diagnostic value for ICU-AW, and can identify patients with ICU-AW early.

Abstract
Formal, large-scale, multicenter studies of invasive mould infection (IMI) in Asia are rare. This 1-year, retrospective study was designed to assess the incidence and clinical determinants of IMI in centers in five countries (Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, China, India). Patients treated in a single year (2012) were identified through discharge diagnoses, microbiology, and histopathology logs, and entered based on published definitions of IMI. A total of 155 cases were included (median age 54 years; 47.7% male). Of these, 47.7% had proven disease; the remainder had probable IMI. The most frequent host factors were prolonged steroid use (39.4%) and recent neutropenia (38.7%). Common underlying conditions included diabetes mellitus (DM; 30.9%), acute myeloid leukemia (19.4%), and rheumatologic conditions (11.6%). DM was more common in patients with no recent history of neutropenia or prolonged steroid use (P = .006). The lung was the most frequently involved site (78.7%), demonstrating a range of features on computed tomography (CT). Aspergillus was the most common mould cultured (71.6%), primarily A. fumigatus and A. flavus, although proportions varied in different centers. The most often used antifungal for empiric therapy was conventional amphotericin. Ninety-day mortality was 32.9%. This is the first multicenter Asian study of IMI not limited to specific patient groups or diagnostic methods. It suggests that DM and rheumatologic conditions be considered as risk factors for IMI and demonstrates that IMI should not be ruled out in patients whose chest features on CT do not fit the conventional criteria.

Abstract
Background Current guidelines recommend echinocandins as first‐line therapy for candidemia. However, several non‐Candida yeast are non‐susceptible to echinocandins (echinocandin non‐susceptible yeast, ENSY), including Cryptococcus, Geotrichum, Malassezia, Pseudozyma, Rhodotorula, Saprochaete, Sporobolomyces and Trichosporon. In laboratories that are not equipped with rapid diagnostic tools, it often takes several days to identify yeast, and this may lead to inappropriate presumptive use of echinocandins in patients with ENSY fungemia. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of ENSY species during a 1‐year, laboratory surveillance programme in Asia. Methods Non‐duplicate yeast isolated from blood or bone marrow cultures at 25 hospitals in China, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand were analysed. Isolates were considered to be duplicative if they were obtained within 7 days from the same patient. Results Of 2155 yeast isolates evaluated, 175 (8.1%) were non‐Candida yeast. The majority of non‐Candida yeast were ENSY (146/175, 83.4%). These included Cryptococcus (109 isolates), Trichosporon (23), Rhodotorula (10) and Malassezia (4). The proportion of ENSY isolates (146/2155, 6.7%) differed between tropical (India, Thailand and Singapore; 51/593, 8.6%) and non‐tropical countries/regions (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan; 95/1562, 6.1%, P = 0.038). ENSY was common in outpatient clinics (25.0%) and emergency departments (17.8%) but rare in intensive care units (4.7%) and in haematology‐oncology units (2.9%). Cryptococcus accounted for the majority of the non‐Candida species in emergency departments (21/24, 87.5%) and outpatient clinics (4/5, 80.0%). Conclusions Isolation of non‐Candida yeast from blood cultures was not rare, and the frequency varied among medical units and countries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the cutaneous manifestations in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and related factors. METHODS Patients admitted to Department of Gastroenterology Peking University First Hospital from January 1994 to December 2014 and diagnosed as UC were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Skin disorders were confirmed by the dermatologists. Clinical data were collected and compared between patients with and without cutaneous manifestations. RESULTS Among the total 373 UC patients, there were 34 cases (9.1%) with cutaneous manifestations, including 11 pyoderma gangrenosum, 8 erythema nodosum, 6 eczema, 3 psoriasis, 2 pemphigus, 1 granulomatous cheilitis, 1 ichthyosis, 1 acne rosacea, and 1 impetigo. The skin manifestations may occur after the diagnosis, simultaneously or even before the diagnosis of UC, which were 24, 7 and 3 patients respectively. The mean age in patients with skin lesions was (47.2±12.1) years, male to female ratio 0.79∶1. More patients with skin manifestations had severe activity of UC compared with non-skin group [50.0%(17/34) vs 25.1%(85/339), P=0.01]. In addition, the proportion of extensive colitis in skin lesion group was significantly higher than that in non-skin group [76.5%(26/34) vs 54.6%(185/339), P=0.04]. CONCLUSIONS The cutaneous manifestations associated with UC are polymorphic, erythema nodosums and pyoderma gangrenosums are the most common skin lesions seen in UC patients. Skin lesions occur concurrently, pre or post the diagnosis of UC. Skin lesions in UC patients suggest more severe disease activity. Clinicians need to pay more attention to this group.

miR-71b regulation of insulin/IGF-1 signaling during starvation in planarians. GENETICS AND MOLECULAR RESEARCH 2015; 14:11905-14. Abstract
Planarians, which have a large population of stem cells called neoblasts, are molecularly tractable model systems used in the study of regeneration. However, planarians have strong resistance to hunger and have developed growth arrest strategies. For example, they can change their size and undergo growth regression during starvation periods. The results of the current study show that the microRNA, miR-71b, and the insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway have important functions in the development of starvation-induced planarians. We demonstrate tissue-specific expression of miR-71b using in situ hybridization. By employing real-time polymerase chain reaction, we provide evidence that miR-71b is upregulated in starvation-induced planarians. Furthermore, we validate and verify the target genes of miR-71b.

Incidence and species distribution of candidaemia in Asia: a laboratory-based surveillance study. Clin Microbiol Infect 2015; 21:946-53. [PMID: 26100373 DOI: 10.1016/j.cmi.2015.06.010] [Citation(s) in RCA: 103] [Impact Index Per Article: 11.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/09/2014] [Revised: 06/04/2015] [Accepted: 06/06/2015] [Indexed: 11/19/2022]
Abstract
The epidemiology of candidaemia varies between hospitals and geographic regions. Although there are many studies from Asia, a large-scale cross-sectional study across Asia has not been performed. We conducted a 12-month, laboratory-based surveillance of candidaemia at 25 hospitals from China, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. The incidence and species distribution of candidaemia were determined. There were 1601 episodes of candidaemia among 1.2 million discharges. The overall incidence was 1.22 episodes per 1000 discharges and varied among the hospitals (range 0.16-4.53 per 1000 discharges) and countries (range 0.25-2.93 per 1000 discharges). The number of Candida blood isolates and the total number of fungal isolates were highly correlated among the six countries (R² = 0.87) and 25 hospitals (R² = 0.77). There was a moderate correlation between incidence of candidaemia and the intensive care unit (ICU)/total bed ratio (R² = 0.47), although ICUs contributed to only 23% of candidaemia cases. Of 1910 blood isolates evaluated, Candida albicans was most frequently isolated (41.3%), followed by Candida tropicalis (25.4%), Candida glabrata (13.9%) and Candida parapsilosis (12.1%). The proportion of C. tropicalis among blood isolates was higher in haemato-oncology wards than others wards (33.7% versus 24.5%, p 0.0058) and was more likely to be isolated from tropical countries than other Asian countries (46.2% versus 18.9%, p 0.04). In conclusion, the ICU settings contribute, at least in part, to the incidence variation among hospitals. The species distribution is different from Western countries. Both geographic and healthcare factors contribute to the variation of species distribution.

Abstract
Background and objectives Superficial fungal skin infections are treated using topical antifungals. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy of a single application of 1 % terbinafine film-forming solution (FFS) versus placebo for the treatment of tinea pedis in the Chinese population. Methods Six centers in China randomized 290 patients in a 1:1 ratio to receive either 1 % terbinafine FFS or FFS vehicle (placebo) once on the affected foot/feet. Efficacy assessments included microscopy and mycologic culture, and assessing clinical signs and symptoms at baseline, and at weeks 1 and 6 after the topical treatment. All adverse events were recorded. Results At week 6, 1 % terbinafine FFS was superior to placebo for effective treatment rate (63 vs. 8 %); clinical cure (30 vs. 6 %); mycological cure (86 vs. 12 %); negative microscopy (90 vs. 24 %); and negative mycological culture (90 vs. 27 %): all p ≤ 0.001 and clinically relevant. At week 6, 1 % terbinafine FFS was clinically superior to placebo for the absence of: erythema (69 vs. 29 %); desquamation (33 vs. 8 %); and pruritus (70 vs. 30 %): all p ≤ 0.001 and clinically relevant. At week 6, differences in the average total signs and symptoms scores were significantly lower for 1 % terbinafine FFS versus placebo (p ≤ 0.001). Both 1 % terbinafine FFS and placebo were safe and well tolerated based on adverse events and investigator and patient assessments. Conclusions This double-blind, randomized, multicenter study demonstrated one single topical application of 1 % terbinafine FFS was safe and effective in the treatment of tinea pedis in the Chinese population.

A cross-sectional study of sputum handling by and supervision of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis treated at home in China. Biosci Trends 2012; 6:296-302. Abstract
Disposal of sputum from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) who are treated at home is an important aspect of preventing the spread of TB. However, few studies have examined disposal of sputum by patients with TB who are treated at home. Patients with pulmonary TB who are treated at home were surveyed regarding sputum handling and supervision. A cross-sectional survey of a representative sample of patients with pulmonary TB who are treated at home was conducted in Shandong Province. Participants were individuals with TB who had been registered with a local agency responsible for TB control. Participants completed a questionnaire with both qualitative and quantitative questions. How sputum was handled was determined and factors associated with sputum disposal were analyzed using a non-parametric test, logistic regression, and content analysis. Responses were received from 720 participants. Patients expectorated sputum 4.56 ± 10.367 times a day, and 68.6% of patients responded that they correctly disposed of their sputum. Supervision as part of TB control focused on the efforts of health agencies and paid little attention to waste management by patients. A non-parametric test showed that sputum disposal was significantly associated with gender, age, education, sputum smear results, attitudes toward waste management, and attitudes toward supervision (all p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that gender (OR = 0.482, 95% CI: 0.329-0.704), sputum smear results (OR = 1.300, 95% CI: 1.037-1.629), and level of education (OR = 0.685, 95% CI: 0.528-0.889) were associated with receipt of TB health education (all p < 0.05). Sputum handling by and supervision of patients with pulmonary TB who are treated at home is severely wanting. From a policy perspective, special attention should be given to the definition, details, and methods of supervision of waste management by patients with TB to give them relevant health education and enhance their willingness to be supervised. A financial incentive should be provided to health workers supervising management of TB-related waste.

Abstract
This paper reviews the application of molecular techniques in heterotrophic hydrogen production studies. Commonly used molecular techniques are introduced briefly first, including cloning-sequencing after polymerase chain reaction (PCR), denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and quantitative real-time PCR. Application of the molecular techniques in heterotrophic hydrogen production studies are discussed in details, focusing on identification of new isolates for hydrogen production, characterization of microbial compositions in bioreactors, monitoring microbial diversity variation, visualization of microbial distribution in hydrogen-producing granular sludge, and quantification of various microbial populations. Some significant findings in recent hydrogen production studies with the application of molecular techniques are discussed, followed by a research outlook of the heterotrophic biohydrogen field.

Abstract
The present study aimed at detecting the association of ovine major histocompatibility complex class II (Ovar II) DRB1 gene second exon and susceptibility or resistance to hydatidosis in three sheep breeds of Sinkiang. The MHC-DRB1 second exon was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from DNA samples of healthy sheep and sheep with hydatidosis. PCR products were characterized by the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique. Five restriction enzymes, Mval, Haelll, Sacl, Sacll, Hin1l, were used, yielding 14 alleles and 31 restriction patterns. Frequencies of patterns Mvalbc, Hin1lab, Sacllab, Haelllde, Haellldf, Haellldd (P < 0.01) in Kazakh sheep, Saclab (P < 0.05) in Duolang sheep, and Haelllab, Haelllce, Haelllde, Haelllee (P < 0.01) in Chinese Merino (Sinkiang Junken type) sheep, were significantly higher in healthy sheep compared with infected sheep. These results indicated a strong association between these patterns and hydatidosis resistance. In contrast, the frequencies of Mvalbb, Saclaa, Hinl lbb, Haelllef (P < 0.01) and Haelllab (P < 0.05) in Kazakh sheep, Saclbb, Haelllae, Hin1lab (P < 0.05), Haelllaa, Haelllbe, Haelllef (P < 0.01) in Duolang sheep, Sacllaa (P < 0.05) and Haelllbd, Hin1lbb, Haelllcf, Haelllef (P < 0.01) in Chinese Merino sheep (Sinkiang Junken type) were significantly lower in healthy sheep compared with infected sheep. This indicated a strong association between these patterns and hydatidosis susceptibility. In addition, sheep with the pattern of Haelllef demonstrated a high hydatidosis susceptibility (P < 0.01) in all three breeds, while sheep with the pattern Haelllde demonstrated significant hydatidosis resistance (P < 0.01) in Kazakh and Chinese Merino sheep (Sinkiang Junken type). These results suggest that the Ovar-DRB1 gene plays a role in resistance to hydatidosis infection in the three sheep breeds.

Abstract
This epidemiological survey was a retrospective study on three nodes during the past three decades on fungal infections representing the China, including Taiwan. Owing to rare publications reporting on dynamic epidemiological trends in the pathogen epidemiology in China, we surveyed the isolation rates and pathogenic fungi from 8 representative districts in China using uniform identification with uniform methodology. The pathogenic fungi isolation rates and species obtained from 1986 (n=9,096), 1996 (n=19,009), and 2006 (n=33,022) suggested that Trichophyton rubrum was the commonest organism cultured in 1980s (45.4%) and 1990s (34.5%), but Candida albicans increased significantly and reaching to its peak (26.9%) in 2006s' survey, and has become the most common isolate of fungal infections in China currently. In addition, Candida glabrata became the most common non-albicans species of Candida in 2006s' survey. At the same time, the incidence of molds also gradually increased. According to comparative analysis of the results of these three surveys, we found apparent differences in the isolation rates of different pathogenic fungi and the forefront 10 species in China varied significantly, and the dermatophytes decreased markedly, while yeasts, especially the Candida species and the molds, increased gradually during the past three decades. Less dermatophytic infections may suggest better access to healthcare or increase in Candida species indicated higher incidence of hospital acquired infections.

Mitigation of arsenic accumulation in rice with water management and silicon fertilization. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 2009; 43:3778-3783. Abstract
Rice represents a major route of As exposure in populations that depend on a rice diet. Practical measures are needed to mitigate the problem of excessive As accumulation in paddy rice. Two potential mitigation methods, management of the water regime and Si fertilization, were investigated under greenhouse conditions. Growing rice aerobically during the entire rice growth duration resulted in the leastAs accumulation. Maintaining aerobic conditions during either vegetative or reproductive stage of rice growth also decreased As accumulation in rice straw and grain significantly compared with rice grown under flooded conditions. The effect of water management regimes was consistent with the observed effect of flooding-induced arsenite mobilization in the soil solution. Aerobic treatments increased the percentage of inorganic As in grain, but the concentrations of inorganic As remained lower than in the flooded rice. Silicon fertilization decreased the total As concentration in straw and grain by 78 and 16%, respectively, even though Si addition increased As concentration in the soil solution. Silicon also significantly influenced As speciation in rice grain and husk by enhancing methylation. Silicon decreased the inorganic As concentration in grain by 59% while increasing the concentration of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) by 33%. There were also significant differences between two rice genotypes in grain As speciation. This study demonstrated that water management Si fertilization, and selection of rice cultivars are effective measures that can be used to reduce As accumulation in rice.

Anomalous line shape of the cross section for e{+}e{-}--> hadrons in the center-of-mass energy region between 3.650 and 3.872 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2008; 101:102004. Abstract
We observe an obvious anomalous line shape of the e;{+}e;{-}--> hadrons total cross sections in the energy region between 3.700 and 3.872 GeV. It is inconsistent with the explanation for only one simple psi(3770) resonance with a statistical significance of 7sigma. The anomalous line shape may be explained by two possible enhancements of the inclusive hadron production near the center-of-mass energies of 3.764 and 3.779 GeV, indicating that either there is likely a new structure in addition to the psi(3770) resonance around 3.773 GeV, or there are some physics effects reflecting the DD[over ] production dynamics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficiency of Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated transformation of Aspergillus fumigatus by using pyrG as a recessive selectable marker. METHODS FAP1 and SHO1 genes target sequences, composed of a selectable marker pyrG and the flanking sequences of the FAP1 and the SHO1 genes, were cloned into a binary plasmid pDHt/sk, respectively. The produced plasmids were transformed into A. tumefaciens. The A. tumefaciens and uracil auxotroph A. fumigatus were cocultured in induction medium without uricil and uridine at 24 degrees C for 48 h. To inhibit growth of A. tumefaciens and to select transformants, the cultures were transferred to 37 degrees C and incubated for another 48 h. RESULTS In this study, A. tumefaciens-mediated transformation of A. fumigatus produced high homologous recombination rates, which was 44% (7 of 16) for FAP1 and 35% (7 of 20) for SHO1. CONCLUSION Our study showed that A. tumefaciens-medidated transformation by using pyrG as a recessive selectable marker is an efficient tool for target gene deletion of A. fumigatus.

Abstract
The decays of J/psi --> etaphif(0)(980)[eta --> gammagamma, phi --> K(+) K(-), f(0)(980) --> pi(+)pi(-)] are analyzed using a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. A structure at around 2.18 GeV/c(2) with about 5 sigma significance is observed in the phif(0)(980) invariant mass spectrum. A fit with a Breit-Wigner function gives the peak mass and width of m = 2.186+/-0.010(stat)+/-0.006(syst) GeV/c(2) and Gamma = 0.065+/-0.023(stat)+/-0.017(syst) GeV/c(2), respectively, which are consistent with those of Y(2175), observed by the BABAR Collaboration in the initial-state radiation process e(+)e(-) --> gamma(ISR) phif(0)(980). The production branching ratio is determined to be Br(J/psi --> etaY(2175))Br(Y(2175)- -> phif(0)(980))Br(f(0)(980) --> pi(+)pi(-)) = [3.23+/-0.75(stat)+/-0.73(syst)] x 10(-4), assuming that the Y(2175) is a 1(--) state.

Primary renal zygomycosis is a rare fungal infection, and only 45 cases have been reported in the literature. The major etiologic agents of the disease were Mucor spp., Rhizomucor spp., Rhizopus spp. and Absidia spp. Here we report a case of primary renal zygomycosis due to Rhizopus oryzae infection. The patient had systemic lupus erythematosus and was treated with corticosteroids. He had frequent micturition, urodynia and passed amorphous and membranous-looking masses through the urethra several times prior to admission. Histopathological examination of the mass showed numerous broad and nonseptate hyphae. Rhizopus oryzae was isolated from the mass. We also reviewed the clinical features of primary renal zygomycosis in the literature.

Abstract
A broad peak is observed at low K+K- invariant mass in J/psi-->K+K-pi(0) decays found in a sample of 5.8x10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. The statistical significance of the broad resonance is much larger than 5sigma. A partial wave analysis shows that the J;{PC} of this structure is 1--. Its pole position is determined to be [1576(-55)(+49)(stat)-91+98(syst)] MeV/c(2)-i/2[818(-23)(+22)(stat)-133+64(syst)] MeV/c(2). These parameters are not compatible with any known meson resonances.

Observation of two new N* peaks in J/psi-->ppi-n and ppi+n decays. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2006; 97:062001. Abstract
The decay J/psi-->NNpi provides an effective isospin 1/2 filter for the piN system due to isospin conservation. Using 58x10(6) J/psi decays collected with the Beijing Electromagnetic Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand J/psi-->ppi-n+c.c. events are obtained. Besides the two well-known N* peaks at around 1500 MeV/c2 and 1670 MeV/c2, there are two new, clear N* peaks in the ppi invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV/c2 and 2030 MeV/c2 with statistical significance of 11sigma and 13sigma, respectively. We identify these as the first direct observation of the N*(1440) peak and a long-sought missing N* peak above 2 GeV/c2 in the piN invariant mass spectrum.

Abstract
An enhancement near threshold is observed in the omega(phi) invariant mass spectrum from the doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-suppressed decays of J/psi-->gamma(omega)phi, based on a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. A partial wave analysis shows that this enhancement favors JP=0+, and its mass and width are M=1812(+19)(-26)(stat)+/-18(syst) MeV/c2 and Gamma=105+/-20(stat)+/-28(syst) MeV/c2. The product branching fraction is determined to be B(J/psi-->gammaX)B(X-->omega(phi))=[2.61+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.65(syst)]x10(-4).

Abstract
The decay channel J/psi --> gamma(pi)(+)pi(-)eta is analyzed using a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. A resonance, the Chi(1835), is observed in the pi(+)pi(-)eta invariant-mass spectrum with a statistical significance of 7.7 sigma. A fit with a Breit-Wigner function yields a mass M = 1833.7 +/- 6.1(stat) +/- 2.7(syst) MeV/c(2), a width Tau = 67.7 +/- 20.3(stat) +/- 7.7(syst) MeV/c(2), and a product branching fraction B(J/psi --> gammaChi) . B(Chi --> pi(+)pi(-)eta) = [2.2 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.4(syst)] x 10(-4). The mass and width of the Chi(1835) are not compatible with any known meson resonance. Its properties are consistent with expectations for the state that produces the strong pp mass threshold enhancement observed in the J/psi --> gammapp process at BESII.

Intrathecal grafting of porcine chromaffin cells reduces formalin-evoked c-Fos expression in the rat spinal cord. Cell Transplant 2005; 14:353-65. Abstract
Chromaffin cells from the adrenal gland secrete a combination of neuroactive compounds including catecholamines, opioid peptides, and growth factors that have strong analgesic effects, especially when administered intrathecally. Preclinical studies of intrathecal implantation with xenogeneic bovine chromaffin cells in rats have provided conflicting data with regard to analgesic effects, and recent concern over risk of prion transmission has precluded their use in human clinical trials. We previously developed a new, safer source of adult adrenal chromaffin cells of porcine origin and demonstrated an in vivo antinociceptive effect in the formalin test, a rodent model of tonic pain. The goal of the present study was to confirm porcine chromaffin cell analgesic effects at the molecular level by evaluating neural activity as reflected by spinal cord c-Fos protein expression. To this end, the expression of c-Fos in response to intraplantar formalin injection was evaluated in animals following intrathecal grafting of 10(6) porcine or bovine chromaffin cells. For the two species, adrenal chromaffin cells significantly reduced the tonic phases of the formalin response. Similarly, c-Fos-like immunoreactive neurons were markedly reduced in the dorsal horns of animals that had received injections of xenogeneic chromaffin cells. This reduction was observed in both the superficial (I-II) and deep (V-VI) lamina of the dorsal horn. The present study demonstrates that both xenogeneic porcine and bovine chromaffin cells transplanted into the spinal subarachnoid space of the rat can suppress formalin-evoked c-Fos expression equally, in parallel with suppression of nociceptive behaviors in the tonic phase of the test. These findings confirm previous reports that adrenal chromaffin cells may produce antinociception by inhibiting activation of nociceptive neurons in the spinal dorsal horn. Taken together these results support the concept that porcine chromaffin cells may offer an alternative xenogeneic cell source for transplants delivering pain-reducing neuroactive substances.

Abstract
Transplantation of adrenal medullary tissue for terminal cancer pain has been tested clinically, but this approach is not practical for routine use because of the shortage of organ donors and lack of tissue homogeneity. As a first alternative step, we have generated immortalized chromaffin cells over-expressing opioid peptides, namely met-enkephalin. Rat chromaffin cells have been genetically modified with vectors containing expression cassettes with either synthetic met-enkephalin or pro-enkephalin gene coding regions, fused with the nerve growth factor signal peptide for secretion. After stable transfection and differentiation in vitro, met-enkephalin and pro-enkephalin cells had higher met-enkephalin immunoreactivity and secreted met-enkephalin levels, compared to control cells containing the expression vector only. In the formalin hindpaw-injection model, 15 days after subarachnoid transplant of cells, grafts of met-enkephalin and pro-enkephalin cells significantly reduced the number of formalin-evoked c-fos immunoreactive spinal neurons in the spinal cord, compared to grafts of vector-alone chromaffin cells. The use of such expandable cell lines, for chronic spinal delivery of opiates, could offer an attractive and safe alternative strategy based on ex vivo gene therapy for the control of opioid-sensitive chronic pain.

Abstract
An enhancement near the m(p)+M(Lambda) mass threshold is observed in the combined pLambda and pLambda invariant-mass spectrum from J/psi-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. It can be fit with an S-wave Breit-Wigner resonance with a mass m=2075+/-12(stat)+/-5(syst) MeV and a width of Gamma=90+/-35(stat)+/-9(syst) MeV; it can also be fit with a P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance. Evidence for a similar enhancement is also observed in psi(')-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. The analysis is based on samples of 5.8x10(7)J/psi and 1.4x10(7)psi(') decays accumulated in the BES II detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.

Abstract
Adrenal medullary chromaffin cells synthetize and secrete a combination of pain-reducing neuroactive compounds including catecholamines and opioid peptides. Previous reports have shown that implantation of chromaffin cells into the spinal subarachnoid space can reduce both acute and chronic pain in several animal models. We recently demonstrated that human chromaffin cell grafts in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) could alleviate intractable cancer pain after failure of systemic opiates. However, wider application of this approach was limited by the limited availability of allogeneic donor material. Alternatively, chromaffin cells from xenogeneic sources such as bovine adrenal medulla were successful in the experimental treatment of pain, but recent concern over risk of prion transmission precluded use of bovine grafts in human clinical trials. The objective of the present study was to investigate the possibility of developing a new xenogeneic porcine source of therapeutic chromaffin cells because this strategy is currently considered the safest for transplantation in man. In the present study, we report the isolation and the characterization of primary porcine chromaffin cells (PCC) compared to bovine cells. We show, for the first time, that these cells grafted in the rat subarachnoid space can attenuate pain-related behaviors as assessed by the formalin test, a model of tonic pain. Moreover, in addition to behavioral studies, immunohistochemical analysis revealed robust survival of chromaffin cells 35 days after transplantation. Taken together, these results support the concept that porcine chromaffin cells may offer an alternative xenogeneic cell source for transplants delivering pain-reducing neuroactive substances.

Abstract
The decay psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L) is observed using psi(2S) data collected with the Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider; the branching fraction is determined to be B(psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L))=(5.24+/-0.47+/-0.48)x10(-5). Compared with J/psi-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L), the psi(2S) branching fraction is enhanced relative to the prediction of the perturbative QCD "12%" rule. The result, together with the branching fractions of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs (pi(+)pi(-) and K+K-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.

Abstract
We observe a narrow enhancement near 2m(p) in the invariant mass spectrum of pp pairs from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays. No similar structure is seen in J/psi-->pi(0)pp decays. The results are based on an analysis of a 58 x 10(6) event sample of J/psi decays accumulated with the BESII detector at the Beijing electron-positron collider. The enhancement can be fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function. In the case of the S-wave fit, the peak mass is below 2m(p) at M=1859(+3)(-10) (stat)+5-25(syst) MeV/c(2) and the total width is Gamma<30 MeV/c(2) at the 90% confidence level. These mass and width values are not consistent with the properties of any known particle.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the optimal venous tubing diameter for adult cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) to improve gravity drainage and to reduce priming volume. METHODS (A) Maximum bovine blood flow rates by gravity drainage were assessed in vitro for four different tubing diameters (1/2, 3/8, 5/16,1/4 inch) with three different lengths and various pre- and afterloads. Based on the results of (A) and multiple regression analyses, we developed equations to predict tubing sizes as a function of target flows. (C) The equations obtained in (B) were validated by ex vivo bovine experiments. (D) The clinically required maximal flows were determined retrospectively by reviewing 119 perfusion records at Zurich University. (E) Based on our model (B), the clinical patient and hardware requirements, the optimal venous tubing diameter was calculated. (F) The optimized venous tubing was evaluated in a prospective clinical trial involving 312 patients in Hangzhou. RESULTS For a mean body surface area of 1.83+/-0.2 m(2), the maximal perfusion flow rate (D) achieved with 1/2-inch (=1.27 cm(2)) venous tubing was 4.62+/-0.57 l/min (range: 2.50-6.24 l/min). Our validated model (B,C) predicted 1.0 cm(2) as optimal cross-sectional area for the venous line. New tubing packs developed accordingly were used routinely thereafter. The maximal flow rate was 4.93+/-0.58 l/min (range: 3.9-7.0) in patients with a mean body surface area of 1.62+/-0.21 m(2). CONCLUSION The new venous tubing with 1.0-cm(2) cross-sectional area improves the drainage in the vast majority of adult patients undergoing CPB and reduces the priming volume (-27 ml/m). Reduced hemodilution can prevent homologous transfusions if a predefined transfusion trigger level is not reached.

Activation of murine cytomegalovirus immediate-early promoter in cerebral ventricular zone and glial progenitor cells in transgenic mice. Glia 2001; 35:41-52. Abstract
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common infectious cause of congenital anomalies of the CNS in humans. We recently reported that the murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) immediate-early (IE) gene promoter directs astrocyte-specific expression in adult transgenic mice. In the present study, we analyzed the activation of the MCMV IE promoter in developing transgenic mouse brains and compared the activation with that of the Musashi 1 (Msi1) gene, which is expressed in neural progenitor cells, including neural stem cells. During the early phase of neurogenesis, the transgene was expressed predominantly in endothelial cells of the vessels, but not in neuroepithelial cells in which Msi1 was expressed. During later stages of gestation, expression of the transgene was largely restricted to the ventricular zone (VZ) in the CNS, similar to the expression of Msi1. In neurosphere cultures from transgenic embryos in the late phase of neurogenesis, the transgene was expressed in some cells of neurospheres expressing Msi1 and nestin. In neural precursor cells induced to differentiate from stem cells, expression of the transgene was detected in glial progenitor cells, expressing GFAP, nestin, and Msi1, but not in cells expressing MAP2 or MAG. In postnatal development, persistent expression of the transgene was observed in astrocyte lineage cells as was Msi1. These spatiotemporal changes of the MCMV IE promoter activity during development of transgenic mice correlated with susceptible sites in congenital HCMV infection. Moreover, this transgenic mouse model may provide useful model for analysis of the regulation of the switching of neuronal and astrocyte differentiation, and the maintenance of the astrocyte lineage.

Enterophilins, a new family of leucine zipper proteins bearing a b30.2 domain and associated with enterocyte differentiation. J Biol Chem 2001; 276:18352-60. Abstract
Enterocyte terminal differentiation occurs at the crypt-villus junction through the transcriptional activation of cell-specific genes, many of which code for proteins of the brush border membrane such as intestinal alkaline phosphatase, sucrase-isomaltase, or the microvillar structural protein villin. Several studies have shown that this sharp increase in specific mRNA levels is intimately associated with arrest of cell proliferation. We isolated several clones from a guinea pig intestine cDNA library. They encode new proteins characterized by an original structure associating a carboxyl-terminal B30.2/RFP-like domain and a long leucine zipper at the amino terminus. The first member of this novel gene family codes for a 65-kDa protein termed enterophilin-1, which is specifically expressed in enterocytes before their final differentiation. Enterophilin-1 is the most abundant in the small intestine but is still present in significant amounts in colonic enterocytes. In Caco-2 cells, a similar 65-kDa protein was recognized by a specific anti-enterophilin-1 antibody, and its expression was positively correlated with cell differentiation status. In addition, transfection of HT-29 cells with enterophilin-1 full-length cDNA slightly inhibited cell growth and promoted an increase in alkaline phosphatase activity. Taken together, these data identify enterophilins as a new family of proteins associated with enterocyte differentiation.
