Abstract
Emission source functions are extracted from correlation functions constructed from charged pions produced at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The source parameters extracted from these functions at low k(T) give first indications of a long tail for the pion emission source. The source extension cannot be explained solely by simple kinematic considerations. The possible role of a halo of secondary pions from resonance emissions is explored.

Abstract
Azimuthal correlations of jet-induced high-p(T) charged hadron pairs are studied at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The distribution of jet-associated partner hadrons (1.0<p(T)<2.5 GeV/c) per trigger hadron (2.5<p(T)<4.0 GeV/c) is found to vary with collision centrality, in both shape and yield, indicating a significant effect of the nuclear collision medium on the jet fragmentation process.

Abstract
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of eta mesons have been measured within p(T) = 2-10 GeV/c at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment in Au + Au collisions at square root S(NN) = 200 GeV. In central Au+Au the eta yields are significantly suppressed compared to peripheral Au + Au, d + Au, and p + p yields scaled by the corresponding number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. The magnitude, centrality, and p(T) dependence of the suppression is common, within errors, for eta and pi0. The ratio of eta to pi0 spectra at high p(T) amounts to 0.40 < R(eta/pi)0 < 0.48 for the three systems, in agreement with the world average measured in hadronic and nuclear reactions and, at large scaled momentum, in e+e- collisions.

Abstract
The invariant differential cross section for inclusive electron production in p+p collisions at [FORMULA: SEE TEXT] has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range 0.4<or=pT<OR=5.0 GeV/c in the central rapidity region ([FORMULA: SEE TEXT]). The contribution to the inclusive electron spectrum from semileptonic decays of hadrons carrying heavy flavor, i.e., charm quarks or, at high , bottom quarks, is determined via three independent methods. The resulting electron spectrum from heavy-flavor decays is compared to recent leading and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The total cross section of charm quark-antiquark pair production is determined to be [FORMULA: SEE TEXT].

Abstract
The azimuthal distribution of identified pi0 and inclusive photons has been measured in [FORMULA: SEE TEXT] Au+Au collisions with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). The second-harmonic parameter (nu2) was measured to describe the observed anisotropy of the azimuthal distribution. The measured inclusive photon is consistent with the value expected for the photons from hadron decay and is also consistent with the lack of direct photon signal over the measured pT range 1-6 GeV/c. An attempt is made to extract nu2 of direct photons.

Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured midrapidity ([FORMULA: SEE TEXT]) transverse momentum spectra ([FORMULA: SEE TEXT]) of electrons as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at [FORMULA: SEE TEXT]. Contributions from photon conversions and from light hadron decays, mainly Dalitz decays of pi0 and eta mesons, were removed. The resulting nonphotonic electron spectra are primarily due to the semileptonic decays of hadrons carrying heavy quarks. Nuclear modification factors were determined by comparison to nonphotonic electrons in p+p collisions. A significant suppression of electrons at high pT is observed in central Au+Au collisions, indicating substantial energy loss of heavy quarks.

Abstract
Transverse single-spin asymmetries to probe the transverse-spin structure of the proton have been measured for neutral pions and nonidentified charged hadrons from polarized proton-proton collisions at midrapidity and square root(s) = 200 GeV. The data cover a transverse momentum (pT) range 1.0-5.0 GeV/c for neutral pions and 0.5-5.0 GeV/c for charged hadrons, at a Feynman-x value of approximately zero. The asymmetries seen in this previously unexplored kinematic region are consistent with zero within errors of a few percent. In addition, the inclusive charged hadron cross section at midrapidity from 0.5 < pT < 7.0 GeV/c is presented and compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations. Successful description of the unpolarized cross section above approximately 2 GeV/c suggests that pQCD is applicable in the interpretation of the asymmetry results in the relevant kinematic range.

Abstract
New measurements are presented for charged hadron azimuthal correlations at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV. They are compared to earlier measurements obtained at (square root)s(NN) = 130 GeV and in Pb + Pb collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 17.2 GeV. Sizeable anisotropies are observed with centrality and transverse momentum (pT) dependence characteristic of elliptic flow (upsilon2). For a broad range of centralities, the observed magnitudes and trends of the differential anisotropy, upsilon2(pT), change very little over the collision energy range (square root)s(NN) = 62-200 GeV, indicating saturation of the excitation function for upsilon2 at these energies. Such a saturation may be indicative of the dominance of a very soft equation of state for (square root)s(NN) approximately 60-200 GeV.

Abstract
The first measurement of direct photons in Au + Au collisions at (square root)S(NN) = 200 GeV is presented. The direct photon signal is extracted as a function of the Au + Au collision centrality and compared to next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. The direct photon yield is shown to scale with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions for all centralities.

Abstract
The production of deuterons and antideuterons in the transverse momentum range 1.1<p(T)<4.3 GeV/c at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at square root of s(NN)=200 GeV has been studied by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. A coalescence analysis, comparing the deuteron and antideuteron spectra with that of proton and antiproton, has been performed. The coalescence probability is equal for both deuterons and antideuterons and it increases as a function of p(T), which is consistent with an expanding collision zone. Comparing (anti)proton yields, p /p=0.73+/-0.01, with (anti)deuteron yields, d /d=0.47+/-0.03, we estimate that n /n=0.64+/-0.04. The nucleon phase space density is estimated from the coalescence measurement.

Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured midrapidity transverse momentum spectra (0.4<p(T)<4.0 GeV/c) of single electrons as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. Contributions from photon conversions and Dalitz decays of light neutral mesons are measured by introducing a thin (1.7% X0) converter into the PHENIX acceptance and are statistically removed. The subtracted nonphotonic electron spectra are primarily due to the semileptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks, mainly charm at lower p(T). For all centralities, the charm production cross section is found to scale with the nuclear overlap function, T(AA). For minimum-bias collisions the charm cross section per binary collision is N(cc )/T(AA)=622+/-57(stat)+/-160(syst) microb.

Abstract
Bose-Einstein correlations of identically charged pion pairs were measured by the PHENIX experiment at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at square root s(NN)=200 GeV. The Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters were determined as a function of the transverse momentum of the pair and as a function of the centrality of the collision. Using the standard core-halo partial Coulomb fits, and a new parametrization which constrains the Coulomb fraction as determined from the unlike-sign pion correlation, the ratio R(out)/R(side) is within 0.8-1.1 for 0.25< <k(T)> <1.2 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of all radii is well described by a linear scaling in N(1/3)(part), and R(out)/R(side) for <k(T)> approximately 0.45 GeV/c is approximately constant at unity as a function of centrality.

Abstract
Event-by-event fluctuations of the average transverse momentum of produced particles near midrapidity have been measured by the PHENIX Collaboration in square root of (sNN)=200 GeV Au+Au, and p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The fluctuations are observed to be in excess of the expectation for statistically independent particle emission for all centralities. The excess fluctuations exhibit a dependence on both the centrality of the collision and on the pT range over which the average is calculated. Both the centrality and pT dependence can be well reproduced by a simulation of random particle production with the addition of contributions from hard-scattering processes.

Abstract
J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at square root of s=200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum, along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations. The total J/psi cross section is 4.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.6(syst)+/-0.4(abs) mu b. The mean transverse momentum is 1.80+/-0.23(stat)+/-0.16(syst) GeV/c.

Abstract
The invariant differential cross section for inclusive neutral-pion production in p+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV has been measured at midrapidity (|eta|<0.35) over the range 1<p(T) less, similar 14 GeV/c by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Predictions of next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations are consistent with these measurements. The precision of our result is sufficient to differentiate between prevailing gluon-to-pion fragmentation functions.

Abstract
The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV for identified and inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (|eta|<0.35) with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (|eta|=3-4 ). We observe that the v(2) of mesons falls below that of (anti)baryons for p(T)>2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.

Abstract
We report on the yield of protons and antiprotons, as a function of centrality and transverse momentum, in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In central collisions at intermediate transverse momenta (1.5<p(T)<4.5 GeV/c) a significant fraction of all produced particles are protons and antiprotons. They show a centrality-scaling behavior different from that of pions. The pmacr;/pi and p/pi ratios are enhanced compared to peripheral Au+Au, p+p, and e(+)e(-) collisions. This enhancement is limited to p(T)<5 GeV/c as deduced from the ratio of charged hadrons to pi(0) measured in the range 1.5<p(T)<9 GeV/c.

Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of neutral pions in the range 1<p(T)<10 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at BNL RHIC in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The pi(0) multiplicity in central reactions is significantly below the yields measured at the same sqrt[s(NN)] in peripheral Au+Au and p+p reactions scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. For the most central bin, the suppression factor is approximately 2.5 at p(T)=2 GeV/c and increases to approximately 4-5 at p(T) approximately 4 GeV/c. At larger p(T), the suppression remains constant within errors. The deficit is already apparent in semiperipheral reactions and increases smoothly with centrality.

Abstract
The interfering influences by which the different components of the early somatosensory evoked potentials are modified are reviewed from both neurophysiologic and clinical perspectives. Special consideration is given to the specific differences between sensory and motor interferences. In this context, the specific effect of the mental movement simulation task on the frontal N30 component is discussed in relation to the involvement of this evoked wave as a physiologic index of the dopaminergic motor pathways. Relevant interfering approaches, including concurrent events ranging from tactile stimulation to locomotion, are reviewed and discussed insofar as these data provide insights into the neurophysiologic processes of interaction between competing internal models controlling motor acts and sensory information.

They describe and review the literature about this syndrome's etiology and its association, relatively rare, with SIADH. The diagnostic reasoning and the therapeutic possibilities are described.

Abstract
It is known that somatosensory evoked potentials can be influenced by several centripetal and centrifugal factors which modify their amplitude. The present study shows for the first time that the frontal waves N30 and to a lesser extent N23 are specifically attenuated during mental movement simulation (MMS) activity. This gating phenomenon, tested on 16 normal subjects, occurred when repeated fast finger movements on the stimulated side are mentally simulated. In contrast, no significant modification appeared when the subject performed the MMS activity with the hand contralateral to that receiving electrical stimuli or when the subject performed a mental operation unrelated to the MMS. The MMS was shown by Roland et al. (1980) to increase the regional blood flow exclusively in the supplementary motor area (SMA). Our experimental data therefore indicate that the SMA could play an important role in the generation of the frontal N30.

Abstract
Three different interfering conditions were studied during the recording of pre- and postcentral somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) following median nerve stimulation at the wrist in 16 normal subjects: active finger movement (MVT), light superficial massage (LSM) and deep muscular massage (DMM) of the hand. Special attention was focused on selective effects on individual SEP components. The frontal N30 component showed the most significant amplitude reduction during the three interfering conditions (76.4% of reduction in MVT, 36.4% in DMM and 32.9% in LSM). In contrast the frontal N23 was not significantly changed and the preceding P22 component was only reduced in the MVT condition. Postcentral N20 was unchanged by the three conditions while P27 was clearly gated by movement but not significantly by LSM and DMM. The three interfering conditions enhanced the parietal N32 and had no significant effect on the parietal P45. An important point was the interindividual variability of these effects and it appeared that group average wave forms would therefore be confusing. The peak latency of some SEP components was changed during the interfering conditions. The most important effect was an increase of postcentral P45 latency which was found to be related to the amplitude enhancement of N32.

Abstract
The pattern and timing of the breakdown and loss of matrix proteins were studied in developing rat incisor enamel using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), fluorography, radioautography, and in vitro incubations of proteins isolated from freshly dissected, crushed pieces of enamel. For biochemical studies, the technique of Robinson et al. (1974, 1977, 1983) was used to transect the enamel organ and enamel into a series of strips at 1 mm intervals along the length of the tooth. The proteins in each strip were extracted and either quantified by Lowry analysis or applied to 12% slab (enamel) or 5-15% continuous gradient (enamel organ) SDS-polyacrylamide gels and separated by electrophoresis. The biochemical studies indicated that the amount of protein contained within an enamel strip increased gradually by volume across the secretory stage, reached a peak early during the maturation stage, and then declined rapidly thereafter. The distribution of enamel proteins on SDS-polyacrylamide gels changed markedly throughout this period. These changes included increases and decreases in the intensity of staining of proteins at certain molecular weights (e.g., 18 kDa) and the appearance and disappearance of some proteins not seen clearly near the start of the secretory stage of amelogenesis (e.g., 32 and 10 kDa). Labeling studies with 35S-methionine suggested that the "stacked" arrangement of proteins typical of forming enamel (secretory stage) actually represented a very dynamic association of proteins, with new ones being added at the top of the stack and then breaking down with time to become those seen at lower molecular weights. Across the secretory stage, new proteins were always added to the top of the stack, but during early maturation this activity slowed dramatically, allowing the breakdown of aging proteins to be visualized more clearly. Radioautographic studies with 3H-methionine indicated that the breakdown of newly secreted proteins also was correlated with a movement of label from the site of secretion into deeper, previously unlabeled, areas of forming enamel. In vitro studies revealed that the rate and degree of breakdown of enamel proteins varied markedly, depending on the stage of amelogenesis from which the proteins were extracted. Secretory stage enamel proteins showed slow in vitro degradation with accumulation of proteins near 18 kDa. Early maturation stage enamel proteins showed more rapid breakdown with little accumulation of proteins near 18 kDa, whereas late maturation stage enamel proteins showed complete degradation by 2 days of incubation in vitro.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
We have isolated and sequenced a baboon apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) clone from a liver cDNA library using a human cDNA hybridization probe. This baboon cDNA contains the entire ApoA-I coding region (801 bp, 267 aa), a 3' untranslated region, and a poly(A)tail. Among comparisons with apoAI sequences from other species, the baboon cDNA is most similar to that of the cynomolgus macaque (99.2% homologous) and least similar to the rat sequence (72.6% homologous). A high frequency of nonsynonymous substitutions are observed by alignment of baboon and human apoAI cDNAs, but comparisons of hydrophilicity profiles show that protein structure is conserved by substitutions of aa with similar properties. A polymorphic PstI cleavage site was identified by Southern blot analysis and subsequently mapped to the 5' end of the baboon apoAI gene. To identify effects of apoAI allelic variation on cholesterol metabolism, we used immunoblotting to compare the distributions of ApoA-I among lipoprotein size classes in baboons from each genotype under basal and atherogenic diets. We observed an increase of ApoA-I in high density lipoprotein (size class 1) particles after atherogenic diets in homozygotes for one allele, as compared to slight decreases in the other genotypes.

Abstract
To develop the baboon model for molecular genetic studies of atherosclerosis, we have cloned and sequenced the baboon apolipoprotein E (apo E) gene. The baboon apo E gene encodes the E4 isoform with respect to specific amino acid positions, suggesting that the common epsilon 3 allele is not the primal human allele. Rather than accumulating predominantly synonymous nucleotide changes, 50% of substitutions in human and baboon apo E gene coding regions cause amino acid substitutions. However, comparisons of these apo E proteins show conservation of amphipathic helices required for apo E--lipid interactions. The human and baboon apo E genes have diverged less extensively than those from rat and mouse, providing further evidence for a slowing of molecular evolution in primate species. The baboon and rhesus monkey apo E genes (intron 2) contain two Alu repeats that are absent in the human gene, indicating insertion after the divergence of human and cercopithecine lineages, but before the baboon/rhesus divergence. S1 nuclease studies show that transcription of the baboon apo E gene starts at two different positions, one of which corresponds to the human gene start site. To examine linkage of apolipoprotein genes in the baboon genome, we have used a human cDNA probe to detect apo C-I gene sequences approximately 4 kb from the 3' end of the baboon apo E gene.

Abstract
In 27 normal adult subjects, pre- and postimperative phases of the CNV had an homogeneous pattern. The return to the baseline was of short duration (320 +/- 170 msec) whatever the amplitude and surface. This is in favor of an active mechanism terminating the CNV. In 27 schizophrenic and 13 schizoaffective patients, pre- and postimperative phases of the CNV were heterogeneous in character suggesting the possibility of multiple disturbances. When present, the preimperative negativity was of lower amplitude and had a delayed return to the baseline with a wider dispersion. In the patients with preimperative negativity followed by a PINV (postimperative negative variation), a linear relationship has been found between the amplitudes of the two waves.

Abstract
We tested the hypothesis that the somatosensory central conduction time (CCT) can reveal central nervous system involvement in vitamin B12-deficient patients when this cannot be established on clinical grounds alone. Three patients with pernicious anemia and without clinical signs of upper motor neuron lesion had a striking increase of CCT. This increase was shown to be reversible in 1 patient who improved over 3 years of treatment. Detailed analysis of the CCT showed that the decrease of conduction velocity occurred in the posterior columns, whereas the conduction was normal at the thalamo-cortical level. We conclude that CCT is a useful parameter to localize and quantify central nervous system disease in vitamin B12 deficiency.

Abstract
The gating effect of self-paced rapid flexion movements of the fingers on the early somatosensory evoked potentials following electrical stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist was studied in normal volunteers. Triggering of the median nerve stimulation by the EMG signals with a delay of 100 msec showed that the slow positive wave of the movement-associated potential was not directly responsible for the SEP amplitude variations observed. The nerve action potential at Erb's point as well as far-field components P9 and P11 were unchanged by the active movements. Far-field components P13-P14, which are presumably generated in the medial lemniscus, were not significantly modified. An enhancing effect on the widespread N18 component was found, which is in favour of a subcortical gating process. The parietal component N20 was unchanged by active movement interference whereas the frontal P22 component showed a marked suppression. A fronto-parietal dissociation was thus disclosed which could be in favour of separate cortical generators in the debate on the origin of SEP components. An important gating effect was observed on parietal P27 and frontal N30 components, the latter being considerably reduced in amplitude. The parietal P45 component showed no significant alteration. Each component of the early SEPs was thus distinctly influenced by the gating process during active movement interference.

Abstract
An 18-year-old girl developed a reversible locked-in state with bilateral ptosis and almost complete ophthalmoplegia. She later presented with a relapsing and remitting course suggestive of multiple sclerosis. Autopsy findings demonstrated bilateral capsular and tegmental demyelinating lesions. In addition to this unusual aetiology, this is the first report with pathological evidence of a locked-in syndrome due to lesions outside the ventral brainstem.

Abstract
A patient with myotonia congenita (Thomsen's disease) presented with unpleasant sensations of tightness in the chest and dyspnea, which were maximal at the beginning of exercise and gradually improved as exercise progressed. Lung function tests and maximal static respiratory pressures were within normal limits. Precise electromyographic (EMG) and mechanical studies, however, demonstrated the increased excitability, impaired relaxation, and transient weakness of the respiratory muscles. These studies thus indicate that myotonia congenita may involve the respiratory muscles to the same extent as any other skeletal muscle, and that precise EMG studies are occasionally useful in determining the organic basis of respiratory symptoms.

Abstract
Because of the nature and location of the lesion in central pontine myelinolysis, considerable difficulties in diagnosis may arise. Computed tomography (CT) and brainstem auditory-evoked potentials are useful in following the spread and regression of the pontine lesion. The correlation between clinical evolution, serial CT scans, and brainstem auditory-evoked potentials is considered in a patient with central pontine myelinolysis and subsequent complete recovery with special emphasis on the evolution of the CT scan after recovery.

Abstract
Successive stages in the reinnervation of denervated muscle fibers following a complete or partial motor nerve lesion in humans were analyzed with the concentric needle electrode during voluntary contraction. Motor unit potential (MUP) patterns were displayed by coherent EMG, in which the potential triggers an oscilloscope sweep and a digital delay line enables the early part of the MUP to be displayed. After a complete nerve lesion, MUPs showing the response of as few as one to three muscle fibers can be observed. MUPs become highly polyphasic as more muscle fibers are incorporated. Marked latency jitter and intermittent blocking of components as well as the occurrence of linked potentials result in complex patterns that may be confused with a "myopathic" pattern of brief small spikes if conventional observation of free-running sweeps is used alone. After a partial nerve lesion, the healthy motor axons achieve extensive collateral reinnervation of the denervated muscle fibers whereby linked potentials of various latencies are added after the original MUP. Adequate understanding of these characteristic features can help clarify some current issues in electromyography. The mechanisms by which long-latency linked potentials and desynchronized components are produced during remodeling of motor units in the course of regeneration involve a number of factors such as slow conduction along regenerated axon branches, ectopic motor end-plates, insecure neuromuscular transmission, and muscle fiber atrophy.

Abstract
We investigated pulmonary mechanics in 25 patients, 9 to 55 years of age, with a variety of generalised neuromuscular diseases and variable degrees of respiratory muscle weakness. The average degree of inspiratory muscle force was 39.2% (range 8-83%) of predicted. The lung volume restriction far exceeded that expected for the degree of muscle weakness: the observed decrement in respiratory muscle force should, theoretically, decrease vital capacity to 78% of its control value, while the mean VC in our patients was only 50% of predicted. Analysis of lung pressure-volume curves indicated that the two principal causes of the disproportionate loss of lung volume were a reduction in lung distensibility probably caused by widespread microatelectasis, and a decrease in the outward pull of the chest wall. Because it reflects both direct (loss of distending pressure) and secondary (alterations in the elastic properties of the lungs and chest wall) effects of respiratory muscle weakness on lung function, we conclude that, in these patients, the vital capacity remains the most useful measurement to follow evolution of the disease process or response to treatment.

Abstract
A striking enlargement of peripheral nerves was observed in a patient with myotonic dystrophy (Steinert's disease). Clinical findings disclosed a polyneuropathy which was confirmed by electrophysiological and morphological investigations. Myopathic as well as neurogenic alterations were found on electromyography in wasted hand muscles. The prominent finding on ultrastructural study of sural nerve biopsy was an important collagen infiltration with rather few "onior bulb" formations. This extensive endoneural collagen formation appeared to be responsible for the nerve hypertrophy. Evidence of segmental demyelination and remyelination was also found. Glycogen deposits were present in some myelinated axons and is some Schwann cells. Peculiar crystalline inclusions were observed in fibroblasts processes. The relation between myotonic dystrophy and polyneuropathy remains a matter of discussion.
