Abstract
Abnormal DNA methylation is involved in the initiation and progression of lymphoid tumors. Hence, DNA demethylating agents are promising candidate drugs for chemotherapy against these tumors. The salicylic acid derived anti-inflammatory agent, olsalazine, reportedly suppresses DNA methyltransferase in human cells and has the potential to be clinically applied as a DNA demethylating agent. In this study, we investigated the effects of olsalazine on cell proliferation and DNA methylation using canine lymphoid tumor cell lines (CLBL-1, GL-1, and UL-1). Treatment with olsalazine led to significant cell growth inhibition and increased the apoptotic rate in all three cell lines. Treatment with olsalazine reduced the total amount of 5-methylcytosine in genomic DNA, as assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation revealed that 1,801 to 5,626 CpG sites showed decreased DNA methylation levels in three cell lines, including the promoter regions of ADAM23, FES, and CREB3L1 genes. The outcomes of the present study demonstrate that a DNA demethylating agent olsalazine, inhibits cell proliferation and DNA methylation in canine lymphoid tumor cells, suggesting that it can be a candidate drug for the treatment of lymphoid tumors in dogs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The C-reactive protein : albumin ratio (CAR) has been reported as a novel prognostic marker in several cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of CAR in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). METHODS This was a single-centre retrospective study of patients who underwent surgery for ICC in a university hospital in Japan between 1998 and 2018. CAR, Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) and modified GPS (mGPS) were calculated. Their correlation with recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) was analysed with Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS Seventy-two patients were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the optimal CAR cut-off value of 0·02. CAR above 0·02 was associated with higher carbohydrate antigen 19-9 levels (20·5 versus 66·1 units/ml for CAR of 0·02 or less; P = 0·002), larger tumour size (3·2 versus 4·4 cm respectively; P = 0·031) and a higher rate of microvascular invasion (9 of 28 versus 25 of 44; P = 0·041). RFS and OS were shorter in patients with CAR above 0·02: hazard ratio (HR) 4·31 (95 per cent c.i. 2·02 to 10·63) and HR 4·80 (1·85 to 16·40) respectively. In multivariable analysis CAR above 0·02 was an independent prognostic factor of RFS (HR 3·29 (1·33 to 8·12); P < 0·001), but not OS. CONCLUSIONS CAR was associated with prognosis in patients who had hepatic resection for ICC.

Abstract
Corrosion-control coatings which can enhance bone formation and be completely replaced by bone are attractive for biodegradable Mg alloys. Carbonate apatite (CAp) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings were formed on Mg-4 wt% Y-3 wt% rare earth (WE43) alloy as a corrosion-control and bioabsorbable coating in the coating solution with various concentrations of NaHCO3. The incorporation of carbonate group in apatite structure was examined using X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Rat osteoclast precursor and MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cells were cultured on the CAp- and HAp-coated WE43 to examine the osteoclastic resorption and the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, respectively. Mg ions in the used medium were quantified to examine the corrosion-control ability. The NaHCO3 addition in the solution resulted in the formation of B-type CAp in which the phosphate group of apatite structure was substituted with the carbonate group. The osteoclastic resorption was observed only for the CAp coatings as the cracking of the coatings and the corrosion of substrate WE43 strongly localized under osteoclast cell bodies. The CAp and HAp coatings significantly enhanced the ALP activity of osteoblasts. The CAp-coated WE43 specimens showed 1/5 smaller amount of Mg ion release than the uncoated WE43 on the first day of culturing osteoblasts. For the subsequent 22 days, the Mg ion release was reduced to 1/2 by the CAp coatings. In the presence of osteoclasts, the CAp coatings showed slightly lower corrosion protectiveness than the HAp coating. It was demonstrated that the CAp coatings can be a bioabsorbable and corrosion-control coating for biodegradable Mg alloys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The right hepatic venous system consists of the right hepatic vein (RHV) and inferior RHVs (IRHVs). When the right posterior section is used as a graft for liver transplantation, understanding variations and relationships between the RHV and IRHVs is critical for graft venous return and hepatic vein reconstruction. This study aimed to evaluate variations in the hepatic veins and the relationships between them. METHODS The medical records and CT images of patients who underwent hepatectomy as liver donors were assessed retrospectively. The relationship between the veins was evaluated by three-dimensional CT. RESULTS The configuration of the posterior section was classified into one of eight types based on the RHV and IRHVs in 307 patients. Type 1a (103 of 307), type 1b (139 of 307) and type 2a (40 of 307) accounted for 91·9 per cent of the total. The diameter of the RHV extending towards the inferior vena cava had a significant inverse correlation with that of the IRHV (r2 = -0·615, P < 0·001). Type 1a, which had no IRHVs, had the RHV with the largest diameter; conversely, type 2a, which had a large IRHV, had the RHV with the smallest diameter. CONCLUSION The hepatic venous system of the right posterior section was classified into eight types, with an inverse relationship between RHV and IRHV sizes. This information is useful for segment VII resection or when the right liver is used as a transplant graft.

Abstract
The performance indicator called limit of detection for microarray platform (LODP) was defined in ISO 16578:2013. The methods to determine practical LODP were explored. In general, + 3 SD of the background is used as the signal strength of limit of detection and criteria for dividing positive and negative results. Since the negative signal had been defined differently for each microarray platform, signals obtained from Non-Probe Spots (NPS) installed on the microarrays were defined as the "background" of microarrays. LODP was determined as the lowest concentration of which the average signal exceeded Avg. + 3 SD of the background (NPS) and the signal was significantly different from those of the lower and higher adjacent concentration points measured with a diluted series of reference materials. For reliable qualitative analysis, the positive results can be defined as signals higher than those corresponding to LODP and negative results as lower signals, without determining limit of detection for all target probes. The use of LODP also enables comparisons of platform performances without checking sequence dependencies, and assists to select reliable and fitting platforms for experimental purposes.

Abstract
Background Cancer‐related inflammation has been correlated with cancer prognosis. This study evaluated inflammatory biomarkers, including neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte‐to‐monocyte ratio (LMR), programmed death ligand (PD‐L) 1 expression, and tumour microenvironment in relation to prognosis and clinicopathological features of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing curative hepatic resection. Methods Patients who had liver resection for HCC in 2000–2011 were analysed. Univariable and multivariable analyses were conducted for overall (OS) and recurrence‐free (RFS) survival. Immunohistochemical analyses of PD‐L1, CD8 and CD68 expression were performed. HCC cell lines were evaluated for PD‐L1 expression. A subgroup analysis was conducted to determine patient features, survival and the tumour microenvironment. Results were validated in a cohort of patients with HCC treated surgically in 2012–2016. Results Some 281 patients who underwent hepatic resection for HCC were included. Multivariable analysis showed that low LMR was an independent prognostic factor of OS (hazard ratio (HR) 1·59, 95 per cent c.i. 1·00 to 2·41; P = 0·045) and RFS (HR 1·47, 1·05 to 2·04; P = 0·022) after resection. Low preoperative LMR values were correlated with higher α‐fetoprotein values (P < 0·001), larger tumour size (P < 0·001), and high rates of poor differentiation (P = 0·035) and liver cirrhosis (P = 0·008). LMR was significantly lower in PD‐L1‐positive patients than in those with PD‐L1 negativity (P < 0·001). Results were confirmed in the validation cohort. PD‐L1 expression was upregulated in HCC cell lines treated with interferon‐γ and co‐cultured with THP‐1 monocyte cells. Conclusion LMR is an independent predictor of survival after hepatic resection in patients with HCC. Modulation of the immune checkpoint pathway in the tumour microenvironment is associated with a low LMR.

Abstract
Cholangitis is a major complication following transplantation. We report a living donor liver transplant (LDLT) patient with cholangitis due to multiple stones in the intrahepatic bile duct during hepaticojejunostomy anastomosis, who was successfully treated with the rendezvous technique using double balloon endoscope. A 64-year-old woman underwent LDLT with right lobe graft and hepaticojejunostomy for Wilson disease. There was bile leakage with biliary peritonitis, which was treated conservatively after transplant. Two years after surgery, she developed reiterated cholangitis due to stenosis of hepaticojejunostomy anastomosis and multiple stones in the intrahepatic bile ducts. Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage was performed. The size of the drainage tube was increased, and the anastomotic area was dilated in a stepwise manner using a balloon catheter. The stones were crushed and lithotomy was performed using electronic hydraulic lithotripsy through cholangioscopy. Finally, lithotomy was performed for the remaining stones through endoscopic retrograde cholangiography with the rendezvous technique using the double balloon endoscope. Rendezvous approach with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage and double balloon endoscopic retrograde cholangiography was an effective treatment for the multiple intrahepatic stones in hepaticojejunostomy following LDLT with right lobe graft.

Abstract
In the advanced medical field, there is a constant need for efficient guidance formulation by regulators. Technology forecasting as a surveillance for regulation needs may be an effective solution by notifying regulatory authorities of the possible future changes in regulations. However, the lack of tangible frameworks has made the relationship between technology forecasting and regulation difficult to comprehend, and has led to an under-analyzed state of how technology forecasts are implemented into the guidance formulation process. In this study, we introduce a framework built specifically for facilitating the comprehension of the relationship between technologies enlisted in technology forecasting and guidances formulated after the forecasting, and applied the framework to a case of technology forecasting conducted by regulatory authorities in Japan. Four patterns of the relationships between a technology forecasting conducted by regulators and the guidances developed after the forecast are identified. The results and discussions provide suggestions of technology forecast design and application in the guidance formulation process by regulators in the field of medical devices.

Abstract
Transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) is a rare but severe complication after liver transplantation. In contrast to other thrombotic microangiopathies, treatment for TA-TMA has yet to be clarified. A 52-year-old male patient with liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis C underwent split liver transplantation from a deceased donor. His clinical course was without complication until 4 days after transplantation, when he experienced impaired consciousness, hemolytic anemia with fragmented erythrocytes, and marked thrombocytopenia. TA-TMA was diagnosed, and recombinant thrombomodulin was administered for 4 days. The patient's clinical symptoms and laboratory data rapidly improved. He has been followed up for 6 months and has not shown any complications. The pathogenesis of TA-TMA is endothelial damage in the vasculature. Recombinant thrombomodulin, an endothelial cell-protecting agent, is a promising new therapeutic choice for TA-TMA after liver transplantation.

Abstract
We observed the atomic 1s and 2p states of π^{-} bound to ^{121}Sn nuclei as distinct peak structures in the missing mass spectra of the ^{122}Sn(d,^{3}He) nuclear reaction. A very intense deuteron beam and a spectrometer with a large angular acceptance let us achieve a potential of discovery, which includes the capability of determining the angle-dependent cross sections with high statistics. The 2p state in a Sn nucleus was observed for the first time. The binding energies and widths of the pionic states are determined and found to be consistent with previous experimental results of other Sn isotopes. The spectrum is measured at finite reaction angles for the first time. The formation cross sections at the reaction angles between 0° and 2° are determined. The observed reaction-angle dependence of each state is reproduced by theoretical calculations. However, the quantitative comparison with our high-precision data reveals a significant discrepancy between the measured and calculated formation cross sections of the pionic 1s state.

Abstract
Abstract:We investigated the application of resampling techniques to the statistical analysis of the Brier score (B), and extended them to the statistical comparison of two Bs derived from the same set of patients. The re-sampling techniques are helpful in the statistical analysis of B, and there are almost no differences between the jackknife method and the bootstrap method in this analysis. Thus, we believe that B should be used more often as an index to evaluate probabilistic judgments in the case in which the data sets for the assessment are “degenerate” as the “receiver operating characteristic data sets.”

Abstract
Although Roux-en Y hepaticojejunostomy was previously recommended for the biliary reconstruction in liver transplantation for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), some recent reports showed no difference in the graft survival between Roux-en Y and duct-to-duct anastomosis in deceased-donor liver transplantation. On the other hand, considering the risk of recurrence and the short length of the bile duct of the graft, duct-to-duct biliary anastomosis has never been reported in a patient undergoing living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for PSC. A 45 year-old male underwent LDLT using a left-lobe graft donated from his brother. Cholangiography showed no lesion in his common bile duct and duct-to-duct anastomosis was chosen for him. Fifteen months later, he suffered cholangitis due to PSC recurrence and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography was performed. The stents were inserted into his B2 and B3, and he remains well. Because of the ability to easily manage biliary complication, duct-to-duct biliary reconstruction may become the first choice in LDLT for PSC without common bile duct lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Finding associated factors with childhood behavioural problems as early as preschool age is important. Studies have revealed several factors including socioeconomic factors, which may vary among different cultural background and population. However, investigation in general Japanese population of preschool age has not been well demonstrated. Thus, the objective of this study was to examine associated factors of childhood behavioural problems using Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) in a prospective birth cohort study. METHODS Total 3813 SDQ were distributed between October 2014 and December 2015 to the subpopulation of prospective birth cohort study, the Hokkaido Study on Environment and Children's Health. The subpopulation consisted of participants who had reached age 5 and were born between April 2008 and December 2010. Baseline questionnaire filled at recruitment and birth record were used to obtain participant information. Children with total difficulties score ≧ 13 were defined as likelihood of behavioural problems. A total of 2553 children with valid answers were included into the analysis. The response rate was 67.1%. RESULTS Number of children with likelihood of behavioural problems was 521 (20.4%). Boys showed more problematic scores than girls. Multivariate analysis found that maternal pre-pregnancy BMI ≧ 30 kg/m2 , primipara, maternal education lower than high school, family income during pregnancy < 3 million yen/year and boy gender were the factors associated with increased odds ratio of likelihood of child behavioural problems. CONCLUSIONS This study found that prenatal socioeconomic factors were associated with likelihood of child behavioural problems at preschool age in Japan.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Immune-mediated graft dysfunction (IGD), a recently established disease entity with unfavourable outcome, is an antigraft immune reaction during interferon-based antiviral treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection after liver transplantation (LT). We report a case having steroid-resistant acute cellular rejection (ACR) type IGD, which was successfully treated using thymoglobulin. CASE REPORT A 56-year-old woman with recurrent HCV after LT was commenced on antiviral treatment including simeprevir, pegylated-interferon (IFN) 2a, and ribavirin. A negative serum HCV-RNA was confirmed after 4 weeks. After 12 weeks of therapy, severe liver dysfunction developed, despite a constantly negative HCV-RNA. Liver biopsy revealed portal and periportal inflammatory infiltrates including numerous eosinophils, lymphocytes, and bile duct damages, indicating ACR. IFN therapy was ceased, and she was treated with steroid pulse treatment, followed by high-level immunosuppression maintenance. However, ACR was irremediable. Thereafter she was treated with thymoglobulin (75 mg/d for 5 days). Her serum alanine aminotransaminase and total bilirubin levels decreased immediately, and her liver biopsy specimen showed no activity. During these periods of the treatment, the HCV-RNA became positive and the liver enzyme elevated, but other liver function tests still remained within normal range. CONCLUSION Thymoglobulin could be the best choice in steroid-resistant IGD during antiviral treatment for post-transplantation recurrent hepatitis C.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis C viral graft reinfection is almost a universal event after liver transplantation with consequent disease progression. METHODS We applied triple therapy (n = 21) with the use of telaprevir (TVR; n = 12) or simeprevir (SVR; n = 9). RESULTS TVR was given at the dose 1,500 mg daily (n = 11) with reduced dose of cyclosporine at 25% to 50%, and SVR was given at the dose 100 mg daily with unadjusted cyclosporine, followed by 12 weeks of dual therapy. The early viral response was achieved in 91.7% (n = 11), end of treatment response rate was 91.7% (n = 11), and sustained viral response rate was 83.3% (n = 10) in the TVR group, and respective rates were 88.9% (n = 8), 77.8% (n = 7), and 77.8% (n = 7) in the SVR group. Although granulocyte colony-stimulating factor was not given in the patients with triple therapy, blood transfusion was performed in 7 cases (58.3%) in the TVR group and 1 case (11.1%) in the SVR group. Interferon-mediated graft dysfunction was observed in 4 cases (33.3%) in the TVR group and 3 cases (33.3%) in the SVR group, respectively. The cumulative viral clearance rates in triple (n = 21) and dual (n = 105) therapy were 95.0% and 18.1% at 12 weeks, and 95.0% and 40.0%, respectively, at 24 weeks (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS Although careful monitoring for possible adverse events is required during treatment, triple therapy with the use of direct-acting agents are very effective in treating hepatitis C after liver transplantation.

Abstract
Our aim was to determine whether variant bile duct (BD) anatomy is associated with portal vein (PV) and/or hepatic artery (HA) anatomy. We examined the associations between BD anatomy and PV and/or HA anatomy in 407 living donor transplantation donors. We also examined whether the right posterior BD (RPBD) course was associated with the PV and/or HA anatomy. Variant PV, HA and BD anatomies were found in 11%, 25% and 25%, respectively, of 407 donors enrolled in this study. The presence of a variant BD was more frequently associated with a variant PV than with a normal PV (61% vs. 20%, p < 0.0001). By contrast, the presence of a variant HA was not associated with a variant BD. A supraportal RPBD was found in 357 donors (88%) and an infraportal RPBD was found in 50 donors (12%). An infraportal RPBD was significantly more common in donors with a variant PV than in donors with a normal PV (30% vs. 10%, p = 0.0004). Variant PV, but not variant HA, anatomies were frequently associated with variant BD anatomy. Additionally, an infraportal RPBD was more common in donors with a variant PV than in donors with a normal PV.

Abstract
The diagnosis and clinical management of cystic echinococcosis (CE) rely on imaging and serology, the latter still having a complementary role as its accuracy in assessing cyst viability is unsatisfactory. We used an experimental IgG ELISA test based on the recombinant antigen rEgAgB8/1 cloned from Echinococcus granulosus to differentiate active from inactive/cured CE infection, comparing its performance to that of a commercially available ELISA test used routinely in our hospital laboratory. Both tests were performed on sera from 88 patients with hepatic echinococcal cysts, grouped according to cyst stage based on ultrasonographical morphology, and on 17 patients surgically treated for echinococcosis and 18 patients with nonparasitic hepatic cysts included as controls. Tests' performances did not differ significantly, but the overall concordance between tests drastically dropped when groups were analysed separately. Further longitudinal studies should evaluate whether these discrepancies reflect the different ability of either test to predict the evolution of cysts over time. Although the recombinant-AgB8/1-based ELISA test seems to have no clinical advantage over the commercially available ELISA test in the assessment of hepatic CE cyst viability, the easiness of production and reproducibility of high-quality recombinant antigens makes rEgAgB8/1 a valid candidate for use in CE ELISA diagnostic tests.

Abstract
A two-stage-imaging ellipsometric-contrast microscope (TIEM) has been developed to measure the distribution of film thickness over a wide area of molecularly thin liquid films with a high lateral resolution, wide field of view, high thickness resolution, and high-speed. Moreover, this ellipsometric microscope enables us to achieve simultaneous measurements with other measurement apparatuses. We present the principle used to parallelize an object image to an imaging sensor and to reduce the incident angle entering the imaging sensor. In addition, we discuss the characteristic shape deformation of the object image due to oblique observation. The performance of the actual setup for TIEM was experimentally studied. A lateral resolution of about 1 μm was obtained by measuring the modulation transfer function of the TIEM. We also found that the shape deformation approximately agreed with that from theory. Furthermore, for molecularly thin films, we confirmed linearity between the film thickness and the light intensity measured with TIEM, which enables us to quantify the thickness of the films. TIEM can open up a new field of real-time imaging of thin films such as visualization of a liquid lubricant film under shear.

Abstract
The changes in the levels of carbonic anhydrase isozyme III (CA-III) in swine plasma and urine have not been previously determined or reported. CA-III is relatively specific to skeletal muscles, and should therefore be a useful diagnostic marker for muscle diseases. We isolated CA-III from swine muscle tissues and determined CA-III levels in the plasma and urine from both healthy and diseased pigs. The levels of CA-III in the tissues of female swine (age, 3 months) and plasma of young swine (age, 1-5 months) and adult female pigs (age, 2-3 years) were determined using the ELISA system for swine CA-III. The mean (± SD) levels of CA-III in the skeletal muscles were 3.8 ± 3.2 mg/g (wet tissue), and in the plasma, 230 ± 193 ng/ml at 1 month, 189 ± 208 ng/ml at 2 months, 141 ± 148 ng/ml at 3 months, 78 ± 142 ng/ml at 4 months and 53 ± 99 ng/ml at 5 months. The mean level of CA-III in the plasma samples from 2- to 3-year-old pigs was 18 ± 60 ng/ml. CA-III in the plasma samples was found to decrease from 1 month until 3 years of age (p < 0.01). We performed far-western blotting to clarify the cause of the observed decrease in CA-III in plasma. Our results demonstrated that CA-III is bound to the transferrin and albumin. In addition, we determined that the levels of CA-III in plasma and urine samples were higher in diseased swine compared with the healthy pigs.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine a planning target volume (PTV) margin for lung cancer patients using a four-dimensional cone-beam CT (4D CBCT) acquired during volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) treatment. METHODS A VMAT plan for lung cancer patients was created by Pinnacle v9.0 (Philips) treatment planning system (TPS), where the gross target volume (GTVs) in each breathing phase was delineated by using 4D-planning CT scan (TOSHIBA and ANZAI). The VMAT treatment was performed with a stereotactic body frame after the registration using Elekta X-ray volume imaging (XVI) unit. Simultaneous cone-beam projection images were acquired for 3 or 4 fractions of 10 patients. The in-treatment 4D CBCT was reconstructed by dividing into four breathing phase bins. A total of 38 in-treatment 4D-CBCT sets were exported to Pinnacle TPS. The isocenter of in-treatment 4D CBCT was matched with that of 4D-planning CT. The tumor motion during treatment was manually tracked on in-treatment 4D CBCT, and the center-of-mass (COM) location of the tumor was estimated. Analyzing the tumor regions observed by in-treatment 4D CBCT, a PTV margin in our system was derived. RESULTS The average difference in COM location of the tumor was less than 1mm for all directions, while the standard deviations (SD's) were about 1.3mm, 1.6mm, and 2.1mm for the lateral, the vertical, and the longitudinal directions, respectively. The large discrepancy more than 3mm was observed for one patient. The required PTV margin was about 3-4mm for the lateral and the vertical directions, whereas it was about 5mm for the longitudinal direction. CONCLUSIONS The uncertainties of the tumor motion caused by respiration were observed by in-treatment 4D CBCT images. It was feasible to determine the PTV margin from 4D volume images. K. Abstract
In the previous studies, we reported that carnosic acid (CA) protects cortical neurons by activating the Keap1/Nrf2 pathway, which activation is initiated by S-alkylation of the critical cysteine thiol of the Keap1 protein by the "electrophilic"quinone-type CA. Here, we found that the pro-electrophilic CA inhibited the in vitro lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced activation of cells of the mouse microglial cell line MG6. LPS induced the expression of IL-1β and IL-6, typical inflammatory cytokines released from microglial cells. CA inhibited the NO production associated with a decrease in the level of inducible NO synthase. Neither CA nor LPS affected cell survival at the concentrations used here. These actions of CA seemed to be mediated by induction of phase 2 genes (gclc, gclm, nqo1 and xct). We propose that an inducer of phase 2 genes may be a critical regulator of microglial activation. Thus, CA is a unique pro-electrophilic compound that provides both a protective effect on neurons and an anti-inflammatory one on microglia through induction of phase 2 genes.

Abstract
Gas desorption rates for several types of B(4)C resins were investigated using a throughput method. The investigation was particularly focused on determining the out gas composition, effects of dry air, grain size (density) effects on the gas desorption rates. It is found that water is the main component of out gas and that dry air can effectively reduce gas desorption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Quantitative analysis of the activities of all masticatory muscles is required to elucidate the mechanism of stomatognathic dysfunction. Electromyography can be used to record the activity of masticatory muscles, but quantification of the overall activity of every masticatory muscle has not been accomplished because of methodological limitations. In this study, we used muscle functional magnetic resonance imaging for simultaneous quantification of the overall activities of the masseter, medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid muscles during unilateral gum chewing. METHODS Seven healthy male volunteers participated in the study. We evaluated changes in the mean proton transverse relaxation time in the bilateral masseter, medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid muscles before and after unilateral gum chewing, and to quantify the overall activity of these muscles simultaneously during unilateral gum chewing. RESULTS After 5 min of chewing, the activity of the ipsilateral masseter was highest among the six muscles, followed by the ipsilateral medial pterygoid, contralateral lateral pterygoid and contralateral masseter muscles. CONCLUSION These results affirm the importance of the ipsilateral masseter muscle and quantitatively demonstrate the important contribution of the ipsilateral medial pterygoid and contralateral lateral pterygoid muscles during unilateral mastication.
