Abstract
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate whether stress and anxiety about viral epidemics have effects as parameters in the relationship among COVID-19 risk perception, COVID-19 self-care, and occupational burnout for Korean correctional nurses. The subjects of this study were 107 correctional nurses working at 52 correctional facilities in Korea that are conducting COVID-19 management and prevention activities. Data were collected from March 12 to 30, 2022. Results suggest that correctional nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic may experience occupational burnout because of increased stress and anxiety about viral epidemics as their COVID-19 risk perception increased. In addition, stress and anxiety about being infected with the COVID-19 virus itself will cause burnout. This study contributes to promotion of the mental health of Korean correctional nurses and provides basic data for developing an intervention program to prevent occupational burnout.

Abstract
Many types of plastic products, including polystyrene, have long been used in commercial and industrial applications. Microplastics and nanoplastics, plastic particles derived from these plastic products, are emerging as environmental pollutants that can pose health risks to a wide variety of living organisms, including humans. However, it is not well understood how microplastics and nanoplastics affect cellular functions and induce stress responses. Humans can be exposed to polystyrene-microplastics and polystyrene-nanoplastics through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. Most ingested plastics are excreted from the body, but inhaled plastics may accumulate in the lungs and can even reach the brain via the nose-to-brain route. Small-sized polystyrene-nanoplastics can enter cells by endocytosis, accumulate in the cytoplasm, and cause various cellular stresses, such as inflammation with increased pro-inflammatory cytokine production, oxidative stress with generation of reactive oxygen species, and mitochondrial dysfunction. They induce autophagy activation and autophagosome formation, but autophagic flux may be impaired due to lysosomal dysfunction. Unless permanently exposed to polystyrene-nanoplastics, they can be removed from cells by exocytosis and subsequently restore cellular function. However, neurons are very susceptible to this type of stress, thus even acute exposure can lead to neurodegeneration without recovery. This review focuses specifically on recent advances in research on polystyrene-nanoplastic-induced cytotoxicity and neurotoxicity. Furthermore, in this review, based on mechanistic studies of polystyrene-nanoplastics at the cellular level other than neurons, future directions for overcoming the negative effects of polystyrene-nanoplastics on neurons were suggested.

Abstract
Nanoplastics (NPs) are potentially toxic and pose a health risk as they can induce an inflammatory response and oxidative stress at cellular and organismal levels. Humans can be exposed to NPs through various routes, including ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. Notably, uptake into the body via inhalation could result in brain accumulation, which may occur directly across the blood-brain barrier or via other routes. NPs that accumulate in the brain may be endocytosed into neurons, inducing neurotoxicity. Recently, we demonstrated that exposure to polystyrene (PS)-NPs reduces the viability of neurons. We have also reported that inhibiting the retrograde transport of PS-NPs by histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) prevents their intracellular accumulation and promotes their export in mouse embryonic fibroblasts. However, whether HDAC6 inhibition can improve neuronal viability by increasing exocytosis of PS-NPs from neurons remains unknown. In this study, mice were intranasally administered fluorescent PS-NPs (PS-YG), which accumulated in the brain and showed potential neurotoxic effects. In cultured neurons, the HDAC6 inhibitor ACY-1215 reduced the fluorescence signal detected from PS-YG, suggesting that the removal of PS-YG from neurons was promoted. Therefore, these results suggest that blocking the retrograde transport of PS-NPs using an HDAC6 inhibitor can alleviate the neurotoxic effects of PS-NPs that enter the brain.

Abstract
LCN2/neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin/24p3 (lipocalin 2) is a secretory protein that acts as a mammalian bacteriostatic molecule. Under neuroinflammatory stress conditions, LCN2 is produced and secreted by activated microglia and reactive astrocytes, resulting in neuronal apoptosis. However, it remains largely unknown whether inflammatory stress and neuronal loss can be minimized by modulating LCN2 production and secretion. Here, we first demonstrated that LCN2 was secreted from reactive astrocytes, which were stimulated by treatment with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an inflammatory stressor. Notably, we found two effective conditions that led to the reduction of induced LCN2 levels in reactive astrocytes: proteasome inhibition and macroautophagic/autophagic flux activation. Mechanistically, proteasome inhibition suppresses NFKB/NF-κB activation through NFKBIA/IκBα stabilization in primary astrocytes, even under inflammatory stress conditions, resulting in the downregulation of Lcn2 expression. In contrast, autophagic flux activation via MTOR inhibition reduced the intracellular levels of LCN2 through its pre-secretory degradation. In addition, we demonstrated that the N-terminal signal peptide of LCN2 is critical for its secretion and degradation, suggesting that these two pathways may be mechanistically coupled. Abstract
Tomatoes include high levels of lycopene, which is a potent antioxidative, hypolipidemic, and antidiabetic phytochemical. The intake of lycopene is associated with a reduced risk of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate whether tomato ketchup and tomato paste, major dietary sources for tomato and lycopene, could regulate hepatic lipid metabolism and adipogenesis. To investigate the regulatory effects of tomato ketchup and tomato paste, we prepared a tomato ketchup extract (TKE) and a tomato paste extract (TPE) in 80% (v/v) ethyl acetate for the experiment. TKE and TPE reduced lipid accumulation and key markers for gluconeogenesis and induced a higher rate of fatty acid oxidation in HepG2 hepatocytes. In 3T3-L1 adipocytes, TKE and TPE increased adipogenesis and intracellular triglyceride accumulation, and stimulated glucose uptake. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha and gamma expression levels were increased by TKE and TPE treatment. A single oral dose of tomato ketchup and tomato paste (9.28 g/kg) significantly improved glucose and insulin tolerance in mice. These findings suggest that lycopene-containing tomato ketchup and tomato paste may have beneficial regulatory effects in terms of energy metabolism in hepatocytes and adipocytes, and thus may improve blood glucose metabolism.

Abstract
This paper describes descriptive research to identify the effects of job stress, COVID-19 self-care behavior, and COVID-19 vaccination status according to the infection and non-infection of COVID-19 on anxiety about the COVID-19 infection among firefighters in South Korea. Data from 205 firefighters working at 10 fire stations were collected from 26 January to 16 February 2023. The variables used were job stress, COVID-19 self-care behavior, COVID-19 vaccination status, and COVID-19 infection anxiety. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression. In subjects who were infected with COVID-19, the factors that significantly affected infection anxiety were job stress (β = 0.247, p = 0.011) and self-care behavior (β = 0.343, p = 0.011). In subjects who were not infected with COVID-19, the factors that significantly affected infection anxiety were marriage status (unmarried) (β = -0.260, p = 0.005) and self-care behavior (β = 0.374, p = 0.001). These results demonstrate that the infection anxiety of firefighters should be prevented, and their physical and mental health should be promoted by considering job stress, self-care behavior, and personal environment.

Abstract
Nanoplastics (NPs) are derived from microplastics and may cause health problems. We previously showed that 100 nm polystyrene (PS)-NPs enter cells, including mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs), and their intracellular accumulation induces inflammatory and oxidative stress. Moreover, PS-NP uptake was found to occur via endocytosis, and they accumulated mostly at the juxtanuclear position, but never within the nucleus. We speculated that PS-NPs were cleared from cells when they were no longer exposed to PS-NPs. However, the effects of PS-NPs on the cellular machinery remain unknown. The accumulation of PS-NPs at the juxtanuclear position may be due to retrograde transport along microtubules. To confirm this, we treated PS-NP-exposed MEFs with inhibitors of histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6), dynein, or microtubule polymerization and found greatly diminished intracellular and juxtanuclear accumulation. Moreover, rapid clearance of PS-NPs was observed when MEFs were treated with an HDAC6 inhibitor. PS-NPs were removed by exocytosis, as confirmed by treatment with an exocytosis inhibitor. Furthermore, inhibiting the retrograde transport of PS-NPs alleviated the activation of the antioxidant response pathway, inflammatory and oxidative stress, and reactive oxygen species generation. In summary, inhibition of the retrograde transport of non-biodegradable PS-NPs leads to their rapid export by exocytosis, which may reduce their cytotoxicity.

Factors Associated with Return of Spontaneous Circulation following Pre-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea; a Cross-Sectional Study. Abstract
INTRODUCTION The probability of Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC) in cardiac arrest cases in pre-hospital setting is still low. This study aimed to identify the factors that may improve the rate of ROSC in patients with pre-hospital cardiac arrest. METHODS This retrospective cross-sectional study is a secondary data analysis of cardiac arrest patients, who were managed by paramedics in the pre-hospital setting, from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2019, in Daegu, South Korea. The association of ROSC with place of arrest occurrence, cardiac arrest being witnessed, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using compression device and defibrillator, administration of epinephrine, and intubation was analyzed and independent predictive factors of ROSC were reported. RESULTS 2750 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases, which were managed by paramedics in the pre-hospital setting were studied. 2034 (86.9%) cases of arrest had occurred at home, 2028 (73.7%) were not witnessed, and CPR was not performed for 1721 (64.1%) cases. ROSC before arriving to emergency department (ED) was more probable if the cardiac arrest was witnessed (p < 0.001), if CPR was performed (p = 0.044), if a mechanical compression device was used (p < 0.001), if a first-aid defibrillator was used (p < 0.001), and if intravenous access was secured (p < 0.001). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that using mechanical compression device (OR: 0.18; 95% CI = 0.08 - 0.40; p = 0.001), using first-aid defibrillator (OR: 3.13; 95% CI = 1.40 - 6.99; p = 0.005), administration of epinephrine (OR: 6.57; 95% CI = 2.16 - 19.53; p = 0.001), and intubation (OR: 1.82; 95% CI = 1.04-3.19; p = 0.001) were independent predictive factors of ROSC before arrival to ED. CONCLUSION It seems that chest compression by hand instead of using chest compression device, using defibrillator, epinephrine administration, and intubation my increase the probability of ROSC in pre-hospital arrest cases.

Abstract
Introduction: In this study, we wanted to examine how post-traumatic stress disorder was discussed in Korean newspaper articles with semantic network analysis suitable for unstructured big data analysis.
Methods: This study analyzed 11,304 articles related to post-traumatic stress reported by four major Korean newspapers for three years from July 30, 2017, to July 30, 2020. R 3.6.2 program was used to calculate TF and TF-IDF values, and UCINET 6.0 and interlocked NetDraw was used for DC, EC, and CONCOR values.
Results: As a result of deriving 50 major keywords with high TF-IDF values in newspaper articles related to a post-traumatic stress disorder, TF-IDF values were high in the order of 'sick leave', 'solitary confinement', 'detention center', 'standing order', and 'prisoner'. As a result of conducting a CONCOR analysis to determine which sub-clusters keywords are classified into, the researcher derived each cluster based on words included: 'PTSD by crops' (cluster 1), 'PTSD by broadcasting accidents' (clusters), 'PTSD by farm livestock accidents' (cluster 3), and 'PTSD by various accidents' (cluster 4).
Conclusions Based on the research results, post-traumatic stress disorder needs to be managed nationally. As such, we intend to provide basic data for policy development and intervention programs.

Abstract
Introduction Earthquakes can have a variety of physical, emotional, and social effects on the people who experience them. Post-traumatic Growth (PTG) results from people attempting to reconstruct their lives after experiencing a traumatic event. We intend to inform the local community of the importance of disaster psychology by identifying and analyzing the literature on post-traumatic growth experiences of subjects who experienced earthquakes. Methods This study applied a systematic review of qualitative research published from January 1, 2012 to January 31, 2021 to understand PTG in people who have experienced earthquakes. The search expressions "Post-traumatic Growth", "Earthquake", "Qualitative" were applied to CINAHL, EMBASE, PubMed, PsycInfo, KISS, RISS, and NDSL databases. Initially, 720 papers were found; after removal of duplicates, 318 remained. After a review of titles and abstracts, 186 papers that did not meet the selection criteria of this study were removed. After a further examination of the remaining 132 papers, the researchers removed 65 papers that did not match the research topic. Lastly, of the remaining 67 papers, detailed review eliminated quantitative papers that did not match this study (25), articles that were not original (19), articles in which results were not PTG (8), articles that were not related to this study (3), articles that were not written in English (2), or articles that had mixed topics (2). Eight papers remained. Results The results of this study show that the PTG in people who have experienced earthquakes can be classified into three categories: "Change in self-perception", "Change of interpersonal relationships", and "Spiritual change". They can be further classified into eight subcategories: "Reviewing one's existence", "Acceptance", "Discovering strengths by working through adversity", "Gratitude for life", "Changes in personal relations", "Changes in social relations", "Accepting the existence of God", and "A breakthrough to overcome difficulties". Discussion These results can be used as basic data for a positive psychological understanding for those who have experienced earthquake trauma.

Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to understand the differences in variables related to health and safety according to the employment type of Korean workers, specifically to identify the differences by employment type on in health status, the likelihood of wearing protective gear when working, access to manuals on emotional expression, and access to information on risk factors related to health and safety.
Methods: The secondary data of four items on employment type, health type of workers and safety among the 5th Korean Working Condition Survey conducted in 2017 in Korea was used in this study. The data of workers were processed by using SPSS/WIN 23.0 Program and R 3.1.2, and demographic characteristics were quantified as frequency and percentage.
Results: A total of 30,300 employed people were surveyed. The result shows that part-time workers have poorer health than full-time workers (c2 = 540.7155, p < 0.05), insufficiently wore protective gear (c2 = 24.8702, p < 0.05), had insufficient access to manuals on emotional expression (c2 = 27.7612, p < 0.05) and lacked information about risk factors (c2 = 185.0082, p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Health and safety manager will need to have education and consultation, development of manual and perform an early intervention to improve safety environment as primary health care providers by understanding factors related to health and safety of part-time workers.

Abstract
This study developed guidelines for psychological first aid. This guideline promotes core response and disaster capabilities for disaster mental-health professionals, such as mental-health nurses and counseling psychologists at disaster sites. A research team composed of a first-aid professor and counseling psychology professor developed this psychological first-aid guideline to promote the psychological response required at disaster sites. The team verified each question’s content adequacy at each guideline-development stage to determine the appropriateness of response to a disaster. The PFA performance stage and achievement objectives were moved to the next stage only when the research team fully agreed upon them. This guideline revised and supplemented the six steps suggested in the handbook to five steps through expert meetings. The modified part was made into one step, without separating the first rapport formation and safety check. The checklist for evaluation was developed after verification by a total of four people, including one emergency-rescue-department professor, one counseling psychology professor, one paramedic, and one health educator. Based on previous studies, the cutting point is 24 points. The final completed psychological first aid consists of five stages: rapport formation and safety verification, psychological stabilization, information collection, problem resolution, and recovery, with details to be carried out at each step. These guidelines contribute to the promotion of disaster-response capabilities of disaster psychologists. Continuous training and practical exercises based on the five stages will provide fundamental data for a disaster-simulation psychological-first-aid educational development.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was conducted to investigate the effects of corrective officers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices on job stress. The subjects of this study were 375 randomly selected male correctional officials working at five South Korean correctional facilities that had been affected by COVID-19. This study considered data collected with approval from 17 May 2021 to 14 June 2021. Knowledge, attitudes, practices, and job stress in relation to COVID-19 were assessed using a personal questionnaire. The data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and post-test using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The job stress of participants was negatively correlated with knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Significant factors influencing job stress included knowledge and practices. These factors explained 38% of the variance. In this study, knowledge and practices were identified as influencing the job stress of correctional officers. These results are intended to contribute to the development of programs that can enhance the COVID-19-related knowledge and practices of correctional officers and reduce job stress.

Abstract
Ubiquitin (Ub) is one of the proteins that are highly conserved from yeast to humans. It is an essential core unit of the well-defined post-translational modification, called ubiquitination, which is involved in a variety of biological processes. In meta-zoans, Ub is encoded by two monoubiquitin genes and two polyubiquitin genes, in which a single Ub is fused to a ribosomal protein or Ub coding units are arranged in tandem repeats. In mice, polyubiquitin genes (Ubb and Ubc) play a pivotal role to meet the requirement of cellular Ub pools during embryonic development. In addition, expression levels of polyubiquitin genes are increased to adapt to environmental stimuli such as oxidative, heat-shock, and proteotoxic stress. Several researchers have reported about the perturbation of Ub pools through genetic alteration or exogenous Ub delivery using diverse model systems. To study Ub pool changes in a physiologically relevant manner, changing Ub pools via the regulation of endogenous polyubiquitin gene expression has recently been introduced. Furthermore, to understand the regulation of polyubiquitin gene expression more precisely, cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors, which are regulatory components of polyubiquitin genes, have been analyzed. In this review, we discuss how the role of polyu-biquitin genes has been studied during the past decade, es-pecially focusing on their regulation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), including cerebrovascular and ischaemic heart disease beyond the peripartum period. DESIGN Population-based cohort study. SETTING Merged databases of the Korea National Health Insurance (KNHI) claims, National Health Screening Examination and National Health Screening Program for Infants and Children. POPULATION Women who gave birth in 2007 in the Republic of Korea and who were tracked through to 2015 for the occurrence of CVD. METHODS Patients were identified and the occurrences of PPH and transfusion were determined using the KNHI claims database. The occurrence of CVD was tracked through 2015 using codes from the International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision (ICD-10). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The risk of CVD after PPH. RESULTS Among 150 381 women who gave birth during the study period, 9107 were diagnosed with PPH and 899 were treated with transfusion. The risk of CVD in women with PPH was no different than in women without PPH, after adjustment (HR 1.03, 95% CI 0.93-1.13). The risk of CVD in women with PPH requiring transfusion was significantly increased compared with women without PPH, after adjustment (HR 1.60, 95% CI 1.25-2.06). The risk of CVD in women with PPH without transfusion was not significantly different compared with women without PPH (HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.86-1.07). CONCLUSIONS Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) requiring transfusion is associated with an increased risk of CVD. Guidelines for management should be established, and further studies on the mechanisms involved should be conducted. Abstract
Polystyrene (PS) and chemically modified compounds in the PS family have long been used in commercial and industrial fields. However, it is poorly understood whether nanoscale-PS microplastic or PS nanoplastic exposure leads to perturbations in fundamental cellular functions, such as proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Herein, we cultured three types of primary cells, including mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs), mixed neuronal cells isolated from embryonic cortex, and cortical astrocytes, and investigated the effects of their exposure to PS nanoplastics with a 100 nm diameter. Although PS nanoplastic exposure did not affect the viability of MEFs or astrocytes, it significantly reduced the viability of mixed neuronal cells. Consistent with the observed effect on cellular viability, levels of the apoptosis marker, cleaved caspase-3, were elevated exclusively in mixed neuronal cells. To investigate whether cells uptake PS nanoplastics into the cytoplasm, we exposed MEFs and neurons to fluorescent PS latex beads and monitored fluorescence over time. We found that PS nanoplastics were deposited and accumulated in the cytoplasm in a concentration-dependent manner. Although astrocytes were not apoptotic upon exposure to PS nanoplastics, they underwent reactive astrocytosis, with increased levels of lipocalin-2 and proinflammatory cytokines. Therefore, our findings suggested that the vulnerability of cells to the deposition and accumulation of PS nanoplastics in the cytoplasm was dependent on cell type. Furthermore, based on our data from primary cells originating from mouse brains, we suggest that reactive astrocytosis may contribute to the neuronal apoptosis seen in defective neurons with PS nanoplastics accumulated in the cell body.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The objective of this study was to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and both initial stroke severity at presentation and functional outcomes after acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). METHODS Patients were categorized on the basis of their BMI into underweight (BMI <18.5, n = 111), normal (18.5 ≤ BMI <25, n = 1036) and overweight to obese (BMI ≥25, n = 472) groups. Initial stroke severity was assessed using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and functional outcomes were assessed using the modified Rankin Scale score at discharge. The differences in stroke severity and functional outcomes were compared between groups using robust log-linear regression with a Poisson distribution and binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 1619 AIS patients with NVAF from six hospitals were included. Compared with the NIHSS scores [median 5, interquartile range (IQR) 2-14] of normal-weight patients, the NIHSS scores (median 9, IQR 4-19) of underweight patients were more likely to be higher, whereas those of overweight to obese patients were lower (median 4, IQR 1-12) (P < 0.001). In terms of functional outcomes after stroke, underweight patients had a higher risk of poor functional outcomes (odds ratio 1.78, 95% confidence interval 1.09-2.56, P = 0.01) but overweight to obese patients had no significant difference in functional outcomes compared with normal-weight patients. CONCLUSION An inverse association was found between BMI and stroke severity in AIS patients with NVAF. This suggests the presence of an obesity paradox for short-term outcomes in patients with NVAF.

Abstract
Ubiquitin is required under both normal and stress conditions. Under stress conditions, upregulation of the polyubiquitin gene UBC is essential to meet the requirement of increased ubiquitin levels to confer stress resistance. However, UBC upregulation is usually observed only under stress conditions and not under normal conditions. Therefore, it has not been possible to upregulate UBC under normal conditions to study the effect of excess ubiquitin on cellular machinery. Recently, the CRISPR/Cas9 system has been widely used in biological research as a useful tool to study gene disruption effects. In this study, using an inducible CRISPR/Cas9 variant, a dCas9-VP64 fusion protein, combined with a single guide RNA (sgRNA) containing MS2 aptamer loops and MS2-p65-HSF1, we developed a system to increase the ubiquitin pool via upregulation of UBC. Although it is challenging to upregulate the expression of a gene that is already expressed at high levels, the significance of our system is that UBC upregulation can be induced in an efficient, reversible manner that is compatible with cellular processes, even under normal conditions. This system can be used to study ubiquitin pool dynamics and it will be a useful tool in identifying the role of ubiquitin under normal and stress conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adhesion molecules maintain the intestinal barrier function that is crucial to prevent intestinal inflammation. Dual immunoglobulin domain-containing adhesion molecule (DICAM) has been recently identified and known for the involvement in cell-cell adhesion through homophilic interaction and heterophilic interaction with integrin αVβ3. We tested whether the change of DICAM expression affects the severity of colonic inflammation. METHODS Colitis was induced with oral administration of 2.5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in 8-week-old male mice for 5 days. The function of DICAM under inflammatory condition was investigated using loss-of-function and gain-of-function models such as DICAM-deficient mice and adenoviral transduction of DICAM into Caco-2 colonic epithelial cells. RESULTS DICAM increased in parallel with the degree of inflammation after 5-day administration of DSS and decreased with the resolution of inflammation. DICAM was expressed in the epithelial junctional complex and colocalized with ZO-1. Treatment with TNF-α or IFN-γ in Caco-2 cells significantly increased DICAM in protein and RNA level. The DICAM knockout mice showed more severe DSS-induced colitis compared with WT littermates. Adenoviral transduction of DICAM into Caco-2 cells significantly attenuated the inflammation-mediated decrease of adhesion molecules, including ZO-1 and occludin. Furthermore, Caco-2 cells with DICAM overexpression maintained intestinal barrier function under IFN-γ treatment as estimated by transepithelial electrical resistance. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that DICAM which is increased in an inflammatory condition has a protective role in experimental colitis by stabilizing the integrity of junctional complex in the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite recent advance in conventional cancer therapies including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy to reduce tumor size, unfortunately cancer mortality and metastatic cancer incidence remain high. Along with a deeper understanding of stem cell biology, cancer stem cell (CSC) is important in targeted cancer therapy. Herein, we review representative patents using not only normal stem cells as therapeutics themselves or delivery vehicles, but also CSCs as targets for anti-cancer strategy. METHODS Relevant patent literatures published between 2005 and 2017 are discussed to present developmental status and experimental results on using normal stem cells and CSCs for cancer therapy and explore potential future directions in this field. RESULTS Stem cells have been considered as important element of regenerative therapy by promoting tissue regeneration. Particularly, there is a growing trend to use stem cells as a target drug-delivery system to reduce undesirable side effects in non-target tissues. Noteworthy, studies on CSC-specific markers for distinguishing CSCs from normal stem cells and mature cancer cells have been conducted as a selective anti-cancer therapy with few side effects. Many researchers have also reported the development of various substances with anticancer effects by targeting CSCs from cancer tissues. CONCLUSION There has been a continuing increase in the number of studies on therapeutic stem cells and CSC-specific markers for selective diagnosis and therapy of cancer. This review focuses on the current status in the use of normal stem cells and CSCs for targeted cancer therapy. Future direction is also proposed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on spinal osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS AND DESIGN A cross-sectional study of a nationwide survey was performed. SETTING This study collected data from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2012). PARTICIPANTS After excluding ineligible respondents, the total number of participants in this study was 4265 females. Participants were asked to report symptoms and disabilities related to spinal OA. In addition, plain radiographs of the spine were taken of all patients. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Demographic and lifestyle variables were compared between the HRT and non-HRT groups. In addition, radiographic examination and symptom assessment were performed to determine the existence of spinal OA. RESULTS Marital status, education, income and HRT were correlated with spinal OA. A risk analysis of related factors showed that HRT and age had effects on spinal OA (ORs 0.717 and 1.257). Nevertheless, in the HRT group, smokers had a increased risk of spinal OA. In addition, the HRT group demonstrated a lower prevalence of spinal OA. The calculated risk for compromised morbidity with HRT compared with the prevalence of spinal OA was 0.717 (OR). The duration of HRT was also related to the risk for spinal OA. The group that had been taking HRT for more than 1 year showed decreased risk (OR 0.686) compared with patients with <1 year of HRT (OR 0.744; P<0.05). CONCLUSION Women receiving HRT showed a lower prevalence of spinal OA. HRT also correlated with a decrease in spinal OA morbidity.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis is prominent among the elderly, with symptoms originating from multiple parts of the body. A cross-sectional study of a nationwide survey was performed to describe the prevalence of and identify factors related to symptomatic hip, knee, and spine osteoarthritis.This cross-sectional study collected data from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-5; 2010-2012). After excluding ineligible subjects, there were 8976 subjects in this study (3830 males and 5146 females). All subjects reported symptoms and disabilities related to osteoarthritis. Plain radiographs of the spine, hip, and knee were taken in all subjects.Overall, 9.3% of male participants and 28.5% of female participants were diagnosed with symptomatic osteoarthritis according to survey criteria. Women showed a significantly higher prevalence in all age groups (P < 0.05). Multiple-joint osteoarthritis was diagnosed in 10.8% of male patients and 22.8% of female patients with osteoarthritis. Several demographic and lifestyle variables were related to osteoarthritis morbidity. Anthropometric and laboratory measurements were also related to osteoarthritis morbidity. In addition, mental distress and quality of life were significantly compromised in osteoarthritis. There were more significant relationships for these factors among women with a higher prevalence of multijoint osteoarthritis.A significant proportion of the elderly with single- or multiple-joint osteoarthritis had a variety of pain origins that were closely related. Osteoarthritis was also significantly related to several factors, including mental distress and quality of life.

Abstract
There is a greater incidence of discoid meniscus in Asian countries than in Western countries, and bilateral discoid menisci are also common. The discoid meniscus may be a congenital anomaly, and genetics or family history may play a role in the development of discoid menisci. Because the histology of discoid meniscus is different from that of normal meniscus, it is prone to tearing. Individuals with a discoid meniscus can be asymptomatic or symptomatic. Asymptomatic discoid menisci do not require treatment. However, operative treatment is necessary if there are symptoms. Total meniscectomy leads to an increased risk of osteoarthritis. Therefore, total meniscectomy is generally reserved for rare unsalvageable cases. Partial meniscectomy (saucerization) with preservation of a stable peripheral rim combined with or without peripheral repair is effective, and good short-, mid-, and long-term clinical results have been reported.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the association between caudal block and postoperative complications after tubularised incised plate urethroplasty. The medical records of 388 paediatric patients who underwent urethroplasty at a tertiary medical centre were analysed retrospectively. Among the 342 patients included, 216 patients received a caudal block and 72 (21.1%) patients suffered surgical complications. The number of patients having surgical complications was significantly greater among patients who received a caudal block than among patients who did not receive a caudal block (53 (24.5%) versus 19 (15.1%), respectively, p = 0.04). Based on multivariate logistic regression analysis, duration of surgery, caudal block and hypospadias types were independent risk factors for the surgical complications. Patients with caudal block had an odds ratio of 2.1 (95% CI, 1.14-3.81, p = 0.018) for the development of postoperative complications compared with patients without caudal block. This analysis demonstrates that caudal block is associated with surgical complications after tubularised incised plate urethroplasty.

Abstract
In order to identify novel fusion transcripts in colorectal cancer, we carried out paired-end RNA sequencing in 28 human colorectal cancer cell lines. Fusion transcript candidates were identified using ChimeraScan and FusionMap tools. We obtained 1380 candidates having 4 or more read counts and spanning reads. Among the candidates, we selected 27 candidates for validation which harbors genes related to the Wnt signaling pathway or kinases according to KEGG or DAVID. After the targeted gene filtering step, validation using RT-PCR with fusion specific primers finally resulted in 2 intra- and 1 inter-fusion transcripts. Intra-fusion transcripts were NFATC3-PLA2G15 and AKAP13-PDE8A and inter-fusion transcript was KRT8-PKM2 each identified in colo-320, SW-480 and SNU-1235, respectively. The fusion junctions were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. NFATC3-PLA2G15 fusion transcripts consisted of exon 1-9 of NFATC3 (nuclear factor of activated T-cells, cytoplasmic 3) gene and exon 2-6 of the PLA2G15 (Phospholipase A2, Group 5) gene and both located on the same chromosome 16q. NFATC3 is known as transcription factor in the Wnt signaling pathway and regulates function of the target genes like cell proliferation, invasion and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Under the experiments using siRNA in the colo-320 cell carrying fusion transcript, knockdown of the NFATC3-PLA2G15 fusion transcript decreased mRNA and protein expression of mesenchymal markers, namely vimentin (VIM), Twist-related protein 1 (TWIST1) and fibronectin (FN), and increased epithelial markers, E-cadherin (CDH1) and claudin-1 (CLDN1). Fusion transcripts knockdown also led to decrease of the invasion ability regulated by above markers. Moreover, soft agar assay showed inhibition of colony formation after fusion transcript knockdown. Fusion transcript downregulation also resulted in decrease of cell proliferation and mRNA and protein expression of cyclin D but increase in p27 level. The knockdown did not have influence in the fusion negative cell line. Collectively, these results suggest that the NFATC3-PLA2G15 fusion transcript is involved in invasion and proliferation of colorectal cancer cells.

Abstract
The CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF)/cohesin complex regulates gene transcription via high-order chromatin organization of the genome. De novo methylation of CpG islands in the promoter region is an epigenetic hallmark of gene silencing in cancer. Although the CTCF/cohesin complex preferentially targets hypomethylated DNA, it remains unclear whether the CTCF/cohesin-mediated high-order chromatin structure is affected by DNA methylation during tumorigenesis. We found that DNA methylation downregulates the expression of prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), which is an inducible, rate-limiting enzyme for prostaglandin synthesis, by disrupting CTCF/cohesin-mediated chromatin looping. We show that the CTCF/cohesin complex is enriched near a CpG island associated with PTGS2 and that the PTGS2 locus forms chromatin loops through methylation-sensitive binding of the CTCF/cohesin complex. DNA methylation abolishes the association of the CTCF/cohesin complex with the PTGS2 CpG island. Disruption of chromatin looping by DNA methylation abrogates the enrichment of transcriptional components, such as positive elongation factor b, at the transcriptional start site of the PTGS2 locus. These alterations result in the downregulation of PTGS2. Our results provide evidence that CTCF/cohesin-mediated chromatin looping of the PTGS2 locus is dynamically influenced by the DNA methylation status.

Abstract
We examined the local structural and the interfacial properties of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) (YBCO)/ZnO nanorods on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates using various measurements. Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were synthesized on STO substrates using a catalyst-free metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. YBCO films were deposited ex-situ on the ZnO nanorods/STO templates using a DC magnetron sputtering deposition. X-ray diffraction revealed that the YBCO films were crystallized along their c-axes on the ZnO nanorods/STO templates. Transmission electron microscopy measurements demonstrated that YBCO filled the space between ZnO nanorods and that both interfaces of YBCO/ZnO nanorods and ZnO nanorods/STO were quite clean with no disorder. Polarization-dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements at the Cu K edge showed extra disorder in the CuO2 planes of YBCO/ZnO nanorods/STO, compared with that of YBCO/STO. The superconductivity transition temperature (T(c)) of YBCO/ZnO nanorods/STO was approximately 50 K whereas that of YBCO/STO was 93 K. The decrease of T(c) of YBCO/ZnO nanorods/STO was ascribed to the structural disorder of CuO2 planes as well as grain boundaries in the YBCO films.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a pleiotropic immunoregulatory cytokine with a chondroprotective effect that is elevated in cartilage and synovium in patients with osteoarthritis. However, the role of IL-10 during endochondral bone formation and its mechanism of action have not been elucidated. METHODS IL-10(-/-) mice and IL-10-treated tibial organ cultures were used to study loss and gain of IL-10 functions, respectively, during endochondral bone formation. Primary chondrocytes from the long bones of mouse embryos were cultured with and without IL-10. To assess the role of IL-10 in chondrogenic differentiation, we conducted mesenchymal cell micromass cultures. RESULTS The lengths of whole skeletons from IL-10(-/-) mice were similar to those of their wild-type littermates, although their skull diameters were smaller. The tibial growth plates of IL-10(-/-) mice showed shortening of the proliferating zone. Treatment with IL-10 significantly increased tibial lengths in organ culture. IL-10 also induced chondrocyte proliferation and hypertrophic differentiation in primary chondrocytes in vitro. Mechanistically, IL-10 activated STAT-3 and the Smad1/5/8 and ERK-1/2 MAP kinase pathways and induced the expression of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and BMP-6 in primary chondrocytes. Furthermore, the blocking of BMP signaling attenuated the IL-10-mediated induction of cyclin D1 and RUNX-2 in primary chondrocytes and suppressed Alcian blue and alkaline phosphatase staining in mesenchymal cell micromass cultures. CONCLUSION These results indicate that IL-10 acts as a stimulator of chondrocyte proliferation and chondrogenic or hypertrophic differentiation via activation of the BMP signaling pathway.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics of patients with resistant hypertension (RH) and predictors among elderly Korean hypertensives. This prospective, multi-center, observational study evaluated 2439 elderly hypertensive patients between December 2008 and November 2011, who visited secondary hypertension clinics for high blood pressure (BP). Patients were categorized as resistant if their BP was ≥140/90 mm Hg and if they reported using antihypertensive medications from three different drug classes, including a diuretic or drugs from ≥4 antihypertensive drug classes, regardless of BP. Characteristics of patients with RH were compared with those of patients who were controlled with one or two antihypertensive medications after 6-month antihypertensive treatment. In comparison with 837 patients with non-RH, 404 patients with RH were more likely to be aware of their status of high BP before enrollment and have a high baseline systolic BP ≥160 mm Hg, microalbuminuria, high body mass index (BMI) ≥24 kg m(-2) and diabetes mellitus (DM). In drug-naive patients, awareness of hypertension at baseline was the only independent predictor for RH. In elderly Korean hypertensives, BMI (≥24 kg m(-2)), baseline systolic BP (≥160 mm Hg), microalbuminuria, DM and awareness of hypertension showed an association with RH.

Abstract
The orientation-dependent structural properties of Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O nanorods with different Mg concentrations were investigated quantitatively using polarization-dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Zn K edge. Vertically-aligned Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O nanorods were synthesized on Si substrates using catalyst free metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Polarization-dependent EXAFS measurements showed that Mg ions mainly occupied the Zn sites of the nanorods. EXAFS revealed that the distance between Zn-Mg pairs in all directions is - 0.2 angstroms shorter than that of Zn-Zn pairs and that there is a substantial amount of disorder in the Mg sites of the nanorods, independent of Mg concentrations.

Abstract
Background: S1 and oxaliplatin (SOX) combination chemotherapy is an effective regimen in anthracycline and taxane pretreated metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients with manageable toxicities (KCSG BR07-03, SABCS 2011 #Abst P3-16-06). The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and clinical outcome in MBC treated with SOX chemotherapy.
Patients and Methods: A total of 87 MBC patients previously treated with or resistant to anthracycline and taxane chemotherapy were enrolled in this prospective multicenter trial. The patients received S-1 80mg/m2/day (day 1–14) and oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 (day 1) every 3 weeks till progression. Among the 87 patients, 77 patients were available for SNP analysis. Germline DNA from peripheral blood (PB) mononuclear cells was extracted. SNPs in 4 genes from pathways that may influence cellular sensitivity to S1 and oxaliplatin (TS, ERCC, XPD, and XRCC) were genotyped from PB sample using PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism.
Results: Overall response rate (RR) was 38.5% (95% CI: 27.7–49.3) and disease control rate was 67.9% (95% CI:57.5–78.3) to SOX. Median time-to-progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS) were 6.0 mo (95% CI: 5.1–6.9 mo) and 19.4 mo (95% CI: not estimated), respectively. XRCC1 Arg194Trp SNP which participates in DNA repair mechanism showed correlation with the clinical outcome. RR was tend to higher in XRCC1 Arg194Trp CC genotype compared with CT or TT genotype (50.0 % vs 35.1% or 12.5%, P = 0.121). TTP of patients with CC genotype in XRCC1 Arg194Trp was significantly longer than the TTP of patients with CT or TT genotype (median TTP: 6.4 mo in CC, 5.9 mo in CT, 3.0 mo in TT, P = 0.007) as well as overall survival (OS) (median OS: not reached in CC, 13.9 mo in CT, 7.1 mo in TT, P = 0.006). After adjusting for hormone receptor status, performance status, and visceral involvement, prognostic value of XRCC1 Arg194Trp SNP remained significant (Hazard Ratio=1.322 and 4.484, P = 0.016). Other SNPs were not significantly associated with survival or toxicities.
Conclusion: XRCC1 Arg194Trp SNP is associated with clinical outcome of MBC patients treated with SOX chemotherapy. Further studies of the relationship between germline polymorphisms in XRCC1 and functional mechanism researches are warranted.

Abstract
Peripheral-nerve injuries are a common clinical problem and often result in long-term functional deficits. Reconstruction of peripheral-nerve defects is currently undertaken with nerve autografts. However, there is a limited availability of nerves that can be sacrificed and the functional recovery is never 100% satisfactory. We have previously shown that gene therapy with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) significantly improved nerve regeneration, neuronal survival, and muscle activity. Our hypothesis is that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) synergizes with VEGF to improve the functional outcome after sciatic nerve transection. The left sciatic nerves and the adjacent muscle groups of adult mice were exposed, and 50 or 100 μg (in 50 μl PBS) of VEGF and/or G-CSF genes was injected locally, just below the sciatic nerve, and transferred by electroporation. The sciatic nerves were transected and placed in an empty polycaprolactone (PCL) nerve guide, leaving a 3-mm gap to challenge nerve regeneration. After 6 weeks, the mice were perfused and the sciatic nerve, the dorsal root ganglion (DRG), the spinal cord and the gastrocnemius muscle were processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. Treated animals showed significant improvement in functional and histological analyses compared with the control group. However, the best results were obtained with the G-CSF+VEGF-treated animals: quantitative analysis of regenerated nerves showed a significant increase in the number of myelinated fibers and blood vessels, and the number of neurons in the DRG and motoneurons in the spinal cord was significantly higher. Motor function also showed that functional recovery occurred earlier in animals receiving G-CSF+VEGF-treatment. The gastrocnemius muscle showed an increase in weight and in the levels of creatine phosphokinase, suggesting an improvement of reinnervation and muscle activity. These results suggest that these two factors acted synergistically and optimized the nerve repair potential, improving regeneration after a transection lesion.

Abstract
Dual immunoglobulin (Ig) domain-containing adhesion molecule (DICAM) is involved in cell-cell adhesion through a heterophilic interaction with αVβ3 integrin, which suggests that DICAM may participate in osteoclast differentiation. DICAM was localized in the plasma membrane of RAW264.7 and THP-1 cells, and its expression gradually increased during osteoclastogenesis in mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) treated with receptor activator of nuclear factor κ-B ligand (RANKL) and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF). Forced expression of DICAM in BMMs and RAW264.7 cells blocked the generation of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive osteoclasts. Conversely, knockdown of DICAM by small hairpin RNA (shRNA) increased osteoclast formation in RAW264.7 cells. DICAM-mediated suppression of osteoclast differentiation was in part due to the inhibition of the p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway, which was corroborated by a decrease in the expression of c-Fos and nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT)c1. Mechanistically, DICAM directly interacted with integrin β3, which inhibited heterodimerization between integrin αV and β3. Exogenous expression of integrin β3 or high-dose M-CSF rescued DICAM-mediated inhibition of osteoclastogenesis, suggesting crosstalk between the integrin β3 and c-Fms pathways. Finally, recombinant DICAM ectodomain suppressed the RANKL- and M-CSF-induced osteoclastogenesis of BMMs. Collectively, these results indicate that DICAM acts as a negative regulator of osteoclast differentiation by suppressing the integrin αVβ3 pathway.

Abstract
The chemokine receptor [C-C chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5)] is expressed on diverse immune effecter cells and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study sought to determine whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the CCR5 gene and their haplotypes were associated with susceptibility to and severity of RA. Three hundred fifty-seven patients with RA and 383 healthy unrelated controls were recruited. Using a pyrosequencing assay, we examined four polymorphisms -1118 CTAT(ins) (/del) (rs10577983), 303 A>G (rs1799987), 927 C>T (rs1800024), and 4838 G>T (rs1800874) of the CCR5 gene, which were distributed over the promoter region as well as the 5' and 3' untranslated regions. No significant difference in the genotype, allele, and haplotype frequencies of the four selected SNPs was observed between RA patients and controls. CCR5 polymorphisms of -1118 CTAT(del) (P = 0.012; corrected P = 0.048) and 303 A>G (P = 0.012; corrected P = 0.048) showed a significant association with radiographic severity in a recessive model, and, as a result of multivariate logistic regression analysis, were found to be an independent predictor of radiographic severity. When we separated the erosion score from the total Sharp score, the statistical significance of CCR5 polymorphisms showed an increase; -1118 CTAT(ins) (/del) (P = 0.007; corrected P = 0.028) and 303 A>G (P = 0.007; corrected P = 0.028). Neither SNPs nor haplotypes of the CCR5 gene showed a significant association with joint space narrowing score. These results indicate that genetic polymorphisms of CCR5 are an independent risk factor for radiographic severity denoted by modified Sharp score, particularly joint erosion in RA.

Background
Oxaliplatin, a platinum analogue, is an active drug in advanced anthracycline and taxane-pretreated breast cancer patients as a single agent and with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) combination. TS-1 was developed by the scientific theory of both potentiating antitumor activity of 5-FU and reducing gastrointestinal toxicity. This trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TS-1 in combination with oxaliplatin in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients previously treated with anthracycline and taxane chemotherapy.
Methods: Between October 2007 and October 2009, MBC patients were enrolled in this prospective multicenter trial. Eligible criteria included age ≥18 years, at least one measurable lesion, prior treatment with anthracycline and taxane chemotherapy, and ECOG Performance Status 0–2. TS-1 40 mg/m2 b.i.d. on days 1–14 with oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 on day 1 were administered every 3 weeks till disease progression. Primary end-point was response rate, and secondary end-points were time-to-progression (TTP), overall survival (OS), duration of response (DOR) and toxicities. Response was evaluated every 6 weeks according to the RECIST criteria v. 1.0 and toxicity was assessed with NCICTCAE v.3.0.(ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT00527930).
Results: A total of 87 patients were enrolled. Median age was 48 years (range 30–71 years). Nineteen patients (21.8%) had de novo stage IV and 68 patients (78.2%) had recurrent disease. Thirty-five patients (40.2%) received two-lines of prior chemotherapy in palliative setting. Forty-eight patients (55.2%) had ≥ 3 disease sites. Fifty-four patients (62.1%) were hormone receptor positive, and 25 patients (28.7%) were triple negative. Five patients received prior anti-HER2 therapy. A total of 525 cycles were administered (median 6 cycles, range: 1 ∼ 22+ cycle). In per-protocol analysis, overall response rate was 38.5% (95% CI: 27.7−49.3) (CR 0%, PR 38.5%) and disease control rate (CR, PR, and SD) was 67.9% (95% CI: 57.5−78.3). Median TTP, OS, and DOR were 6.0 months (95% CI: 5.1−6.9 months), 19.4 months (95% CI: not estimated), 6.6 months (95% CI: 3.7−9.6 months), respectively. RR was not different by triple negativity (39.1% in TNBC vs. 38.2% in non-TNBC, P=0.361). TTP was not different according to the number of prior chemotherapy regimens. Reported grade 3 or 4 toxicities (per cycle) were neutropenia (10.3%), thrombocytopenia (5.5%), diarrhea (1.9%), vomiting (1.9%), and stomatitis (0.2%). There was no treatment-related death.
Conclusions: SOX is an effective regimen in anthracycline and taxane pretreated MBC patients with manageable toxicities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the variability in cerebral activation according to pain intensity and the association between variability in cerebral activation and clinical features in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS Nineteen FMS female patients and 22 age-matched healthy female controls were enrolled in this study. Changes in cerebral activation area were measured using blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast fMRI after application of both medium and high pressure stimuli to the left thumbnail bed. RESULTS We identified the insular cortex (IC) and superior temporal gyrus (STG) as regions of interest (ROIs) in this analysis. Cerebral activation at the bilateral IC in response to high pressure stimuli was significantly greater in FMS patients than it was in the controls, whereas there were no differences in BOLD signal changes in the STG regions between FMS patients and controls, irrespective of pain level. Prominent signal changes at both ROIs in FMS patients were noted between high and medium pressure (p<0.001 contralateral IC, p=0.001 for ipsilateral IC, p=0.008 for contralateral STG, and p=0.049 for ipsilateral STG). BOLD signal changes on the contralateral STG after medium stimuli were correlated with tender point count (r=0.586, p=0.013). CONCLUSIONS This study revealed more distinct signal variability in the ICs in FMS patients than in those of controls in response to high pressure stimuli. The IC can therefore be considered to be a region susceptible to pain perception in FMS patients.

Abstract
Lung carcinoma is the leading cause of carcinoma death in the world. Despite recent advances in understanding the molecular biology of lung cancer and the introduction of new therapeutic agents for its treatment, its dismal 5-year survival rate has not changed substantially. Clinical approaches have not significantly improved the survival of patients with advanced lung cancer. However, recent discoveries about the molecular mechanisms responsible for lung cancer initiation and proliferation have unveiled new targets for therapy. One of the hallmark features of cancer cells is their ability to evade programmed cell death or apoptosis. Alterations in pro- and anti-apoptotic pathways are common in cancer cells and defects in regulation of apoptosis have been implicated in both lung tumorigenesis and drug resistance. Thus, targeting apoptosis through the direct or indirect manipulation of the pro-apoptotic machinery offers a novel strategy for treatment. This mini review summaries the molecular events that contribute to drug-induced apoptosis and how lung tumors evade apoptotic death followed by an analysis of the implications for treatment.

Abstract
The main objective of the present study was to find suitable DNA-targeting sequences (DTS) for the construction of plasmid vectors to be used to treat ischemic diseases. The well-known Simian virus 40 nuclear DTS (SV40-DTS) and hypoxia-responsive element (HRE) sequences were used to construct plasmid vectors to express the human vascular endothelial growth factor gene (hVEGF). The rate of plasmid nuclear transport and consequent gene expression under normoxia (20% O2) and hypoxia (less than 5% O2) were determined. Plasmids containing the SV40-DTS or HRE sequences were constructed and used to transfect the A293T cell line (a human embryonic kidney cell line) in vitro and mouse skeletal muscle cells in vivo. Plasmid transport to the nucleus was monitored by real-time PCR, and the expression level of the hVEGF gene was measured by ELISA. The in vitro nuclear transport efficiency of the SV40-DTS plasmid was about 50% lower under hypoxia, while the HRE plasmid was about 50% higher under hypoxia. Quantitation of reporter gene expression in vitro and in vivo, under hypoxia and normoxia, confirmed that the SV40-DTS plasmid functioned better under normoxia, while the HRE plasmid was superior under hypoxia. These results indicate that the efficiency of gene expression by plasmids containing DNA binding sequences is affected by the concentration of oxygen in the medium.

Abstract
The quantum-well state (QWS) has been observed on the surface of Cu/Fe/Cu(111). The confinement of the states on the top Cu layers is due to the minority spin barrier of the Fe underlayer. This QWS coexists with the Shockley surface state, which is observed on a clean Cu(111) surface. The resonant behavior of this QWS versus photon energy results from the vertical transition to the unoccupied bulk band, which is possibly due to the coupling between the overlayer Cu and the substrate Cu(111).

Abstract
The low-energy quasiparticle (QP) dynamics of graphite are governed by a coupling with the E(2g) longitudinal optical phonon of omega(LO) approximately 200 meV, which is found to dramatically depend on the electronic band dispersion epsilon(k). A discontinuity of the QP linewidth develops near omega(LO) for a linear band with a quadratic band top [near the Brillouin zone (BZ) K point], while it disappears for a pure linear band (near the BZ H point). It is also found that the effective electron-phonon coupling near the K point is stronger than near the H point by more than 50%. This finding makes possible a consistent understanding of recent angle-resolved photoemission observations near the K point.
