Selenate bioreduction in a large in situ field trial. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2024; 933:172869. Abstract
Removing selenium (Se) from mine effluent is a common challenge. A long-term, in situ experiment was conducted to bioremediate large volumes (up to 7500 mc d-1) of Se(VI)-contaminated water (mean 87 μg L-1) by injecting the water into a saturated waste rock fill (SRF) at a coal mining operation in Elk Valley, British Columbia, Canada. To stimulate/maintain biofilm growth in the SRF, labile organic carbon (methanol) and nutrients were added to the water prior to its injection. A conservative tracer (Br-) was also added to track the migration of injected water across the SRF, identify wells with minimal dilution and used to quantify the extent of bioreduction. The evolution of the Se species through the SRF was monitored in time and space for 201 d. Selenium concentrations of <3.8 μg L-1 were attained in monitoring wells located 38 m from the injection wells after 114 to 141 d of operation. Concentrations of Se species in water samples from complementary long-term (351-498 d) column experiments using influent Se(VI) concentrations of 1.0 mg L-1 were consistent with the results of the in situ experiment. Solid samples collected at the completion of the column experiments confirmed the presence of indigenous Se-reducing bacteria and that the sequestered Se was present as insoluble Se(0), likely in Se-S ring compounds. Based on the success of this ongoing bioremediation experiment, this technology is being applied at other mine sites.

Abstract
Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) is widely cultivated for its nutritional and medicinal value yet remains an orphan crop as productivity has not been improved because of a lack of genome and non-coding genome information. Non-coding RNAs, like miRNAs and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), are involved in regulation of growth, metabolism, development, and stress response, and have a critical role in post-transcriptional gene regulation (PTGR). We attempted to elucidate the roles of miRNAs and lncRNAs in pigeon pea through experimental validation of computationally predicted miRNAs and lncRNAs and targets of miRNAs on mRNAs. We experimentally validated 20 miRNAs and 11 lncRNAs. We predicted cleavage sites of three miRNA targets: serine/threonine-protein kinase, polygalacturonase, beta-galactosidase. We identified 469 targets of 265 miRNAs and their functional annotations using computational methods. We built a miRNA-mRNA-lncRNA network model, with the miRNAs targeting both mRNAs and lncRNAs, to obtain information on the interplay of these three molecules. A confirmed interaction through experimental validation was established between miRNA, namely cca-miR1535a targeting the mRNA for beta-galactosidase, as well as the lncRNA cca-lnc-020033. Our findings increase knowledge of the non-coding genome of pigeon pea and their roles in PTGR and in improving agronomic traits of this pulse crop.

Abstract
The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c^{2}. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36 GeV/c^{2}, rejecting cross sections above 9.2×10^{-48} cm at the 90% confidence level.

Quantifying denitrification in a field-scale bioremediation experiment. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 854:158762. Abstract
Nitrate (NO3-) in mine waste rock derived from undetonated NH4NO3 can contaminate receiving waters. An in-situ bioremediation experiment was conducted at a coal mining operation in Elk Valley, British Columbia, Canada to remediate NO3- from large volumes of mine water. Over the test period (201 d), 5000 to 7500 m3 d-1 of NO3--rich (mean concentration 22 mg N L-1) mine water was injected into saturated waste rock along with methanol, nutrients, and a conservative tracer (Br-). Complete denitrification (<0.5 mg N L-1) was recorded in monitoring wells located 38 m from the injection wells after 114 to 141 d of operation. Plots of δ15N- and δ18O-NO3- versus NO3--N concentrations for monitoring wells yielded isotopic enrichment factors (ε) for δ15N- and δ18O-NO3- of -25.7 and -13.2 ‰ for high C/C0 NO3- concentrations (>10.5 mg N L-1) and -5.5 and -3.6 ‰ for lower C/C0 values. The fraction of NO3- denitrified (Dp) calculated using bi-linear ε values for δ15N- and δ18O reproduced the Dp determined independently using a conservative tracer indicating that stable isotope tracers of the NO3- reducing processes in bioremediation are invaluable to determine Dp. Based on the success of this ongoing bioremediation experiment, the technology is being applied at other sites.

Effects of Wu’s Slip and Non-Uniform Source/Sink on Entropy Optimized Radiative Magnetohydrodynamic Up/Down Flow of Nanofluids. JOURNAL OF NANOFLUIDS 2022. Abstract
The main goal of this article is to examine the influence of shape factors, Wu’s slip, non-uniform heat source/sink on the radiative up and down hydromagnetic flow of SWCNT/MWCNT-water nanofluid past moving thin vertical needle. Entropy optimization analysis is carried out. Brick,
Cylinder, Platelet and Blade shapes of nanoparticles are considered. Numerical solutions are attained by well-known shooting technique. The comprehensive discussion regarding the effects of physical parameters on velocity, temperature, skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt number is
carried on. Outcomes reveal that fluid velocity behaves in opposite manner in up and down flows of nanofluids in the presence of increasing magnetic field strength and second order slip. Strengthening of solid volume fractions contributes greater surface drag in both up and down flows. Moreover,
the shape effects of various kinds of SWCNT/MWCNT nanoparticles are studied and we visualized that the rate of heat transfer is augmented when the platelet shape of SWCNT/MWCNT nanoparticles are chosen.

Bimekizumab for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis: efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and transcriptomics from a phase IIa, randomized, double-blind multicentre study. Br J Dermatol 2021; 186:652-663. Abstract
BACKGROUND Bimekizumab is a monoclonal antibody that selectively inhibits both interleukin (IL)-17A and IL-17F, which is currently under investigation for treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Maintenance dosing every 4 weeks is well established with IL-17 inhibitors for psoriasis. OBJECTIVES To investigate the possible dosing interval during bimekizumab maintenance therapy to maintain clear skin, to inform phase III studies. METHODS Forty-nine patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis received bimekizumab 320 mg at weeks 0/4, followed at week 16 by bimekizumab 320 mg (n = 17) or placebo (n = 32). Efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics, immunogenicity and biopsy transcriptomic analyses were assessed to week 28. RESULTS At week 8, 47% of patients achieved a 100% improvement from baseline in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 100), increasing to 57% at week 12 (8 weeks after the second dose) before decreasing. In those who received bimekizumab at week 16, PASI 100 rate increased to comparable peak levels at week 20, but reduced by week 28 to 41% (12 weeks after the third dose). The week 8 transcriptional signature observed in lesional psoriatic skin rapidly normalized to levels consistent with nonlesional skin, resulting in molecular remission. Keratinocyte-related gene products such as CXCL1 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 1), IL-8 (encoded by the CXCL8 gene), CCL20 (C-C motif chemokine 20), IL-36γ and IL-17C were profoundly normalized to levels associated with nonlesional skin. CONCLUSIONS Here, inhibition of IL-17F in addition to IL-17A resulted in rapid, deep clinical responses. Additionally, profound normalization of keratinocyte biology and the psoriatic transcriptome was observed, including normalization of both IL17 and IL23 gene expression by week 8. These data provide evidence to support evaluation of bimekizumab maintenance dosing both every 8 and every 4 weeks in phase III clinical trials.

A Numerical Approach to the Modeling of Thomson and Troian Slip on Nonlinear Radiative Microrotation of Casson Carreau Nanomaterials in Magnetohydrodynamics. JOURNAL OF NANOFLUIDS 2021. Abstract
The goal of the current work is to explore the influence of Thompson and Troian slip on the hydromagnetic microrotations of Carreau nanomaterials over a linearly stretched surface subject to NLTR, viscous dissipation, Newtonian heating, homogenous and heterogeneous reactions. Effect
of non linear slip (Thompson and Troian slip) on non Newtonian nanofluid (Carreau nanofluid) subject to microrotation is the novelty of the investigation. Shooting technique is the instrumental to get appropriate numerical solution. The significant outcomes of the current study are that Casson
parameter and Weissenberg number exhibit opposite results for velocity and heat transfer rate due to flow of micropolar Carreau nanofluid. Further, more and more Thompson and Troian slip yields diminution of flow velocity as well as microrotations. Amplifying Casson parameter intensifies the
HTR from the stretched surface.

Abstract
Application of the nanoparticles with different non-Newtonian base fluid has huge application in the industries where the heat generation or energy transform takes place and many such applications are designing the advanced energy system at high temperature, aerodynamics, energy extraction
etc. In the present study, we have analyzed irreversibility for a 3-dimensional MHD, incompressible, electrically conducting Casson nanofluid flow through the two horizontal stretching surfaces. To make it more practical and broad, the flow field has been incorporated with porosity, suction/injection,
non-linear radiation with fall velocity with convective heating conditions at the boundaries and entropy generation which is an important physical phenomenon in thermodynamics. Influence of imperative parameters of the flow field and physical parameters have discussed with the entropy generation.
In a limiting case, a comparison made. It is observed that the suction phenomena boost up the local Nusselt and Sherwood number at the surface while restricted the skin friction. The non-Newtonian rheology (as Casson number) restricted the skin friction and the same phenomena observed for
the local heat and mass transfer. The entropy boosts up with the enhancement of the magnetic parameter, temperature ratio and Brinkman number. Further nanoparticle concentration improve the thermal conductivity leads an improvement in the efficiency of the heat transfer takes place. With the
augment in thermal radiation, magnetic parameter and Brinkman number, the entropy generation of the systems gets accelerated.

Odderon Exchange from Elastic Scattering Differences between pp and pp[over ¯] Data at 1.96 TeV and from pp Forward Scattering Measurements. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:062003. Abstract
We describe an analysis comparing the pp[over ¯] elastic cross section as measured by the D0 Collaboration at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV to that in pp collisions as measured by the TOTEM Collaboration at 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV using a model-independent approach. The TOTEM cross sections, extrapolated to a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV, are compared with the D0 measurement in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the pp cross section. The two data sets disagree at the 3.4σ level and thus provide evidence for the t-channel exchange of a colorless, C-odd gluonic compound, also known as the odderon. We combine these results with a TOTEM analysis of the same C-odd exchange based on the total cross section and the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward elastic strong interaction scattering amplitude in pp scattering for which the significance is between 3.4σ and 4.6σ. The combined significance is larger than 5σ and is interpreted as the first observation of the exchange of a colorless, C-odd gluonic compound.

Abstract
Head and neck surgeons must have a thorough knowledge of head and neck vascular anatomy and its variations. This case report documents a variation in the superior thyroid artery encountered during a neck dissection and discusses the surrounding literature. A 55-year-old female with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue underwent a partial glossectomy, right level I-IV neck dissection and reconstruction with a radial forearm free flap. During the procedure, an arterial branch was encountered arising 2-3cm caudal to the common carotid bifurcation. This variant branch was shown to represent the superior thyroid artery. On review of the literature, various classification systems of the superior thyroid artery origin have been described. Awareness of such anatomical variation is vital for the head and neck surgeon to avoid unexpected complication.

Abstract
Three robust QTL for dry bean cooking time shortened cooking time 11-26 min and co-localized with QTL for increased cooked seed protein concentration. Cooking time is a major factor associated with consumer preference of dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The genetic control of cooking time was investigated with a quantitative trait loci (QTL) study on a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population developed from TZ-27 (slow cooking) and TZ-37 (fast cooking). The RIL population of 146 lines was grown on research farms over 2 years in Arusha and Morogoro, Tanzania. Arusha is an important mid-altitude bean-growing region, with moderate temperatures and reliable rainfall, whereas the low altitude and high temperatures in Morogoro make it unfavorable for bean production. The population exhibited large variation for cooking time with a range of 22-98 min. On average, beans grown in Arusha cooked 15 min faster than those grown in Morogoro. A linkage map developed with 1951 SNP markers was used for QTL analysis. Ten QTL were identified for cooking time, three of which were found in multiple environments. RILs with all three QTL (CT3.1, CT6.1, and CT11.2) cooked on average 11 min faster in Arusha and 26 min faster in Morogoro than RILs with none. Seed attributes were related to cooking time such that seeds with greater seed mass and less seed coat percentage cooked faster. Cooked seed protein concentration ranged from 17.8 to 30.8% across the years and locations. All three of the most robust cooking time QTL co-localized with QTL for protein concentration, and TZ-37 always contributed faster cooking time and increased protein concentration.

A recurrent case of pituicytoma 16 years later. Ann R Coll Surg Engl 2020; 102:e87-e88. Abstract
BACKGROUND Pituicytoma is a rare; slow-growing primary tumour originating from the glial cells of the neurohypophysis. It was classed as a low-grade (grade I) central nervous system tumour by the World Health Organization in 2007. We present the case of a 71-year-old man with a previous history of sellar meningioma who underwent surgical resection of pituicytoma by transphenoidal hypophysectomy. METHOD We conducted a literature search using Medline EMBASE and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews using the Ovid search engines. Key words searched were 'pituitary gland', 'pituicytoma', 'neurohypophysis'. Patient records and imaging were obtained from the Royal Stoke University Hospital database. RESULTS A 71-year-old man with a background of sellar meningioma 16 years previously was found to have a pituitary fossa tumour on surveillance magnetic resonance imaging. Differential diagnosis was pituitary adenoma. Endoscopic transphenoidal hypophysectomy was performed. Histology was consistent with pituicytoma. As a result of this histology from his initial tumour was re-examined and was amended to pituicytoma, indicating a recurrence. CONCLUSION Pituicytoma is a benign, slow growing lesion of the posterior pituitary. Brat et al diagnosed it as a distinct entity in 2000 and it was listed as a World Health Organization classification grade I tumour in 2007. It can be mistaken for pituitary adenoma owing to its similar clinical presentation. Complete excision of the tumour by transphenoidal hypophysectomy is an effective management for pituicytoma as demonstrated in this case.

Abstract
The scattering of dark matter (DM) particles with sub-GeV masses off nuclei is difficult to detect using liquid xenon-based DM search instruments because the energy transfer during nuclear recoils is smaller than the typical detector threshold. However, the tree-level DM-nucleus scattering diagram can be accompanied by simultaneous emission of a bremsstrahlung photon or a so-called "Migdal" electron. These provide an electron recoil component to the experimental signature at higher energies than the corresponding nuclear recoil. The presence of this signature allows liquid xenon detectors to use both the scintillation and the ionization signals in the analysis where the nuclear recoil signal would not be otherwise visible. We report constraints on spin-independent DM-nucleon scattering for DM particles with masses of 0.4-5 GeV/c^{2} using 1.4×10^{4} kg day of search exposure from the 2013 data from the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment for four different classes of mediators. This analysis extends the reach of liquid xenon-based DM search instruments to lower DM masses than has been achieved previously.

Abstract
Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are associated with poor health outcomes in older people. Relationships between muscle and bone have typically been reported at a functional or macroscopic level. The aims of this study were to describe the relationships between muscle morphology and bone health among participants of the Hertfordshire Sarcopenia Study (HSS). 105 older men, mean age 72.5 (SD 2.5) years, were recruited into the HSS. Whole body lean mass as well as appendicular lean mass, lumbar spine and femoral neck bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) were obtained through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning. Percutaneous biopsy of the vastus lateralis was performed successfully in 99 participants. Image analysis was used to determine the muscle morphology variables of slow-twitch (type I) and fast-twitch (type II) myofibre area, myofibre density, capillary and satellite cell (SC) density. There were strong relationships between whole and appendicular lean body mass in relation to femoral neck BMC and BMD (r ≥ 0.43, p < 0.001). Type II fibre area was associated with both femoral neck BMC (r = 0.27, p = 0.01) and BMD (r = 0.26, p = 0.01) with relationships robust to adjustment for age and height. In unadjusted analysis, SC density was associated with whole body area (r = 0.30, p = 0.011) and both BMC (r = 0.26, p = 0.031) and area (r = 0.29, p = 0.017) of the femoral neck. We have demonstrated associations between BMC and changes in muscle at a cellular level predominantly involving type II myofibres. Interventions targeted at improving muscle mass, function and quality may improve overall musculoskeletal health. Larger studies that include women are needed to explore these relationships further.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the effective weak mixing angle parameter sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ} in pp[over ¯]→Z/γ^{*}→μ^{+}μ^{-} events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and corresponding to 8.6 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The measured value of sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ}[μμ]=0.23016±0.00064 is further combined with the result from the D0 measurement in pp[over ¯]→Z/γ^{*}→e^{+}e^{-} events, resulting in sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ}[comb]=0.23095±0.00040. This combined result is the most precise measurement from a single experiment at a hadron collider and is the most precise determination using the coupling of the Z/γ^{*} to light quarks.

Plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) concentrations in ponies measured by two different assays suggests seasonal cross-reactivity or interference. Equine Vet J 2018; 50:672-677. Abstract
BACKGROUND Analysis of plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone concentration [ACTH] aids diagnosis of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). Comparisons of the validated chemiluminescent-immunoassay (CI) and immunofluorescent (IF) assays are limited. OBJECTIVES To compare the results of [ACTH] analysis by CI and IF methods of samples collected in autumn and spring and assess cross-reactivity. STUDY DESIGN Method comparison. METHODS Plasma from nonlaminitic ponies was analysed concurrently using the IF and CI methods in autumn and the following spring. Diagnostic thresholds for the IF method were derived using ROC curves and Youden indices to correspond with CI thresholds. Assay specificity was assessed using commercially available ACTH fragments and degradation products of endogenous ACTH. RESULTS CI and IF methods yielded different results (P<0.001); mean differences (CI-IF), (95% confidence intervals): Autumn (n=99) 38.6 (30.6-46.5) pg/ml, Spring (n=88) 5.1 (3.9-6.3) pg/ml. The association between CI and IF results differed in autumn and spring, consistent with seasonally dependent cross-reactivity or interference. Good (κ=0.66-0.74) agreement was obtained for binary interpretation in spring between IF and CI using thresholds of >24 and >29 pg/ml respectively and in autumn between IF and CI using thresholds of >27 and >47 pg/ml respectively or >33 and >77 pg/ml respectively. Of 88 ponies with both spring and autumn samples, 56 (64%) exceeded a published autumn CI threshold (>47 pg/ml), of which 39 (70%) were below the equivalent threshold (<29 pg/ml) the following spring without treatment. The CI assay showed apparent increases in [ACTH] following addition of CLIP (ACTH 18-39). Degradation of ACTH during storage affected the assays differently. MAIN LIMITATIONS Limited numbers of PPID cases were included. Immunoreactivity of commercially available peptides may differ from their endogenous equivalents. CONCLUSIONS The methods yielded different absolute values but the agreement for binary classification was good. An altered pituitary secretome in autumn that affects apparent [ACTH] values is likely. Combined Forward-Backward Asymmetry Measurements in Top-Antitop Quark Production at the Tevatron. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 120:042001. Abstract
The CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron have measured the asymmetry between yields of forward- and backward-produced top and antitop quarks based on their rapidity difference and the asymmetry between their decay leptons. These measurements use the full data sets collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. We report the results of combinations of the inclusive asymmetries and their differential dependencies on relevant kinematic quantities. The combined inclusive asymmetry is A_{FB}^{tt[over ¯]}=0.128±0.025. The combined inclusive and differential asymmetries are consistent with recent standard model predictions.

A comparison of functional outcome between amputation and extension prosthesis in the treatment of congenital absence of the fibula with severe limb deformity. J Child Orthop 2017; 11:318-325. Abstract
PURPOSE Complete fibula absence often presents with significant lower-limb deformity. Parental counselling regarding management is paramount in achieving the optimum functional outcome. Amputation offers a single surgical event with minimal complications. This study compares outcomes with an amputation protocol to those using an extension prosthesis. METHOD Thirty-two patients were identified. Nine patients (2 males, 7 females; median age at assessment of 23.5 years) used an extension prosthesis. Twenty-three patients (16 males, 7 females; median age at assessment of eight years) underwent 25 amputations during childhood. Mobility was assessed using SIGAM and K scores. Quality of life was assessed using the PedsQL inventory questionnaire; pain by a verbal severity score. RESULTS The 19 Syme and one Boyd amputation in 19 patients were performed early (mean age 15 months). Four Syme and one trans-tibial amputation in four patients took place in older children (mean age 6.6 years). Only two underwent tibial kyphus correction to aid prosthetic fitting. K scores were significantly higher (mean 4 vs 2) and pain scores lower in the amputation group allowing high impact activity compared with community ambulation with an extension prosthesis. The SIGAM and PedsQL scores were all better in the amputation group, but not significantly so. CONCLUSION Childhood amputation for severe limb length inequality and foot deformity in congenital fibula absence offers excellent short-term functional outcome with prosthetic support. The tibial kyphus does not need routine correction and facilitates prosthetic suspension. Accommodative extension prostheses offer reasonable long-term function but outcome scores are lower.

First Searches for Axions and Axionlike Particles with the LUX Experiment. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 118:261301. Abstract
The first searches for axions and axionlike particles with the Large Underground Xenon experiment are presented. Under the assumption of an axioelectric interaction in xenon, the coupling constant between axions and electrons g_{Ae} is tested using data collected in 2013 with an exposure totaling 95 live days ×118 kg. A double-sided, profile likelihood ratio statistic test excludes g_{Ae} larger than 3.5×10^{-12} (90% C.L.) for solar axions. Assuming the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky theoretical description, the upper limit in coupling corresponds to an upper limit on axion mass of 0.12 eV/c^{2}, while for the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zhakharov description masses above 36.6 eV/c^{2} are excluded. For galactic axionlike particles, values of g_{Ae} larger than 4.2×10^{-13} are excluded for particle masses in the range 1-16 keV/c^{2}. These are the most stringent constraints to date for these interactions.

Limits on Spin-Dependent WIMP-Nucleon Cross Section Obtained from the Complete LUX Exposure. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 118:251302. Abstract
We present experimental constraints on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon elastic cross sections from the total 129.5 kg yr exposure acquired by the Large Underground Xenon experiment (LUX), operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota (USA). A profile likelihood ratio analysis allows 90% C.L. upper limits to be set on the WIMP-neutron (WIMP-proton) cross section of σ_{n}=1.6×10^{-41} cm^{2} (σ_{p}=5×10^{-40} cm^{2}) at 35 GeV c^{-2}, almost a sixfold improvement over the previous LUX spin-dependent results. The spin-dependent WIMP-neutron limit is the most sensitive constraint to date.
