Effect of titanium dioxide nanocoating on the colour stability of room temperature vulcanizing maxillofacial silicone-an invitro study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of an oxide nanocoating to prevent colour degradation of maxillofacial silicone elastomers following accelerated ageing.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Specimens (N = 40) of specified dimensions were fabricated in Factor II room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone and processed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Two groups were classified with 20 specimens each. Specimens in the first group were coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) by atomic layer deposition technology. The colour stability test was conducted with a UV-VIS spectrometer (Schimadzu) for both titanium dioxide nanocoated and uncoated specimen groups after subjecting them to accelerated ageing. It was analysed using the CIE L*a*b method.

RESULTS

The average colour change was highest for uncoated specimens (2.868), and the average colour change for titanium dioxide-coated specimens was significantly low (1.774). The average colour change of uncoated specimens (2.868) was close to the acceptable threshold value (3), and that of coated specimens (1.774) was far below the acceptable threshold (3).

CONCLUSIONS

The colour change that occurred in titanium dioxide nanocoated specimens following accelerated ageing was significantly lower than that in the uncoated group, showing that the TiO2 nanocoating was effective in reducing the colour degradation of silicone elastomers.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Maxillofacial prostheses fabricated from silicone elastomers go through undesirable colour degradation over time. The development of a scientific technique that retards the colour deterioration of silicone prostheses would be of great clinical significance.

Double-Silicate Derived Hybrid Foams for High-Capacity Adsorption of Textile Dye Effluent: Statistical Optimization and Adsorption Studies

In this work, a lightweight inorganic-organic hybrid foam adsorbent is processed out of economically cheap "double-silicate" precursors employing natural bentonite and water glass through a facile cross-linking and polymerization technique. Poly(vinyl alcohol) was used to provide structural strength to the three-dimensional framework. The foam adsorbent possessed an apparent density of 0.083 g cm^-3, indicating its internetworks and exposed surface area for the uptake of dyes. The foam was systematically studied for the treatment of textile dye effluent. Multivariate optimization process was carried out using response surface methodology. The Box-Behnken model was used for the design of experiments and to study the interplay between the variables. Batch adsorption and continuous column adsorption studies were carried out at respective levels of initial concentration (200-1000 μM), adsorbent dose (1-10 g L^-1), and contact time (0-120 min). The results revealed that the hybrid silicate foam exhibits adsorption capacity as high as 99.9, 98.9, and 98.2% for 200, 600, and 1000 μM concentrations of methylene blue in 120 min, respectively, and 100% adsorption for 200, 600, and 1000 μM concentrations of crystal violet in 120 min for 10 g L^-1 of adsorbent. Adsorption equilibrium data fitted well to Langmuir isotherm, and the kinetics followed second-order kinetic model. Synthetic industrial effluent with 1000 μM dye concentration was also prepared and studied with continuous column for determining the working capacity of the adsorbent, and the results are presented. The silicate hybrid foam is a cheap adsorbent that does not produce any secondary waste and can be repeatedly used making it attractive for dye industries.

Multiwall carbon nanotube reinforced teflon fibrils for oil spill clean up and its effective recycling as textile dye sorbent

Surface functionalized multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced teflon fibrils (MWCNT@Teflon) were successfully tested as an - oil - absorbent that can be used as a potential oil recovery material at the time of oil spill accidents in water. We found that oleic acid functionalization of MWCNTs was important for their adhesion onto teflon fibrils and at the same time prevented the MWCNT leaching into oil/water interface. The fibrils had displayed superior mechanical and thermal stability and provided a new insight to oil spill clean-up applications with easy recovery of absorbed oil by simple squeezing. Recycling of exhausted MWCNT@Teflon fibrils after oil recovery applications was conducted by pyrolysis under inert atmosphere in presence of magnetic clay. The magnetic clay absorbed the pyrolysis products, resulting in a heterostructured magnetic clay carbon composite (MCC) which was found super paramagnetic and chemically stable in all pH. The MCC was found capable of adsorbing textile dye from water ultra-fast with in a maximum contact time of 2 min and magnetically separable after adsorption experiments.

A hybridization approach to efficient TiO2 photodegradation of aqueous benzalkonium chloride

TiO2 get positively charged upon UV-irradiation and repel the cationic pollutants away from the surface. Hybridization of AC onto TiO2 (ACT) tends catalyst surface negatively charged besides providing highly favorable adsorptions sites for cationic pollutants. The photodegradation of benzalkonium chloride (BKC), a quaternary ammonium surfactant and a pharmaceutical, is investigated with ACT. The surface charge of the catalyst in surfactant and non-surfactant aqueous dispersion under UV-irradiation is investigated and explained. The anomalous increase in COD values at the beginning of BKC-photodegradation is explained. The intermediate products formed are identified in both solution and solid phase. Trace amount of dodecane remained adsorbed on the catalyst surface after 1h UV-irradiation, but complete mineralization of BKC is achieved with 2h UV-irradiation. We propose that BKC photodegradation starts by central fission of benzyl CN bond followed by dealkylation, and demethylation steps.

MAX phase ternary carbide derived 2-D ceramic nanostructures [CDCN] as chemically interactive functional fillers for damage tolerant epoxy polymer nanocomposites

A 2-D ceramic nanostructure was successfully processed out of nanolamellar 312 MAX phase ternary carbide and titanium silicon carbide via a simple shear-induced delamination method and was incorporated in an epoxy matrix, so as to improve the bulk properties of the polymer.

Catalytically engineered reduced graphene oxide/ZnO hybrid nanocomposites for the adsorption, photoactivity and selective oil pick-up from aqueous media

Microwave mediated in situ growth of nanocrystalline ZnO on rGO nanosheets is achieved using APTMS as the crosslinking agent. The deposition of hydrophobic ZnO/Si@rGO on a simple cotton textile results in the selective adsorption of oil from aqueous media.

Shear induced micromechanical synthesis of Ti3SiC2 MAXene nanosheets for functional applications

Ultrathin Ti₃SiC₂ MAXene nanosheets were synthesized by shear induced micromechanical technique. This new class of 2D functional material is an ideal candidate for energy and electronic applications.

Studies on the evolution of ZnO morphologies in a thermohydrolysis technique and evaluation of their functional properties

The transformation of ZnO morphologies in an in situ thermohydrolysis technique using hexamethylene tetramine is studied with and without surfactants. The photocatalytic and photoluminescence properties of these morphologically tuned ZnO morphologies are studied and the results presented. In the absence of any surfactants, the HMTA assisted in situ hydrolysis resulted in microtube and multipod morphologies. The addition of nonionic [Span-80] and cationic [CTAB] surfactants transforms the morphologies to microspheres, microdiscs and nanorods. The photoluminescence analysis shows a red luminescence in nanorods and green-indigo and blue-green emissions in microtubes and other morphologies. Photocatalytic reaction efficiency in UV light follows the order microtubes>nanorods>microdiscs>microspheres>multipods.
