Employment-related Education and Support for Cancer Survivors: a Content Analysis of Employment Resources Offered on National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center Websites

High rates of employment changes and associated concerns among cancer survivors following diagnosis and treatment suggest a need to examine what employment-related educational resources and support are currently being offered to cancer survivors and what gaps exist in those resources. In 2023, we conducted a content analysis of employment resources described on the websites of the NCI-Designated Cancer Centers that provide clinical care (N = 64) through a systematic review procedure using predetermined search terms and a standardized process to examine the availability and accessibility of such resources. Descriptive analyses were conducted to characterize the employment resources identified. In total, 175 employment resources were identified across 49 cancer center websites; 102 (58%) provided patient-facing education/information, 58 (33%) offered a consultation, 14 (8%) offered support groups/classes, and 1 (1%) was classified as "Other." Most (76%) resources were provided internally by the cancer center, and often, more than one discipline was involved, most commonly social work and medicine. These findings are encouraging as they suggest that most (77%) NCI-Designated Cancer Centers recognize employment support as a component of survivorship care. The multidisciplinary nature of the resources identified is supported by moderate evidence that multidisciplinary interventions appear to have the greatest potential to foster a return to work for cancer survivors and align with suggestions made by recent expert groups and guidelines regarding employment support for cancer survivors. Ongoing work is needed to assess the utilization, impact, and equity of available employment resources to optimize work outcomes among cancer survivors.

Cancer-related fatigue is associated with objective measures of physical function before and after a clinical exercise program: A retrospective analysis

Background:

Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common symptom reported by survivors of cancer. CRF is associated with reduced self-reported physical function, but associations with objective measures of physical function are less robust. Exercise programs have been shown to improve both CRF and objective physical function, but the interaction of exercise, CRF, and function has not been explored.

Methods:

Retrospective data were collected from baseline (n = 420) and final assessments (n = 234) of survivors who participated in a 3-month clinical exercise program. Assessments included measures of CRF (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy–Fatigue) and physical function (6-minute walk test, usual and fast gait speed, 30-second sit-to-stand test, and the Timed Up and Go test). Multiple regression analyses investigated associations between CRF and physical function before and after the program. CRF and functional changes following the program were calculated and associations investigated with multiple regressions.

Results:

All measures of CRF and physical function significantly improved following the program (P < .01). CRF was associated with all functional measures at baseline (standardized β = −0.18 to 0.29, P < .01) and final assessments (r = −0.27 to 0.26, P < .01). Changes in CRF were associated with changes in function (standardized β = −0.12 to 0.23, P < .05), except usual gait speed (P = .17).

Conclusion:

This investigation demonstrated associations between CRF and objective physical function before and after participation in an exercise program. The 3-way interaction between CRF, physical function, and exercise can be used clinically to personalize rehabilitation strategies. Future studies should investigate changes in CRF and function during an exercise program.

Enhancing Efficiency and Reach Using Facebook to Recruit Breast Cancer Survivors for a Telephone-Based Supportive Care Randomized Trial During the COVID-19 Pandemic

PURPOSE

Evidence supporting social media-based recruitment of cancer survivors is limited. This paper describes how we used Facebook during the COVID-19 pandemic to augment our recruitment of breast cancer survivors for our two-site telephone-based randomized clinical trial (RCT) at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

METHODS

Originally a two-site RCT of a telephone-delivered breast cancer survivorship intervention, we extended our clinic-based recruitment to Facebook. Participant characteristics, geographic reach, and baseline outcomes were compared across recruitment sources (ie, two clinics and Facebook) using descriptive statistics and effect sizes.

RESULTS

Enrollment rates (20%-29%) were comparable across recruitment sources. The 21-month Facebook marketing campaign accounted for 59% (n = 179/303) of our total sample and had the greatest geographic reach, recruiting women from 24 states. The Facebook campaign reached a total of 51,787 unique individuals and cost $88.44 in US dollars (USD) per enrolled participant. Clinic samples had a greater proportion of women who were widowed (8% v 1%; P = .03) and Facebook had a higher proportion of women with a household income over $40,000 USD (83% v 71%; P = .02). There were no statistically significant differences between Facebook and the two clinics on baseline survey scores.

CONCLUSION

Augmenting traditional recruitment with Facebook increased our RCT's geographic and sociodemographic reach and supported meeting recruitment goals in a timely way. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, cancer survivorship researchers should consider using social media as a recruitment strategy while weighing the advantages and potential biases introduced through such strategies.

Reporting Rigor of Cancer Rehabilitation Interventions: Application of the CReDECI-2 Guidelines

ABSTRACT

Clear reporting of cancer rehabilitation interventions is critical for interpreting and translating research into clinical practice. This study sought to examine the completeness of intervention reporting of cancer rehabilitation interventions addressing disability and to identify which elements are most frequently missing. This was a secondary analysis of randomized controlled trials included in two systematic reviews examining effectiveness of cancer rehabilitation interventions that address cancer-related disability, including functional outcomes. Eligible trials were reviewed for intervention reporting rigor using the Criteria for Reporting the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions in Healthcare 2 checklist. Intervention descriptions for cancer rehabilitation interventions were generally incomplete. Approximately 85% ( n = 157) of trials described ≤50% of Criteria for Reporting the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions in Healthcare 2 checklist items. Commonly underreported items included description of the intervention's underlying theoretical basis, fidelity, description of process evaluation or external conditions influencing intervention delivery, and costs or required resources for intervention delivery. The findings reveal that cancer rehabilitation intervention descriptions lacked necessary detail in this body of literature. Poor descriptions limit the translation of research to clinical practice. To ensure higher-quality study design and reporting, future intervention research should incorporate an intervention reporting checklist to ensure more complete descriptions for research and practice.

A Process Evaluation of Intervention Delivery for a Cancer Survivorship Rehabilitation Clinical Trial Conducted during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The purpose of the present study was to conduct a process evaluation of intervention delivery for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic (NCT03915548). The RCT tested the effects of a telephone-delivered behavioral intervention on changes in breast cancer survivors' satisfaction with social roles and activities, as compared to an attention control condition. This process evaluation examined (a) fidelity monitoring scores; (b) participants' perceived benefit ratings for gaining confidence, reducing distress, adjusting habits and routines, setting goals, and increasing exercise; and (c) field notes, email communications, and transcripts of coach supervision and debriefing sessions. The behavioral and attention control conditions were delivered with a high degree of fidelity (global quality rating score for the BA/PS condition was M = 4.6 (SD = 0.6) and M = 4.9 (SD = 0.3) for the attention control condition, where "5" is the highest rating). The behavioral intervention participants perceived greater benefits than the control participants pertaining to goal setting, t(248) = 5.73, p = <0.0001, adjusting habits and routines, t(248) = 2.94, p = 0.0036, and increasing exercise, t(248) = 4.66, p = <0.0001. Moreover, coaches' perceptions regarding the behavioral intervention's therapeutic aspects aligned with the study's a priori conceptual model including the use of a structured process to set small, observable goals and facilitate the independent use of problem-solving skills. However, coaches also noted that aspects of the attention control condition, including the perceived relevance of the educational content and opportunities for social support, may have made it more therapeutically potent than intended. The pandemic may have affected the activity goals behavioral intervention participants could set as well as augmented the relevancy of social support provided in both conditions.

Fatigue as an Understudied Barrier to Participation in Life Roles

Fatigue is one of the most burdensome and disabling symptoms in numerous acute and chronic conditions and is associated with reduced participation in all aspects of daily life, for example, parenting, employment, and socialization. Historically, occupational practitioners played key roles in fatigue management by creating and implementing interventions. The American Occupational Therapy Foundation convened a Planning Grant Collective workshop with the goal to develop collaborative research ideas and proposals to advance the understanding and management of fatigue. Participants from occupational therapy and other disciplines, with expertise with fatigue or who were conducting research on fatigue, participated in a 3-day virtual workshop. Four main topics emerged: implementation science, treatment taxonomy, trial design and comparative effectiveness, and phenotyping. This white paper describes the proceedings, summarizes the discussions, and outlines recommendations from the PGC workshop on fatigue.

Finding the Optimal Exercise Dose While Living With Cancer-Related Fatigue: A Qualitative Study

PURPOSE

To gain insight into how survivors of breast cancer (SBCs) with cancer-related fatigue (CRF) self-monitor and manage exercise dose in the context of daily life, and how they identify an optimal exercise dose.

PARTICIPANTS & SETTING

11 SBCs with CRF who reported weekly exercise were recruited from a breast cancer center at a large urban hospital in the northeastern region of the United States.

METHODOLOGIC APPROACH

One-on-one semistructured interviews were conducted using a descriptive phenomenologic method. Inductive data analysis was performed within and across cases.

FINDINGS

The following themes emerged: examining the impact of exercise, finding an optimal dose, and remaining flexible to sustain exercise. Participants used trial and error to explore exercise dose, examining the effects of varying doses on daily life. These effects had behavioral implications and resulted in a nonlinear process and the perception that an optimal exercise dose is dynamic within the context of daily life.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING

Strategies to support SBCs with CRF to efficiently achieve optimal exercise doses with fewer setbacks may improve individuals' ability to self-manage and mitigate CRF. This study's findings provide practical approaches for nurses to encourage the initiation and adoption of exercise behaviors after treatment for breast cancer.

The Role of Exercise Self-Efficacy in Exercise Participation Among Women With Persistent Fatigue After Breast Cancer: A Mixed-Methods Study

OBJECTIVE

Survivors of breast cancer with persistent cancer-related fatigue (CRF) report less exercise participation compared with survivors of breast cancer without CRF. Although CRF predicts other domains of self-efficacy among survivors, the effect of CRF on exercise self-efficacy (ESE)-an important predictor of exercise participation-has not been quantified. This study examined the relationship between CRF, ESE, and exercise participation and explored the lived experience of engaging in exercise among survivors of breast cancer with persistent CRF.

METHODS

Fifty-eight survivors of breast cancer (3.7 [SD = 2.4] years after primary treatment) self-reported CRF, ESE, and exercise participation (hours of moderate-intensity exercise per week). Regression and mediation analyses were conducted. Survivors who reported clinically significant CRF and weekly exercise were purposively sampled for 1-on-1 interviews (N = 11). Thematic analysis was performed across participants and within higher versus lower ESE subsets.

RESULTS

Greater CRF predicted lower ESE (β = -0.32) and less exercise participation (β = -0.08). ESE mediated the relationship between CRF and exercise participation (β = -0.05, 95% CI = -0.09 to -0.02). Qualitative data showed that survivors of breast cancer with higher ESE perceived exercise as a strategy to manage fatigue, described self-motivation and commitment to exercise, and had multiple sources of support. In contrast, survivors with lower ESE described less initiative to manage fatigue through exercise, greater difficulty staying committed to exercise, and less support.

CONCLUSIONS

Survivors of breast cancer with persistent CRF may experience decreased ESE, which negatively influences exercise participation. Clinicians should screen for or discuss confidence as it relates to exercise and consider tailoring standardized exercise recommendations for this population to optimize ESE. This may facilitate more sustainable exercise participation and improve outcomes.

IMPACT

This study highlights the behavioral underpinnings of CRF as a barrier to exercise. Individualized exercise tailored to optimize ESE may facilitate sustainable exercise participation among survivors of breast cancer with CRF. Strategies for clinicians to address ESE are described and future research is suggested.

LAY SUMMARY

Women with fatigue after breast cancer treatment may have lower confidence about their ability to engage in exercise. Individually tailoring exercise to build confidence as it relates to exercise may result in more consistent exercise and better health-related outcomes.

Persistent cancer-related fatigue after breast cancer treatment predicts postural sway and post-exertional changes in sit-to-stand strategy

Background

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is considered a primary mechanism of imbalance among women diagnosed with breast cancer. Recent evidence, however, suggests that cancer-related fatigue (CRF) may also influence balance.

Purpose

Examine the contributions of CRF and CIPN to static and dynamic balance before and after a period of fatiguing exercise.

Methods

This is a secondary analysis of data examining functional differences between women with breast cancer with and without persistent CRF. Postural sway was measured during static standing and the rising phase of an instrumented sit-to-stand (ISTS) before and after exercise. Regression analyses were performed to determine how CRF and severity of CIPN predicted sway and how much variance was attributable to each.

Results

Greater CRF predicted increased pre-, p=.04, and post-exertional, p=.02, static sway in the anterior-posterior plane. CRF accounted for 10.5% and 9.5% of the variance in pre- and post-exertional sway (respectively) compared to the 0.9% and 1.4% accounted for by CIPN severity which was not a significant predictor. After exercise, greater CRF predicted smaller, more conservative, anterior weight shifting during the ISTS, p=.01, and accounted for 6.6% of the variance in sway compared to 3% attributed to CIPN which was not a significant predictor.

Limitations

This analysis is limited by its small and demographically homogenous sample.

Conclusions

These results suggest that CRF may influence balance independent of CIPN symptoms. While CIPN remains a risk factor for imbalance in this population, CRF warrants consideration in clinical practice and research as a mechanism of postural instability.

Pharmacological and Nonpharmacological Management of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Scoping Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and debilitating side effect of cancer treatment with no effective preventative strategy or definitive treatment. Purpose: To synthesize empiric literature from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of pharmacological and nonpharmacological management of CIPN. Data Sources: Articles published between January 1, 2010, and February 28, 2021, were identified using keywords searching Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase. Study Selection: RCTs that recruited individuals who were post-chemotherapy and experienced persistent CIPN symptoms. Data Extraction and Synthesis: Three independent reviewers screened a total of 2023 abstracts. After screening, full-text review, and quality appraisal, 22 articles were included in this review. Data related to study design, participant characteristics, interventions, controls, outcome measures, and relevant findings were extracted from full texts. Descriptive quantitative summaries were calculated and narrative analysis was performed. Results: Of the 22 studies, 4 investigated pharmacologic treatments, 2 compared acupuncture to pharmacologic treatments, and 16 studies examined nonpharmacologic treatments. Pharmacologic studies reported mixed results with evidence of participant response varying by history of chemotherapeutic agent. Acupuncture, exercise/physical therapy, and neurofeedback appear to be effective treatments for CIPN. Evidence regarding biophysical agents and cognitive-behavioral therapy is equivocal. Scrambler therapy is not supported. Limitations: Studies included in this review share several limitations, including widely variable outcome measures, small and demographically homogenous samples, and nonstandardized treatment protocols. Conclusion: This scoping review summarized the current body of high-quality RCTs investigating treatment for CIPN. The majority of studies in this review reports benefits of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions, although management may require a multipronged approach and should be tailored to the individual. Clinical implications are proposed and suggestions made for future research include implementation of standardized intervention protocols, use of outcome measures representative of the spectrum of CIPN symptoms, and stratification by the chemotherapeutic agent.

[Accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy in locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinomas]

BACKGROUND

The excellent results yielded by hyperfractionated and accelerated radiotherapy associated with concurrent chemotherapy in locally advanced oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinomas led to investigation of this therapeutic regimen in nasopharyngeal carcinomas also.

METHODS

Thirty-five patients with stage III and IV nasopharyngeal carcinomas received accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy (5-FU, mitomycin C + leucovorin). In the first 3 weeks of treatment five 2-Gy doses per week were delivered to the primary tumour and regional lymph nodes. The fractionation was then accelerated, with 1.4 Gy given twice daily until a total dose of 72 Gy had been administered.

RESULTS

The overall objective response rate was 100%. The median follow-up period was 71 months. Salvage surgery of the lymph nodes was performed in 10 patients, revealing vital tumour tissue in 6 of these. The actuarial 5-year local control rate was 64% (95%CI: 47-81%), while overall actuarial survival at 5 years was 70% (95%CI: 53-86%).

CONCLUSION

Hyperfractionated accelerated radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy is effective and feasible in locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

[Utilization of a new night vision enhancement device (DAVIS)]

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Following complete ophthalmologic examination 37 patients with night blindness due to Retinitis Pigmentosa (sometimes Usher-Syndrome) and Choroideremia (n = 3) performed several tests with DAVIS during darkness. We evaluated the improvement of visual function on a special outside course in the city of Heidelberg (duration 1.5 to 4 hours).

RESULTS

Twenty six of the patients were able to better recognize obstacles, 28 could see objects which were not seen without DAVIS. Twenty two of the 37 patients would use the DAVIS. Patients needed a visual acuity of more than 0.1 and more than 6 degree of central visual field to experience improvement with DAVIS. However, in patients with only minimal changes of the visual field, the restriction due to the presence of the device was a drawback. Sudden occurrence of light sources leads to blinding and limits the indoor use.

CONCLUSION

DAVIS enhances contrast acuity especially during night and twilight. This leads to improvement of orientation due to better recognition of obstacles and allows rehabilitation of patients with night blindness for outdoor mobility. Individual test and adjustment of DAVIS is necessary to allow exact and adequate prescription.

Efficacy of hand washing procedures on bacterial contamination of hydrogel contact lenses

The effect of various hand washing regimens on transfer of bacterial contaminants from the hands to a hydrogel contact lenses was evaluated. Each of 47 subjects performed 5 different hand washing procedures, and then handled a new, sterile hydrogel contact lens. The lenses were cultured to determine colony-forming units (CFUs) and microbial identity. Median CFUs on lenses handled after washing with water, soap and water, or soap and water followed by towel drying were higher than the median CFU for lenses handled after no hand washing. The median CFU for lenses handled after soap and water washing followed by an alcohol wipe was not different from the no washing group. The majority of the contaminants were identified as Staphylococcus epidermidis. These results show that ordinary hand washing alone does not decrease, and may even increase, the amount of contaminants transferred from the hands to a hydrogel lens. Use of an alcoholic wipe after hand washing reverses this effect. Hand washing is still recommended in contact lens hygiene for removal of more pathogenic contaminants.

The high-affinity sulfonylurea receptor: distribution, glycosylation, purification, and immunoprecipitation of two forms from endocrine and neuroendocrine cell lines

The high-affinity sulfonylurea receptor, a novel member of the ATP-binding cassette superfamily, is one component of the ATP-sensitive K+ channel. The protein is critical for regulation of insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells, and mutations in the receptor have been linked to familial hyperinsulinemia, a disorder characterized by unregulated insulin release despite severe hypoglycemia. The sulfonylurea receptor is present in membranes from a number of endocrine and neuroendocrine cell lines, including HIT-T15, RINm5f, alpha TC-6, AtT-20, and GH3 cells. Two forms of the receptor are present in RINm5f and alpha TC-6 cells, with apparent SDS gel molecular masses of 140 and 150 kDa. The two forms have equally high affinity, KD approximately 3 nM, for an iodinated derivative of glyburide, an anti-diabetic sulfonylurea. The receptor is a glycoprotein; treatment of RINm5f or alpha TC-6 cells with tunicamycin reduces the 140 and 150 kDa species to a single approximately 137 kDa protein. The 140 and 150 kDa receptors bind differentially to concanavalin A and wheat germ agglutinin, and lectin-affinity chromatography is ideal for the initial stages of receptor purification. After lectin-affinity chromatography, the same methods can be applied for purifying the 150 kDa form as for the 140 kDa receptor. A transiently expressed receptor with a histidine-tagged carboxy-terminus was purified by Ni-agarose chromatography, and this variant was used to demonstrate that the 140 kDa polypeptide is full length. Anti-peptide antibodies directed against the amino-terminus of the receptor and antibodies against the nucleotide binding folds immunoprecipitate both receptor forms. The results indicate the 140 and 150 kDa receptors are differentially glycosylated forms of the same polypeptide chain.

Presbyopic drivers' vision through a convex rear view mirror

BACKGROUND

Monovision is a commonly used modality for the presbyope who wants to wear contact lenses. If the add for near vision is in the left eye, driving an automobile creates a circumstance whereby the lens wearer cannot obtain a clear image in that eye of distant objects seen in the driver's side outside rear view mirror.

METHODS

We have discovered that a stick-on convex mirror eliminates this problem by neutralizing either some or all of the power of the add.

RESULTS

The driver wearing an add in the left eye can then obtain a clear image in that eye of objects behind and to the side of the automobile.

Disposable hydrogel contact lenses for extended wear

Nine ophthalmologists and nine optometrists conducted a premarket study of the Acuvue disposable contact lens manufactured by Vistakon, Inc. Of the 812 patients offered the lens, 733 accepted it and were enrolled in the study. These patients were fitted with the lens and followed for a period of 8 months. Over 98% of these patients had 20/25 or better vision on initial fitting; and subjective ratings of lens comfort were very good. Only 3.7% (27 of 733) discontinued wearing their lenses during the study period. Thirty-four patients (5.6%) experienced a problem while wearing their contact lenses.

The Urist Rorschach Mutuality of Autonomy Scale as an indicator of psychopathology

The Urist Rorschach Mutuality of Autonomy Scale (MAS), which assesses development along a self-object differentiation and mutuality dimension, has shown considerable promise as an index of interpersonal relationship capacities. As such, MAS scores were predicted to correlate significantly with three measures of psychological pathology/health. The reliability of the scale was investigated with non-S Rorschachs and found to be satisfactory. Four-card Rorschachs from 60 previously hospitalized adults comprised the data source for the hypothesis test. Results suggest that the Mutuality Scale accurately reflects observed pathology severity at time of hospitalization and over a lifetime, but not at the time of assessment. Hence, the Urist MAS may indicate potential for pathology.

Disinfection of hydrophilic lenses

The cleaning and disinfection of hydrogel lenses has been discussed in the optometric literature by a number of authors. Although significant differences exist among authors regarding the disinfection method of choice, there is reasonable agreement that lenses that are carefully cleaned and rinsed are advantageous from the standpoint of both safety and lens longevity. Chemical disinfection with the soaking solution changed daily is a fail-safe method, while thermal disinfection may be less safe, perhaps due to ineffective lens case construction or thermal unit breakdown.

Further investigation of hydrogel lens power changes due to flexure

Measured values for ametropia-correcting powers and front surface radii of lenses on the eye are compared to values which would be expected, using the Equal Change Hypothesis and the Invariant Normals-Constant Arc Hypothesis. Photographs of various lenses on the eye, with large molecule fluorescein instilled, are presented and show no noticeable tear lens of a finite power. These photographs and our data indicate that the Equal Change Hypothesis is not valid for predicting lens power changes due to flexure. In contrast, the Invariant Normals-Constant Arc Hypothesis appears to closely predict lens flexure effects. A clinical application of this study would be to note that thin minus hydrogels correct slightly more ametropia in their flexed state than in their unflexed state. Thin plus hydrogels correct slightly less ametropia in the flexed state than in the unflexed state.

Accuracy of manufacturers' stated center thickness of hydrogel contact lenses

The center thicknesses of 184 hydrogel lenses--Naturvue, Hydrocurve (thin hefilcon A), Soflens, Aquaflex, and AOsoft--were measured using the Radiuscope in combination with the hydrogel lens platform. The measured center thickness of each lens was compared with the manufacturer's stated center thickness for a lens of the same parameters. In all cases, the mean difference between the measured center thickness and stated center thickness exceeded 0.01 mm, which, based on previous study, was the expected variation in the technique. The mean difference between the measured center thickness and stated center thickness of the various manufactures' lenses ranged from 0.012--0.030 mm.

Residual astigmatism in hard and soft contact lens wearers

Residual astigmatism in a group of hard contact lens wearers and an equal size group of soft contact lens wearers was compared. Generally, the criteria used were to fit patients with refractive astigmatism greater than 0.75 D with hard lenses and those with refractive astigmatism of 0.25 D or less with soft ones. Those with refractive astigmatism between 0.25 D and 0.75 D were fitted with either modality depending upon other factors. The amount of residual astigmatism in the two groups proved to be nearly equal.

Reliability and repeatability study of a technique for measuring the center thickness of a hydrogel lens

Various techniques of measuring the center thickness of hydrogel contact lenses are discussed. A new device called the Bisurfaced Hydrogel Lens Platform (BHLP) is described which in combination with the radiuscope allows for easy measurement of the center thickness of hydrogel lenses. The results of reliability and repeatability studies of this new device are reported which suggest the ability to measure the center thickness of hydrogel lenses within a range of .01 mm.

Visual acuity in hard and soft contact lens wearers: a comparison

Visual acuity measurements with spectacles, with hard contact lenses and with hard contact lenses plus overrefraction were made on 75 eyes. Similar data was taken on 75 eyes wearing soft contact lenses. In each case, some eyes showed a decrease in visual acuity with contact lenses but the soft lenses wearers showed a greater percentage of eyes with visual acuity decrease.
