Abstract
The first double diffractive cross-section measurement in the very forward region has been carried out by the TOTEM experiment at the LHC with a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=7 TeV. By utilizing the very forward TOTEM tracking detectors T1 and T2, which extend up to |η|=6.5, a clean sample of double diffractive pp events was extracted. From these events, we determined the cross section σDD=(116±25) μb for events where both diffractive systems have 4.7<|η|min<6.5.

Luminosity-independent measurement of the proton-proton total cross section at √s=8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2013; 111:012001. Abstract
The TOTEM collaboration has measured the proton-proton total cross section at √s=8 TeV using a luminosity-independent method. In LHC fills with dedicated beam optics, the Roman pots have been inserted very close to the beam allowing the detection of ~90% of the nuclear elastic scattering events. Simultaneously the inelastic scattering rate has been measured by the T1 and T2 telescopes. By applying the optical theorem, the total proton-proton cross section of (101.7±2.9) mb has been determined, well in agreement with the extrapolation from lower energies. This method also allows one to derive the luminosity-independent elastic and inelastic cross sections: σ(el)=(27.1±1.4) mb; σ(inel)=(74.7±1.7) mb.

Abstract
Cerebral symptoms were registered in a multicenter study including 64 patients with severe hypertension, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) greater than or equal to 135 mmHg, and more or less pronounced hypertensive encephalopathy. The symptoms were: headache (70%), dizziness (35%), consciousness disturbances (28%), nausea (27%), paresis (23%), blurred vision (22%), paraesthesia (21%) and vomiting (14%). None had convulsions or coma. Initial treatment was furosemide i.v., and if DBP was greater than or equal to 125 mmHg after one hour, patients were randomized to treatment with either i.v. diazoxide (bolus injections of 75-150 mg) or i.m. dihydralazine (bolus injections of 6-12.5 mg). A gradual fall in blood pressure (BP) was obtained in all three groups. Along with BP reduction a substantial regression of neurological symptoms was registered. After 5 hours only minor cerebral symptoms were present without significant difference between diazoxide and dihydralazine. None developed cerebral complications. The study failed to show a significant correlation between BP reduction and regression of neurological symptoms graded semiquantitatively. Reduction of BP by titration using small repeated bolus injections is recommended, but oral treatment should be considered in the patients who are able to ingest peroral medication in spite of neurological symptoms.

Abstract
Emergency treatment of acute, severe hypertension defined as diastolic blood pressure (DBP) greater than or equal to 135 mmHg combined with cerebral symptoms was prospectively monitored in a randomized multicenter study including 64 patients. Treatment was divided into two periods. In the first hour the patients were observed in the supine position after being given 40 mg furosemide intravenously. If DBP remained greater than 125 mmHg (n = 52), the patients were put on fractionated diazoxide administered intravenously (n = 28) or dihydralazine administered intramuscularly (n = 24). Blood pressure (BP) decreased with diazoxide from an average of 241/149 mmHg to 180/111 mmHg after 5 hours and with dihydralazine from 237/149 to 161/101 mmHg. The inter-individual BP response varied considerably. A clear and identical regression in neurological symptoms was observed on both drug regimens. No new neurological symptoms were seen to develop. It is concluded that a gradual fall in BP can be obtained after fractionated dosage of diazoxide (i.v.) as well as after dihydralazine (i.m.). The indication of acute parenteral therapy compared to less aggressive oral treatment is discussed.

Abstract
Leukocyte adhesion is of pivotal functional importance. The adhesion involves several different adhesion molecules, the most important of which are the leukocyte beta 2-integrins (CD11/CD18), the intercellular adhesion molecules, and the selectins. We and others have extensively studied the specificity and binding sites in the integrins and the intercellular adhesion molecules for their receptors and ligands. The integrins have to become activated to exert their functions but the possible mechanisms of activation remain poorly understood. Importantly, a few novel intercellular adhesion molecules have been recently described, which seem to function only in specific tissues. Furthermore, it is becoming increasingly apparent that changes in integrins and intercellular adhesion molecules are associated with a number of acute and chronic diseases.

Abstract
Reduction of arterial compliance leads to a higher systolic (SBP) and a lower diastolic blood pressure (DBP). The increasing occurrence of reduced arterial compliance is responsible for the steep increase in SBP after the age of 50 years and also for the constancy and later decline in DBP. Reduced arterial compliance will blur the relationship between mean arterial pressure and DBP. This may change the relationships between cardiovascular events and DBP. The possibility of non-causal co-existence of reduced compliance and atherosclerosis is discussed. Such a co-existence would markedly influence the relationship between cardiovascular events and DBP. Finally, the influence that reduced compliance might have on the shape of the relation between cardiovascular episodes and diastolic and systolic blood pressure is discussed.

Abstract
As part of an epidemiological survey of 75-, 80- and 85-year-old citizens of Copenhagen, the blood pressure of 566 participants was measured at home visits. Based on WHO criteria, systolic hypertension was present in 66% of the men and 71% of the women, and diastolic hypertension was demonstrated in 18% of the men and 22% of the women. The systolic blood pressure was significantly higher among women than among men. Surprisingly, the mortality rate was highest among women with low systolic blood pressure. There was no correlation between blood pressure and morbidity, except among men with low systolic blood pressure, the majority of whom suffered from neoplasms. The women with the lowest systolic blood pressure displayed poor functional capacity in four--and the men in one--out of ten partial functions. No correlation could be demonstrated between blood pressure and intake of medicine. In fact, participants receiving antihypertensives had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures compared with the other participants.

Abstract
The blood pressure level and the renin-angiotensin system were investigated in 24 menopausal women (12 normotensive and 12 hypertensive) before, during and after six months of treatment with either oestradiol or trisekvens (sequential preparation containing oestradiol, oestriol and norethisterone acetate). In the normotensive women no significant alterations in systolic or diastolic blood pressure were found during treatment for six months. In the hypertensive women systolic blood pressure fell significantly during treatment with oestradiol as well as with trisekvens, while diastolic pressure did not change. All individual variations of blood pressure were small. The plasma concentrations of renin, angiotensin II and aldosterone remained unchanged during the treatments. A statistically significant increase in plasma renin substrate concentration was observed in all groups with the exception of the normotensive women treated with oestradiol. Menopausal symptoms in hypertensive women may safely be treated with natural oestrogens on the same indications as used for normotensive women.

Abstract
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR; 51Cr-EDTA clearance), serum creatinine concentration and urinary excretion of prostaglandins were measured in 8 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) before and after 2 weeks of treatment with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). ASA 65 mg/kg or up to 4 g/daily was given as a sustained release preparation. The serum salicylate concentration ranged from 0.3 to 1.6 mmol/l. Serum creatinine after 1 and 2 weeks and GFR after 2 weeks of ASA treatment showed no significant changes. There was a clearcut decrease in urinary excretion of prostaglandins PGE2 and PGF2 alpha, by 44% and 50%, respectively. It is concluded that therapeutic doses of ASA do not cause deterioration of GFR in patients with SLE and normal or moderately reduced renal function.

Abstract
N"-Cyano-N-4-pyridyl-N'-1,2,2-trimethylpropylguanidine (P 1134) is a new vasodilating antihypertensive compound. In an open study, P 1134 was given in single oral doses of from 10 to 25 mg to 12 previously untreated patients with essential hypertension. All patients responded with decreases in mean arterial pressure (MAP) of at least 10 mm Hg and with almost equal blood pressure decreases in the supine and erect position. The increase of dose was significantly correlated with a progressive reduction of blood pressure. At a dose of 25 mg, the maximal decrease in supine MAP averaged 38 mm Hg, and the maximal increase in heart rate averaged 23 beats/min. Peak effect and serum concentration were seen about 1 h after tablet intake. The serum half-life from the peak concentration averaged 2.5 h. It is concluded that P 1134 is a fast-acting, effective antihypertensive agent.

Immediate central and peripheral haemodynamic effects of a new vasodilating agent Pinacidil (P1134) in hypertensive man. CLINICAL PHYSIOLOGY (OXFORD, ENGLAND) 1981; 1:375-84. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immediate central and peripheral haemodynamic effects of a new vasodilating agent P 1134, in hypertensive man. After oral administration of 25 mg P 1134, the maximal haemodynamic changes were (mean +/- 1 SEM): mean blood pressure fell from 121.8 +/- 6.5 to 80.5 +/- 7.8 mmHg, heart rate increased 24.2 +/- 4.5 beats/min, cardiac output rose 2.9 +/- 0.3 1/min and forearm blood flow increased 1.0 +/- 0.1 ml/100 ml tissue/min. Stroke volume increased 17.0 +/- 2.1 ml and the inotropic state of the heart as judged from systolic time intervals increased. Total peripheral resistance and forearm vascular resistance were both reduced by approx. 50%. Linear correlations were found between the serum concentration of P 1134 and the change in mean blood pressure and total peripheral resistance. Changes in the other parameters mentioned above occurred progressively with changes in mean blood pressure and total peripheral resistance. It can be concluded that P 1134 is a very potent hypotensive agent with a haemodynamic profile identical to that seen with vasodilators with preferably act on precapillary resistance vessels. Potency and maximal efficacy exceeds that of hydralazine and seems like that of minoxidil. P 1134 is remarkably free from side-effects apart from causing water retention as all other vasodilators. It can be administered orally as well as intravenously. This makes P 1134 a very interesting compound in the treatment of moderate to severe hypertension, and further studies are well-founded.
