A regularized phase-field model for faceting in a kinetically controlled crystal growth

At equilibrium, the shape of a strongly anisotropic crystal exhibits corners when for some orientations the surface stiffness is negative. In the sharp-interface problem, the surface free energy is traditionally augmented with a curvature-dependent term in order to round the corners and regularize the dynamic equations that describe the motion of such interfaces. In this paper, we adopt a diffuse interface description and present a phase-field model for strongly anisotropic crystals that is regularized using an approximation of the Willmore energy. The Allen-Cahn equation is employed to model kinetically controlled crystal growth. Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions, it is shown that the model converges to the sharp-interface theory proposed by Herring. Then, the stress tensor is used to derive the force acting on the diffuse interface and to examine the properties of a corner at equilibrium. Finally, the coarsening dynamics of the faceting instability during growth is investigated. Phase-field simulations reveal the existence of a parabolic regime, with the mean facet length evolving in t , with t the time, as predicted by the sharp-interface theory. A specific coarsening mechanism is observed: a hill disappears as the two neighbouring valleys merge.

Nucleation and superstabilization in small systems

Phase transitions are known to present peculiarities in small systems that are related to depletion effects of the ambient phase. Mass conservation affects the conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium between a nucleus of the new phase and the matrix as compared with nucleation in infinite systems. This finite-size effect is known to delay the phase transition but can also impede nucleation in very small systems as it stabilizes the initial state, originally metastable in infinite systems. In this work, we investigate this superstabilization effect in the context of classical nucleation theory in multicomponent solutions and we derive an analytical expression for the system size below which nucleation becomes thermodynamically impossible. Comparing with the exact solution, our simple result is shown to accurately predict the superstabilization effect, and can therefore be used, for instance, as a guideline for the design of novel nanomaterials.

Atom-scale compositional distribution in InAlAsSb-based triple junction solar cells by atom probe tomography

The analysis by atom probe tomography (APT) of InAlAsSb layers with applications in triple junction solar cells (TJSCs) has shown the existence of In- and Sb-rich regions in the material. The composition variation found is not evident from the direct observation of the 3D atomic distribution and because of this a statistical analysis has been required. From previous analysis of these samples, it is shown that the small compositional fluctuations determined have a strong effect on the optical properties of the material and ultimately on the performance of TJSCs.

Kinetic theory of diffusion-limited nucleation

We examine binary nucleation in the size and composition space {R,c} using the formalism of the multivariable theory [N. V. Alekseechkin, J. Chem. Phys. 124, 124512 (2006)]. We show that the variable c drops out of consideration for very large curvature of the new phase Gibbs energy with composition. Consequently nuclei around the critical size have the critical composition, which is derived from the condition of criticality for the canonical variables and is found not to depend on surface tension. In this case, nucleation kinetics can be investigated in the size space only. Using macroscopic kinetics, we determine the general expression for the condensation rate when growth is limited by bulk diffusion, which accounts for both diffusion and capillarity and exhibits a different dependence with the critical size, as compared with the interface-limited regime. This new expression of the condensation rate for bulk diffusion-limited nucleation is the counterpart of the classical interface-limited result. We then extend our analysis to multicomponent solutions.

COMT polymorphism modulates the resting-state EEG alpha oscillatory response to acute nicotine in male non-smokers

Performance improvements in cognitive tasks requiring executive functions are evident with nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonists, and activation of the underlying neural circuitry supporting these cognitive effects is thought to involve dopamine neurotransmission. As individual difference in response to nicotine may be related to a functional polymorphism in the gene encoding catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), an enzyme that strongly influences cortical dopamine metabolism, this study examined the modulatory effects of the COMT Val158Met polymorphism on the neural response to acute nicotine as measured with resting-state electroencephalographic (EEG) oscillations. In a sample of 62 healthy non-smoking adult males, a single dose (6 mg) of nicotine gum administered in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design was shown to affect α oscillatory activity, increasing power of upper α oscillations in frontocentral regions of Met/Met homozygotes and in parietal/occipital regions of Val/Met heterozygotes. Peak α frequency was also found to be faster with nicotine (vs. placebo) treatment in Val/Met heterozygotes, who exhibited a slower α frequency compared to Val/Val homozygotes. The data tentatively suggest that interindividual differences in brain α oscillations and their response to nicotinic agonist treatment are influenced by genetic mechanisms involving COMT.

Critical nucleus composition in a multicomponent system

The properties of a critical nucleus are derived using the capillarity theory in the framework of classical nucleation. An analytical solution for the composition of a critical nucleus is given for low supersaturation. The theory is valid for any multicomponent systems. It is found that the deviation in nucleus composition from the equilibrium tie-line is mainly due to the difference in the Hessian of the Gibbs energy of the phases and the magnitude of the deviation in composition from equilibrium is order of the supersaturation. Despite our analysis strictly holds for low supersaturation, this suggests strong deviations near the spinodal line.

Effects of COMT genotype on sensory gating and its modulation by nicotine: Differences in low and high P50 suppressors

Elevated smoking rates seen in schizophrenia populations may be an attempt to correct neuropathologies associated with deficient nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and/or dopaminergic systems using exogenous nicotine. However, nicotine's effects on cognitive processing and sensory gating have been shown to be baseline-dependent. Evidence of a restorative effect on sensory gating deficits by nicotine-like agonists has been demonstrated, however, its underlying mechanisms in the context of dopamine dysregulation are unclear. Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), a key dopamine regulator in the brain, contains a co-dominant allele in which a valine-to-methionine substitution causes variations in enzymatic activity leading to reduced synaptic dopamine levels in the Val/Val genotype. Using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design with 57 non-smokers, this study examined the effects of COMT genotype on sensory gating and its modulation by nicotine in low vs. high suppressors. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that increased dopamine resulting from nicotine stimulation or Met allelic activity would benefit gating in low suppressors and impair gating in high suppressors, and that this gating improvement with nicotine would be more evident in Val carriers who were low suppressors, while the gating impairment would be more evident in Met carriers who were high suppressors. These findings reaffirm the importance of baseline-dependency and suggest a subtle relationship between COMT genotype and baseline-stratified levels of sensory gating, which may help to explain the variability of cognitive abilities in schizophrenia populations.

Clustering and pair correlation function in atom probe tomography

The measurement of the composition of small clusters from 3D maps as provided by atom probe tomography or Monte-Carlo simulations is a very tricky issue. A method based on pair correlation functions was developed. The analytical expression of the pair correlation function as a function of the phase composition, the number density and the size of spherical particles for a two-phase mono-dispersed system has been established. A best-fit procedure applied to experimental pair correlation function is shown to be a simple, fast and elegant way to determine the concentration of clusters and that of the parent phase as well as the radius and the number density of clusters. Application to carbon-doped silicon demonstrates the validity of this approach. Results were found very close to those derived by other means. This method was also applied to boron clustering in implanted silicon where clusters are not visible in 3D images. The advantage of this approach over other methods such as erosion or cluster identification is discussed.

Using computer simulations and focus groups for planned change in prenatal clinics

The Colleges of Nursing and Engineering in a southwest Florida university combined efforts to design a project to use time/motion techniques and focus groups to assess patent flow and effective and efficient use of human resources in public health clinics. Data for 877 observations were entered into a computer simulation program that displayed alternative configurations for health resource management. Information from focus groups was used to plan for ways to use clinic wait time more effectively. This article describes data collection and findings.
