Abstract
Lycium barbarum L., a traditional Chinese herb widely used in Asian countries, has been demonstrated to be protective against chronic diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. The objectives of this study were to determine the carotenoid content in L. barbarum by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, followed by preparation of a carotenoid nanoemulsion to evaluate the mechanism of inhibition on HT-29 colon cancer cells. The highest extraction yield of carotenoids was attained by employing a solvent system of hexane-ethanol-acetone (1:1:1, v/v/v). Nine carotenoids, including neoxanthin (4.47 μg g-1), all-trans-zeaxanthin and its cis-isomers (1666.3 μg g-1), all-trans-β-cryptoxanthin (51.69 μg g-1), all-trans-β-carotene and its cis-isomers (20.11 μg g-1), were separated within 45 min and quantified using a YMC C30 column and a gradient mobile phase of methanol-water (9:1, v/v) (A) and methylene chloride (B). A highly stable carotenoid nanoemulsion composed of CapryolTM 90, Transcutol®HP, Tween 80 and deionized water was prepared with a mean particle size of 15.1 nm. Characterization of zeaxanthin standard, blank nanoemulsion, carotenoid extract and carotenoid nanoemulsion by differential scanning calorimetry curves and Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed a good dispersion of zeaxanthin-dominated carotenoid extract with no significant chemical change after incorporation into nanoemulsion. The in vitro release kinetic study showed a higher release profile at pH 5.2 than at physiological pH 7.4, suggesting a rapid release of carotenoids in the acidic environment (pH 4.5-6.5) characteristic of tumors. Both the carotenoid nanoemulsion and the extract were effective at inhibiting growth of HT-29 colon cancer cells, with an IC50 of 4.5 and 4.9 μg ml-1, respectively. Also, both treatments could up-regulate p53 and p21 expression and down-regulate CDK2, CDK1, cyclin A and cyclin B expression and arrest the cell cycle at G2/M. The study may form a basis for further exploration of L. barbarum nanoemulsion in cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2) have been shown to be a novel therapeutic in many biomedical applications. Gold (Au) nanoparticles have also attracted widespread interest due to their chemical stability and unique optical properties. Thus, decorating Au on CeO2 nanoparticles would have potential for exploitation in the biomedical field. METHODS In the present work, CeO2 nanoparticles synthesized by a chemical combustion method were supported with 3.5% Au (Au/CeO2) by a deposition-precipitation method. The as-synthesized Au, CeO2, and Au/CeO2 nanoparticles were evaluated for antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity in RAW 264.7 normal cells and A549 lung cancer cells. RESULTS The as-synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible measurements. The X-ray diffraction study confirmed the formation of cubic fluorite-structured CeO2 nanoparticles with a size of 10 nm. All synthesized nanoparticles were nontoxic towards RAW 264.7 cells at doses of 0-1,000 μM except for Au at >100 μM. For A549 cancer cells, Au/CeO2 had the highest inhibitory effect, followed by both Au and CeO2 which showed a similar effect at 500 and 1,000 μM. Initial binding of nanoparticles occurred through localized positively charged sites in A549 cells as shown by a shift in zeta potential from positive to negative after 24 hours of incubation. A dose-dependent elevation in reactive oxygen species indicated that the pro-oxidant activity of the nanoparticles was responsible for their cytotoxicity towards A549 cells. In addition, cellular uptake seen on transmission electron microscopic images indicated predominant localization of nanoparticles in the cytoplasmic matrix and mitochondrial damage due to oxidative stress. With regard to antibacterial activity, both types of nanoparticles had the strongest inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis in monoculture systems, followed by Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, while, in coculture tests with Lactobacillus plantarum, S. aureus was inhibited to a greater extent than the other bacteria. CONCLUSION Gold-supported CeO2 nanoparticles may be a potential nanomaterial for in vivo application owing to their biocompatible and antibacterial properties.

Abstract
Spinal cord transection silences neuronal activity in the deafferented cortex to cutaneous stimulation of the body and untreated animals show no improvement in functional outcome (weight-supported stepping) with time after lesion. However, adult rats spinalized since neonates that receive exercise therapy exhibit greater functional recovery and exhibit more cortical reorganization. This suggests that the change in the somatotopic organization of the cortex may be functionally relevant. To address this issue, we chronically implanted arrays of microwire electrodes into the infragranular layers of the hindlimb somatosensory cortex of adult rats neonatally transected at T8/T9 that received exercise training (spinalized rats) and of normal adult rats. Multiple, single neuron activity was recorded during passive sensory stimulation, when the animals were anesthetized, and during active sensorimotor stimulation during treadmill-induced locomotion when the animal was awake and free to move. Our results demonstrate that cortical neurons recorded from the spinalized rats that received exercise 1) had higher spontaneous firing rates, 2) were more likely to respond to both sensory and sensorimotor stimulations of the forelimbs, and also 3) responded with more spikes per stimulus than those recorded from normal rats, suggesting expansion of the forelimb map into the hindlimb map. During treadmill locomotion the activity of neurons recorded from neonatally spinalized rats was greater during weight-supported steps on the treadmill compared with the neuronal activity during nonweight supported steps. We hypothesize that this increased activity is related to the ability of the animal to take weight supported steps and that, therefore, these changes in cortical organization after spinal cord injury are relevant for functional recovery.

Abstract
Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) modified with sodium and calcium salts of poly(γ-glutamic acid) (NaPGA and CaPGA) were synthesized by the coprecipitation method, followed by characterization and evaluation of their antibacterial and cytotoxic effects. Superparamagnetic MNPs are particularly attractive for magnetic driving as well as bacterial biofilm and cell targeting in in vivo applications. Characterization of synthesized MNPs by the Fourier transform infrared spectra and magnetization curves confirmed the PGA coating on MNPs. The mean diameter of NaPGA- and CaPGA-coated MNPs as determined by transmission electron microscopy was 11.8 and 14 nm, respectively, while the x-ray diffraction pattern revealed the as-synthesized MNPs to be pure magnetite. Based on agar dilution assay, both NaPGA- and CaPGA-coated MNPs showed a lower minimum inhibitory concentration in Salmonella enteritidis SE 01 than the commercial antibiotics linezolid and cefaclor, but the former was effective against Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 10832, whereas the latter was effective against Escherichia coli O157:H7 TWC 01. An in vitro cytotoxicity study in human skin fibroblast cells as measured by MTT assay implied the as-synthesized MNPs to be nontoxic. This outcome demonstrated that both γ-PGA-modified MNPs are cytocompatible and possess antibacterial activity in vitro, and thereby should be useful in in vivo studies for biomedical applications.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficiency in treatment of lead-induced intoxication in mice with γ-PGA as chelating agent and compare with the drug (meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid). The results showed the incorporation of γ-PGA at 200 and 400 mg/kg could reduce the accumulation of lead in the liver, heart, and testis; however, the latter was more effective in decreasing the lead content in the kidney and spleen. Nevertheless, both doses failed to inhibit the lead accumulation in the lung and brain. Additionally, both doses of γ-PGA could reduce TBARs in the kidney and brain, as well as elevate δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydrase (δ-ALAD) activity in blood and decrease glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activities in the serum. For hematological parameters, both white blood cells (WBCs) and hematocrite (HCT) were raised by 400 mg/kg of γ-PGA, while for both doses of γ-PGA, a slight decline in hemoglobin (HGB), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), and mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) was observed, with the red blood cells (RBCs) being unaffected.

Abstract
Diffraction-enhanced imaging (DEI) is a new x-ray imaging modality that has been shown to enhance contrast between normal and cancerous breast tissues. In this study, diffraction-enhanced imaging in computed tomography (DEI-CT) mode was used to quantitatively characterize the refraction contrasts of the organized structures associated with invasive human breast cancer. Using a high-sensitivity Si (3 3 3) reflection, the individual features of breast cancer, including masses, calcifications and spiculations, were observed. DEI-CT yields 14, 5 and 7 times higher CT numbers and 10, 9 and 6 times higher signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) for masses, calcifications and spiculations, respectively, as compared to conventional CT of the same specimen performed using the same detector, x-ray energy and dose. Furthermore, DEI-CT at ten times lower dose yields better SNR than conventional CT. In light of the recent development of a compact DEI prototype using an x-ray tube as its source, these results, acquired at a clinically relevant x-ray energy for which a pre-clinical DEI prototype currently exists, suggest the potential of clinical implementation of mammography with DEI-CT to provide high-contrast, high-resolution images of breast cancer (Parham 2006 PhD Dissertation University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).

Abstract
Soybean cake, a byproduct obtained during the processing of soybean oil, has been shown to be a rich source of isoflavones. The objectives of this study were to use soybean cake as raw material for processing into powder and to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity. Eleven treatments, including powders of malonylglucoside, glucoside, acetylglucoside, aglycone, ISO-1, and ISO-2, as well as genistein standard, gamma-PGA, control, normal, and PDTC, were used for evaluation. A total of 77 mice were each provided daily with tube feeding for 4 weeks at a dose of 0.3 mL of aqueous solution from each treatment, and inflammation was induced with intraperitoneal injection of 1 mg/kg of body weight lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Results showed that all of the isoflavone powders and genistein standard were effective in inhibiting LPS-induced inflammation, lowering leukocyte number in mice blood and reducing production of IL-1beta, IL-6, NO, and PGE2 in both peritoneal exudate cell supernatant and peritoneal exudate fluid. All of the isoflavone treatments failed to retard T cell proliferation; however, both ISO-1 and ISO-2 could inhibit B cell proliferation. The difference in anti-inflammatory activity was minor between any of the isoflavone treatments.

10078 Background: Using the Luminex multiplex assay, we have reported significant correlations between serum levels of MCP-1, eotaxin, and IL-6 and disease characteristics in breast cancer (BCa) patients. We now examine the potential of utilizing a general cytokine profile to develop a statistical model to predict certain disease states in these patients. Methods: Sera from 36 BCa patients (24 node-negative, 12 node-positive, 12 normals) were analyzed using the Luminex assay for levels of 21 cytokines (IL-1α, 1b, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17, IFN-γ, G-CSF, GM-CSF, TNF-α, IP-10, MIP-1α, RANTES, MCP-1, eotaxin). Logistic regression models were used to assess if a binary outcome variable (Y) can be predicted by using serum cytokine levels (X). The area under a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (c) was used to assess the potential utility of a biomarker. The larger the value of c, the better the biomarker. Results: MCP-1 was found to be a possible predictor of the presence of BCa while other potential biomarkers were IL-13, MIP-1α and eotaxin. The higher the MCP-1 level, the greater the likelihood that the patient would have BCa. Similar relationships applied to the other potential biomarkers. Among BCa patients, GM-CSF seemed to be a good predictor of nodal status with lower levels of GM-CSF predicting positive nodes. Other potential biomarkers with a similar expression pattern for nodal status were MCP-1, IL-6 and IL-5. Due to small sample sizes, we were unable to examine a potential “panel” of cytokines to develop a prognostic algorithm based on serum analysis. Conclusions: MCP-1, which was previously shown to be elevated in BCa, may also have some predictive value linking the presence of disease and disease severity as measured by nodal status. Other prominent cytokines from earlier studies (MIP-1α, eotaxin, IL-6) also displayed some possible predictive value. Our results warrant studying a larger population in order to establish a unified prognostic formula for BCa based on serum cytokine levels. Abstract
The effect of heating time and antioxidants on the heterocyclic amine (HAs) formation in marinated foods were studied. Food samples were cooked at 98 +/- 2 degrees C for 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 h in a closed pan in the presence of water, soy sauce and rock candy with or without antioxidants. The various HAs in marinated food samples and juice were analyzed by HPLC with photodiode-array detection. Results showed that the amount of HAs formed during heating followed an increased order for each increasing heating time. A larger variety and higher amount of HAs were generated in marinated pork when compared to marinated eggs and bean cake. In marinated juice, the levels of HAs were present in greater amount than in marinated foods. The incorporation of antioxidants Vitamin C, Vitamin E and BHT were found to be effective towards HAs inhibition, however, the effect was minor.

Abstract
Sludge from a printed circuit board factory containing high concentrations of Cu and Pb was characterized. Aqueous ammonia solutions were used to extract metals from the sludge. The extraction reactions were completed within 6 hrs. The best extraction efficiency was found at pH of 10.0. Higher solid-liquid ratio and higher ammonia concentration resulted in better extraction efficiency. Fractionation experiments showed that Cu and Pb were mainly extracted from the Fe-Mn oxide-bound and carbonate-bound fractions. Extracted sludge could meet the TCLP regulation limit and be categorized as a non-hazardous waste. Results show that ammonia extraction is of potential in resource recovery and in detoxification of hazardous waste.

Abstract
Many receptor-like kinases have been identified in plants and have been shown by genetic or transgenic knockouts to play diverse physiological roles; however, to date, the cytosolic interacting proteins of relatively few of these kinases have been identified. We have previously identified a predominantly pollen-expressed receptor-like kinase of petunia (Petunia inflata), named PRK1, and we have shown by the antisense RNA approach that it is required for microspores to progress from the unicellular to bicellular stage. To investigate the PRK1-mediated signal transduction pathway, PRK1-K cDNA, encoding most of the cytoplasmic domain of PRK1, was used as bait in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) two-hybrid screens of pollen/pollen tube cDNA libraries of petunia. A protein named kinase interacting protein 1 (KIP1) was found to interact very strongly with PRK1-K. This interaction was greatly reduced when lysine-462 of PRK1-K, believed to be essential for kinase activity, was replaced with arginine (the resulting protein is named PRK1-K462R). The amino acid sequence of KIP1 deduced from full-length cDNA contains an EF-hand Ca(2+)-binding motif and nine predicted coiled-coil regions. The yeast two-hybrid assay and affinity chromatography showed that KIP1 interacts with itself to form a dimer or higher multimer. KIP1 is present in a single copy in the genome, and is expressed predominantly in pollen with a similar temporal pattern to PRK1. In situ hybridization showed that PRK1 and KIP1 transcripts were localized in the cytoplasm of pollen. PRK1-K phosphorylated KIP1-NT (amino acids 1--716), whereas PRK1-K462R only weakly phosphorylated KIP1-NT in vitro.

Abstract
Although the columella cells of the root cap have been identified as the site of gravity perception, the cellular events that mediate gravity signaling remain poorly understood. To determine if cytoplasmic and/or wall pH mediates the initial stages of root gravitropism, we combined a novel cell wall pH sensor (a cellulose binding domain peptide-Oregon green conjugate) and a cytoplasmic pH sensor (plants expressing pH-sensitive green fluorescent protein) to monitor pH dynamics throughout the graviresponding Arabidopsis root. The root cap apoplast acidified from pH 5.5 to 4.5 within 2 min of gravistimulation. Concomitantly, cytoplasmic pH increased in columella cells from 7.2 to 7.6 but was unchanged elsewhere in the root. These changes in cap pH preceded detectable tropic growth or growth-related pH changes in the elongation zone cell wall by 10 min. Altering the gravity-related columella cytoplasmic pH shift with caged protons delayed the gravitropic response. Together, these results suggest that alterations in root cap pH likely are involved in the initial events that mediate root gravity perception or signal transduction.

Abstract
Many bisexual flowering plants possess a reproductive strategy called self-incompatibility (SI) that enables the female tissue (the pistil) to reject self but accept non-self pollen for fertilization. Three different SI mechanisms are discussed, each controlled by two separate, highly polymorphic genes at the S-locus. For the Solanaceae and Papaveraceae types, the genes controlling female function in SI, the S-RNase gene and the S-gene, respectively, have been identified. For the Brassicaceae type, the gene controlling male function, SCR/SP11, and the gene controlling female function, SRK, have been identified. The S-RNase based mechanism involves degradation of RNA of self-pollen tubes; the S-protein based mechanism involves a signal transduction cascade in pollen, including a transient rise in [Ca(2+)]i and subsequent protein phosphorylation/dephosphorylation; and the SRK (a receptor kinase) based mechanism involves interaction of a pollen ligand, SCR/SP11, with SRK, followed by a signal transduction cascade in the stigmatic surface cell.

Abstract
For Solanaceae type self-incompatibility, discrimination between self and nonself pollen by the pistil is controlled by the highly polymorphic S-RNase gene. To date, the mechanism generating the allelic diversity of this gene is largely unknown. Natural populations offer a good opportunity to address this question because they likely contain different alleles that share recent common progenitors. We identified 19 S haplotypes from a natural population of Petunia inflata in Argentina, used reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction to obtain cDNAs for 15 alleles of the S-RNase gene, and sequenced all the cDNAs. Phylogenetic studies revealed that five of these alleles and two previously identified alleles form a major clade, and that the 5' region of S(19) allele was derived from an ancestor allele closely related to S(2), whereas its 3' region was derived from an ancestor allele closely related to S(8). A similar evolutionary relationship was found among S(3), S(12), and S(15) alleles. These findings suggest that intragenic recombination contributed to the generation of the allelic diversity of the S-RNase gene. Two additional findings emerged from the sequence comparisons. First, the nucleotide sequence of the S(1) allele identified in this work is completely identical to that of the previously identified S(1) allele of a different origin. Second, in the two hypervariable regions HVa and HVb, thought to be involved in determining S allele specificity, S(6) and S(9) alleles differ only by four nucleotides, all in HVb, resulting in two amino acid differences. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
PRK1, a receptor-like kinase that is expressed in pollen, pollen tubes, and ovaries, has been shown to play important roles in pollen development and embryo sac development in Petunia inflata. We have used the kinase domain of PRK1 as a bait in the yeast two-hybrid system to identify PRK1-interacting proteins. The screening resulted in isolation of a cDNA encoding a protein highly homologous to the human and yeast beta-subunit of translation initiation factor 2B (eIF2B-beta), which was designated NeIF2Bbeta. eIF2B is a guanine nucleotide exchange protein that functions in the regulation of translation in eukaryotic cells. Deletion mutants of NeIF2Bbeta were analyzed for their interaction with PRK1, and the results suggested that the N-terminal half of NeIF2Bbeta, especially the region between residue 103 and 235, is important for the interaction. This protein association was confirmed by in vitro binding assay of the recombinant NeIF2Bbeta and PRK1 proteins. Despite high sequence homology between NeIF2Bbeta and its yeast counterpart, the NeIF2Bbeta cDNA could not rescue the phenotype of the yeast mutant strain lacking the GCD7 gene encoding eIF2B-beta, when transferred into the mutant strain.

Abstract
The Solanaceae family of flowering plants possesses a type of self-incompatibility mechanism that enables the pistil to reject self pollen but accept non-self pollen for fertilization. The pistil function in this system has been shown to be controlled by a polymorphic gene at the S-locus, termed the S-RNase gene. The pollen function is believed to be controlled by another as yet unidentified polymorphic gene at the S-locus, termed the pollen S-gene. As a first step in using a functional genomic approach to identify the pollen S-gene, a genomic BAC (bacterial artificial chromosome) library of the S2S2 genotype of Petunia inflata, a self-incompatible solanaceous species, was constructed using a Ti-plasmid based BAC vector, BIBAC2. The average insert size was 136.4 kb and the entire library represented a 7.5-fold genome coverage. Screening of the library using cDNAs for the S2-RNase gene and 13 pollen-expressed genes that are linked to the S-locus yielded 51 positive clones, with at least one positive clone for each gene. Collectively, at least 2 Mb of the chromosomal region was spanned by these clones. Together, three clones that contained the S2-RNase gene spanned approximately 263 kb. How this BAC library and the clones identified could be used to identify the pollen S-gene and to study other aspects of self-incompatibility is discussed.

Abstract
Plants respond in complex ways to their environment, to their internal physiological status, and to the activity of other plants, pathogens, herbivores, and organisms. Plant Signaling 2000, a symposium sponsored by the Penn State Intercollege Graduate Program in Plant Physiology (May 18-20, 2000), explored the machinery underlying these responses and their potential for cross talk. We recount here some of the major themes emerging from this interdisciplinary symposium, which ranged from genetic and biochemical analyses of signaling pathways in Arabidopsis and other model plants to field studies of plants responding to insect damage.

Abstract
Solanaceous type self-incompatibility (SI) is controlled by a single polymorphic locus, termed the S-locus. The only gene at the S-locus that has been characterized thus far is the S-RNase gene, which controls pistil function, but not pollen function, in SI interactions between pistil and pollen. One approach to identifying additional genes (including the pollen S-gene, which controls pollen function in SI) at the S-locus and to study the structural organization of the S-locus is chromosome walking from the S-RNase gene. However, the presence of highly repetitive sequences in its flanking regions has made this approach difficult so far. Here, we used RNA differential display to identify pollen cDNAs of Petunia inflata, a self-incompatible solanaceous species, which exhibited restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) for at least one of the three S-haplotypes (S1, S2, and S3) examined. We found that the genes corresponding to 10 groups of pollen cDNAs are genetically tightly linked to the S-RNase gene. These cDNA markers will expedite the mapping and cloning of the chromosomal region of the Solanaceae S-locus by providing multiple starting points.

Abstract
In order to investigate the relationship of late potential (LP) to assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI), we studied 101 Chinese patients with AMI (10+/-2.4 days) in Taiwan by collecting 24-h ECG from a Holter tape recorder and signal-averaged ECG from a high-resolution ECG cart. Of the 101 patients, 36 patients had LP (LP group) and 65 patients did not (NLP group). The mean heart rate was significantly lower in the LP group than in the NLP group (P<0.05). The LP group had a significantly increased high-frequency (HF) spectral component of HRV compared with the NLP group (P<0.005), but their low-frequency (LF) to HF ratio (LF/HF) was lower (P<0.05). Analysis of the circadian variation of HRV revealed significant difference of morning SDRR (standard deviation of normal RR intervals) compared with noon SDRR (P<0.05 in the LP group, P<0.005 in the NLP group) and evening SDRR (P<0.05 in the LP group, P<0.005 in the NLP group). In the NLP group, morning HF (normalized unit, nu) was 0.258+/-0.098 compared with noon HF (nu) of 0.219+/-0.83 (P<0.05) and evening HF (nu) of 0. 225+/-0.085 (P<0.05). Nine patients died during follow-up from cardiac causes, three (8.3%) in the LP group and six (9.2%) in the NLP group. In post-MI patients, there was higher vagal tone in patients with late potentials compared to those without late potentials. NLP patients had more circadian change in vagal tone compared with LP patients.

Abstract
It is known that light-box luminance is an important factor in the detection of objects on radiographs. Existing methods for image contrast enhancement do not consider the luminance effect so that the enhancement may be inappropriate for the processed image displayed on a video monitor. Based on the properties of human visual system (HVS), an adaptive local contrast enhancement (ALCE) method was developed to enhance the medical image displayed on the video monitor by investigating the influence on human eyes of display luminance difference between a conventional light-box and a video monitor. The HVS model indicated parts of a radiograph unclear to human eyes at a given display luminance. By calculating the contrast of the image pixel by pixel, we found the parts of an image that are needed to be amplified at low display luminance and provided these parts with adequate enhancement. The processed image displayed on a video monitor was visually equivalent to the raw radiograph displayed on a light-box. A quantitative evaluation method of image quality assessment was used to compare the ALCE-processed image with others.

Abstract
The 3-D ventricle model in this study was reconstructed from a series of MRI torso cross-section data. We used a 3-D voxel array to represent the ventricle. As in cardiac simulations proposed by previous studies, the activation sequence and body surface ECG were simulated in this model. But to reduce the amount of elements in the model, so that the amount of parameters in the model can be handled numerically, we propose another approach to simulate cardiac activity. A mesh model was constructed on the closed surface formed by epicardiac and endocardiac surfaces of the ventricle. We propose a method to simulate the activation sequence on the epicardiac and endocardiac surfaces of the mesh model. As with the uniform double layer theorem, body surface ECG can be estimated in terms of epicardiac and endocardiac surface current source. Consequently, we can also generate ECG waveforms corresponding to this mesh simulation. Both the depolarization sequence and ECG simulated by the mesh model resemble those generated by the 3-D voxel model. However, the mesh model greatly simplified the process of ECG simulation. Both the simulation of depolarization and ECG estimation were expressed in terms of clear and simple mathematical representations. Consequently, we can analytically investigate the effects of the mesh model's parameters on the cardiac activation sequence and ECG. It could be a useful tool to numerically study the relation of ECG waveforms and electrical activity of the heart.

Abstract
The practice of holding annual ceremonies in honor of cadaver donors in Taiwan's medical schools has a history of nearly a hundred years. It originated in Japan, where such ceremonies have been widely held in medical schools since the practice was founded by Toyo Yamawaki, who was the first medical scholar in Japan to engage in dissection of the human body and was the author of the first anatomy book to appear in Japan, the Zoshi. The practice of holding donor ceremonies was introduced into Taiwan after the Jaiwu Sino - Japanese war, when the island became a Japanese colony. The tradition was upheld in the Viceroy's Medical School, the Viceroy's College of Medicine, and Taihoku (Taipei) Imperial University College of Medicine, and continued since the restoration of Chinese power to the present. The practice of holding cadaver donor ceremonies in institutions of medical education is intended to express respect for the donor as well as to encourage the practice of cadaver donation to the benefit of medical education.

Abstract
Hürthle cell neoplasm of the thyroid gland is rarely associated with tumor necrosis. We report a case of Hürthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland with extensive necrosis. An 82-year-old man had had a right neck mass for more than 10 years. Approximately two to three weeks before he was hospitalized, this neck mass became progressively enlarged. An 131I scan could not demonstrate the right lobe of the thyroid gland, while the contralateral lobe was unremarkable. A 99mTc-sestamibi scan showed increased uptake on the lesion side. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed necrosis with macrophages in the initial aspirate, and the secondary aspirate appeared suspicious for a Hürthle cell tumor. The patient had a total thyroidectomy, and the pathology proved to be Hürthle cell carcinoma with tumor necrosis.

Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is a useful method for assessment of the activities of autonomic nervous system. The RR intervals in ECG is measured for this purpose. However, RR intervals are not suitable for HRV analysis in atrioventricular block (AV) block patients with ventricular inhibited (VVI) pacemaker, as the intervals will be fixed by the ventricular pacemaker. Thus we used an esophageal lead to detect PP intervals for analysis of HRV. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term HRV by using an esophageal electrode to detect the atrial signal and PP intervals in AV block patients. Fifteen AV block patients before and after temporary VVI pacemaker and 15 subjects with normal AV conduction (control group) were enrolled in this study. The atrial signals from esophageal lead, ECG and intraatrial lead were recorded. The duration was 10 min. We compared correlation coefficient of PP intervals from different leads in AV block patients and the control group. We also compared the PP interval's variability parameters between the control group and AV block patients, before and after insertion of a temporary ventricular inhibited pacemaker. The esophageal PP intervals were excellently correlated with intraatrial AA intervals (r=0.98+/-0.01). The HRV using esophageal PP intervals with time domain demonstrated a significant decrease in patients with AV block (standard deviation of all PP intervals (SDNN) (s)=0.022+/-0.014; percentage difference between adjacent PP intervals that are greater than 50 ms (pNN-50) (%)=0.052+/-0.038; square root of the mean of squares of differences between duration of neighboring PP intervals (r-MSDD) (s)=0.322+/-0.082) but this returned to normal after insertion of a temporary ventricular inhibited pacemaker (SDNN (s)=0.035+/-0.009; pNN-50 (%)=2.540+/-1.682; r-MSDD (s)=0.542+/-0.190). However, the ratio of low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) still increased (LF/HF=4.120+/-1.802). The result of this short-term HRV analysis suggested that withdrawal of vagal tone or increased sympathetic activity in AV block patients compared with the control group. This appearance was normalized after insertion of a temporary VVI pacemaker. however, abnormal sympathovagal balance still remained.
