Abstract
Objectives Bowel preparation is burdensome because of long cleansing times and large dose volumes of conventional polyethylene glycol (PEG) lavage solution NiflecⓇ (Nif). MoviPrep (Mov)Ⓡ is a hyperosmolar preparation of PEG, electrolytes, and ascorbic acid; despite the smaller dose volume of 2 L, it can be challenging for many patients. We examined a more effective and acceptable bowel preparation method without compromising cleanliness and effectiveness, combining low-residue diet and laxative (Modified Brown Method) in Mov administered 1 day pre-colonoscopy. Methods This multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel-group comparative study, conducted at Hiroshima University Hospital and 7 affiliated hospitals in May 2015-March 2016, evaluated adherence to and effectiveness of Mov in bowel preparation. Participants (n=380) were allocated to receive 1 of 3 pre-colonoscopy regimens: Nif+Modified Brown Method (Group A), Mov+Modified Brown Method (Group B), or Mov+Laxative (Group C). Results Total intake volume showed no significant difference among the groups. Bowel preparation time was significantly shorter in Group B (112.4±44.8 min, n=118) than in Groups A (131.3±59 min, n=105) and C (122.6±48.1 min, n=115). Sleep disturbance (37%) was significantly higher in Group B than Group A; distension (11%) was significantly lower in Group C than in Groups A and B (p<0.05, respectively). No severe adverse events occurred in any group. Conclusions Mov+Modified Brown method provided significantly shorter bowel preparation time, with no significant difference in total intake volume among the regimens. Mov+Laxative yielded significantly less distension than the other groups, with bowel preparation equivalent to that of the Nif+Modified Brown method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic-gland type (GA-FG) is a rare variant of gastric neoplasia. However, the etiology, classification, and clinicopathological features of gastric epithelial neoplasm of fundic-gland mucosa lineage (GEN-FGML; generic term of GA-FG related neoplasm) are not fully elucidated. We performed a large, multicenter, retrospective study to establish a new classification and clarify the clinicopathological features of GEN-FGML. METHODS One hundred GEN-FGML lesions in 94 patients were collected from 35 institutions between 2008 and 2019. We designed a new histopathological classification of GEN-FGML using immunohistochemical analysis and analyzed via clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and genetic evaluation. RESULTS GEN-FGML was classified into 3 major types; oxyntic gland adenoma (OGA), GA-FG, and gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic-gland mucosa type (GA-FGM). In addition, GA-FGM was classified into 3 subtypes; Type 1 (organized with exposure type), Type 2 (disorganized with exposure type), and Type 3 (disorganized with non-exposure type). OGA and GA-FG demonstrated low-grade epithelial neoplasm, and GA-FGM should be categorized as an aggressive variant of GEN-FGML that demonstrated high-grade epithelial neoplasm (Type 2 > 1, 3). The frequent presence of GNAS mutation was a characteristic genetic feature of GEN-FGML (7/34, 20.6%; OGA 1/3, 33.3%; GA-FG 3/24, 12.5%; GA-FGM 3/7, 42.9%) in mutation analysis using next-generation sequencing. CONCLUSIONS We have established a new histopathological classification of GEN-FGML and propose a new lineage of gastric epithelial neoplasm that harbors recurrent GNAS mutation. This classification will be useful to estimate the malignant potential of GEN-FGML and establish an appropriate standard therapeutic approach.

Abstract
The OPERA experiment was designed to discover the vτ appearance in a vμ beam, due to neutrino oscillations. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consisted of a nuclear photographic emulsion/lead target with a mass of about 1.25 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It was exposed from 2008 to 2012 to the CNGS beam: an almost pure vμ beam with a baseline of 730 km, collecting a total of 1.8·1020 protons on target. The OPERA Collaboration eventually assessed the discovery of vμ→vτ oscillations with a statistical significance of 6.1 σ by observing ten vτ CC interaction candidates. These events have been published on the Open Data Portal at CERN. This paper provides a detailed description of the vτ data sample to make it usable by the whole community.

Abstract
Most patients with gastric mucosa‐associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma are infected with Helicobacter pylori, and eradication therapy is the first‐line treatment for localized disease with H pylori infection. However, there were several reports showing effectiveness of eradication therapy in even H pylori negative cases. Gastric MALT lymphomas are endoscopically classified into three common types: superficial, ulcerative, and elevated types. For the past 20 years, we have encountered 200 cases of localized gastric MALT lymphoma. Among them, only 4 cases (2%) showed similar macroscopic findings to those of nodular gastritis (gastric MALT lymphoma with nodular gastritis‐like appearance; M‐NGA). Here, we compared clinicopathological characteristics and prevalence of non‐H pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) infection between M‐NGA and other common types of gastric MALT lymphoma. To examine the prevalence of NHPH infection, DNA was extracted from formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded biopsy tissues from four cases of M‐NGA, 20 cases of common endoscopic types of gastric MALT lymphoma, and 10 cases of nodular gastritis. We used a highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction assay to detect the presence of five species of NHPH (Helicobacter suis, H felis, H bizzozeronii, H salomonis, and H heilmannii). H suis infection was detected in 4, 2, and 0 of the 4, 20, and 10 cases of M‐NGA, other types of gastric MALT lymphoma, and nodular gastritis, respectively. Other NHPH species were not detected in any cases. Complete response rate by eradication therapy was 4/4 in M‐NGA cases. Therefore, nodular gastritis‐like MALT lymphoma, which shows a very rare phenotype, is closely associated with NHPH infection, and eradication therapy may be the first‐choice treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Serum interleukin-18 (IL-18) levels are increased in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD). In addition, IL-18 levels are increased in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and are associated with arthritis activity. We determined whether increased IL-18 levels are associated with ILD in RA. METHOD RA patients were enrolled using an RA cohort database. Plasma IL-18 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. ILD was determined by a pulmonologist and a radiologist based on chest radiography and computed tomography findings. IL-18 levels for RA with ILD and RA without ILD were compared. Associations between ILD and various markers including IL-18 and confounding factors (e.g. smoking history) were investigated by logistic regression analysis. Diagnostic values of IL-18 for the presence of ILD were investigated using receiver operating characteristics curve analysis. RESULTS ILD was complicated in 8.2% (n = 26) of the study population (N = 312). Plasma IL-18 levels were higher for RA patients with ILD than for RA patients without ILD (721.0 ± 481.4 vs 436.8 ± 438.9 pg/mL, p < 0.001). IL-18, Krebs von den Lungen-6, and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody titre and glucocorticoid doses were independently associated with the presence of ILD during multivariate logistic regression analysis. Sensitivity and specificity of IL-18 levels for the detection of ILD in RA patients were 65.3% and 76.3%, respectively (area under the curve = 0.73). CONCLUSION Plasma IL-18 levels were higher for RA patients with ILD than for those without ILD. Increased IL-18 levels were associated with the presence of ILD.

Abstract
The OPERA experiment was designed to study ν_{μ}→ν_{τ} oscillations in the appearance mode in the CERN to Gran Sasso Neutrino beam (CNGS). In this Letter, we report the final analysis of the full data sample collected between 2008 and 2012, corresponding to 17.97×10^{19} protons on target. Selection criteria looser than in previous analyses have produced ten ν_{τ} candidate events, thus reducing the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of ν_{τ} properties. A multivariate approach for event identification has been applied to the candidate events and the discovery of ν_{τ} appearance is confirmed with an improved significance level of 6.1σ. |Δm_{32}^{2}| has been measured, in appearance mode, with an accuracy of 20%. The measurement of the ν_{τ} charged-current cross section, for the first time with a negligible contamination from ν[over ¯]_{τ}, and the first direct evidence for the ν_{τ} lepton number are also reported.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS AND AIMS The serological risk-prediction system combined the pepsinogen (PG) test, and anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody is available for evaluation of gastric cancer risk. In this system, chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) or H. pylori infection is diagnosed. Subjects with H. pylori negative and PG test negative (group A) are supposed to be those who have never been infected with H. pylori and are at extremely low risk for gastric cancer. However, a certain proportion of patients with CAG has been identified as the extremely low-risk group (group A). Here we examined endoscopic atrophy and investigated its relationship with the ABC classification system. METHODS We examined 540 patients. All patients underwent an endoscopic examination for evaluating corpus atrophy. Fasting sera were collected and serum PGs and anti-H. pylori antibody (Hp-Ab) titer (E-plate Eiken) were evaluated. RESULTS Of the 540 patients, 306 were classified into group A. However, 136 of them showed signs of endoscopic atrophy (group A with CAG). Group A with CAG frequently comprised the elderly. A new titer cut-off (<3 U/mL) of the Hp-Ab improved the discrimination of group A with CAG by 8%. CONCLUSION The prevalence of group A with CAG patients is a critical problem, especially in elderly subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM In Western countries, endoscopic removal of all adenomas during colonoscopy is recommended. The present study evaluates the usefulness of magnifying colonoscopy without removal of diminutive (≤5 mm) colorectal polyps. METHODS Patients with diminutive polyps who were observed for over 5 years using magnification at Hiroshima University Hospital were selected retrospectively. Lesions ≥6 mm in size, depressed lesions, and lesions with type V pit pattern were indications for endoscopic resection. We investigated the characteristics of lesions indicated for endoscopic resection detected on surveillance colonoscopy and the risk factors for the incidence of lesions indicated for endoscopic resection. RESULTS A total of 706 consecutive patients were enrolled. Sixty-eight lesions indicated for endoscopic resection were detected, averaging 9.0 ± 4.8 mm, and 33 (49%) lesions were located in the right colon. Pathological diagnoses were adenoma, Tis carcinoma, and T1 carcinoma in 58 (85%), eight (12%), and two (3%) lesions, respectively. Five lesions were considered to grow from previously detected diminutive polyps. Relative risks for the incidence of a lesion indicated for endoscopic resection were 1.76 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.004-3.23) for males compared with females, 3.76 (95% CI, 2.03-7.50) for more than three polyps at initial colonoscopy compared with one polyp, and 2.84 (95% CI, 1.43-5.24) for patients with carcinoma at initial colonoscopy compared with patients with no lesion indicated for endoscopic resection. Nine carcinomas were resected endoscopically. CONCLUSION Diminutive low-grade adenomas detected by using magnifying colonoscopy may not necessarily require removal.

Abstract
AIMS Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), including benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) are cationic surfactants and have been used widely as general disinfectants in the medical field due to their strong antibacterial effects and low cytotoxicity to human cells. 4,4'-(α,ω-hexametylenedithio) bis (1-octylpyridinium bromide) (4DTBP-6,8) is one of the potent bis-QACs synthesized to improve the antimicrobial activities of mono-QACs such as BAC. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of 4DTBP-6,8 against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a prevalent hospital pathogen. METHODS AND RESULTS The minimum inhibitory concentrations of 4DTBP-6,8, CPC and BAC against P. aeruginosa were measured. 4DTBP-6,8 exhibited strong antibacterial activity. We assessed the bactericidal effects of QACs against P. aeruginosa under certain conditions and their cytotoxicities in human epithelial cells using lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release. 4DTBP-6,8 exerted excellent bactericidal effects against high concentrations of bacteria, biofilm cells and even in the presence of contaminated proteins. Cellular LDH was not released by the treatment with 4DTBP-6,8. CONCLUSIONS 4DTBP-6,8 exhibited the strongest bactericidal activity against P. aeruginosa among the three QACs tested without any cytotoxicity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The potent bis-QAC, 4DTBP-6,8 has the potential to be an effective disinfectant in preventing hospital infections caused by P. aeruginosa.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Halitosis is caused by volatile sulphur compounds including methyl mercaptan (CH3 SH) in the oral cavity and is a serious problem that limits interpersonal social communication. The aim of study was to evaluate the effects of reuterin-related compounds (RRCs) on halitosis-related periodontopathic bacteria in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS RRC-01, RRC-02 and RRC-03 (32 and 64 μg ml-1 ) in culture media containing Fusobacterium nucleatum JCM8523 and Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC33277 were used. The effects of RRCs on CH3 SH production and detectable odour by F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis were examined by CH3 SH production assay and organoleptic test, respectively. The number of bacterial cells was also measured using an ATP assay. In P. gingivalis treated with RRCs, the expression of mgl gene, which is responsible for CH3 SH production, was examined by qRT-PCR. RESULTS CH3 SH production and the score of detectable odour from F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis culture media containing RRCs were significantly lower than that without RRCs (P < 0.05). The expression of mgl gene in P. gingivalis was significantly downregulated by RRC-01 (P < 0.01), but not by RRC-02 or RRC-03. CONCLUSIONS RRCs are potent oral care products for preventing halitosis via reducing CH3 SH production.

Abstract
Marked infiltration of inflammatory cells, such as activated T-cells, is observed in the progression of pulpitis; however, little is known about the mechanism of their recruitment into pulpal lesions. It has been recently demonstrated that CXC chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) chemoattracts CXC chemokine receptor 3 (CXCR3)-positive activated T-cells. We therefore examined whether CXCL10 is involved in the pathogenesis of pulpitis. CXCL10 mRNA expression levels in clinically inflamed dental pulp were higher than those in healthy dental pulp. Immunostaining results revealed that CXCL10 was detected in macrophages, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts in inflamed dental pulp, and that CXCR3 expression was observed mainly on T-cells. Moreover, cultured dental pulp fibroblasts produced CXCL10 after stimulation with live caries-related bacteria, peptidoglycans, and pro-inflammatory cytokines. In contrast, heat-killed bacteria did not induce CXCL10 secretion. These findings suggest that CXCL10-CXCR3 may play an important role in the pulpal immune response to caries-related bacterial invasion. Abstract
Candida albicans is a commonly found member of the human microflora and is a major human opportunistic fungal pathogen. A perturbation of the microbiome can lead to infectious diseases caused by various micro-organisms, including C. albicans. Moreover, the interactions between C. albicans and bacteria are considered to play critical roles in human health. The major biological feature of C. albicans, which impacts human health, resides in its ability to form biofilms. In particular, the extracellular matrix (ECM) of Candida biofilm plays a multifaceted role and therefore may be considered as a highly attractive target to combat biofilm-related infectious diseases. In addition, extracellular DNA (eDNA) also plays a crucial role in Candida biofilm formation and its structural integrity and induces the morphological transition from yeast to the hyphal growth form during C. albicans biofilm development. This review focuses on pathogenic factors such as eDNA in Candida biofilm formation and its ECM production and provides meaningful information for future studies to develop a novel strategy to battle infectious diseases elicited by Candida-formed biofilm.

Abstract
Using a 1.5 T MR imaging unit, T1- and T2-weighted images were obtained before and after i.v. administration of chondroitin sulfate iron colloid (CSIC) in order to differentiate hepatocellular carcinoma (n = 20) from adenomatous hyperplasia without atypia (n = 16). Differentiation was made from the tumor-liver contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and visual evaluation of the nodule, with reference to signal intensity relative to that of the surrounding liver. The CNR of adenomatous hyperplasia was on T1-weighted images significantly decreased after CSIC administration (p < 0.01). On T2-weighted images, there was no significant difference in CNR after CSIC administration. On the other hand, the CNR of hepatocellular carcinoma was significantly increased after CSIC administration on both T1- and T2-weighted images (p < 0.01). CSIC reflects intratumor reticuloendothelial cellular functions, and is therefore useful in differentiating hepatocellular carcinoma from adenomatous hyperplasia without atypia.

Abstract
CONTEXT Autoimmune thyroid disease is considered a multifactorial disorder in which autoimmunity against thyroid antigens is facilitated by exposure to endogenous and environmental factors. We present here a rare case of identical female twins who developed consecutively Graves' disease within a few months and had three HLA susceptibility alleles for the development of Graves' disease. SUBJECTS A 28-year-old woman was referred to our hospital complaining of thirst, sweating, palpitations, tremor and skin rash. Laboratory data showed hyperthyroidism with antibodies against the thyroid stimulating hormone receptor and ultrasonography of the thyroid revealed enlargement with hypervascularity. Her identical twin was referred to our hospital because of similar symptoms. RESULT We diagnosed them with Graves' disease and both were treated with methimazole. Human leukocyte antigen genotyping showed that both twins possessed the DRB1*04:05, DQB1*04:01:01, DPB1*05:01 haplotype, which confers susceptibility to Graves' disease. CONCLUSIONS This case supports the hypothesis that interaction of multiple human leukocyte antigen susceptibility alleles as well as genetic background and environmental factors might synergistically contribute the close timing in Graves' disease onset.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Gastric cancer develops due to atrophic gastritis induced by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. Serum levels of pepsinogen (PG) are known to be excellent markers for evaluating the degree of atrophic gastritis. We investigated whether chronic gastritis could be diagnosed by evaluating serum PG levels. METHODS A total of 4483 patients (average age, 49.7 years; 2879 men) were included in this study. Fasting serum samples were collected and anti-H. pylori antibody and PG levels were evaluated. We evaluated the endoscopic atrophy grade or histological extent of gastritis, and calculated the diagnostic capability of this serum marker. RESULTS A total of 4483 patients, were diagnosed as being positive (4160) or negative (323) for H. pylori-induced gastritis. In patients with H. pylori-induced gastritis, the PG II levels were higher and the PG I/II ratios were lower than among those without H. pylori gastritis. A cut-off values of (i) PG I/II ≤ 5; (ii) PG II ≥ 10 or PG I/II ≤ 5; (iii) PG II ≥ 12 or PG I/II ≤ 4.5 showed high sensitivity and accuracy (over 90%) for diagnosing H. pylori-induced gastritis. Moreover, in a mass screening of healthy subjects, a cut-off value of PG I/II ≤ 4.5 might be better for diagnosing the presence of gastritis because of a sensitivity and specificity > 80%. CONCLUSIONS The presence of H. pylori-induced gastritis can be evaluated using serum PG levels.

Abstract
The OPERA experiment was designed to search for ν_{μ}→ν_{τ} oscillations in appearance mode, i.e., by detecting the τ leptons produced in charged current ν_{τ} interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of the ν_{μ}→ν_{τ} appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a subsample of the data, was previously reported. In this Letter, a fifth ν_{τ} candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Together with a further reduction of the expected background, the candidate events detected so far allow us to assess the discovery of ν_{μ}→ν_{τ} oscillations in appearance mode with a significance larger than 5σ.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Whether low-volume, high-intensity, interval training (HIIT) is an adequate exercise method for improving metabolic risk factors is controversial. Moreover, it is not known if performing a short-term, low-calorie diet intervention (LCDi) after a HIIT program affects risk factors. This study investigated how an 8-week, 3 times/week exercise intervention (EXi) incorporating either HIIT or moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) followed by a 4-week LCDi affects risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-six male workers with metabolic risk factors (47.4 ± 7.1 years; cardiorespiratory capacity (VO2peak) of 28.5 ± 3.9 ml/kg/min) were randomly assigned to either the HIIT (3 sets of 3-min cycling with a 2-min active rest between sets, 180 kcal) or MICT (45 min, 360 kcal) group. After the EXi, all subjects participated in a 4-week LCDi (4 counseling sessions). During the EXi, VO2peak improved more (P < 0.05) through HIIT (25.4 ± 14.6%) than through MICT (14.9 ± 12.8%), whereas improvements in body fat and HDL cholesterol were similar. During the LCDi, some risk factors improved further (P < 0.05) without any group differences, while VO2peak in the HIIT group decreased (P < 0.05) to the same level as in the MICT group. CONCLUSION VO2peak increased more with HIIT than with MICT during the EXi despite HIIT having a lower exercise volume than MICT, but this advantage of HIIT promptly disappeared through detraining. An intervention strategy consisting of 8 weeks of either HIIT or MICT followed by a 4-week LCDi has a positive effect on metabolic risk factors. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION UMIN11352.

Abstract
In this paper, we propose a sequence labeling method by using SVM posterior probabilities with a Markov Random Field (MRF) model for colorectal Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) zoom-videoendoscope. Classifying each frame of a video sequence by SVM classifiers independently leads to an output sequence which is unstable and hard to understand by endoscopists. To make it more stable and readable, we use an MRF model to label the sequence of posterior probabilities. In addition, we introduce class asymmetry for the NBI images in order to keep and enhance frames where there is a possibility that cancers might have been detected. Experimental results with NBI video sequences demonstrate that the proposed MRF model with class asymmetry performs much better than a model without asymmetry.

Abstract
The cytoplasmic fine structures of both normal human cultured keratinocytes (NHK) and squamous cell carcinoma cells (HSC) were examined by electron microscopy using the whole-cell preparation method and stereo-viewing techniques. The presence of cytoplasmic fine network (CFN) was confirmed in both NHK and HSC, but the structures of the two were found to be radically different. In particular, the mitochondria showed a number of distinct morphological differences. The introduction of cytochalasin B and colchicine into HSC partially destroyed the CFN, and, as a result, the morphology of the HSC mitochondria changed to become similar to those of NHK. It seems that the CFN may have an important role in determining the shape of the cell organelles, such as mitochondria, and that the shape of the mitochondria may perhaps be used as an indication of cell malignancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of gastric cancer after successful Helicobacter pylori eradication has been increasing. We previously reported that epithelium with low-grade atypia (ELA) appeared on the surface of gastric cancer after H. pylori eradication. Here, we investigate the clinical and biological characteristics of such ELA. METHODS We studied 27 cases of gastric cancer detected after successful H. pylori eradication therapy. We examined the prevalence of ELA among these cases and its significance for endoscopic discovery after H. pylori eradication. We additionally investigated the mucus, p53 and Ki67 expressions in ELA. RESULTS Epithelium with low-grade atypia that continuous with the gastric tumor was detected in 22 of 27 cases (81%), a significantly greater percentage than that for controls (p < 0.01). We found that gastric-type mucin was frequently expressed in this epithelium. Neither p53- nor Ki67-positive cells were found in ELA, irrespective of their expression in tumor tissue. The presence of ELA was positively correlated with the clinical interval between H. pylori eradication and gastric cancer detection. CONCLUSIONS Epithelium with low-grade atypia on gastric cancer tissue, which may develop from gastric cancer cells, is frequently present after successful eradication therapy. This phenomenon could influence the practice of endoscopic diagnosis of gastric cancers.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of catechins on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in human dental pulp cells (HDPC) stimulated with bacteria-derived factors or pro-inflammatory cytokines. METHODOLOGY Morphologically fibroblastic cells established from explant cultures of healthy human dental pulp tissues were used as HDPC. HDPC pre-treated with catechins, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) or epicatechin gallate (ECG), were exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), peptidoglycan (PG), interlukin-1β (IL-1β) or tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). VEGF production was examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and COX-2 expression was assessed by immunoblot. RESULTS EGCG and ECG significantly reduced LPS- or PG-mediated VEGF production in the HDPC in a dose-dependent manner. EGCG also prevented IL-1β-mediated VEGF production. Although TNF-α did not enhance VEGF production in the dental pulp cells, treatment of 20 μg mL(-1) of EGCG decreased the level of VEGF. In addition, the catechins attenuated COX-2 expression induced by LPS and IL-1β. CONCLUSIONS The up-regulated VEGF and COX-2 expressions in the HDPC stimulated with these bacteria-derived factors or IL-1β were diminished by the treatment of EGCG and ECG. These findings suggest that the catechins may be beneficial as an anti-inflammatory tool of the treatment for pulpal inflammation.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of genomic DNA purified from Candida albicans and pneumonia-related pathogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, on in vitro biofilm formation and morphological change of 3 Candida species (C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. tropicalis). METHODS AND RESULTS Biofilm formation was evaluated by the crystal violet assay and colony-forming unit counts. Morphological characteristics of biofilms were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy. Addition of DNA at a low concentration (<1·0 μg ml(-1)) significantly increased biofilm mass of all three Candida species. In contrast, the addition of DNA at a high concentration (10 μg ml(-1)) decreased the biofilm mass. Interestingly, the formation of hyphae in a dense network of yeast cells was observed in C. albicans biofilms exposed to a low concentration of DNA (<1·0 μg ml(-1)). CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrated that extracellular DNA (eDNA) plays a crucial role in Candida biofilm formation and suggested that eDNA may induce the morphological transition from yeast to hyphal growth form during C. albicans biofilm development. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY A novel therapy targeting eDNA may be applicable for Candida infection to decrease biofilm formation and hyphal formation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with negative anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody titer and high pepsinogen (PG) level (group A) are regarded as having a low risk for gastric cancer. However, gastric cancer cases are occasionally observed in this group. We aimed to elucidate the clinical features of gastric neoplasm in group A patients and reviewed advanced methods for mass screening. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 271 gastric epithelial neoplasm patients were enrolled. We classified them according to the H. pylori-PG system and determined the number of patients in each group. After excluding true H. pylori-negative cases from group A (group A'), we examined the differences between group A' and group non-A. RESULTS Group A included 30 (11%) patients, and only three of these were true negative for H. pylori. All patients in group A' (n = 27) exhibited endoscopic atrophy in the gastric corpus. Serologically, these patients showed low gastrin, low PG II and high PG I/II ratio, indicative of post-eradication. Histologically, 24 (89%) of these had little inflammation, and 26 (96%) were negative for H. pylori by immunohistochemistry. No difference was observed in the incidence of metachronous gastric tumors between group A' and group non-A. The discriminant function using gastrin and PGs could distinguish these 27 patients from true H. pylori-negative controls with 85% sensitivity and 84% specificity. CONCLUSIONS Group A included a certain number of patients with atrophic gastritis who were potentially at risk of gastric neoplasm development. Although evaluation of corpus atrophy is necessary for the identification of these patients, the discriminant function may be useful.

Abstract
The effects of dumb-bell exercise (aerobic-resistance exercise) with and without low calorie diet (LCD) therapy on resting metabolic rate (RMR), diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) and body composition were studied in 12 mildly obese women aged 19-20 years. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of the following two groups: dumb-bell exercise with LCD (DEx + LCD group), and dumb-bell exercise only (DEx group). The subjects performed dumb-bell exercises with pairs of 2 kg dumb-bells every day after dinner for approximately 20 min. In the DEx + LCD group, subjects also received a liquid-formula diet based on a commercially available diet supplement, Micro Diet, for two of their three daily meals. Thus, they were restricted to approximately 4.18 MJ of energy intake per day for 12 weeks. Subjects underwent several measurements (body composition, RMR and DIT tests) before commencing the experiment and again after 12 weeks while still dieting. During the 12 week experimental period, body weight and body fat decreased significantly in both the DEx + LCD and the DEx groups without reducing fat free mass (FFM). The decreases in body weight and body fat were significantly larger in the LCD + DEx group than in the DEx group. These results suggest that dumb-bell exercise decreases body weight and body fat without reducing FFM in relation to increasing RMR and DIT. Micro Diet LCD may strengthen the effect of dumb-bell exercise on body weight and body fat, but weaken the effects on RMR and DIT.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy (CART) is intended to treat patients by ultrafiltration and reinfusion of their refractory ascites. In the CART system, bacteria and cancer cells in removed massive ascites are filtrated. Then, water is removed in the condenser, resulting in a higher protein concentration. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical usefulness of CART in the treatment of refractory massive ascites in patients with cancerous peritonitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS CART was performed 13 times in four patients with ovarian and endometrial cancer. RESULTS Autologous protein with a higher concentration was intravenously administered. The amount of aspirated and condensed ascites was 3,190 +/- 1,086 ml (975 4,500 ml) and 538 +/- 249 ml (100 - 860 ml), respectively. Condensed albumin, albumin concentration, and concentration time were 43.2 +/- 25.8 g, 8.2 +/- 3.3 g/dl, and 73.3 +/- 24.8 min (28 - 122 min), respectively. CART was effective in maintaining serum albumin concentrations, and it is possible to repeat infusion. During CART, patients performance status was 1-2 and vital signs were stable except for mild elevations in body temperature. Daily life was maintained without serious side-effects. CONCLUSIONS The use of CART for gynecological cancer patients with refractory massive ascites due to cancerous peritonitis contributes to improvements in quality of life and relief of symptoms. With autologous infusion of condensed ascites, patients can avoid infection, allergic reactions, and administration of expensive blood products.

Bowing distortion phenomena of bi-axially oriented film cause serious problems in practical application. Bowing distortion was conveniently defined to carry out the analysis. Bowing distortion profile throughout a tenter machine was observed. This profile was fairly successfully simulated by FEM using suitable anisotropic and heterogeneous elastic constant distributions, and a suitable initial shape of the elastic body. The mechanism of bowing distortion in relation with TD stretching was estimated by the above results and some experimental data. This leads to the forecast that the insertion of a cooling zone between the TD stretching zone and the thermosetting zone will be an effective way for decreasing bowing distortion of film. This forecast was experimentally verified. Despite the insertion of the cooling zone, a certain level of bowing distortion still remained. It was tried to give an explanation for the mechanism of the remaining distortion in terms of heat-shrinkage force in the thermosetting zone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Magnifying endoscopy with flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE) is clinically useful in diagnosing gastric cancer and determining treatment options; however, there is a learning curve. Accurate FICE-based diagnosis requires training and experience. In addition, objectivity is necessary. Thus, a software program that can identify gastric cancer quantitatively was developed. METHODS A bag-of-features framework with densely sampled scale-invariant feature transform descriptors to magnifying endoscopy images of 46 mucosal gastric cancers was applied. Computer-based findings were compared with histologic findings. The probability of gastric cancer was calculated by means of logistic regression, and sensitivity and specificity of the system were determined. RESULTS The average probability was 0.78 ± 0.25 for the images of cancer and 0.31 ± 0.25 for the images of noncancer tissue, with a significant difference between the two groups. An optimal cut-off point of 0.59 was determined on the basis of the receiver operating characteristic curves. The computer-aided diagnosis system yielded a detection accuracy of 85.9% (79/92), sensitivity for a diagnosis of cancer of 84.8% (39/46), and specificity of 87.0% (40/46). CONCLUSION Further development of this system will allow for quantitative evaluation of mucosal gastric cancers on magnifying gastrointestinal endoscopy images obtained with FICE.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of homologous and heterologous extracellular DNAs (eDNAs) and histone-like DNA-binding protein (HLP) on Streptococcus intermedius biofilm development and rigidity. METHODS AND RESULTS Formed biofilm mass was measured with 0·1% crystal violet staining method and observed with a scanning electron microscope. The localizations of eDNA and extracellular HLP (eHLP) in formed biofilm were detected by staining with 7-hydoxyl-9H-(1,3-dichloro-9,9-dimethylacridin-2-one) and anti-HLP antibody without fixation, respectively. DNase I treatment (200 U ml(-1)) markedly decreased biofilm formation and cell density in biofilms. Colocalization of eHLP and eDNA in biofilm was confirmed. The addition of eDNA (up to 1 μg ml(-1)) purified from Strep. intermedius, other Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, or human KB cells into the Strep. intermedius culture increased the biofilm mass of all tested strains of Strep. intermedius, wild-type, HLP-downregulated strain and control strains. In contrast, the addition of eDNA (>1 μg ml(-1)) decreased the biofilm mass of all Strep. intermedius strains. CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrated that eDNA and eHLP play crucial roles in biofilm development and its rigidity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY eDNA- and HLP-targeting strategies may be applicable to novel treatments for bacterial biofilm-related infectious diseases.

Abstract
Fallow field biotopes that develop from abandoned rice fields are man-made wetlands that provide new habitats for various aquatic animals. Although consideration of such biotopes generally focuses on their positive aspects, this study evaluated the negative aspects of establishing fallow field biotopes with regard to mosquito breeding sites. To determine whether fallow field biotopes become breeding habitats for vector mosquitoes, we evaluated mosquito fauna in fallow field biotopes and adjacent rice fields. We found larvae of Anopheles lesteri, Anopheles sinensis and Culex tritaeniorhynchus (all: Diptera: Culicidae) in the biotopes. Although abundances of mosquito larvae in the biotopes and rice fields were statistically similar, mosquito abundances in rice fields increased dramatically in August when the water level reduced after the rainy season. The abundance and variety of the mosquitoes' natural predators were greater in biotopes than in rice fields because the former are a permanent and stable aquatic environment. A generalized linear mixed model showed a negative effect of predator diversity on mosquito larvae abundance in both habitats. Although fallow field biotopes become breeding habitats for vector mosquitoes, establishing biotopes from fallow fields in order to protect various aquatic animals, including mosquito insect predators, may help to control mosquito breeding.
