Abstract
BACKGROUND Global pediatric immunization programs with pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have reduced vaccine-type pneumococcal disease, but a substantial disease burden of non-PCV serotypes remains. METHODS This phase 3, randomized (1:1), double-blind study evaluated safety and immunogenicity of 20-valent PCV (PCV20) relative to 13-valent PCV (PCV13) in healthy infants. Participants received 2 infant doses and a toddler dose of PCV20 or PCV13, with diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis combination vaccine at all doses and measles, mumps, rubella and varicella vaccines at the toddler dose. Primary pneumococcal immunogenicity objectives were to demonstrate noninferiority (NI) of PCV20 to PCV13 for immunoglobulin G geometric mean concentrations after infant and toddler doses and percentages of participants with predefined serotype-specific immunoglobulin G concentrations after infant doses. Safety endpoints included local reactions, systemic events and adverse events. RESULTS Overall, 1204 participants were vaccinated (PCV20, n = 601; PCV13, n = 603). One month after the toddler dose, 19/20 serotypes met NI for immunoglobulin G geometric mean concentrations; serotype 6B narrowly missed NI [PCV20/PCV13 geometric mean ratio: 0.57 (2-sided 95% confidence interval: 0.48-0.67); NI criterion: lower 2-sided 95% confidence interval >0.5]. Sixteen/twenty serotypes met NI for ≥1 primary objective after 2 infant doses. PCV20 induced robust opsonophagocytic activity, and boosting responses were observed for all vaccine serotypes, including those missing statistical NI. The safety/tolerability profile of PCV20 was like that of PCV13. CONCLUSIONS PCV20 3-dose series in infants was safe and elicited robust immune responses. Based on these results and PCV13 experience, PCV20 3-dose series is expected to be protective for all 20 vaccine serotypes. NCT04546425.

Abstract
Unraveling the two-dimensional (2D) structural ordering of colloidal particles assembled at a flat surface is essential for understanding and optimizing their physical properties. So far, grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) has been widely used to determine crystallographic information on 2D self-assembled structures of nanosize objects. However, solving the structure of 2D lattices consisting of micrometer (μm)-sized objects still remains a challenge using scattering methods. Here, a model 2D SCALMS (supported catalytically active liquid metal solution) template is fabricated from μm-sized polystyrene (PS) spheres that form a monolayer on top of the flat solid support. GISAXS patterns of the sample were collected for rotation angles around its surface normal in steps of 3°. For every rotation angle, different Bragg-type interference maxima along the out-of-plane (qz) direction were observed. On the basis of simulations of GISXAS patterns of single domains of ordered particle arrangements using the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) and validation against a simple geometrical scattering model, the interference maxima could nicely be interpreted to originate from a monolayer of the μm-sized spherical particles which are arranged in domains of hexagonal 2D paracrystalline order. This novel GISAXS evaluation technique serves as a proof of principle for determining the μm-size periodicity of 2D crystalline domains and demonstrates its potential to spatially resolve the relative orientations of such domains with respect to a reference direction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Group A streptococci (GAS) are a major cause of pharyngitis in children. Recently, there were severe GAS outbreaks. The aims of this study were to assess pharyngeal colonization prevalence in healthy children, to assess different diagnostic definitions for GAS pharyngitis and to estimate incidence rates for these infections. METHODS A 2-year longitudinal study was conducted in healthy children in the United States. Pharyngeal swabs were cultured every 3 months for GAS colonization. Serum antistreptolysin O, antideoxyribonuclease B (DNaseB) and antistreptococcal C5a peptidase (SCP) antibody titers were assessed at baseline. When participants developed a sore throat, pharyngeal swabs were collected for rapid antigen detection test (RADT) and culture, and antibody titers were determined in serum samples. A range of case definitions were used for GAS pharyngitis. RESULTS A total of 422 children 3-12 years old were enrolled (140, 141 and 141 were 3-5, 6-9 and 10-12 years of age, respectively). The overall prevalence of GAS colonization during the study was 48%. Baseline antistreptolysin O, anti-DNaseB and anti-SCP antibody titers were higher for children older than 5 years. The incidence of GAS pharyngitis per 100 person-years was 15.9 for RADT/culture-proven and 4.6 for serologically confirmed pharyngitis. CONCLUSIONS GAS throat colonization and pharyngitis were frequent in children 3-12 years old. The case definition employed impacted the measured incidence of GAS pharyngitis, with higher rates detected using RADT/culture-based definitions. These data suggest that case definition is important and that young children are exposed to GAS, which may inform plans for vaccine development and implementation.

Abstract
Expanding serotype coverage of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) to target prevailing disease-causing serotypes could further reduce disease burden. To address this need, 2 different PCVs have been investigated: a 20-valent PCV (PCV20; includes the 13 serotypes in the 13-valent PCV [PCV13] plus 7 additional serotypes [8, 10A, 11A, 12F, 15B, 22F, 33F]) and a complementary 7-valent PCV (cPCV7; contains only the 7 additional serotypes). This phase 1b, randomized, controlled, double-blind study evaluated PCV20 and cPCV7 safety and immunogenicity in healthy Japanese adults 18–49 years of age residing in the United States for ≤5 years. Participants (n = 104) were randomized equally to receive a single dose of PCV20, cPCV7, or PCV13. Immunogenicity was assessed at baseline and 1 month after vaccination using serotype-specific opsonophagocytic activity (OPA) titers and serotype-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations. Prompted local reactions and systemic events; adverse events (AEs); and serious AEs and newly diagnosed chronic disease were assessed 14 days, through 1 month, and upto 6 months following vaccination, respectively. OPA immune responses were robust for all 20 serotypes in the PCV20 group and for the 7 serotypes in the cPCV7 group 1 month after vaccination. IgG immune response showed similar trends. Injection site pain and muscle pain were the most common local reaction and systemic event; the majority were mild or moderate in severity. Few AEs and no severe AEs, serious AEs, or safety-related withdrawals were reported. Taken together, administration of PCV20 or cPCV7 in Japanese adults was well tolerated and induced robust serotype-specific functional immune responses. NCT03642847.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Assess Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) colonization in healthy Australian adults receiving an investigational S. aureus 3-antigen vaccine (SA3Ag). METHODS In this phase 1, double-blind, sponsor-unblinded study, participants were randomized to receive a single dose (1 of 3 dose levels) of SA3Ag or placebo and a booster dose or placebo at 6 months. S. aureus isolates from nasal, perineal, and oropharyngeal swabs before and through 12 months post-vaccination were identified. RESULTS Baseline S. aureus colonization prevalence was 30.6% (any site), with nasal carriage (27.0%) more common than oropharyngeal/perineal (3.2% each). Following initial vaccination (low-dose: 102; mid-dose: 101; high-dose: 101; placebo: 102) and booster (low-dose: 45; mid-dose: 44; high-dose: 27; placebo: 181), placebo and SA3Ag groups showed similar S. aureus carriage through 12 months. Most colonized participants (74.0%) were colonized by single spa types. Placebo and SA3Ag groups had similar persistence of colonization, with 19.6-30.7% due to single spa types. Acquisition was observed in mid- and high-dose recipients (∼20%) and low-dose and placebo recipients (∼12%). Vaccination resulted in substantial increases in antibodies to all 3 antigens, irrespective of carriage status. CONCLUSIONS Based on descriptive analyses of this small study, SA3Ag vaccination did not impact S. aureus acquisition or carriage. Carriage status did not impact antibody responses to SA3Ag.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a major global cause of nosocomial and community-acquired infections. Despite potentially severe or fatal complications and frequent recurrence, no preventive vaccine is currently available. This randomized, observer-blinded, placebo-controlled phase 1 study in older Japanese adults evaluated safety and immunogenicity of an investigational C difficile vaccine containing a mixture of genetically detoxified and chemically inactivated toxoids, A and B. METHODS Healthy Japanese adults aged 65 to 85 years were randomized in a 3:3:2 ratio to receive 100 or 200 μg of C difficile vaccine or placebo, respectively, at 0, 1, and 6 months (month regimen) or 1, 8, and 30 days (day regimen). The primary objective was safety evaluation. Vaccine immunogenicity, the secondary objective, was determined by assessing toxin A- and toxin B-specific neutralizing antibody levels in human sera. RESULTS Local reactions were reported by up to 33.3% of subjects per dose in the month regimen; percentages were generally higher in the 200-μg group. Such reactions were all mild or moderate in severity and generally transient. No adverse events in the month regimen led to subject withdrawal, and no serious adverse events were considered vaccine related. Further enrollment and dosing in the day regimen were discontinued after 3 subjects in the 100-μg group reported severe redness after dose 2. In the month regimen study arm, immune responses as measured by toxin-neutralizing antibody geometric mean concentrations, geometric mean fold rises, and proportions of subjects achieving prespecified fold rises were generally higher in the 200-μg group, peaked at month 7, and remained elevated at month 12. CONCLUSIONS The C difficile vaccine candidate was safe, well tolerated, and immunogenic when administered to healthy older Japanese adults at 0, 1, and 6 months. Abstract
Despite the success of vaccines in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with infectious diseases, many infectious diseases, both newly emerging and well known, lack vaccines. The global capability for beginning-to-end vaccine development has become limited, primarily owing to a scarcity of human capital necessary to guide the development of novel vaccines from the laboratory to the marketplace. Here, we identify and discuss the gaps in human capital necessary for robust vaccine development and make recommendations to begin to address these deficiencies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obese children and adolescents often exhibit progressively declining motor skills. To support young obese patients adequately, it is necessary to assess their individual physical and motor abilities, taking the degree of obesity into account. PATIENTS A total of 5 924 children and adolescents (mean age: 12.7±2.5 years, range 6.0-18.0 years, 3 195 girls) were examined in a standardised multicentre evaluation survey (APV). Fitness parameters were correlated with age- and gender-specific BMI-SDS (Standard Deviation Score) Methods: Anthropometric data were collected and patients performed the modified Munich fitness test (mMFT: maximal power, coordination, trunk flexibility) and a 6-min walk-test (aerobic endurance capacity). RESULTS 33% of patients were extremely obese (BMI>99.5th percentile). Mean BMI-SDS was + 2.32±0.53 (♀-Δ=+ 0.06; p<0.001). The data indicated significant negative correlations between BMI-SDS and selected components of motor performance, especially maximal power (r=- 0,134), and particularly aerobic endurance capacity (r=- 0,214; all p<0.001). Motor performance was significantly below average (n=27 473, 6-18 years), especially among extremely obese patients. Performance in all motor tasks was lower in girls compared to boys, except for trunk flexibility (p<0.001). CONCLUSION Correlations were found between BMI-SDS and motor performance. Extremely obese patients and obese girls showed the most pronounced motor deficits. These results emphasize the importance of standardized evaluation of individual motor performance in children and adolescents with obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of healthcare-acquired morbidity and mortality and increased healthcare resource utilization. A prophylactic vaccine is being developed that may reduce this disease burden. METHODS Volunteers in good general health aged 50-85 (n=312) and 18-24 (n=96) years were randomized to receive a single intramuscular dose of one of three dose levels of a non-adjuvanted, 3-antigen S. aureus vaccine (SA3Ag) or placebo. SA3Ag antigens included capsular polysaccharides 5 and 8 (CP5 and CP8), each conjugated to cross-reactive material 197 (CRM197), and recombinant clumping factor A (ClfA). Safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity were evaluated. RESULTS At day 29 post-vaccination, robust immune responses were observed in both age cohorts at all three SA3Ag dose levels. In the primary analysis population, the 50- to 85-year age stratum, geometric mean-fold-rises in competitive Luminex(®) immunoassay antibody titers from baseline ranged from 29.2 to 83.7 (CP5), 14.1 to 31.0 (CP8), and 37.1 to 42.9 (ClfA), all (P<0.001) exceeding the pre-defined two-fold rise criteria. Similar rises in opsonophagocytic activity assay titers demonstrated functionality of the immune response. Most injection-site reactions were mild in severity and there were no substantial differences (SA3Ag vs. placebo) with regard to systemic or adverse events. CONCLUSIONS In this study of healthy adults aged 50-85 and 18-24 years, SA3Ag elicited a rapid and robust immune response and was well tolerated, with no notable safety concerns.

Abstract
Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of a serotype-specific urinary antigen detection multiplex assay for identification of 13 pneumococcal serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F and 23F) in urine of patients with community-acquired pneumonia. Adult patients with clinical suspicion of community-acquired pneumonia were included. In addition to standard diagnostic procedures, a urine sample was collected to perform the urinary antigen detection test. Demographic, clinical, radiological and microbiological data were collected. Among 1095 community-acquired pneumonia patients Streptococcus pneumoniae was identified as causative pathogen in 257 (23%), when using conventional diagnostic methods and in 357 (33%) when urinary antigen detection was added. Of the 49 bacteraemic episodes caused by one of the 13 serotypes covered by the urinary antigen detection, 48 were detected by the urinary antigen detection, indicating a sensitivity of 98%. Of the 77 community-acquired pneumonia episodes with a "non-urinary antigen detection" causative pathogen, none had a positive urinary antigen detection result, indicating a specificity of 100%. Addition of the urinary antigen detection test to conventional diagnostic methods increased the prevalence of S. pneumoniae community-acquired pneumonia by 39%. Using bacteraemic episodes as reference sensitivity and specificity of the urinary antigen detection was 98% and 100%, respectively.

Abstract
Synchrotron based combined in situ x-ray diffractometry and reflectometry is used to investigate the role of vacancies for the relaxation of residual stress in thin metallic Pt films. From the experimentally determined relative changes of the lattice parameter a and of the film thickness L the modification of vacancy concentration and residual strain was derived as a function of annealing time at 130 °C. The results indicate that relaxation of strain resulting from compressive stress is accompanied by the creation of vacancies at the free film surface. This proves experimentally the postulated dominant role of vacancies for stress relaxation in thin metal films close to room temperature.

Abstract
A randomised, open-label study compared the immunogenicity and safety of 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) and meningococcal C conjugate vaccine (MnCC vaccine) administered concomitantly and individually. Infants received PCV7+MnCC vaccine (n=265), PCV7 alone (n=268) or MnCC vaccine alone (n=178). PCV7 was administered at 2, 3½, 6 and 12 months, and MnCC vaccine at 2, 6 and 12 months. For the 7 pneumococcal serotypes tested (4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F and 23F), proportions of subjects with pneumococcal serotype-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody concentrations ≥0.35 μg/mL post-infant series were non-inferior for the PCV7+MnCC vaccine (91.5-99.6%) and PCV7 (89.0-99.6%) groups. Proportions of subjects achieving serogroup C meningococcal serum bactericidal assay titres ≥1:8 post-infant series were non-inferior for the PCV7+MnCC vaccine (99.6%) and MnCC vaccine groups (98.8%). Pneumococcal IgG antibody levels were similar in the PCV7+MnCC vaccine and PCV7 groups at each time point. Post-infant and post-toddler meningococcus C serum bactericidal assay titres and IgG levels were similar in the PCV7+MnCC vaccine and MnCC groups, although pre-toddler, the levels were lower in the PCV7+MnCC vaccine group than the MnCC vaccine group. Immune response rates to diphtheria antigen approached 100% for all vaccine groups. Local reactions were mostly similar among the treatment groups. The MnCC vaccine group had lower rates of some systemic events than the PCV7+MnCC vaccine group. Immune responses to PCV7+MnCC vaccine were non-inferior compared with those seen with each vaccine administered alone.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of a supervised exercise training program performed during an in patient rehabilitation course on various attributes of health-related fitness, e.g., flexibility, balance and coordination. 286 patients with CF, age range 6-18 years (11.8 +/- 3.4 years), mean forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1 82.7 +/- 22.3% predicted) were included. Patients performed the modified Munich fitness test (mMFT) to assess flexibility, balance, strength and coordination. To assess aerobic capacity a 6-min walk-test (6MWT) was performed. In addition, some of the patients performed an incremental exercise test on a bicycle ergometer using the Godfrey protocol before and after the exercise training program. The supervised training program consisted of 4-6 weeks of different sports activities 5 times per week. After training, pulmonary function showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase. All test items of the mMFT improved significantly (P < 0.05). Compared to healthy children test scores achieved from children with CF in the mMFT were lower but within a normal range. Our children with CF had a lower walk distance in 6MWT (P < 0.05) compared to healthy. Our findings clearly demonstrated benefits of a systematic exercise training program on components of physical fitness in patients with CF, with improvements of test-tasks to predicted normal in some cases. The results from our study suggested that an exercise training program in CF should be focused on several aspects of physical fitness including all components of physical fitness, e.g. aerobic endurance, flexibility, balance and motor skills.

Abstract
In a Phase 1 study, 15 healthy subjects were randomized to receive a 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) and 15 to receive a 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (23vPS). Antibody responses were measured immediately before and approximately one month after vaccination. Serotype-specific antibodies were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for immunoglobulin G (IgG) and an opsonophagocytic assay (OPA) for functional antibodies. PCV13 was as immunogenic or more immunogenic than 23vPS and was well tolerated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV; FluMist) is a trivalent vaccine containing cold-adapted influenza vaccine viruses that infect and replicate in cells lining the nasopharynx to induce immunity. Recovery of viruses (shedding) is measured by culture of nasal specimens. Shedding of vaccine viruses is not equated with transmission because transmission requires more virus than is detected in many nasal swabs. Previous studies with LAIV did not detect transmission to close contacts. The primary objective of this study was to estimate the probability of transmission to placebo contacts in a day care setting. METHODS One hundred ninety-seven healthy children aged 9 to 36 months attending day care were randomized to receive vaccine or placebo. Postvaccination viral shedding, safety, genotype and phenotype of shed viruses and probability of transmission were assessed. RESULTS Eighty percent of 98 vaccine recipients shed at least one vaccine strain. No clinically significant differences in solicited adverse events attributable to vaccine occurred; safety profiles were similar in both groups. Vaccine virus isolates retained their phenotypic characteristics (cold adaptation and temperature sensitivity) and did not revert at nucleotides known to confer an attenuating phenotype. There was one confirmed transmission of a vaccine strain to a single placebo recipient. According to the Reed-Frost model, the calculated probability of transmission to a child after contact with a single vaccinated child was 0.58% (95% confidence interval, 0-1.7%). There was no increased reactogenicity or other safety concerns in the recipient child. CONCLUSIONS Young children in a day care setting had a high rate of shedding and a low rate of transmission. No clinically significant illness occurred among children who received vaccine or placebo or in the child to whom the vaccine virus was transmitted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hip fracture is a major medical problem among older adults, leading to impaired balance and gait and loss of functional independence. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of and risk factors for falls 6 months following hospital discharge for a fall-related hip fracture in older adults. SUBJECTS Ninety of 100 community-dwelling older adults (> or =65 years of age) hospitalized for a fall-related hip fracture provided data for this study. METHODS An observational cohort study used interviews and medical records to obtain information on demographics, prefracture health, falls, and functional status. Self-report of falls and performance-based measures of balance and mobility were completed 6 months after discharge. RESULTS A total of 53.3% of patients (48/90) reported 1 or more falls in the 6 months after hospitalization. Older adults who fell following discharge had greater declines in independence in activities of daily living and lower performance on balance and mobility measures. Prefracture fall history and use of a gait device predicted postdischarge falls. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Falls following hip fracture can be predicted by premorbid functional status.

Abstract
Recent evidence shows that event-related (upper) alpha desynchronization (ERD) is related to cognitive performance. Several studies observed a positive, some a negative relationship. The latter finding, interpreted in terms of the neural efficiency hypothesis, suggests that good performance is associated with a more 'efficient', smaller extent of cortical activation. Other studies found that ERD increases with semantic processing demands and that this increase is larger for good performers. Studies supporting the neural efficiency hypothesis used tasks that do not specifically require semantic processing. Thus, we assume that the lack of semantic processing demands may at least in part be responsible for the reduced ERD. In the present study we measured ERD during a difficult verbal-semantic task. The findings demonstrate that during semantic processing, more intelligent (as compared to less intelligent) subjects exhibited a significantly larger upper alpha ERD over the left hemisphere. We conclude that more intelligent subjects exhibit a more extensive activation in a semantic processing system and suggest that divergent findings regarding the neural efficiency hypotheses are due to task specific differences in semantic processing demands.

Abstract
Recent studies suggest that human theta oscillations appear to be functionally associated with memory processes. It is less clear, however, to what type of memory sub-processes theta is related. Using a continuous word recognition task with different repetition lags, we investigate whether theta reflects the strength of an episodic memory trace or general processing demands, such as task difficulty. The results favor the episodic trace decay hypothesis and show that during the access of an episodic trace in a time window of approximately 200-400 ms, theta power decreases with increasing lag (between the first and second presentation of an item). LORETA source localization of this early theta lag effect indicates that parietal regions are involved in episodic trace processing, whereas right frontal regions may guide the process of retrieval. We conclude that episodic encoding can be characterized by two different stages: traces are first processed at parietal sites at approximately 300 ms, then further processing takes place in regions of the medial temporal lobe at approximately 500 ms. Only the first stage is related to theta, whereas the second is reflected by a slow wave with a frequency of approximately 2.5 Hz.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recombination technology can be used to create live attenuated respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines that contain combinations of known attenuating mutations. METHODS Two live attenuated, recombinantly derived RSV vaccine candidates, rA2cp248/404 Delta SH and rA2cp248/404/1030 Delta SH, were evaluated in 31 adults and in 95 children >/=6 months old. rA2cp248/404/1030 Delta SH was subsequently evaluated in 44 infants 1-2 months old. These vaccine candidates share 4 attenuating genetic elements and differ only in a missense mutation (1030) in the polymerase gene. RESULTS Both vaccines were highly attenuated in adults and RSV-seropositive children and were well tolerated and immunogenic in RSV-seronegative children. Compared with that of rA2cp248/404 Delta SH, replication of rA2cp248/404/1030 Delta SH was restricted in RSV-seronegative children (mean peak titer, 10(4.3) vs. 10(2.5) plaque-forming units [pfu]/mL), indicating that the 1030 mutation had a potent attenuating effect. Although rA2cp248/404/1030 Delta SH was well tolerated in infants, only 44% of infants who received two 10(5.3)-pfu doses of vaccine had detectable antibody responses. However, replication after administration of the second dose was highly restricted, indicating that protective immunity was induced. At least 4 of 5 attenuating genetic elements were retained in recovered vaccine viruses. CONCLUSIONS rA2cp248/404/1030 Delta SH is the first RSV vaccine candidate to be sufficiently attenuated in young infants. Additional studies are needed to determine whether rA2cp248/404/1030 Delta SH can induce protective immunity against wild-type RSV.

Abstract
We evaluated a combination respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza 3 virus (PIV3) live, attenuated intranasal vaccine for safety, viral replication, and immunogenicity in doubly seronegative children 6-18 months old. RSV cpts-248/404 and PIV3-cp45 vaccines were combined in a dose of 10(5) plaque-forming units of each per 0.5-mL dose and compared with monovalent vaccines or placebo. The virus shedding pattern of RSV was not different between monovalent RSV cpts-248/404 vaccine and combination vaccine. Modest reductions in the shedding of PIV3-cp45 vaccine virus were found after the administration of RSV cpts-248/404 and PIV3-cp45 vaccine, relative to monovalent PIV3 vaccine; 16 (76%) of 21 children given combination vaccine shed PIV3-cp45 versus 11 (92%) of 12 of those given monovalent PIV3 vaccine. Both vaccines were immunogenic, and antibody responses were similar between the monovalent groups and the combination group. Combined RSV/PV3 vaccine is feasible for simultaneous administration, and further studies are warranted.

Abstract
Serum antibody titers against the A/Panama/2007/99(H3N2) and A/Fujian/411/2002(H3N2)-like viruses were determined in children 6-35 months of age who received either 1 dose of the inactivated influenza vaccine or the live attenuated influenza vaccine containing the A/Panama strain. Results indicated that the live vaccine induced higher antibody responses than the inactivated vaccine against the A/Panama and A/Fujian-like viruses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have shown an association between vaccination with the rotavirus vaccine and the development of intussusception. We evaluated the plausibility of a causal association between natural rotavirus infection and intussusception. METHODS We performed ultrasound measurements, in infants with confirmed rotavirus infection and in healthy control subjects, of the ileum wall thickness and mesenteric lymph nodes, at enrollment and 1 month later. RESULTS Thirteen pairs of patients with rotavirus infection and control subjects were enrolled. The mean distal ileum wall thickness at the first examination was 3.0 mm in patients with rotavirus infection and 2.0 mm in control subjects (P = .037). The maximum lymph node size in patients with rotavirus infection was 11.6 mm at the first examination and 7.4 mm at the second examination (P = .017). Nodal aggregates and free fluid were also observed more commonly among patients with rotavirus infection (54% vs. 9%; P = .033 for both). CONCLUSION Rotavirus infection was associated with increased distal ileum wall thickness and lymphadenopathy during the illness period. These changes suggest a plausible mechanism by which rotavirus infection could cause intussusception.

• Growth and heavy metal (Zn and Cd) hyperaccumulation were investigated in metallicolous and nonmetallicolous Mediterranean populations of Thlaspi caerulescens (Brassicaceae), and in offspring from controlled crosses between these populations. • Seeds for the growth and crossing experiments were collected from a number of sites varying in heavy metal contamination. Tissue Zn and Cd content was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. • Offspring from crosses between nonmetallicolous populations had the highest Zn concentration (c. 30 000 µg g-1 ), compared with 20 000 µg g-1 for the nonmetallicolous parents. The metallicolous parents and the other crosses had only 10 000 µg g-1 . Offspring from crosses including a nonmetallicolous parent still had a significantly higher Zn uptake than the metallicolous parents. A trend towards a higher Cd uptake was observed in offspring from crosses with a metallicolous parent. • We suggest that the most probable hypothesis is that the differences in Zn hyperaccumulation between crosses could be explained by a monogenic system with two alleles. The dominant allele would restrict Zn hyperaccumulation at 10 000 µg g-1 whereas the recessive allele would be responsible for a two to three-fold increase in Zn hyperaccumulation. Alternatively, the existence of modifier genes could explain the differences between offspring from crosses between nonmetallicolous populations and their respective field parents. The results suggest that plant breeding applied to this species could help to improve Zn phytoextraction.

Abstract
The exchange of information between the working and long-term memory system (WMS and LTMS) was investigated. We analyzed evoked theta and upper alpha desynchronization in a special memory task, designed to study the transfer of information between both memory systems. The results show that during attempts to retrieve information from the LTMS, evoked theta oscillations spread from anterior to posterior recording sites. When information actually is retrieved, the direction reverses and theta spreads to frontal sites. This time point--when direction reverses--varies between subjects to a large extent but is significantly correlated with memory performance and the onset of upper alpha desynchronization. We conclude that this phenomenon reflects the transfer of information between the WMS and LTMS

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laser acupuncture, a painless technique, is a widely used alternative treatment method for childhood asthma, although its efficacy has not been proved in controlled clinical studies. METHODS A double blind, placebo controlled, crossover study was performed to investigate the possible protective effect of a single laser acupuncture treatment on cold dry air hyperventilation induced bronchoconstriction in 44 children and adolescents of mean age 11.9 years (range 7.5-16.7) with exercise induced asthma. Laser acupuncture was performed on real and placebo points in random order on two consecutive days. Lung function was measured before laser acupuncture, immediately after laser acupuncture (just before cold dry air challenge (CACh)), and 3 and 15 minutes after CACh. CACh consisted of a 4 minute isocapnic hyperventilation of -10 degrees C absolute dry air. RESULTS Comparison of real acupuncture with placebo acupuncture showed no significant differences in the mean maximum CACh induced decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (27.2 (18.2)% v 23.8 (16.2)%) and maximal expiratory flow at 25% remaining vital capacity (51.6 (20.8)% v 44.4 (22.3)%). CONCLUSIONS A single laser acupuncture treatment offers no protection against exercise induced bronchoconstriction in paediatric and adolescent patients.

Abstract
The neural correlates of conscious awareness during successful memory retrieval were examined. In a recognition test, subjects indicated whether they consciously recalled the event in which a word was earlier presented (Remembering), or whether they recognized it on the basis that it was familiar in the absence of recollection (Knowing). An early EEG synchronization in the theta band predicted knowing, and a later remembering. Moreover, early and late event-related potentials were also found to predict knowing and remembering, respectively. The results indicate that the temporal dynamics of theta synchronization are related to the particular conscious experiences associated with memory retrieval.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tonic and phasic (event-related) theta band power changes were analyzed in a sample of 8 dyslexic and 8 control children. Previous research with healthy subjects suggests that electroencephalograph (EEG) theta activity reflects the encoding of new information into working memory. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the processing deficits of dyslexics are related to a reduced phasic theta response during reading. METHOD The EEG was recorded while subjects were reading numbers, words and pseudowords and analyzed in a lower and upper theta band (4--8 Hz). A phasic response is measured in terms of an increase in event related band power during reading with respect to a reference interval. Tonic power is measured in terms of (log) band power during a reference interval. RESULTS Large group differences in tonic and phasic lower theta were found for occipital sites where dyslexics show a complete lack of pseudoword processing. For words, only controls show a highly selective left hemispheric processing advantage. CONCLUSIONS Dyslexics have a lack to encode pseudowords in visual working memory with a concomitant lack of frontal processing selectivity. The upper theta band shows a different pattern of results which can be best interpreted to reflect the effort during the encoding process.
