Measurements of All-Particle Energy Spectrum and Mean Logarithmic Mass of Cosmic Rays from 0.3 to 30 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:131002. [PMID: 38613275 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.132.131002] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/13/2023] [Revised: 01/23/2024] [Accepted: 02/12/2024] [Indexed: 04/14/2024]
Abstract
We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at 3.67±0.05±0.15 PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -2.7413±0.0004±0.0050, while above the knee, it is -3.128±0.005±0.027, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -0.1200±0.0003±0.0341. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components.

Measurement of Ultra-High-Energy Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission of the Galactic Plane from 10 TeV to 1 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:151001. Abstract
The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this Letter, we report the measurements of diffuse γ rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner (15°10 TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of -2.99±0.04, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of ∼3 than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of -2.99±0.07 is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for 10≲E≲60 TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The LHAASO measurements imply that either additional emission sources exist or cosmic ray intensities have spatial variations.

Abstract
We retrospectively analyzed a rare case of giant pleural tuberculoma. The patient was a female, 62 years old, admitted to hospital for intermittent fever and hemoptysis. The CT scan of the chest and abdomen showed a mass in the right thoracic cavity, and the uneven surface of the bilateral fallopian tubes. Routine blood tests showed a decrease in platelets, white blood cells, and hemoglobin. The mass in the chest was finally confirmed as a tuberculoma by biopsy. The patient was diagnosed with tuberculosis more than 9 years ago and had been treated with anti-tuberculosis drugs for more than 9 years, which caused damage to the liver, bone marrow and other organs, and led to the drug-resistant tuberculosis, making diagnosis and treatment more complex.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the risk factors of microvascular invasion (MVI) in China liver cancer staging system stage Ⅰa (CNLC Ⅰa) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and develop a nomogram for predicting MVI based on clinical and radiographic data. Methods: This retrospective study focused on CNLC Ⅰa HCC patients who underwent radical resection at the Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from January 2016 to December 2020. Patients' clinical characteristics and laboratory test results and pre-surgery gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging results were collected. The clinical and radiographic risk factors for MVI were identified by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses and used for the construction of the predictive nomogram. The nomogram model was then internally validated, and its performance was assessed. Results: A total of 104 patients were divided into the MVI-positive group (n=28) and the MVI-negative group (n=76). Multivariate logistic regression analysis at the P<0.1 level identified serum alpha-ferroprotein >7 ng/ml, total bilirubin >21 μmol/L, prothrombin time >12.5 s, non-smooth margin, and incomplete or absent capsule as risk factors of MVI, based on which a nomogram model was built. The model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.867 (95% confidence interval, 0.791-0.944) in the internal validation. The sensitivity and specificity of the nomogram model were 0.786 and 0.829, respectively, with the prediction curve nearly overlapping the ideal curve. Based on the Hosmer-Lemeshow test, the predicted and real results were not significantly different (P=0.956). Conclusions: The probability of MVI of CNLC Ⅰa HCC can be objectively predicted by the monogram model that quantifies the clinical and radiographic risk factors. The model can also help clinicians select individualized surgical plans to improve the long-term prognosis of patients.

Abstract
Some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a tera-electron volt (TeV) afterglow, but the early onset of this has not been observed. We report observations with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory of the bright GRB 221009A, which serendipitously occurred within the instrument field of view. More than 64,000 photons >0.2 TeV were detected within the first 3000 seconds. The TeV flux began several minutes after the GRB trigger, then rose to a peak about 10 seconds later. This was followed by a decay phase, which became more rapid ~650 seconds after the peak. We interpret the emission using a model of a relativistic jet with half-opening angle ~0.8°. This is consistent with the core of a structured jet and could explain the high isotropic energy of this GRB.

Abstract
The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 10^{5} and 10^{9} GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Abstract
To investigate the associations between gene polymorphisms of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and liver cirrhosis (LC) after hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A case-control study was conducted in 243 patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis (HBV-LC, case group) and 486 HBV-infected subjects without LC (non-LC, control group) collected from January 2018 to September 2020 at the Changsha Central Hospital Affiliated to Nanhua University. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of STAT3 gene, including rs4796793C>G, rs2293152C>G, and rs1053004T>C were selected through literature and biological information database, and the genotypes were detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (RFQ-PCR). The distribution differences of STAT3 SNPs genotypes between the two groups were compared using Chi-square test and haplotype analysis was conducted by Shesis online. The proportion of HBV C genotype in HBV-LC patients was significantly higher than that in the control group (80.91% vs. 70.79%, χ2=7.109, P=0.008), while the logarithm of ALT was significantly lower than that of the control group (1.78±0.43 vs. 1.95±0.54, t=3.801, P=0.000). The genotypes distributions of rs4796793, rs2293152, and rs1053004 were not significantly different between HBV-LC and non-LC in overall analysis and stratified analysis by gender (χ²=2.610, 1.505, 0.586, 2.653, 2.685, 1.583, 0.351, 5.388, 0.339, respectively, P>0.05 for each). Among the subjects infected with HBV genotype C, rs1053004 CC (vs. TT) significantly increased the risk of HBV-LC [odds ratio (OR) = 1.40, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03-1.91]. Among the HBV-infected subjects with HBeAg negative, rs4796793 GG genotype (vs. CC) and G allele (vs. C) significantly increased the risks of HBV-LC (OR = 2.17, 95%CI: 1.11-4.23; OR = 1.45, 95%CI: 1.06-1.97, respectively). Haplotypes analysis showed that the frequency of haplotype C-G-T composed of rs4796793, rs2293152, and rs1053004 was significantly lower in HBV-LC than that in the control group (non-LC) (27.3% vs. 35.6%, χ²=9.949, P = 0.001). The correlation between STAT3 and HBV-LC is different in HBV-infected subjects with different infection status. The HBV-infected subjects carrying haplotype rs4796793C-rs2293152G-rs1053004T of STAT3 gene have significantly decreased risk of LC.

Abstract
Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy scale are derived. Our results show that the first-order LIV energy scale should be higher than about 10^{5} times the Planck scale M_{Pl} and that the second-order LIV scale is >10^{-3}M_{Pl}. Both limits improve by at least one order of magnitude the previous results.

Abstract
To explore the correlation between the changes of the intestinal flora of newly treated pulmonary tuberculosis patients and the immune indicators of the body, and to provide a reference for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. A single-center and case-control study was adopted. From October 2020 to April 2021, 43 patients with newly diagnosed tuberculosis in the Department of Tuberculosis, Affiliated Changsha Central Hospital,University of South China were selected as the control group. 43 cases of newly treated pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), 43 healthy control (HC) during the same period, collected fresh feces and whole blood of subjects, and used Illumina Hiseq high-throughput sequencing technology to analyze 16S of all microorganisms in feces The V4 region of rRNA was amplified and sequenced, and the structure of the intestinal flora was analyzed by QIIME software. Use flow cytometry to determine the subject's immune indicators (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD4+CD25+CD127-Treg, CD14+CD16+, CD14+CD16-), and analyze the changes in intestinal flora and immune function in newly treated pulmonary tuberculosis patients Inherent connection. The χ² test, t test, and Wilcox rank sum test were used to analyze the differences in age, gender, α diversity, and relative abundance of the two groups of people. Compared with the HC group, the alpha diversity of the intestinal flora in the PTB group decreased (shannon index: t=3.906, P=0.000 2; simpson index: Z=553, P=0.004 7; chao1 index: t=5.395, P=0.000 0). β diversity analysis showed that there were significant differences in the structure of the intestinal flora between the two groups (P=0.000). Species difference analysis showed that at the phylum level, the relative abundance of Firmicutes in the PTB group was significantly lower than that in the HC group (Z=486.0, P=0.000 5). At the genus level, there are 15 different bacterial genera between the two groups. In the PTB group, bifidobacterium, enterococcus, lactobacillus, anaerostipes, the relative abundance of the above 5 genera of veillonella is higher than that of the HC group (P<0.05); Butyricimonas, clostridium, and broutella (blautia), coprococcus, dorea, lachnospira, roseburia, faecalibacterium, ruminococcus, the relative abundance of 10 bacterial genera including dialister was lower than that of the HC group (P<0.05). Comparison of immune indexes between groups showed that CD14+CD16+monocytes (%) in the PTB group were higher than those in the HC group (t=2.456, P=0.001 6<0.05), while CD14+CD16-monocytes (%) were lower than HC (t=-4.368, P=0.000<0.05), while the differences in CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD4+/CD8+and Treg (CD4+CD25+CD127-) were not statistically significant (P>0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that Firmicutes in the PTB group was negatively correlated with CD4+/CD8+, CD14+CD16+(r=-0.218, P=0.048; r=-0.245, P=0.025), and positively correlated with CD14+CD16-Correlation (r=0.250, P=0.022); At the genus level, Faecalis is positively correlated with CD4+/CD8+and CD4+(r=0.250, P=0.023; r=0.258, P=0.019); Rosella and CD3+, CD8+and CD14+CD16-are positively correlated (r=0.27, P=0.024; r=0.219, P=0.046; r=0.027, P=0.039), and negatively correlated with CD14+CD16+(r=-0.280, P= 0.01). Changes in the structure of the intestinal flora of newly treated pulmonary tuberculosis patients may be one of the influencing factors of the immune function of the body. Targeted optimization of the structure of the intestinal flora and improvement of the body's immunity may be used as an effective auxiliary treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract
Thin-film composite (TFC) membranes are attracting wide attention because their ultrathin selective layer usually corresponds to the higher membrane flux for pervaporation. However, the direct preparation of the TFC membranes on ceramic substrates confronted with the great difficulties because the larger pores on ceramic substrate surfaces are detrimental to the formation of an intact polyamide (PA) selective layer produced by interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. Here, the integrated ZIF-L nanosheets were proposed to be used as an assistance interlayer for the first time to eliminate the existence of the pores of the ceramic support, and provides a better basis for the formation of an intact PA selective layer by IP reaction between TMC and ethylenediamine (EDA). The experimental data obtained in pervaporation (PV) show that the increased flux from 1.1 to 2.9 kg/m2h corresponds to the decreased separation factor from 396 to 110 when the feed concentration of ethanol decreases from 95 wt % to 80 wt % at 50 °C. In addition, the membrane flux increases from 0.8 to 2.5 kg/m2h with a change of the separation factor from 683 to 111 when the operational temperature varies from 30 to 60 °C. These results demonstrate the great potential of the fabricated TFC membranes in practical application for PV dehydration of organic solutions.

Abstract
The Crab Nebula is a bright source of gamma rays powered by the Crab Pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind. We report the detection of gamma rays from this source with energies from 5 × 10-4 to 1.1 peta-electron volts with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades. The ultrahigh-energy photons imply the presence of a peta-electron volt electron accelerator (a pevatron) in the nebula, with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the theoretical limit. We constrain the pevatron's size between 0.025 and 0.1 parsecs and the magnetic field to ≈110 microgauss. The production rate of peta-electron volt electrons, 2.5 × 1036 ergs per second, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar spin-down luminosity, although we cannot exclude a contribution of peta-electron volt protons to the production of the highest-energy gamma rays.

The source is detected with a significance of 8.2σ for E>25 TeV assuming a Gaussian template. The best-fit location is (right ascension, declination) =(95.47°±0.11°,37.92°±0.09°), and the extension is 0.40°±0.07°. The energy spectrum can be described by a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.92±0.17_{stat}±0.02_{sys}. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of the LHAASO source has been found from the radio to sub-TeV bands. The LHAASO observations are consistent with the scenario that VHE electrons escaped from the pulsar, diffused in the interstellar medium, and scattered the interstellar radiation field. If interpreted as the pulsar halo scenario, the diffusion coefficient, inferred for electrons with median energies of ∼160 TeV, is consistent with those obtained from the extended halos around Geminga and Monogem and much smaller than that derived from cosmic ray secondaries. The LHAASO discovery of this source thus likely enriches the class of so-called pulsar halos and confirms that high-energy particles generally diffuse very slowly in the disturbed medium around pulsars.

Ultrahigh-energy photons up to 1.4 petaelectronvolts from 12 γ-ray Galactic sources. Nature 2021; 594:33-36. Abstract
The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons-cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3-6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the combined value of gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in predicting pathological microvascular invasion (pMVI) preoperatively, and to determine the relationship between prediction results and prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Methods: A total of 181 newly diagnosed HCC patients were enrolled in this study. Imaging characteristics and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value of DWI were analyzed. The differences of imaging characteristics and ADC values between different pMVI groups were analyzed.Multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to analyze the value for pMVI prediction by using significant parameters. The patients were grouped based on MRI predicted MVI (mrMVI), and the relationship between mrMVI and recurrence free survival time (RFS) was analyzed. Results: Fifty-one patients were pMVI positive and 130 patients were pMVI negative. The ADC value in pMVI positive group were (1.10±0.17)×10(-3) mm(2)/s, significantly lower than (1.27±0.22)×10(-3) mm(2)/s of pEMVI negative group (P<0.001). The incidence rates of incomplete enhancing "capsule" , non-smooth tumor margin, arterial peritumoral enhancement, mosaic architecture and peritumoral hypointensity on hepatobiliary phase (HBP) in pMVI positive group were significantly higher than those of negative group (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that tumor margin, arterial peritumoral enhancement, peritumoral hypointensity on HBP and ADC value were independently associated with pMVI. ROC analysis showed that the area under curve, sensitivity and specificity of pMVI predicted by combined parameters were 0.830, 76.5% and 81.5%, respectively. The median RFS of mrMVI positive group was 23.6 months, significantly lower than 38.2 months of mrEMVI negative group (P=0.004). Conclusion: Tumor margin, arterial peritumoral enhancement, peritumoral hypointensity on HBP and ADC value are independent predictors of pMVI in HCC, and mrMVI is related with RFS.

Abstract
To clarify the thermal safety inherent in a new epoxiconazole crystal, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and adiabatic accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) were used for testing and research. The Friedman method and model method were used to analyze thermal decomposition kinetics based on the DSC data, and the N-order and autocatalytic decomposition reaction kinetic models were established. The double scan method was utilized to verify the autocatalytic effect during the decomposition process. The Friedman method, N-order, and autocatalytic model methods were used to study the substance's thermal decomposition characteristics. ARC data are utilized to verify the aforementioned prediction results and the kinetic parameters that were obtained based on ARC data from N-order and autocatalytic model methods that concur with the simulation results. This paper applies the N-order and autocatalytic model to the kinetic model to further predict thermal safety parameter time to maximum rate under adiabatic conditions.

Abstract
Periodical silver nanoparticle (NP) arrays were fabricated by magnetron sputtering method with anodic aluminum oxide templates to enhance the UV light emission from ZnO by the surface plasmon resonance effect. Theoretical simulations indicated that the surface plasmon resonance wavelength depended on the diameter and space of Ag NP arrays. By introducing Ag NP arrays with the diameter of 40 nm and space of 100 nm, the photoluminescence intensity of the near band-edge emission from ZnO was twofold enhanced. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurement and energy band analysis indicated that the UV light emission enhancement was attributed to the coupling between the surface plasmons in Ag NP arrays and the excitons in ZnO with the improved spontaneous emission rate and enhanced local electromagnetic fields.

Abstract
Interlayered thin-film nanocomposite membranes (TFNi) are an emerging type of membranes with great potential to overcome the permeability-selectivity upper bound of conventional thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes. However, the exact roles of the interlayer and the corresponding mechanisms leading to enhanced separation performance of TFNi membranes remain poorly understood. This study reports a polydopamine (PDA)-intercalated TFNi nanofiltration membrane (PA-PSF2, PDA coating time of 2 h) that possessed nearly an order of magnitude higher water permeance (14.8 ± 0.4 Lm-2 h-1 bar-1) than the control TFC membrane (PA-PFS0, 2.4 ± 0.5 Lm-2 h-1 bar-1). The TFNi membrane further showed enhanced rejection toward a wide range of inorganic salts and small organic molecules (including antibiotics and endocrine disruptors). Detailed mechanistic investigation reveals that the membrane separation performance was enhanced due to both the direct "gutter" effect of the PDA interlayer and its indirect effects resulting from enhanced polyamide formation on the PDA-coated substrate, with the "gutter" effect playing a more dominant role. This study provides a mechanistic and comprehensive framework for the future development of TFNi membranes.

Abstract
Fe3O4/Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) three-channel hollow fiber catalytic membrane was successfully fabricated via non-solvent induced phase inversion and used for organic wastewater degradation in this work. The effects of Fe3O4 nanoparticles addition on the surface and cross-section morphologies, hydrophilicity and thermal properties of the catalytic membrane were characterized by the field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water contact angle and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The obtained catalytic membrane exhibited good hydrophilicity, a high pure water flux of 175.8 L m-2 h-1 and a high removal of methylene blue (up to 97.6%) with Fenton catalytic reaction. Meanwhile, the catalytic membrane shows excellent anti-fouling property due to the presence of Fenton reaction. Our results show that Fe3O4/PVDF three-channel hollow fiber catalytic membrane was a promising alternative for the degradation of organic contaminants.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO), as a two-dimensional structure material, has attracted widespread attention in the field of molecule sieving. However, GO-based membranes usually exhibit undesirable separation performance because the microstructure of GO is difficult to adjust. Herein, a novel double-crosslinking strategy for tuning the interlayer spacing of GO is reported. The hybrid membrane fabricated by the double-crosslinking strategy was used for pervaporation (PV) dehydration of isopropanol. To achieve high-performance of the PV hybrid membranes, the effects of operating cycles, chitosan concentration, and GO concentration were systematically investigated. The PV hybrid membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle measurement, and scanning electron microscopy. The results demonstrate that the interlayer of GO can be adjusted successfully by the double-crosslinking strategy. The fabricated hybrid membrane containing 0.1 wt % GO exhibited excellent performance with a flux of 4391 g/m2h and a separation factor of 1491, which indicated that the double-crosslinking strategy may extend the applications of GO in the field of membrane separation.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the relationship between serum vitamin D level and the risk of type 2 diabetes in Harbin residents. Methods: On April 2010, 24 communities in 7 districts of Harbin were selected as research sites using multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method. A total of 9 734 residents aged 20-74 years was investigated using general questionnaire survey, dietary survey and biochemical indicators test and followed up from January 2015 to July 2016. A total of 4 721 subjects with serum vitamin D were included in the study. According to the quartile of baseline serum vitamin D, the subjects were divided into four groups, from Q1 to Q4 group. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between serum vitamin D and the risk of type 2 diabetes. A mediation analysis model was used to analyze the mediating role of insulin resistance in this risk relationship. Results: At the time of follow-up, 432 patients with type 2 diabetes were screened. The median (P(25), P(75)) age of the diabetic group and the non-diabetic group were 54 (49, 61) and 51 (43, 57) years, respectively, and males accounted for 40.5% (175 cases) and 35.5% (1 513 cases), respectively. The median (P(25), P(75)) serum vitamin D was 16.0 (13.5, 18.5) and 17.4 (14.3, 20.5) ng/ml, respectively. After relevant confounders and insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) were adjusted, compared to the serum vitamin D level Q(1) group, the risk of diabetes was reduced by 40% in the Q(3) group with RR (95%CI) about 0.60 (0.44-0.82), while the risk of diabetes was reduced by 59% in Q(4) group with RR (95%CI) about 0.41 (0.29-0.57). Through mediation analysis, the Gutt index mediating effect representing peripheral insulin resistance was 53.8%, and the mediating effect of HOMA-IR representing hepatic insulin resistance was 6.6%. Conclusion: The risk of type 2 diabetes is low in Harbin residents with higher serum vitamin D level. Insulin resistance has a mediating effect on the relationship of vitamin D and the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cellular senescence is a recognized barrier for progression of chronic liver diseases to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The expression of a cluster of genes is altered in response to environmental factors during senescence. However, it is questionable whether these genes could serve as biomarkers for HCC patients.
AIM To develop a signature of senescence-associated genes (SAGs) that predicts patients’ overall survival (OS) to improve prognosis prediction of HCC.
METHODS SAGs were identified using two senescent cell models. Univariate COX regression analysis was performed to screen the candidate genes significantly associated with OS of HCC in a discovery cohort (GSE14520) for the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator modelling. Prognostic value of this seven-gene signature was evaluated using two independent cohorts retrieved from the GEO (GSE14520) and the Cancer Genome Atlas datasets, respectively. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted to compare the predictive accuracy of the seven-SAG signature and serum α-fetoprotein (AFP).
RESULTS A total of 42 SAGs were screened and seven of them, including KIF18B, CEP55, CIT, MCM7, CDC45, EZH2, and MCM5, were used to construct a prognostic formula. All seven genes were significantly downregulated in senescent cells and upregulated in HCC tissues. Survival analysis indicated that our seven-SAG signature was strongly associated with OS, especially in Asian populations, both in discovery and validation cohorts. Moreover, time-dependent ROC curve analysis suggested the seven-gene signature had a better predictive accuracy than serum AFP in predicting HCC patients’ 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS.
CONCLUSION We developed a seven-SAG signature, which could predict OS of Asian HCC patients. This risk model provides new clinical evidence for the accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment of HCC.

Abstract
Objective: To assess the association and intensity of baseline dyslipidemia with the incidence of carotid plaque in a researchers group in China. Methods: A total of 716 researchers were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. Dyslipidemia was assessed in 2010. Follow-up study on carotid plaque was conducted in 2017. Results: Over 8 years' follow-up, 289 carotid plaque patients were identified among 716 individuals who did not have carotid plaque at baseline survey, with cumulative incidence of 40.36%. After adjustment of age, gender, BMI, waist circumference, FPG, SBP, DBP, ALT and uric acid, compared with non-dyslipidemia group, HR of carotid plaque for such populations with ≥3 types of dyslipidemia was 1.681 (95%CI: 1.090--2.593). Conclusions: Dyslipidemia might be associated with higher risk of carotid plaque, and population with ≥3 types of dyslipidemia had higher risk for carotid plaque. Prevention of dyslipidemia or reduction of types of dyslipidemia might be one of the effective precautions for prevention of carotid plaque.

Abstract
Conventional thin-film composite (TFC) membranes suffer from the trade-off relationship between permeability and selectivity, known as the "upper bound". In this work, we report a high performance thin-film composite membrane prepared on a tannic acid (TA)-Fe nanoscaffold (TFCn) to overcome such upper bound. Specifically, a TA-Fe nanoscaffold was first coated onto a polysulfone substrate, followed by performing an interfacial polymerization reaction between trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and piperazine (PIP). The TA-Fe nanoscaffold enhanced the uptake of amine monomers and provided a platform for their controlled release. The smaller surface pore size of the TA-Fe coated substrate further eliminated the intrusion of polyamide into the substrate pores. The resulting membrane TFCn showed a water permeability of 19.6 ± 0.5 L m2- h-1 bar-1, which was an order of magnitude higher than that of control TFC membrane (2.2 ± 0.3 L m-2 h-1 bar-1). The formation of a more order polyamide rejection layer also significantly enhanced salt rejection (e.g., NaCl, MgCl2, Na2SO4, and MgSO4) and divalent to monovalent ion selectivity (e.g., NaCl/MgSO4). Compared to conventional TFC nanofiltration membranes, the novel TFCn membrane successfully overcame the longstanding permeability and selectivity trade-off. The current work paves a new avenue for fabricating high performance TFC membranes.

Abstract
Objective: To study the expression of membrane HLA-G (mHLA-G) and the receptor immunoglobulin-like transcript 2(ILT2) on lymphocyte and find their association with rejection and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection after renal transplantation. Methods: A total of 88 cases of renal transplant recipients for the first time from February 2014 to February 2016 were studied in this work. Recipients can be divided into rejection group (n=12) and stable renal function group (n=41) according to whether rejection occurred. Recipients only infected CMV not developed rejection were included in the CMV positive group (n=24). CMV negative group (n=11) including CMV negative recipients once infected CMV.The expression of mHLA-G and ILT2 on lymphocytes were detected by flow cytometry, and the differences among different groups were analyzed. Results: The data showed that after renal transplantation, T and B lymphocytes mHLA-G expression rate was the lowest in the rejection group (0.42%±0.35%, 0.88%±0.47%), having significant difference with renal function stable group and CMV positive group (all P<0.01). In CMV positive group the expression of mHLA-G on T and B lymphocytes was the highest (1.31%±0.69%, 2.01%±0.91%), having significant difference with rejection group (P<0.001). The expression of mHLA-G on B cell was statistically significantly different between CMV positive group and CMV negative group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in ILT2 expression on B cell among the four groups (P>0.05). The expression rate of ILT2 on T cells was higher in the CMV positive group (36.91%±14.91%), having significant difference with the other three groups (P<0.01). Conclusions: Low expression of mHLA-G on T and B lymphocytes may predict rejection after renal transplantation. High expression of mHLA-G and ILT2 on lymphocytes is prone to CMV infection after renal transplantation .

METHODS The general information of each member in families with poor outcomes were collected from 2007 to 2010, and serological test was performed to analyze the prevalence and distribution of HBsAg in family members. The chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was used to analyze and compare the sex of offspring and the prevalence of HBsAg in them in 266 nuclear families with different paternal and maternal HBsAg status. RESULTS The positive rates of HBsAg in parents, siblings, children, and spouses of the probands were 20%, 88.2%, 76.8%, and 9.5%, respectively. The nuclear families with HBsAg-positive fathers and HBsAg-negative mothers had a significantly increased proportion of male offspring (male/female ratio = 2.02) compared with those with HBsAg-positive mothers and HBsAg-negative fathers (1.22) or those with HBsAg-negative fathers and mothers (0.96). In addition, in the nuclear families with HBsAg-positive fathers and HBsAg-negative mothers, the male offspring had a significantly higher HBsAg positive rate than female offspring (37.4% vs 13.8%), while in those with HBsAg-positive mothers and HBsAg-negative fathers or those with HBsAg-negative fathers and mothers, HBsAg positive rate showed no significant difference between male and female offspring. CONCLUSION In families with familial clustering of HBV infection and poor outcomes, mother-to-child transmission is still the major route of HBV transmission, but father-to-child transmission also plays a role in HBV transmission in this special population. Positive HBsAg in fathers is associated with the increased proportion of male offspring, and father-to-son transmission of HBV is higher than father-to-daughter transmission.

A Novel Seeding Method of Interfacial Polymerization-Assisted Dip Coating for the Preparation of Zeolite NaA Membranes on Ceramic Hollow Fiber Supports. Abstract
A novel seeding method combining interfacial polymerization (IP) technique with dip-coating operation was designed for directly coating nanosized NaA seed crystals (150 nm) onto the micrometer-sized α-Al2O3 hollow fiber support, in which the polyamide (PA) produced by IP acted as an effective medium to freeze and fix seed crystals at the proper position so that the controlled seed layer could be accomplished. While a coating suspension with only 0.5 wt % seed content was used, a very thin seed layer with high quality and good adhesion was achieved through dip coating twice without drying between, and the whole seeding process was operated at ambient conditions. The resulting zeolite NaA membranes not only exhibited high pervaporation (PV) performance with an average separation factor above 10000 and flux nearly 9.0 kg/m(2)·h in dehydration of 90 wt % ethanol aqueous solution at 348 K but also demonstrated great reproducibility by testing more than eight batches of zeolite membranes. In addition, this seeding strategy could be readily extended to the preparation of other supported zeolite membranes for a wide range of separation applications.

Abstract
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Ex-PRESS (R50) implantation combined with phacoemulsification in primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) patients with cataract.Twenty-four eyes of 24 patients with unregulated PACG underwent combined cataract and glaucoma surgery. After phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation, the Ex-PRESS (R-50) was inserted into the anterior chamber under a scleral flap. The intraocular pressure (IOP), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), number of medications, and complications were recorded preoperatively as well as postoperatively on day 7 and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. The mean follow-up was 16.4 ± 2.5 months (range 14-21 months) and the mean age of the patients was 64.7 ± 6.8 years (range 56-78 years). The mean IOP was 20.4 ± 5.4 mm Hg preoperatively and decreased to 10.2 ± 2.8, 13.1 ± 2.7, 14.9 ± 4.1, 14.3 ± 3.9, and 14.0 ± 3.6 mm Hg on day 7 and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery (all P < 0.005). At 12 months, the mean BCVA was 0.62 ± 0.33 and the number of medications was 0.3 ± 0.6. Most of complications were resolved spontaneously and conservatively. The Ex-PRESS implantation combined with phacoemulsification cataract extraction is safe and effective for reducing IOP and antiglaucoma medications in PACG patients with cataract.

Abstract
We explored the effect of baculovirus P35 protein on apoptosis in the brain tissue of rats with acute cerebral infarction (ACI). A rat model of middle cerebral artery infarction was created. The rats were randomly divided into sham, model, and treatment groups. Baculovirus P35 protein was injected into the intracranial arteries of the treatment group rats. The rats in the model group were given an equal volume of phosphate-buffered saline. The rats were sacrificed after 72 h and the brain tissue was separated. The levels of caspase-3, Bcl-2, and Bax mRNA, the brain cell apoptosis index, and the infarct size were determined. After 72 h, the levels of caspase-3 and Bax mRNA in the model and treatment groups were significantly greater than in the sham group, and the levels of Bcl-2 mRNA were significantly smaller (P < 0.05). The levels of caspase-3 and Bax mRNA were significantly lower in the treatment group than in the model group, and the level of Bcl-2 mRNA was significantly greater (P < 0.05). Compared with the sham group, the brain tissue apoptosis index and the cerebral infarction area increased significantly in the model and treatment groups (P < 0.05). The brain tissue apoptosis index and cerebral infarction area in the treatment group were significantly lower than in the model group (P < 0.05). Baculovirus P35 protein can effectively inhibit brain cell apoptosis in rats with ACI. It delayed apoptosis and necrosis in subjects with ACI tissue and had a protective effect on brain tissue.

Effect of surface free energies on the heterogeneous nucleation of water droplet: a molecular dynamics simulation approach. J Chem Phys 2015; 142:054701. Abstract
Heterogeneous nucleation of water droplet on surfaces with different solid-liquid interaction intensities is investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. The interaction potentials between surface atoms and vapor molecules are adjusted to obtain various surface free energies, and the nucleation process and wetting state of nuclei on surfaces are investigated. The results indicate that near-constant contact angles are already established for nano-scale nuclei on various surfaces, with the contact angle decreasing with solid-liquid interaction intensities linearly. Meanwhile, noticeable fluctuation of vapor-liquid interfaces can be observed for the nuclei that deposited on surfaces, which is caused by the asymmetric forces from vapor molecules. The formation and growth rate of nuclei are increasing with the solid-liquid interaction intensities. For low energy surface, the attraction of surface atoms to water molecules is comparably weak, and the pre-existing clusters can depart from the surface and enter into the bulk vapor phase. The distribution of clusters within the bulk vapor phase becomes competitive as compared with that absorbed on surface. For moderate energy surfaces, heterogeneous nucleation predominates and the formation of clusters within bulk vapor phase is suppressed. The effect of high energy particles that embedded in low energy surface is also discussed under the same simulation system. The nucleation preferably initiates on the high energy particles, and the clusters that formed on the heterogeneous particles are trapped around their original positions instead of migrating around as that observed on smooth surfaces. This feature makes it possible for the heterogeneous particles to act as fixed nucleation sites, and simulation results also suggest that the number of nuclei increases monotonously with the number of high energy particles. The growth of nuclei on high energy particles can be divided into three sub-stages, beginning with the formation of a wet-spot, increase of contact angle with near-constant contact line, and finally growth with constant contact angle. The growth rate of nuclei also increases with the size of high energy particles.
