Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Observation of WZγ Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst)  fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06  fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

[A comprehensive analysis on economic evaluation of HIV vaccination strategies]

Objective: To summarize the progress in research of economic evaluation of HIV vaccination strategies in the world, and provide reference for future decision-making and research on HIV vaccination. Methods: The key words used for literature retrieval were "HIV/AIDS", and "vaccine/vaccination" and "economic evaluation/cost-effectiveness analysis/cost-utility analysis/cost-benefit analysis/HTA". Literatures about the economic evaluation of HIV vaccination strategies published as of July 31, 2022, were retrieved from Wanfang Data (Wanfang), China Hospital Knowledge Database (CHKD), and PubMed databases. The quality of the articles was evaluated and analyzed comprehensively. Results: A total of 17 study articles with good quality were included. Results from the comprehensive analysis showed that HIV vaccination is a cost-saving or cost-effective strategy for key populations or the whole population. HIV vaccination could effectively reduce new infections and improve the quality of life of population. Factors, such as vaccine efficiency, coverage rate, price, and risk behavior change after vaccination, would affect the vaccination effect in different targeted populations. Conclusions: There were limited high-quality research data about the economic evaluation of HIV vaccination strategies. It is necessary to conduct in-depth research based on real-world evidence.

Evaluation of air quality changes in a Chinese megacity over a 15-year period (2006-2021) using PM2.5 receptor modelling

Air quality impairment has a massive impact on human health, with atmospheric particulate matter (PM) playing a major role. The People's Republic of China experienced a trend of increasing PM2.5 concentrations from 2000 to 2013. However, after the application of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan and other related control measures, sharp decreases in air pollutant concentrations were particularly evident in the city of Wuhan (central China). This study analysed major changes in PM2.5 concentrations, composition and source apportionment (using receptor modelling) based on Wuhan's PM2.5 chemical speciation datasets from 2006 to 2007, 2019-2021 and contemporaneous gaseous pollutant values. Average SO2 concentrations decreased by 88%, from the first to the second period, mostly due to measures that reduced coal combustion. However, NO2 only declined by 25%, with policy measures likely being undermined by an increased number of vehicles. PM2.5 concentrations decreased by 65%, with the PM constituents each being affected differently. Coal combustion-related element concentrations, OC, SO42-, NH4+, EC, Cl-, Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Co and NO3- decreased by 22-90%. Secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) was initially dominated by (NH4)2SO4 (73%) in 2006, but later dominated by NH4NO3 (52%) in 2021. Receptor modelling identified major sources contributing to PM2.5: Mineral, road and desert dust (MRDD), Secondary sulphate (SECS), Secondary nitrate (SECN), Tungsten industry (W), Toxic Elements of Coal (TEC), Iron and Steel (IRONS), Coal Combustion (CC), Residential Heating (RH), Refinery (REF) and Traffic (TRF). In relative proportions, TEC (-83%), SECS (-64%) and SECN (-48%) reduced their contributions to PM2.5 whilst MRDD increased (+62.5%). Thus, the results indicate not only a drastic abatement of PM pollution in Wuhan but also a change in the sources of pollution, which requires further actions to reduce PM2.5 concentrations to health protective values. Secondary PM and fugitive emissions are key components to abate.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare Z Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Expression of ICAM-1 and E-selectin in different metabolic obesity phenotypes: discrepancy for endothelial dysfunction

OBJECTIVES

Endothelial dysfunction, the earliest vascular alteration, is a consequence of metabolic disorders associated with obesity. However, it is still unclear whether a proportion of obese individuals without metabolic alterations associated with obesity, defined as "metabolically healthy obesity (MHO)", exhibit better endothelial function. We therefore aimed to investigate the association of different metabolic obesity phenotypes with endothelial dysfunction.

METHODS

The obese participants without clinical cardiovascular disease from the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) were allocated to the different metabolic obesity phenotypes based on their metabolic status, including MHO and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Associations of metabolic obesity phenotypes with the biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction, including soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin), were evaluated using multiple linear regression models.

RESULTS

Plasma levels of sICAM-1 and sE-selectin were respectively measured in 2371 and 968 participants. Compared to the non-obese participants, those with MUO were associated with higher concentrations of sICAM-1 (β 22.04, 95% CI 14.33-29.75, P < 0.001) and sE-selectin (β 9.87, 95% CI 6.00-13.75, P < 0.001) after adjusting for confounders. However, no differences were found for the concentrations of sICAM-1 (β 0.70, 95% CI - 8.91 to 10.32, P = 0.886) and sE-selectin (β 3.69, 95% CI - 1.13 to 8.51, P = 0.133) in the participants with MHO compared to the non-obese participants.

CONCLUSIONS

Individuals with MUO were associated with elevated biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction, but the association with endothelial dysfunction was not found in those with MHO, indicating that the individuals with MHO might exhibit better endothelial function.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72  nb^{-1} and 257  pb^{-1} of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. [Difference of urinary protein components and the correlation between urinary protein quantification and glomerular filtration rate in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia]

Objective: To investigate the difference of urinary protein components in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia (PE) with different degrees of proteinuria and the correlation between 24-hour urinary protein quantification and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Methods: Clinical data of 101 PE pregnant women who were delivered in Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from July 2018 to June 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. According to 24-hour urinary protein quantification, they were divided into 3 groups, including 40 cases of mild proteinuria group (24-hour urinary protein quantification ≤2.0 g), 21 cases of moderate proteinuria group (2.0 g<24-hour urinary protein quantification ≤5.0 g), 40 cases of severe proteinuria group (24-hour urinary protein quantification >5.0 g). The general clinical data, urinary protein index and renal function index of PE pregnant women in 3 groups were compared. The eGFR was calculated based on age, serum creatinine (sCr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum albumin (sAlb). Correlation analysis was conducted between 24-hour urinary protein quantification and each index of eGFR. Results: (1) General clinical data: the median PE onset week (31 weeks) and delivery gestational week [(36.4±3.6) weeks] of PE pregnant women in the mild proteinuria group were later than those in the moderate proteinuria group [median PE onset: 22 weeks, delivery: (32.2±4.2) weeks] and severe proteinuria group [median PE onset: 25 weeks, delivery: (29.6±3.4) weeks]; systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase levels and the incidence of fetal growth restriction were lower than those in the moderate and severe proteinuria groups; median newborn birth weight (3 150 g) was higher than those in the moderate proteinuria group (1 305 g) and the severe proteinuria group (1 042 g), respectively. The differences were statistically significant (all P<0.05). (2) Urinary protein index: the 24-hour urinary protein quantification, urinary microalbumin (mAlb) and urinary transferrin (TRF) levels of PE pregnant women in the mild proteinuria group, moderate proteinuria group and severe proteinuria group were increased successively, and the differences were statistically significant (all P<0.05). The median urinary α1-microglobulin (α1-MG) level of PE pregnant women in the severe proteinuria group (50 mg/L) was significantly higher than those in the mild proteinuria group (17 mg/L) and moderate proteinuria group (22 mg/L; all P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the mild proteinuria group and the moderate proteinuria group (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the median urinary β2-microglobulin (β2-MG) level among the 3 groups (P=0.632). (3) Renal function index: sAlb and eGFR of PE pregnant women in the mild proteinuria group, moderate proteinuria group and severe proteinuria group were successively decreased, and BUN was successively increased, respectively, and the differences were statistically significant (all P<0.05). The sCr level of PE pregnant women in the severe proteinuria group was significantly higher than those in the mild proteinuria group and the moderate proteinuria group (all P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the mild proteinuria group and the moderate proteinuria group (P>0.05). (4) Correlation analysis: the 24-hour urinary protein quantification of PE pregnant women was significantly negatively correlated with eGFR (r=-0.645, P<0.001), and was correlated with the variables sAlb (r=-0.549, P<0.001), sCr (r=0.582, P<0.001) and BUN (r=-0.657, P<0.001) in the eGFR calculation formula. The 24-hour urinary protein quantification were significantly negatively correlated with the gestational weeks of PE onset, gestational weeks of termination of pregnancy and newborn birth weight (all P<0.05). Conclusions: The protein composition in the urine of PE pregnant women with different degrees of proteinuria is not different, but the protein level is significantly different. There is a significant negative correlation between the increase of 24-hour urinary protein quantification and the decrease of eGFR.

Strong Constraints on Jet Quenching in Centrality-Dependent p+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV from ATLAS

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36  nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6  pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5  GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4  GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. [A study on the mediation effect of insulin use on diabetic retinopathy in a community population]

Objective: To explore the risk factors for diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with diabetes and the mediating effect of insulin use on the relationship between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and DR. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Random cluster sampling was conducted using a random number table method. A total of 84 sampling points (including 2 pilot points) were selected from the registered population of patients with type 2 diabetes aged 50 years and above at the Disease Prevention and Control Center in Funing County, Jiangsu Province. Questionnaires and biochemical tests were performed to obtain information on the general characteristics of the participants, medical history, insulin use, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. Ocular examinations, including anterior segment and fundus examinations, were conducted. The participants were divided into two groups, DR (diabetic retinopathy) and non-DR, based on the presence or absence of retinal hemorrhages, hard exudates, cotton wool spots, neovascularization, preretinal or vitreous hemorrhage. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the influencing factors for DR. The Karlson-Holm-Breen analysis method was used for mediation effect analysis. Results: A total of 2 067 diabetic patients were enrolled, of whom 1 965 completed the survey and 1 802 were included in the statistical analysis, resulting in a response rate of 87.2%. Among them, 660 patients were diagnosed with DR, with a detection rate of 36.63%. The results of multivariate analysis showed that diabetes duration (OR=1.166, 95%CI: 1.138-1.196), family history of diabetes (OR=1.325, 95%CI: 1.001-1.755), insulin therapy (OR=1.995, 95%CI: 1.434-2.777), HbA1c level (OR=1.513, 95%CI: 1.189-1.925), and alcohol consumption (OR=0.712, 95%CI: 0.514-0.985) were independent risk factors for DR. The mediating effect of insulin use accounted for 13.67% of the total effect of HbA1c on DR (P<0.001). Conclusions: The risk factors for DR in patients with diabetes include a history of insulin therapy, longer duration of diabetes, family history of diabetes, alcohol consumption, and high HbA1c levels. Insulin use increases the impact of HbA1c on DR and has a partial mediating effect on DR.

Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H→γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Generation of a Triple-Shuttling Vector and the Application in Plant Plus-Strand RNA Virus Infectious cDNA Clone Construction

Infectious cloning of plant viruses is a powerful tool for studying the reverse genetic manipulation of viral genes in virus–host plant interactions, contributing to a deeper understanding of the life history and pathogenesis of viruses. Yet, most of the infectious clones of RNA virus constructed in E. coli are unstable and toxic. Therefore, we modified the binary vector pCass4-Rz and constructed the ternary shuttle vector pCA4Y. The pCA4Y vector has a higher copy number in the E. coli than the conventional pCB301 vector, can obtain a high concentration of plasmid, and is economical and practical, so it is suitable for the construction of plant virus infectious clones in basic laboratories. The constructed vector can be directly extracted from yeast and transformed into Agrobacterium tumefaciens to avoid toxicity in E. coli. Taking advantage of the pCA4Y vector, we established a detailed large and multiple DNA HR-based cloning method in yeast using endogenous recombinase. We successfully constructed the Agrobacterium-based infectious cDNA clone of ReMV. This study provides a new choice for the construction of infectious viral clones.

Natural occurrence of broad bean wilt virus 2 on Mirabilis jalapa in China

Mirabilis jalapa Libosch. is an annual ornamental herbaceous plant. Its leaves and roots are used as a traditional folk medicine that function in clearing heat and detoxifying, promoting blood circulation, regulating menstruation, and nourishing kidney (Annapoorani et al. 2014; Liu et al. 2020; Wang et al. 2018). Broad bean wilt virus 2 (BBWV-2), which belongs to the family Secoviridae, is transmitted by aphid in a non-persistent manner in the nature (Kondo et al. 2005) and mainly damages Vicia faba, pepper, yam and spinach (He et al. 2021). The leaves of M. jalapa on the campus showed shrinking (Supplementary Fig. 1A), yellowing (Supplementary Fig. 1B), mosaic (Supplementary Fig. 1D & 1E), and the whole plant had stunted and rough (Supplementary Fig. 1A & 1C) symptoms in the autumn of 2021. Eight plants (S21-S28) with these symptoms were harvested for total RNA extraction, siRNA mixture purification, and siRNA library made (NEBNext® Ultra™ II RNA Library Prep Kit for Illumina®, NEB, UK). The high-throughput siRNA sequencing with pair-end method was performed on Illumina Hiseq 2000 platform (Sangon, Shanghai, China). The raw sequencing data was treated with the Illumina's CASAVA pipeline (version 1.8). The adaptor was removed and the reads were mostly distributed in 21-24 nt length area (Supplementary Fig. 2A). The contigs (∼12,500, Length > 350 bp) were obtained by de novo assembling with the Velvet Software 0.7.31 (k = 17), then the BLASTN was preformed against GenBank database. Surprisingly, 237 contigs showed significant nucleotide sequence similarities to the genome of BBWV-2. To determine the incidence of BBWV-2 to M. jalapa in campus garden, twenty-eight leaf samples were randomly collected from the garden. Leave extract and total RNA of the sample were tested for BBWV-2 by ELISA (Agdia, USA, SRA46202/0096) and RT-PCR assay, respectively. Twenty-two samples were infected compared with the positive control, and their readings of ELISA were above or parallel to the positive control (Supplementary Fig. 2B∼2D). The coding sequence (1,395 bp) of BBWV-2 movement protein (MP) was amplified by a specific pair of primers (Supplementary Table S1) according to the contigs, the results indicated that the 22 out of 28 samples (78.6%) tested positive for BBWV-2 by both ELISA and RT-PCR (Supplementary Fig. 2E). The MP fragment of BBWV-2 obtained from one of the sample was purified by TIANgel Midi Purification Kit (Tiangen, Beijing, China) and then cloned into pMD19-T (TaKaRa, Dalian, China) vector. Ten separate clones were selected and sequenced (Sangon, Shanghai, China) after PCR verification. The obtained sequences (GenBank accession No. OM416039) were analyzed by BLASTN and bioEdit software (version 7.2.3). According to the phylogenetic tree constructed by BBWV-2 MP sequences (Supplementary Fig. 3), the obtained MP sequences (OM416039, ON677747, and ON677748) were most related to the BBWV-2 MP sequences that from pepper (GenBank accession No. JX183228.1), they share the nucleotide identity of 84.87%. To determine the occurrence and distribution of BBWV-2 in other areas, another twenty-two samples were randomly collected for RT-PCR in different regions of Jiangsu Province, China (Supplementary Table S2). The BBWV-2 infection rate was 76.0% in the M. jalapa. In sum, this is the first report of BBWV-2 naturally infecting M. Jalapa in China.

Development of polyclonal antibodies-based serological methods for detection of the rehmannia mosaic virus in field plants

Rehmannia glutinosa is a top-grade traditional Chinese medicine, and also is an important planting medicinal material for Chinese poor farmers shaking off poverty. Rehmannia mosaic virus (ReMV) causes big economic loss of R. glutinosa in planting area. However, there is no effective methods for quick, accurate, and high-throughput detection for ReMV in Chinese production area. The preserved R. glutinosa samples carrying ReMV was taken for research material. The coat protein coding sequences (CPReMV) was cloned and sequenced. The target sequence was further placed into a prokaryotic expression vector to express the N-terminal-tagged recombinant CPReMV protein (His-CPReMV). Purified His-CPReMV was used as an antigen to immunize New Zealand white rabbits, and antiserum was obtained. The titers and sensitivities of the antisera were analyzed and evaluated. Polyclonal antibodies were purified from the antiserum, and the titers and sensitivity to the target His-CPReMV protein were evaluated. The results demonstrate that the obtained polyclonal antibodies against His-CPReMV could be successfully used for rapid, accurate, and high-throughput detection of ReMV from R. glutinosa planted in the wild. Our investigation established serological-based detection methods for ReMV for the first time, and provides a foundation for future exploration of the pathogenic mechanisms of ReMV in R. glutinosa.

Observation of WWW Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820±100 (stat)±80 (syst)  fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511±18  fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

Phosphorylation of plant virus proteins: Analysis methods and biological functions

Phosphorylation is one of the most extensively investigated post-translational modifications that orchestrate a variety of cellular signal transduction processes. The phosphorylation of virus-encoded proteins plays an important regulatory role in the infection cycle of such viruses in plants. In recent years, molecular mechanisms underlying the phosphorylation of plant viral proteins have been widely studied. Based on recent publications, our study summarizes the phosphorylation analyses of plant viral proteins and categorizes their effects on biological functions according to the viral life cycle. This review provides a theoretical basis for elucidating the molecular mechanisms of viral infection. Furthermore, it deepens our understanding of the biological functions of phosphorylation in the interactions between plants and viruses.

A detailed map of Higgs boson interactions by the ATLAS experiment ten years after the discovery

The standard model of particle physics1-4 describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our Universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the standard model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles5-9. The quantum excitation of this field, known as the Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson of the standard model was observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN10,11. Since then, more than 30 times as many Higgs bosons have been recorded by the ATLAS experiment, enabling much more precise measurements and new tests of the theory. Here, on the basis of this larger dataset, we combine an unprecedented number of production and decay processes of the Higgs boson to scrutinize its interactions with elementary particles. Interactions with gluons, photons, and W and Z bosons-the carriers of the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces-are studied in detail. Interactions with three third-generation matter particles (bottom (b) and top (t) quarks, and tau leptons (τ)) are well measured and indications of interactions with a second-generation particle (muons, μ) are emerging. These tests reveal that the Higgs boson discovered ten years ago is remarkably consistent with the predictions of the theory and provide stringent constraints on many models of new phenomena beyond the standard model.

[Evaluation of the effect of comprehensive prevention and management of diabetes mellitus of two cross-sectional surveys based on community population]

To investigate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) among residents in Chongchuan district, Nantong city in 2012 and 2018, and evaluate the effectiveness of community comprehensive management of DM. Based on the data of 17 780 and 13 382 residents in the cross-sectional surveys of the " National Demonstration Area for Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases " project in Chongchuan District of Nantong City, Jiangsu Province in 2012 and 2018, 4 583 and 3 996 DM-related information were obtained. The population of Jiangsu Province in 2012 and 2018 was used as the reference for standardization. The rates of prevalence and management (including awareness, treatment, treatment of patients who knew their diabetic situation, control and control of patients under treatment) of DM in the two surveys were compared using chi-square test. The results showed that in 2012 and 2018, the prevalence rates of DM were 12.0% and 15.7% (χ²=24.25, P<0.05), and the standardized rates were 10.1% and 10.8% (χ²=1.05, P=0.306). The incidence rates were 5.7% and 2.3%, respectively (χ²=55.60, P<0.05). The standardized prevalence rates in the two surveys were 9.7% and 11.6% for males (χ²=3.66, P=0.056) and 10.5% and 9.9% for females (χ²=0.50, P=0.481), 7.2% and 6.5% (χ²=0.85, P=0.357) for people aged 18-59 years old and 20.6% and 21.9% (χ²=0.91, P=0.339) for people aged 60 years and over, respectively. The standardized rates of awareness, treatment, treatment of patients who knew their diabetic situation, control, and control of patients under treatment in 2018 were 84.4%, 80.3%, 95.2%, 58.4%, and 70.2%, respectively, higher than 47.2%, 23.4%, 44.8%, 30.4% and 59.4% in 2012 (χ²=183.33, χ²=380.65, χ²=282.99, χ²=93.24, χ²=6.22, all P<0.05). Among men, the standardized rates of awareness, treatment, treatment of patients who knew their diabetic situation, and control in 2018 were 85.8%, 78.8%, 91.8% and 62.7%, higher than 50.5%, 37.5%, 72.3% and 32.6% in 2012 (χ²=78.40, χ²=96.17, χ²=27.55, χ²=48.96, all P<0.05). Similarly, the standardized management rates in 2018 were 83.0%, 81.7%, 98.5%, 54.1% and 65.1%, higher than 44.0%, 10.0%, 18.3%, 28.2% and 48.8% in 2012 among women (χ²=105.52, χ²=326.36, χ²=317.22, χ²=43.34, χ²=3.87, all P<0.05). The standardized rates of awareness, treatment, treatment of patients who knew their diabetic situation, and control of people aged 18-59 and 60 years and over were 82.9%, 79.7%, 96.1%, 55.0% and 88.0%, 81.8%, 93.0% and 67.2%, higher than 42.6%, 19.8%, 42.2%, 27.5% and 63.9%, 36.8%, 53.9%, 40.8% in 2012 (χ²=44.51, χ²=102.17, χ²=57.78, χ²=21.65, all P<0.05; χ²=71.18, χ²=181.55, χ²=146.26, χ²=59.23, all P<0.05). The comprehensive prevention and control system of chronic diseases, which comprehensively covered the life of community residents, had good management effect on DM, and effectively promoted health education and health promotion.

Neurotoxic 18-kDa apolipoprotein E fragment production contributes to anesthetic sevoflurane-induced tau phosphorylation and neuroinflammation in vitro

Anesthesia may induce neuronal tau phosphorylation and neurotoxicity in the developing brain. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) may play a protective role in neuronal activity and injury repair, whereas its 18-kDa fragments are reported to induce neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease patients. We aimed to test the hypothesis that differences in 18-kDa ApoE fragment levels, but not full-length ApoE, in primary neurons contribute to differences in tau phosphorylation and neuroinflammation with or without sevoflurane administration. Neurons extracted from wild-type (WT), ApoE knockout (ApoE-KO), and ApoE ε3-and ε2-targeted replacement (ApoE ε3, ApoE ε2) mice were divided into control and sevoflurane groups. Neurons in the sevoflurane group were treated with 21% O₂, 5% CO₂, and 4.1% sevoflurane, whereas those in the control group were treated with 21% O₂ and 5% CO₂ only on day 5 of neuronal culture. ApoE mRNA, full-length ApoE, 18-kDa ApoE fragments, Tau-PS202/PT205 (AT8), Tau-PSer396/404 (PHF1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β levels were measured. The data showed that sevoflurane-induced AT8 and PHF1 increases, and TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β increases in WT or ApoE ε3 neurons (both expressing full-length and 18-kDa fragmented ApoE) could be mitigated in ApoE ε2 (only expressing full-length ApoE), but not in ApoE-KO neurons, indicating that differences in 18-kDa ApoE fragments, but not full-length ApoE, in primary mouse neurons contributed to differences in tau phosphorylation and neuroinflammation with or without 4.1% sevoflurane administration.

Search for Lepton-Flavor Violation in Z-Boson Decays with τ Leptons with the ATLAS Detector

A search for lepton-flavor-violating Z→eτ and Z→μτ decays with pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of Run 2 pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and is combined with the results of a similar ATLAS search in the final state in which the τ lepton decays hadronically, using the same data set as well as Run 1 data. The addition of leptonically decaying τ leptons significantly improves the sensitivity reach for Z→ℓτ decays. The Z→ℓτ branching fractions are constrained in this analysis to B(Z→eτ)<7.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<7.2×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level. The combination with the previously published analyses sets the strongest constraints to date: B(Z→eτ)<5.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<6.5×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level.

Development of polyclonal antibodies-based serological methods and a DIG-labelled DNA probe-based molecular method for detection of the Vicia cryptic virus-M in field plants

Vicia cryptic virus M (VCV-M), a member of the genus Amalgavirus of the family Amalgaviridae, was first identified in 2009 in a Vicia faba Linn. planting in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. However, there has been no further research on the biological features of VCV-M to date and the viral particles and coat protein (CP) have not been identified. The putative CP of VCV-M was predicted from the viral genomic RNA. In this study, a recombinant version of the putative CP of VCV-M (His-CP^VCV-M) was produced and used to prepare a polyclonal antiserum against the His-CP^VCV-M. Using this antiserum, a Western blot, an immuno-dot-blot and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were developed for testing field samples of V. faba for the presence of VCV-M. Additionally, a digoxigenin (DIG)-labelled DNA probe-based Northern blot assay was established for VCV-M genome detection in field samples. The results showed that both the serological and nucleic acid assays could accurately and sensitively detect VCV-M in V. faba. This research represented the first confirmed expression of the putative CP of VCV-M in infected V. faba tissues. The serological and nucleic acid assays provided two complementary methods for VCV-M detection which could contribute to seed quality control and production increases of V. faba crops.

Search for New Phenomena in Final States with Two Leptons and One or No b-Tagged Jets at sqrt[s]=13 TeV Using the ATLAS Detector

A search for new phenomena is presented in final states with two leptons and one or no b-tagged jets. The event selection requires the two leptons to have opposite charge, the same flavor (electrons or muons), and a large invariant mass. The analysis is based on the full run-2 proton-proton collision dataset recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1}. No significant deviation from the expected background is observed in the data. Inspired by the B-meson decay anomalies, a four-fermion contact interaction between two quarks (b, s) and two leptons (ee or μμ) is used as a benchmark signal model, which is characterized by the energy scale and coupling, Λ and g_{*}, respectively. Contact interactions with Λ/g_{*} lower than 2.0 (2.4) TeV are excluded for electrons (muons) at the 95% confidence level, still far below the value that is favored by the B-meson decay anomalies. Model-independent limits are set as a function of the minimum dilepton invariant mass, which allow the results to be reinterpreted in various signal scenarios.

[Risk factors of occurrence and treatment failure of peritoneal dialysis-associated polymicrobial peritonitis: a multicenter retrospective study]

OBJECTIVE

To determine the risk factors of occurrence and treatment failure of peritoneal dialysis associatedperitonitis (PDAP) due to polymicrobial infections.

METHODS

We retrospectively collected the clinical data of patients with PDAP from the peritoneal dialysis (PD) centers in 4 general hospitals in Jilin Province from 2013 to 2019. The patients were divided, according to the results of peritoneal dialysate culture, into polymicrobial PDAP group and control group for comparison of the clinical data, treatment outcomes, and long-term prognosis. The independent risk factors of the occurrence and treatment failure of polymicrobial PDAP were explored using multivariate regression analysis.

RESULTS

We recruited a total of 625 patients from the 4 PD centers, among whom 1085 episodes of PDAP were recorded. Polymicrobial PDAP accounted for 7.6% of the total PDAP episodes, and this proportion increased from 5.3% in 2013-2016 to 9.4% in 2017-2019 (P= 0.012). Compared with the control group, polymicrobial PDAP group had higher proportions of elderly patients and patients with refractory PDAP, with greater white blood cell counts in the first-day dialysate and longer course of antibiotic treatment (P < 0.05). The risk of catheter removal and treatment failure (catheter removal or PDAP-related death) in polymicrobial PDAP group was 2.972 times (OR=2.972, 95% CI: 1.634-5.407, P < 0.001) and 2.692 times (OR=2.692, 95% CI: 1.578-4.591, P < 0.001) that in the control group, respectively. The risk of withdrawal from PD (technical failure + all-cause death) was 1.5- fold higher in polymicrobial PDAP group than that in the control group (OR=1.500, 95% CI: 1.085-2.074, P=0.014). Elderly patients (>65 years) had a 1.937-fold higher risk of experiencing polymicrobial PDAP than younger patients (OR=1.937, 95% CI: 1.207-3.109, P= 0.006). Diabetes mellitus (OR=5.554, 95% CI: 1.021-30.201, P=0.047), mixed fungal infeciton (OR=343.687, 95% CI: 21.554- 5480.144, P < 0.001), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection (OR=11.518, 95% CI: 1.632 to 81.310, P=0.014) were associated with increased risks of treatment failure by 4.554, 342.687 and 10.518 times, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The proportion of polymicrobial PDAP in the total PDAP cases tends to increase in recent years. Polymicrobial infection is an independent risk factor of both treatment failure and poor prognosis in patients with PDAP. An old age is an independent risk factor for polymicrobial PDAP, while diabetes mellitus and infections with mixed fungi or Pseudomonas aeruginosa are independent risk factors for treatment failure.

Search for Displaced Leptons in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for charged leptons with large impact parameters using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data from the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented, addressing a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. Results are consistent with the background prediction. This search provides unique sensitivity to long-lived scalar supersymmetric lepton partners (sleptons). For lifetimes of 0.1 ns, selectron, smuon, and stau masses up to 720, 680, and 340  GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, drastically improving on the previous best limits from LEP.

The dynamics of N6-methyladenine RNA modification in interactions between rice and plant viruses

BACKGROUND

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most common RNA modification in eukaryotes and has been implicated as a novel epigenetic marker that is involved in various biological processes. The pattern and functional dissection of m6A in the regulation of several major human viral diseases have already been reported. However, the patterns and functions of m6A distribution in plant disease bursting remain largely unknown.

RESULTS

We analyse the high-quality m6A methylomes in rice plants infected with two devastating viruses. We find that the m6A methylation is mainly associated with genes that are not actively expressed in virus-infected rice plants. We also detect different m6A peak distributions on the same gene, which may contribute to different antiviral modes between rice stripe virus or rice black-stripe dwarf virus infection. Interestingly, we observe increased levels of m6A methylation in rice plant response to virus infection. Several antiviral pathway-related genes, such as RNA silencing-, resistance-, and fundamental antiviral phytohormone metabolic-related genes, are also m6A methylated. The level of m6A methylation is tightly associated with its relative expression levels.

CONCLUSIONS

We revealed the dynamics of m6A modification during the interaction between rice and viruses, which may act as a main regulatory strategy in gene expression. Our investigations highlight the significance of m6A modifications in interactions between plant and viruses, especially in regulating the expression of genes involved in key pathways.

Cucurbit chlorotic yellows virus infecting Rehmannia glutinosa was detected in China

Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. is a perennial herbaceous plant of the family Scrophulariaceae. Its roots can be used as traditional Chinese medicine. The asexual reproduction by vegetative organ of R. glutinosa lead to an increased viral disease that seriously affects its yield and quality (Kwak et al. 2020; Kwak et al. 2018; Ling and Liu 2009). Leaves of R. glutinosa in Wenxian County, Henan Province, China showed symptoms of chlorosis, mosaic and irregular yellow in August 2019. In general, the older leaves at the base or middle of the plant (sample 2# and 5#) first became irregular yellowing, followed by a gradual extend to the leaves at the top (Supplementary Fig. S1A). Six plants (2#, 3#, 5#, 7#, 8#, and 9#) with these symptoms were collected. The total RNA was extracted and its siRNAs were obtained. High-throughput siRNA sequencing (Sangon, Shanghai, China) was performed on Illumina Hiseq 2000 platform with paired-end method after siRNA library construction (NEBNext Ultra II RNA Library Prep Kit, NEB, UK). Sequencing files were treated with Illumina's CASAVA pipeline (version 1.8). The length of the resulting reads with adaptor removed were mostly distributed ranging from 21-24 nt (Supplementary Fig. S1B). The Velvet Software 0.7.31 (k=17) was taken to do de novo assembling, and the contigs (∼13,000, Contigs > 300 bp) were used to perform BLASTN against GenBank database. Two viruses, Rehmannia mosaic virus (ReMV) and cucurbit chlorotic yellows virus (CCYV), were frequently appeared in analyzed six symptomatic samples. To further identify the infection of CCYV to R. glutinosa, ten samples with virus-infected symptoms were randomly collected. Total protein and RNAs were extracted for RT-PCR and ELISA (HALING. Shanghai, China). A specific pair of primers (Supplementary Table S1) were designed to amplify the 753-bp length coat protein (CP) gene of CCYV. The result showed that two samples appeared a specific band of expected size on the agarose gel, which indicated that they were infected by CCYV (Supplementary Fig. S1C, Upper panel). The same result was obtained by ELISA assay (Supplementary Fig. S1D). The amplified CP fragment of CCYV was recycled and purified by TIANgel Midi Purification Kit (Tiangen, Beijing, China), followed by cloned into pMD19-T (TaKaRa, Dalian, China) and transformed into E. coli DH5a.Ten separate clones were selected and sequenced (Sangon, Shanghai, China) after PCR verification. The obtained sequences (GenBank accession No. MW521380 & MW521381) were analyzed by BLASTN and bioEdit software (version 7.2.3). The results showed 100% identity with the CCYV CP sequences that mainly derived from infected cucurbit. To confirm the occurrence and distribution of CCYV and ReMV in planting area, the other twenty-four samples (20 with chlorosis and stunt symptoms and 4 with invisible symptoms) were randomly collected for RT-PCR in different regions of Henan Province (Supplementary Table S1). The results showed that the CCYV and ReMV infection rate were 20.5% and 61.7%, respectively. Co-infection of the CCYV and ReMV was 5.8% in fields (Supplementary Table S2). In sum, these results indicated the CCYV can naturally infect R. glutinosa in China. CCYV is transmitted by white-fly in a semi-persistent manner and mainly damages cucurbits (Orfanidou et al. 2017). CCYV has been discovered in many places (Huang et al. 2010). To date, there is no report about CCYV infecting R. glutinosa in nature. This is the first report of CCYV naturally infect R. glutinosa in China.

Longitudinal Flow Decorrelations in Xe+Xe Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes v_{n} for n=2-4 in Xe+Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44  TeV is obtained using 3  μb^{-1} of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v_{3} and v_{4} is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (p_{T}) requirements on final-state particles, but for v_{2} a strong centrality and p_{T} dependence is seen. When compared with the results from Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV, the longitudinal decorrelation signal in midcentral Xe+Xe collisions is found to be larger for v_{2}, but smaller for v_{3}. Current hydrodynamic models reproduce the ratios of the v_{n} measured in Xe+Xe collisions to those in Pb+Pb collisions but fail to describe the magnitudes and trends of the ratios of longitudinal flow decorrelations between Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb. The results on the system-size dependence provide new insights and an important lever arm to separate effects of the longitudinal structure of the initial state from other early and late time effects in heavy-ion collisions.

Search for Dark Matter Produced in Association with a Dark Higgs Boson Decaying into W^{±}W^{∓} or ZZ in Fully Hadronic Final States from sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions Recorded with the ATLAS Detector

Several extensions of the Standard Model predict the production of dark matter particles at the LHC. An uncharted signature of dark matter particles produced in association with VV=W^{±}W^{∓} or ZZ pairs from a decay of a dark Higgs boson s is searched for using 139  fb^{-1} of pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The s→V(qq[over ¯])V(qq[over ¯]) decays are reconstructed with a novel technique aimed at resolving the dense topology from boosted VV pairs using jets in the calorimeter and tracking information. Dark Higgs scenarios with m_{s}>160  GeV are excluded.

Medium-Induced Modification of Z-Tagged Charged Particle Yields in Pb+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The yield of charged particles opposite to a Z boson with large transverse momentum (p_{T}) is measured in 260  pb^{-1} of pp and 1.7  nb^{-1} of Pb+Pb collision data at 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z boson tag is used to select hard-scattered partons with specific kinematics, and to observe how their showers are modified as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma created in Pb+Pb collisions. Compared with pp collisions, charged-particle yields in Pb+Pb collisions show significant modifications as a function of charged-particle p_{T} in a way that depends on event centrality and Z boson p_{T}. The data are compared with a variety of theoretical calculations and provide new information about the medium-induced energy loss of partons in a p_{T} regime difficult to measure through other channels.

Observation and Measurement of Forward Proton Scattering in Association with Lepton Pairs Produced via the Photon Fusion Mechanism at ATLAS

The observation of forward proton scattering in association with lepton pairs (e^{+}e^{-}+p or μ^{+}μ^{-}+p) produced via photon fusion is presented. The scattered proton is detected by the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer, while the leptons are reconstructed by the central ATLAS detector. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV are analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6  fb^{-1}. A total of 57 (123) candidates in the ee+p (μμ+p) final state are selected, allowing the background-only hypothesis to be rejected with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations in each channel. Proton-tagging techniques are introduced for cross-section measurements in the fiducial detector acceptance, corresponding to σ_{ee+p}=11.0±2.6(stat)±1.2(syst)±0.3(lumi) and σ_{μμ+p}=7.2±1.6(stat)±0.9(syst)±0.2(lumi)  fb in the dielectron and dimuon channel, respectively.

Search for Heavy Resonances Decaying into a Photon and a Hadronically Decaying Higgs Boson in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1}. The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson (H→bb[over ¯]) candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two b quarks in the single jet. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for narrow spin-1 resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon in the resonance mass range from 0.7 to 4 TeV, cross-section times branching fractions are excluded between 11.6 fb and 0.11 fb at a 95% confidence level.

Search for Higgs Boson Decays into a Z Boson and a Light Hadronically Decaying Resonance Using 13 TeV pp Collision Data from the ATLAS Detector

A search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light resonance in two-lepton plus jet events is performed, using a pp collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1} collected at sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The resonance considered is a light boson with a mass below 4 GeV from a possible extended scalar sector or a charmonium state. Multivariate discriminants are used for the event selection and for evaluating the mass of the light resonance. No excess of events above the expected background is found. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to a Z boson and the signal resonance, with values in the range 17-340 pb (16_{-5}^{+6}-320_{-90}^{+130}  pb) for the different light spin-0 boson mass and branching fraction hypotheses, and with values of 110 and 100 pb (100_{-30}^{+40} and 100_{-30}^{+40}  pb) for the η_{c} and J/ψ hypotheses, respectively.

Global risk factors of contrast-induced acute kidney injury: systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

Administration of iodinated contrast is common but may be associated with contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI), particularly in at-risk patients. There is no recent systematic review of potentially modifiable risk factors.

Methods

We searched MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (to 30 th June 2019) for observational studies assessing risk factors associated with CI-AKI. Twelve potentially modifiable risk factors were finally included in this thematic review and meta-analysis. Random or fixed meta-analysis was performed to derive the adjusted odds ratio (aOR), and the population attributable risk (PAR) was calculated for each risk factor globally and by region.

Findings

We included 157 studies (2,297,863 participants). The global incidence of CI-AKI was 5.4%. The potentially modifiable risk factors included high contrast volume (PAR 33%), eight cardiovascular risk factors (diuretic use, multivessel coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndrome, hypertension, hypotension, heart failure, reduced left ventricular ejection fraction and intra-aortic balloon pump use) (combined PAR 76.2%) and three noncardiovascular risk factors (renal dysfunction, diabetes mellitus and anaemia) (combined PAR 47.4%) with geographical differences.

Dijet Resonance Search with Weak Supervision Using sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions in the ATLAS Detector

This Letter describes a search for narrowly resonant new physics using a machine-learning anomaly detection procedure that does not rely on signal simulations for developing the analysis selection. Weakly supervised learning is used to train classifiers directly on data to enhance potential signals. The targeted topology is dijet events and the features used for machine learning are the masses of the two jets. The resulting analysis is essentially a three-dimensional search A→BC, for m_{A}∼O(TeV), m_{B},m_{C}∼O(100  GeV) and B, C are reconstructed as large-radius jets, without paying a penalty associated with a large trials factor in the scan of the masses of the two jets. The full run 2 sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision dataset of 139  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used for the search. There is no significant evidence of a localized excess in the dijet invariant mass spectrum between 1.8 and 8.2 TeV. Cross-section limits for narrow-width A, B, and C particles vary with m_{A}, m_{B}, and m_{C}. For example, when m_{A}=3  TeV and m_{B}≳200  GeV, a production cross section between 1 and 5 fb is excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on m_{C}. For certain masses, these limits are up to 10 times more sensitive than those obtained by the inclusive dijet search. These results are complementary to the dedicated searches for the case that B and C are standard model bosons.

CP Properties of Higgs Boson Interactions with Top Quarks in the tt[over ¯]H and tH Processes Using H→γγ with the ATLAS Detector

A study of the charge conjugation and parity (CP) properties of the interaction between the Higgs boson and top quarks is presented. Higgs bosons are identified via the diphoton decay channel (H→γγ), and their production in association with a top quark pair (tt[over ¯]H) or single top quark (tH) is studied. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Assuming a CP-even coupling, the tt[over ¯]H process is observed with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. The measured cross section times H→γγ branching ratio is 1.64_{-0.36}^{+0.38}(stat)_{-0.14}^{+0.17}(sys)  fb, and the measured rate for tt[over ¯]H is 1.43_{-0.31}^{+0.33}(stat)_{-0.15}^{+0.21}(sys) times the Standard Model expectation. The tH production process is not observed and an upper limit on its rate of 12 times the Standard Model expectation is set. A CP-mixing angle greater (less) than 43 (-43)° is excluded at 95% confidence level.

Search for Heavy Higgs Bosons Decaying into Two Tau Leptons with the ATLAS Detector Using pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons is performed using the LHC Run 2 data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. The search for heavy resonances is performed over the mass range 0.2-2.5 TeV for the τ^{+}τ^{-} decay with at least one τ-lepton decaying into final states with hadrons. The data are in good agreement with the background prediction of the standard model. In the M_{h}^{125} scenario of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, values of tanβ>8 and tanβ>21 are excluded at the 95% confidence level for neutral Higgs boson masses of 1.0 and 1.5 TeV, respectively, where tanβ is the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs doublets.

First report of vicia cryptic virus M infecting cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) in China

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is a crop grown worldwide as a protein source for food and feed (Lonardi et al. 2019). During the summer of 2019, noticeable virus-like symptoms such as mosaic, leaf narrowing, stunt and chlorosis were observed on cowpeas 'Xianfeng' planted in Yangzhou city and its suburbs, Jiangsu Province, East China (Supplementary Fig. S1A). The total RNA was extracted from both symptomatic and asymptomatic plants by RNAiso Plus (TaKaRa, Dalian, China) and sRNAs were separated and recovered by gel purification. The NEBNext Ultra II RNA Library Prep Kit for Illumina (NEB, UK) was used for sRNA library construction. The library was sequenced with the paired-end method on the Illumina Hiseq 2000 platform (Sangon, Shanghai, China). The obtained sequencing files were treated with Illumina's CASAVA pipeline (version 1.8). The reads resulting from sequencing were further processed with adaptor removing, and the most abundant sRNAs were distributed from 21-24 nt (Supplementary Fig. S1B). The de novo assembly was performed with the Velvet Software 0.7.31 (k=17), and the obtained contigs (∼12,000, Contigs > 500 bp) were used perform a BLAST search against the GenBank viral reference database. Fifteen contigs with high similarities of 98.61% to 99.64% and coverage of 94% to the reported vicia cryptic virus M (VCV-M) genomic sequence (GenBank accession No. EU371896) were identified. Other common viruses, such as cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV), and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), were also included (Unpublished).VCV-M belongs to the genus Amalgavirus, family Amalgaviridae (Nibert et al. 2016). Amalgaviruses are efficiently transmitted through seeds but not mechanically or by grafting (Sabanadzovic et al. 2009). To confirm the presence of VCV-M in the collected plants, total RNA was isolated and the first-strand cDNA was prepared by M-MLV reverse transcriptase (TaKaRa, Dalian, China) using specific primers. Primers (Supplementary Table SI) were designed according to the assembled contigs. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to amplify the targeted genomic fragment of VCV-M, and the predicted 3,434 bp amplicon was obtained from five cowpea plants (Supplementary Fig. S1C). A randomly selected amplicon was purified with the TIANgel Midi Purification Kit (Tiangen, Beijing, China) and cloned to pMD19-T (TaKaRa, Dalian, China) for sequencing (Sangon, Shanghai, China). The obtained consensus sequence (GenBank accession No. MN015673) was analyzed and showed 99.39% similarity with the reported VCV-M genome (GenBank accession No. EU371896). To confirm the occurrence and distribution of VCV-M infection, 17 cowpea samples of different cultivars (4 with yellowing and stunt symptoms and 13 without visible symptoms) were collected from different regions of Jiangsu Province and tested using RT-PCR with specific primers (Supplementary Fig. S1C). They were further tested by western blot (WB) detection as described previously (Zhang et al. 2017). Specific CPVCV-M antiserum was obtained by immunizing the New Zealand white rabbits with the prokaryotic expressed recombinant His-CPVCV-M protein (HuaBio, Hangzhou, China). WB results (Supplementary Fig. S1D) and RT-PCR resulted in five samples that were positive out of a total of 17 samples, suggesting the VCV-M infection is common in cowpea plants. To determine whether the VCV-M was the causal agent or contributor to the observed symptoms, we investigated the presence of other cowpea-infecting viruses (CPMV, CABMV, and CMV) in these samples through RT-PCR with specific primers for each virus (Supplementary Table SI) and ELISA with commercial kits. RT-PCR and ELISA detection results showed mixed infection by VCV-M/CPMV (n = 1), VCV-M/CABMV (n = 1), VCV-M/CMV (n = 1), or VCV-M/CPMV/CABMV/CMV (n = 2). The VCV-M/CABMV co-infected sample was asymptomatic. Taken together, the symptoms on cowpea could not be attributed to one particular viral infection. To further confirm VCV-M infection, we selected four samples (two positive and two negative, as determined by RT-PCR and WB) for northern blot assay. The probe was prepared with the DIG Random Labeling and Detection Kit I (POD) for color detection with DAB (BOSTER, Wuhan, China). The Northern blot assay was performed as previously described with minor modifications (Prosniak et al. 2001). The results (Supplementary Fig. S1E) confirmed the accuracy of previous RT-PCR and WB analyses. To our knowledge, this is the first report of VCV-M infection of cowpea plants in China. Although it is commonly accepted that VCV-M causes no symptoms, the roles of such viruses in affecting their hosts' biological characteristics, which are often influenced by co-infection conditions, remains unclear.

Measurement of the Lund Jet Plane Using Charged Particles in 13 TeV Proton-Proton Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

The prevalence of hadronic jets at the LHC requires that a deep understanding of jet formation and structure is achieved in order to reach the highest levels of experimental and theoretical precision. There have been many measurements of jet substructure at the LHC and previous colliders, but the targeted observables mix physical effects from various origins. Based on a recent proposal to factorize physical effects, this Letter presents a double-differential cross-section measurement of the Lund jet plane using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector using jets with transverse momentum above 675 GeV. The measurement uses charged particles to achieve a fine angular resolution and is corrected for acceptance and detector effects. Several parton shower Monte Carlo models are compared with the data. No single model is found to be in agreement with the measured data across the entire plane.
