Abstract
Emissive ionic supramolecular frameworks are designed by associating tetraphenylethylene-based tetra-cationic units and di-anionic molybdenum or tetra-anionic rhenium octahedral clusters. Obtained structures were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The emission properties of the hybrids were investigated as dry powders or in various solvents by one photon and two photon absorption leading to a O2 concentration dependent luminescence color for the Mo based hybrid.

Abstract
Evidence for photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer from the excited state of the [Mo6I8Cl6]2- electron-rich cluster to polyoxometalates (POMs) is reported. We demonstrate that the global charge density of POMs affects the efficiency of electron transfer. This work paves the way for the rational design of photocatalytic systems using cluster-based complexes as robust noble-metal-free photosensitizers.

Game of Crowns: Na + Is Coming! Red NIR-Emissive Hybrid Liquid Crystals Containing Discotic Crown Ethers and Na 2Mo 6X 8iCl 6 (X i = Cl or Br). Abstract
Molecular or supramolecular materials that can self-organize into columns such as discotic liquid crystals are of interest for several applications in the field of optoelectronics. We show in this work that red near-infrared (NIR)-emissive metal cluster compounds of general formula Na2Mo6X8iCl6 (Xi = Cl or Br) can be readily complexed with discotic liquid crystals containing a crown ether. Three cavity sizes have been tested with crown ethers bearing 4, 5, or 6 oxygen atoms. In all cases, 1:1 complexes were formed, thanks to the well-known supramolecular interactions existing between the Na+ cations of the metal cluster salt and the crown ether derivatives. All obtained hybrids are homogeneous, emit in the red NIR region, and show liquid crystalline properties on a wider temperature range than their precursors. Charge transport properties have been investigated by using a space charge limited current device. Obtained results demonstrate that metal cluster compounds can enhance the charge carrier mobility by 5 orders of magnitude compared to the native discotic organic ligands. Considering that the presented organic crown ether derivatives are not the best candidates to design optoelectronic devices because of their inherently low conductivity, but that similar compounds were developed to design proton conductive porous framework, our results open promising perspectives for the use of metal cluster compounds in devices dedicated to such a field.

Abstract
The lacunary monocharged anion [{Mo6Cli8}Cla5□a]- presents concomitantly a strongly electrophilic site and a nucleophilic one. This Janus character in terms of reactivity is confirmed by its gas phase reaction with [Br6Cs4K]- to form [{Mo6Cli8}Cla5Bra]2- and by its unusual self-reactivity leading to [{Mo6Cli8}Cla6]2- dianions.

Abstract
Red-NIR luminescent polymers are principally obtained from petroleum-based derivatives in which emitters, usually a critical raw material such as rare-earth or platinum group metal ions, are embedded. Considering the strong ecological impact of their synthesis and the major risk of fossil fuel energy shortage, there is an urgent need to find alternatives. We describe a luminescent nanocomposite based on red-NIR phosphorescent molybdenum nanoclusters, namely Cs2Mo6I8(OCOC2F5)6, embedded in an eco-friendly cellulose biopolymer matrix that is obtained by a simple solvent casting technique. While homogeneity is kept up to 20 wt% of cluster complex doping, annealing hybrids leads to a large increase of their emission efficiency, as demonstrated by quantum yield measurements.

Abstract
New nanocomposite materials with UV-NIR blocking properties and hues ranging from green to brown were prepared by integrating inorganic tantalum octahedral cluster building blocks prepared via solid-state chemistry in a PMMA matrix. After the synthesis by the solid-state chemical reaction of the K4[{Ta6Bri12}Bra6] ternary halide, built-up from [{Ta6Bri12}Bra6]4- anionic building blocks, and potassium cations, the potassium cations were replaced by functional organic cations (Kat+) bearing a methacrylate function. The resulting intermediate, (Kat)2[{Ta6Bri12}Bra6], was then incorporated homogeneously by copolymerization with MMA into transparent PMMA matrices to form a brown transparent hybrid composite Ta@PMMAbrown. The color of the composites was tuned by controlling the charge and consequently the oxidation state of the cluster building block. Ta@PMMAgreen was obtained through the two-electron reduction of the [{Ta6Bri12}Bra6]2- building blocks from Ta@PMMAbrown in solution. Indeed, the control of the oxidation state of the Ta6 cluster inorganic building blocks occurred inside the copolymer, which not only allowed the tuning of the optical properties of the composite in the visible region but also allowed the tuning of its UV and NIR blocking properties.

Abstract
We report the first intramolecular excimer photoswitching induced by molecular motion within a dithienylethene (DTE) molecule without destructive readout. The photochromic compound DTE bears two pyrene chromophores, judiciously positioned to face each other in the DTE's open form. The close proximity of the pyrenes in the open form is confirmed by NMR experiments and geometry optimization. Intense pyrene excimer luminescence is recorded, upon both one- and two-photon excitation (OPE and TPE). The photocyclization reaction of the DTE core induces a molecular motion of one pyrene moiety which thus prevents the possibility of formation of an excimer. Our DTE-based pyrene is stable upon TPE irradiation and shows a high photocyclization quantum yield. Such property specifications allow us to report the original nondestructive readout fluorescence by alternating exposure to OPE and TPE.

Abstract
The ability of cancer cells to develop resistance to anti-cancer drugs, known as multidrug resistance, remains a major cause of tumor recurrence and cancer metastasis. This work explores the double mechanism of toxicity of (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) acid (PLGA) nanoparticles encapsulating a molybdenum cluster compound, namely Cs2[{Mo6I8}(OOCC2F5)6] (CMIF). Hemocompatibility and biocompatibility assays show the safe potential of CMIF loaded nanoparticles (CNPs) as delivery systems intended for tumor targeting for PDT of ovarian cancer with a slight hemolytic activity and a lack of toxicity up to 50 µM CMIF concentration. Cellular uptake shows a preferential uptake of CNPs in lysosomes, which is not interfering with CMIF activity. The double mechanism of CNPs consists in a production of ROS and a DNA damage activity, from 5 µM and 0.5 µM respectively (CMIF concentration). The cellular death mechanism comprises 80% of necrosis and 20% of direct apoptosis by direct DNA damages. This work confirms CMIF loaded PLGA nanoparticles as an efficient and relevant delivery system for PDT.

Abstract
γ-Cyclodextrin (γ-CD) interacts in aqueous solution with octahedral halide clusters Na2[{M6X8}Cl6] (M = Mo, W; X = Br, I) to form robust inclusion supramolecular complexes [{M6X8}Cl6@2γ-CD]2-. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed two conformational organizations within the adduct depending on the nature of the inner halide X within the {M6X8} core. Using 35Cl NMR and UV-vis as complementary techniques, the kinetics of the hydrolysis process were shown to increase with the following order: {W6I8} < {W6Br8} ≈ {Mo6I8} < {Mo6Br8}. The complexation with γ-CD drastically enhances the hydrolytic stability of luminescent [{M6X8}Cl6]2- cluster-based units, which was quantitatively proved by the same techniques. The resulting host-guest complexation provides a protective shell against contact with water and offers promising horizons for octahedral clusters in biology as revealed by the low dark cytotoxicity and cellular uptake.

Abstract
We report the straightforward one‐pot synthesis of novel 5‐ or 6‐membered P‐heterocycles featuring an internal ylidic bond: P‐containing acenaphthylenes and phenanthrenes. The stability of the compounds tolerates post‐functionalization through direct arylation to introduce electron‐rich/poor substituents and the synthetic strategy is also compatible with the preparation of more elaborate polyaromatic scaffolds such as acenes and helicenes. Using a joint experimental (X‐ray analysis, optical and redox properties) and theoretical approach, we perform a full structure–property relationships study on these new platforms. In particular, we show that molecular engineering allows not only tuning their absorption/emission across the entire visible range but also endowing them with chiroptical or non‐linear optical properties, making them valuable dyes for a large panel of photonic or opto‐electronic applications.

Highly Tunable Circularly Polarized Emission of an Aggregation-Induced Emission Dye Using Helical Nano- and Microfilaments as Supramolecular Chiral Templates. Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-based circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been recognized as a promising pathway for developing chiroptical materials with high luminescence dissymmetry factors (|glum|). Here, we propose a method for the construction of a thermally tunable CPL-active system based on a supramolecular self-assembly approach that utilizes helical nano- or microfilament templates in conjunction with an AIE dye. The CPL properties of the ensuing ensembles are predominantly determined by the intrinsic geometric differences among the various filament templates such as their overall dimensions (width, height, and helical pitch) and the area fraction of the exposed aromatic segments or sublayers. The proposed mechanism is based on the collective data acquired by absorption, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence, absolute quantum yield, and CPL measurements. The highest |glum| value for the most promising dual-modulated helical nanofilament templates in the present series was further enhanced, reaching up to |glum| = 0.25 by confinement in the appropriate diameter of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) nanochannels. It is envisioned that this methodology will afford new insights into the design of temperature-rate indicators or anti-counterfeiting tags using a combination of structural color by the nano- and microfilament templates and the AIE property of the guest dye.

Abstract
Two series of flavylium triflates carrying alkoxy side chains in the A‐ring (benzo unit of chromylium salt) and thioethers in the B ring (phenyl unit) (On‐Fla‐Sm) as well as thioethers at both A and B ring (Sn‐Fla‐Sm) were synthesized in order to understand the effect of thioether functionalization on their self‐assembly and electronic properties. Concentration‐dependent and diffusion ordered (DOSY) NMR experiments of O1‐iV‐Fla‐S3 indicate the formation of columnar H‐aggregates in solution with antiparallel intracolumnar stacking of the AC unit (chromylium) of the flavylium triflate, in agreement with the solid state structure of O1‐V‐Fla‐S1. Thioether substitution on the B ring changes the linear optical properties in solution, whereas it has no effect on the A ring. According to differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction bulk self‐assembly of these ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) depends on the total number of side chains, yielding SmA and LamCol phases for ILCs with 2–3 chains and Colro, Colh phases for ILCs with 3–6 chains. Thus, we demonstrated that thioethers are a useful design tool for ILCs with tailored properties.

Abstract
Inorganic red‐NIR emissive materials are particularly relevant in many fields like optoelectronic, bioimaging or solar cells. Benefiting from their emission in devices implies their integration in easy‐to‐handle materials like liquid crystals, whose long‐range ordering and self‐healing abilities could be exploited and influence emission. Herein, we present red‐NIR emissive hybrid materials obtained with phosphorescent octahedral molybdenum cluster anions electrostatically associated with amphiphilic guanidinium minidendrons. Polarized optical microscopy and X‐ray analysis show that while the minidendron chloride salts self‐organize into columnar phases, their association with the dianionic metal cluster leads to layered phases. Steady‐state and time‐resolved emission investigations demonstrate the influence of the minidendron alkyl chain length on the phosphorescence of the metal cluster core.

Abstract
Here, we demonstrate a facile and scalable preparation via sol-gel chemistry of hybrid polyurea gels containing various amounts of a phosphorescent inorganic octahedral molybdenum cluster-based ternary salt, namely Cs2Mo6Br14. The influence of the Cs2Mo6Br14 content (1-10 wt%) on the polyurea matrix and its physical properties are studied in depth by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray fluorescence microanalysis (μ-XRF). Regardless of the amount of cluster loaded into the polyurea, the integrity of these species was preserved and their dispersion is homogeneous as shown by μ-XRF mapping. Spectroscopic-structural analyses reveal a significant increase of the chain mobility (glass transition temperature Tg) from -65 °C to -55 °C after the incorporation of Cs2Mo6Br14 (DSC analyses). The FTIR studies show that the homogeneity of the dispersion is ensured by supramolecular interactions between the ether-type oxygen atoms of the PEO chains and the cluster compound. Photoluminescence studies show that the metal cluster emission properties are well retained within the host matrix whatever the loaded content. Such a combination of materials demonstrates the feasibility to fabricate a rubber NIR-emitting device. Moreover, the loaded polyurea is also able to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon irradiation in the UV-A region, opening new perspectives as versatile membranes in the field of photodynamic therapy.

Cyclodextrin-Assisted Hierarchical Aggregation of Dawson-type Polyoxometalate in the Presence of {Re 6Se 8} Based Clusters. Inorg Chem 2020; 59:11396-11406. Abstract
The association of metallic clusters (CLUS) and polyoxometalates (POM) into hierarchical architectures is achieved using γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) as a supramolecular connector. The new self-assembled systems, so-called CLUSPOM, are formed from Dawson-type polyoxometalate [P2W18O62]6- and electron-rich rhenium clusters. It is worth noting that a cluster-based cation [{Re6Se8}(H2O)6]2+ on one hand and a cluster-based anion on the other hand [{Re6Se8}(CN)6]4- can be associated with the anionic POM. In the absence of the supramolecular connector, a "CLUSPOM salt" was obtained from aqueous solution of the cationic cluster and the polyoxometalate. In this solid, the arrangement between the polymetallic building blocks is mainly governed by long-range Coulombic interactions. In the presence of γ-CD, the Dawson anion and the cationic cluster are assembled differently, forming a hierarchical supramolecular solid, K2[{Re6Se8}(H2O)6]2{[P2W18O62]@2γ-CD}·42H2O, where the organic macrocycle acts as a ditopic linker between the inorganic building blocks. In such an edifice, the short-range molecular recognition dominates the long-range Coulombic interactions leading to a specific three-dimensional organization. Interestingly, the assembling of anionic POM [P2W18O62]6- with the anionic rhenium cluster [{Re6Se8}(CN)6]4- is also achieved with γ-CD despite the repulsive forces between the nanosized anions. The resulting solid, K10{[{Re6Se8}(CN)6]@2γ-CD}[P2W18O62]·33H2O, is built from 1:2 inclusion complexes {[{Re6Se8}(CN)6]@2γ-CD}4- linked by a POM unit interacting with the exterior wall of the organic macrocycle. Multinuclear NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering investigations support supramolecular preorganization in aqueous solution prior to crystallization.

Abstract
In ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) tilted mesophases such as SmC required for electro-optic devices are quite rare. We report a design concept that induced the SmC phase and enabled de Vries-like behaviour in ILCs. For this purpose, we synthesized and characterized a library of ILC derivatives ImR(On,Ym)X which consist of a rigid central fluorenone core containing an alkoxy or thioether side chain and connected via a flexible spacer to an imidazolium head group. The mesomorphic properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Temperature-dependent measurements of smectic layer spacing d by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and of optical tilt angles by POM demonstrate that ILCs ImR(On,Ym)X undergo SmA–SmC phase transitions with maximum layer contraction values between 0.4% and 2.1%. Abstract
Passing from fossil energy sources to renewable ones, meanwhile answering the increasing world energy demand, will require innovative and low-cost technologies. Smart photovoltaic windows could fulfill our needs in this matter. Their transparency can be controlled to manage solar energy and regulate interior temperature and illumination. Here, we present the one-pot synthesis of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs), in which highly red-NIR phosphorescent transition metal clusters are selectively embedded, either in the polymer, in the liquid crystal, or in both phases. The PDLC matrix is used as a tunable waveguide to transfer the emitted light from nanoclusters to the edge of the device, where solar cells could be placed to convert it into electricity. Edge emission is obtained in both "off" and "on" states, with a maximum intensity for the scattering "off" one. These doped PDLCs showing photo-activity features and high stability under voltage represent key stepping stones for integration in buildings, displays, and many other technologies.

Abstract
Thermotropic ionic liquid crystals based on the flavylium scaffold have been synthesized and studied for their structure-properties relationship for the first time. The mesogens were probed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Low numbers of alkoxy side chains resulted in smectic (SmA) and lamello-columnar (LamCol ) phases, whereas higher substituted flavylium salts showed Colro as well as ordered and disordered columnar (Colho , Colhd ) mesophases. Mesophase width ranged from 13 K to 220 K, giving access to room temperature liquid crystals. The optical properties of the synthesized compounds were probed towards absorption and emission properties. Strong absorption with maxima between 444 and 507 nm was observed, and some chromophores were highly emissive with quantum yields up to 99 %. Ultimately, mesogenic and dye properties were examined by temperature-dependent emissive experiments in the solid state.

Abstract
Transparent optical thin films have recently attracted a growing interest for functional window applications. In this study, highly visible transparent nanocomposite films with ultraviolet (UV)-near-infrared (NIR)-blocking capabilities are reported. Such films, composed of Mo6 and Nb6 octahedral metal atom clusters (MC) and polymethylmethacrylate polymer (PMMA), were prepared by electrophoretic deposition on indium tin oxide-coated glass (ITO glass). PMMA was found to improve both the chemical and physical stability of Mo6 and Nb6 MCs, resulting in a relatively homogeneous distribution of the clusters within the PMMA matrix, as seen by microstructural observations. The optical absorption spectrum of these transparent MC@polymer nanocomposite films was marked by contributions from their Mo6 and Nb6-based clusters (absorption in the UV range) and from the ITO layer on silica glass (absorption in the NIR range). Mo6@PMMA nanocomposite films also exhibited excellent photoluminescence properties, which were preserved even after exposure to 50°C at a relative humidity of 70% for one month. These films cumulate high transparency in the visible range with remarkable UV-NIR blocking properties and represent interesting candidates for functional glass application.

Abstract
Crown ethers and their derivatives are versatile building blocks for the design of supramolecular materials. They can be functionalized at will and are well known for their abilities to complex with alkali cations. Here, we show that emissive lanthanide free hybrid materials can be generated by using such building blocks. The organic tribenzo[18]crown-6 central core was functionalized via six-fold Suzuki cross-coupling as a key reaction with three o-terphenyl units which could be converted into their corresponding triphenylenes by the Scholl reaction, leading to novel liquid-crystalline columnar materials. Selected tribenzo[18]crown-6 o-terphenyls could interact with emissive ternary metal cluster compound salts to generate hybrid materials combining the properties of both moieties. Due to synergistic effects and despite the anisometry of the cluster compounds, individual properties such as liquid-crystalline phase stability of the organic part and emission abilities of its inorganic counter-part are enhanced in the hybrid compounds.

Abstract
Water-soluble salts of anionic [Re6 Q8 (CN)6 ]4- (Q=S, Se, Te) chalcogenide octahedral rhenium clusters react with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) producing a new type of inclusion compounds. Crystal structures determined through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed supramolecular host-guest assemblies resulting from close encapsulations of the octahedral cluster within two γ-CDs. Interestingly, nature of the inner Q ligands influences strongly the host-guest conformation. The cluster [Re6 S8 (CN)6 ]4- interacts preferentially with the primary faces of the γ-CD while the bulkier clusters [Re6 Se8 (CN)6 ]4- and [Re6 Te8 (CN)6 ]4- exhibit specific interactions with the secondary faces of the cyclic host. Furthermore, analysis of the crystal packing reveals additional supramolecular interactions that lead to 2D infinite arrangements with [Re6 S8 (CN)6 ]4- or to 1D "bamboo-like" columns with [Re6 Se8 (CN)6 ]4- and [Re6 Te8 (CN)6 ]4- species. Solution studies, using multinuclear NMR methods, ESI-MS and Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) corroborates nicely the solid-state investigations showing that supramolecular pre-organization is retained in aqueous solution even in diluted conditions. Furthermore, ITC analysis showed that host-guest stability increases significantly ongoing from S to Te. At last, we report herein that deep inclusion alters significantly the intrinsic physical-chemical properties of the octahedral clusters, allowing redox tuning and near IR luminescence enhancement.

Abstract
Herein, two new octahedral molybdenum cyanide cluster compounds, namely [{Ni(NH3)6}4{Ni2(NH3)8}1][Mo6Br6Q2(CN)6]3·12H2O, Q = S (1) and Se (2), have been synthesized as single crystals by slow diffusion of a solution of nickel chloride into aqueous ammonia solutions of a K2Cs2[Mo6Br6Q2(CN)6] molybdenum cyanide cluster-based compound. Both 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. They are isostructural and crystallize in the cubic system (Im3[combining macron]m (no. 229); Z = 2, a = 18.147(1) Å, and V = 5976(1) Å3 and a = 18.188(2) Å and V = 6016(2) Å3 for 1 and 2, respectively). 1 and 2 are based on the association of [Mo6Bri6Qi2(CN)a6]4- (Q = S, Se) cluster anions with Ni2+ dimer-based cubic [Ni2(NH3)8]4+ and octahedral [Ni(NH3)6]2+ cations. The structure is based on 2-fold interpenetrated [{Ni(NH3)6}4{Ni2(NH3)8}1][Mo6Br6Q2(CN)6]3 frameworks related to each other by [½, ½, ½] translation. The unit cell is based on a body-centered cubic framework of cubic [Ni2(NH3)8]4+. The [Mo6Bri6Qi2(CN)a6]4- (Q = S, Se) cluster units are located in the middle of the edges and at the center of the faces of the cell. The [{Ni(NH3)6}]2+ cations are located at the center of the cubes of the a/2 edge. The dimers [Ni2(NH3)8]4+ are stabilized by hydrogen bonds between the cyanide ligands of the cluster unit and the hydrogen atoms of the ammonia molecules. Both compounds exhibit a weak antiferromagnetic coupling within the [Ni2(NH3)8]4+ dimer entities at low temperatures together with a paramagnetic behavior originating from the cations of the octahedral [{Ni(NH3)6}]2+ complexes.

Abstract
We report the photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) properties of face-capped [Mo6Xi8La6]2- (X = Cl, Br, I; L = organic or inorganic ligands) cluster units. We show that the emission of Mo6 metal atom clusters depends not only on the nature of X and L ligands bound to the cluster and counter-cations, but also on the excitation source. Seven members of the AxMo6Xi8La6 series (A = Cs+, (n-C4H9)4N+, NH4+) were selected to evaluate the influence of counter-cations and ligands on de-excitation mechanisms responsible for multicomponent emission of cluster units. This study evaluates the ageing of each member of the series, which is crucial for further energy conversion applications (photovoltaic, lighting, water splitting, etc.).

Abstract
The development of phosphor devices free of heavy metal or rare earth elements is an important issue for environmental reasons and energy efficiency. Different mixtures of ZnO nanocrystals with Cs2Mo6I8(OOC2F5)6 cluster compound (CMIF) dispersed into polyvinylpyrrolidone matrix have been prepared by very simple and low cost solution chemistry. The resulting solutions have been used to fabricate highly transparent and luminescent films by dip coating free of heavy metal or rare earth elements. The luminescence properties of solution and dip-coated films were investigated. The luminescence of such a system is strongly dependent on the ratios between ZnO and CMIF amounts, the excitation wavelength and the nature of the system. By varying these two parameters (ratio and wavelength), a large variety of colors, from blue to red as well as white, can be achieved. In addition, differences in the luminescence properties have been observed between solutions and thin films as well as changes of CMIF emission band maximum wavelength. This may suggest some possible interactions between the different luminophore centers, such as energy transfer or ligands exchange on the Mo6 clusters.

Abstract
Inorganic phosphorescent octahedral metal nanoclusters fill the gap between metal complexes and nanoparticles. They are finite groups of metal atoms linked by metal-metal bonds, with an exact composition and structure at the nanometer scale. As their phosphorescence internal quantum efficiency can approach 100%, they represent a very attractive class of molecular building blocks to design hybrid nanomaterials dedicated to light energy conversion, optoelectronic, display, lighting, or theragnostic applications. They are obtained as AnM6X(i)8X(a)6 ternary salt powders (A = alkali cation, M = Mo, Re, W, X(i): halogen inner ligand, X(a) = halogen apical ligand) by high temperature solid state synthesis (750-1200 °C). However, their ceramic-like behavior has largely restricted their use as functional components in the past. Since these last two decades, several groups, including ours, started to tackle the challenge of integrating them in easy-to-process materials. Within this context, we have extensively explored the nanocluster ternary salt specificities to develop a new class of self-organized hybrid organic-inorganic nanomaterials known as clustomesogens. These materials, combine the specific properties of nanoclusters (magnetic, electronic, luminescence) with the anisotropy-related properties of liquid crystals (LCs). This Account covers the research and development of clustomesogens starting from the design concepts and synthesis to their introduction in functional devices. We developed three strategies to build such hybrid super- or supramolecules. In the covalent approach, we capitalized on the apical ligand-metal bond iono-covalent character to graft tailor-made organic LC promoters on the {M6X(i)8}(n+) nanocluster cores. The supramolecular approach relies on the host-guest complexation of the ternary cluster salt alkali cations with functional crown ether macrocycles. We showed that the hybrid LC behavior depends on the macrocycles structural features. Finally, a third strategy, known as the ionic-assembling strategy, exploits the anionic character of the [M6L14](n-) nanocluster units whose charge is counterbalanced by tailor-made organic cations. We first focused on rationalizing the structural-LC behavior relationships of these noncovalent nanostructured materials by using NMR, SAXS, DSC, and POM technics. Depending on the hybrid organic-inorganic volumic fraction, thermotropic layered or nematic phases were observed. In this last case, the nematic phase being the most fluid of all LC phases, we further investigated this class of clustomesogen by introducing them in electro-controlled devices to tune either their photoluminescence or observe polarized emission. We hope this Account will provide useful tools for the development of new materials integrating such bright but still underused inorganic phosphors.

Abstract
The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions is explored for the {Mo6 Br(i) 8 }(4+) cluster core based unit starting from (TBA)2 [Mo6 Br(i) 8 F(a) 6 ] (TBA=tetra-n-butylammonium; "i" and "a" refer to the face-capping inner and terminal apical ligand, respectively). The catalytic activity of {Mo6 Br(i) 8 }(4+) is enhanced by the in situ generation of [Mo6 Br(i) 8 F(a) 5 (OH)(a) ](2-) , [Mo6 Br(i) 8 F(a) 3 (OH)(a) 3 ](2-) , and [Mo6 Br(i) 8 (OH)(a) 6 ](2-) , which are identified by ESIMS, luminescence, and NMR techniques. Full substitution of F(-) by OH(-) leads to the formation of (H3 O)2 [Mo6 Br(i) 8 (OH)(a) 6 ]⋅10 H2 O; its structure was determined by single-crystal XRD. The immobilization of the active {Mo6 Br(i) 8 }(4+) onto graphene oxide (GO) surfaces enhances its stability under catalytic conditions. The catalytic activity of the resulting (TBA)2 Mo6 Br(i) 8 @GO material is improved with respect to GO, but is reduced compared to the activity under homogeneous conditions because of changes in the GO semiconducting properties as well as lower activity and/or accessibility of the anchored cluster.

Abstract
We investigate 1D nanostructures based on a Mo6@SU8 hybrid nanocomposite in which photoluminescent Mo6 clusters are embedded in the photosensitive SU8 resist. Tens of micrometers long Mo6@SU8-based tubular nanostructures were fabricated by the wetting template method, enabling the control of the inner and outer diameter to about 190 nm and 240 nm respectively, as supported by structural and optical characterizations. The image plane optical study of these nanotubes under optical pumping highlights the efficient waveguiding phenomenon of the red luminescence emitted by the clusters. Moreover, the wave vector distribution in the Fourier plane determined by leakage radiation microscopy gives additional features of the emission and waveguiding. First, the anisotropic red luminescence of the whole system can be attributed to the guided mode along the nanotube. Then, a low-loss propagation behavior is evidenced in the Mo6@SU8-based nanotubes. This result contrasts with the weaker waveguiding signature in the case of UV210-based nanotubes embedding PFO (poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)). It is attributed to the strong reabsorption phenomenon, owing to overlapping between absorption and emission bands in the semi-conducting conjugated polymer PFO. These results make this Mo6@SU8 original class of nanocomposite a promising candidate as nanosources for submicronic photonic integration.
