Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical presentation and genetic characteristics of malignant infantile osteopetrosis. Methods: This was a retrospective case study. Thirty-seven children with malignant infantile osteopetrosis admitted into Beijing Children's Hospital from January 2013 to September 2022 were enrolled in this study. According to the gene mutations, the patients were divided into the CLCN7 group and the TCIRG1 group. Clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, and prognosis were compared between two groups. Wilcoxon test or Fisher exact test were used in inter-group comparison. The survival rate was estimated with the Kaplan-Meier method and the Log-Rank test was used to compare the difference in survival between groups. Results: Among the 37 cases, there were 22 males and 15 females. The age of diagnosis was 0.5 (0.2, 1.0) year. There were 13 patients (35%) and 24 patients (65%) with mutations in CLCN7 and TCIRGI gene respectively. Patients in the CLCN7 group had an older age of diagnosis than those in the TCIRGI group (1.2 (0.4, 3.6) vs. 0.4 (0.2, 0.6) years, Z=-2.60, P=0.008). The levels of serum phosphorus (1.7 (1.3, 1.8) vs. 1.1 (0.8, 1.6) mmol/L, Z=-2.59, P=0.010), creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB) (457 (143, 610) vs. 56 (37, 82) U/L, Z=-3.38, P=0.001) and the level of neutrophils (14.0 (9.9, 18.1) vs. 9.2 (6.7, 11.1) ×109/L, Z=-2.07, P=0.039) at diagnosis were higher in the CLCN7 group than that in the TCIRG1 group. However, the level of D-dimer in the CLCN7 group was lower than that in the TCIRGI group (2.7 (1.0, 3.1) vs. 6.3 (2.5, 9.7) μg/L, Z=2.83, P=0.005). After hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, there was no significant difference in 5-year overall survival rate between the two groups (92.3%±7.4% vs. 83.3%±7.6%, χ²=0.56, P=0.456). Conclusions: TCIRGI gene mutations are more common in children with osteopetrosis. Children with TCIRGI gene mutations have younger age, lower levels of phosphorus, CK-MB, and neutrophils and higher level of D-dimer at the onset. After hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, patients with CLCN7 or TCIRGI gene mutations have similar prognosis.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of baicalein on apoptosis of HeLa human cervical cancer (CC) cells and to elucidate the underlying mechanism. HeLa cells were treated with 20, 50, 100, or 200 μmol/L baicalein for 24, 36, and 48 hours, and CCK-8 assays were used to detect cell viability, and flow cytometry was performed to assess apoptosis rate. Reverse-transcription quantitative PCR was used to measure ERK1/2, p38, and JNK mRNA levels in HeLa cells, and western blotting was performed to measure ERK1/2, p38, and JNK protein levels. The CCK-8 assay showed that the OD value of HeLa cells gradually decreased with increasing baicalein concentrations (P < 0.01) and treatment time (P < 0.01). These results indicated a negative time- and dose-dependent effect of baicalein on HeLa cells. Baicalein treatment of HeLa cells significantly increased apoptosis rate (P < 0.01). In HeLa cells treated with 50 or 200 μmol/L baicalein for 24 h, expression levels of ERK1/2 and p38 mRNA were significantly reduced, whereas that of JNK mRNA was increased (P < 0.01). The levels of phosphorylated ERK1/2 and p38 were significantly reduced, and the level of JNK protein was increased (P < 0.01). Taken together, baicalein appeared to exert anti-cancer effects on HeLa cells through induction of apoptosis and regulation of the ERK/p38/mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway.

Abstract
The results of γ-radiation (2-72 kGy) and thermal-induced effects on BACs in Bi/Er codoped aluminosilicate fibers (BEDF) have been presented first in this paper. We observed that the radiation effect on on-off gain and optical absorption associated with BAC-Al and BAC-Si was insignificant, while the effect on luminescence was considerable. However, the effect on luminescence is caused by the radiation-induced darkening, which is likely linked to thermal bleachable Al-OHC point defects generated by γ-radiation. We carried out the thermal experiment and observed thermal bleaching of the γ-irradiated fiber at a low temperature of 300 °C. The observations indicate that, while γ-radiation could introduce significant background loss, BAC-Al and BAC-Si are fairly radiation resistant. This is the first time that BACs show good radiation resistance in irradiated BEDFs.

Abstract
The study was conducted to distinguish the effect of dietary non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) levels on the community diversity and structure of the cecal microbiota in meat duck based on 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing. In total, 525 1-d-old ducklings were fed diets (105 ducklings, 7 pens of 15 ducklings, on each diet) containing five levels of NPP (0.22, 0.34, 0.40, 0.46, and 0.58%) for 21 days. The results showed that dietary NPP levels linearly and quadratically increased (P < 0.05) 21 d body weight, 1 to 21 d feed intake and NPP intake, and contrarily, linearly decreased (P < 0.05) β-diversity of cecal microbial population in ducks. ß-diversity analyses showed that microbiota clustering based on dietary NPP levels occured, with 0.22% NPP groups distinctly different from the 0.46% and 0.58% NPP group samples. Moreover, dietary NPP levels could change the relative abundance of the phylum Proteobacteria (linear, P < 0.05), genera Eubacterium coprostanoligenes (quadratic, P < 0.05), Ruminococcaceae UCG-014 (quadratic, P < 0.05) and Subdoligrannulum (linear, P < 0.05), and Lachnospiraceae family (quadratic, P < 0.05) in cecal microbiota of ducks. Increasing the dietary NPP level influenced the cecal microbiota and positively affected the growth of meat ducks.

Abstract
Abnormal expression of microRNA (miR) is associated with the occurrence and progression of various types of cancers, including papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). In the present study, the aim was to explore miR‑486‑5p expression and its role in PTC, as well as to investigate the biological function of its potential target genes. The expression levels of miR‑486‑5p and its clinicopathological significance were examined in 507 PTC and 59 normal thyroid samples via The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Subsequently, the results were validated using data from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and ArrayExpress. Receiver operating characteristic and summary receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess the ability of miR‑486‑5p in distinguishing PTC from normal tissue. Furthermore, potential miR‑486‑5p mRNA targets were identified using 12 prediction tools and enrichment analysis was performed on the encoding genes using Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes. The expression levels of miR‑486‑5p were consistently downregulated in PTC compared with in normal tissue across datasets from TCGA, GEO (GSE40807, GSE62054 and GSE73182) and ArrayExpress (E‑MTAB‑736). The results also demonstrated that miR‑486‑5p expression was associated with cancer stage (P=0.003), pathologic lymph node (P=0.047), metastasis (P=0.042), neoplasm (P=0.012) and recurrence (P=0.016) in patients with PTC. In addition, low expression of miR‑486‑5p in patients with PTC was associated with a worse overall survival. A total of 80 miR‑486‑5p‑related genes were observed from at least 9 of 12 prediction platforms, and these were involved in 'hsa05200: Pathways in cancer' and 'hsa05206: MicroRNAs in cancer'. Finally, three hub genes, CRK like proto‑oncogene, phosphatase and tensin homolog and tropomyosin 3, were identified as important candidates in tumorigenesis and progression of PTC. In conclusion, it may be hypothesized that miR‑486‑5p contributes towards PTC onset and progression, and may act as a clinical target. However, in vitro and in vivo experiments are required to validate the findings of the present study.

Abstract
Background/Aims: Whether the level of long noncoding RNA plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 gene (lncRNA PVT1) expression influences the clinical development and outcome of human cancers has not been thoroughly elucidated to date. Inconsistencies still exist regarding the associations between PVT1 and the clinicopathological features, including patient survival data. Additionally, the regulatory mechanism of PVT1 among human cancers remains unclear. Methods: we conducted a comprehensive inquiry to verify the implication of PVT1 expression in cancer patients by conducting a meta-analysis of 19 selected studies and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database to examine the relationship between PVT1 expression and both the prognosis and clinicopathological features of cancer patients using STATA 12.0. In addition, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses of the potential mRNA target genes of PVT1 gathered from TANRIC and Multi Experiment Matrix (MEM) were performed. Results: The level of PVT1 expression in tumor tissues was higher than in paired non-cancer tissues and was significantly associated with a poorer prognosis in cancer patients. Additionally, overexpression of PVT1 was significantly correlated with histological differentiation, tumor (T) classification, lymph node (N) classification and TNM stages. Furthermore, a total of 462 validated target genes were identified, and the GO and KEGG analyses demonstrated that the validated targets of PVT1 were significantly enriched in several pathways, including the GnRH signaling pathway, the Cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathway, the Inflammatory mediator regulation of TRP channels pathway, and the Neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathway. Conclusion: PVT1 may serve as a potential biomarker associated with the progression and prognosis of human cancers.

Abstract
In the present study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis on the clinical roles of p27 protein and p27 gene in digestive tract cancers (DTCs). First, we performed immunohistochemistry staining and found that p27 protein was down-regulated in DTCs. Then we collected 62 publications and calculated the combined hazard ratios (HRs), odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) to clarify the relationships of p27 protein expression with prognoses and clinicopathological parameters. The overall HRs indicated that the down-regulated p27 protein was an independent prognostic biomarker for overall survival (HR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.38-1.81, P < 0.0001) but not for disease-free survival and cancer-specific survival. The combined ORs indicated that a low expression of p27 protein was positively related to lymph node metastasis (OR: 2.15, 95% CI: 1.57-2.96, P < 0.0001), distant metastasis (OR: 2.02, 95% CI: 1.12-3.63, P = 0.019) and pathology grading (OR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.75-2.62, P < 0.0001). Additionally, 60 DTCs-related microarray and RNA-seq datasets were obtained to investigate the expression level and clinical value of p27 gene in DTCs patients. We found that the expression level of p27 gene in DTCs was similar to that in normal controls. And no significant associations of p27 gene expression with prognoses and clinicopathological factors were observed. In conclusion, according to our results, it was p27 protein, but not p27 gene, that can function as an effective biomarker to predict the clinical outcome in patients with DTCs. The down-regulation of p27 protein in DTCs may not result from the altered expression of p27 gene.

Abstract
HOX transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR), a newly discovered long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), has been reported to be a poor prognostic marker in many types of cancers. The current study attempted to investigate the biological roles and clinicopathlogical implications of HOTAIR in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), as well as understand the molecular mechanisms of HOTAIR in HCC progression. HOTAIR expression in 95 HCC patients with paired HCC tissues and adjacent non‑cancer tissues were investigated using quantitative reverse transcription‑polymerase chain reaction. The association between HOTAIR expression and clinicopathological features was assessed. The effects of HOTAIR were examined in vitro assays by silencing the lncRNA. Pathway analyses were performed to illustrate the biological functions of the HOTAIR and coexpression genes. The expression level of HOTAIR was observed significantly higher in the HCC tissue than the adjacent non‑tumor tissue. HOTAIR expression levels were significantly higher in tumor samples from patients with distant metastasis, advanced stage, portal vein tumor embolus, vasoinvasion, tumor capsular infiltration or positive nm23 expression than those from patients without these conditions, correspondingly. The silencing of HOTAIR in liver cancer cells induced the inhibition of cell proliferation and promotion of apoptosis. Several pathways such as extracellular matrix‑receptor interaction, focal adhesion, pathways in cancer were annotated with the HOTAIR and coexpression genes. In summary, the present analysis indicates that HOTAIR might be an oncogene in HCC. It functions though promoting tumor cell growth and inhibiting apoptosis. HOTAIR may potentially be involved in HCC metastatic progression by several pathways correlated to cell adhesion, and may be a therapeutic target in future.

Abstract
Background Astrocyte elevated gene-1 (AEG-1) is related to the tumorigenesis and deterioration of different cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the effect of AEG-1 in NSCLC remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical significance and effect of AEG-1 on biological function of NSCLC. Results AEG-1 was significantly overexpressed in NSCLC tissues and closely correlated to the deterioration of NSCLC based on tissue microarray, TCGA database and meta-analysis. After knock-down of AEG-1, the proliferation, migration and invasion of NSCLC cells were all inhibited, and the tumorigenic and angiogenic ability of NSCLC cells were weakened. Furthermore, the AEG-1 co-expressed genes were significantly related to AMPK signaling pathway based on bioinformatics approaches. Materials and Methods A tissue microarray, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, as well as a meta-analysis were performed to analyze the relationship between AEG-1 and the clinicopathological parameters of NSCLC. Furthermore, immunocytochemistry, Western blot analysis, scratch assay, colony formation assay, Transwell migration and invasion assay and the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model were conducted to explore the effect of AEG-1 on NSCLC in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, bioinformatics analyses were carried out to assess the potential pathways and networks of the co-expressed genes of AEG-1. Conclusions AEG-1 is positively activated in the tumorigenesis and deterioration of NSCLC. We hypothesize that AEG-1 could play an important role in NSCLC via AMPK signaling pathway. Inhibiting the expression of AEG-1 is expected to become a novel method in the therapeutic strategies of NSCLC.

Abstract
Background Growing evidence has demonstrated that Ki-67/MIB-1 has an effect on the clinical progression and prognosis in cancers. However, the diagnostic and prognostic values of Ki-67/MIB-1 in thyroid cancer remain unclear. Materials and methods The meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Studies were retrieved from PubMed, EBSCO, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang and Chinese VIP databases. MetaDiSc and STATA12.0 were used to analyze the meta-analysis. Fixed-effect analysis and random-effect analysis were applied to pool the relative ratio based on heterogeneity in this meta-analysis. Results In the meta-analysis, 51 eligible studies were included. The pooled sensitivity of Ki-67/MIB-1 was 0.61 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.59–0.63) and specificity was 0.75 (95% CI: 0.74–0.77) in thyroid cancer. The pooled positive likelihood ratio was 3.19 (95% CI: 2.30–4.42) and negative likelihood ratio was 0.43 (95% CI: 0.35–0.54). In the diagnosis of thyroid cancer, the pooled diagnostic odds ratio of Ki-67/MIB-1 was 8.54 (95% CI: 5.03–14.49). The area under the symmetric receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.804 (standard error =0.031). Our results showed that there were statistical associations between Ki-67/MIB-1 and age (odds ratio [OR] =1.71, 95% CI: 1.14–2.57, P=0.010), tumor size (OR =1.86, 95% CI: 1.17–2.96, P=0.008), lymph node metastasis (OR =2.49, 95% CI: 1.42–4.39, P=0.002), metastasis status (OR =6.96, 95% CI: 2.46–19.69, P<0.001), tumor node metastasis stage (OR =6.56, 95% CI: 3.80–11.34, P<0.001) and extrathyroid extension (OR =1.91, 95% CI: 1.27–2.87, P=0.002). Furthermore, thyroid cancer patients with a high level of Ki-67/MIB-1 had a worse disease-free survival as compared to patients with a low level of Ki-67/MIB-1 (hazard ratio =5.19, 95% CI: 3.18–8.46, P<0.001). Also, Ki-67/MIB-1 was found to be associated with increased risk of mortality (hazard ratio =3.56, 95% CI: 1.17–10.83, P=0.025). Conclusion Our results demonstrated that Ki-67/MIB-1 might act as a potential factor in diagnosing thyroid cancer in Chinese. Also, the meta-analysis indicated that Ki-67/MIB-1 might have an effect on prognosis in non-Chinese thyroid cancer patients.

Abstract
Decreased level of miR-204-5p has been documented in various malignancies. However, the expression and clinical significance of miR-204-5p in hepatocellular carcinoma has not been investigated. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between miR-204-5p expression and clinicopathological features in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) as well as to predict the relevant signaling pathways. The miR-204-5p expression level was detected in HCC and in matched paraneoplastic liver from 95 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues by the real-time reverse transcription polymerized chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The association of miR-204-5p expression with clinicopathological features as well as the prognosis of HCC was examined. Public data portals including the Gene Expression Omnibus and The Cancer Genome Atlas were used to retrieve the HCC-related data in order to perform a comprehensive meta-analysis. Meanwhile, protein-protein interaction (PPI) and enrichment analyses were performed using predicted target genes. The relative expression of miR-204-5p was remarkably reduced in HCC than that in paraneoplastic hepatic tissues. In HCC, the miR-204-5p expression was downregulated in the metastasis, vasoinvasion, and advanced stage (III and IV) subgroups compared with their counterparts. Furthermore, the meta-analysis based on qRT-PCR data demonstrated that miR-204-5p was markedly downregulated in HCC with a standardized mean difference of -5.19 (P < .001). However, no significant association was observed between miR-204-5p and survival outcomes. The potential target genes of miR-204-5p were significantly enriched in several pathways which might be associated with HCC, such as "cell proliferation" from GO terms and "pathways in cancer" from the KEGG analysis. A PPI network of miR-204-5p potential target genes identified prospective core genes potentially involved in the regulation of HCC oncogenesis and progression. Our findings suggested that miR-204-5p might act as a tumor-suppressive gene in the tumorigenesis and progression of HCC via vital signaling pathways and that miR-204-5p could be regarded as a protective factor in HCC.

Abstract
The role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) HOX transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR) in thyroid carcinoma (TC) remains unclear. The current study was aimed to assess the clinical value of HOTAIR expression levels in TC based on publically available data and to evaluate its potential signaling pathways. The expression data of HOTAIR and clinical information concerning TC were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), respectively. Furthermore, 3 online biological databases, Starbase, Cbioportal, and Multi Experiment Matrix, were used to identify HOTAIR-related genes in TC. Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and Panther pathway analyses were then undertaken to study the most enriched signaling pathways in TC (EASE score<0.1, Bonferroni<0.05). The TCGA results demonstrated that the expression level of HOTAIR in TC tissues was significantly increased compared with non-cancerous tissues (p<0.001). HOTAIR over-expression was significantly associated with poor survival in TC patients (p=0.03). Meta-analyses of GEO datasets revealed a trend consistent with the above results on HOTAIR expression levels in TC (SMD=0.23; 95%CI, 0.00-0.45; p=0.047). Finally, the results of functional analysis for HOTAIR-related genes indicated that HOTAIR might participate in tumorigenesis via the Wnt signaling pathway. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that HOTAIR may be involved in thyroid carcinogenesis, and the over-expression of HOTAIR could act as a biomarker associated with a poor outcome in TC patients. Moreover, the Wnt signaling pathway may be the key pathway regulated by HOTAIR in TC.

Abstract
Objective To explore the relationship between tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) and the clinicopathological features in HCC as well as its biological function. Methods Totally, 412 liver tissues were collected, including 171 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and their corresponding non-tumor tissues, 37 cirrhosis and 33 normal liver tissues. The expression of TRAF6 was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Then, analysis of the correlations between TRAF6 expression and clinicopathological parameters in HCC was conducted. Furtherer, in vitro experiments on HepG2 and Hep3B cells were performed to validate the biological function of TRAF6 on HCC cells. TRAF6 siRNA was transfected into HepG2 and Hep3B cell lines and TRAF6 expression was evaluated with RT-qPCR and western blot. The assays of cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis and caspase-3/7 activity were carried out to investigate the effects of TRAF6 on HCC cells with RNA interference. Cell viability was assessed with Cell Titer-Blue kit. Cell proliferation was tested with MTS kit. Cell apoptosis was checked through morphologic detection with fluorescence microscope, as well as caspase-3/7 activity was measured with fluorogenic substrate detection. Results The positive expression rate of TRAF6 protein was 49.7 % in HCC, significantly higher than that of normal liver (12.1 %), cirrhosis (21.6 %) and adjacent non-cancerous tissues (36.3 %, all P < 0.05). Upregulated TRAF6 was detected in groups with metastasis (Z = −2.058, P = 0.04) and with low micro-vessel density (MVD) expression (Z = −2.813, P = 0.005). Spearman correlation analysis further showed that the expression of TRAF6 was positively correlated with distant metastasis (r = 0.158, P = 0.039) and negatively associated with MVD (r = −0.249, P = 0.004). Besides, knock-down of TRAF6 mRNA in HCC cell lines HepG2 and Hep3B both resulted in cell viability and proliferation inhibition, also cell apoptosis induction and caspase-3/7 activity activation. Conclusions TRAF6 may contribute to metastasis and deterioration of the HCC via influencing cell growth and apoptosis. Thus, TRAF6 might become a predictive and therapeutic biomarker for HCC.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the clinicopathological value and potential roles of microRNA-198 (miR-198) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods Ninety-five formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded HCC and the para-cancerous liver tissues were gathered. Real-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction was applied to determine the miR-198 expression. The association between the miR-198 expression and clinicopathological features was examined. Meanwhile, potential target messenger RNAs of miR-198 in HCC were obtained from 14 miRNA prediction databases and natural language processing method, in which we pooled the genes related to the tumorigenesis and progression of HCC and classified them by their frequency. The selected target genes were finally analyzed in the Gene Ontology analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway. Results miR-198 expression was significantly lower in HCC than that in adjacent noncancerous liver tissues (1.30±0.72 vs 2.01±0.58, P<0.001). Low miR-198 expression was also correlated to hepatitis C virus infection (r=−0.48, P<0.001), tumor capsular infiltration (r=−0.43, P<0.001), metastasis (r=−0.26, P<0.010), number of tumor nodes (r=−0.25, P=0.013), vaso-invasion (r=−0.24, P=0.017), and clinical tumor node metastasis stage (r=−0.23, P=0.024). Altogether, 1,048 genes were achieved by the concurrent prediction from at least four databases and natural language processing indicated 1,800 genes for HCC. Further, 127 overlapping targets were further proceeded with for pathway analysis. The most enriched Gene Ontology terms in the potential target messenger RNAs of miR-198 were cell motion, cell migration, cell motility, and regulation of cell proliferation in biological process; organelle lumen, membrane-enclosed lumen, and nuclear lumen in cellular component; and enzyme binding, protein domain-specific binding, and protein kinase activity in molecular function. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis showed that these target genes were obviously involved in focal adhesion and pathways in cancer. Conclusion Lower expression of miR-198 was related to several clinicopathological parameters in HCC patients. miR-198 might play a regulatory role through its target genes in the development of HCC.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of dietary DL-2-hydroxy-4(methylthio)butanoic acid (DL-HMTBA) supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and ascites syndrome (AS) in broilers reared at low ambient temperature (LAT) from 7 to 28 days of age. Eight hundred 7-day-old broilers were randomly assigned to two ambient temperatures (LAT and normal ambient temperature [NAT]), four supplemental DL-HMTBA levels (0.17, 0.34, 0.51, and 0.68 %) of the basal diet in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement (ten replicate pens; ten birds/pen). LAT and NAT indicate temperatures of 12-14 and 24-26 °C in two chambers, respectively, and broilers were reared at these temperatures from 7 to 28 days of age. LAT significantly decreased body weight gain (P < 0.001), serum glutathione (GSH) content (day 14, P = 0.02; day 28, P = 0.045), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) at 21 days (P = 0.001, 0.015) and 28 days (P = 0.017, 0.010) and increased feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.001), serum malondialdehyde (day 21, P = 0.000) and protein carbonyl Level (day 14, P = 0.003; day 21, P = 0.035). As for incidence of AS, there were significant effects of LAT on red blood cell (RBC) count (P < 0.05), hematocrit (HCT) (P < 0.05), and the right to total ventricular weight ratio (RV/TV) at 21 days (P = 0.012) and 28 days (P = 0.046). Supplementation of DL-HMTBA markedly decreased RV/TV at day 28 (P = 0.021), RBC (day 21, P = 0.008), HCT (day 21, P < 0.001), mean cell hemoglobin (day 14, P = 0.035; day 21, P = 0.003), and serum protein carbonyl level (day 21, P = 0.009), while significantly increased serum GSH content (day 14, P = 0.022; day 28, P = 0.001), SOD and GSH-Px activities at 21 days of age (P < 0.001 and P = 0.037). The optimal supplemental DL-HMTBA levels in basal diet of broilers aged from 7 to 28 days under low or normal temperatures were similar, so the authors recommended supplemental of DL-HMTBA level was 0.46 %.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of maternal canthaxanthin (CX, 6 mg/kg) and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3 , 0.069 mg/kg) supplementation on the performance of Cherry Valley ducklings under two different vitamin regimens. A total of 780 duck breeder females and 156 males were randomly allotted to two diets with or without the addition of the mixture of CX and 25-OH-D3 (CX+25-OH-D3 ) for 32 weeks. Ducklings (males and females separately) hatched from eggs laid at 24 weeks of the duck breeder trial were fed with a NRC vitamin regimen, and ducklings (males and females separately) hatched from eggs laid at 32 weeks of the duck breeder trial were fed with a HIGH vitamin regimen (had higher levels of all vitamins except biotin than NRC vitamin regimen), for 14 days. The results showed that, maternal CX+25-OH-D3 supplementation increased the shank pigmentation for 7-days post hatch in ducklings under a NRC vitamin regimen, and for 14-days post hatch in ducklings under a HIGH vitamin regimen. Growth performance, antioxidant status and serum phosphorus of ducklings under a NRC vitamin regimen were increased by maternal CX+25-OH-D3 supplementation; however, these positive effects were not observed in ducklings under a HIGH vitamin regimen. Males revealed increased growth performance in ducklings under both NRC and HIGH vitamin regimens. Sexual differences in shank pigmentation, antioxidant status, tibia strength and serum phosphorus were not consistent as they were dependent on maternal CX+25-OH-D3 status or dietary vitamin regimens. Data suggest that maternal CX+25-OH-D3 supplementation is important for starter ducklings under a NRC vitamin regimen, but not HIGH vitamin regimen.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the effect of tea polyphenols (TP) on production performance, egg quality, and hepatic-antioxidant status of laying hens in vanadium-containing diets. A total of 300 Lohman laying hens (67 wk old) were used in a 1 plus 3 × 3 experiment design in which hens were given either a diet without vanadium and TP supplementation (control) or diets supplemented with 5, 10, or 15 mg V/kg and TP (0, 600, 1,000 mg/kg) diets for 8 wk, which included 2 phases: a 5-wk accumulation phase and a 3-wk depletion phase. During the accumulation phase, dietary vanadium addition decreased (linear, P < 0.01) albumen height and Haugh unit (HU), and TP supplementation mitigated (linear effect, P < 0.01) this reduction effect induced by vanadium. Eggshell thickness (linear, P < 0.01), redness (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05), and yellowness (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) were decreased by vanadium and increased by the effect of TP when a vanadium-containing diet was fed. In the depletion phase, the bleaching effect on eggshells induced by vanadium disappeared one wk after vanadium withdrawal. Eggshell thickness, eggshell strength, albumen height, and HU were lower (P < 0.05) in the 15 mg/kg vanadium group compared with the control diet until 2 wk post vanadium challenge, but hens fed 15 mg/kg vanadium and 600 mg/kg TP showed no difference from the control diet only after 1 wk withdrawal. In the liver, the activity of glutathione S-transferases and glutathione peroxidase was increased (linear, P < 0.01) with the TP addition at 5 wk in the accumulation phase in the vanadium-containing diet; the malondialdehyde content increased (linear effect, P = 0.02) with the addition of vanadium. The results indicate that supplementation of 10 and 15 mg/kg vanadium resulted in reduced albumen quality, bleaching effect on eggshell color, and antioxidant stress in the liver. The effect of TP addition can prevent laying hens from the adverse effect of vanadium on egg quality, liver antioxidant stress and shorten the recovery time.

Abstract
The study was conducted to assess the effect of vanadium (V) in high-fat diet on the liver and kidney of rats in a 5-week trial. Seventy-two female Wistar rats (BW = 95 ± 5 g) were randomly allotted into eight groups. Groups I, II, III, and IV obtained low-fat diet containing 0, 3, 15, and 30 mg/kg V, and V, VI, VII, and VIII groups received the respective vanadium doses with high-fat diet, respectively. There were lesions in the liver and kidney of V, VI, VII, and VIII groups, granular degeneration and vacuolar degeneration were observed in the renal tubular and glomerulus epithelial cells, and hepatocytes showed granular degeneration and vacuolar degeneration. Supplemented high-fat diet with vanadium was shown to decrease (P < 0.05) activities of superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, glutathione-S transferase, and NAD(P)H/quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) and increase malondialdehyde content in the liver and kidney. The relative expression of hepatic nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf-2) and NQO1 mRNA was downregulated by V addition and high-fat diet, and the effect of V was more pronounced in high-fat diet (interaction, P < 0.05), with VIII group having the lowest mRNA expression of Nrf-2 and NQO1 in the liver and kidney. In conclusion, it suggested that dietary vanadium ranging from 15 to 30 mg/kg could lead to oxidative damage and vanadium accumulation in the liver and kidney, which caused renal and hepatic toxicity. The high-fat diet enhanced vanadium-induced hepatic and renal damage, and the mechanism was related to the modulation of the hepatic and renal mRNA expression of Nrf-2 and NQO1.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of dietary canthaxanthin (CX) and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) supplementation on the antioxidant status and tibia quality of duck breeders and newly hatched ducklings. In total, 780 female and 156 male duck breeders were randomly allotted to 2 treatments. Duck breeders were fed either a commercial diet (containing 3,000 IU/kg vitamin D3) or the same diet plus a mixture of CX (6 mg/kg) and 25-OH-D3 (0.069 mg/kg) for 40 wk. The antioxidant status of duck breeders, egg yolk, and ducklings; tibia quality of duck breeders and ducklings; and shell quality of breeder eggs were investigated. The total antioxidant capacity of breeder female liver (P = 0.028), breeder male testis (P = 0.049), egg yolk (P = 0.032), one-day-old duckling liver (P = 0.024), and one-day-old duckling yolk sac (P = 0.012) were increased by dietary supplementation of the mixture of CX and 25-OH-D3 The inclusion of CX and 25-OH-D3 decreased liver protein carbonyl of breeder females (P = 0.030), and liver malonaldehyde (P = 0.050) and protein carbonyl (P = 0.030) of breeder males. Yolk (P < 0.001), shank (P < 0.001), and yolk sac pigmentation (P < 0.001) of one-day-old ducklings were increased by the supplementation of the CX and 25-OH-D3 mixture. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed in tibia quality or eggshell quality between treatments. In conclusion, the inclusion of the mixture of CX and 25-OH-D3 in a diet sufficient in vitamin D3 increased antioxidant status but not tibia quality of duck breeders and newly hatched ducklings.

Abstract
This trial studied the effects of maternal dietary vitamin premixes, and the mixture of canthaxanthin (CX) and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) on the performance of progeny ducklings. Four maternal diets were used under a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 2 kinds of vitamin premixes (Regular and High; High premix had higher levels of all vitamins except K3 than the Regular premix), and with or without the addition of the mixture of CX (6 mg/kg) and 25-OH-D3 (0.069 mg/kg). Cherry Valley duck breeders (38-wk-old) were fed with corn-wheat flour-soybean meal-based diets for 8 wk, and then eggs were collected and hatched. Healthy ducklings (equal number of female and male) from each maternal group were randomly selected and received the same commercial starter (1 to 14 d) and grower (15 to 35 d) pellet diet for 35 d. Maternal High vitamin premix increased shank pigmentation (1 d, P = 0.001), BW (1 d, P < 0.001 and 14 d, P = 0.006), BW gain (1 to 14 d, P = 0.008), G:F ratio (1 to 14 d, P = 0.007), superoxide dismutase (SOD; 1 d liver, P = 0.027 and 14 d serum, P = 0.031), and total antioxidant capacity (1 d liver, P < 0.001); and decreased protein carbonyl (14 d serum, P = 0.011) of ducklings. The mixture of CX and 25-OH-D3 increased yolk pigmentation (P < 0.001); increased shank pigmentation (1 d, P < 0.001 and 14 d, P < 0.001), BW (1 d, P < 0.001), feed intake (15-35 d, P = 0.014), SOD (1 d liver, P = 0.032), and tibia ash (14 d, P = 0.010) of ducklings; and decreased malondialdehyde (P < 0.001) and protein carbonyl (P = 0.044) of yolks, and malondialdehyde (14 d serum, P < 0.001) of ducklings. In conclusion, either maternal High vitamin premix or maternal supplementation of the CX and 25-OH-D3 mixture improves growth performance and antioxidant status of ducklings.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of hepatitis B virus (HBV) S/C double gene loci antisense locked nucleic acid on replication and expression of HBV in hepatitis transgenic mice. HBV mice (N = 30) were randomly divided into five groups of six mice: 5% glucose solution control, empty liposome control, single-target S, single-target C, and dual-target SC groups. An antisense locked nucleic acid fragment was injected into the mice. Serum HBsAg, serum HBV DNA, HBV C-mRNA expression in liver tissue, HbsAg and HbcAg expression in hepatocytes, serum albumin, alanine transaminase (ALT), urea nitrogen, and creatinine were detected. Liver and kidney sections were examined for the effects of antisense locked nucleic acid. The expression of HBsAg was markedly inhibited; the inhibition rates of the S, C, and SC target groups were 36.63, 31.50, and 54.87%, respectively; the replication of HBV DNA was also inhibited: 23.97, 21.13, and 35.83%, respectively. After injection at 1, 3, and 5 days, the corresponding rates for HBsAg inhibition were 14.40, 25.61, and 31.33%, and for HBV DNA inhibition they were 11.04, 19.24, and 24.13%. Compared with the control group, the differences in serum albumin, ALT, urea nitrogen, and creatinine in each group were not statistically significant, and the number of HbsAg- and HBcAg-positive cells in the mouse liver was significantly reduced. The liver and kidney tissues were normal. The gene therapy had significant inhibitory effects on the replication and expression of HBV in transgenic mice, and double-gene targeting was better than single-gene targeting.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the responses of meat ducks of 15 to 35 d of age to free gossypol (FG) from cottonseed meal (CSM) and to establish the maximum limits of dietary FG concentration based on growth performance, blood parameters, and tissue residues of gossypol. Nine hundred 15-d-old ducks were randomly allocated to 5 treatments with 10 cages/treatment and 18 ducks/cage on the basis of BW. Five isonitrogenous and isocaloric experimental diets were formulated on a digestible amino acid basis to produce diets in which 0% (without FG), 25% (36 mg FG/kg), 50% (75 mg FG/kg), 75% (111 mg FG/kg), and 100% (153 mg FG/kg) of protein from soybean meal were replaced by that from CSM. Increasing dietary FG content, BW, and ADG decreased (linearly, P < 0.05, except for ADG of days 29 to 35), and F/G linearly increased (P < 0.05). At 35 d, blood hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration linearly decreased (P < 0.05), while serum total protein, albumin, and globulin content linearly decreased (P < 0.05), and the residue of gossypol in liver, kidney, heart, breast, and leg muscle linearly increased (P < 0.001) with increases in dietary FG concentration. Ducks fed 36 mg FG/kg (5.83% CSM of diet) diet had a normal histological structure of liver, and muscle (breast and leg) had no residue of gossypol. The maximum limit of dietary FG concentration was estimated to range from a low of 36 mg/kg to maximize serum globulin concentration to a high of 124 mg/kg to minimize feed intake for 22 to 28d on the basis of a quadratic broken-line model.

Abstract
A spatially distributed hard X-ray detection array has been developed to diagnose the loss of runaway electron with toroidal and poloidal resolution. The hard X-ray radiation in the energy ranges of 0.3-1 MeV resulted from runaway electrons can be measured. The detection array consists of 12 CdTe detectors which are arranged surrounding the tokamak. It is found that most runaway electrons which transport to plasma boundary tend to loss on limiters. The application of electrode biasing probe resulted in enhancement of local runaway loss. Resonant magnetic perturbations enhanced the runaway electrons diffusion and showed an asymmetric poloidal loss rate.

Abstract
In order to mitigate the negative effects of the plasma disruption a massive gas injection (MGI) valve is designed for the joint Texas experimental tokamak. The MGI valve is based on the eddy-current repulsion mechanism. It has a fueling volume of 30 ml. The piston of the MGI valve is made by non-ferromagnetic material, so it can be installed close to the vacuum vessel which has a strong toroidal magnetic field. A diode is use to prevent current oscillation in the discharge circuit. The drive coil of the valve is installed outside the gas chamber. The opening characteristics and the gas flow of the MGI valve have been tested by a 60 l vacuum chamber. Owing to the large electromagnetic force the reaction time of the valve is shorter than 0.3 ms. Duration for the opening of the MGI valve is in the order of 10 ms.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of gossypol from cottonseed meal (CSM) on growth performance, blood biochemical profiles, and liver histopathology of ducks. A total of 900 1-d-old ducks were randomly allocated to 5 treatments with 12 pens/treatment and 15 ducks/pen. The 5 experimental diets were formulated in such a way that 0% (a corn-soybean meal basal diet, diet 1), 25% (diet 2), 50% (diet 3), 75% (diet 4), and 100% (diet 5) of protein from soybean meal were replaced with that from CSM. All diets were formulated on a digestible amino acid basis. The experiment included 2 phases, the starter phase (1 to 3 wk) where the test diets contained graded levels of CSM and the growth phase (4 to 5 wk) where birds were fed a corn-soybean basal diet to examine the recovery of ducks after CSM withdrawal. Dietary CSM and gossypol linearly (P < 0.01) and quadratically (P < 0.01) decreased ADG and ADFI during d 1 to 14. The threshold of daily total gossypol (TG) and free gossypol (FG) intake based on ADG on d 1 to 7 and d 7 to 14 were 32.20 and 2.64 mg/d, and 92.12 and 9.62 mg/d, respectively. Serum alanine aminotransferase increased (P < 0.05) linearly with increasing level of gossypol in the diets (d 7), whereas aspartate aminotransferase increased (P < 0.05) linearly and quadratically (d 14). Serum albumin concentration decreased (P < 0.05) quadratically with increasing dietary CSM concentrations on d 21. The degree of damage to the liver increased markedly with increasing dietary CSM and gossypol content and the length of CSM and gossypol intake. On d 35, there was no difference on BW and blood profiles of ducks among all treatments. These results suggest that meat ducks’ dietary TG and FG concentration should be lower than 928.9 and 77.2 mg/kg, respectively, during d 1 to 21 of age and that a 2-wk withdrawal of diets containing gossypol should be considered.

Abstract
The study was conducted to determine the effects of low ambient temperature (LAT) and a vitamin C (VC) dietary supplement on the growth performance, blood parameters, and antioxidant capacity of 21-d-old broilers. A total of 400 one-day-old male Cobb broilers were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments as follows: 1) LAT and a basal diet; 2) LAT and a basal diet supplemented with 1,000 mg of VC/kg (LAT + VC); 3) normal ambient temperature (NAT) and a basal diet; 4) NAT and a basal diet supplemented with 1,000 mg of VC/kg (NAT + VC). All birds were fed to 21 d of age. Broilers in groups 1 and 2 were raised at 24 to 26°C during 1 to 7 d, and at 9 to 11°C during 8 to 21 d, whereas groups 3 and 4 were raised at 29 to 31°C during 1 to 7 d and at 24 to 26°C during 8 to 21 d. The LAT increased the feed conversion ratio during the whole experimental period (P < 0.01), whereas it increased heart index at 21 d (P < 0.05) and hematocrit and hemoglobin level at 14 d (P < 0.05). Supplementing the diet with VC increased hematocrit, hemoglobin, and red blood cell count at 21 d (P < 0.05). At 21 d, LAT conditions decreased total antioxidant capacity in the serum, liver, and lungs (P < 0.05), and it also increased the levels of VC in the serum and liver, the amount of protein carbonylation in liver and lungs, and the malondialdehyde level in the lungs (P < 0.05). The addition of VC tended to increase the total antioxidant capacity level in serum (P < 0.1). Low ambient temperature resulted in oxidative stress for broilers that were fed from 1 to 21 d of age, whereas no significant effect was found on the antioxidant activity by dietary VC supplementation.

Abstract
This paper presents the upgraded x-ray imaging crystal spectrometer (XICS) system on Joint Texas Experimental Tokamak (J-TEXT) tokamak and the latest experimental results obtained in last campaign. With 500 Hz frame rate of the new Pilatus detector and 5 cm × 10 cm spherically bent crystal, the XICS system can provide core electron temperature (Te), core ion temperature (Ti), and plasma toroidal rotation (VΦ) with a maximum temporal resolution of 2 ms for J-TEXT pure ohmic plasmas. These parameters with high temporal resolution are very useful in tokamak plasma research, especially for rapidly changed physical processes. The experimental results from the upgraded XICS system are presented.

Abstract
The runaway electrons have been measured by hard x-ray detectors and soft x-ray array in the J-TEXT tokamak. The hard x-ray radiations in the energy ranges of 0.5-5 MeV are measured by two NaI detectors. The flux of lost runaway electrons can be obtained routinely. The soft x-ray array diagnostics are used to monitor the runaway beam generated in disruptions since the soft x-ray is dominated by the interaction between runaway electrons and metallic impurities inside the plasma. With the aid of soft x-ray array, runaway electron beam has been detected directly during the formation of runaway current plateau following the disruptions.

Abstract
We measured the mRNA transcript expression patterns for members of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system during embryonic and postnatal development in epiphyseal cartilage from Langshan (LS) and Arbor Acres (AA) chickens. Insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-2 expression was positively correlated with IGF-I from embryonic day (E) 14 to postnatal d (P) 0 and with IGF-II from E14 to P14 but negatively correlated with IGF-I from P0 to P42 and IGF-II from P14 to P42. Expression of IGFBP-5 correlated positively with IGF-I from E14 to P0 but negatively from P0 to P28. The results suggest that these genes are regulated in a coordinated fashion during development. A negative correlation was found between IGFBP-7 and IGF-II during P0 to P42. A positive correlation was found between IGFBP-3 (E14 to E18, P14 to P42) and IGF-IR and between IGFBP-3 (E14 to P0, P14 to P42) and IGF-I. The endocrine factors can be integrated with nutrition to regulate animal growth. In our study, AA chickens were fed a nutrient-rich AA diet, and LS chickens were fed either an AA diet or a less-rich diet. The LS and AA chickens fed the same AA diet showed no differences in IGF-I, IGF-I receptor, IGFBP-2, IGFBP-5, IGFBP-7, and IGFBP-3 but did still show differences in IGF-II. Our data indicate that these select genes may show linked expression during certain periods of development and that differences in gene expression respond differently to nutrient intake in LS and AA chickens.

Abstract
Several natural and anthropogenic radionuclides ((210)Pb, (226)Ra and (137)Cs) in guano-phosphatic coral sediments and pure guano particles collected from Ganquan, Guangjin, Jinqing and Jinyin Islands of the Xisha archipelago, South China Sea, were analyzed. The Constant Initial Concentration (CIC) model and the Constant Rate of Supply (CRS) model were applied for age calculation. The average supply rate of (210)Pb was 126 Bq m(-2) a(-1), very close to the flux of northern hemisphere average (125 Bq m(-2) a(-1)). The activities of anthropogenic radionuclides in the sediments were very low, indicating that human nuclear tests did not notably impact this region. The main source of radionuclides in the sediments was from atmospheric precipitation, and the organic matter derived from plant and produced by nutrient-rich guano could further enhance them.

Abstract
The electrochemical oxidation of methanol has been investigated on underpotentially deposited-ruthenium-modified platinum electrode (upd-Ru/Pt) and on underpotentially deposited-tin-modified platinum electrode (upd-Sn/Pt). The submonolayers of upd-Ru and upd-Sn on a Pt electrode increased the rate of methanol electrooxidation several times as large as that on a pure Pt electrode. The best performance for methanol electrooxidation was obtained on a ternary platinum based catalyst modified by upd-Ru and upd-Sn simultaneously. The influence of the submonolayers of upd-Ru adatoms and upd-Sn adatoms on the oxidation of methanol in acid has been investigated. The effect of Ru on methanol electrooxidation lies on the distribution of Ru adatoms on a Pt surface. It has been shown that as long as the amount of upd-Ru deposits were controlled in a proper range, upd-Ru deposits would enhance the methanol oxidation obtained on a Pt electrode at whichever deposition potential the upd-Ru deposits were obtained. The effects of tin are sensible to the potential range. The enhancement effect of upd-Sn adatoms for the oxidation of methanol will disappear as the electrode potential is beyond a certain value. It is speculated that there exists a synergetic effect on the Pt electrode as adatoms Ru and Sn participate simultaneously in the methanol oxidation.

Abstract
AIM: To determine the frequencies of HGV and TTV infections in blood donors in Hangzhou.
METHODS: RT-nested PCR for HGV RNA detection and semi-nested PCR for TTV DNA detection in the sera from 203 blood donors, and nucleotide sequence analysis were performed.
RESULTS: Thirty-two (15.8%) and 30 (14.8%) of the 203 serum samples were positive for HGV RNA and TTV DNA, respectively. And 5 (2.5%) of the 203 serum samples were detectable for both HGV RNA and TTV DNA. Homology of the nucleotide sequences of HGV RT-nested PCR products and TTV semi-nested PCR products from 3 serum samples compared with the reported HGV and TTV sequences was 89.36%, 87.94%, 88.65% and 63.51%, 65.77% and 67.12%, respectively.
CONCLUSION: The infection rates of HGV and/or TTV in blood donors are relatively high, and to establish HGV and TTV examinations to screen blood donors is needed for transfusion security. The genomic heterogeneity of TTV or HGV is present in the isolates from different areas.

Abstract
AIM: To correlate the length of the telomere to microsatellite instability (MSI) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of APC, MCC and DCC genes in gastric carcinomas.
METHODS: Telomeric restriction fragment (TRF) length of gastric cancer was measured with Southern blot. LOH of APC, MCC and DCC genes, microsatellite instability (MSI) and frameshift mutation of hMSH6, TGF-βRII and BAX genes were analyzed by PCR-based methods.
RESULTS: Sixty-eight cases of sporadic gastric carcinoma were studied for MSI using five microsatellite markers. MSI in at least one locus was detected in 17 (25%) of 68 tumors analyzed. Frameshift mutations of hMSH6, TGF-βRII and BAX were detected in 2, 6 and 3 of gastric carcinomas respectively showing high MSI (≥ 2 loci, n = 8), but none was found in those showing low MSI (only one locus, n = 9) or MSS (tumor lacking MSI or stable, n = 51). Thirty-five cases, including all high MSI and low MSI, were studied for TRF. The mean TRF length was not correlated with clinicopathological parameters. No association was observed between TRF length and MSI or frameshift mutation. On the contrary, LOH at the DCC locus was related to telomere shortening (P < 0.01). This tendency was also observed in APC and MCC genes, although there was no statistical significance.
CONCLUSION: The development of gastric cancer can arise through two different genetic pathways. In high MSI gastric cancers, defective mismatch repair allows mutations to accumulate and generate the high MSI phenotype. In gastric cancers showing either low MSI or MSS, multiple deletions may represent the LOH pathway. Telomere erosion is independent of high MSI phenotype but related to the LOH pathway in gastric cancer.

Abstract
AIMS In order to explore the role of alterations of telomerase activity and terminal restriction fragment (TRF) length in the development and progression of gastric cancer. METHODS Telomerase activity was detected in 176 specimens of gastric mucosa obtained through an operation or endoscopical biopsy by using the telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay. Meanwhile, the mean length of TRF was measured with the use of a Southern blot in part of those samples. RESULTS Telomerase activity was detected in 14 of 57 (24.6%) chronic atrophy gastritis patients, six of 18 (33.3%) intestinal metaplasia patients, three of eight (37.5%) dysplasia patients and 60 of 65 (92.3%) gastric cancer patients, respectively. Normal gastric mucosa revealed no telomerase activity. No association was found between telomerase activity and any clinicopathological parameters. The mean TRF length was decreased gradually with age in normal mucosa and in gastric cancer tissue. Regression analysis demonstrated that the reduction rate in these tissues was 41 +/- 12 base pairs/year. Among 35 gastric cancers, TRF length was shown to be shorter in 20 cases (57.1%), similar in 12 cases (34.3%) and elongated in three cases (7.6%), compared to the corresponding adjacent tissues. The mean TRF length tended to decrease as the mucosa underwent chronic atrophy gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia and into gastric cancer. The mean TRF length in gastric cancer was not statistically correlated with clinicopathological parameters and telomerase activity. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that telomerase is expressed during the early stage of gastric carcinogenesis, and that the clinical significance of TRF length appears to be limited in gastric cancer.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the role of DNA microsatellite instability (MSI) in gastric carcinogenesis by studying associations between MSI status, clinicopathological features, and loss of genetic loci. METHODS Six microsatellite loci and loss of heterozygosity at APC, DCC, and MCC were analysed by polymerase chain reaction based methods in 53 cases of advanced gastric cancer. RESULTS MSI was observed in 32.1% of gastric carcinomas (17/53) and 20% of foci of intestinal metaplasia (3/15). Seven gastric carcinomas (13.7%) were MSI-high (MSI-H) (three loci or more) and 10 (18.9%) were MSI-low (MSI-L) (one or two loci). The frequency of MSI-H was higher in intestinal (25.0%) than in diffuse carcinomas (3.7%) (p < 0.05). None of the MSI-H tumours showed loss of heterozygosity at APC, MCC, or DCC loci. CONCLUSIONS MSI may have an important and early role in a subset of gastric cancers, particularly the intestinal type. The MSI-H subset of gastric cancer has features in common with its colorectal counterpart, whereas MSI-L and microsatellite stable cancers appear to develop through the loss of heterozygosity pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein that synthesizes telomeric DNA onto chromosomal ends. The expression of telomerase is thought to be required for cellular immortality and oncogenesis. METHODS To investigate the role of telomerase in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer, we analysed telomerase activity in biopsy samples of colorectal cancer and colonic adenomas. Using a polymerase chain reaction-based assay, we examined telomerase activity in 52 samples of colorectal cancer, 12 colonic adenomas and 30 normal colonic mucosa samples obtained by endoscopic biopsy. RESULTS Telomerase activity was detectable in 88.5% (46/52) of colorectal carcinomas, in 50% (6/12) of colonic adenomas but not in normal colorectal mucosa. There was no correlation between telomerase activity and tumour location, type, size and differentiation (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that telomerase activation plays a role in the evolution of colorectal cancer, and that measurement of telomerase activity in biopsied colorectal mucosa samples may provide information both as a diagnostic marker to detect small numbers of cancer cells, and as a screening method for patients at high risk for colorectal carcinoma.

Abstract
Reflection-induced phase retardance inside bulk optic-material current sensors makes the state of polarization of the light change, which reduces the immunity of the sensors against electromagnetic interference. These effects are analyzed theoretically for the first time, to our knowledge. A comparison between the theoretical analysis and the experimental results are given.

Abstract
The structure of the axillary organ of a batrachoidid species, the gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta Goode and Bean 1879), has been examined and several simple experiments designed to elucidate its function performed. Electron microscopy (EM) studies revealed cells and structures suggesting secretory and iono regulatory roles (e.g., abundant intracytoplasmic secretory particles, rough endoplasmic reticulum, sparse Golgi bodies, indented epithelial cells with microvilli, numerous endocytotic vesicles, etc.). Our physiological experiments allowed us to reach several conclusions: the organs do not excrete significant quantities of urea relative to other areas of the fish (head and gills), the organs do not secrete a substance that is toxic to a teleost test fish (Gambusia affinis), the secretions do not induce short-term modifications in locomotory activity of other gulf toadfish (e.g., by pheromonal means) and the secretions do not inhibit the growth of several species of microorganisms in culture. The function of the organ and its secretions remains unknown, representing a fertile area for research on structure and function in comparative physiology.

Abstract
Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) was measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. TNF alpha levels in peripheral blood of patients with twenty-one cases of chronic persistent hepatitis (7.3 +/- 9.5 micrograms/L), fourty-two cases of chronic active hepatitis (15.4 +/- 31.1 micrograms/L), one hundred and six cases of liver cirrhosis (11.1 +/- 17.7 micrograms/L) and one hundred and ten cases of parimary hepatocellular carcinoma (10.9 +/- 13.3 micrograms/L) was significantly increased when compared with normal controls (4.3 +/- 2.9 micrograms/L) (P < 0.01). There was significant correlation between tumor necrosis factor alpha levels and ALT elevation and also between TNF alpha levels and bilirubin contents more than 100 mumol/L in chronic hepatitis patients. Tumor necrosis factor alpha levels was also significantly in HBV concomitant with HCV and/or HDV infection than in HBV infection alone. There was no correlation in tumor necrosis factor alpha levels and AFP concentrations. These findings show that tumor necrosis factor participates in the activity process of liver disease.

Abstract
The mean deltaD value of petiole water of Pterocarpus indicus Willd (deltaD = -9.0 +/- 2.5 per thousand, n = 3) was not significantly different from the mean value of stem water (-8.3 +/- 2.8 per thousand, n = 3). deltaD values of main vein water ranged from -11.1 to + 12.0 per thousand (n = 14) and increased along the main vein from petiole to the tip of leaves. Mesophyll water was highly enriched in deuterium (mean deltaD = +32.0 +/- 2.0 per thousand, n = 19) when compared with stem, petiole, and vein water. deltaD values of mesophyll water for different areas of the lamina, however, were not homogenous and could differ by as much as 20 per thousand.

Abstract
Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.) was grown in growth chambers set at 45 or 85% relative humidity at 30 degrees C, CO(2) 350 microliters per liter and 1000 micromoles per square meter per second of photosynthetically active radiation. Soil water potential was maintained at -0.05 megapascal by subirrigation with half strength Hoagland solution. The third, fourth, and fifth leaves from the base of 21- and 25-day-old plants were used for pressure-volume measurements. Components of leaf water status including water potential (osmotic and potential associated with the apoplast), leaf water content (apoplasmic and symplasmic water), and elastic modulus of leaf tissue were determined. Results indicate: (a) persistent dry air generated leaves with lower water potential at a given relative water content than did humid air; (b) the higher total leaf water content in plants grown in dry air was related to an increase in apoplasmic water, whereas symplasmic water remained similar in both humidity treatments; (c) difference in leaf water potential between low and high humidity treatments was related to decreased potential associated with the apoplast but not to a change in cell wall elasticity.
