Solvent Mediated Nanoscale Quasi-Periodic Chirality Reversal in Self-Assembled Molecular Networks Featuring Mirror Twin Boundaries

Grain boundaries in polycrystals have a prominent impact on the properties of a material, therefore stimulating the research on grain boundary engineering. Structure determination of grain boundaries of molecule-based polycrystals with submolecular resolution remains elusive. Reducing the complexity to monolayers has the potential to simplify grain boundary engineering and may offer real-space imaging with submolecular resolution using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Herein, the authors report the observation of quasi-periodic nanoscale chirality switching in self-assembled molecular networks, in combination with twinning, as revealed by STM at the liquid/solid interface. The width of the chiral domain structure peaks at 12-19 nm. Adjacent domains having opposite chirality are connected continuously through interdigitated alkoxy chains forming a 1D defect-free domain border, reflecting a mirror twin boundary. Solvent co-adsorption and the inherent conformational adaptability of the alkoxy chains turn out to be crucial factors in shaping grain boundaries. Moreover, the epitaxial interaction with the substrate plays a role in the nanoscale chirality reversal as well.

Spontaneous and scanning-assisted desorption-adsorption dynamics in porous supramolecular networks at the solution-solid interface

Self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) are formed by the spontaneous assembly of molecules on surfaces. On conductive atomically flat surfaces, and also at the liquid-solid interface, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can follow their growth dynamics. Desorption and adsorption dynamics are difficult to probe through the liquid-solid interface. Porous molecular networks are of particular interest because they may act as platforms for sensing and host-guest chemistry. Very little is known though about their stability, particularly in a liquid environment. To this end, we have investigated the desorption/adsorption dynamics of supramolecular porous monolayers of alkoxylated dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivatives at the interface between highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, the substrate, and 1-phenyloctane, the liquid. To trace the dynamics, structurally analogous chiral DBA derivatives were used as marker molecules, which co-assemble with the achiral ones forming the supramolecular network. This approach reveals the time scales of the adsorption/desorption dynamics, the significance of temperature, and the important role of the STM tip in inducing dynamics.

s-Indacene Revisited: Modular Synthesis and Modulation of Structures and Molecular Orbitals of Hexaaryl Derivatives

Though s-indacene is an intriguing antiaromatic hydrocarbon of 12 π-electrons, it has been underrepresented due to the lack of efficient and versatile methods to prepare stable derivatives. Herein we report a concise and modular synthetic method for hexaaryl-s-indacene derivatives bearing electron-donating/-accepting groups at specific positions to furnish C_2h-, D_2h-, and C_2v-symmetric substitution patterns. We also report the effects of substituents on their molecular structures, frontier molecular orbital (MO) levels, and magnetically induced ring current tropicities. Both theoretical calculations and X-ray structure analyses indicate that the derivatives of the C_2h-substitution pattern adopt different C_2h structures with significant bond length alternation depending on the electronic property of the substituents. Due to the nonuniform distribution of the frontier MOs, their energy levels are selectively modulated by the electron-donating substituents. This leads to the inversion of the HOMO and HOMO-1 sequences with respect to those of the intrinsic s-indacene as theoretically predicted and experimentally proven by the absorption spectra at visible and near-infrared regions. The NICS values and the ¹H NMR chemical shifts of the s-indacene derivatives indicate their weak antiaromaticity. The different tropicities are explained by the modulation of the HOMO and HOMO-1 levels. In addition, for the hexaxylyl derivative, weak fluorescence from the S₂ excited state was detected due to the large energy gap between the S₁ and S₂ states. Notably, an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) fabricated using the hexaxylyl derivative exhibited moderate hole carrier mobility, a result which opens the door for optoelectronic applications of s-indacene derivatives.

Symmetry and spacing controls in periodic covalent functionalization of graphite surfaces templated by self-assembled molecular networks

We herein present the periodic covalent functionalization of graphite surfaces, creating a range of patterns of different symmetries and pitches at the nanoscale. Self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) of rhombic-shaped bis(dehydrobenzo[12]annulene) (bisDBA) derivatives having alkyl chain substituents of different lengths were used as templates for covalent grafting of electrochemically generated aryl radicals. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations at the 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene/graphite interface revealed that these molecules form a variety of networks that contain pores of different shapes and sizes. The covalently functionalized surfaces show hexagonal, oblique, and quasi-rectangular periodicities. This is attributed to the favorable aryl radical addition at the pore(s). We also confirmed the successful transmission of chirality information from the SAMNs to the alignment of the grafted aryls. In one case, the addition of a guest molecule was used to switch the SAMN symmetry and periodicity, leading to a change in the functionalized surface periodicity from oblique to hexagonal in the presence of the guest molecule. This contribution highlights the potential of SAMNs as templates for the controlled formation of nanopatterned carbon materials.

Dianion and Dication of Tetracyclopentatetraphenylene as Decoupled Annulene-within-an-Annulene Models

The dianion and dication of tetramesityl-substituted tetracyclopentatetraphenylene, a circulene consisting of alternating five- and six-membered rings, have been generated by reduction with alkali metals and oxidation with antimony(V) halides, respectively. They are theoretically predicted to adopt double annulenoid structures called annulene-within-an-annulene models in which the outer and inner conjugation circuits are significantly decoupled. The theoretical structures were experimentally proven by X-ray crystallographic analyses and the electronic configurations were supported by MCD spectra. Based on the ¹³ C NMR chemical shifts, negative and positive charges are shown to be located mainly at the outer periphery, indicating that the dianion and dication have delocalized 22-π and 18-π electron outer perimeters, respectively, and 8-π electron structure at the inner ring. Notably, the dianion has an open-shell character, whereas the dication has a closed-shell ground state.

Chirality in porous self-assembled monolayer networks at liquid/solid interfaces: induction, reversion, recognition and transfer

Chirality in two dimensions (2D) has attracted increasing attention with regard to interesting fundamental aspects as well as potential applications. This article reports several aspects of supramolecular chirality control as exemplified by self-assembled monolayer networks (SAMNs) formed by a class of chiral building blocks consisting of a triangular conjugated core and alkoxy chains on the periphery. It highlights 2D chirality induction phenomena through a classic "sergeants-and-soldiers" mechanism, in which the inducer is incorporated into a network component, as well as through a "supramolecular host-guest" mechanism, in which the inducer is entrapped in the porous space, leading to counterintuitive chirality reversal. Stereochemical control can be extended to three dimensions too, based on interlayer hydrogen bonding of the same class of building blocks bearing hydroxy groups, exhibiting diastereospecific bilayer formation at both single molecule level and supramolecular level arising from orientation between the top and bottom layers. Finally, we showcase that homochiral SAMNs can also be used as templates for the grafting of in situ generated aryl radicals, by covalent bond formation to the basal graphitic surface, thereby yielding topologically chiral functionalized graphite, and thus extending the potential of chiral SAMNs.

Hierarchical two-dimensional molecular assembly through dynamic combination of conformational states at the liquid/solid interface

Self-sorting of multiple building blocks for correctly positioning molecules through orthogonal recognition is a promising strategy for construction of a hierarchical self-assembled molecular network (SAMN) on a surface. Herein we report that a trigonal molecule, dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivative having three tetradecyloxy chains and three hydroxy groups in an alternating manner, forms hierarchical triangular clusters of different sizes ranging from 2.4 to 16.4 nm, consisting of 3 to 78 molecules, respectively, at the liquid/graphite interface. The key is the dynamic combination of three different conformational states, which is solvent and concentration dependent. The present knowledge extends design strategies for production of sophisticated hierarchical SAMNs using a single component at the liquid/solid interface.

Trapping a pentagonal molecule in a self-assembled molecular network: an alkoxylated isosceles triangular molecule does the job

We herein report a unique example of on-surface adaptive self-assembly. A pentagon-shaped macrocycle, cyclic [5]meta-phenyleneacetylene [5]CMPA, is trapped by the adaptive supramolecular network formed by an isosceles triangular molecule, alkoxy substituted dehydrobenzo[14]annulene [14]ISODBA at the liquid/graphite interface, leading to a highly ordered and large-area bicomponent self-assembled molecular network (SAMN), as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Stereospecific Epitaxial Growth of Bilayered Porous Molecular Networks

Stereocontrolled multilayer growth of supramolecular porous networks at the interface between graphite and a solution was investigated. For this study, we designed a chiral dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) building block bearing alkoxy chains substituted at the 2 position with hydroxy groups, which enable van der Waals stabilization in a layer and potential hydrogen-bonding interactions between the layers. Bias voltage-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments revealed the diastereospecificity of the bilayer with respect to both the intrinsic chirality of the building blocks and the supramolecular chirality of the self-assembled networks. Top and bottom layers within the same crystalline domain were composed of the same enantiomers but displayed opposite supramolecular chiralities.

Supramolecular Metallacycles and Their Binding of Fullerenes

The synthesis of a new triaminoguanidinium-based ligand with three tris-chelating [NNO]-binding pockets and C3 symmetry is described. The reaction of tris-(2-pyridinylene-N-oxide)triaminoguanidinium salts with zinc(II) formate leads to the formation of cyclic supramolecular coordination compounds which in solution bind fullerenes in their spherical cavities. The rapid encapsulation of C60 can be observed by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction and is verified using computation.

Electrostatically Driven Guest Binding in Self-Assembled Molecular Network of Hexagonal Pyridine Macrocycle at the Liquid/Solid Interface: Symmetry Breaking Induced by Coadsorbed Solvent Molecules

We present here the construction of a self-assembled two-dimensional network at the liquid/solid interface using a hexagonal pyridine macrocycle which binds an organic cation in its intrinsic porous space by electrostatic interactions. For this purpose, a hexagonal pyridinylene-butadiynylene macrocycle (PyBM) having six octyloxymethyl groups, PyBM-C8, was synthesized. As guests, tropylium (Tr) tetrafluoroborate and trioxatriangulenium (TOTA) hexafluorophosphate were used. In this study, we focused on (i) the network patterns of PyBM-C8 which change in response to its concentration and (ii) the position of the guest immobilized in the porous space of the macrocycle. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations at the interface of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) revealed that PyBM-C8 formed four different polymorphs, oblique, loose hexagonal, linear, and rectangular, depending on the solute concentration and annealing treatment. Solvent TCB molecules are likely coadsorbed to not only the intrinsically porous space of PyBM-C8 (internal TCB) but also the space outside of the macrocycle between its alkyl chains (external TCB) in most of the cases. Upon adding the guest cation, whereas small Tr was not visualized in the pore due to size mismatching, larger TOTA was clearly observed in each pore. In addition, based on high-resolution STM images of the rhombus packing pattern of PyBM-C8, we revealed experimentally that TOTA was placed at an off-center position of the deformed hexagonal macrocyclic core in the rhombus pattern. On the basis of the molecular mechanics calculations, we hypothesize that the off-center location of TOTA is due to deformation of the hexagonal macrocycle through interaction with two external TCB molecules located at opposite edges of the macrocyclic core. Symmetry breaking of the macrocyclic host framework induced by coadsorbed surrounding solvent molecules thus plays a significant role in host-guest complexation at the liquid/solid interface.

On-Surface Evolution of meso-Isomerism in Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Assemblies

Chiral structures created through the adsorption of molecules onto achiral surfaces play pivotal roles in many fields of science and engineering. Here, we present a systematic study of a novel chiral phenomenon on a surface in terms of organizational chirality, that is, meso-isomerism, through coverage-driven hierarchical polymorphic transitions of supramolecular assemblies of highly symmetric π-conjugated molecules. Four coverage-dependent phases of dehydrobenzo[12]annulene were uniformly fabricated on Ag(111), exhibiting unique chiral characteristics from the single-molecule level to two-dimensional supramolecular assemblies. All coverage-driven phase transitions stem from adsorption-induced pseudo-diastereomerism, and our observation of a lemniscate-type (∞) supramolecular configuration clearly reveals a drastic chiral phase transition from an enantiomeric chiral domain to a meso-isomeric achiral domain. These findings provide new insights into controlling two-dimensional chiral architectures on surfaces.

9,10-Dihydro- as-indacenodithiophenes: Isomers with an as-Indacene Core

Two isomers of 9,10-dihydro- as-indacenodithiophenes (DIDTs) and the corresponding diketones having an as-indacene core were synthesized. Their thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were investigated, revealing that they depend on the direction of the fusion of the thiophene rings. For the DIDTs, the effect of the mode of ring fusion on the physical properties is discussed by comparison with the previously reported derivatives of DIDT isomers with an s-indacene core. The observed difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of the DIDT isomers is ascribed to the efficiency of π-conjugation, which depends on α- or β-linkage between the terminal thiophenes with the central benzene ring. In addition, the effect of the peripheral aromatic ring (thiophene or benzene) is elucidated by comparison with indeno[2,1- a]fluorene (DIF) bearing an as-indacene core. The HOMO levels of DIDTs are significantly raised compared to that of structurally related DIF because of electron-donating character of the thiophene rings. For the DIDT diketones, structural effect due to the proximate carbonyl groups is discussed by comparison with the isomers with remote carbonyl groups. In diketones bearing proximate carbonyl groups, the LUMO levels are destabilized owing to antibonding interaction between the carbonyl oxygen atoms, resulting in approach of the LUMO and LUMO+1 energy levels.

Steric and Electronic Effects of Electrochemically Generated Aryl Radicals on Grafting of the Graphite Surface

Grafting of aryl radicals generated by electrochemical reduction of aryldiazonium salts has been extensively studied on various surfaces. However, there exists two unclear aspects; the first one is the generality of the blocking ability of simple functional groups toward multilayer growth, and the second one is the electronic impact of substituent groups of aryl radicals on grafting efficiency. To address these aspects, we have studied the electrochemical functionalization of graphite using aryldiazonium salts having electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups at the 3,4,5-positions. Atomic force microscopy investigation of the functionalized surfaces revealed the formation of monolayers for all aryldiazonium salts, and thus, nitro, carboxy, ester, methyl, and methoxy groups at the 3,4,5-positions of the benzene ring suppress polyaryl growth. The degree of grafting estimated by scanning tunneling microscopy imaging and Raman spectroscopy of the functionalized surfaces depends on the electronic state of the aryl radicals, in which the radicals with electron-donating groups show a high degree of functionalization, whereas those with electron-withdrawing groups exhibit a low degree of functionalization. We discuss several possibilities that affect grafting density. Though there are several factors, we hypothesize that one factor to explain the observed reactivity trend is the electronic property of the aryl radicals, namely, the relative position of the singly occupied molecular orbital energy levels of the aryl radicals with respect to the graphite Fermi energy level.

Local Hemodynamic Conditions Associated with Focal Changes in the Intracranial Aneurysm Wall

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Aneurysm hemodynamics has been associated with wall histology and inflammation. We investigated associations between local hemodynamics and focal wall changes visible intraoperatively.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Computational fluid dynamics models were constructed from 3D images of 65 aneurysms treated surgically. Aneurysm regions with different visual appearances were identified in intraoperative videos: 1) "atherosclerotic" (yellow), 2) "hyperplastic" (white), 3) "thin" (red), 4) rupture site, and 5) "normal" (similar to parent artery), They were marked on 3D reconstructions. Regional hemodynamics was characterized by the following: wall shear stress, oscillatory shear index, relative residence time, wall shear stress gradient and divergence, gradient oscillatory number, and dynamic pressure; these were compared using the Mann-Whitney test.

RESULTS

Hyperplastic regions had lower average wall shear stress (P = .005) and pressure (P = .009) than normal regions. Flow conditions in atherosclerotic and hyperplastic regions were similar but had higher average relative residence time (P = .03) and oscillatory shear index (P = .04) than thin regions. Hyperplastic regions also had a higher average gradient oscillatory number (P = .002) than thin regions. Thin regions had lower average relative residence time (P < .001), oscillatory shear index (P = .006), and gradient oscillatory number (P < .001) than normal regions, and higher average wall shear stress (P = .006) and pressure (P = .009) than hyperplastic regions. Thin regions tended to be aligned with the flow stream, while atherosclerotic and hyperplastic regions tended to be aligned with recirculation zones.

CONCLUSIONS

Local hemodynamics is associated with visible focal wall changes. Slow swirling flow with low and oscillatory wall shear stress was associated with atherosclerotic and hyperplastic changes. High flow conditions prevalent in regions near the flow impingement site characterized by higher and less oscillatory wall shear stress were associated with local "thinning" of the wall.

Self-Assembled Monolayers as Templates for Linearly Nanopatterned Covalent Chemical Functionalization of Graphite and Graphene Surfaces

An approach for nanoscale covalent functionalization of graphite surfaces employing self-assembled molecular monolayers of n-alkanes as templating masks is presented. Linearly aligned aryl groups with a lateral periodicity of 5 or 7 nm are demonstrated utilizing molecular templates of different lengths. The key feature of this approach is the use of a phase separated solution double layer consisting of a thin organic layer containing template molecules topped by an aqueous layer containing aryldiazonium molecules capable of electrochemical reduction to generate aryl radicals which bring about surface grafting. Upon sweeping of the potential, lateral displacement dynamics at the n-alkane terminal edges acts in conjunction with electrochemical diffusion to result in templated covalent bond formation in a linear fashion. This protocol was demonstrated to be applicable to linear grafting of graphene. The present processing described herein is useful for the realization of rationally designed nanoscale materials.

Electrostatically Driven Guest Binding in a Self-Assembled Porous Network at the Liquid/Solid Interface

We present here the construction of a self-assembled two-dimensional (2D) porous monolayer bearing a highly polar 2D space to study guest co-adsorption through electrostatic interactions at the liquid/solid interface. For this purpose, a dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivative, DBA-TeEG, having tetraethylene glycol (TeEG) groups at the end of the three alternating alkoxy chains connected by p-phenylene linkers was synthesized. As a reference host molecule, DBA-C10, having nonpolar C₁₀ alkyl chains at three alternating terminals, was employed. As guest molecules, hexagonal phenylene-ethynylene macrocycles (PEMs) attached by triethylene glycol (TEG) ester and hexyl ester groups, PEM-TEG and PEM-C6, respectively, at each vertex of the macrocyclic periphery were used. Scanning tunneling microscopy observations at the 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene/highly oriented pyrolytic graphite interface revealed that PEM-TEG was immobilized in the pores formed by DBA-TeEG at higher probability because of electrostatic interactions such as dipole-dipole and hydrogen bonding interactions between oligoether units of the host and guest, in comparison to PEM-C6 with nonpolar groups. These observations are discussed based on molecular mechanics simulations to investigate the role of the polar functional groups. When a nonpolar host matrix formed by DBA-C10 was used, however, only phase separation and preferential adsorption were observed; virtually no host-guest complexation was discernible. This is ascribed to the strong affinity between the guest molecules which form by themselves densely packed van der Waals networks on the surface.

Computational insight into the origin of unexpected contrast in chiral markers as revealed by STM

Internal substituents can serve the double purpose of generating stereogenic centers and (potentially) being identifiable with Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) in 2D self-assembled molecular layers. We investigate computationally the origin of stark contrast variations in STM images of chirally substituted self-assembled organic films. STM images of alkyl derivatives with secondary -CH₃ and -OH groups have been simulated. Density functional theory calculations reveal bias-dependent contrast reversals in the substituent regions: a lack of local density of states in the relevant energy regime results in 'dark spots' in the simulated STM images, which turn bright upon increasing the bias voltage.

Hexagonal Molecular Tiling by Hexagonal Macrocycles at the Liquid/Solid Interface: Structural Effects on Packing Geometry

We present here hexagonal tiling using hexagonal phenylene-ethynylene and phenylene-butadiynylene macrocycles attached by alkyl ester groups, PEM-C6 and PBM-C8, respectively, or triethylene glycol ester groups, PEM-TEG and PBM-TEG, respectively, at each vertex of the macrocyclic periphery at the liquid/solid interface. In this study, we focused on the effects of macrocyclic core size and the chemical properties of side chains attached to macrocyclic cores as well as solute concentrations on the hexagonal geometry of self-assembled monolayers. STM observations at the 1,2,4-trichrolobenzene/graphite interface revealed that PEM-C6 formed a honeycomb structure by van der Waals interactions between the interdigitated alkyl chains. However, upon increasing solute concentration, it changed to more dense hexagonal structure (tentatively called loose hexagonal structure I). In contrast, PBM-C8 formed loose hexagonal structure II of a slightly different packing mode at low concentration, while at high concentration it formed a high-density hexagonal structure in which alkyl chains are not adsorbed on the surface (dense hexagonal structure). In the dense hexagonal structure, macrocyclic cores are linked by hydrogen bonds between the ester carbonyl oxygen and the aromatic hydrogen atoms of the neighboring macrocycles. The packing geometries of loose hexagonal structures of PEM-C6 and PBM-C8 are different due to the different distance between the attachment of the alkyl ester groups which are located in confined space. On the other hand, PEM-TEG and PBM-TEG formed dense hexagonal structures, similar to PBM-C8 at high concentration, with their TEG units not adsorbed on the surface.

Transfer of chiral information from a chiral solvent to a two-dimensional network

Chiral induction in self-assembled monolayers has garnered considerable attention in the recent past, not only due to its importance in chiral resolution and enantioselective heterogeneous catalysis but also because of its relevance to the origin of homochirality in life. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of homochirality in a supramolecular low-density network formed by achiral molecules at the interface of a chiral solvent and an atomically-flat achiral substrate. We focus on the impact of structure and functionality of the adsorbate and the chiral solvent on the chiral induction efficiency in self-assembled physisorbed monolayers, as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Different induction mechanisms are proposed and evaluated, with the assistance of advanced molecular modeling simulations.

Novel Aromatics: From Synthesis to Applications

Host-Guest Chemistry in Integrated Porous Space Formed by Molecular Self-Assembly at Liquid-Solid Interfaces

Host-guest chemistry in two-dimensional (2D) space, that is, physisorbed monolayers of a single atom or a single molecular thickness on surfaces, has become a subject of intense current interest because of perspectives for various applications in molecular-scale electronics, selective sensors, and tailored catalysis. Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used as a powerful tool for the visualization of molecules in real space on a conducting substrate surface. For more than a decade, we have been investigating the self-assembly of a series of triangle-shaped phenylene-ethynylene macrocycles called dehydrobenzo[12]annulenes (DBAs). These molecules are substituted with six alkyl chains and are capable of forming hexagonal porous 2D molecular networks via van der Waals interactions between interdigitated alkyl chains at the interface of organic solvents and graphite. The dimension of the nanoporous space or nanowell formed by the self-assembly of DBAs can be controlled from 1.6 to 4.7 nm by simply changing the alkyl chain length from C₆ to C₂₀. Single molecules as well as homoclusters and heteroclusters are capable of coadsorbing within the host matrix using shape- and size-complementarity principles. Moreover, on the basis of the versatility of the DBA molecules that allows chemical modification of the alkyl chain terminals, we were able to decorate the interior space of the nanoporous networks with functional groups such as azobenzenedicarboxylic acid for photoresponsive guest adsorption/desorption or fluoroalkanes and tetraethylene glycol groups for selective guest binding by electrostatic interactions and zinc-porphyrin units for complexation with a guest by charge-transfer interactions. In this Feature Article, we describe the general aspects of molecular self-assembly at liquid/solid interfaces, followed by the formation of programmed porous molecular networks using rationally designed molecular building blocks. We focus on our own work involving host-guest chemistry in integrated nanoporous space that is modified for specific purposes.

Area-selective passivation of sp2 carbon surfaces by supramolecular self-assembly

Altering the chemical reactivity of graphene can offer new opportunities for various applications. Here, we report that monolayers of densely packed n-pentacontane significantly reduce the covalent grafting of aryl radicals to graphitic surfaces. The effect is highly local in nature and on fully covered substrates grafting can occur only at monolayer imperfections such as interdomain borders and vacancy defects. Grafting partially covered substrates primarily results in the covalent modification of uncoated areas.

Synthesis and structures of [2n](2,7)naphthalenophanes (n = 2–4)

Reductive coupling of 2,7-bis(bromomethyl)naphthalene using phenyllithium gave anti-[22](2,7)naphthalenophane, [23](2,7)naphthalenophane, and [24](2,7)naphthalenophane, the distribution of which was dependent on the reaction conditions. The structure of the first compound was established by X-ray crystallographic analysis. On the basis of the similarity between the NMR and UV spectra of [23](2,7)naphthalenophane with those reported for syn-[22](2,7)naphthalenophane, we conclude that the compound originally assigned to be syn-4 was in fact 6.

On the formation of concentric 2D multicomponent assemblies at the solution–solid interface

We report on the design and fabrication of a four-component supramolecular network consisting of three concentric shells around a central guest.

Construction of cyclic arrays of Zn-porphyrin units and their guest binding at the solid-liquid interface

Cyclic arrays consisting of six zinc-porphyrin units are constructed by the supramolecular self-assembly of a dehydrobenzo[12]-annulene derivative having three zinc porphyrin units at the liquid/graphite interface. Binding with C₆₀ furnishes cyclic hexameric arrays of the complexes on the surface.

Complex Chiral Induction Processes at the Solution/Solid Interface

Two-dimensional supramolecular chirality is often achieved by confining molecules against a solid surface. The sergeants-soldiers principle is a popular strategy to fabricate chiral surfaces using predominantly achiral molecules. In this method, achiral molecules (the soldiers) are forced to assemble in a chiral fashion by mixing them with a small percentage of structurally similar chiral molecules (the sergeants). The full complexity of the amplification processes in chiral induction studies is rarely revealed due to the specific experimental conditions used. Here we report the evolution of chirality in mixed supramolecular networks of chiral and achiral dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivatives using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the solution/solid interface. The experiments were carried out in the high sergeants-soldiers mole ratio regime in relatively concentrated solutions. Variation in the sergeants/soldiers composition at a constant solution concentration revealed different mole ratio regimes where either amplification of supramolecular handedness as defined by the sergeant chirality or its reversal was observed. The chiral induction/reversal processes were found to be a convolution of different phenomena occurring at the solution-solid interface namely, structural polymorphism, competitive adsorption and adaptive host-guest recognition. Grasping the full complexity of chiral amplification processes as described here is a stepping-stone toward developing a predictive understanding of chiral amplification processes.

Self-Assembled Dehydro[24]annulene Monolayers at the Liquid/Solid Interface: Toward On-Surface Synthesis of Tubular π-Conjugated Nanowires

We have studied the self-assembly behavior of dehydro[24]annulene (D24A) derivatives 1, 2a-2d, and 3a-3c at the liquid/solid interface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Both the relative placement and the nature of the four D24A substituents strongly influence the self-assembly pattern. Overall, the eight D24A derivatives examined in this study display seven types of 2D packing patterns. The D24A derivatives 1, 2a, and 3a have either two or four stearate groups and adopt face-on configurations of their macrocyclic cores with respect to the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface. Their 2D packing pattern is determined by the interchain spacings and number of stearate substituents. The D24A derivatives 2b-2d and 3b-3c bear hydrogen-bonding carbamate groups to further strengthen intermolecular interactions. Face-on patterns were also observed for most of these compounds, while an unstable edge-on self-assembly was observed in the case of 2b at room temperature. Stable edge-on self-assemblies of D24A derivatives were sought for this work as an important stepping stone to achieving the on-surface topochemical polymerization of these carbon-rich macrocycles into tubular π-conjugated nanowires. The overall factors determining the 2D packing patterns of D24As at the liquid/solid interface are discussed on the basis of theoretical simulations, providing useful guidelines for controlling the self-assembly pattern of future D24A macrocycles.

Diindenopyrenes: Extended 1,6- and 1,8-Pyrenoquinodimethanes with Singlet Diradical Characters

Diindenopyrene 4b and its diastereomer, which are extended homologues of 1,6- and 1,8-pyrenoquinodimethanes fused by indene units, respectively, were synthesized by reaction of 1,4,5,8-tetrakis(mesitylethynyl)naphthalene (7) with bis(2,4,6-trimethylpyridine)iodine(I) hexafluorophosphate via cationic cyclization mechanisms at both centers of reaction. Unexpectedly, reaction of 7 with iodine, a reagent that typically gives products of cationic cyclization, gave cycloheptapentalenoindenophenalene derivative 9b and its diastereomer incorporating an azulene unit at one end of the π framework, via two different modes (radical and cationic) of cyclization at each reaction site. The physical properties of the products are presented, and the dual modes of cyclization of 7 and its model compound with only one reaction center are discussed.

Periodic Functionalization of Surface-Confined Pores in a Two-Dimensional Porous Network Using a Tailored Molecular Building Block

We present here the periodic functionalization of a two-dimensional (2D) porous molecular network using a tailored molecular building block. For this purpose, a dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivative, 1-isoDBA, having an isophthalic acid unit connected by an azobenzene linker to a C12 alkyl chain and five C14 chains, was designed and synthesized. After the optimization of monolayer preparation conditions at the 1,2,4-trichlorobezene (TCB)/graphite interface, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observation of the self-assembled monolayer of 1-isoDBA revealed the formation of extended domains of a porous honeycomb-type molecular network, which consists of periodically located nanowells each functionalized by a cyclic hexamer of hydrogen-bonded isophthalic acid units and those without functional groups. This result demonstrates that the present strategy based on precise molecular design is a viable route to site-specific functionalization of surface-confined nanowells. The nanowells of different size can be used for guest coadsorption of different guests, coronene COR and hexakis[4-(phenylethynyl)phenylethynyl]benzene HPEPEB, whose size and shape match the respective nanowells. STM observation of a ternary mixture (1-isoDBA/COR/HPEPEB) at the TCB/graphite interface revealed the site-selective immobilization of the two different guest molecules at the respective nanowells, producing a highly ordered three-component 2D structure.

Formation of Multicomponent Star Structures at the Liquid/Solid Interface

To demonstrate key roles of multiple interactions between multiple components and multiple phases in the formation of an uncommon self-assembling pattern, we present here the construction of a porous hexagonal star (h-star) structure using a trigonal molecular building block at the liquid/solid interface. For this purpose, self-assembly of hexaalkoxy-substituted dehydrobenzo[12]annulene derivatives DBA-OCns was investigated at the tetradecane/graphite interface by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Monolayer structures were significantly influenced by coadsorbed tetradecane molecules depending on the alkyl chains length (C13-C16) of DBA-OCn. However, none of DBA-OCn molecules formed the expected trigonal complexes, indicating that an additional driving force is necessary for the formation of the trigonal complex and its assembly into the h-star structure. As a first approach, we employed the "guest induced structural change" for the formation of the h-star structure. In the presence of two guest molecules, nonsubstituted DBA and hexakis(phenylethynyl)benzene which fit the respective pores, an h-star structure was formed by DBA-OC15 at the tetradecane/graphite interface. Moreover, a tetradecane molecule was coadsorbed between a pair of alkyl chains of DBA-OC15, thereby blocking the interdigitation of the alkyl chain pairs. Therefore, the h-star structure results from the self-assembly of the four molecular components including the solvent molecule. The second approach is based on aggregation of perfluoroalkyl chains via fluorophilicity of DBA-F, in which the perfluoroalkyl groups are substituted at the end of three alkyl chains of DBA-OCn via p-phenylene linkers. A trigonal complex consisting of DBA-F and three tetradecane molecules formed an h-star structure, in which the perfluoroalkyl groups that orient into the alkane solution phase aggregated at the hexagonal pore via fluorophilicity. The present result provides useful insight into the design and control of complex molecular self-assembly at the liquid/solid interface.
