Improving temperature characteristics of GaN-based ultraviolet laser diodes by using InGaN/AlGaN quantum wells

Temperature characteristics of GaN-based laser diodes are investigated. It is noted that the characteristic temperature of the threshold current (T0) decreases with decreasing lasing wavelength for GaN-based LDs. The performance deteriorates seriously for UV LDs at high temperature. It is ascribed to the increase of carriers escaping from quantum wells due to the lower potential barrier height. In this Letter, AlGaN is used as the barrier layer in UV LDs instead of GaN to improve the temperature characteristic of the threshold current and slope efficiency by increasing the potential barrier height of quantum wells. Based on this structure, a high output power of 4.6 W is obtained at the injection current of 3.8 A; its lasing wavelength is 386.8 nm.

Patient Cranial Angle and Intrafractional Stability in CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery: A Retrospective Analysis

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether variations in cranial angles and treatment accuracy during CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery necessitate adjustment of the margins of the planning target volume. Patients and Methods: Data from 66 patients receiving CyberKnife treatment for brain tumors were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were immobilized using a thermoplastic mask and headrest. The cranial angle was measured on planning CT and patients were divided into 2 groups: ≤10° (Group A) and >10° (Group B). Intrafractional motion was recorded using the CyberKnife tracking system over 50 min. Translational and rotational errors were compared between groups, and planning target volume margins were calculated. Results: In Group A, significant translational error differences were found along with the X-axis over time (P < .02). In Group B, significant differences occurred along with the Z-axis (P < .03). No significant rotational or 3-dimensional vector differences were found in either group. Group A had significantly lower Y-axis (P < .045) and roll axis (P < .005) errors compared to Group B. Estimated planning target volume margins in Group A were 0.56 mm (X), 0.46 mm (Y), and 0.47 mm (Z). In Group B, margins were 0.62 mm (X), 0.48 mm (Y), and 0.46 mm (Z). Margins covering 95% of intrafraction motion were 0.49 to 0.50 mm (X, Y, Z) and 0.69 mm (3-dimensional vector) for Group A, and 0.48 to 0.60 mm and 0.79 mm for Group B. With a 1-mm margin, complete coverage was achieved in Group A while 2.1% of vectors in Group B exceeded 1 mm. Conclusion: Adjusting cranial angle to ≤10° during thermoplastic mask molding provided better or similar intrafractional stability compared to >10°.

Identification and analysis of differently expressed transcription factors in aristolochic acid nephropathy

BACKGROUND

Aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) is a rapidly progressive interstitial nephropathy caused by Aristolochic acid (AA). AAN is associated with the development of nephropathy and urothelial carcinoma. It is estimated that more than 100 million people worldwide are at risk of developing AAN. However, the underlying mechanisms driving renal deterioration in AAN remain poorly understood, and the treatment options are limited.

METHODS

We obtained GSE27168 and GSE136276 series matrix data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) related to AAN. Using the R Studio environment, we applied the limma package and WGCNA package to identify co-differently expressed genes (co-DEGs). By GO/KEGG/GSVA analysis, we revealed common biological pathways. Subsequently, co-DEGs were subjected to the String database to construct a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. The MCC algorithms implemented in the Cytohubba plugin were employed to identify hub genes. The hub genes were cross-referenced with the transcription factor (TF) database to identify hub TFs. Immune infiltration analysis was performed to identify key immune cell groups by utilizing CIBERSORT. The expressions of AAN-associated hub TFs were verified in vivo and in vitro. Finally, siRNA intervention was performed on the two TFs to verify their regulatory effect in AAN.

RESULTS

Our analysis identified 88 co-DEGs through the "limma" and "WGCNA" R packages. A PPI network comprising 53 nodes and 34 edges was constructed with a confidence level >0.4. ATF3 and c-JUN were identified as hub TFs potentially linked to AAN. Additionally, expressions of ATF3 and c-JUN positively correlated with monocytes, basophils, and vessels, and negatively correlated with eosinophils and endothelial cells. We observed a significant increase in protein and mRNA levels of these two hub TFs. Furthermore, it was found that siRNA intervention targeting ATF3, but not c-JUN, alleviated cell damage induced by AA. The knockdown of ATF3 protects against oxidative stress and inflammation in the AAN cell model.

CONCLUSION

This study provides novel insights into the role of ATF3 in AAN. The comprehensive analysis sheds light on the molecular mechanisms and identifies potential biomarkers and drug targets for AAN treatment.

Global research trends and hotspots of Helicobacter pylori eradication based on clinical trial registration platforms: A cross-sectional analysis

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to obtain an overview of clinical trials on Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication and analyze the global trends and hotspots in this field.

METHODS

We collected the data from clinical trials focused on H. pylori eradication in the primary clinical trial registries from 2000 to 2022 in the world. Then we analyzed the research trends and hotspots in H. pylori eradication regimens in different regions at different periods.

RESULTS

A total of 780 clinical trials were included, which were mainly conducted in Asia (682), followed by Europe (59), Africa (20), North America (16), South America (7), Oceania (2). The most active countries were China (343), Iran (140), South Korea (63), and Japan (73). "Bismuth-containing quadruple therapy (BQT)" was the most studied regimen (159, 20.38 %). Additionally, clinical trials focused on potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs)-based therapy, probiotics, and high-dose dual therapy (HDDT) were constantly increasing. BQT received the most attention in China (26.53 %) and Iran (22.14 %), while it was tailored therapy in South Korea (23.29 %). P-CABs-based therapy was the main reseach hotspot in Japan (61.90 %).

CONCLUSION

How to eradicate H. pylori infection has been a heated research topic. BQT, P-CABs-based therapy, probiotics, and HDDT attracted the most attention in recent years.

Vincamine as an agonist of G-protein-coupled receptor 40 effectively ameliorates diabetic peripheral neuropathy in mice

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of diabetes, which has yet no curable medication. Neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction are tightly linked to DPN pathology. G-protein-coupled receptor 40 (GPR40) is predominantly expressed in pancreatic β-cells, but also in spinal dorsal horn and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, regulating neuropathic pain. We previously have reported that vincamine (Vin), a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid extracted from Madagascar periwinkle, is a GPR40 agonist. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic potential of Vin in ameliorating the DPN-like pathology in diabetic mice. Both STZ-induced type 1 (T1DM) and db/db type 2 diabetic (T2DM) mice were used to establish late-stage DPN model (DPN mice), which were administered Vin (30 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.p.) for 4 weeks. We showed that Vin administration did not lower blood glucose levels, but significantly ameliorated neurological dysfunctions in DPN mice. Vin administration improved the blood flow velocities and blood perfusion areas of foot pads and sciatic nerve tissues in DPN mice. We demonstrated that Vin administration protected against sciatic nerve myelin sheath injury and ameliorated foot skin intraepidermal nerve fiber (IENF) density impairment in DPN mice. Moreover, Vin suppressed NLRP3 inflammasome activation through either β-Arrestin2 or β-Arrestin2/IκBα/NF-κB signaling, improved mitochondrial dysfunction through CaMKKβ/AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling and alleviated oxidative stress through Nrf2 signaling in the sciatic nerve tissues of DPN mice and LPS/ATP-treated RSC96 cells. All the above-mentioned beneficial effects of Vin were abolished by GPR40-specific knockdown in dorsal root ganglia and sciatic nerve tissues. Together, these results support that pharmacological activation of GPR40 as a promising therapeutic strategy for DPN and highlight the potential of Vin in the treatment of this disease.

Application of machine learning and its effects on the development of a nursing guidance mobile app for sarcopenia

BACKGROUND

Aging leads to changes in the body system, such as sarcopenia. This can result in several health issues, particularly physical and mobility dysfunction. Asian people typically have little awareness of sarcopenia. Thus, this study incorporated nursing instruction into the mobile application design to allow users to easily learn about sarcopenia.

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluated a model for predicting high-risk populations for sarcopenia in home settings. We further developed a sarcopenia nursing guidance mobile application and assessed the effectiveness of this application in influencing sarcopenia-related knowledge and self-care awareness among participants.

METHODS

Using a one-group pretest-posttest design, data were collected from 120 participants at a teaching hospital in northern Taiwan. This study used an artificial intelligence algorithm to evaluate a model for predicting high-risk populations for sarcopenia. We developed and assessed the sarcopenia nursing guidance mobile application using a questionnaire based on the Mobile Application Rating Scale.

RESULTS

The application developed in this study enhanced participants' sarcopenia-related knowledge and awareness regarding self-care. After the three-month intervention, the knowledge and awareness was effectively increase, total score was from 4.15 ± 2.35 to 6.65 ± 0.85 and were significant for all questionnaire items (p values < 0.05). On average, 96.1% of the participants were satisfied with the mobile app. The artificial intelligence algorithm positively evaluated the home-use model for predicting high-risk sarcopenia groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The mobile application of the sarcopenia nursing guidance for public use in home settings may help alleviate sarcopenia symptoms and reduce complications by enhancing individuals' self-care awareness and ability.

Short Course Adjuvant Vaginal Cuff Brachytherapy (VCB) in Early Endometrial Cancer: Primary Endpoint Results of the SAVE Randomized Clinical Trial

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Prospective trials in early stage endometrial cancer demonstrate increased locoregional control with adjuvant radiotherapy for patients with high risk features. VCB is widely utilized, yet there is substantial practice variation and limited randomized data examining optimal dose/fractionation. We aimed to study the safety and efficacy of short course VCB compared to commonly used regimens.

MATERIALS/METHODS

We conducted a prospective, randomized, multicenter trial examining short course adjuvant VCB (11 Gy x 2 fractions at the surface) compared with other standard regimens (7 Gy x 3 fractions at 0.5 cm depth, 6 Gy x 5 fractions at the surface, or 5-5.5 Gy x 4 fractions at 0.5 cm depth). Eligible patients underwent hysterectomy and had pathologically confirmed endometrioid adenocarcinoma, serous, clear cell, or carcinosarcoma. Patients with stage I and II cancers were included, with lymphovascular invasion (LVI) required for stage IAG1. The primary outcome was Global Health Status measured by the EORTC QLQ-C30 with a pre-specified non-inferiority margin of 15 points. Secondary outcomes included patient-reported outcomes, toxicities as assessed by CTCAEv5, and patterns of recurrence. Data were collected at each brachytherapy fraction and at 1-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up.

RESULTS

One hundred eight patients were enrolled, 54 in each study arm. Data completion was 94%, 91%, and 77% at 1 month, 6 months, and 12 months, respectively. 70% of patients had endometrioid adenocarcinoma, 18% serous carcinoma, and 12% other histologies. 23% were FIGO grade 1, 33% grade 2, and 43% grade 3 or high risk histologies. The majority of patients were stage I (56% IA, 38% IB). 22% of patients had LVI. The QLQ-C30 Global Health Status for the experimental arm was within the predefined boundary and thus 2 fractions were non-inferior to standard of care at one month (p = 0.000005) and 12 months (p = 0.0005). Using EORTC EN24 for patient reported vaginal/sexual, urologic, and gastrointestinal symptoms, the change in mean patient reported symptom score from baseline to 1 month and baseline to 12 months were not significantly different between arms. Using CTCAEv5, 51 patients experienced short-term AEs related to study treatment, 20 in the experimental arm and 31 in the control arm (p = 0.053). All study treatment-related AEs were grade 1-2, except for two grade 3-4 AEs, both on the control arm. At median follow-up of 19 months, the isolated vaginal control rate in each arm was 100%. There was no significant difference in the total number of recurrences between study arms, with 3 distant and 3 distant/pelvic/vaginal recurrences in the experimental arm, and 2 distant, 2 pelvic, and 1 pelvic/vaginal recurrence in the control arm.

CONCLUSION

Short course VCB is safe with acceptable acute toxicity and non-inferior patient reported outcomes. Short course VCB improves patient convenience and may improve access to care for rural or underserved populations while providing similar local control.

Risk factors for recurrent wheezing after bronchiolitis

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to determine whether there was an association between certain factors in patients with bronchiolitis and recurrent wheezing in childhood.

METHOD

In 2021 we tracked children hospitalized for bronchiolitis at Chengdu Women's and Children's Central Hospital in 2017. The patients were classified into recurrent wheezing group (RWG) and non-recurrent wheezing group (NRWG). Possible risk factors including maternal age, school-age siblings, allergic history, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, atopic family history, severity of the condition, duration of hospitalization, nasopharyngeal secretions culture, blood eosinophil counts, FeNO and skin prick test were compared between the two groups. Continuous variables were analyzed by independent sample t-test for normal distribution and Mann-Whitney U-test for non-normal distribution. Categorical variables were tested using chi-square tests. Multifactor analysis was conducted by stepwise logistics regression analysis.

RESULTS

In total 167 participants were included, of which 26 and 141 were in RWG and NRWG respectively. In RWG children represented higher maternal age (P = 0.02) and greater probability of allergic history, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, atopic family history (odds ratio [OR] = 4.0,3.7, 7.8, 10.9 respectively, P < 0.01). However, school-age siblings, severity of the condition, duration of hospitalization, blood eosinophil counts, fractional exhaled nitric oxide and skin prick test results seemed unrelated to recurrent wheezing. In the subgroup analysis of nasopharyngeal secretion culture, there were more Moraxella catarrhalis-positive in RWG(P = 0.043). Atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and atopic family history were identified as independent risk factors for recurrent wheezing.

CONCLUSION

Some children with bronchiolitis will develop recurrent wheezing, and the risk factors are allergic history, Moraxella catarrhalis infection or colonization, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and atopic family history; the latter three are independent risk factors.

Astrocytic aryl hydrocarbon receptor mediates chronic kidney disease-associated mental disorders involving GLT1 hypofunction and neuronal activity enhancement in the mouse brain

Chronic kidney disease (CKD)-associated mental disorders have been attributed to the excessive accumulation of hemodialysis-resistant indoxyl-3-sulfate (I3S) in the brain. I3S not only induces oxidative stress but is also a potent endogenous agonist of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Here, we investigated the role of AhR in CKD-induced brain disorders using a 5/6 nephrectomy-induced CKD mouse model, which showed increased I3S concentration in both blood and brain, anxiety and impaired novelty recognition, and AhR activation in the anterior cortex. GFAP⁺ reactive astrocytes were increased accompanied with the reduction of glutamate transporter 1 (GLT1) on perineuronal astrocytic processes (PAPs) in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in CKD mice, and these alterations were attenuated in both neural lineage-specific and astrocyte-specific Ahr conditional knockout mice (nAhrCKO and aAhrCKO). By using chronic I3S treatment in primary astrocytes and glia-neuron (GN) mix cultures to mimic the CKD brain microenvironment, we also found significant reduction of GLT1 expression and activity in an AhR-dependent manner. Chronic I3S treatment induced AhR-dependent pro-oxidant Nox1 and AhR-independent anti-oxidant HO-1 expressions. Notably, AhR mediates chronic I3S-induced neuronal activity enhancement and synaptotoxicity in GN mix, not neuron-enriched cortical culture. In CKD mice, neuronal activity enhancement was observed in ACC and hippocampal CA1, and these responses were abrogated by both nAhrCKO and aAhrCKO. Finally, intranasal AhR antagonist CH-223191 administration significantly ameliorated the GLT1/PAPs reduction, increase in c-Fos⁺ neurons, and memory impairment in the CKD mice. Thus, astrocytic AhR plays a crucial role in the CKD-induced disturbance of neuron-astrocyte interaction and mental disorders.

The Influence of Annealing and Film Thickness on the Specific Properties of Co40Fe40Y20 Films

Cobalt Iron Yttrium (CoFeY) magnetic film was made using the sputtering technique in order to investigate the connection between the thickness and annealing procedures. The sample was amorphous as a result of an insufficient thermal driving force according to X-ray diffraction (XRD) examination. The maximum low-frequency alternate-current magnetic susceptibility (χ_ac) values were raised in correlation with the increased thickness and annealing temperatures because the thickness effect and Y addition improved the spin exchange coupling. The best value for a 50 nm film at annealing 300 °C for χ_ac was 0.20. Because electron carriers are less constrained in their conduction at thick film thickness and higher annealing temperatures, the electric resistivity and sheet resistance are lower. At a thickness of 40 nm, the film's maximum surface energy during annealing at 300 °C was 28.7 mJ/mm². This study demonstrated the passage of photon signals through the film due to the thickness effect, which reduced transmittance. The best condition was found to be 50 nm with annealing at 300 °C in this investigation due to high χ_ac, strong adhesion, and low resistivity, which can be used in magnetic fields.

[Influence factors of poor efficacy after flap repair operation in patients with pressure ulcers]

Objective: To investigate the influence factors of poor efficacy after flap repair operation in patients with pressure ulcers. Methods: The retrospective case series study was conducted. From January 2011 to June 2021, 125 patients with stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ pressure ulcers treated in Hainan General Hospital met the inclusion criteria. There were 82 males and 43 females, aged 15-90 (57±20) years. According to the postoperative effects, the patients were divided into poor efficacy group (47 cases) and good efficacy group (78 cases). The clinical data of patients in the two groups were collected, including the age, gender, location, stage, size, and bone exposure of pressure ulcers, preoperative microorganism culture results of wound exudate sample, whether combined with osteomyelitis, diabetes, lower limb paroxysmal myospasm, and gatism or not, the number of surgical debridement combined with negative-pressure wound therapy, type of surgical flap, postoperative position, and preoperative albumin, leukocyte, C-reactive protein (CRP), and hemoglobin. Data were statistically analyzed with independent sample t test, Mann-Whitney U test, and chi-square test. The binary multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to screen the independent risk factors influencing the poor efficacy after flap repair operation in 125 patients with stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ pressure ulcers. Results: The ratio of patients with lower limb paroxysmal myospasm in poor efficacy group was 22/47, which was significantly higher than 3/78 in good efficacy group (χ2=33.83, P<0.01). The preoperative hemoglobin level of patients in poor efficacy group was (102±17) g/L, which was significantly lower than (113±20) g/L in good efficacy group (t=-3.24, P<0.01). The preoperative CRP level of patients was 39.1 (14.1, 91.6) mg/L in poor efficacy group, which was significantly higher than 15.3 (6.6, 42.0) mg/L in good efficacy group (Z=-3.04, P<0.01). There were no statistically significant differences in other indexes between patients in the two groups (P>0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age, lower limb paroxysmal myospasm, and preoperative hemoglobin level were the independent risk factors for poor efficacy after flap repair operation in patients with pressure ulcers (with odds ratios of 1.03, 40.69, and 0.97, 95% confidence intervals of 1.00-1.06, 9.18-180.39, and 0.95-1.00, respectively, P<0.05 or P<0.01). Conclusions: Poor efficacy after flap repair operation in patients with pressure ulcers is affected by many factors, among which the age, lower limb paroxysmal myospasm, and preoperative hemoglobin level are the independent risk factors.

Rapid Acid/Base Switching in Flow Injection Analysis and Isocratic Elution Liquid Chromatography with Mass Spectrometric Detection for Improved Sensitivity

Ion signals in electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry (MS) are affected by addition of acid or base. Acids or bases are typically added to samples to enhance detection of analytes in positive- or negative-ion mode, respectively. To carry out simultaneous monitoring of analytes with different ionogenic moieties by ESI-MS, a rapid acid/base switching system was developed. The system was further coupled with flow injection analysis (FIA) and liquid chromatography (LC) MS. The two variants enable detection of separated analytes immediately after alternating addition of acid and base. The methods were tested using a set of phospholipids (PLs) as analytes. The rapid acid/base switching enhanced signals of some of the PL analytes in both ion modes of MS. Both FIA-MS and LC-MS with acid/base switching show signal enhancements (∼1.3-23.2 times) of some analyte signals when compared with analysis conducted without acid/base switching. The proposed methods are suitable for simultaneous analysis of cationic and anionic analytes. The FIA-MS and LC-MS methods with acid/base switching were also applied in analysis of lipid extract from real samples (sausage and porcine liver). However, the FIA-MS results were affected by ionization competition and isobaric interference due to the complexity of the sample matrix and diversity of PL species. In contrast, the LC-MS mode provides adequate selectivity to observe signal enhancement for specific analyte ions. Overall, alternating addition of acid and base immediately before the ESI source can improve analytical performance without the need to carry out separate analyses targeting different types of analytes.

Patchouli alcohol as a selective estrogen receptor β agonist ameliorates AD-like pathology of APP/PS1 model mice

Clinical evidence shows that postmenpausal women are almost twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) as men of the same age, and estrogen is closely related to the occurrence of AD. Estrogen receptor (ER) α is mainly expressed in the mammary gland and other reproductive organs like uterus while ERβ is largely distributed in the hippocampus and cardiovascular system, suggesting that ERβ selective agonist is a valuable drug against neurodegenerative diseases with low tendency in inducing cancers of breast and other reproductive organs. In this study we identified a natural product patchouli alcohol (PTA) as a selective ERβ agonist which improved the cognitive defects in female APP/PS1 mice, and explore the underlying mechanisms. Six-month-old female APP/PS1 mice were administered PTA (20, 40 mg · kg-1 · d-1, i.g.) for 90 days. We first demonstrated that PTA bound to ERβ with a dissociation constant (KD) of 288.9 ± 35.14 nM in microscale thermophoresis. Then we showed that PTA administration dose-dependently ameliorated cognitive defects evaluated in Morris water maze and Y-maze testes. Furthermore, PTA administration reduced amyloid plaque deposition in the hippocampus by promoting microglial phagocytosis; PTA administration improved synaptic integrity through enhancing BDNF/TrkB/CREB signaling, ameliorated oxidative stress by Catalase level, and regulated Bcl-2 family proteins in the hippocampus. The therapeutic effects of PTA were also observed in vitro: PTA (5, 10, 20 μM) dose-dependently increased phagocytosis of o-FAM-Aβ42 in primary microglia and BV2 cells through enhancing ERβ/TLR4 signaling; PTA treatment ameliorated o-Aβ25-35-induced reduction of synapse-related proteins VAMP2 and PSD95 in primary neurons through enhancing ERβ/BDNF/TrkB/CREB pathways; PTA treatment alleviated o-Aβ25-35-induced oxidative stress in primary neurons through targeting ERβ and increasing Catalase expression. Together, this study has addressed the efficacy of selective ERβ agonist in the amelioration of AD and highlighted the potential of PTA as a drug lead compound against the disease.

Comparison of survival outcomes after CyberKnife® radiotherapy in Taiwan using preapproved insurance-based reimbursement versus out-of-pocket expenditure

BACKGROUND

With technological advances, radiotherapy has progressed from simple irradiation to robotic arm-based stereotactic radiosurgery systems (SRS, in this case, CyberKnife®). This equipment is high-priced and might be cost-effective or not. The National Health Insurance (NHI) in Taiwan has a premedical claims review process for approving CyberKnife® treatment; however, patients might have to pay for the procedure themselves if the NHI rejects the practice. Under the high treatment cost and such an insurance system, a sketch of patients treated by these high-cost machines and whether the prereview of insurance for reimbursement is reasonable without hindering the patient's right to undergo treatment should be investigated. In this study, the patients of CyberKnife® radiotherapy in our institute were investigated as an example for this purpose.

METHODS

Patients who underwent CyberKnife® radiotherapy in our department were investigated retrospectively. Their demographic characteristics, disease patterns, and treatment sites were analyzed. Survivals were compared according to clinical features, and treatment expenses were reimbursed after prereview or out-of-pocket.

RESULTS

From October 19, 2014, to January 30, 2018, there were 331 patients included in this study, 205 (55.3%) of whom underwent CyberKnife® radiotherapy at their own expense, while 166 (44.7%) had their expenses approved for reimbursement after prereview by NHI. Most patients were treated for metastatic tumors (37.5%), and the brain was the most frequent treatment site (46.1%). The 1-year overall survival was 67.1%, and the 2-year overall survival was 56.3% after CyberKinfe® radiotherapy. The best survival rate (96.8% at 1 year) was for patients with brain tumors. In patient's characteristics, A better Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, treatment for primary tumors, and outpatient treatment were independent factors for superior survival after CyberKnife® radiotherapy. The survivals for patients whose treatment expenses were approved for reimbursement after prereview by NHI were also better than out-of-pocket.

CONCLUSIONS

Besides the patients' characteristics, the treatment expense could be approved or rejected for reimbursement by the NHI prereview was an independent factor for survival in CyberKnife® radiotherapy. Prereview to reimburse expensive treatment is not an unreasonable requirement.

Analysis and Visualization of Research on Resilient Cities and Communities Based on VOSviewer

To objectively grasp the current situation and development trend of resilient cities or communities (RC) research. The articles in Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection databases from 1995 to 2022 were used as a sample, and bibliometrics was used to statistically analyze the year of publication and number of articles, highly cited documents and keyword hotness in this field. VOSviewer was used to explore the knowledge graph of RC research documents. The results show that: the development process is roughly divided into 3 periods: no attention (1995–2004), starting (2005–2014), and rapid growth (2015–2021). The journal “Sustainability” and “International journal of disaster risk reduction” are the key journals publishing RC research. Serre and Shaw are the most productive authors. The USA is still the leading country in this field of RC. Colorado State Univ, Texas a&m Univ, and Delft Univ Technol are the main research institutions. The keyword analysis indicates the hot topics in different periods. Moreover, several limitations and some recommendations for future research on RC are also given based on this.

Glycolytic and fatty acid oxidation genes affect the treatment and prognosis of liver cancer

BACKGROUND

Metabolic reprogramming is a feature of tumour cells and is essential to support their rapid proliferation. The glycolytic activity of liver cancer cells is significantly higher than that of normal liver cells, and the rapidly proliferating tumour cells are powered by aerobic glycolysis. Lipid metabolism reprogramming enables tumour cells to meet their needs for highly proliferative growth and is an important driving force for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

AIM

To explore the influence of different metabolic subtypes of HCC and analyse their significance in guiding prognosis and treatment based on the molecular mechanism of glycolysis and fatty acid oxidation (FAO).

METHODS

By downloading related data from public databases including the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), the Molecular Signatures Database, and International Cancer Genome Consortium, we utilised unsupervised consensus clustering to divide TCGA Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma samples into four metabolic subgroups and compared single nucleotide polymorphism, copy number variation, tumour microenvironment, and Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer and Tumour Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion between different metabolites. The differences and causes of survival and the clinical characteristics between them were analysed, and a prognostic model was established based on glycolysis and FAO genes. Combined with the clinical features, a Norman diagram was created to compare the pros and cons of each model.

RESULTS

In the four metabolic subgroups, with the increase in glycolytic expression, the median survival of patients showed the worst results, while FAO showed the best. When comparing the follow-up analysis of each group, we considered that the differences between them might be related to reactive oxygen species, somatic copy number variation of key genes, and immune microenvironment. It was also found that the FAO group and the low-risk group had better efficacy and response to immune checkpoint blockade treatment and anti-tumour drugs.

CONCLUSION

There are obvious differences in genes, chromosomes, and clinical characteristics between metabolic subgroups. The establishment of a prognostic model could predict patient prognosis and guide clinical treatment.

Krill oil prevents lipopolysaccharide-evoked acute liver injury in mice through inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation

Acute liver injury is a life-threatening syndrome that often results from the actions of viruses, drugs and toxins. Herein, the protective effect and potential mechanism of krill oil (KO), a novel natural product rich in long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids bound to phospholipids and astaxanthin, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-evoked acute liver injury in mice were investigated. Male C57BL/6J mice were administered intragastrically with 400 mg kg^-1 KO or fish oil (FO) once per day for 28 consecutive days prior to LPS exposure (10 mg kg^-1, intraperitoneally injected). The results revealed that KO pretreatment significantly ameliorated LPS-evoked hepatic dysfunction indicated by reduced serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities and attenuated hepatic histopathological damage. KO pretreatment also mitigated LPS-induced hepatic oxidative stress, as evidenced by decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, elevated glutathione (GSH) levels, and elevated catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. Additionally, LPS-evoked overproduction of pro-inflammatory mediators in serum and the liver was inhibited by KO pretreatment. Furthermore, KO pretreatment suppressed LPS-induced activation of the hepatic toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB)/NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) signaling pathway. Interestingly, the hepatoprotective effect of KO was superior to that of FO. Collectively, the current findings suggest that KO protects against LPS-evoked acute liver injury via inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation.

Using deep learning models to analyze the cerebral edema complication caused by radiotherapy in patients with intracranial tumor

Using deep learning models to analyze patients with intracranial tumors, to study the image segmentation and standard results by clinical depiction complications of cerebral edema after receiving radiotherapy. In this study, patients with intracranial tumors receiving computer knife (CyberKnife M6) stereotactic radiosurgery were followed using the treatment planning system (MultiPlan 5.1.3) to obtain before-treatment and four-month follow-up images of patients. The TensorFlow platform was used as the core architecture for training neural networks. Supervised learning was used to build labels for the cerebral edema dataset by using Mask region-based convolutional neural networks (R-CNN), and region growing algorithms. The three evaluation coefficients DICE, Jaccard (intersection over union, IoU), and volumetric overlap error (VOE) were used to analyze and calculate the algorithms in the image collection for cerebral edema image segmentation and the standard as described by the oncologists. When DICE and IoU indices were 1, and the VOE index was 0, the results were identical to those described by the clinician.The study found using the Mask R-CNN model in the segmentation of cerebral edema, the DICE index was 0.88, the IoU index was 0.79, and the VOE index was 2.0. The DICE, IoU, and VOE indices using region growing were 0.77, 0.64, and 3.2, respectively. Using the evaluated index, the Mask R-CNN model had the best segmentation effect. This method can be implemented in the clinical workflow in the future to achieve good complication segmentation and provide clinical evaluation and guidance suggestions.

Prevalence and correlates of post-traumatic stress disorder and its symptomatology in tornado-affected rural residents

Experiencing a serious natural disaster may place survivors at particularly high risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, very limited data are available on the prevalence and clinical characteristics of PTSD among survivors of a tornado disaster. The present study examined the prevalence of PTSD and correlates and clinical symptoms of possible PTSD in survivors 1.5 months after a tornado disaster. A total of 237 survivors were recruited and administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-V (SCID) to measure the prevalence of PTSD and the Essen Trauma Inventory (ETI) to measure the incidence of symptoms in each dimension. Survivors'demographic information and characteristics of exposure to the tornado were collected via self-report questionnaires. Thirty-two of the survey respondents were diagnosed with PTSD (13.6%, total =237). Correlates of PTSD in survivors were being female (OR=3.62, P = 0.023), living in an area severely affected by the tornado (OR = 3.94, P = 0.032), and having severe property damage (OR = 3.72, P = 0.010). Less common symptoms mainly focused on the avoidance dimension and included feeling alienated or distant from the people around oneself (21.90%), not being able to recall important parts of the event (28.10%), being emotionally numb (31.20%), and feeling like one's plans for the future and hopes will not come true (37.50%). In the sample of rural residents, nearly two-thirds of people with PTSD were not willing to seek psychological help; increasing the accessibility of mental health services and administering more active mental health services are necessary for this vulnerable population, whether or not they claim to need help.

Construction Safety during Pandemics: Learning from the Xinjia Express Hotel Collapse during COVID-19 in China

Many construction accidents occur in China each year, leading to a large number of deaths, injures, and property losses. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, little attention is paid to construction safety, resulting in severe accidents. To prevent construction accidents and learn to how address safety issues in future pandemics, this study proposed an improved STAMP (Systems Theoretic Accident Modeling and Processes) model to analyze the collapse accident of the Xinjia Express Hotel used for COVID-19 quarantine in China. Through the application of the STAMP approach, the causes of the construction accident and the relationship between various causal factors are analyzed from a systematic perspective. The identified causes are divided into five categories: contractors, management of organizations, technical methods, participants, and interactive feedback. Finally, safety recommendations are drawn from this study to improve construction safety and safety management in pandemics.

Novel model combining contrast-enhanced ultrasound with serology predicts hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after hepatectomy

BACKGROUND

Surgery is the primary curative option in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, recurrence within 2 years is observed in 30%–50% of patients, being a major cause of mortality.

AIM

To construct and verify a non-invasive prediction model combining contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) with serology biomarkers to predict the early recurrence of HCC.

METHODS

Records of 744 consecutive patients undergoing first-line curative surgery for HCC in one institution from 2016–2018 were reviewed, and 292 local patients were selected for analysis. General characteristics including gender and age, CEUS liver imaging reporting and data system (LIRADS) parameters including wash-in time, wash-in type, wash-out time, and wash-out type, and serology biomarkers including alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, platelets, and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) were collected. Univariate analysis and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model were used to evaluate the independent prognostic factors for tumor recurrence. Then a nomogram called CEUS model was constructed. The CEUS model was then used to predict recurrence at 6 mo, 12 mo, and 24 mo, the cut-off value was calculate by X-tile, and each C-index was calculated. Then Kaplan-Meier curve was compared by log-rank test. The calibration curves of each time were depicted.

RESULTS

A nomogram predicting early recurrence (ER), named CEUS model, was formulated based on the results of the multivariate Cox regression analysis. This nomogram incorporated tumor diameter, preoperative AFP level, and LIRADS, and the hazard ratio was 1.123 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.041-1.211), 1.547 (95%CI: 1.245-1.922), and 1.428 (95%CI: 1.059-1.925), respectively. The cut-off value at 6 mo, 12 mo, and 24 mo was 100, 80, and 50, and the C-index was 0.748 (95%CI: 0.683-0.813), 0.762 (95%CI: 0.704-0.820), and 0.762 (95%CI: 0.706-0.819), respectively. The model showed satisfactory results, and the calibration at 6 mo was desirable; however, the calibration at 12 and 24 mo should be improved.

CONCLUSION

The CEUS model enables the well-calibrated individualized prediction of ER before surgery and may represent a novel tool for biomarker research and individual counseling.

Effect of catechin and commercial preparation of green tea essence on the pharmacokinetics of l-dopa in rabbits

The aim of this study was to investigate drug interactions of L-dopa/carbidopa with catechin and green tea essence in rabbits following the simultaneous administration via an intramuscular injection of catechin or via an intragastric route for green tea essence with L-dopa/carbidopa. The results indicated that catechin at doses of 10, 20 and 50 mg/kg increased the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time zero to the time of the last quantifiable concentration (AUC_0-t ) of L-dopa by about 69, 78 and 42%, respectively. The metabolic ratios of the AUC_0-t for 3-O-methyldopa (3-OMD)/L-dopa significantly decreased by about 56, 68 and 76% (P < 0.05), respectively. In addition, a single dose of 5/1.25 mg/kg L-dopa/carbidopa was co-administrated with 150 mg/kg green tea essence via an intragastric route with an oral-gastric tube. Comparing the related pharmacokinetic parameters of L-dopa, the clearance and metabolic ratio of L-dopa decreased by 20 and 19% (P < 0.05), respectively. In conclusion, catechin and green tea essence can significantly affect the metabolism of L-dopa by the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) metabolic pathway. Catechin can enhance L-dopa bioavailability, and both catechin and green tea essence decreased 3-OMD formation. Therefore, catechin and green tea essence may increase L-dopa efficacy for Parkinson's disease treatment.

Pre-screening for osteoporosis with calcaneus quantitative ultrasound and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry bone density

Calcaneal quantitative ultrasonography (QUS) is a useful prescreening tool for osteoporosis, while the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the mainstream in clinical practice. We evaluated the correlation between QUS and DXA in a Taiwanese population. A total of 772 patients were enrolled and demographic data were recorded with the QUS and DXA T-score over the hip and spine. The correlation coefficient of QUS with the DXA-hip was 0.171. For DXA-spine, it was 0.135 overall, 0.237 in females, and 0.255 in males. The logistic regression model using DXA-spine as a dependent variable was established, and the classification table showed 66.2% accuracy. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses with Youden's Index revealed the optimal cut-off point of QUS for predicting osteoporosis to be 2.72. This study showed a meaningful correlation between QUS and DXA in a Taiwanese population. Thus, it is important to pre-screen for osteoporosis with calcaneus QUS.

Why MUC16 mutations lead to a better prognosis: A study based on The Cancer Genome Atlas gastric cancer cohort

BACKGROUND

MUC16, encoding cancer antigen 125, is a frequently mutated gene in gastric cancer. In addition, MUC16 mutations seem to result in a better prognosis in gastric cancer. However, the mechanisms that lead to a better prognosis by MUC16 mutations have not yet been clarified.

AIM

To delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms that explain why MUC16 mutations signal a better prognosis in gastric cancer.

METHODS

We used multi-omics data, including mRNA, simple nucleotide variation, copy number variation and methylation data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, to explore the relationship between MUC16 mutations and prognosis. Cox regression and random survival forest algorithms were applied to search for hub genes. Gene set enrichment analysis was used to elucidate the molecular mechanisms. Single-sample gene set enrichment analysis and “EpiDISH” were used to assess immune cells infiltration, and “ESTIMATE” for analysis of the tumor microenvironment.

RESULTS

Our study found that compared to the wild-type group, the mutation group had a better prognosis. Additional analysis indicated that the MUC16 mutations appear to activate the DNA repair and p53 pathways to act as an anti-tumor agent. We also identified a key gene, NPY1R (neuropeptide Y receptor Y1), which was significantly more highly expressed in the MUC16 mutations group than in the MUC16 wild-type group. The high expression of NPY1R predicted a poorer prognosis, which was also confirmed in a separate Gene Expression Omnibus cohort. Further susceptibility analysis revealed that NPY1R might be a potential drug target for gastric cancer. Furthermore, in the analysis of the tumor microenvironment, we found that immune cells in the mutation group exhibited higher anti-tumor effects. In addition, the tumor mutation burden and cancer stem cells index were also higher in the mutation group than in the wild-type group.

CONCLUSION

We speculated that the MUC16 mutations might activate the p53 pathway and DNA repair pathway: alternatively, the tumor microenvironment may be involved.

Additively manufactured biomedical Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr lattices with tunable Young's modulus: Mechanical property, biocompatibility, and proteomics analysis

Some β-Ti alloys, such as Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr (TNTZ) alloys, exhibit a low Young's modulus and excellent biocompatibility. These alloys are promising new generation biomedical implant materials. Selective laser melting (SLM) can further enable customer-specific manufacturing of β-Ti alloys to satisfy the ever-increasing need for enhanced biomedical products. In this study, we quantitatively determined the relationships between porosity, yield strength, and Young's modulus of SLM-prepared TNTZ lattices. The study constitutes a critical step toward understanding the behavior of the lattice and eventually enables tuning the Young's modulus to match that of human bones. Fatigue properties were also investigated on as-printed lattices in terms of the stress limit. The biocompatibility study included a routine evaluation of the relative cell growth rate and a proteomics analysis using a common mouse fibroblast cell line, L929. The results indicated that the as-printed TNTZ samples exhibited evidence of protein proliferation of the L929 cells, particularly P06733, and that those proteins are responsible for biological processes and molecular functions. They in turn may have promoted cell regeneration, cell motility, and protein binding, which at least partially explains the good biocompatibility of the as-printed TNTZ at the protein level. The study highlights the promising applications of additively manufactured TNTZ as a bone-replacing material from mechanical and biocompatibility perspectives.

[Evaluation of potential renal acid load for estimating the health effects of drinking water]

There is a lack of a reliable comprehensive evaluation indicator to access the health effects of drinking water. In recent years, scholars established an indicator to evaluate the comprehensive effect of drinking water on the body's acid-base balance. This indicator came from the potential renal acid load (PRAL) of food and named the potential renal acid load of drinking water. It included several typical anions and cations which are widely found in drinking water. This article reviewed the application, advantages, and disadvantages of PRAL in accessing the effect of drinking water on body acidbase metabolism.

Analysis of prognostic factors and clinical outcomes in uterine cervical carcinoma with isolated para-aortic lymph node recurrence

To evaluate clinical outcomes and to identify prognostic factors in isolated para-aortic lymph node (PALN) recurrence, we retrospectively reviewed 65 patients who developed PALN recurrence as the first site of tumor progression from a total of 1521 patients who were treated with curative pelvic radiation therapy (RT) for uterine cervical carcinoma between May 1993 and January 2017. Forty-five of the 65 patients received salvage therapy. The median salvage PALN radiation dose was 54 Gy (range: 18 to 62 Gy). Prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and distant metastases (DMs) were analyzed with univariate and multivariate Cox regression. The median follow-up period for surviving patients was 61 months (4-202 months). The median OS was 27.7 months (0.3-202 months). The highest level of PALN metastases at or above the L1 spinal level (hazard ratio [HR] 9.88, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.44-28.38, P<0.001) and the presence of leg edema and/or back pain at recurrence (HR 3.25, 95% CI 1.57-6.75, P=0.002) were significantly associated with worse OS. A significantly higher incidence of DMs (HR 5.97, 95% CI 2.05-17.35, P=0.001) was found in the patients with a high level (≥L1) of PALN metastases. Salvage RT (HR 0.35, 95% CI 0.17-0.71, P=0.004) and restaging with positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) (HR 0.2, 95% CI 0.04-0.93, P=0.039) were independent predictors of a better OS. In conclusion, a high level (≥L1) of PALN metastases predicts poor survival and a high rate of DMs. Periodic surveillance for early detection and restaging by PET/CT imaging to identify the optimal treatment at recurrence is recommended.

Effects of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus infection on tight junction protein gene expression and morphology of the intestinal mucosa in pigs

Tight junction proteins are important for the maintenance and repair of the intestinal mucosal barrier. The present study investigated relationships among tight junction protein gene expression, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) infection, and intestinal mucosal morphology in piglets. We compared the expression of six tight junction proteins (ZO-1, ZO-2, Occludin, Claudin-1, Claudin-4, and Claudin-5) between seven-day-old piglets infected with PEDV and normal piglets, as well as in PEDV-infected porcine intestinal epithelial cells (IPEC-J2). We also evaluated differences in mucosal morphology between PEDV-infected and normal piglets. The expression of six tight junction protein genes was lower in PEDV-infected piglets than in the normal animals. The expression of ZO-1, ZO-2, Occludin, and Claudin-4 in the intestine tissue was significantly lower (p⟨0.05) in PEDV-infected than in normal piglets. The expression of Claudin-5 in the jejunum was significantly lower in PEDV-infected piglets than in the normal animals (p⟨0.01). The expression of Claudin-1 and Claudin-5 genes in the ileum was significantly higher in PEDV-infected piglets than in normal piglets (p⟨0.01). Morphologically, the intestinal mucosa in PEDV-infected piglets exhibited clear pathological changes, including breakage and shedding of intestinal villi. In PEDV-infected IPEC-J2 cells, the mRNA expression of the six tight junction proteins showed a downward trend; in particular, the expression of the Occludin and Claudin-4 genes was significantly lower (p⟨0.01). These data suggest that the expression of these six tight junction proteins, especially Occludin and Claudin-4, plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier and resistance to PEDV infection in piglets.

Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: a Unique Association

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a rare disorder that is associated with lung or gynecological malignancies and Hodgkin lymphoma. Neurologic symptoms are commonly the initial presenting sign leading to the diagnosis of an underlying malignancy. We are presenting an Asian male with progressive lower extremity weakness with EBV-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and anti-Yo antibodies. Peculiarly, transient diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement is seen on MR imaging. This is the first report of PCD associated with NPC and thus illustrates that PCD embodies a boarder set of disease than previously described.

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor modulates stroke-induced astrogliosis and neurogenesis in the adult mouse brain

BACKGROUND

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-dependent transcription factor activated by environmental agonists and dietary tryptophan metabolites for the immune response and cell cycle regulation. Emerging evidence suggests that AHR activation after acute stroke may play a role in brain ischemic injury. However, whether AHR activation alters poststroke astrogliosis and neurogenesis remains unknown.

METHODS

We adopted conditional knockout of AHR from nestin-expressing neural stem/progenitor cells (AHRcKO) and wild-type (WT) mice in the permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. WT mice were treated with either vehicle or the AHR antagonist 6,2',4'-trimethoxyflavone (TMF, 5 mg/kg/day) intraperitoneally. The animals were examined at 2 and 7 days after MCAO.

RESULTS

The AHR signaling pathway was significantly upregulated after stroke. Both TMF-treated WT and AHRcKO mice showed significantly decreased infarct volume, improved sensorimotor, and nonspatial working memory functions compared with their respective controls. AHR immunoreactivities were increased predominantly in activated microglia and astrocytes after MCAO compared with the normal WT controls. The TMF-treated WT and AHRcKO mice demonstrated significant amelioration of astrogliosis and microgliosis. Interestingly, these mice also showed augmentation of neural progenitor cell proliferation at the ipsilesional neurogenic subventricular zone (SVZ) and the hippocampal subgranular zone. At the peri-infarct cortex, the ipsilesional SVZ/striatum, and the hippocampus, both the TMF-treated and AHRcKO mice demonstrated downregulated IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ, CXCL1, and S100β, and concomitantly upregulated Neurogenin 2 and Neurogenin 1.

CONCLUSION

Neural cell-specific AHR activation following acute ischemic stroke increased astrogliosis and suppressed neurogenesis in adult mice. AHR inhibition in acute stroke may potentially benefit functional outcomes likely through reducing proinflammatory gliosis and preserving neurogenesis.

[Association of maternal nocturnal sleep throughout pregnancy with the early nocturnal sleep of infants]

Objective: To investigate the association between maternal nocturnal sleep during pregnancy and their infants' nocturnal sleep patterns in early infancy by establishing a birth cohort. Methods: In this prospective study,healthy pregnant women and their infants were recruited in Chongqing Health Center for Women and Children from September 2013 to January 2014. A total of 40 healthy pregnant women and their infants were enrolled, and 34 pairs (85%) completed the whole survey. Actiwatch, wearing on the mother's wrist or infant's ankle,was used to monitor nighttime sleep at home for 7 times in total,with 7 consecutive days for each monitoring course. Pregnant women were monitored at 16, 24, 32 weeks gestational age, and were required to finish Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale at the end of each monitoring. Their infants were initially monitored at 14 days after birth, followed by 1(st), 2(nd), and 3(rd) month after birth,with sleep diary recorded by parents. Pearson correlation analysis and multivariate linear regression were used to investigate the potential correlation between these two sleep patterns. Results: The average nocturnal sleep time was (465±53) min throughout pregnancy, with increased trend in the latency of maternal nighttime sleep onset ((30±15), (34±29), (38±30) min) while decreasing of average sleep efficiency ((85±5)%, (84±8)%, (83±8)%). The longest night sleep duration decreased from (382±74) min in the first trimester to (330±83) min in the third trimester (F=4.932, P<0.05), while awakening time after sleep onset (WASO) correspondingly increased from (27±22) min to (53±25) min (F=12.605, P<0.05). In terms of infants, the latency of nighttime sleep onset decreased from (43±33) min on the 14th day to (20±29) min at 3-month of age (t=3.281, P=0.002), while the longest nighttime sleep duration increased from (20±62) min to (265±140) min (t=3.867, P<0.01); meanwhile, the total nocturnal sleep time and the sleep efficiency increased from (373±126) min and (63±28)% to (431±103) min and (75±16)%, respectively (t=2.362, P=0.024; t=2.418, P=0.039, respectively). After adjusting for maternal age and body mass index (BMI), parental educational level and family income, maternal mood, exposure to tobacco and alcohol during pregnancy, method of delivery, as well as infants' gender, feeding patterns and gestational weeks, the regression analysis showed that the total nocturnal sleep time and the longest nighttime sleep duration during pregnancy were positively correlated with the corresponding parameters of their infants at the age of 3 months (B=0.541, 95%CI 0.168-0.914, t=2.882, P=0.005; B=0.310, 95%CI 0.035-0.586, t=2.240, P=0.027, respectively). Conclusions: The total nocturnal sleep time and the longest nighttime sleep duration during pregnancy are positively correlated with the corresponding parameters of their infants in early infancy. Paying more attention to improve maternal sleep quality may facilitate their infants to establish sleep-wake patterns early.

Crystalline characteristics of annealed AlN films by pulsed laser treatment for solidly mounted resonator applications

AlN films were deposited on Si substrates using a reactive RF magnetron sputtering process and then the films were annealed by using different laser powers and wavelengths (355 nm, 532 nm and 1064 nm). For all three laser systems, the (002) peak intensity was obviously improved following laser irradiation. The improvement in the crystalline property was particularly obtained in the AlN film processed at 355 nm. In particular, given the use of the optimal laser power (0.025 W), the (002) peak intensity was 58.7% higher than that of the as-deposited film. The resonant frequency and 3 dB bandwidth of a SMR filter with an unprocessed AlN film were found to be 2850 MHz and 227.81 MHz, respectively. Following laser treatment with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a power of 0.25 W, the resonant frequency changed from 2850 to 2858 MHz. Moreover, 3 dB bandwidth changed from 227.81 to 202.49 MHz and the return loss of the filter reduced from 17.28 to 16.48 dB. Overall, the results thus show that the frequency response of the SMR filter can be adjusted and the return loss reduced by means of laser treatment with an appropriate wavelength.

[Seasonal distribution of patient hospitalization due to asthma exacerbation in 7 geographic areas in China]

Objective: To understand the seasonal distribution of patient hospitalization due to asthma exacerbation in 7 geographic areas in China. Methods: This was a retrospective study which involved patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in 29 hospitals throughout 7 geographic areas in the mainland of China (northeast, north, central, east, south, northwest and southwest). The numbers of asthmatic patients and total inpatients of the respiratory department of each hospital were recorded. The monthly ratio of asthmatic patients to the total inpatients in every area was calculated and compared. Results: During the study period, 6 480 patients were admitted for asthma exacerbation, accounting for 3.14% of all the 206 135 patients admitted to the respiratory departments in the 29 hospitals. The ratio of asthmatic patients to total inpatients in the northeast area (5.61%) was highest, and the ratio in east area was lowest (1.97%). Statistical analysis showed that the difference among different areas was significant (P<0.000 1). In most areas, both the number and proportion of hospitalized asthmatic patients peaked in spring (February-April) and autumn (September-October). In the northeast area, east area and south area, the peaks in spring were more obvious, while in the north area and southwest area, the peaks in autumn were more obvious. In the northwest area the peaks occurred in winter (December-January) and summer (June-August), respectively. The differences in hospitalization due to asthma among different months were significant in the northeast, north, and southwest areas (P<0.005). Conclusion: The number of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation fluctuated with season in different areas in China. In most areas, more asthmatic patients were admitted to hospitals in spring and autumn.

Objective: To study the seasonal characteristics of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in China. Methods: This was a retrospective study which involved patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in 29 hospitals throughout mainland China during 2013-2014. The number of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in each hospital was calculated, as well as the ratio of asthmatic patients to all the hospitalized patients. The analysis by month was conducted. The number and ratio of asthmatic patients in the northern and southern cities were calculated respectively. Results: During the study period, there were 6 480 patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation, accounting for 3.14% (6 480/206 135) of all the hospitalized patients of the respiratory department in 29 hospitals. The analysis by month showed that the ratio of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation was highest in March (3.49%), then declined from April to June, then rose again from July, reaching a second peak at September (3.28%), and then declined again from October to December. The ratio of asthmatic patients in every month was higher in northern cities than in southern cities. Conclusions: The ratio of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in China fluctuates with the changes of seasons, and March and September are the two peak months. Northern cities have a higher ratio of asthmatic patients than southern cities.

[Warning symptoms of asthma attack and asthma self-management: a national asthma control survey from China]

Objective: To investigate warning symptoms of asthma attack and evaluate asthma self-management status of asthma patients in urban China. Methods: A multi-center, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey was carried out from 30 general hospitals dispersed in 30 provinces of mainland China (except for Tibet) during Oct 2015 to May 2016. Information of frequency and warning symptoms of asthma attack, the time from warning symptoms to asthma attack, the impact of asthma attack and asthma self-management were collected from asthma patients of outpatient department. Results: Altogether 3 875 asthmatic outpatients were recruited. 78.1% (3 026/3 875) of the patients reported restriction of exercise and daily activities during asthma exacerbation. 82.5% (3 160/3 829) of the patients had warning symptoms before asthma attack, the most common warning symptoms were cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath. The median time from warning symptoms to asthma attack was 2 h, the mean time was 90 h. Only 4.4% (167/3 829) of the patients had definite confidence to control asthma when symptoms deteriorated. 76.7% (2 937/3 828) of the patients used medications to control asthma when asthma symptoms deteriorated. Medication choice: inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) + formoterol 45.8% (1 776/3 875), short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) 23.9% (927/3 875). Conclusions: Most asthma patients have warning symptoms before asthma attack, the most common symptoms are cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath. The proportion of patients conducting effective asthma self-management remains low.

EDACO, a derivative of myricetin, inhibits the differentiation of Gaoyou duck embryonic osteoclasts in vitro

1. This study determined the effects of (E)-3-(2-(4-(3-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)acryloyl)phenoxy)ethoxy)-5,7-dimethoxy-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-4H-chromen-4-one (EDACO) on the differentiation of Gaoyou duck embryonic osteoclasts cultured in vitro. 2. Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM-MNC) were collected from 23-d-old Gaoyou duck embryos and induced by macrophage colony-stimulating factor and receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand in the presence of EDACO at different concentrations (i.e. 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 µM). Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining and resorption ability determination were conducted. 3. Results suggested that EDACO suppressed the shaping of positive multinucleated cells and the number of TRAP-positive cells in the 20, 40, 80 and 160 μM EDACO groups was significantly decreased (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Besides, the absorption activity of differentiated duck embryonic osteoclasts was significantly inhibited (P < 0.05) in both 80 and 160 μM EDACO groups. 4. Overall, EDACO can inhibit the differentiation of BM-MNC into mature osteoclasts in duck embryos.1.

[The level of asthma control in China from a national asthma control survey]

Objective: To assess the overall asthma control level in urban China. Methods: A multi-center, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey was carried out in 30 provinces in China (except Tibet). Asthmatic outpatients who met the inclusion criteria were recruited consecutively from 30 sub-centers from October 2015 to May 2016. Data of demographic characteristics, asthma control, asthma management, asthma exacerbations and self-management, and disease perception were collected by face-to-face interviews. Results: Totally 3 875 asthmatic outpatients were recruited. Asthma control level was assessed according to GINA 2015. The prevalence of asthma control was 28.5%(1 099/3 854). Among 10 cities, which were also involved in the asthma control survey in 2008, the level of asthma control improved from 28.7% in 2008 to 39.2%(533/1 361) in 2016. The rate of hospitalizations due to asthma exacerbations was 26.4%(1 017/3 858) and the rate of emergency visits was 22.4%(864/3 858). Among adult patients, 18.4%(568/3 092) of them had been absent from work while 63.6%(63/99) adolescent patients had been absent from school because of asthma attacks in the previous year. Conclusion: Although the level of asthma control in China is still far from ideal at present, the status has been improved in some cities. Poorly controlled asthma resulted in increase of hospitalizations, emergency department visits and work/school absences.

[A multi-center retrospective study of clinical characteristics and hospitalization costs of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in China during 2013-2014]

Objective: To study the characteristics of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in 29 teaching hospitals in China and to evaluate the hospitalization costs of these patients. Methods: This was a retrospective study and involved patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in 29 hospitals throughout China during 2013-2014. Information about the demographic features, conditions before the admission, the outcome, the complications, and the costs was collected using the pre-designed case report form. The influencing factors of the hospitalization costs were analyzed. Results: 3 240 asthmatic patients (1 369 males and 1 871 females) were included and data were analyzed. There were 41.5% (1 346/3 240) patients who had a history of previous hospitalization or emergency department visits during the last year. Only 28.0% (907/3 240) patients had used asthma-controlling medications regularly before the admission. Seventy-three(2.3%) patients were admitted to ICU and used mechanical ventilation. Mortality among these patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation was 0.25% (8/3 240). The median hospitalization costs was 9 045(6 431, 13 035) RMB. The costs of medications, examinations and treatment accounted for 52.1%, 27.6%, and 9.6% respectively. The costs of asthma medications accounted for only 22.7% of the total medication costs, while the costs of antibiotics accounted for 44.0%. The patients who were admitted to ICU, used mechanical ventilation, complicated with pneumonia, or had a history of hospitalization or emergency department visits during the last year due to asthma exacerbations tended to cost more. Conclusion: In this study, we demonstrated that only a minority of the patients had used asthma controllers regularly before the admissions with exacerbations. The in-hospital mortality of asthma patients in this study was much lower than that reported in other countries. The average cost of hospitalization was much higher than the yearly cost of maintenance therapy. Medication was the predominant component of the total hospitalization costs, and the costs of antibiotics made up the major part of the total medication costs.

[Course and prognosis analysis of intratympanic dexamethasone in the treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss]

Objective:To compare the recovery of different times of intratympanic dexamethasone in the treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss(SSNHL) and investigate the related prognostic factors. Method: Ninety patients with SSNHL were randomly divided into group A(3 times, every 2 days) and group B(5 times, every 2 days) according to the times of intratympanic dexamethasone. All patients were treated with blood flow promoting agents and neural nutrients. After 2 weeks of treatment, the recovery was compared. Based on treatment outcomes, patients were divided into two groups: recovery and no recovery, we evaluated the possible prognostic factors. Result:In the group A, the threshold improvement was(20.2±16.7) dB HL and the overall recovery rate was 78.7%(complete recovery rate, marked recovery rate and recovery rate were 17.0%, 21.3% and 40.4%, respectively), in the group B, the threshold improvement was(20.4±17.4) dB HL and the overall recovery rate was 81.4%, the complete recovery rate, marked recovery rate and recovery rate were 20.9%, 32.6% and 27.9%, respectively, the differences of recovery variables between the 2 groups were not statistically significant. After 2 weeks of treatment, 71 patients got overall recovery(78.9%), 19 patients(21.1%) resulted in no recovery, Interval between onset of symptoms and therapy of recovery group was shorter than that in no recovery group ［(5.6±3.6）days vs. （7.7±4.0）days, P<0.05］, the presence rate of vertigo in recovery group was lower than that in no recovery(14.1% vs. 68.4%, P<0.01). Gender, ear side, age, concurrence of tinnitus, initial hearing threshold, times of intratympanic dexamethasone and audiogram have no influence on the prognosis of SSNHL. Conclusion:SSNHL patients treated with 3 times and 5 times of intratympanic dexamethasone got similar results. Earlier treatment and absence of vertigo lead to favorable hearing results.

A network pharmacology-based study on the anti-hepatoma effect of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae

BACKGROUND

Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (RSM), a well-known traditional Chinese medicine, has been shown to inhibit tumorigenesis in various human cancers. However, the anticancer effects of RSM on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and the underlying mechanisms of action remain to be fully elucidated.

METHODS

In this study, we aimed to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms of RSM in the treatment of HCC using a network pharmacology approach. In vivo and in vitro experiments were also performed to validate the therapeutic effects of RSM on HCC.

RESULTS

In total, 62 active compounds from RSM and 72 HCC-related targets were identified through network pharmacological analysis. RSM was found to play a critical role in HCC via multiple targets and pathways, especially the EGFR and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways. In addition, RSM was found to suppress HCC cell proliferation, and impair cancer cell migration and invasion in vitro. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that RSM induced cell cycle G2/M arrest and apoptosis, and western blot analysis showed that RSM up-regulated the expression of BAX and down-regulated the expression of Bcl-2 in MHCC97-H and HepG2 cells. Furthermore, RSM administration down-regulated the expression of EGFR, PI3K, and p-AKT proteins, whereas the total AKT level was not altered. Finally, the results of our in vivo experiments confirmed the therapeutic effects of RSM on HCC in nude mice.

CONCLUSIONS

We provide an integrative network pharmacology approach, in combination with in vitro and in vivo experiments, to illustrate the underlying therapeutic mechanisms of RSM action on HCC.

Systems pharmacology-based investigation of Sanwei Ganjiang Prescription: related mechanisms in liver injury

Liver injury remains a significant global health problem and has a variety of causes, including oxidative stress (OS), inflammation, and apoptosis of liver cells. There is currently no curative therapy for this disorder. Sanwei Ganjiang Prescription (SWGJP), derived from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has shown its effectiveness in long-term liver damage therapy, although the underlying molecular mechanisms are still not fully understood. To explore the underlining mechanisms of action for SWGJP in liver injury from a holistic view, in the present study, a systems pharmacology approach was developed, which involved drug target identification and multilevel data integration analysis. Using a comprehensive systems approach, we identified 43 candidate compounds in SWGJP and 408 corresponding potential targets. We further deciphered the mechanisms of SWGJP in treating liver injury, including compound-target network analysis, target-function network analysis, and integrated pathways analysis. We deduced that SWGJP may protect hepatocytes through several functional modules involved in liver injury integrated-pathway, such as Nrf2-dependent anti-oxidative stress module. Notably, systems pharmacology provides an alternative way to investigate the complex action mode of TCM.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer of Spermidine and the Exploration of Its Molecular Recognition Properties

Spermidine is a functional ingredient that can extend the lifespan of many foods and indicate meat safety. However, its synthesis and enrichment is expensive and complex. To develop an effective separation material that can offer highly selective recognition of spermidine, we first applied non-covalent molecular imprinting technology using methacrylic acid as a functional monomer, azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross-linker. The adsorption properties of the polymers were analyzed using the Scatchard equation, the Lagergren kinetic equation, and the static distribution coefficient. The optimal polymerization molar ratio of the template molecule spermidine to the functional monomer was 1:4, the maximum adsorption amount was 97.75 μmol/g, and the adsorption equilibrium time was 300 min. The selective experiment showed that the interfering substances tyramine and histamine had selectivity factor α values of 2.01 and 1.78, respectively, indicating that the prepared polymer had good spermidine recognition ability. The density function theory calculations showed that the hydrogen bond strength, steric effect, and product energy caused adsorption and separation differences among the different imprinted polymer complexes.

[A retrospective study of the treatment of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in China]

Objective: To study the treatment of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in China. Methods: This was a retrospective study and involved patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in 29 hospitals throughout China during Jan 2013 to Dec 2014. Information of the demographic features, the severity of the exacerbation, the medicine prescribed during the hospitalization and the use of mechanical ventilation were collected and analyzed. Results: During the study period, there were 3 240 patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation, and 1 369(42.3%) of them were males 1 871(57.7%)were females. Patients of mild, moderate, severe, and life-threatening exacerbation counted for 41.7%, 37.8%, 19.2% and 1.0%, respectively of the total patients. Of all the patients, 72.6% used bronchodilators by nebulizer, 70.8% used inhaled corticosteroids by nebulizer, 60.5% used intravenous corticosteroids, 17.3% used oral corticosteroids, and 80.5% used antibiotics. The percentages of patients using systemic corticosteroids and antibiotics were higher in patients with more severe exacerbation. In patients with mild exacerbation, there were 74.9% and 52.2% who used antibiotics and systemic corticosteroids, respectively. A total of 73 patients (2.3%) used mechanical ventilation, and 62 of them used noninvasive ventilation, 16 used invasive ventilation, and 5 used both. Conclusions: Nebulizer therapy has been accepted as the main administration route of medicine in the treatment of asthma exacerbation. A large amount of patients used antibiotics and systemic corticosteroids during hospitalization, indicating there may be some overuse of these medicines.

[Evaluation of asthma disease perception from China national asthma control survey]

Objective: In order to evaluate disease perception of asthma patients in urban China and provide evidence for further specific patient education. Methods: A multi-center, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey was carried out in 30 general hospitals dispersed in 30 provinces of mainland China (except for Tibet) during Oct 2015 to May 2016. Information of disease perception [Question 1: the disease nature of asthma; Question 2: medication choice of first-line in chronic asthma; Question 3: the occasion of using short-acting aerosols of receptor agonists; Question 4: perception of asthma treatment goal; Question 5: reason for not using peak flow meter (PFM)] were collected from asthma patients of outpatient department. These results were compared with the same type of survey results from 2007-2008. Results: Altogether 3 875 asthmatic outpatients were recruited. 69.0% (2 660/3 857) of the patients had right perception on the disease nature of asthma, 60.2% (2 321/3 857) of the patients considered inhaled corticosteroids (ICS)/inhaled corticosteroids plus long-acting beta2-agonists (ICS+ LABA) as daily-used first-line medication for chronic asthma. 85.7% (3 277/3 823) of the patients had right perception on the condition of using short-acting beta2-agonists (SABA). 75.4% (2 761/3 661) of the patients had right perception on asthma treatment goal. Only 10.1% (388/3 837) of the patients used PFM. Of the reasons for not using PFM, 65.2% (2 518/3 860) of the patients chose doctors never introduced. Among the 10 cities, which were also involved in the asthma control survey in 2007-2008, 71.1% (968/1 361) of the patients had right perception on the disease nature of asthma, 61.6% (839/1 362) of the patients considered ICS/ICS+ LABA as daily-used first-line medication for chronic asthma. 88.7% (1 207/1 361) of the patients had right perception on the condition of using SABA. 74.5% (1 013/1 360) of the patients had right perception on asthma treatment goal. 17.9% (244/1 360) of the patients used PFM. Of the reasons for not using PFM, 76.2% (931/1 221) of the patients chose doctors never introduced. Compared to the survey conducted in 2007-2008, the perception on disease nature and medication choice as daily-used first-line medication for chronic asthma significantly improved, the perception on occasion of using SABA and asthma treatment goal was comparable, while the rate of PFM usage showed no significant improvement. In reasons of not using PFM, doctors never introduced ranked the first. Conclusions: Compared to the similar survey conducted in 2007-2008, the overall status of disease perception of asthma patients has been improved in urban China, while the rate of PFM usage showed no significant improvement. Asthma education on asthma and asthma self-management should be further pushed forward.

[A retrospective study of the mortality and death-related risk factors of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in Chinese urban areas]

Objective: To study the mortality and death-related risk factors of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation in Chinese urban areas. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out in 29 hospitals of 29 provinces throughout mainland China. Patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation during 2013-2014 in each hospital were included. For each patient, information about demography, admission time, comorbidities, severity of diseases, intense care unit (ICU) admission, use of mechanical ventilation and the outcome was obtained. The mortality of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation was calculated, and the basic information and causes of death of the patients who died were summarized. The death-related risk factors and numbers of comorbidities were compared between the patients who survived and those who died during hospitalization. Results: A total of 3 240 patients (median age 57.0) were included and among them 8 patients (median age 68.5) died. The mortality of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation was 0.25%. All the patients who died were admitted during the winter and spring. One patient died of acute myocardial infarction, one of cardiac shock, one of tension pneumothorax, one of sudden death, one of respiratory failure and three of unknown causes. The average number of comorbidities of patients who died was 1.10, larger than that of patients who survived (0.83) (P>0.05). More patients had diabetes, coronary artery diseases and hypertension as comorbidities in the patients who died (2/8) than those who survived[7.6% (246/3 232), 7.6% (246/3 232), 22.6% (731/3 232), respectively](all P>0.05). Conclusions: The in-hospital mortality of patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation of China in this study is low. The patients who died are much older, and with more comorbidities, and a higher percentage of comorbidities such as diabetes, coronary artery diseases, and hypertension.

Blood flow index as an indicator of successful sciatic nerve block: a prospective observational study using laser speckle contrast imaging

BACKGROUND

Laser speckle contrast imaging allows real-time, non-invasive, quantitative measurements of regional blood flow. The objectives of this prospective observational study were to use laser speckle contrast imaging to evaluate blood flow changes after sciatic nerve block, and to determine whether this novel optical technique can evaluate block success.

METHODS

This observational study included 63 adult patients undergoing elective lower limb surgery with sciatic nerve block. Blood flow images and blood flow index (BFI) values of toes were recorded using laser speckle contrast imaging 5 min before nerve block and at 5 min intervals until 30 min after sciatic block. The sensitivity, specificity, and cut-off value of laser speckle contrast imaging for predicting successful sciatic block were determined by receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

RESULTS

The BFI values of toes were significantly increased at each time point after successful sciatic block, compared with the baseline value obtained 5 min before nerve block; in failed sciatic block, there were no significant differences. For successful sciatic block, the highest increase of BFI value was at the big toe. BFI increase of the big toe at 10 min after sciatic block has great potential as an indicator of block success. The area under the ROC curve was 0.954 at a cut-off value of 8.48 perfusion units (PU) with a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 100%.

CONCLUSIONS

Laser speckle contrast imaging might be an early, objective, quantitative, and reliable indicator of successful sciatic block. BFI increase of the big toe not reaching 8.48 PU within 10 min after sciatic block indicates block failure.

Comparison of Skull Motions in Six Degrees of Freedom Between Two Head Supports During Frameless Radiosurgery by CyberKnife

Introduction: Maintaining immobilization to minimize skull motion is important during frameless radiosurgery. This study aimed to compare the intrafractional skull motions between two head supports.

Methods: With 6D skull tracking system, 4,075 image records from 45 patients receiving radiosurgery by CyberKnife were obtained. Twenty-three patients used TIMO head supports (CIVCO) (Group A) and twenty-two patients used Silverman head supports (CIVCO) with MoldCare cushions (ALCARE) (Group B). The skull motions in X (superior-inferior), Y (right-left), Z (anterior-posterior) axes, 3D (three-dimensional) vector, Roll, Pitch and Yaw between the two groups were compared and the margins of planning target volume were estimated.

Results: The translational motions in Group A were similar in three axes at initial but became different after 10 min, and those in Group B were less prominent in the Y axis. The rotational errors in Group A were most obvious in Yaw, but those in Group B were stationary in three axes. The motions in the X axis, 3D vector, Pitch and Yaw in Group B were significantly smaller than those in Group A; conversely, the motions in the Z axis in Group B were larger. To cover the 95% confidence intervals, margins of 0.77, 0.79, and 0.40 mm in the X, Y, and Z axes, respectively, were needed in Group A, and 0.69, 0.50, and 0.51 mm were needed in Group B.

Conclusions: Both head supports could provide good immobilization during the frameless radiosurgery. Silverman head support with MoldCare cushion was better than TIMO head support in the superior-inferior direction, 3D vector, Pitch and Yaw axes, but worse in the anterior-posterior direction.
