Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy and practicality of the Jaundice color card (JCard) as a screening tool for neonatal jaundice. Methods: Following the standards for reporting of diagnostic accuracy studies (STARD) statement, a multicenter prospective study was conducted in 9 hospitals in China from October 2019 to September 2021. A total of 845 newborns who were admitted to the hospital or outpatient department for liver function testing due to their own diseases. The inclusion criteria were a gestational age of ≥35 weeks, a birth weight of ≥2 000 g, and an age of ≤28 days. The neonate's parents used the JCard to measure jaundice at the neonate's cheek. Within 2 hours of the JCard measurement, transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) was measured with a JH20-1B device and total serum bilirubin (TSB) was detected. The Pearson's correlation analysis, Bland-Altman plots and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used for statistic analysis. Results: Out of the 854 newborns, 445 were male and 409 were female; 46 were born at 35-36 weeks of gestational age and 808 were born at ≥37 weeks of gestational age. Additionally, 432 cases were aged 0-3 days, 236 cases were aged 4-7 days, and 186 cases were aged 8-28 days. The TSB level was (227.4±89.6) μmol/L, with a range of 23.7-717.0 μmol/L. The JCard level was (221.4±77.0) μmol/L and the TcB level was (252.5±76.0) μmol/L. Both the JCard and TcB values showed good correlation (r=0.77 and 0.80, respectively) and agreements (96.0% (820/854) and 95.2% (813/854) of samples fell within the 95% limits of agreement, respectively) with TSB. The JCard value of 12 had a sensitivity of 0.93 and specificity of 0.75 for identifying a TSB ≥205.2 μmol/L, and a sensitivity of 1.00 and specificity of 0.35 for identifying a TSB ≥342.0 μmol/L. The TcB value of 205.2 μmol/L had a sensitivity of 0.97 and specificity of 0.60 for identifying TSB levels of 205.2 μmol/L, and a sensitivity of 1.00 and specificity of 0.26 for identifying TSB levels of 342.0 μmol/L. The areas under the ROC curve (AUC) of JCard for identifying TSB levels of 153.9, 205.2, 256.5, and 342.0 μmol/L were 0.96, 0.92, 0.83, and 0.83, respectively. The AUC of TcB were 0.94, 0.91, 0.86, and 0.87, respectively. There were both no significant differences between the AUC of JCard and TcB in identifying TSB levels of 153.9 and 205.2 μmol/L (both P>0.05). However, the AUC of JCard were both lower than those of TcB in identifying TSB levels of 256.5 and 342.0 μmol/L (both P<0.05). Conclusion: JCard can be used to classify different levels of bilirubin, but its diagnostic efficacy decreases with increasing bilirubin levels. When TSB level are ≤205.2 μmol/L, its diagnostic efficacy is equivalent to that of the JH20-1B. To prevent the misdiagnosis of severe jaundice, it is recommended that parents use a low JCard score, such as 12, to identify severe hyperbilirubinemia (TSB ≥342.0 μmol/L).

Abstract
NiFe2O4 material is grown on carbon paper (CP) with the hydrothermal method for use as electrocatalysts in an alkaline electrolyzer. NiFe2O4 material is used as the anode and cathode catalysts (named NiFe(+)/NiFe(-) hereafter). The results are compared with those obtained using CP/NiFe as the anode and CP/Ru as the cathode (named NiFe)(+)/Ru(-) hereafter). During cell operation with NiFe(+)/Ru(-), the current density reaches 500 mA/cm2 at a cell voltage of 1.79 V, with a specific energy consumption of 4.9 kWh/m3 and an energy efficiency of 66.2%. In comparison, for NiFe(+)/NiFe(-), the current density reaches 500 mA/cm2 at a cell voltage of 2.23 V, with a specific energy consumption of 5.7 kWh/m3 and an energy efficiency of 56.6%. The Faradaic efficiency is 96-99%. With the current density fixed at 400 mA/cm2, after performing a test for 150 h, the cell voltage with NiFe(+)/Ru(-) increases by 0.167 V, whereas that with NiFe(+)/NiFe(-) decreases by only 0.010 V. Good, long-term stability is demonstrated.

Acetylation-Mimic Mutation of TRIM28-Lys304 to Gln Attenuates the Interaction with KRAB-Zinc-Finger Proteins and Affects Gene Expression in Leukemic K562 Cells. Int J Mol Sci 2023; 24:9830. Abstract
TRIM28/KAP1/TIF1β is a crucial epigenetic modifier. Genetic ablation of trim28 is embryonic lethal, although RNAi-mediated knockdown in somatic cells yields viable cells. Reduction in TRIM28 abundance at the cellular or organismal level results in polyphenism. Posttranslational modifications such as phosphorylation and sumoylation have been shown to regulate TRIM28 activity. Moreover, several lysine residues of TRIM28 are subject to acetylation, but how acetylation of TRIM28 affects its functions remains poorly understood. Here, we report that, compared with wild-type TRIM28, the acetylation-mimic mutant TRIM28-K304Q has an altered interaction with Krüppel-associated box zinc-finger proteins (KRAB-ZNFs). The TRIM28-K304Q knock-in cells were created in K562 erythroleukemia cells by CRISPR-Cas9 (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated protein nuclease 9) gene editing method. Transcriptome analysis revealed that TRIM28-K304Q and TRIM28 knockout K562 cells had similar global gene expression profiles, yet the profiles differed considerably from wild-type K562 cells. The expression levels of embryonic-related globin gene and a platelet cell marker integrin-beta 3 were increased in TRIM28-K304Q mutant cells, indicating the induction of differentiation. In addition to the differentiation-related genes, many zinc-finger-proteins genes and imprinting genes were activated in TRIM28-K304Q cells; they were inhibited by wild-type TRIM28 via binding with KRAB-ZNFs. These results suggest that acetylation/deacetylation of K304 in TRIM28 constitutes a switch for regulating its interaction with KRAB-ZNFs and alters the gene regulation as demonstrated by the acetylation mimic TRIM28-K304Q.

Abstract
Weyl semimetals host chiral fermions with distinct chiralities and spin textures. Optical excitations involving those chiral fermions can induce exotic carrier responses, and in turn lead to novel optical phenomena. Here, we discover strong coherent terahertz emission from Weyl semimetal TaAs, which is demonstrated as a unique broadband source of the chiral terahertz wave. The polarization control of the THz emission is achieved by tuning photoexcitation of ultrafast photocurrents via the photogalvanic effect. In the near-infrared regime, the photon-energy dependent nonthermal current due to the predominant circular photogalvanic effect can be attributed to the radical change of the band velocities when the chiral Weyl fermions are excited during selective optical transitions between the tilted anisotropic Weyl cones and the massive bulk bands. Our findings provide a design concept for creating chiral photon sources using quantum materials and open up new opportunities for developing ultrafast opto-electronics using Weyl physics.

Abstract
Cwc23 is a member of the J protein family, and has been shown to interact with Ntr1, a scaffold protein that interacts with Ntr2 and Prp43 to form the NTR complex that mediates spliceosome disassembly. We show that Cwc23 is also an intrinsic component of the NTR complex, and that it interacts with the carboxyl terminus of Ntr1. Metabolic depletion of Cwc23 concurrently depleted Ntr1 and Ntr2, suggesting a role for Cwc23 in stabilizing these two proteins. Ntr1, Ntr2 and Cwc23 are stoichiometrically balanced, and form a stable heterotrimer. Depletion of Cwc23 from splicing extracts using antibodies resulted in depletion of all three proteins and accumulation of intron-lariat in the splicing reaction. Cwc23 is not required for disassembly of intron-lariat spliceosome (ILS), but facilitates disassembly of spliceosome intermediates after the actions of Prp2 and Prp16 by stabilizing the association of Ntr1 with the spliceosome. Cwc23 has a more limited effect on the association of Ntr1 with the ILS. Our data suggest that Cwc23 is important for maintaining the levels of Ntr1 and Ntr2, and that it also plays a regulatory role in targeting spliceosome intermediates for disassembly.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the expression of endothelial protein C receptor(EPCR)and its roles in plasma and placenta of patients with early onset severe preeclampsia. Methods: Sixty cases of severe preeclampsia women who delivered in Xuzhou Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital from March 2014 to February 2016, were recruited, which included 30 cases with early onset severe preeclampsia(early onset group, gestational week <34 weeks)and 30 patients with late onset severe preeclampsia(late onset group, gestational week ≥34 weeks). Thirty cases of healthy late pregnant women at the same period(gestational week ≥34 weeks)were selected as control group. Immunohistochemistry SP method was applied to detect the expression of in EPCR placenta. Reverse transcription(RT)- PCR was used to detect the expression of EPCR mRNA in placenta. ELISA method was used to detect the levels of soluble EPCR(sEPCR)level in plasma of the pregnant women of the three groups. Results: The expression of EPCR in placenta mainly distributed in the membrane and cytoplasm of placental syncytiotrophoblasts and vascular endothelial cells, a few in the cell nucleus. The expression of EPCR in early onset group(57%, 17/30)was significantly lower than that in late onset group(93%, 28/30; χ2=25.165, P=0.001). The expression of EPCR in late onset group had no significant difference from that in control group(97%, 29/30; χ2=0.540, P= 0.910). The expression of EPCR mRNA in placenta of early onset group(0.40±0.07)was significantly lower than that in late onset group(0.91±0.06; t=-30.044, P=0.001), while there was no statistical difference of the expression of EPCR mRNA between the late onset group and the control group(0.92±0.07; t=-0.631, P=0.538). Plasma sEPCR level in early onset group, late onset group and control group were(231 ± 11),(124±6)and(121±4)μg/L respectively, which is higher in early onset group than that in late onset group(t=48.080, P=0.001). There was no statistical difference of plasma sEPCR level between the late onset group and the control group(t=2.534, P=0.100). Conclusions: The pathogenesis of early onset and late onset severe preeclampsia may be different. Decreased expression of EPCR in placenta may be associated with the pathogenesis of early onset severe preeclampsia.

Abstract
Ti-C:H coatings were deposited on original, nitrided, and polished-nitrided AISI 316L stainless steel substrates using a closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system. Sliding friction wear tests were performed in 0.89 wt.% NaCl solution under a load of 30 N against AISI 316L stainless steel, Si3N4, and Ti6Al4V balls, respectively. The electrochemical properties of the various specimens were investigated by means of corrosion tests performed in 0.89 wt.% NaCl solution at room temperature. Finally, the biocompatibility properties of the specimens were investigated by performing cell culturing experiments using purified mouse leukemic monocyte macrophage cells (Raw264.7). In general, the results showed that plasma nitriding followed by Ti-C:H coating deposition provides an effective means of improving the wear resistance, anti-corrosion properties, and biocompatibility performance of AISI 316L stainless steel.

Abstract
Background The tristetraprolin (TTP) family of mRNA-binding proteins contains three major members, Ttp, Zfp36l1, and Zfp36l2. Ttp down-regulates the stability of AU-rich element–containing mRNAs and functions as an anti-inflammation regulator. Methods To examine whether other TTP family proteins also play roles in the inflammatory response, their expression profiles and the possible mRNA targets were determined in the knockdown cells. Results Ttp mRNA and protein were highly induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), whereas Zfp36l1 and Zfp36l2 mRNAs were down-regulated and their proteins were phosphorylated during early lipopolysaccharide stimulation. Biochemical and functional analyses exhibited that the decrease of Zfp36l2 mRNA was cross-regulated by Ttp. Knockdown of Zfp36l1 and Zfp36l2 increased the basal level of Mkp-1 mRNAs by prolonging its half-life. Increasing the expression of Mkp-1 inhibited the activation of p38 MAPK under lipopolysaccharide stimulation and down-regulated Tnfα, and Ttp mRNA. In addition, hyper-phosphorylation of Zfp36l1 might stabilize Mkp-1 expression by forming a complex with the adapter protein 14-3-3 and decreasing the interaction with deadenylase Caf1a. Conclusions Our findings imply that the expression and phosphorylation of Zfp36l1 and Zfp36l2 may modulate the basal level of Mkp-1 mRNA to control p38 MAPK activity during lipopolysaccharide stimulation, which would affect the inflammatory mediators production. Zfp36l1 and Zfp36l2 are important regulators of the innate immune response. Abstract
We examined the correlation between PNPLA7 gene polymorphisms at the rs61754920 and rs11137410 loci and menstrual disorder in women of reproductive age in the Central Plain. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood; polymerase chain reaction-ligase detection reaction and SNaPshot genotyping were used to detect polymorphisms in the rs61754920 and rs11137410 gene loci, respectively. The results for the 2 loci in individuals of different blood types were statistically analyzed. The proportion of the AA homozygote at the rs61754920 locus in the PNPLA7 gene was the lowest, while the proportion of the CC homozygote at the rs11137410 locus in the PNPLA7 gene was the highest. There were no statistical differences in the frequency distribution of genotypes and alleles at the 2 loci between control and test groups. The frequency of the TT genotype at the rs11137410 locus in women with type O blood was significantly lower in the test group than in the control group. Frequencies of the C and T alleles were significantly different between the 2 groups. There may be an association between the PNPLA7 gene and type O blood or a combined effect of the 2 genes.

Abstract
The Prp19-associated complex is required for spliceosome activation by stabilizing the binding of U5 and U6 on the spliceosome after the release of U4. The complex comprises at least eight proteins, among which Ntc90 and Ntc77 contain multiple tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) elements. We have previously shown that Ntc90 is not involved in spliceosome activation, but is required for the recruitment of essential first-step factor Yju2 to the spliceosome. We demonstrate here that Ntc77 has dual functions in both spliceosome activation and the first catalytic step in recruiting Yju2. We have identified an amino-terminal region of Ntc77, which encompasses the N-terminal domain and the first three TPR motifs, dispensable for spliceosome activation but required for stable interaction of Yju2 with the spliceosome. Deletion of this region had no severe effect on the integrity of the NTC, binding of NTC to the spliceosome or spliceosome activation, but impaired splicing and exhibited a dominant-negative growth phenotype. Our data reveal functional roles of Ntc77 in both spliceosome activation and the first catalytic step, and distinct structural domains of Ntc77 required for these two steps.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Turnover of mRNA is a critical step in the regulation of gene expression, and an important step in mRNA decay is removal of the 5' cap. We previously demonstrated that the expression of some immediate early gene mRNAs is controlled by RNA stability during early differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Here we show that the mouse decapping protein Dcp1a is phosphorylated via the ERK signaling pathway during early differentiation of preadipocytes. Mass spectrometry analysis and site-directed mutagenesis combined with a kinase assay identified ERK pathway-mediated dual phosphorylation at Ser 315 and Ser 319 of Dcp1a. To understand the functional effects of Dcp1a phosphorylation, we examined protein-protein interactions between Dcp1a and other decapping components with co-immunoprecipitation. Dcp1a interacted with Ddx6 and Edc3 through its proline-rich C-terminal extension, whereas the conserved EVH1 (enabled vasodilator-stimulated protein homology 1) domain in the N terminus of Dcp1a showed a stronger interaction with Dcp2. Once ERK signaling was activated, the interaction between Dcp1a and Ddx6, Edc3, or Edc4 was not affected by Dcp1a phosphorylation. Phosphorylated Dcp1a did, however, enhanced interaction with Dcp2. Protein complexes immunoprecipitated with the recombinant phosphomimetic Dcp1a(S315D/S319D) mutant contained more Dcp2 than did those immunoprecipitated with the nonphosphorylated Dcp1a(S315A/S319A) mutant. In addition, Dcp1a associated with AU-rich element (ARE)-containing mRNAs such as MAPK phosphatase-1 (MKP-1), whose mRNA stability was analyzed under the overexpression of Dcp1a constructs in the Dcp1a knockdown 3T3-L1 cells. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE Our findings suggest that ERK-phosphorylated Dcp1a enhances its interaction with the decapping enzyme Dcp2 during early differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells.

Abstract
The tristetraprolin (TTP) family comprises zinc finger-containing AU-rich element (ARE)-binding proteins consisting of three major members: TTP, ZFP36L1, and ZFP36L2. The present study generated specific antibodies against each TTP member to evaluate its expression during differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. In contrast to the inducible expression of TTP, results indicated constitutive expression of ZFP36L1 and ZFP36L2 in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and their phosphorylation in response to differentiation signals. Physical RNA pull-down and functional luciferase assays revealed that ZFP36L1 and ZFP36L2 bound to the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of MAPK phosphatase-1 (MKP-1) mRNA and downregulated Mkp-1 3'UTR-mediated luciferase activity. Mkp-1 is an immediate early gene for which the mRNA is transiently expressed in response to differentiation signals. The half-life of Mkp-1 mRNA was longer at 30 min of induction than at 1 h and 2 h of induction. Knockdown of TTP or ZFP36L2 increased the Mkp-1 mRNA half-life at 1 h of induction. Knockdown of ZFP36L1, but not ZFP36L2, increased Mkp-1 mRNA basal levels via mRNA stabilization and downregulated ERK activation. Differentiation induced phosphorylation of ZFP36L1 through ERK and AKT signals. Phosphorylated ZFP36L1 then interacted with 14-3-3, which might decrease its mRNA destabilizing activity. Inhibition of adipogenesis also occurred in ZFP36L1 and TTP knockdown cells. The findings indicate that the differential expression of TTP family members regulates immediate early gene expression and modulates adipogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To search suitable measure for rapid control intestinal helminthiasis and long-term strengthen efficacy. METHODS The treatment was taken in egg-positive population of intestinal helminthiasis in 1986-1988. The treatment was carried out only in the selected population in 1989-1992. No measure was taken in 1993-2000. RESULTS (1) The prevalence rate of hookworm, Ascaris and Trichuris decreased to 3.2%, 37.3% and 3.5% respectively after administration of albendazole twice a year for 3 years. (2) The prevalence rate of hookworm continued to decrease to 0.5% after treatment on selected population. (3) The prevalence rate and the intensity of hookworm has been less than 1% and 10/LPG for 8 years. No hookworm larvae had been isolated from the soil. Endothelium-dependent contraction and direct relaxation induced by baicalein in rat mesenteric artery. Eur J Pharmacol 1999; 374:41-7. Abstract
The vascular effect of purified baicalein from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Huangqin) was examined in rat isolated mesenteric arteries. Baicalein exerts both contractile and relaxant effects on the U46619-, phenylephrine- or high K+-contracted endothelium-intact arteries. In endothelium-denuded arteries, the contractile response to baicalein (0.3-10 microM) was absent while the relaxant response to baicalein (30-300 microM) remained. Pretreatment with 100 microM N(G)-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA) or 3 microM methylene blue abolished the baicalein-induced contraction while 10 microM indomethacin or 100 nM BQ610 had no effect. Pretreatment with baicalein (3-10 microM) significantly attenuated the relaxation induced by acetylcholine or by A23187. In contrast, baicalein did not affect the sodium nitroprusside-induced relaxation in endothelium-denuded arteries. Baicalein also concentration dependently inhibited the contractile response to 1 microM phorbol 12,13-diacetate (PDA) in Ca2+-free solution. Baicalein had little effect on the contractile response to 60 mM K+ or to 10 mM caffeine in endothelium-denuded arteries. The baicalein-induced relaxation was unaffected by 1 microM glibenclamide or by 3 mM tetraethylammonium ions in endothelium-denuded arteries. These results indicate that baicalein at low concentrations caused a contractile response and inhibited the endothelium-dependent relaxation, probably through inhibition of endothelial nitric oxide (NO) formation/release. At higher concentrations, baicalein relaxed the arterial smooth muscle partially through inhibition of the protein kinase C-mediated contractile mechanism.

Abstract
The emphasis in this article is on the study of nonstationary two-dimensional (2-D) random fields with wide-sense stationary increments, wide-sense stationary jumps, and 2-D fractional Brownian motion (fBm) fields. The effort made in this work is to develop a realizable method of stationarization provided for nonstationary 2-D random fields. We also present the correlation functions of the discrete wavelet transform relating to 2-D fBm fields that will decay hyperbolically fast.

The chromosomal effect of birchen dust as determined by the micronucleus test. BIOMEDICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES : BES 1997; 10:396-401. Abstract
In a wood processing factory, the measured air concentration of birchen dust was 1.26 +/- 0.41 mg/m3, and the micronucleus frequency of peripheral blood lymphocytes in 83 workers exposed to wood dust was 1.13 +/- 2.83/1000, which was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than that of control group (0.51 +/- 1.41/1000). The number of exposed workers with positive micronucleus test was 9.6%, which was higher than that of control group (4.5%), but the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). The micronucleus test in mice treated with water extracts of unsteamed and unbaked birchen dust showed that the micronucleus frequencies in all treated groups were significantly higher than that of control group (P < 0.01) and there was also a dose response correlation (r = 0.96, P < 0.0005). The results of steamed and baked birchen dust extracts were significantly lower than those of the unsteamed and unbaked ones at the same doses (P < 0.001). This suggests that when the birchen dust is steamed at the temperature of 100 degrees C for 24 h or baked at the temperature of 80 degrees C, its inducing effect in micronucleus test could be lowered.

Transfusion-acquired AIDS in Taiwan. J Formos Med Assoc 1996; 95:51-5. [PMID: 8640096] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/01/2023]
Abstract
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) can be transmitted through blood transfusion. The first transfusion-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient in Taiwan was a 46-year-old woman who received two units of whole blood during a hysterectomy at a provincial hospital in 1985. In 1991, she experienced a herpes zoster infection. In March 1993, she had extensive herpetic gingivostomatitis and another herpes zoster attack, and was treated at the same hospital. Two months later, she had oral candidiasis and was treated at a medical center. She was not tested for HIV-1 infection until she developed Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in June 1993. In February 1994, and developed cytomegalovirus retinitis and died 6 months later. Donor blood given to the patients during the hysterectomy was HIV-1 positive. The donor's HIV infection was discovered in 1991 and he died of AIDS in 1993. As blood centers in Taiwan did not start screening for HIV-1 until January 1988, it is urgently recommended that any individual who received a blood transfusion between 1984 and 1987 in Taiwan and who currently experiences repeated episodes of opportunistic infections have an HIV-1 blood test. The receipt of a blood transfusion between 1984 and 1987 should be listed by the Department of Health as an indication for HIV-1 screening.

Study on micronucleus frequency in peripheral lymphocytes in workers of match factories. BIOMEDICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES : BES 1994; 7:150-153. Abstract
This paper reports the results of the study of micronucleus frequency in peripheral lymphocytes in workers exposed to soft wood dust (poplar and linden wood) in match factories. 298 workers exposed to soft wood dust in three match factories were defined as exposure group and 45 waiters in a restaurant as control group. The frequency of micronucleus in peripheral lymphocytes was examined and the control's 95% confidential upper limit >, 4/1000 was defined as the standard to determine the positivity. The positive rate in the exposure group was 36.2% while that in the control group was only 4.4%; the difference is significant (P < 0.01). As the coefficient of correlation between length of work and positive rate was 0.86 (P < 0.01), a dose/time-response is in existence. Meanwhile, the analysis of relation between quantity of smoking and positive rate eliminated the effect of smoking on variation of positive rates. In this paper, we also discussed the relation between positive rates and wood dust concentrations in different worksites and we think that the volatile and unsteady substances in soft wood dust are micronucleus-inducing matters.

Abstract
Different periodic selective chemotherapeutic schemes were used to control hookworm and other soil-transmitted helminthiases in eight villages in five counties in Zhejiang Province, China, 1985-1988. The results showed that the prevalence rates of hookworm, ascariasis, and trichuriasis decreased from 35.0-74.4%, 47.0-.76% and 22.9-47.5% to 3.2-15.8%, 9.9-47.8%, and 3.5-31.2%, respectively, using pyrantel pamoate (10 mg/kg for 1-2 days) or albendazole (400 mg for 1-2 days, once or twice a year for 2-3 years). The eggs per gram of feces of hookworm and Trichuris trichiura also dropped markedly after control. Moreover, the mean hemoglobin levels of sampled populations increased after several treatments. The authors recommend periodic selective chemotherapy as the main method to control soil-transmitted helminthiases, especially hookworm infections.

Abstract
We employed an immunocytochemical method to examine human brain for the presence of immunoreactive thymosin alpha 1 (T alpha 1), a peptide derivative of thymic tissue, using a well-characterized antiserum. For cell identification, serial sections were stained with antisera to thymosin beta 4(T beta 4), another thymic peptide that identifies oligodendrocytes, and with anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) antiserum that stains astrocytes in a double-staining technique using avidin-biotinylated horseradish peroxidase or avidin-biotinylated alkaline phosphatase complex. Antiserum to T alpha 1 stained the cell body, but not the processes, of GFAP-positive astrocytes, suggesting that T alpha 1 is a common antigen shared between thymus and astrocytes. Because T alpha 1 and its precursor molecule play a role in cell proliferation and immunomodulation, our findings could explain the role of astrocytes in certain central nervous system diseases.
