[Efficacy and safety of bendamustine-rituximab combination therapy for newly diagnosed indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and elderly mantle cell lymphoma: a multi-center prospective phase II clinical trial in China]. Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of bendamustine in combination with rituximab (BR regimen) for the treatment of newly diagnosed indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-iNHL) and elderly mantle cell lymphoma (eMCL) . Methods: From December 1, 2020 to September 10, 2022, a multi-center prospective study was conducted across ten Grade A tertiary hospitals in Shandong Province, China. The BR regimen was administered to evaluate its efficacy and safety in newly diagnosed B-iNHL and eMCL patients, and all completed at least four cycles of induction therapy. Results: The 72 enrolled patients with B-iNHL or MCL were aged 24-74 years, with a median age of 55 years. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status scores of 0-1 were observed in 76.4% of patients, while 23.6% had scores of 2. Disease distribution included follicular lymphoma (FL) (51.4% ), marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) (33.3% ), eMCL (11.1% ), and the unknown subtype (4.2% ). According to the Ann Arbor staging system, 16.7% and 65.3% of patients were diagnosed with stage Ⅲ and stage Ⅳ lymphomas, respectively. Following four cycles of BR induction therapy, the overall response rate was 98.6%, with a complete response (CR) rate of 83.3% and a partial response (PR) rate of 15.3%. Only one eMCL patient experienced disease progression during treatment, and only one FL patient experienced a relapse. Even when evaluated using CT alone, the CR rate was 63.9%, considering the differences between PET/CT and CT assessments. The median follow-up duration was 11 months (range: 4-22), with a PFS rate of 96.8% and an OS rate of 100.0%. The main hematologic adverse reactions included grade 3-4 leukopenia (27.8%, with febrile neutropenia observed in 8.3% of patients), grade 3-4 lymphopenia (23.6% ), grade 3-4 anemia (5.6% ), and grade 3-4 thrombocytopenia (4.2% ). The main non-hematologic adverse reactions such as fatigue, nausea/vomiting, rash, and infections occurred in less than 20.0% of patients. Conclusion: Within the scope of this clinical trial conducted in China, the BR regimen demonstrated efficacy and safety in treating newly diagnosed B-iNHL and eMCL patients.

Abstract
Objective: The gold immunochromatographic assay for detection of SARS-CoV-2 antigen was evaluated by international multi-center clinical trial. Methods: A total of 1 855 clinical parallel samples with valid test results (for nucleic acid and antigen tests, respectively) were collected from nine countries, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, France, India, Thailand, Malaysia, the United States of America and Brazil, with sampling period from January 3 to September 22, 2021. These samples were detected by SARS-CoV-2 antigen test kit (colloidal gold immunochromatography assay) and nucleic acid detection kit (real-time fluorescent quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction). Positive coincidence rates [(number of antigen-positive cases/nucleic acid-positive cases)×100%], negative coincidence rates [(number of antigen-negative cases/nucleic acid-negative cases)×100%], total coincidence rates [(number of cases with consistent results for both antigen and nucleic acid detection/number of total cases) ×100%], as well as Kappa values were calculated. The differences of the above indictors among different countries were evaluated by the coefficient of variation. The detection rates of the antigen test for samples with different cycle threshold values (Ct values) for the nucleic acid detection, different characteristics and different mutant strains were analyzed. Results: For all samples, the positive, negative, and total coincidence rate between the antigen test and nucleic acid assay was 90.8% (569/627), 99.7% (1 224/1 228) and 96.7% (1 793/1 855), respectively, and the consistency coefficient Kappa value was 0.924. Among these countries, the coefficient of variation for positive coincidence rates (except for Malaysia with a lot of samples with Ct value>30), negative coincidence rates (except for France without negative samples) and total coincidence rates (except for France) was 6%,<1%, and 6%, respectively. When Ct values were less than 25, the detection rates of antigen test were 83.3%-100% for each countries (the coefficient of variation was 6%); the total detection rate and the coefficient of variation was 93.4% (428/458) and 5%, respectively, for asymptomatic infected persons and cases within 7 days post onset of symptoms; the total detection rate for various SARS-CoV-2 mutant strains was 97.5% (119/122); and it showed negative results for samples from cases infected with other viruses, including influenza A virus subtype H1N1, influenza B virus, respiratory syncytial virus subgroups A and B, coxsackievirus 16, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus types 1 and 4, Epstein-Barr virus and adenovirus. Conclusion: The SARS-CoV-2 antigen test kit showed excellent authenticity, and there were few differences for its indictors among nine countries, therefore it can meet the needs of large-scale early screening of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has a huge societal impact due to the high prevalence, irreversible joint damage and systemic complications. Gut microbiota plays an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of RA by regulating the host immune system. Restoring intestinal homeostasis by altering the microbiota could be an attractive strategy for the prevention and treatment of RA. However, the signature features of microbial dysbiosis in RA are still controversial. Therefore, we aim to elucidate the characteristic change in the diversity and composition of gut microbiota in RA. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will systematically search through PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library, as well as dissertations and conference proceedings. The reference lists of all included studies will be also reviewed to retrieve additional relevant studies. The case-control studies that reported either the relative abundance of bacteria at the phylum or genus level or at least one of the alpha-diversity, beta-diversity indexes in both RA and healthy controls will be included. Eligible studies will be screened independently by two reviewers according to the inclusion criteria. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale will be used to assess the quality of the included studies. Data extraction, qualitative and quantitative analysis will be performed within the gut microbial dysbiosis in RA. The expected outcomes will be the identification of the specific changes in composition and diversity of the gut microbiota in patients with RA. The quality of evidence will be assessed by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation framework. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval is unnecessary as this review does not address the data and privacy of patients. The results will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and conference presentations. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42021225229.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic value of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid pathogen detection combined with cryptococcal antigen test(CrAg) for pulmonary cryptococcosis(PC). Methods: A retrospective case analysis was performed on non-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients admitted to Ninghai First Hospital for suspected PC from January 2018 to December 2019. Fifty-nine patients were included. Sixteen cases (8 males and 8 females) were diagnosed with PC, aged from 18 to 76 years[an average age of (52±14) years], while 43 cases were diagnosed as having Non-PC. All patients had undergone both serum CrAg test and BALF pathogen detection(cultures and direct examination) combined with BALF-CrAg test. The sensitivity and specificity of the combined method of BALF was evaluated, and a parallel comparison of the diagnostic efficiencies of the two methods were made. Results: Of the 16 confirmed PC cases, serum CrAg tests were positive in 11 and negative in 5 cases, while the combined method showed that 14 were positive and 2 were negative. Compared with the clinical final diagnosis, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value showed that the serum CrAg tests were 68.8% (11/16), 97.7% (42/43), 91.7% (11/12), 89.3% (42/47) respectively, versus 87.5% (14/16), 100.0% (43/43), 100% (14/14), 95.6% (43/45) by the combined method of BALF. The results displayed no statistical difference between the two diagnostic methods (P =1.000). Among the 5 initially serum CrAg-negative cases, 4 were later confirmed as proven PC via the combined method of BALF and the other one by percutaneous lung biopsy. Conclusion: The combined method of BALF pathogen detection with BALF-CrAg showed a similar statistical efficiency rate for diagnosing pulmonary cryptococcosis compared with serum CrAg tests. It may serve as an efficient diagnosis method for PC cases with negative serum CrAg tests.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the antidepressant effects of auricular intradermal acupuncture (AIA) of areas innervated by both the auricular branch of the vagus nerve and the trigeminal nerve. METHODS Forty-nine patients with depression were randomly allocated into an AIA group (n = 25) and a sham AIA group (n = 24). Both groups received selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as conventional treatment. The AIA group received AIA stimulation, and the sham AIA group received sham AIA, which constituted being subjected to an attached needle that did not penetrate the skin. The needles were retained for 4 h each session, with five sessions a week for a total duration of 2 weeks. The outcomes were assessed by the 17-item Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD-17), five factors (sleep disorder, retardation, cognitive dysfunction, anxiety/somatization, and weight) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) at weeks 0, 1, and 2. RESULTS Fifty-four patients were randomly assigned to the AIA (n = 27) and sham AIA group (n = 27), of whom 25 patients in the AIA and 24 patients in the sham AIA group were analyzed. AIA-treated patients displayed a significantly greater reduction from baseline in HAMD-17 scores (p = 0.03) and SDS scores (p = 0.02) at week 2 compared to patients receiving sham AIA. The AIA intervention also produced a higher rate of clinically significant responses in sleep disorders (p = 0.07) compared to sham AIA. No adverse events occurred in either group. CONCLUSION According to the findings of this preliminary study, AIA appears to have additional value compared to SSRIs alone in treating patients with depressive disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create an interactive three-dimensional (3D) world, which gives users a sense of spatial presence. In nursing education, VR has been used to help optimize teaching and learning processes. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of VR in nursing education in the areas of knowledge, skills, satisfaction, confidence, and performance time. METHODS We conducted a meta-analysis of the effectiveness of VR in nursing education based on the Cochrane methodology. An electronic literature search using the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), up to December 2019 was conducted to identify studies that reported the effectiveness of VR on knowledge, skills, satisfaction, confidence, and performance time. The study selection and data extraction were carried out by two independent reviewers. The methodological quality of the selected studies was determined using the Cochrane criteria for risk-of-bias assessment. RESULTS A total of 12 studies, including 821 participants, were selected for the final analysis. We found that VR was more effective than the control conditions in improving knowledge (standard mean difference [SMD]=0.58, 95% CI 0.41-0.75, P<.001, I2=47%). However, there was no difference between VR and the control conditions in skills (SMD=0.01, 95% CI -0.24 to 0.26, P=.93, I2=37%), satisfaction (SMD=0.01, 95% CI -0.79 to 0.80, P=.99, I2=86%), confidence (SMD=0.00, 95% CI -0.28 to 0.27, P=.99, I2=0%), and performance time (SMD=-0.55, 95% CI -2.04 to 0.94, P=.47, I2=97%). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that VR can effectively improve knowledge in nursing education, but it was not more effective than other education methods in areas of skills, satisfaction, confidence, and performance time. Further rigorous studies with a larger sample size are warranted to confirm these results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A systematic review and analysis of data from several rheumatoid arthritis metabolomics studies attempts to determine which metabolites can be used as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and to explore the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS We searched all the subject-related documents published by EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library from the database to the September 2019 publication. Two researchers independently screened the literature and extracted the data. QUADOMICS tool was used to assess the quality of studies included in this systematic review. RESULTS A total of 10 studies met the inclusion criteria of systematic review, including 502 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 373 healthy people. Among them, the biological samples utilised for metabolomic analysis include: serum (n=8), urine (n=1) and synovial fluid (n=1). Some metabolites play an important role in rheumatoid arthritis: glucose, lactic acid, citric acid, leucine, methionine, isoleucine, valine, phenylalanine, threonine, serine, proline, glutamate, histidine, alanine, cholesterol, glycerol, and ribose. CONCLUSIONS Metabolomics provides important new opportunities for further research in rheumatoid arthritis and is expected to elucidate the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis that has not been fully understood before.

Abstract
Background Moxibustion is widely used in East Asian countries to manage the symptom of rheumatic diseases. The aim of this study was to identify potential metabolic profiles of moxibustion on relieving ankylosing spondylitis (AS) mice through UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS metabolomic study. Methods Thirty-two female Balb/c mice were randomized into healthy control (HC), AS model, moxibustion at acupuncture points (MA) in AS model, and moxibustion at non-acupuncture points (MNA) AS model groups. Moxibustion was administered daily at GV4, bilateral BL23 and bilateral ST36 acupuncture points for four weeks in the MA group. The overall health status, the thickness of hind paws and the tissue concentrations of IL-1β, PGE2, IL-6 and TNF-α were assessed. The UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS was used to explore the perturbations of endogenous metabolites in tissue and urine of AS model mice intervened by moxibustion. Results Compared with the AS group, the overall health status was significantly improved after 4-week moxibustion intervention (p < 0.05). The results also showed that MA significantly reduced the levels of paw thickness and decreased the levels of four cytokines in the tissue (p < 0.01). Thirty-seven endogenous metabolites identified by the OPLS-DA were considered to be contributing to therapeutic effects of moxibustion. Moreover, metabolic pathway analysis further revealed that the identified metabolites were mainly involved in TCA cycle, Lipid metabolism, Amino Acid metabolism, Intestinal flora metabolism and Purine metabolism. Conclusions UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS based metabolomics approach, as a novel and powerful tool, can help us to gain the insights into potential mechanisms of action of moxibustion for AS.

Abstract

Study selection, data extraction was performed critically and independently by two reviewers. Cochrane criteria for risk of bias was used to assess the methodological quality of the trials. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation Methodology (GRADE) was applied to test the quality of evidence from the quantitative analysis. RESULTS Ten RCTs, including 987 patients, met the inclusion criteria. Moxibustion had a superior effect on VAS score when compared with western medicine [RR = -1.69, 95%CI(-2.40, -0.98), p < 0.00001] and acupuncture [RR = -0.47, 95%CI(-0.92, -0.02), p=0.04], but it failed to do so when compared with core stability training [RR = -0.41, 95%CI(-0.87, 0.05), p=0.08]. The result showed that moxibustion plus other active treatments (including western medicine, massage, acupuncture and core stability training) had better effects on low back pain relief compared with active treatments alone. Moxibustion showed favourable effects on disability [SMD = -3.80, 95%CI (-5.49, -2.11), p < 0.0001], JOA score [MD = 4.10, 95%CI(2.30, 5.90), p < 0.00001], and SF-36 score [MD = 13.41, 95%CI(9.68, 17.14), p < 0.00001]. The evidence level of the results from the ten studies was determined to be very low to low. CONCLUSIONS It is difficult to draw firm conclusions that moxibustion is an effective intervention for treating CLBP due to the small sample size of eligible trails and the high risk of bias among the available articles. Rigorously designed large-scale RCTs are required to further confirm the results in this review.

Abstract
目的 探讨负性共刺激分子Tim-3在初诊急性髓系白血病(AML)患者外周血自然杀伤细胞(NK细胞)表面的表达特征及其临床意义。 方法 采集2013年6月至2014年6月苏州大学附属第一医院血液内科收治的未经任何临床措施干预的39例AML患者外周血及28名健康志愿者的外周血,采用CD3−、CD56+、Tim-3+为标志,经免疫荧光标记和流式细胞术检测Tim-3在AML患者外周血NK细胞上的表达。 结果 初诊AML患者外周血NK细胞占淋巴细胞比例为(5.74±5.31)%,较正常对照组的(12.55±6.33)%显著下降(t=4.596,P<0.001);初诊AML患者外周血NK细胞上Tim-3的表达水平为(42.67±19.08)%,较正常对照组的(60.99±20.69)%显著下降(t=3.781,P<0.001)。AML患者外周血NK细胞比例与其染色体核型相关(t=2.915,P<0.05);Tim-3在AML患者NK细胞表达水平与患者诱导缓解率、危险分层相关(P值均<0.05)。 结论 AML患者外周血中NK细胞比例及Tim-3表达水平明显下降,Tim-3在AML患者外周血NK细胞上表达下调与AML的预后相关。

Abstract
Objective: To study the improvement of lower urinary tract symptoms and related influencing factors in patients with prostate cancer complicated with lower urinary tract symptoms after drugs endocrine therapy. Methods: The clinical data of 80 patients with prostate cancer with lower urinary tract symptoms and receiving drug endocrine therapy in Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital from March 2015 to June 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were followed up, and the mode of administration of the endocrine therapy, the time of administration, and the international prostate symptom score (IPSS2) and quality of life score (QOL2) after treatment were recorded. The improvement of IPSS score and quality of life score after endocrine therapy was observed. The correlation between variance and age, the prostate volume, PSA, tumor stage, Gleason score, symptom severity, medication mode, and medication time were analyzed by variance, chi-square test and paired sample t test. Results: The differences of QOL and IPSS before and after therapy were statistically significant (P<0.05). Chi-square test found that the effective rate of drug endocrine therapy was not related to age (χ2=0.800; P=0.371), tumor stage (χ2=0.094; P=0.759), PSA (χ2=0.651; P=0.420), prostate volume (χ2=0.216; P=0.642), Gleason score (χ2=0.157; P=0.692), symptom severity (χ2=0.457; P=0.499), medication mode (χ2=2.910; P=0.233), and medication time (χ2=4.159; P=0.385). Analysis of variance found that prostate volume and the severity of symptoms was significantly associated with improvement in lower urinary tract symptoms. Conclusions: Drug endocrine therapy can effectively improve the lower urinary tract symptoms of patients with prostate cancer, and the more severe the symptoms and prostate volumeof the patients, the more obvious the improvement of lower urinary tract symptoms. The age, tumor stage, PSA, Gleason score, time and manner of administration were not significantly correlated with improvement in lower urinary tract symptoms.

Abstract
In this study, the swabs were collected among patients with an influenza-like illness (ILI) admitted to 2 sentinel surveillance hospitals of Yantai from April 2014 to August 2017. All specimen were cultured and identified by hemagglutination inhibition assay. Complete sequences of Hemagglutinin (HA) of influenza A were amplified, sequenced and analyzed using molecular and phylogenetic methods. The potential vaccine efficacy were calculated using Pepitope model. The results showed that the antigenicity of A (H3N2) had changed greatly. 8 strains of influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 belonged to subclade 6B.1 and 14 strains clustered in 6B.2. 12 strains of influenza A (H3N2) fell into subgroup 3C.3a and 33 strains clustered in 3C.2a. Several residues at antigen sites and potential glycosylation sites had changed in influenza A strains. Vaccine efficacy of influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 in 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons were 77.29% and 79.11% of that of a perfect match with vaccine strain, meanwhile vaccine efficacy of influenza A (H3N2) in 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 were-5.18%, 16.97% and 42.05% separately. In conclusion, the influenza A virus circulated in Yantai from 2014 to 2017 presented continual genetic variation. The recommended vaccine strains still afforded protection against influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 strains and provided suboptimal protection against influenza A (H3N2) strains.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the pathological characters of urothelial barrier in prostatic ducts of elderly male SD rats. Methods: Ten elderly male SD rats were anesthetized with chloral hydrate and then took the bladder, prostatic urethra and prostate tissues for serial pathological sections and HE staining. Immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of the Cytokeratin 7 (CK7), Cytokeratin 20 (CK20), Uroplakin Ⅲ (UP Ⅲ), Zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and Occludin in issues, and to make densitometric analysis (IA) on immunohistochemical results of each antibody. Results: HE staining observed that urothelial umbrella cells exist in the bladder, prostatic urethra and proximal prostatic duct. Immunohistochemical method showed the CK7, UPⅢ, ZO-1 and Occludin were positive in bladder, prostatic urethra and prostatic duct, while CK20 was negative. CK7 and UPⅢ were positive in the proximal prostatic duct, and negative in the bottom of the ductal acinar lumen; ZO-1 and Occludin were positive in prostatic duct. The IOD/Area values of CK7 and UP Ⅲ, in bladder, prostatic urethra, proximal prostatic duct, the middle of prostatic duct and bottom of the ductal acinar lumen, were 0.16, 0.13, 0.06, 0.05, 0.00 and 0.17, 0.16, 0.08, 0.05, 0.00(P<0.05,respectively). The expression of ZO-1 and Occludin in bladder (0.14 and 0.13) were higher than those in other tissues (0.11-0.12 and 0.09-0.10, P<0.05); the expression of ZO-1 and Occludin, which in proximal prostatic duct to the middle of prostatic duct and bottom of the ductal acinar lumen, had no significant difference (0.12-0.11 and 0.09-0.09, P>0.05). The IA values of CK20 were extremely low (0.00-0.01, P>0.05). Conclusion: Urothelial barriers partially exist in the prostatic ducts of elderly male SD rats, and with the prostatic ducts gradually extending to the bottom of acinar lumen, the urothelial barriers disappear. The results lay a foundation for further study on the repair of urinary epithelial barrier after prostatectomy.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the efficiency and safety of thulium laser resection of the prostate-tangerine technique (TmLRP-TT) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) of various sizes. Methods: Clinical data of 249 BPH patients received TmLRP-TT or TURP were retrospectively collected. Patients were divided into small prostate group [prostate volume (PV)<40 ml], medium prostate group (40 ml≤PV<80 ml) and large prostate group (PV ≥ 80 ml) based on transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) results. Age, PV, Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), International prostate symptom score (IPSS), Quality of life (QoL), maximum of flow rate (Q(max)) and post-void residual urine (PVR) of patients received TmLRP-TT or TURP in each group were analyzed, as well as the perioperative data including operation time, hemoglobin and serum sodium level, transfusion, postoperative length of indwelling catheter and postoperative hospital stay. Furthermore, the postoperative complication rates of patients received the two operative methods in each group up to follow-up of 6 months were compared. Results: As for baseline indicators, there were no significant differences regarding age, prostate volume, PSA, IPSS, QoL, Qmax and PVR of patients received TmLRP-TT or TURP in each group (all P>0.05). In the small prostate group, there were no significant differences with operation time, hemoglobin and serum sodium level, transfusion, postoperative length of indwelling catheter and postoperative hospital stay received TmLRP-TT or TURP (all P>0.05). For the medium prostate group, patients received TmLRP-TT underwent longer operation time [(67.4±15.1) vs (57.5±11.5) min, P<0.001], but shorter length of indwelling catheter [(1.5±0.6) vs (3.1±0.9) d, P<0.001] and postoperative hospital stay [(3.5±0.9) vs (5.6±1.0) d, P<0.001], and there were no significant differences regarding transfusion rate (3/73 vs 1/78, P=0.280), hemoglobin [(9.8±9.0) vs (12.2±9.6) g/L, P=0.107] and serum sodium decrease [(2.07±3.65) vs (2.97±3.35) mmol/L, P=0.373]. In the large prostate group, patients received TmLRP-TT also underwent longer operation time [(86.5±14.3) vs (76.7±14.6) min, P=0.022], but less hemoglobin [(11.3±13.8) vs (23.3±15.0) g/L, P=0.006] and serum sodium decrease [(2.41±2.67) vs (4.00±6.22) mmol/L, P=0.042], lower transfusion rate (5/27 vs 0/24, P=0.026), and shorter length of indwelling catheter [(1.8±0.7) vs (4.3±1.5) d, P<0.001] as well as postoperative hospital stay [(3.7±1.1) vs (6.1±1.7) d, P<0.001]. Less overall complications were encountered in the medium (38/73 vs 24/78, P=0.008) and large (26/27 vs 10/24, P<0.001) prostate group who received TmLRP-TT, which was not seen in the small prostate group (P=0.589). Conclusions: TmLRP-TT and TURP are similarly efficient for the treatment of BPH of various sizes. For BPH patients with medium and large prostate, TmLRP-TT demonstrated significant advantages in reducing the overall complications, although the operation time was slightly longer.

Abstract
AIMS To assess the association between attenuated heart rate recovery, a non-invasive measure of autonomic dysfunction, and risk of diabetes in the general population. METHODS Databases were searched for cohort studies up to May 2017 that reported the association of heart rate recovery with the risk of diabetes. The overall hazard ratios for slowest vs fastest heart rate recovery (the referent) and for every 10-beats-per-min decrement in heart rate recovery were calculated using a random effects meta-analysis model. RESULTS Four cohort studies with 430 incident cases of diabetes among a total of 9113 participants during a mean follow-up period of 8.1 years were included. Results showed that the slowest heart rate recovery was associated with a higher risk of diabetes (hazard ratio 1.66, 95% CI 1.16 to 2.38) vs the fastest heart rate recovery, and the hazard ratio of risk of diabetes for every 10-beats-per-min decrement in heart rate recovery was 1.29 (95% CI 1.13 to 1.48). No significant interaction effect was observed regarding the efficacy of 1-min and 2-min heart rate recovery in predicting risk of diabetes (both Pfor interaction >0.60); however, a linear dose-response relationship existed for overall studies and for studies using 1-min heart rate recovery as the exposure (both P >0.60 for non-linearity). CONCLUSIONS Attenuated heart rate recovery is associated with an increased risk of diabetes in a dose-dependent manner, and measurement of heart rate recovery is worth recommending as part of diabetes risk assessment in clinical routines.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the function and mechanism of microRNA-143 (miR-143) in the occurrence and development of breast cancer (BC). A total of 30 BC tissues, 30 corresponding noncancerous tissues, and 10 normal control (NC) breast tissues were obtained to detect the levels of miR-143, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 5 (ERK5) and mitogen-activated protein 3 kinase 7 (MAP3K7) using RT-qPCR, western blotting or immunohistochemistry. The correlation of miR-143 with ERK5 or MAP3K7 was evaluated using Pearson correlation analysis. MCF-7 cells were transiently transfected with miR-143 mimic, miR-143 inhibitor, miR-143 mimic/inhibitor + si-ERK5, si-MAP3K7 or si-cyclin D1. Then, cell growth was evaluated by MTT assay and the expressions of phospho-ERK5 (p-ERK5), ERK5, p-MAP3K7, MAP3K7 and cyclin D1 were detected by western blotting. Results showed that, compared with noncancerous tissues or NC breast tissues, miR-143 level was decreased, while p-ERK5, ERK5, p-MAP3K7 and MAP3K7 expressions were increased in BC tissues (all P<0.01). The miR-143 level was negatively correlated with the mRNA level of ERK5 or MAP3K7 (r=-4.231 or r=-4.280, P<0.01). In addition, up-regulated miR-143 significantly decreased the expressions of p-ERK5, ERK5, p-MAP3K7, MAP3K7 and cyclin D1 (all P<0.01), as well as cell viability in MCF-7 cells (all P<0.05) while the effect of down-regulated miR-143 was the opposite. In conclusion, both ERK5 and MAP3K7 may be the target genes of miR-143. Increased expression of miR-143 can inhibit cell growth, which may be associated with ERK5 and MAP3K7 expressions in BC.

Abstract
The Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) mixing induced by random interface disturbances between two incompressible viscous fluids is simulated numerically. The ensemble averaged spike velocity is found to be remarkably retarded when the random interface disturbances are superimposed with an optimized additional mode. The mode's wavenumber is selected to be large enough to avoid enhancing the dominance of long-wavelength modes, but not so large that its saturated spike and bubble velocities are too small to stimulate a growing effective density-gradient layer suppressing the long-wavelength modes. Such an optimized suppressing mode is expected to be found in the RT mixing including other diffusion processes, e.g., concentration diffusion and thermal diffusion.

Abstract
We study the normal-state transport properties of AFe2As2 (A = K, Rb and Cs) single crystals using Hall coefficient, resistivity and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements. In all three materials, the Hall coefficient R H shows a strong temperature dependence, which is typical for multi-band systems. In particular, R H develops an upturn below a characteristic temperature [Formula: see text], which is in agreement with the incoherence-coherence crossover reported in recent nuclear magnetic resonance studies. A Fermi-liquid-like state, characterized by T (2) behavior of the resistivity and a positive orbital MR obeying Kohler's rule, emerges below T FL ∼0.4 [Formula: see text]. The superconducting transition temperature T c experiences a simultaneous suppression with [Formula: see text] and T FL as the alkali ion's radius increases from A = K to A = Cs, suggesting that the unconventional superconductivity in the AFe2As2 series is related to the strength of the electronic coherence. A phase diagram, similar to that in the heavy fermion Kondo lattice system, is obtained. Based on all the experimental evidence, we argue that the physical properties of this family of heavily hole-doped Fe-based superconductors are controlled by the hybridization between itinerant carriers and localized orbitals, and the Kondo scenario could be effective in such a case.

Abstract
AIM Although pedometer intervention is effective in increasing physical activity among adults with Type 2 diabetes, its impact on weight loss remains unclear. This meta-analysis was aimed to assess whether pedometer intervention promotes weight loss. METHODS Three different databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in English up to April 2015. Studies were included if they investigated the effects of pedometer intervention on weight loss, as measured by BMI or weight. Effect sizes were aggregated using a random-effects model. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were used to identify potential moderators. Eleven RCTs with 1258 participants were included. All enrolled participants were overweight or obese. RESULTS Pedometer intervention led to significantly decreased BMI [weighted mean difference (WMD) -0.15 kg/m(2) , 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.29 to -0.02 kg/m(2) ] and reduced weight (WMD -0.65 kg, 95% CI -1.12 to -0.17 kg). Dietary counselling seemed to be a key predictor of the observed changes. However, none of the following variables had a significant influence: step goal setting, baseline age, BMI, weight, sex distribution, disease duration, intervention duration, and baseline values or change scores for total or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. After completion of the pedometer intervention, non-significant declines in BMI and weight were observed during the follow-up periods. CONCLUSIONS Pedometer intervention promotes modest weight loss, but its association with physical activity requires further clarification. Future studies are also required to document dietary and sedentary behaviour changes to facilitate the use of pedometers for weight loss in overweight and obese adults with Type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze document features and current research status of applying proteomics technology in acupuncture and moxibustion research, thereby further providing reference for further research and development in this area. METHODS CNKI, Wangfang Data, CBM, PubMed, and Medline were included. Retrieved were literatures involving applying proteomics technology in acupunc- ture and moxibustion from January 2004 to December 2015. Document features and current research features were statistically analyzed using bibliometrics. RESULTS Totally 91 articles were included, 60 from journals, 8 conference theses, and 23 dissertations. The 60 articles were published in 47 kinds of journals, and 56 of them were published in core journals. Theories of acupuncture and moxibustion (correlated with meridians, zang-fu organs) and mechanism research were hotspots, involving 19 kinds of disease models (dominated as gastric mucosal lesion, cerebral ischemia, and spinal cord injury). Two- dimensional gel based electrophoresis technology was used in 51 articles (69. 86%). CONCLUSIONS Proteomics technology has been widely applied in the field of acupuncture and moxibustion research. It could promote researches on meridians and zang-fu organs correlated theories and mechanisms. The depth and breadth of the study is worth further widening.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the possible impact of moxibustion on the serum proteome of the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were included in this experiment. The CIA animal model was prepared by injection of type II bovine collagen in Freund's adjuvant on the first and seventh day. The 36 rats were randomly divided into two groups: the untreated CIA group (control), and the CIA plus treatment with moxibustion (CIA+moxi) group. Moxibustion was administered daily at ST36 and BL23 for 7, 14 or 21 days (n=12 rats each). Arthritis score was used to assess the severity of arthritis. At the end of each 7 day treatment, blood samples from the control group and the CIA+moxi group were collected. After removal of high abundance proteins from serum samples, two-dimensional gel combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight MS/MS (MALDI-TOF-MS/MS) techniques were performed to examine serum protein expression patterns of the CIA rat model with and without moxibustion treatment. In addition, the relevant proteins were further analysed with the use of bioinformatics analysis. RESULTS Moxibustion significantly decreased arthritis severity in the rats in the CIA+moxi group, when compared with the rats in the CIA group 35 days after the first immunisation (p=0.001). Seventeen protein spots which changed >1.33 or <0.77 at p<0.05 using Bonferonni correction for multiple testing were found to be common to all three comparisons, and these proteins were used for classification of functions using the Gene Ontology method. Consequently, with the use of the Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, the top canonical pathways and a predicted proteomic network related to the moxibustion effect of CIA were established. CONCLUSIONS Using the proteomics technique, we have identified novel candidate proteins that may be involved in the mechanisms of action underlying the beneficial effects of moxibustion in rats with CIA. Our findings suggest that immune responses and metabolic processes may be involved in mediating the effects of moxibustion. Moreover, periodxiredoxin I (PRDX1) and inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor (IP3R) may be potential targets.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the anti-ovarian cancer effect of the inhibitor of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), WP1066. Western blot was used to detect the phosphorylation of STAT3 in ovarian cancer cell line SKOV3 and cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cell line SKOV3/DDP. MTT and colony-forming assays were performed to evaluate the viability and growth of ovarian cancer cells. The apoptosis of ovarian cancer cells was determined by flow cytometry. The wound healing assay and Transwell assay were performed to examine the migration and invasion of ovarian cancer cells. WP1066 significantly inhibited the phosphorylation of STAT3 in SKOV3 and SKOV3/DDP cells. WP1066 treatment inhibited the proliferation and clonogenicity of both SKOV3 and SKOV3/DDP cells. After WP1066 treatment for 24 h, the apoptosis rates of SKOV3 and SKOV3/DDP cells were significantly increased compared with the control cells. After treatment with WP1066, the reduction of the wound gaps was significantly less in both SKOV3 and SKOV3/DDP cells. WP1066 also significantly inhibited the invasion capacity of SKOV3 and SKOV3/DDP cells compared with the control group. Treatment with WP1066 combined with cisplatin significantly increased proliferation inhibition and apoptosis in SKOV3 and SKOV3/ DDP cells compared with treatment with cisplatin alone. A synergistic action between WP1066 and cisplatin on the proliferation and apoptosis of ovarian cancer cells was determined. In conclusion, inhibition of STAT3 may suppress the proliferation, migration and invasion, induce apoptosis and enhance the chemosensitivity of ovarian cancer cells, indicating that STAT3 is a new therapeutic target of ovarian cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To preliminarily study the essence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients of cold-dampness arthralgia spasm syndrome (CDASS) at the protein expression level. METHODS Totally 24 RA patients were recruited from Department of Rheumatology, Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine from July 2009 to September 2010. They were assigned to the CDASS group and the dampness-heat arthralgia spasm syndrome (DHASS) group according to Chinese medicine syndrome typing, 12 in each group. The normal control group consisted of 12 healthy volunteers from the Health Examination Center, Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. The serum proteins were compared between the CDASS group and the normal control group/the DHASS group respectively using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The common differential protein spots of CDASS were analyzed by mass spectrometry. The SwissProt database was inquired using Mascot Software to identify differential proteins. RESULTS There were 81 differential protein spots between the CDASS group and the normal control group. There were 45 differential protein spots between the CDASS group and the DHASS group. Thirteen protein spots were found to be higher or lower in protein expression quantity of the CDASS group when compared with those of the other two groups. Nine differential protein spots were identified by mass spectrometry and database retrieval. It's suggested that these proteins were most likely to be related with inhibition of cellular events, such as cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and so on. CONCLUSION 4.1 protein and DLC-1 protein were of potential significance in the diagnosis, prognostic markers, or treatment targets of RA patients of CDASS, which also provided evidence for further studies on the essence of CDASS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The feasibility of performing endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) using the Master and Slave Transluminal Endoscopic Robot (MASTER), a robotics-enhanced surgical system, has been shown in our previous study. This study aimed to further explore, in an animal survival study, the 2-week outcome of using MASTER to perform ESD. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this prospective study, ESD was performed on five female pigs (weighing 32.4 - 36.8 kg) under general anesthesia using the MASTER. The animals were observed for 2 weeks before being humanely killed for necropsy examination. The main outcome measures were completeness of resection, procedure-related complications, and survival at 2 weeks. RESULTS The procedure was successfully completed in all five pigs. It took a mean of 21.8 minutes (range 6 - 39 minutes) to complete the ESD of each gastric lesion. All lesions were excised en bloc; the average dimension of the lesions was 77 mm (range 25 - 104 mm). One pig sustained a small intraoperative perforation which was identified and successfully clipped. After completion of the ESD procedures, all pigs survived well for 2 weeks. Necropsy was performed, with intraoperative gastroscopy identifying all the ESD sites as healed. Histopathologic examination showed all ESD sites had healed with partial epithelialization. Microbiological tests of the peritoneal fluid showed only microbes typically found in pigs. CONCLUSION Performing ESD with MASTER was feasible and safe in this 2-week animal survival study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blood glucose excursion is an important component of the glycaemic burden, but there are no indexes that can directly reflect them. The aim was to evaluate the values and significance of serum 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in China and to elucidate the relationship between 1,5-AG and traditional indexes of glycaemic excursions by continuous glucose monitoring. METHODS A total of 576 healthy adults and 292 patients were included, and their 1,5-AG, fasting blood glucose and postprandial blood glucose and glycated haemoglobin were measured. For the 34 patients, their mean blood glucose, standard deviation of blood glucose, mean amplitude of glucose excursion, mean of daily differences, low blood glucose M-value index and the area under the curve for blood glucose above 180 mg/dL were calculated by use of a continuous glucose monitoring system. RESULTS Serum levels of 1,5-AG among healthy adults were 28.44 ± 8.76 µg/mL with a significant gender bias rather than age bias. The 1,5-AG levels in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus were 4.57 ± 3.71 µg/mL, which were lower than those seen in the healthy adults. There was a correlation between 1,5-AG and glycated haemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, and postprandial blood glucose (r = -0.251, -0.195 and -0.349, respectively; all had p < 0.05). The continuous glucose monitoring system demonstrated that 1,5-AG presents a negative correlation with mean blood glucose, standard deviation of blood glucose, mean amplitude of glucose excursion and mean of daily differences for 7 days and with the area under the curve for blood glucose above 180 mg/dL on the third, fourth and seventh days. CONCLUSIONS 1,5-AG may serve as a marker of hyperglycaemia and 7-day hyperglycaemic excursions as well as being a useful adjunct to glycated haemoglobin for blood glucose monitoring in patients with diabetes.

Abstract
AIM To assess whether self-monitoring of quantitative urine glucose or blood glucose is effective, convenient and safe for glycaemic control in non-insulin treated type 2 diabetes. METHODS Adults with non-insulin treated type 2 diabetes were recruited and randomized into three groups: Group A, self-monitoring with a quantitative urine glucose meter (n = 38); Group B, self monitoring with a blood glucose meter (n=35); Group C, the control group without self monitoring (n=35). All patients were followed up for six months, during which identical diabetes care was provided. RESULTS There was a significant decrease in HbA1c within each group (p < 0.05). At the study conclusion, mean changes in HbA1c from baseline were -1.9% for Group A, -1.5% for Group B and -1.0% for Group C, and the proportion of patients achieving HbA1c ≤ 6.5% were 38.9%, 35.3% and 20.0% respectively. However, no significant differences between the groups were found. The average monitoring frequency was significantly higher in Group A than in Group B. The incidence of hypoglycaemia and quality of life scores were similar between the groups. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that self-monitoring of urine glucose has comparable efficacy on glycaemic control, and facilitates better compliance than blood self monitoring, without influencing the quality of life or risk of hypoglycaemia.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate whether oridonin has antiproliferation effects against human pancreatic carcinoma SW1990 cells and to explore possible mechanisms involved.
METHODS: SW1990 cells were treated with different concentrations of oridonin. Cell proliferation was measured by MTT assay. Cell morphological changes were observed by laser confocal microscopy after double immunofluorescence staining. Cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry (FCM).
RESULTS: Treatment with oridonin significantly inhibited the growth of SW1990 cells. After treatment with oridonin, apoptosis-related morphological changes, such as condensation of chromatin and nuclear fragmentation, were observed in SW1990 cells. The fluorescence intensity of β-actin in the cytoplasm was increased, especially in the perinuclear area. The early apoptotic rates of SW1990 cells treated with 12.5, 25.0 and 50.0 µmol/L oridonin were significantly higher than those of control cells (2.17% ± 0.57%, 5.83% ± 0.57%, 4.43% ± 0.78% vs 0.30% ± 0.17%, all P < 0.05). The late apoptotic and cell necrosis rates were also significantly higher in oridonin-treated cells than in control cells (5.10% ± 0.98%, 7.03% ± 1.52%, 10.13% ± 0. 70% vs 2.63% ± 0.06%, all P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Oridonin can significantly inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis of SW1990 cells perhaps by altering β-actin depolymerization/polymerization.

Abstract
Although the flexible endoscopy has been widely used in the medical field for many years, there is still great potential in improving the endoscopist's capability to perform therapeutic tasks. Tentatively, tools for the flexible endoscope have poor maneuverability and limited Degree Of Freedom (DOF). In this paper, we propose a surgical robotic system MASTER (Master And Slave Transluminal Endoscopic Robot). MASTER is a dexterous and flexible master-slave device which can be used in tandem with a conventional flexible endoscope. Using this robotic system, ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection) and NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) have been conducted on in vivo and ex vivo animal trials with promising results.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Flexible endoscopy allows diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Simple procedures can be performed endoscopically using currently available tools. More advanced endoscopic surgical interventions are much desired and anticipated, yet they await improvements in instrumentation. METHODS Presented here is a master-slave robotic system designed for use with flexible endoscopy. The slave is a cable-driven flexible robotic manipulator that can be attached to an endoscope, allowing two-handed endoscopic manipulation with 9-12 degrees of freedom (DOF). RESULTS Feasibility has been demonstrated in a porcine intragastric model. CONCLUSIONS Further studies should determine whether this novel device can overcome some of the instrumentation-related challenges that have heretofore limited the development of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery.

Abstract
To identify new biomarkers that improve the early diagnosis and lead to possible therapeutic targets in pancreatic carcinoma, we performed a proteomic approach to compare serum protein expression patterns of pancreatic carcinoma patients with that of gastric cancer patients, other pancreatic disease patients, and healthy volunteers. By two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) analyses and mass spectroscopic identification, 10 protein spots were found significantly changed in pancreatic carcinoma and 5 proteins including cyclin I, Rab GDP dissociation inhibitor beta (GDI2), alpha-1 antitrypsin precursor, Haptoglobin precursor, and Serotransferrin precursor were successfully identified. The increased levels of cyclin I and GDI2 found to be associated with pancreatic carcinoma were further confirmed by Western blot analyses in an independent series of serum samples and/or pancreatic juice samples. Applying immunohistochemistry, we further validated expression of cyclin I and GDI2 in additional pancreatic carcinomas. These results indicate that cyclin I and GDI2 may be potential molecular targets for pancreatic cancer diagnostics and therapeutics.

Abstract
AIM To study the effect of removal of hemodialysis using acetate membrane on serum advanced glycosylation end products (AGEP) in 36 patients (59.1 +/- 1.6) with end stage renal disease (ESRD). METHODS Serum AGEP levels were determined with quantitative fluorescence spectrometry, flow injection analysis (FIA), and competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a polyclonal antibody directed against AGEP. RESULTS The serum AGEP levels in patients with ESRD quantified by fluorescence spectrometry, FIA, and ELISA were higher than those in controls [(25 +/- 5) vs (7.5 +/- 1.5), (6.1 +/- 1.8) vs (1.4 +/- 0.5), and (37 +/- 20) vs (9 +/- 10) kU/L, respectively] and markedly reduced to [(22 +/- 6), (4.2 +/- 1.4), and (19 +/- 14) kU/L, respectively] after hemodialysis. CONCLUSION Increased serum AGEP levels in the circulation of patients with ESRD were reduced effectively by hemodialysis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to characterize the molecular expression of a spontaneously immortalized and cloned cell line (MDPC-23) derived from 18-19 day CD-I fetal mouse molar dental papillae to determine if these cells were odontoblast-like. Western blots showed that a protein band, at approximately 105 kDa, reacting positively with anti-DSP antibodies and co-migrating with mouse DSP, was present in lysates of cells from passages 7, 37 and 77, in serum-free conditioned medium from passage 37 cells, and in mouse dentin extract. A minor band at 55 kDa was also apparent in cell lysates. Using a cDNA probe for a 486bp mouse DSP coding sequence, DSP or DSP-PP mRNA expression was detected by Northern analysis as well as Southern analysis after RT-PCR in all three passages. It was also shown that in these cells 1,25 (OH)2 vitamin D3 upregulated both osteopontin and osteocalcin mRNA, and dexamethasone downregulated alkaline phosphatase and alpha2(I) collagen mRNA. Thus, MDPC-23 cells express proteins which are common to mineralizing tissue. The expression of DSP and DSP-PP strongly suggests that this cell line is from the odontoblast lineage.

Abstract
Only primary pulpal cell cultures and one virally transformed mouse cell culture have been formally reported in the literature to synthesize proteins such as phosphophoryn which are unique to dentin matrix. In the present study, a mixed culture was derived from dental papilla cells of 18-19 fetal day CD-1 mouse mandibular first molars, maintained on a 3T6 plating regimen, and subsequently cloned after 28 passages. This cloned cell line (MDPC-23) exhibited several unique features, some of which were characteristic of odontoblasts in vivo. The features of this cell line included (1) epithelioid morphology of all cells with multiple cell membrane processes, (2) high alkaline phosphatase activity in all cells, (3) formation of multilayered nodules and multilayered cultures when maintained in ascorbic acid and beta-glycerophosphate, and (4) expression of two markers for odontoblast differentiation, i.e. dentin phosphoprotein and dentin sialoprotein.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that Ni-based alloys implanted into soft tissues cause an infiltration of inflammatory cells around the implant. This phenomenon is potentially important to dental alloys which are adjacent to oral tissues. To help define the mechanisms by which Ni causes an infiltration of inflammatory cells, we exposed endothelial cells in vitro to Ni ions and measured the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1). ICAM-1 is known to be involved in the recruitment of inflammatory cells from the bloodstream. We also exposed macrophages to Ni ions to test the hypothesis that Ni might alter cytokine secretion and subsequently cause expression of ICAM-1 on endothelial cells. The results showed that Ni ions could promote the expression of ICAM-1 on endothelial cells, but only at concentrations which were high enough (850 mumol/L for 24 h) to suppress cell metabolic activity. Although we had previous evidence that Ni could cause macrophages to secrete cytokines such as interleukin 1 beta, Ni-exposed macrophage supernatants did not induce expression of ICAM-1 on endothelial cells at concentrations subtoxic to the macrophages (85 mumol/L). At subtoxic concentrations, Ni ions were able to suppress ICAM-1 expression on endothelial cells which were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. Thus, Ni ions either promoted or suppressed the expression of ICAM-1 depending on their concentration. This dual action of Ni ions may be important in vivo where a gradient of concentrations of released ions is likely to exist around the implanted biomaterial. Further studies are necessary to determine the effect of time of exposure and the molecular mechanisms of increased ICAM-1 expression.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of metal ions, which may be released from orthopedic or dental implants, on osteoblast metabolism and differentiation. ROS 17/2.8 cells were cultured in F-12 medium for 7 days. Then Al+3, Co+2, Cr+3, Ni+2, Ti+4, and V+3 were added at concentrations less than their cytotoxic concentrations. After 3 days, DNA synthesis, succinate dehydrogenase activity, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and culture calcification were assessed. Northern blots were performed for ALP, osteocalcin (OCN), and osteopontin (OPN) mRNA transcription. The data indicated that Cr+3 and A1+3 had few inhibitory effects on ROS cell metabolism below their cytotoxic concentrations, Ni+2, Co+2, Ti+4, and V+3 affected all these parameters of ROS cell metabolism at concentrations below cytotoxic levels. For RNA analysis, A1+3 significantly suppressed the expression of ALP, OCN, and OPN at both cytotoxic and noncytoxic concentrations. Co+2 specifically suppressed ALP expression at cytotoxic concentrations. Cr+3 and Ni+2 inhibited OCN, OPN, and ALP gene expression only at cytotoxic concentrations. For Ti+4 and V+3 ions, gene expression at cytotoxic levels was not significantly affected as compared with the effects at noncytotoxic level. These results show that metal ions may alter osteoblast behavior even at subtoxic concentrations, but do not always affect the expression of all genes similarly.

Abstract
Southern blot studies on Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA integration in 13 human hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) patients revealed the presence of several distinct HBV integration sites in different human liver disease patients. In one HCC patient the DNA fragment containing the HBV integration also hybridized to an erb B probe. The erb B/HBV co-migrating DNA fragment was cloned and sequenced, and showed that HBV DNA is integrated next to a cellular DNA fragment which is homologous to the tyrosine protein kinase domain of the human epidermal growth factor receptor gene and other cell surface receptor genes. The virus-integrated cellular DNA sequence is expressed in this HCC patient, suggesting a possible role for this gene in hepatocarcinogenesis.

Abstract
The tongue coating cells were stained by Alpha-naphthol acetate esterase and naphthol AS-D chloroacetate esterase in 100 patients with different symptom-complex [five groups: dampheat, damp-heat due to blood stasis, Yin deficiency, Yang deficiency and Qi-blood deficiency] in view of TCM, and in 116 healthy persons. The responses of the epithelial cells of the tongue and the leukocytes to the two esterase stainings were observed. The results were: the number of nonspecific esterase was much higher in the patients, especially in the patients with Yin or Qi-blood deficiency, than that in the healthy persons (P less than 0.001); responses to ASDCE suggested that the leukocytes of the patients were different from those of the healthy persons in classification, more granulocytes in the healthy persons, and increased proportion of monocytes and lymphocytes in the patients, the most increased proportion of monocytes in the patients with Qi-blood deficiency and the most increased proportion of lymphocytes in the patients with Yang deficiency. The mechanisms of the different responses to the two esterase stainings in the patients and healthy persons, and the relationship between these mechanisms and the symptom-complexes by TCM were discussed.

Abstract
Water and sodium loading tests were undertaken in 27 cases of cor pulmonale with acute exacerbation. The results showed that ratio of 2 hour urine volume versus water load was 23- +/- 1.38% in respiratory failure (RF) group (17 cases), which was significantly lower than that of non-RF group (10 cases) 51.3 +/- 4.17%, (P less than 0.01) and control group (7 cases) 57.4 +/- 6.54%, (P less than 0.01); ratio of 4-hour urine sodium versus sodium load was 12.0 +/- 1.48% in RF group, which was also lower than that of non-RF group (29.6 +/- 1.93%, P less than 0.01) and control group (30.4 +/- 2.42%, P less than 0.01). It was suggested that excretions of water and sodium decreased in RF group. The incidences of hyponatremia and hyposmosemia were 47.1% and 64.7% respectively in RF group in 6 cases of RF with edema, the excretions of water and sodium increased after oxygen treatment. The mechanism and the clinical significance of hyponatremia and hyposmosemia and of impaired excretions of water and sodium in RF patients were discussed preliminarily. It is concluded that hypoxemia is one of the important causes of the disturbance in water and sodium metabolism.
