Abstract
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reference ranges for ventricular morphology and function in the Chinese population are lacking. PURPOSE To establish the MRI reference ranges of left and right ventricular (LV and RV) morphology and function based on a large multicenter cohort. STUDY TYPE Prospective. POPULATION One thousand and twelve healthy Chinese Han adults. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE Balanced steady-state free procession cine sequence at 3.0 T. ASSESSMENT Biventricular end-diastolic, end-systolic, stroke volume, and ejection fraction (EDV, ESV, SV, and EF), LV mass (LVM), end-diastolic and end-systolic dimension (LVEDD and LVESD), anteroseptal wall thickness (AS), and posterolateral wall thickness (PL) were measured. Body surface area (BSA) and height were used to index biventricular parameters. Parameters were compared between age groups and sex. STATISTICAL TESTS Independent-samples t-tests or Mann-Whitney U test to compare mean values between sexes; ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test to compare mean values among age groups; linear regression to assess the relationships between cardiac parameters and age (correlation coefficient, r). A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS The biventricular volumes, LVM, LVEDD, RVEDV/LVEDV ratio, LVESD, AS, and PL were significantly greater in males than in females, even after indexing to BSA or height, while LVEF and RVEF were significantly lower in males than in females. For both sexes, age was significantly negatively correlated with biventricular volumes (male and female: LVEDV [r = -0.491; r = -0.373], LVESV [r = -0.194; r = -0.184], RVEDV [r = -0.639; r = -0.506], RVESV [r = -0.270; r = -0.223]), with similar correlations after BSA normalization. LVEF (r = 0.043) and RVEF (r = 0.033) showed a significant correlation with age in females, but not in males (P = 0.889; P = 0.282). DATA CONCLUSION MRI reference ranges for biventricular morphology and function in Chinese adults are presented and show significant associations with age and sex. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex-specific differences in coronary phenotypes in response to stress have not been elucidated. This study investigated the sex-specific differences in the coronary computed tomography angiography-assessed coronary response to mental stress. METHODS This retrospective study included patients with coronary artery disease and without cancer who underwent resting 18F-fluorodexoyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography and coronary computed tomography angiography within 3 months. 18F-flourodeoxyglucose resting amygdalar uptake, an imaging biomarker of stress-related neural activity, coronary inflammation (fat attenuation index), and high-risk plaque characteristics were assessed by coronary computed tomography angiography. Their correlation and prognostic values were assessed according to sex. RESULTS A total of 364 participants (27.7% women and 72.3% men) were enrolled. Among those with heightened stress-related neural activity, women were more likely to have a higher fat attenuation index (43.0% versus 24.0%; P=0.004), while men had a higher frequency of high-risk plaques (53.7% versus 39.3%; P=0.036). High amygdalar 18F-flourodeoxyglucose uptake (B-coefficient [SE], 3.62 [0.21]; P<0.001) was selected as the strongest predictor of fat attenuation index in a fully adjusted linear regression model in women, and the first-order interaction term consisting of sex and stress-related neural activity was significant (P<0.001). Those with enhanced imaging biomarkers of stress-related neural activity showed increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular event both in women (24.5% versus 5.1%; adjusted hazard ratio, 3.62 [95% CI, 1.14-17.14]; P=0.039) and men (17.2% versus 6.9%; adjusted hazard ratio, 2.72 [95% CI, 1.10-6.69]; P=0.030). CONCLUSIONS Imaging-assessed stress-related neural activity carried prognostic values irrespective of sex; however, a sex-specific mechanism linking psychological stress to coronary plaque phenotypes existed in the current hypothesis-generating study. Abstract
BACKGROUND The risk stratification of left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) remains ambiguous. LV entropy derived from late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) as a novel measurement of myocardial heterogeneity may serve as the substrate of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). This retrospective study aimed to investigate the value of LV entropy for predicting MACEs in LVNC patients. METHODS Consecutive patients who underwent CMR and met the diagnosis criteria of LVNC were included. All patients were follow-up for MACEs (cardiac death, ventricular arrhythmia requiring therapy or heart failure hospitalization), and their LV entropy derived from the distribution of pixel signal intensities in the LGE of the LV myocardium was analyzed. RESULTS One hundred and forty-three patients (mean age 40 years, 64.3% male) were followed for a median of 3.2 years, and forty-two (29.4%) experienced MACEs. Presenting of symptoms, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) index, LV end-systolic volume (LVESV) index, LV ejection fraction (LVEF), LGE extent, and LV entropy showed association with MACEs. LV entropy maintained independent association with MACEs (HR: 4.76, 95%CI 3.68-5.15, p < 0.001) in multivariable analysis. Entropy was also strong independent predictor of MACEs in patients with and without LGE (HR: 5.89, 95% CI4.18-7.73, p < 0.001; HR: 3.06, 95% CI:1.53-4.80, p = 0.013, respectively). CONCLUSIONS LV entropy can predict MACEs in LVNC patients and provide incremental prognostic value on top of LVEF and LGE. Also, LV entropy may help risk stratification in LGE-negative LVNC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although reference ranges of T1 and T2 mapping are well established for cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) at 1.5T, data for 3T are still lacking. The objective of this study is to establish reference ranges of myocardial T1 and T2 based on a large multicenter cohort of healthy Chinese adults at 3T CMR. METHODS A total of 1015 healthy Chinese adults (515 men, age range: 19-87 years) from 11 medical centers who underwent CMR using 3T Siemens scanners were prospectively enrolled. T1 mapping was performed with a motion-corrected modified Look-Locker inversion recovery sequence using a 5(3)3 scheme. T2 mapping images were acquired using T2-prepared fast low-angle shot sequence. T1 and T2 relaxation times were quantified for each slice and each myocardial segment. The T1 mapping and extracellular volume standardization (T1MES) phantom was used for quality assurance at each center prior to subject scanning. RESULTS The phantom analysis showed strong consistency of spin echo, T1 mapping, and T2 mapping among centers. In the entire cohort, global T1 and T2 reference values were 1193 ± 34 ms and 36 ± 2.5 ms. Global T1 and T2 values were higher in females than in males (T1: 1211 ± 29 ms vs. 1176 ± 30 ms, p < 0.001; T2: 37 ± 2.3 ms vs. 35 ± 2.5 ms, p < 0.001). There were statistical differences in global T2 across age groups (p < 0.001), but not in global T1. Linear regression showed no correlation between age and global T1 or T2 values. In males, positive correlation was found between heart rate and global T1 (r = 0.479, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Using phantom-validated imaging sequences, we provide reference ranges for myocardial T1 and T2 values on 3T scanners in healthy Chinese adults, which can be applied across participating sites. Abstract
BACKGROUND Stress-related neural activity (SNA) assessed by amygdalar activity can predict cardiovascular events. However, its mechanistic linkage with plaque vulnerability is not fully elucidated. OBJECTIVES The authors aimed to investigate the association of SNA with coronary plaque morphologic and inflammatory features as well as their ability in predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). METHODS A total of 299 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and without cancer underwent 18F-fluorodexoyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and available coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2020. SNA and bone-marrow activity (BMA) were assessed with validated methods. Coronary inflammation (fat attenuation index [FAI]) and high-risk plaque (HRP) characteristics were assessed by CCTA. Relations between these features were analyzed. Relations between SNA and MACE were assessed with Cox models, log-rank tests, and mediation (path) analyses. RESULTS SNA was significant correlated with BMA (r = 0.39; P < 0.001) and FAI (r = 0.49; P < 0.001). Patients with heightened SNA are more likely to have HRP (40.7% vs 23.5%; P = 0.002) and increase risk of MACE (17.2% vs 5.1%, adjusted HR 3.22; 95% CI: 1.31-7.93; P = 0.011). Mediation analysis suggested that higher SNA associates with MACE via a serial mechanism involving BMA, FAI, and HRP. CONCLUSIONS SNA is significantly correlated with FAI and HRP in patients with CAD. Furthermore, such neural activity was associated with MACE, which was mediated in part by leukopoietic activity in the bone marrow, coronary inflammation, and plaque vulnerability.

Abstract
Background The pericoronary fat attenuation index (FAI) is a novel imaging biomarker of coronary inflammation, which is closely related to development and progression of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, there are limited reports on whether elevated pericoronary FAI values from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) were associated with plaque parameters and coronary stenosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We aimed to assessed that FAI helps to identify high risk of CAD. Methods The clinical diagnosis confirmed to the American Heart Association guidelines for ACS. The lesion-specific pericoronary FAI and plague parameters were measured using QAngioCT software. Using a Hounsfield unit (HU) of -70.1 as the threshold value, lesions with a lesion-specific pericoronary FAI value ≥-70.1 HU were allocated to the FAI-positive group and those with a FAI value <-70.1 HU were allocated to the FAI-negative group. The patients were divided into four stenosis groups according to the coronary angiography (CAG) results, and differences in the FAI values among the four groups were analyzed. Results A retrospective analysis of 127 ACS patients, including 299 lesions, who underwent CCTA and CAG successively was conducted. The prevalence of vulnerable plaques increased significantly in the FAI-positive group (49.35% vs. 23.87%, P<0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) of FAI in the diagnosis of vulnerable plagues was 0.810. Plaques were closer to the coronary ostium [3.32 (2.83, 4.29) vs. 4.17 (3.33, 4.95) cm, P<0.001] and more often located in the bifurcated segments of the vessels (50.65% vs. 32.43%, P=0.004) in the FAI-positive group than the FAI-negative group. The FAI-positive group also had a higher percentage of diameter stenosis than the FAI-negative group [80.00% (65.00%, 90.00%) vs. 60.00% (40.00%, 85.00%), P<0.001]. FAI values were higher in stenoses with a diameter ≥50% than stenoses with a diameter <50%. Conclusions The FAI was identified as a novel imaging biomarker of coronary inflammation that is correlated with vulnerable plaque features and stenosis severity.

Abstract
Aims Chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is characterized by a low success rate and an increase in complications. This study aimed to explore a new and simple classification method based on plaque composition to predict guidewire (GW) crossing within 30 min of CTO lesions. Methods This study consecutively enrolled individuals undergoing attempted PCI of CTO who underwent coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) within 2 months. Lesions were divided into soft and hard CTO groups according to the necrotic core proportion. Results In this study, 207 lesions were divided into soft (20.3%) and hard CTO (79.7%) groups according to a necrotic core percentage cutoff value of 72.7%. The rate of successful GW crossing within 30 min (57.6 vs. 85.7%, p = 0.004) and final success (73.3 vs. 95.2%, p = 0.001) were much lower in the hard CTO group. For patients with hard CTO, previous failed attempt, proximal side branch, bending > 45 degrees calcium ≥ 50% cross-sectional area (CSA), and distal reference diameter ≤ 2.5 mm were demonstrated to be associated with GW failure within 30 min. For patients with soft CTO, only blunt entry was proved to be an independent predictive factor of GW failure within 30 min. Conclusions Grouping CTO lesions according to the proportion of necrotic core is reasonable and necessary in predicting GW crossing within 30 min. A soft CTO with a necrotic core is more likely to be recanalized compared with a hard CTO with fibrous and/or dense calcium. Different plaque types have variable predictive factors.

Abstract
1.The role of acetate in lipogenesis of chickens remains largely unknown. This trial investigated the effect of sodium acetate (SA) on chicken fat metabolism via in vivo and in vitro experiments.2.The results indicated that supplementation of SA (1.0 g/kg feed) showed marginal to moderate stimulation on the area of the abdominal fat cells and triglyceride (TG) content in liver and adipose tissues. It increased the transcription of some genes involved in fat synthesis and deposition, but did not affect free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2) expression in either liver or abdominal fat.3. In cultured hepatocytes treated with 0.01 mM to 5 mM SA, although mRNA levels of ACC1, PPAR, SREBP-1 c, and FFAR2 were upregulated with SA at certain concentrations, TG content and protein expression of lipogenic genes and FFAR2 were not altered at any dosages. In adipogenic differentiation of preadipocytes, high concentrations of SA (5 mM) exhibited significant increments in TG content and accumulated fat droplets, associated with stimulated transcription of FAS, LPL, AD, FABP4, and FFAR2, as well as elevated protein expression of FABP4 and FFAR2.4. The results showed that adipocytes were more sensitive to acetate than hepatocytes in chickens. While acetate played a minor role in hepatic fat metabolism, it promoted lipogenesis in adipocytes via FFAR2 with the involvement of FAS, LPL, and FABP4.

Abstract
Background Computed tomography feature tracking (CT-FT) has emerged as a valuable method for the assessment of cardiac function. However, no studies have investigated the usefulness of CT-derived assessments of left ventricular (LV) strain in coronary artery disease (CAD). Our aim was to evaluate regional LV systolic deformation in patients with left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) stenosis using CT-FT. Methods Seventy-six patients with LAD stenosis were enrolled. The patients were divided into four groups according to the percentage of LAD stenosis: ≤25% was defined as group I (24 patients), 26 to 49% as group II (17 patients), 50 to 74% as group III (21 patients), and ≥ 75% as group IV (14 patients). Thirty-two sex- and age-matched healthy subjects were included as controls. Results No intergroup differences were found between groups I-IV and the controls in terms of the left ventricular ejection fraction, end-diastolic volume and end-systolic volume. However, the longitudinal strain (LS) of the LAD territory was significantly reduced in groups I-IV compared with the controls (− 20.8, − 18.6%, − 18.6%, and − 17.0% vs − 23.7%, respectively). The circumferential strain (CS) of the LAD territory was significantly reduced in groups III and IV compared with the controls and groups I and II (− 22.4% and − 22.1% vs − 25.4, − 24.1%, and − 25.3%, respectively). Compared with the non-LAD territory, the LAD territory in groups II-IV showed significantly increased LS (− 18.6% vs − 21.9%, p = 0.07; − 18.6% vs − 21.9%, p = 0.024; − 17.5% vs − 20%, p = 0.032, respectively). The severity of LAD stenosis was positively correlated with the LS of the LAD territory (r = 0.438, p = 0.002). Conclusion CT-FT can detect decreasing LV systolic function in patients with LAD stenosis. LV regional systolic deformation of the LAD territory was reduced with increasing LAD stenosis severity.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) characteristics of high-risk plaque (HRP) in moderate stenosis to improve differentiation of myocardial ischemia detected by stress CT perfusion (CTP) imaging. Material/Methods Sixty-two patients with coronary plaques and moderate stenosis confirmed by invasive coronary angiography (ICA) had stress CTP and 26 of these patients were found to have myocardial ischemia. The other 36 patients without myocardial ischemia were defined as controls. Characteristics of major plaques on CCTA images of the ischemia and non-ischemia groups were analyzed and compared. Results Differences between the 2 groups were observed in plaque volume, burden and rough inner surface necrotic core volume, plaque-lipid interface and plaque length. In a multivariable analysis, plaque burden and necrotic core volume were significantly associated with myocardial ischemia: plaque burden odds ratio (OR) was 1.28 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12–1.48); necrotic core volume OR was 1.78 (95% CI, 1.03–1.34). Compared with other quantitative measurements, optimized thresholds for plaque burden (area under the curve was 0.852) and necrotic core volume (area under the curve was 0.730) showed significantly higher diagnostic performance for ischemia with threshold values of 60.8% and 11.25 mm3, respectively. Conclusions CCTA characteristics of major plaques may improve the discrimination of ACS patients with myocardial ischemia on stress CTP.

METHODS In all, 3082 ischaemic stroke patients were included in this study and serum galectin-3 was tested at baseline. The primary outcome was a composite outcome of death and vascular events, and secondary outcomes were death, stroke recurrence and vascular events within 1 year after stroke. RESULTS Increased galectin-3 was significantly associated with the primary outcome, stroke recurrence and vascular events in the patients with hyperglycemia but not in those with normoglycemia (P for interaction < 0.05 for all). The multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.72 (1.05-2.84), 2.64 (1.14-6.12) and 2.68 (1.33-5.38) for the primary outcome, stroke recurrence and vascular events, respectively. A linear association between galectin-3 and the primary outcome was observed in hyperglycemic patients (P for linearity = 0.007). CONCLUSION Increased galectin-3 was associated with the primary outcome, stroke recurrence and vascular events within 1 year after stroke in the patients with hyperglycemia, suggesting that galectin-3 may be an important prognostic factor for ischaemic stroke patients with hyperglycemia.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, requiring the development of new therapeutic strategies including stem cell therapy. Pentraxins (PTXs) are a superfamily of proteins highly involved in different myocardial disorders, and thus this study aimed to identify the modulation of long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) in the differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) toward cardiomyocytes. Cell toxicity of PTX3 was detected by MTT and LDH assays in mESCs. Embryoid bodies (EBs) were differentiated using hanging drop method, and the beating was observed under microscope. Expressional levels of early cardiac progenitor marker genes were assessed by qRT-PCR. Expression of marker proteins in early myocardial development and the activation of JNK signaling pathway was evaluated by Western blot. PTX3 treatment at 50 ng/mL significantly promoted the expression of cardiac-specific marker genes including Nkx2.5, Mef2c, Tbx5, dHand, and αMHC, and increased the expression of cardiac maturity indicative markers including connexin 43 and troponin C1. PTX3 enhanced the phosphorylation of JNK across the incubation duration, whereas the activation of p38 remained the same as control group. Co-treatment of JNK signaling pathway inhibitor SP600125 impaired the PTX3-promoted transcription of Nkx2.5, Mef2c, Tbx5, dHand, and αMHC. This study revealed the promotion of PTX3 in the differentiation of mESCs into cardiomyocytes and the underlying mechanism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Current observational studies indicate that a lower vitamin D level is associated with a higher risk of poor ischaemic stroke prognosis. Whether this association is affected by lipid levels is unclear. Our aim was to examine the effect of serum vitamin D especially its deficiency on the global outcome of ischaemic stroke stratified by individual lipid component level. METHODS A total of 3181 ischaemic patients from China Antihypertensive Trial in Acute Ischaemic Stroke were included in this study and their baseline serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were tested. They were prospectively followed up for death, major disability and vascular events for 3 months after acute ischaemic stroke. A multivariable logistic model was used to evaluate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and clinical outcomes of ischaemic stroke in the 3-month period of follow-up in all patients and in different lipid-level subgroups. RESULTS Vitamin D deficiency was associated with poor clinical outcomes only in ischaemic stroke patients with high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) <1.04 mmol/l rather than all patients. The multivariable adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of major disability and composite adverse events were 1.98 (1.08-3.63) and 2.24 (1.22-4.12), respectively. There was a significant interaction effect between vitamin D and HDLC levels on major disability and the composite outcome (P for interaction < 0.05 for both). A significant linear trend existed between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and risk of poor prognosis (P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D deficiency may be merely an independent risk factor of poor prognosis in ischaemic stroke patients with low HDLC level.

Abstract
Katanin p60 subunit A-like 1 (KATNAL1) is an ATPase that regulates Sertoli cell microtubule dynamics and sperm retention. We evaluated one novel splice variant and characterized the promoter and a functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the bovine KATNAL1 gene to explore its expression pattern, possible regulatory mechanism and relationship with semen traits in Chinese Holstein bulls. A novel splice variant, KATNAL1 transcript variant 2 (KATNAL1-TV2) of the retained 68 bp in intron 2, was identified by RT-PCR and compared with KATNAL1 transcript variant 1 (KATNAL1-TV1, NM 001192918.1) in various tissues. Bioinformatics analyses predicted that KATNAL1 transcription was regulated by two promoters: P1 in KATNAL1-TV1 and P2 in KATNAL1-TV2. Results of qRT-PCR revealed that KATNAL1-TV1 had higher expression than did KATNAL1-TV2 in testes of adult bulls (P < 0.05). Promoter luciferase activity analysis suggested that the core sequences of P1 and P2 were mapped to the region of c.-575˜c.-180 and c.163-40˜c.333+59 respectively. One novel SNP (c.163-210T>C, ss836312085) located in intron 1 was found using sequence alignment. The SNP in P2 resulted in the presence of the DeltaE binding site, improving its basal promoter activity (P < 0.05); and we observed a greater sperm deformity rate in bulls with the genotype CC than in those with the genotype TT (P < 0.05), which indicated that different genotypes were associated with the bovine semen traits. Bioinformatics analysis of the KATNAL1 protein sequence predicted that the loss of the MIT domain in the KATNAL1-TV2 transcript resulted in protein dysfunction. These findings help us to understand that a functional SNP in P2 and subsequent triggering of expression diversity of KATNAL1 transcripts are likely to play an important role with regard to semen traits in bull breeding programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the value of multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of pancreatic mucinous cystic neoplasms and serous cystadenoma. METHOD The MSCT images were reviewed for 19 pathologically confirmed cases of pancreatic mucinous cystadenomas and 13 cases of pancreatic serous cystadenomas (n=13) treated in our center between July, 2003 and December, 2009. The CT features were analyzed including the tumor location, contour, dimension of the largest cyst, cystic wall, septation, presence of calcification, solid component, pancreatic atrophy, main pancreatic duct dilatation, and lesion margins. RESULTS Significant differences were found between the two groups in lesion diameter (P=0.009), cyst distribution of the largest cyst (>2 cm) (P=0.01), and the presence of solid component (P=0.02). CONCLUSION MSCT can be of important value in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of pancreatic mucinous cystic neoplasms and serous cystadenomas.

Abstract
Cell cycle checkpoints induced by telomere dysfunction represent one of the major in vivo tumor suppressor mechanisms preventing cancer but at the same time provoking age dependent decline in self-renewal and regeneration of tissues and organs. On the other hand, telomere shortening contributes to the initiation of cancer by inducing chromosomal instability. Telomere function and telomerase activity are mainly associated with actively proliferating cells. Since stem cells are continuously proliferating throughout lifetime, it is of great interest to explore the role of telomeres and telomerase in stem cells. Although most stem cell compartments express telomerase, the level of telomerase activity is not sufficient to maintain telomere length of stem cells during aging. Stem cells appear to have tighter DNAdamage checkpoint control in comparison to somatic cells, which may reflect the need to protect this long lasting cell compartment against malignant transformation. These enhanced checkpoint responses may have a detrimental impact on stem cell function, by causing increased sensitivity towards senescence or apoptosis induced by telomere shortening. This review summarizes our knowledge on telomere dynamics and its functional impact on stem cells during aging and transformation.

Abstract
Telomeres form the ends of human chromosomes. Telomeres shorten with each round of cell division and this mechanism limits proliferation of human cells to a finite number of cell divisions by inducing replicative senescence, differentiation, or apoptosis. Telomere shortening can act as a tumor suppressor. However, as a downside, there is growing evidence indicating that telomere shortening also limits stem cell function, regeneration, and organ maintenance during ageing. Moreover, telomere shortening during ageing and disease is associated with increasing cancer risk. In this review we summarize our current knowledge on the role of telomere shortening in human ageing, chronic diseases, and cancer.

Abstract
Paraquat (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium; methylviologen) is a widely used, nonselective contact herbicide that rapidly stimulates free radical generation. It has been found that the addition of sodium salicylate (sodium 2-hydroxybenzoate; NaSA) to paraquat spray solutions significantly decreased herbicidal activity. This protection was observed in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) regardless of whether NaSA was foliar-applied along with or prior to paraquat application or NaSA was soil-applied prior to paraquat application. Because salicylic acid (SA) is an inducer of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) to plant disease, paraquat protection by three SAR inducers (acibenzolar-S-methyl, harpin, and probenazole) and selected salicylate derivatives was assessed. Twenty-two of 24 compounds tested decreased herbicidal activity when foliar-applied with paraquat. Protection from paraquat was greatest with 5-chlorosalicylate, and no protection was observed with benzoic acid. NaSA decreased paraquat activity on npr1-2, an Arabidopsis mutant that is compromised in NaSA-induced SAR, and on ein2-1, an ethylene-insensitive Arabidopsis mutant. Thus, salicylate protection from paraquat is independent of disease resistance and ethylene perception. This suggests the existence of an NaSA-mediated pathway capable of protecting plants from reactive oxygen stress.

Abstract
Atrazine [6-chloro-N-ethyl-N'-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine] inhibits photosystem II (PSII) and is commonly used to control weeds in maize. It has been found that addition of sodium salicylate (sodium 2-hydroxybenzoate; NaSA) increased the postemergence herbicidal activity of atrazine against dicotyledonous weeds. NaSA also potentiated the activity of bentazon, another PSII-inhibiting herbicide. NaSA increased atrazine activity when applied either as a tank mix or up to 96 h prior to atrazine application. Other salicylates and the plant disease resistance inducers acibenzolar-S-methyl [benzo-(1,2,3)-thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid S-methyl ester] and 2,6-dichloroisonicotinic acid also increased atrazine activity. Among the compounds tested, 3-chloro-5-fluorosalicylate, 4-chlorosalicylate, or 2,6-dichloroisonicotinic acid combined with atrazine yielded the greatest increase in herbicidal activity. Potentiation of atrazine by NaSA was greater at higher temperatures (35 and 25 > 15 degrees C). Also, greater potentiation was observed as the light level decreased. In darkness, NaSA alone or in combination with atrazine caused plant death, whereas atrazine alone had little effect. NaSA increased atrazine activity on npr1-2, an Arabidopsis mutant compromised in SA-induced disease resistance. Atrazine activity was also potentiated by NaSA on the ethylene insensitive mutant ein2-1. This indicates that atrazine potentiation is independent of either salicylate-induced disease resistance or ethylene perception.

Abstract
To identify the molecular changes that occur in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), we compared the gene expression profile of the NCI-H292 (H292) NSCLC cell line with that of normal human tracheobronchial epithelial (NHTBE) cells. The NHTBE cells were grown in a three-dimensional organotypic culture system that permits maintenance of the normal pseudostratified mucociliary phenotype characteristic of bronchial epithelium in vivo. Microarray analysis using the Affymetrix oligonucleotide chip U95Av2 revealed that 1,683 genes showed a >1.5-fold change in expression in the H292 cell line relative to the NHTBE cells. Specifically, 418 genes were downregulated and 1,265 were upregulated in the H292 cells. The expression data for selected genes were validated in several different NSCLC cell lines using quantitative real-time PCR and Western analysis. Further analysis of the differentially expressed genes indicated that WNT responses, apoptosis, cell cycle regulation and cell proliferation were significantly altered in the H292 cells. Functional analysis using fluorescence-activated cell sorting confirmed concurrent changes in the activity of these pathways in the H292 line. These findings show that (1) NSCLC cells display deregulation of the WNT, apoptosis, proliferation and cell cycle pathways, as has been found in many other types of cancer cells, and (2) that organotypically cultured NHTBE cells can be used as a reference to identify genes and pathways that are differentially expressed in tumor cells derived from bronchogenic epithelium.

Abstract
Aquatic ectotherms can adapt to a wide range of temperature changes, but the molecular mechanisms that underlie this adaptability are not well understood. We identified genes that are differentially expressed in the catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus) brain using a cDNA microarray approach to gain an initial understanding of adaptation to low temperature. Among 660 genes analyzed, 61 were differentially expressed when compared at 12 degrees C and 24 degrees C. Gene induction was rapid, occurring within 2 h of the temperature shift. The major categories of differentially expressed genes included (1) genes for chaperones such as Hsp70 and Hsp70/Hsp90 organizing protein; (2) genes for transcription factors and gene products involved in signal transduction pathways such as zinc-finger proteins, calmodulin kinase inhibitor, the nuclear autoantigen SG2NA, interferon regulatory factor 3, and inorganic pyrophosphatase; (3) genes involved in lipid metabolism such as TB2 and acyl CoA binding protein; and (4) genes involved in the translational machinery such as ribosomal proteins. Some genes were induced transiently, whereas others were induced in an enduring fashion. Several genes, primarily ribosomal protein genes, were down regulated, indicating reduced metabolic activities after extended incubation at the low temperature. Thus channel catfish respond to low temperature by adjusting expression of a large number of genes. The rapid induction of proteins involved in signal transductions and chaperones suggests that both de novo synthesis of cold-induced proteins and modification of existing proteins are required for adaptation and tolerance of catfish to low environmental temperature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study lumbar vertebral degenerations of coal miners with low back pain. METHODS 40 underground miners with low back pain, aged from 30 to 50 years and employed for a length from 10 to 30 years, were taken as observation group. 30 ground workers without low back pain but with almost the same age, employment length and height etc. were selected as control group. Intervertebral discs at L3/L4, L4/L5, L5/S1 were scanned with computerized tomography, comparing herniated discs, sagittal diameter of vertebral canal, height of lateral recess, vertebral hypertostosis, ligament hypertrophy and calcification between two groups. RESULTS L3/L4, L4/L5, L5/S1 herniated discs and narrow lateral recess in observation group(0.33 +/- 0.15, 0.53 +/- 0.25, 0.45 +/- 0.18 and 0.40 +/- 0.08, 0.31 +/- 0.05, 0.37 +/- 0.07) were more serious than that in control group(0.28 +/- 0.11, 0.32 +/- 0.21, 0.37 +/- 0.19 and 0.42 +/- 0.10, 0.43 +/- 0.07, 0.40 +/- 0.06), but only with significant difference at L4/L5 (P < 0.01). Sagittal diameter of vertebral canal in observation group is narrower than that in control group but of little significance(P > 0.05). Cases of vertebral hyperostosis, ligament hypertrophy and calcification were found more frequent in observation group(45.00%, 42.50%, 22.50%) than in control group(23.33%, 16.67%, 16.67%), but only ligament hypertrophy was remarkable(P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS As compared with control group lumbar vertebral degenerations are more serious in underground miners with manifestations like herniated disc and narrow lateral recess mainly at L4/L5.

Expansion of trinucleotide repeats within genes is well known to cause pathological conditions in humans. Here we report a large number of genes containing simple sequence repeats (SSR) from the brain of channel catfish, of which a homologue of the RAD23B gene was found to include (CCA) trinucleotide repeats within its coding region. Because of the importance of the RAD23B gene in the nucleotide excision repair (NER) system, the catfish RAD23B locus was further characterized. The (ACC) repeats encode a polythreonine (T) tract within the catfish RAD23B gene that is absent from the previously cloned human and mouse genes. A survey of the allele variation at the locus indicated the existence of variable microsatellite repeats in the NER RAD23B gene, suggesting that the trinucleotide repeats are expanding or shrinking. The majority of individuals harbor 10 (ACC) repeats within the RAD23B gene, but alleles with 8 and 11 repeats were also detected. The (ACC) repeats are limited to only channel catfish and the closely related blue catfish, but are absent from flathead catfish and the cloned human and mouse genes, suggesting that the microsatellite invasion into the RAD23B gene is a recent event in evolution.

Abstract
Analysis of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) is an efficient approach for gene discovery, expression profiling, and development of resources useful for functional genomics studies. As part of the transcriptome analysis in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), we have conducted EST analysis using a cDNA library made from the head kidney. We analysed 2228 EST clones. Orthologues were established for 1495 (67.1%) clones representing 748 genes, of which 545 (36.5%) clones were singletons. The remaining 733 (32.9%) clones represent unknown gene clones, for which the number of genes has not yet been determined.

Abstract
Expressed sequence tag (EST) analysis was conducted using a complementary DNA (cDNA) library made from the brain mRNA of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). As part of our transcriptome analysis in catfish to develop molecular reagents for comparative functional genomics, here we report analysis of 1201 brain cDNA clones. Of the 1201 clones, 595 clones (49.5%) were identified as known genes by BLAST searches and 606 clones (50.5%) as unknown genes. The 595 clones of known gene products represent transcripts of 251 genes. These known genes were categorized into 15 groups according to their biological functions. The largest group of known genes was the genes involved in translational machinery (21.4%) followed by mitochondrial genes (6.2%), structural genes (3.1%), genes homologous to sequences of unknown functions (2.3%), enzymes (2.7%), hormone and regulatory proteins (2.5%), genes involved in immune systems (2.1%), genes involved in sorting, transport, and metal metabolism (1.8%), transcriptional factors and DNA repair proteins (1.6%), proto-oncogenes (1.2%), lipid binding proteins (1.2%), stress-induced genes (0.7%), genes homologous to human genes involved in mental diseases (0.6%), and development or differentiation-related genes (0.3%). The number of genes represented by the 606 clones of unknown genes is not known at present, but the high percentage of clones showing no homology to any known genes in the GenBank databases may indicate that a great number of novel genes exist in teleost brain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the function of Th1 (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha) and Th2 (IL-4, IL-10) cytokine balance in the maternal-fetal tolerance. METHODS The IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-4 and IL-10 mRNA were studied from PBMCs of 11 normal non-pregnancy control, 10 women in first trimester of normal pregnancy, 11 women in last trimester of normal pregnancy by semi-quantitative reverse transcriptional-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. RESULTS (1) The IFN-gamma mRNA decreased [(24.68 +/- 5.55)%, P < 0.05], while the IL-10 mRNA rose [(20.72 +/- 5.36)%, P < 0.01] in normal pregnancy women compared with the non-pregnancy control [IFN-gamma(30.76 +/- 5.35)%, IL-10 (13.58 +/- 3.91)%]. (2) IL-10 mRNA decreased [(9.48 +/- 2.84)%, P < 0.05], while the IFN-gamma mRNA rose [(36.08 +/- 5.75)%, P < 0.05] in RSA women compared with the non-pregnancy control. (3) The IFN-gamma mRNA rose (P < 0.01), while the IL-10 mRNA decreased (P < 0.01) in RSA women compared with women in their first trimester of normal pregnancy [IFN-gamma(27.23 +/- 5.74)%, IL-10 (18.61 +/- 5.43)%]. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that women in normal pregnancy had mainly the Th2 cytokines. The breakage of the Th1/Th2 balance may result in RSA. The results provide clue that Th1/Th2 balance plays a role in maternal-fetal tolerance.

Abstract
Effects of stripped (alpha-tocopherol < 5 mg L(-)(1)) corn oil on flesh firmness, skin color, acidity, soluble solids content (SSC), scald, and fruit volatiles during 6 months at 0 degrees C were studied using Golden Supreme and Delicious apples. Treatment with 10% oil emulsion reduced production of ethylene, alpha-farnesene, and major volatile esters in the first 3 months of storage, but this trend reversed after 5 months. After 6 months at 0 degrees C plus 7 days at 20 degrees C, oil-treated fruit were firmer and greener and had higher levels of titratable acidity than the controls. In addition, control fruit developed 27% and 42% scald in Golden Supreme and Delicious apples, respectively, whereas oil-treated fruit were free from scald. Soluble solids content and ethanol production were unaffected by oil treatment.

Abstract
In this paper a column chromatographic preconcentration method using dithizone supported on naphthalene for copper in natural water is provided. The dissolving reagent is dimethylformamide (DMF). The dissolving solution is determined by atomic absorption spectrometer. The effect of pH, the flow rate of water samples, the choice of dissolving reagent, the effect of diverse ions were studied. RSD is 2.3%. The recoveries for the added standard are between 96%-103%. This method was applied to determined trace copper in natural water samples and standard water samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
Through the analysis of the treatment plans and the results of 159 patients with mandibular prognathism, the authors emphasized that orthodontic treatment plays an important role in the combined procedure in which the aims of orthodontic treatment include eliminating dental compensation, aligning the teeth, harmonizing arch compatibility, adjusting and maintaining occlusal relationship. The choice of surgical procedure used for setting back the mandible is closely related to the result of pre-operative orthodontic treatment. The body step osteotomy and vertical ramus osteotomy are the most commonly used procedure to set back the mandible after pre-operative orthodontic preparation.

Abstract
The effects of presurgical orthodontic decompensation on lower incisor inclination and angle ANB were studied using a modified Pancherz method of cephalometric analysis. Two groups of patients with mandibular hyperplasia were studied: one group (Group 1) of nineteen cases which required orthodontic decompensation and another (Group 2) of twenty-one cases which did not. The cephalometric changes which occurred in Group 1 were compared with the significant cephalometric differences existing between the two groups with respect to incisor inclination (ILi/OL; P < .001) and the sagittal relation (ANB; P < 0.05). After orthodontic treatment the average lower incisal angulation of the treated group was the same as that in the untreated group; the variations (S.D) being 3.6 degrees and 7.4 degrees respectively indicating that the clinical assessment of the orthodontic treatment effect was quite high.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of presurgical orthodontic correction of the mandibular prognathism. The sample consisted of two groups of surgical cases. The cases of the mandibular prognathism in group I with lower anterior dental compensation received presurgical orthodontic decompensation, and the cases in group II without lower anterior dental compensation did not receive presurgical orthodontic decompensation. The results showed that before presurgical orthodontic treatment, significantly differences existed between the two groups variable ILi/OL and ANB. After presurgical orthodontic correction lower incisors position in group I was very close to that in the group II, this means that the presurgical orthodontic treatment significantly changed the position of the lower incisors.
