Glycolysis and tumor progression promoted by the m6A writer VIRMA via m6A-dependent upregulation of STRA6 in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive and lethal malignancies, highlighting the urgent need to elucidate the underlying oncogenic mechanisms. VIRMA is a classic isoform of methyltransferases that participates in epigenetic transcriptomic modification in eukaryotic mRNAs. However, the exact roles of VIRMA in PDAC remain unclear. Here, we identified that VIRMA is highly expressed in PDAC, and histone modifications of the promoter may partly account for this dysregulation. Moreover, VIRMA is closely related to glycolysis and poor prognosis in PDAC. We further determined that STRA6 is a direct downstream target of VIRMA in PDAC by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and m6A sequencing (m6A-seq). VIRMA is involved in gene expression regulation via 3' UTR targeting of STRA6 mRNA. Furthermore, the m6A reader IGF2BP2 was shown to critically contribute to the stability of STRA6 mRNA. We describe the role of VIRMA in promoting signaling via the STRA6/STAT3 axis, which results in increased levels of HIF-1α, a key activator of glycolysis. In vivo and in vitro experiments reveal that the VIRMA-STRA6-STAT3-HIF-1α axis plays an instrumental role in glycolysis and tumor progression in PDAC. In conclusion, we demonstrate that VIRMA can increase glycolysis in PDAC by upregulating STRA6, a cell surface membrane protein that stimulates the STAT3 pathway, thereby activating HIF-1α and leading to pancreatic cancer malignancy. Overall, our data strongly suggest that the VIRMA-STRA6-STAT3-HIF-1α axis is a viable therapeutic target in PDAC.

Tumor-associated macrophages drive glycolysis through the IL-8/STAT3/GLUT3 signaling pathway in pancreatic cancer progression

Glycolytic metabolism is a hallmark of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and tumor-associated stromal cells play important roles in tumor metabolism. We previously reported that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) facilitate PDAC progression. However, little is known about whether TAMs are involved in regulating glycolysis in PDAC. Here, we found a positive correlation between CD68+ TAM infiltration and FDG maximal standardized uptake (FDG SUVmax) on PET-CT images of PDAC. We discovered that the glycolytic gene set was prominently enriched in the high TAM infiltration group through Gene Set Enrichment Analysis using The Cancer Genome Atlas database. Mechanistically, TAMs secreted IL-8 to promote GLUT3 expression in PDAC cells, enhancing tumor glycolysis both in vitro and in vivo, whereas this effect could be blocked by the IL-8 receptor inhibitor reparixin. Furthermore, IL-8 promoted the translocation of phosphorylated STAT3 into the nucleus to activate the GLUT3 promoter. Overall, we demonstrated that TAMs boosted PDAC cell glycolysis through the IL-8/STAT3/GLUT3 signaling pathway. Our cumulative findings suggest that the abrogation of TAM-induced tumor glycolysis by reparixin might exhibit an antitumor impact and offer a potential therapeutic target for PDAC.

[Efficacy analysis of 7 cases of mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine neoplasm of the duodenal papilla]

The clinical data of 7 patients diagnosed with mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine neoplasm were analyzed in the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery of Hunan Provincial People's Hospital from January 2016 to December 2022. Among the 7 patients, 5 were male and 2 were female, with an average age of 59.3 years. Its clinical characteristics are similar to malignant ampulla tumors, and it is difficult to differentiate them. The preoperative puncture biopsy positivity rate is low, making it difficult to diagnose preoperatively, and the prognosis is worse.Comprehensive treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy can be the preferred treatment option for this disease.

Epidemiology of healthcare-associated Pseudomonas aeruginosa in intensive care units: are sink drains to blame?

BACKGROUND

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is a common cause of healthcare-associated infection (PA-HAI) in the intensive care unit (ICU).

AIM

To describe the epidemiology of PA-HAI in ICUs in Ontario, Canada, and to identify episodes of sink-to-patient PA transmission.

METHODS

This was a prospective cohort study of patients in six ICUs from 2018 to 2019, with retrieval of PA clinical isolates, and PA-screening of antimicrobial-resistant organism surveillance rectal swabs, and of sink drain, air, and faucet samples. All PA isolates underwent whole-genome sequencing. PA-HAI was defined using US National Healthcare Safety Network criteria. ICU-acquired PA was defined as PA isolated from specimens obtained ≥48 h after ICU admission in those with prior negative rectal swabs. Sink-to-patient PA transmission was defined as ICU-acquired PA with close genomic relationship to isolate(s) previously recovered from sinks in a room/bedspace occupied 3-14 days prior to collection date of the relevant patient specimen.

FINDINGS

Over ten months, 72 PA-HAIs occurred among 60/4263 admissions. The rate of PA-HAI was 2.40 per 1000 patient-ICU-days; higher in patients who were PA-colonized on admission. PA-HAI was associated with longer stay (median: 26 vs 3 days uninfected; P < 0.001) and contributed to death in 22/60 cases (36.7%). Fifty-eight admissions with ICU-acquired PA were identified, contributing 35/72 (48.6%) PA-HAIs. Four patients with five PA-HAIs (6.9%) had closely related isolates previously recovered from their room/bedspace sinks.

CONCLUSION

Nearly half of PA causing HAI appeared to be acquired in ICUs, and 7% of PA-HAIs were associated with sink-to-patient transmission. Sinks may be an under-recognized reservoir for HAIs.

Effect of scapular stabilization exercises on subacromial pain (impingement) syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Objective

To evaluate the effectiveness of scapular stabilization exercises (SSE) in the treatment of subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS).

Methods

Clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on SSE in the treatment of SAPS were searched electronically in PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EBSCOhost, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Web of Science, and other databases from 2000 to 2022, supplemented by manual search. Final RCTs were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the study. A meta-analysis was conducted on data using the RevMan5.4 software.

Results

Eight RCTs involving 387 participants were included. The meta-analysis showed that the experimental group (SSE) had greater improvements in the Visual Analog Scale score [Weighted Mean Difference (WMD) = -0.94, 95% CI (-1.23, -0.65), p < 0.001] and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index score [WMD = -10.10, 95% CI (-18.87, -1.33), p = 0.02] than the control group (conventional physical therapy). However, range of motion (ROM) was not found to be greater in the experimental group than in the control group.

Conclusion

Existing evidence moderately supports the efficacy of SSE for reducing pain and improving function in SAPS, without significant improvement in ROM. Future research should focus on larger, high-quality, standardized protocols to better understand SSE's effects across diverse SAPS populations, treatment, and outcome measures.

Single-Atom Ru Alloyed with Ni Nanoparticles Boosts CO2 Methanation

Designing catalysts to proceed with catalytic reactions along the desired reaction pathways, e.g., CO2 methanation, has received much attention but remains a huge challenge. This work reports one Ru1Ni single-atom alloy (SAA) catalyst (Ru1Ni/SiO2) prepared via a galvanic replacement reaction between RuCl3 and Ni nanoparticles (NPs) derived from the reduction of Ni phyllosilicate (Ni-ph). Ru1Ni/SiO2 achieved much improved selectivity toward hydrogenation of CO2 to CH4 and catalytic activity (Turnover frequency (TOF) value: 40.00 × 10-3 s-1), much higher than those of Ni/SiO2 (TOF value: 4.40 × 10-3 s-1) and most reported Ni-based catalysts (TOF value: 1.03 × 10-3-11.00 × 10-3 s-1). Experimental studies verify that Ru single atoms are anchored onto the Ni NPs surface via the Ru1-Ni coordination accompanied by electron transfer from Ru1 to Ni. Both in situ experiments and theoretical calculations confirm that the interface sites of Ru1Ni-SAA are the intrinsic active sites, which promote the direct dissociation of CO2 and lower the energy barrier for the hydrogenation of CO* intermediate, thereby directing and enhancing the CO2 hydrogenation to CH4.

The utility of behavioral biometrics in user authentication and demographic characteristic detection: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Objective measures of screen time are necessary to better understand the complex relationship between screen time and health outcomes. However, current objective measures of screen time (e.g., passive sensing applications) are limited in identifying the user of the mobile device, a critical limitation in children's screen time research where devices are often shared across a family. Behavioral biometrics, a technology that uses embedded sensors on modern mobile devices to continuously authenticate users, could be used to address this limitation.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this scoping review was to summarize the current state of behavioral biometric authentication and synthesize these findings within the scope of applying behavioral biometric technology to screen time measurement.

METHODS

We systematically searched five databases (Web of Science Core Collection, Inspec in Engineering Village, Applied Science & Technology Source, IEEE Xplore, PubMed), with the last search in September of 2022. Eligible studies were on the authentication of the user or the detection of demographic characteristics (age, gender) using built-in sensors on mobile devices (e.g., smartphone, tablet). Studies were required to use the following methods for authentication: motion behavior, touch, keystroke dynamics, and/or behavior profiling. We extracted study characteristics (sample size, age, gender), data collection methods, data stream, model evaluation metrics, and performance of models, and additionally performed a study quality assessment. Summary characteristics were tabulated and compiled in Excel. We synthesized the extracted information using a narrative approach.

RESULTS

Of the 14,179 articles screened, 122 were included in this scoping review. Of the 122 included studies, the most highly used biometric methods were touch gestures (n = 76) and movement (n = 63), with 30 studies using keystroke dynamics and 6 studies using behavior profiling. Of the studies that reported age (47), most were performed exclusively in adult populations (n = 34). The overall study quality was low, with an average score of 5.5/14.

CONCLUSION

The field of behavioral biometrics is limited by the low overall quality of studies. Behavioral biometric technology has the potential to be used in a public health context to address the limitations of current measures of screen time; however, more rigorous research must be performed in child populations first.

High-Index Faceted Cu2 O@CuO Mesocrystals Act as Efficient Catalyst for Si Hydrochlorination to Trichlorosilane

Mesocrystals (MCs) with high-index facets may have superior catalytic properties to those with low-index facets and their nanocrystal counterparts. However, synthesizing such mesocrystal materials is still very challenging because of the metastability of MCs and energetic high-index crystal facets. This work reports a successful solvothermal method followed by calcination for synthesizing copper oxide-based MCs possessing a core-shell structure (denoted as Cu2 O@CuO HIMCs). Furthermore, these MCs are predominantly bounded by the high-index facets such as {311} or {312} with a high-density of stepped atoms. When used as catalysts in Si hydrochlorination to produce trichlorosilane (TCS, the primary feedstock of high-purity crystalline Si), Cu2 O@CuO HIMCs exhibit significantly enhanced Si conversion and TCS selectivity compared to those with flat surfaces and their nanostructured counterparts. Theoretical calculations reveal that both the core-shell structure and the high-index surface contribute to the increased electron density of Cu sites in Cu2 O@CuO HIMCs, promoting the adsorption and dissociation of HCl and stabilizing the dissociated Cl* intermediate. This work provides a simple method for synthesizing high-index faceted MCs and offers a feasible strategy to enhance the catalytic performance of MCs.

Caloric Restriction Rejuvenates Skeletal Muscle Growth in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a major clinical problem, with limited treatments. HFpEF is characterized by a distinct, but poorly understood, skeletal muscle pathology, which could offer an alternative therapeutic target. In a rat model, we identified impaired myonuclear accretion as a mechanism for low myofiber growth in HFpEF following resistance exercise. Acute caloric restriction rescued skeletal muscle pathology in HFpEF, whereas cardiac therapies had no effect. Mechanisms regulating myonuclear accretion were dysregulated in patients with HFpEF. Overall, these findings may have widespread implications in HFpEF, indicating combined dietary with exercise interventions as a beneficial approach to overcome skeletal muscle pathology.

Porous In2O3 Hollow Tube Infused with g-C3N4 for CO2 Photocatalytic Reduction

Converting CO2 into energy-rich fuels by using solar energy is a sustainable solution that promotes a carbon-neutral economy and mitigates our reliance on fossil fuels. However, affordable and efficient CO2 conversion remains an ongoing challenge. Here, we introduce polymeric g-C3N4 into the pores of a hollow In2O3 microtube. This architecture results in a compact and staggered arrangement between g-C3N4 and In2O3 components with an increased contact interface for improved charge separation. The hollow interior further contributes to strengthening light absorption. The resulting g-C3N4-In2O3 hollow tubes exhibit superior activity (274 μmol·g-1·h-1) toward CO2 to CO conversion in comparison with those of pure In2O3 and g-C3N4 (5.5 and 93.6 μmol·g-1·h-1, respectively), underlining the role of integrating g-C3N4 and In2O3 in this advanced system. This work offers a strategy for the advanced design and preparation of hollow heterostructures for optimizing CO2 adsorption and conversion by integrating inorganic and organic semiconductors.

Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Coupled with Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol over CsPbBr3@PANI Nanocomposites

Herein, we successfully prepare conductive polyaniline (PANI)-encapsulated CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) that demonstrate much improved photocatalytic performance and stability toward the CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) coupled with oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) to benzaldehyde. Due to the acid-base interaction between CO2 and PANI, CO2 molecules are selectively adsorbed on PANI in the form of carbamate. As a result, the rate of production of CO (rCO) reaches 26.1 μmol g-1 h-1 with a selectivity of 98.1%, which is in good agreement with the rate of oxidation (∼27.0 μmol g-1 h-1) of BA. Such a high reduction/oxidation rate is enabled by the fast electron transfer (∼2.2 ps) from PNCs to PANI, as revealed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, because of the benefit of the encapsulation of PANI, no significant decrease in rCO is observed in a 10 h CRR test. This work offers insight into how to simultaneously achieve improved photocatalytic performance and stability of CsPbX3 PNCs.

A simple and convenient model combining multiparametric MRI and clinical features to predict tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes in breast cancer

AIM

To develop a simple and convenient method based on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical features to non-invasively predict tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in breast cancer (BC) and to explore the relationship between TIL levels and disease-free survival (DFS).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 172 BC patients were enrolled between November 2017 and June 2021 in this retrospective study. The patients were divided into high (≥10%) and low (<10%) TIL groups. Clinicopathological data were collected. MRI features were reviewed by two radiologists. Predictors associated with TILs were determined by using multivariable logistic regression analyses. Kaplan-Meier survival curves based on TIL levels were used to estimate DFS.

RESULTS

A total of 102 patients with low TILs and 70 patients with high TILs were included in the study. Tumour size (odds ratio [OR], 1.040; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.006, 1.075; p=0.020), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC; OR, 1.003; 95% CI: 1.001, 1.005; p=0.015), clinical axillary lymph node status (CALNS; OR, 3.222; 95% CI: 1.372,7.568; p=0.007), and enhancement pattern (OR, 0.284; 95% CI: 0.143, 0.563; p<0.001) were independently associated with TIL levels. These features were used in the ALSE model (where A is ADC, L is CALNS, S is size, and E is enhancement pattern). High TILs were associated with better DFS (p=0.016).

CONCLUSION

The ALSE model derived from multiparametric MRI and clinical features could non-invasively predict TIL levels in BC, and high TILs were associated with longer DFS, especially in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive BC and triple-negative BC (TNBC).

Plant size, latitude, and phylogeny explain within-population variability in herbivory

Interactions between plants and herbivores are central in most ecosystems, but their strength is highly variable. The amount of variability within a system is thought to influence most aspects of plant-herbivore biology, from ecological stability to plant defense evolution. Our understanding of what influences variability, however, is limited by sparse data. We collected standardized surveys of herbivory for 503 plant species at 790 sites across 116° of latitude. With these data, we show that within-population variability in herbivory increases with latitude, decreases with plant size, and is phylogenetically structured. Differences in the magnitude of variability are thus central to how plant-herbivore biology varies across macroscale gradients. We argue that increased focus on interaction variability will advance understanding of patterns of life on Earth.

A mitochondrial EglN1-AMPKα axis drives breast cancer progression by enhancing metabolic adaptation to hypoxic stress

Mitochondria play essential roles in cancer cell adaptation to hypoxia, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Through mitochondrial proteomic profiling, we here find that the prolyl hydroxylase EglN1 (PHD2) accumulates on mitochondria under hypoxia. EglN1 substrate-binding region in the β2β3 loop is responsible for its mitochondrial translocation and contributes to breast tumor growth. Furthermore, we identify AMP-activated protein kinase alpha (AMPKα) as an EglN1 substrate on mitochondria. The EglN1-AMPKα interaction is essential for their mutual mitochondrial translocation. After EglN1 prolyl-hydroxylates AMPKα under normoxia, they rapidly dissociate following prolyl-hydroxylation, leading to their immediate release from mitochondria. In contrast, hypoxia results in constant EglN1-AMPKα interaction and their accumulation on mitochondria, leading to the formation of a Ca2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase 2 (CaMKK2)-EglN1-AMPKα complex to activate AMPKα phosphorylation, ensuring metabolic homeostasis and breast tumor growth. Our findings identify EglN1 as an oxygen-sensitive metabolic checkpoint signaling hypoxic stress to mitochondria through its β2β3 loop region, suggesting a potential therapeutic target for breast cancer.

Investigating the mechanism of interactive regulation of B-cell lymphoma-2/Beclin 1 through electroacupuncture intervention during reperfusion in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat model

To observe the regulation of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2)/Beclin 1 interaction through electroacupuncture (EA) intervention during reperfusion and to investigate the EA mechanism of apoptosis-autophagy interactive regulation against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI). A total of 48 adult Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into the sham-operated group (group Sham), the model group (group Model), the EA group (group EA), and the JNK inhibitor (SP600125) group (group JNK), with 12 rats in each group. Biospecimens were collected randomly from six rats in each group four hours after reperfusion. Evans Blue and triphenyl tetrazolium chloride double-staining were applied to observe each group's myocardial damage area and risk area. We collected 4 ml of blood by abdominal aortic method to detect serum troponin cTnI level by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). For the remaining six in each group, a part of myocardial tissue below the ligation line was stored in 4% paraformaldehyde for immunohistochemistry and TUNEL staining; the other amount of myocardial tissue was detected by Western blotting to determine the expression levels of Bcl-2, Beclin1, and the phosphorylation levels of Thr69, Ser70, and Ser87 in Bcl-2. In results: electroacupuncture (EA) intervention during reperfusion significantly reduced the myocardial infarction area, cTnI level, and myocardial apoptosis, upregulated Bcl-2 expression, downregulated Beclin 1 expression and inhibited phosphorylation levels of Thr69, Ser70, and Ser87 in Bcl-2. We concluded that EA effectively inhibited apoptosis by upregulating Bcl-2 expression and inhibiting the phosphorylation of Thr69, Ser70, and Ser87 in Bcl-2. This reduced the separation of Bcl-2 and Beclin 1, restrains excessive autophagy, alleviates MIRI, and has a protective effect on myocardial tissue.

Isolating Contiguous Ir Atoms and Forming Ir-W Intermetallics with Negatively Charged Ir for Efficient NO Reduction by CO

The lack of efficient catalysts with a wide working temperature window and vital O₂ and SO₂ resistance for selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO (CO-SCR) largely hinders its implementation. Here, a novel Ir-based catalyst with only 1 wt% Ir loading is reported for efficient CO-SCR. In this catalyst, contiguous Ir atoms are isolated into single atoms, and Ir-W intermetallic nanoparticles are formed, which are supported on ordered mesoporous SiO₂ (KIT-6). Notably, this catalyst enables complete NO conversion to N₂ at 250 °C in the presence of 1% O₂ and has a wide temperature window (250-400 °C), outperforming the comparison samples with Ir isolated-single-atomic-sites and Ir nanoparticles, respectively. Also, it possesses a high SO₂ tolerance. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that single Ir atoms are negatively charged, dramatically enhancing the NO dissociation, while the Ir-W intermetallic nanoparticles accelerate the reduction of the N₂ O and NO₂ intermediates by CO.

Public Health Concern on Sedentary Behavior and Cardiovascular Disease: A Bibliometric Analysis of Literature from 1990 to 2022

Background and Objectives: Cardiovascular disease is a long-term threat to global public health security, while sedentary behavior is a modifiable behavior among cardiovascular risk factors. This study aimed to analyze the peer-reviewed literature published globally on sedentary behavior and cardiovascular disease (SB-CVD) and identify the hotspots and frontiers within this research area. Materials and Methods: Publications on SB-CVD from 1990 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were applied to perform bibliometric and knowledge mapping visualization analyses. Results: A total of 2071 publications were retrieved, presenting a gradual growing trend. Authors from the USA topped the list with 748 (36.12%), followed by authors from England (373, 18.01%) and Australia (354, 17.09%). The University of Queensland, Australia, led with 95 (4.5%) publications. The top five active authors were all from Australia, while Dunstan D and Owen N published the most documents (56, 2.7%). A total of 71.27% of the publications received funding, and the United States Department of Health and Human Services provided 363 (17.53%) grants. Public Environmental Occupational Health (498, 24.05%), Sport Sciences (237, 11.44%), and Cardiac Cardiovascular Systems (212, 10.24%) were the three most popular disciplines, while PLOS One (96, 4.64%) and BMC Public Health (88, 4.25%) were the two most popular journals. Investigations within the SB-CVD research area addressed the entire lifespan, the most popular type of research was the epidemiological study, and the accelerometer was the primary instrument for measuring sedentary behavior. In terms of variables, physical activity and sedentary behavior were the dominant lifestyle behaviors, while obesity and hypertension were common health problems. Occupational physical activity and guidelines are at the frontier and are currently in the burst stage. Conclusions: The last three decades have witnessed the rapid development of the SB-CVD research area, and this study provided further research ideas for subsequent investigations.

Isolating Single Sn Atoms in CuO Mesocrystal to Form Ordered Atomic Interfaces: An Effective Strategy for Designing Highly Efficient Mesocrystal Catalysts

Tuning the electronic structures of mesocrystals at the atomic level is an effective approach to obtaining unprecedented properties. Here, a lattice-confined strategy to obtain isolated single-site Sn atoms in CuO mesocrystals to improve catalytic performance is reported. The Sn/CuO mesocrystal composite (Sn/CuO MC) has ordered Sn-O-Cu atomic interfaces originated from the long-range ordering of the CuO mesocrystal itself. X-ray absorption fine structure measurements confirm that the positively charged Sn atoms can tune the electronic structure of the Cu atoms to some extent in Sn/CuO MC, quite different from that in the conventional single-atom Sn-modified CuO nanoparticles and nanoparticulate SnO₂ -modified CuO mesocrystal catalysts. When tested for the Si hydrochlorination reaction to produce trichlorosilane, Sn/CuO MC exhibits significantly better performances than the above two catalysts. Theoretical calculations further reveal the electronic modification to the active Cu component and the induced improvement in HCl adsorption, and thus enhance the catalytic performance. This work demonstrates how to design efficient metal oxide mesocrystal catalysts through an electronic structure modification approach.

Molecular transformations of dissolved organic matter during UV/O3-assisted membrane filtration of UASB-treated real textile wastewater

A ceramic membrane reactor (CMR) integrated with in-situ UV/O₃ was assessed for post-treatment of the effluent out of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating real textile wastewater, focusing on the transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) revealed the transformation of heteroatomic DOM containing S, N or both to simpler DOM containing mainly C, H, and O atoms. The decreased N contents in products (N/C = 0.0249) compared to precursors (N/C = 0.0311) and the higher O/C ratios in the N-containing products suggest the removal of R-NH₂ groups accompanying DOM oxidation. While, S-containing compounds in the products had lower O/C and H/C ratios, suggesting a reduced state and the transformation of R-SO₃ to R-S-R. H-abstraction and OH addition were identified as the primary oxidation mechanisms, thus enhancing the dominance of highly unsaturated and phenolic DOM in the effluent (70.3%) compared to the feed (56.6%). The double bond equivalent (DBE) was also increased by 26% in the effluent compared to the feed and by 33% in products compared to precursors. These findings help understand the DOM transformation in UV/O₃-assisted ceramic membrane reactors and call for comprehensive toxicity analyses of effluents from the advanced oxidation processes.

A LETM2-Regulated PI3K-Akt Signaling Axis Reveals a Prognostic and Therapeutic Target in Pancreatic Cancer

Simple Summary

LEMT2 was a newly discovered protein-encoding gene with little cancer research and an unclear mechanism. This study aimed to illustrate LETM2 as the crucial oncogene for tumor progression in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). We analyzed the expression level and prognostic value of LETM2 in multiple cancers using pan-cancer analysis and found that the LETM2 expression was the most significantly related to the dismal prognosis of PDAC. Immunohistochemical analyses showed that high LETM2 expression was correlated with poor outcomes of PDAC. In in vitro and in vivo experiments, LETM2 knockdown significantly inhibited tumor proliferation and metastasis, while LETM2 overexpression exerted the opposite effects. Then, we suggested that LETM2 may facilitate tumor progression by activating downstream PI3K-Akt signaling pathway in PDAC. In conclusion, the study enhanced our understanding of the LETM2-regulated PI3K-Akt signaling axis served as a prognostic and therapeutic target of pancreatic cancer.

Abstract

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the highest mortalities malignant tumors, which is characterized by difficult diagnosis, rapid progression and high recurrence rate. Nevertheless, PDAC responds poorly to conventional therapies, which highlights the urgency to identify novel prognostic and therapeutic targets. LEMT2 was a newly discovered protein-encoding gene with little cancer research and an unclear mechanism. Thus, this study aimed to illustrate LETM2 as the crucial oncogene for tumor progression in PDAC. In this study, we analyzed the expression level and prognostic value of LETM2 in multiple cancers using pan-cancer analysis. The analyses based on the TCGA-GTEx dataset indicated that the LETM2 expression was obviously elevated in several cancers, and it was the most significantly related to the dismal prognosis of PDAC. Subsequently, we demonstrated the functional role and mechanism of LETM2 by clinical sample evaluation, and in in vitro and in vivo experiments. Immunohistochemical analyses showed that high expression of LETM2 was correlated with poor outcomes of PDAC. Moreover, we demonstrated that LETM2 knockdown significantly inhibited tumor proliferation and metastasis, and promoted cell apoptosis, while LETM2 overexpression exerted the opposite effects. Finally, the impairment caused by LETM2-knockdown could be recovered via excitation of the PI3k-Akt pathway in vitro and in vivo animal models, which suggested that LETM2 could activate the downstream PI3K-Akt pathway to participate in PDAC progression. In conclusion, the study enhanced our understanding of LETM2 as an oncogene hallmark of PDAC. LETM2 may facilitate tumor progression by activating the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, which provides potential targets for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of pancreatic cancer.

CO2 Activation and Hydrogenation on Cu-ZnO/Al2O3 Nanorod Catalysts: An In Situ FTIR Study

CuZnO/Al2O3 is the industrial catalyst used for methanol synthesis from syngas (CO + H2) and is also promising for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. In this work, we synthesized Al2O3 nanorods (n-Al2O3) and impregnated them with the CuZnO component. The catalysts were evaluated for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol in a fixed-bed reactor. The support and the catalysts were characterized, including via in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The study of the CO2 adsorption, activation, and hydrogenation using in situ DRIFT spectroscopy revealed the different roles of the catalyst components. CO2 mainly adsorbed on the n-Al2O3 support, forming carbonate species. Cu was found to facilitate H2 dissociation and further reacted with the adsorbed carbonates on the n-Al2O3 support, transforming them to formate or additional intermediates. Like the n-Al2O3 support, the ZnO component contributed to improving the CO2 adsorption, facilitating the formation of more carbonate species on the catalyst surface and enhancing the efficiency of the CO2 activation and hydrogenation into methanol. The synergistic interaction between Cu and ZnO was found to be essential to increase the space–time yield (STY) of methanol but not to improve the selectivity. The 3% CuZnO/n-Al2O3 displayed improved catalytic performance compared to 3% Cu/n-Al2O3, reaching a CO2 conversion rate of 19.8% and methanol STY rate of 1.31 mmolgcat−1h−1 at 300 °C. This study provides fundamental and new insights into the distinctive roles of the different components of commercial methanol synthesis catalysts.

Impacts of the Catalyst Structures on CO2 Activation on Catalyst Surfaces

Utilizing CO2 as a sustainable carbon source to form valuable products requires activating it by active sites on catalyst surfaces. These active sites are usually in or below the nanometer scale. Some metals and metal oxides can catalyze the CO2 transformation reactions. On metal oxide-based catalysts, CO2 transformations are promoted significantly in the presence of surface oxygen vacancies or surface defect sites. Electrons transferable to the neutral CO2 molecule can be enriched on oxygen vacancies, which can also act as CO2 adsorption sites. CO2 activation is also possible without necessarily transferring electrons by tailoring catalytic sites that promote interactions at an appropriate energy level alignment of the catalyst and CO2 molecule. This review discusses CO2 activation on various catalysts, particularly the impacts of various structural factors, such as oxygen vacancies, on CO2 activation.

Characterization of serum adiponectin and leptin in healthy perinatal dairy cows or cows with ketosis, and their effectson ketosis involved indices

We investigated changes in concentrations of ADP (adiponectin), LEP (leptin), BHBA (beta-hydroxybutyric acid), NEFA (non-esterified fatty acid), Glucose (Glu) and INS (insulin) in serum of healthy perinatal dairy cows and cows with ketosis. Twenty-one healthy cows and seventeen cows with ketosis from a herd of a total 60 Holstein cows (near dry period i.e. 56 days antepartum) were selected. Blood was collected through the tail vein every 7 days, from 56 day antepartum to 56 day postpartum. Serum ADP, LEP, BHBA, NEFA, Glu, and INS concentrations were determined, and ketosis was diagnosed through serum BHBA (≥1.2 mmol/L). We showed the concentration of serum adipokines and energy balancing indices were stable during antepar- tum period. However, ADP concentration increased while LEP decreased, and there were a significant increase in cows with ketosis compared to that of in healthy cows. Serum BHBA and NEFA concentrations increased significantly at first, and then gradually decreased in both healthy cows and cows with ketosis. However, cows with ketosis showed higher concentrations of BHBA and NEFA which restored later. The serum concentration of Glu in both healthy dairy cows and cows with ketosis showed a decreasing trend. INS concentration in healthy cows was decreased while it was increased in cows with ketosis. The results reflect the extent of hypo- glycemia and lipid mobilization postpartum, suggest IR exists in cows with ketosis while serum ADP and LEP might play roles in the development of ketosis.

Mutations of the c-Kit and PDGFRA gene in gastrointestinal stromal tumors among hakka population of Southern China

Aims

The aim of the present study was to investigate mutation status of the cKit and PDGFRA genes in patients with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).

Methods

In total, 96 patients with a GIST were included in the study, in which polymerase chain reaction amplification and gene sequencing were used to detect the sequences of exons 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, and 18 in KIT and exons 12, 14, and 18 in PDGFRA.

Results

KIT mutations were detected in 65 cases (67.71%), of which 81.54% (53/65) were located on exon 11, 12.31% (8/65) were located on exon 9, 4.61% (3/65) were located on exon 17, which included a concomitant mutation of exon 9 and 11, and 4.08% (2/65) were located on exon 13, which included a concomitant mutation on exon 11. The most common mutation in exon 11 was deletion, which accounted for 77.36% (41/53) of the cases, followed by a point mutation observed in 22.64% (12/53) of the cases. Among the 31 GIST cases without a KIT mutation, a mutation in PDGFRA was detected in 5 cases (5.21%, 5/96; 16.13%, 5/31). With respect to gender, age, tumor max diameter, tumor position, and mitotic index, there were no significant differences between KIT/PDGFRA mutations and non-mutations.

Conclusions

GIST mainly occurs in the stomach, and the cytological morphology is mainly spindle cells, and the mutations mainly occur in KIT genes. We need a large sample size to analyze the regularity of GIST gene mutations in Hakka population and understand the independent prognostic correlation of all KIT/PDGFRA genotypes.

AB0791 THE DIAGNOSIS VALUE OF SYNOVIAL FLUID LYMPHOCYTE IN GOUT PATIENTS

Background:

Synovial fluid cell counts have long been recognised to have utility in the diagnosis and management of arthritis. Few studies have explained the diagnosis value of synovial fluid cell counts in gout patients.

Objectives:

The study aims to investigate the diagnosis value of synovial fluid cell counts in gout patients.

Methods:

A total of 185 gout, 64 rheumatoid arthritis(RA), 26 axial spondyloarthritis(axSpA) and 24 osteoarthritis(OA) patients were included into the study. According to serum uric acid(sUA) level on attack, gout patients were divided into normal sUA gout patients and high sUA gout patients. The laboratory data was recorded and ROC curve was performed.

Results:

The synovial fluid WBC, PBMC, monocyte, PMN and neutrophil in gout patients were higher than OA patients (P<0.05). The synovial fluid PBMC and lymphocyte in gout patients were lower than RA and axSpA patients (P<0.05). Compared with RA, axSpA and OA patients, ROC curve showed that the AUC value of lymphocyte and sUA for gout were 0.728 and 0.881, which were higher than other variables. The optimal cut off value of lymphocyte for gout was 1.362, with sensitivity of 83.3% and specificity of 60.6%. The AUC value of lymphocyte and sUA for normal sUA gout patients were 0.694 and 0.643, which were higher than other variables. The optimal cut off value of lymphocyte for normal sUA gout patients was 1.362, with sensitivity of 81.6% and specificity of 60.6%.

Conclusion:

Synovial fluid cell counts of gout patients were different from RA, axSpA, and OA patients. Synovial fluid lymphocyte had a higher diagnosis value for gout.

POS1144 SERUM URIC ACID TO CREATININE RATIO IS ASSOCIATED WITH URINARY URIC ACID EXCRETION IN PATIENTS WITH GOUT

Background:

Underexcretion of uric acid is the dominant mechanism leading to hyperuricemia [1] and the 24-hour urinary uric acid excretion is an important measurement. However, it is inconvenient due to accurate timing and complete collection of the specimen.

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum uric acid to creatinine ratio (sUACR) and 24-hour urinary uric acid excretion in gout patients.

Methods:

A total of 110 gout patients fulfilling 2015 ACR/EULAR classification criteria from Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital from January 2019 to January 2021 were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Patients were divided into underexcretion group (<3600 μmol/24h) and non-underexcretion group (≥3600 μmol/24h). The correlation between sUACR and 24-hour urinary uric acid excretion was analyzed by the Pearson’s correlations analysis. Receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curves were performed to assess the utility of sUACR for discriminating between underexcretion group and non-underexcretion group. Furthermore, the risk factors of uric acid underexcretion were evaluated using binary logistic regression analysis.

Results:

sUACR in the underexcretion group was significantly lower than the non-underexcretion group (p=0.0001). Besides, sUACR was positively correlated with 24-hour urinary uric acid excretion (r=0.4833, p<0.0001). Furthermore, ROC suggested that the area under the curve (AUC) of sUACR was 0.728, which was higher that of serum uric acid and creatinine. The optimal cutoff point of sUACR was 5.2312, with a sensitivity and specificity of 71.9% and 67.9%. Logistic analysis results revealed that decreased sUACR (<5.2312) was an independent risk factor of underexcretion of uric acid (OR =5.510, 95% CI: 1.952-15.550, P=0.001).

Conclusion:

sUACR is lower in gout patients with underexcretion of uric acid and may serve as a useful and convenient marker of assessing underexcretion of uric acid in gout patients.

AB0645 CLINCAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GOUT PATIENTS WITH RENAL CYSTS

Background:

Gout is a crystal-related arthropathy caused by monosodium urate deposition, which is a common and treatable form of inflammatory arthritis and becoming more prevalent[1]. A few studies have found that gout patients have an increased prevalence of simple renal cysts[2, 3]. The relationship between gout and renal cysts is still insufficient.

Objectives:

Compare the difference between gout with renal cyst and without renal cyst.

Methods:

We retrospectively collected data on 200 gout patients. The data includes age, gender, uric acid, creatinine, glomerular filtration rate, 24-hour urine collection, and whether they have kidney stones, renal cysts, coronary heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Chi-square and exact Fisher’s tests were utilized, while continuous variables were assessed by Student’s t-test. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results:

Of the 200 gout patients, 56 have kidney cysts(28%). In gout patients who had a renal cyst, were significantly older than patients without renal cysts (59.14 vs. 46.87, P = 0.000), more number of people suffering from coronary heart disease (7 vs. 5, P = 0.016). The glomerular filtration rate was lower (58.5 vs. 71.6, P = 0.000), with lower urinary creatinine, uric acid, and urinary potassium.

Conclusion:

Gout patients with and without simple renal cysts have significant differences in age, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, GFR, serum creatinine, urine creatinine, and urine potassium.

In situ generating Cu2O/Cu heterointerfaces on the Cu2O cube surface to enhance interface charge transfer for the Rochow reaction

Cubic Cu/Cu₂O with heterointerfaces showed enhanced catalytic performance for the Rochow reaction. The resulting Schottky junction enhanced charge transfer efficiency and contributed to easier cleavage of Si–Si bond along {110} crystal plane.

Architectural Cu2O@CuO mesocrystals as superior catalyst for trichlorosilane synthesis

As compared with conventional nanocrystal systems, Cu-based mesocrystals have demonstrated distinct advantages in catalytic applications. Here, we report the preparation of a novel architectural Cu₂O@CuO catalyst system integrated with the core/shell and mesocrystal structures (Cu₂O@CuO MC) via a facile solvothermal process followed by calcination. The formation mechanism of the Cu₂O@CuO MC with hexapod morphology was deciphered based on a series of time-dependent experiments and characterizations. When applied as a Cu-based catalyst to produce trichlorosilane (TCS) via Si hydrochlorination reaction, the Cu₂O@CuO MC exhibited a much higher Si conversion, TCS selectivity, and stability than the catalyst-free industrial process and the Cu₂O@CuO catalyst with a core-shell nanostructure. The enhanced catalytic efficiency of the former is attributed to the collective effects from its quite rough surface for providing abundant adsorption sites, the ordered nanoparticle arrangement in the core and shell for generating strong synergistic effects, and the micrometer size for the improved structural stability. This work demonstrates a practical route for designing sophisticated architectural structures that combine several structural functions within one catalyst system and their catalysis applications.

A new generation of direct X-ray detectors for medical and synchrotron imaging applications

Large-area X-ray imaging is one of the most widely used imaging modalities that spans several scientific and technological fields. Currently, the direct X-ray conversion materials that are being commercially used for large-area (> 8 cm × 4 cm without tiling) flat panel applications, such as amorphous selenium (a-Se), have usable sensitivities of up to only 30 keV. Although there have been many promising candidates (such as polycrystalline HgI2 and CdTe), none of the semiconductors were able to assuage the requirement for high energy (> 40 keV) large-area X-ray imaging applications due to inadequate cost, manufacturability, and long-term performance metrics. In this study, we successfully demonstrate the potential of the hybrid Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite-based semiconductor detectors in satisfying all the requirements for its successful commercialization in synchrotron and medical imaging. This new generation of hybrid detectors demonstrates low dark current under electric fields needed for high sensitivity X-ray imaging applications. The detectors have a linear response to X-ray energy and applied bias, no polarization effects at a moderate bias, and signal stability over long usage durations. Also, these detectors have demonstrated a stable detection response under BNL's National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) 70 keV monochromatic synchrotron beamline.

2D shear wave elastography combined with age and serum biomarkers prior to kasai surgery predicts native liver survival of biliary atresia infants

BACKGROUND

The prognosis of patients with biliary atresia (BA) after Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE) varies, and precisely predicting the outcomes of KPE before surgery is still challenging.

METHODS

A total of 158 patients who underwent KPE in our hospital were included in this study. The patients in the training cohort were recruited from January 2012 to October 2017 (n = 118), and then, those in the validation cohort were recruited from November 2017 to April 2019 (n = 40). Combined nomogram models were developed based on two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D SWE) values and other biomarkers. The utility of the proposed models was evaluated by C-index.

RESULTS

2D SWE played a potentially important role in predicting native liver survival (NLS) of BA patients with a C-index of 0.69 (0.63 to 0.75) in the training cohort and 0.76 (0.67 to 0.85) in the validation cohort. The nomogram A based on 2D SWE values, age, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio (APRI) had a better C-index in the training cohort [0.74 (0.68-0.80) vs. 0.66 (0.60-0.73), P = 0.017] and in the validation cohort [0.78 (0.70-0.86) vs. 0.60 (0.49-0.71), P = 0.002] than the nomogram B (without 2D SWE). Using risk score developed from nomogram A, we successfully predicted 88.0% (22/25) of patients in the training cohort and 75.0% (9/12) in the validation cohort to have survival time of less than 12 months after KPE.

CONCLUSION

The combined nomogram model based on 2D SWE values, age, GGT and APRI prior to KPE can effectively predict NLS in BA infants.

Recycling the CoMo/Al2O3 catalyst for effectively hydro-upgrading shale oil with high sulfur content and viscosity

Hydrotreatment is an effective upgrading technology for removing contaminants and saturating double bonds. Still, few studies have reported the hydro-upgrading of shale oil, with unusually high sulfur (13200 ppm) content, using the CoMo/Al₂O₃ catalyst. Here we report an extensive study on the upgrading of shale oil by hydrotreatment in a stirred batch autoclave reactor (500 ml) for sulfur removal and viscosity reduction. From a preliminary optimization of the reaction factors, the best-operating conditions were 400 °C, an initial H₂-pressure of 5 MPa, and an agitation rate of 800 rpm, a catalyst-to-oil ratio of 0.1, and a reaction time of 1 h. We could achieve a sulfur removal efficiency of 87.1% and 88.2% viscosity reduction under the optimal conditions. After that, the spent CoMo/Al₂O₃ was repeatedly used for subsequent upgrading tests without any form of pre-treatment. The results showed an increase in the sulfur removal efficiency with an increase in the number of catalyst runs. Ultimately, 99.5–99.9% sulfur removal from the shale oil was achieved by recycling the spent material. Both the fresh and the spent CoMo/Al₂O₃ were characterized and analyzed to ascertain their transformation levels by XRD, TEM, TG, XPS, TPD and N₂ adsorption analysis. The increasing HDS efficiency is attributed to the continuing rise in the sulfidation degree of the catalyst in the sulfur-rich shale oil. The light fraction component in the liquid products (IBP–180 °C) was 30–37 vol% higher than in the fresh shale oil. The product oil can meet the sulfur content requirement of the national standard marine fuel (GB17411-2015/XG1-2018) of China.

The CoMo/Al₂O₃ catalyst was used to upgrade shale oil. Sulfur removal was increased on the spent catalyst. The transition of oxidic Mo-species into active phase MoS₂ was observed with recycling. The high sulfidation degree of the CoMo/Al₂O₃ suppressed deactivation by coking.

Immobilizing a visible light-responsive photocatalyst on a recyclable polymeric composite for floating and suspended applications in water treatment

A visible light responsive TiO2/Ag3PO4 (10 : 1) nanocomposite was prepared and successfully immobilized (12 wt%) in a spherical polymeric matrix consisting of polysulfone and alginate (10 : 6). The resulted beads featured a sponge-like structure with interconnected macrovoids and micropores, and showed high adsorption and visible-light photocatalytic activity towards various wastewater pollutants, including the widely used dye - methylene blue (k = 0.0321 min-1), and two emerging pharmaceutical contaminants - diclofenac (k = 0.018 min-1) and triclosan (k = 0.052 min-1). As determined, the ˙OH radical and h+ are the primary reactive oxygen species responsible for the photodegradation. The composite photocatalytic beads are also effective in bacterial inactivation and degradation of acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), the bacterial quorum sensing autoinducers triggering biofilms, thus exhibiting a promising future in wastewater disinfection and biofilm retardation. Additionally, these beads could be used in inter-switchable suspended or buoyant forms, and be effectively regenerated by H2O2 treatment, and used for multiple cycles without any significant loss in photoactivity. With these unique features, the prepared visible-light photocatalytic beads could be easily applied in large-scale water and wastewater treatment systems.

Clinical Characteristics and Distribution of Thumb Polydactyly in South China: A Retrospective Analysis of 483 Hands

PURPOSE

This study was intended to characterize the epidemiological features of thumb polydactyly (TP) in South China.

METHODS

Clinical records were retrieved from 1 central hospital in South China to identify the patients with a definite diagnosis of TP from January 2004 to January 2017. The cases were classified by their x-ray appearance. The data collected included sex, age at first operation, reoperation, family history, unilateral/bilateral polydactyly, right/left hand involvement in unilateral cases, classification of polydactyly, and the presence of associated congenital anomalies.

RESULTS

A total of 428 patients with a definite diagnosis of TP were identified (278 males and 150 females) involving 483 cases, 373 unilateral and 55 bilateral. A syndrome or associated congenital anomaly was found in 26 (18 unilateral and 8 bilateral cases). A dominant thumb, larger and more developed, was observed in 448 hands (93%), and was the ulnar thumb in 433. Owing to postoperative complications, 31 thumbs (6.4%) underwent reoperation. The average interval from initial surgery to reoperation was 4.8 years.

CONCLUSIONS

Thumb polydactyly had a male predominance in this Chinese cohort, mostly occurring on the right hand with an ulnar dominant thumb. Bilateral cases had a higher incidence of associated anomaly and positive family history than unilateral cases. The need for additional surgery for TP might occur as late as 4.8 years after primary surgery.

Clinical characteristics and surgical treatment of haemophilic pseudotumor: A retrospective analysis of thirty-four patients

AIMS

Haemophilic pseudotumor (HPT) is a rare but challenging complication of haemophilia. This study was intended to provide our experience about clinical characteristics and surgical treatment of HPT.

METHODS

Clinical medical records were retrieved from the Hemophilia Center, Nanfang Hospital, to identify the patients who had been surgically treated from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2017 with a definite diagnosis of HPT. Their clinical features, surgical management, outcomes and complications after surgery were analysed.

RESULTS

We identified 34 patients with HPT who had surgical treatment over a 12-year period and five of them had multiple HPTs. The incidence of HPT at this centre was 2.3% over the dozen years. A previous trauma leading to the development of HPT was reported in 18 cases (52.9%). The HPT affected only soft tissue in 7 patients, bone and soft tissue in 25 ones and joint in 2 ones. Preoperative infection and fistula formation happened in ten patients, two of whom were related to abdominal HPTs. Enterococcus faecalis was cultured in five cases with fistula formation. HPT associated with pathological fracture was observed in five cases, two of whom were treated by external fixation and 3 by HPT resection and metallic internal fixation. Amputation was performed for nine patients, 6 of whom had preoperative infection and fistula formation. Their follow-up duration averaged 4.2 ± 2.9 years (range, from 1 to 13.5 years) after surgery. Of all our cases, three suffered from postoperative infection, five from recurrence of HPT and two with external fixation from fracture non-union.

CONCLUSIONS

HPT patients with preoperative infection had worse prognosis than those without. Surgical treatment plus intensive replacement therapy was effective for HPT but with a high rate of complications. HPT resection and metallic internal fixation rather than external fixation should be recommended for HPT patients with pathological fracture.
