A spatially explicit trait-based approach uncovers changes in assembly processes under warming

The re-assembly of plant communities during climate warming depends on several concurrent processes. Here, we present a novel framework that integrates spatially explicit sampling, plant trait information and a warming experiment to quantify shifts in these assembly processes. By accounting for spatial distance between individuals, our framework allows separation of potential signals of environmental filtering from those of different types of competition. When applied to an elevational transplant experiment in the French Alps, we found common signals of environmental filtering and competition in all communities. Signals of environmental filtering were generally stronger in alpine than in subalpine control communities, and warming reduced this filter. Competition signals depended on treatments and traits: Symmetrical competition was dominant in control and warmed alpine communities, while hierarchical competition was present in subalpine communities. Our study highlights how distance-dependent frameworks can contribute to a better understanding of transient re-assembly dynamics during environmental change.

The design of the n2EDM experiment: nEDM Collaboration

We present the design of a next-generation experiment, n2EDM, currently under construction at the ultracold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) with the aim of carrying out a high-precision search for an electric dipole moment of the neutron. The project builds on experience gained with the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017, and is expected to deliver an order of magnitude better sensitivity with provision for further substantial improvements. An overview is of the experimental method and setup is given, the sensitivity requirements for the apparatus are derived, and its technical design is described.

Single Word Reading in the Real World: Effects of Transposed-Letters

We investigated single word reading in a context where isolated word presentation is not unusual reading road signs in a simulated car driving situation. Participants had to indicate if the inscription on the road sign was a real word or not (lexical decision). The critical nonwords were created in two ways: by transposing two letters in a real word (e.g., the word Highway becomes Hihgway) or by substituting the same two letters with different letters (Hifpway). The baseword used to create the critical nonword stimuli were either congruent with a driving context (e.g., highway) or incongruent (e.g., garden). Nonwords created by a letter transposition were harder to reject as such compared with letter substitution nonwords a transposed-letter effect. The effect of baseword congruency was not significant and did not interact with the transposed-letter effect.

Supersonic kinks and solitons in active solids

To show that steadily propagating nonlinear waves in active matter can be driven internally, we develop a prototypical model of a topological kink moving with a constant supersonic speed. We use a model of a bi-stable mass-spring (Fermi-Pasta-Ulam) chain capable of generating active stress. In contrast to subsonic kinks in passive bi-stable chains that are necessarily dissipative, the obtained supersonic solutions are purely anti-dissipative. Our numerical experiments point towards the stability of the obtained kink-type solutions and the possibility of propagating kink-anti-kink bundles reminiscent of solitons. We show that even the simplest quasi-continuum approximation of the discrete model captures the most important features of the predicted active phenomena. Dynamic fracture of a dissimilar chain

In this paper, we study the dynamic fracture of a dissimilar chain composed of two different mass-spring chains and connected with other springs. The propagation of the fault (crack) is realized under externally applied moving forces. In comparison with a homogeneous double chain, the considered structure displays some new essential features of steady-state crack propagation. Specifically, the externally applied forces are of a different strength, unlike a static case, and should be appropriately chosen to satisfy the equilibrium of the structure. Moreover, there exists a gap in the range of crack speeds where the steady-state fracture cannot occur. We analyse the admissibility of solutions for different model parameters and crack speeds. We complement analytical findings with numerical simulations to validate our results. Adaptive multimode signal reconstruction from time-frequency representations

This paper discusses methods for the adaptive reconstruction of the modes of multicomponent AM-FM signals by their time-frequency (TF) representation derived from their short-time Fourier transform (STFT). The STFT of an AM-FM component or mode spreads the information relative to that mode in the TF plane around curves commonly called ridges. An alternative view is to consider a mode as a particular TF domain termed a basin of attraction. Here we discuss two new approaches to mode reconstruction. The first determines the ridge associated with a mode by considering the location where the direction of the reassignment vector sharply changes, the technique used to determine the basin of attraction being directly derived from that used for ridge extraction. A second uses the fact that the STFT of a signal is fully characterized by its zeros (and then the particular distribution of these zeros for Gaussian noise) to deduce an algorithm to compute the mode domains. For both techniques, mode reconstruction is then carried out by simply integrating the information inside these basins of attraction or domains.
