Complete Photooxidation of Formaldehyde to CO2 via Ni-Dual-Atom Decorated Crystalline Triazine Frameworks: A DFT Study

Formaldehyde (CH2O) emerges as a significant air pollutant, necessitating effective strategies for its oxidation to mitigate adverse impacts on human health and the environment. Among various technologies, the photooxidation of CH2O stands out owing to its affordability, safety, and effectiveness. Nitrogen-rich crystalline triazine-based organic frameworks (CTFs) exhibit considerable potential in this domain. Nevertheless, the weak and unstable CH2O adsorption hinders the overall oxidation efficiency of CTF. To address this limitation, we incorporate single and dual Ni atoms into nitrogen-rich CTFs by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, resulting in CTF-Ni and CTF-2Ni. This strategic modification significantly enhances the adsorption capability of CH2O. Notably, this synergy between Ni dual atoms activates CH2O by strong chemical adsorption, thereby reducing the energy barrier of CH2O oxidation and achieving the complete oxidation of CH2O to CO2. Moreover, the introduction of dual-atom Ni over CTF ameliorates visible and near-infrared light absorption and facilitates photoexcited charge transfer and separation. Finally, the underlying mechanisms of complete CH2O oxidation over CTF-2Ni are proposed. This work offers novel insights into the rational design of photocatalysts for CH2O oxidation through the integration of Ni dual atoms into CTFs.

A Multiethnic Germline-Somatic Association Database Deciphers Multilayered and Interconnected Genetic Mutations in Cancer

Inherited germline and acquired somatic alterations can both promote human tumor development. Elucidating the cooperation between somatic and germline genetic alterations that drive tumorigenesis could help inform precision cancer prevention and treatment strategies. Here, leveraging genomic genotyping and sequencing data from 9,029 patients with cancer with European, East Asian, and African ancestry, we performed a pan-cancer analysis to evaluate the associations between germline SNPs and somatic alterations, including single-nucleotide variant and small insertion/deletion mutations, copy-number variation, tumor mutational burden, and mutational signatures. Genome-wide significant germline-somatic pairs were abundant, and most of the associations were observed in one cancer type and one ancestry group. A user-friendly interactive Multiethnic Germline-Somatic Association (MGSA) database (http://wanglab-hkust.cn:3838/MGSA/) was developed, which can be used to query, browse, and download the results of the association analyses. Moreover, the MGSA database offers additional survival analysis and functional annotation. Together, this work provides a resource for uncovering the clinical and biological roles of associations between germline variants and somatic alterations in human cancer.

SIGNIFICANCE

Comprehensive analysis of connections between germline variants and somatic events in cancer offers a resource for investigating the functional significance of genetic mutations and exploring genetic factors contributing to racial disparities.

circRNADisease v2.0: an updated resource for high-quality experimentally supported circRNA-disease associations

circRNADisease v2.0 is an enhanced and reliable database that offers experimentally verified relationships between circular RNAs (circRNAs) and various diseases. It is accessible at http://cgga.org.cn/circRNADisease/ or http://cgga.org.cn:9091/circRNADisease/. The database currently includes 6998 circRNA-disease entries across multiple species, representing a remarkable 19.77-fold increase compared to the previous version. This expansion consists of a substantial rise in the number of circRNAs (from 330 to 4246), types of diseases (from 48 to 330) and covered species (from human only to 12 species). Furthermore, a new section has been introduced in the database, which collects information on circRNA-associated factors (genes, proteins and microRNAs), molecular mechanisms (molecular pathways), biological functions (proliferation, migration, invasion, etc.), tumor and/or cell line and/or patient-derived xenograft (PDX) details, and prognostic evidence in diseases. In addition, we identified 7 159 865 relationships between mutations and circRNAs among 30 TCGA cancer types. Due to notable enhancements and extensive data expansions, the circRNADisease 2.0 database has become an invaluable asset for both clinical practice and fundamental research. It enables researchers to develop a more comprehensive understanding of how circRNAs impact complex diseases.

Thermosensitive Scattering Hydrogels Based on Triblock Poly-Ethers: A Novel Approach to Solar Radiation Regulation

Energy conservation in buildings is paramount, especially considering that glass accounts for 50% of energy consumption. The solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of glass is a critical energy-saving index for transparent structures. However, the fixed SHGC of ordinary glass makes it difficult to provide both summer shading and winter heating. In this study, we synthesized a hydrogel with a thermosensitive scattering (TS) property using triblock polyether and acrylamide. This hydrogel can realize the transition of clearness and atomization based on the temperature. When sealed within a glass cavity, it exhibits a high SHGC of 0.682 in its transparent state and a low SHGC of less than 0.31 when atomized. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the TS glass can be adjusted from 0 to 70 °C to suit different regions. The photothermal properties of the material remained stable after 200 hot and cold cycles and 200 h of ultraviolet irradiation. This glass can prevent solar radiation from entering the room in summer, thereby reducing air conditioning usage and power consumption. In winter, it allows solar heat radiation to enter the room, minimizing the need for artificial heating. Its adaptable temperature design makes it an excellent solution for designers to create energy-efficient building exteriors.

Passive Internet of Events Enabled by Broadly Compatible Self-Powered Visualized Platform Toward Real-Time Surveillance

Surveillance is an intricate challenge worldwide especially in those complicated environments such as nuclear plants, banks, crowded areas, barns, etc. Deploying self-powered wireless sensor nodes can increase the system's event detection capabilities by collecting environmental changes, while the incompatibility among components (energy harvesters, sensors, and wireless modules) limits their application. Here, a broadly compatible self-powered visualized platform (SPVP) is reported to construct a passive internet of events (IoE) network for surveillance systems. By encoding electric signals into reference and working LEDs, SPVP can visualize resistance change generated by commercial resistive sensors with a broad working range (<107  Ω) and the transmission distance is up to 30 meters. Visible light signals are captured by surveillance cameras and processed by the cloud to achieve real-time event monitoring and identification, which forms the passive IoE network. It is demonstrated that the passive-IoE-based surveillance system can detect intrusion, theft, fire alarm, and distress signals quickly (30 ms) for 106 cycles. Moreover, the confidential information can be encrypted by SPVPs and accessed through a phone application. This universal scheme may have huge potential for the construction of safe and smart cities.

Improving Room-Temperature Li-Metal Battery Performance by In Situ Creation of Fast Li+ Transport Pathways in a Polymer-Ceramic Electrolyte

Composite polymer-ceramic electrolytes have shown considerable potential for high-energy-density Li-metal batteries as they combine the benefits of both polymers and ceramics. However, low ionic conductivity and poor contact with electrodes limit their practical usage. In this study, a highly conductive and stable composite electrolyte with a high ceramic loading is developed for high-energy-density Li-metal batteries. The electrolyte, produced through in situ polymerization and composed of a polymer called poly-1,3-dioxolane in a poly(vinylidene fluoride)/ceramic matrix, exhibits excellent room-temperature ionic conductivity of 1.2 mS cm-1 and high stability with Li metal over 1500 h. When tested in a Li|electrolyte|LiFePO4 battery, the electrolyte delivers excellent cycling performance and rate capability at room temperature, with a discharge capacity of 137 mAh g-1 over 500 cycles at 1 C. Furthermore, the electrolyte not only exhibits a high Li+ transference number of 0.76 but also significantly lowers contact resistance (from 157.8 to 2.1 Ω) relative to electrodes. When used in a battery with a high-voltage LiNi0.8 Mn0.1 Co0.1 O2 cathode, a discharge capacity of 140 mAh g-1 is achieved. These results show the potential of composite polymer-ceramic electrolytes in room-temperature solid-state Li-metal batteries and provide a strategy for designing highly conductive polymer-in-ceramic electrolytes with electrode-compatible interfaces.

A UV-Reflective Organic-Inorganic Tandem Structure for Efficient and Durable Daytime Radiative Cooling in Harsh Climates

Radiative cooling shows great promise in eco-friendly space cooling due to its zero-energy consumption. For subambient cooling in hot humid subtropical/tropical climates, achieving ultrahigh solar reflectance (≥96%), durable ultraviolet (UV) resistance, and surface superhydrophobicity simultaneously is critical, which, however, is challenging for most state-of-the-art scalable polymer-based coolers. Here an organic-inorganic tandem structure is reported to address this challenge, which comprises a bottom high-refractive-index polyethersulfone (PES) cooling layer with bimodal honeycomb pores, an alumina (Al₂ O₃ ) nanoparticle UV reflecting layer with superhydrophobicity, and a middle UV absorption layer of titanium dioxide (TiO₂ ) nanoparticles, thus providing thorough protection from UV and self-cleaning capability together with outstanding cooling performance. The PES-TiO₂ -Al₂ O₃ cooler demonstrates a record-high solar reflectance of over 0.97 and high mid-infrared emissivity of 0.92, which can maintain their optical properties intact even after equivalent 280-day UV exposure despite the UV-sensitivity of PES. This cooler achieves a subambient cooling temperature up to 3 °C at summer noontime and 5 °C at autumn noontime without solar shading or convection cover in a subtropical coastal city, Hong Kong. This tandem structure can be extended to other polymer-based designs, offering a UV-resist but reliable radiative cooling solution in hot humid climates.

Dissolvable Topical Formulations for Burst and Constant Delivery of Vitamin C

Healthy skin has a high vitamin C concentration that protects against ultraviolet (UV)-induced damage, promotes wound healing, and lowers cancer risk. The present contribution describes two drug delivery systems for topical administration of vitamin C. The electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofiber carrier of vitamin C exhibits a burst release profile (66 mg/g/h followed by 6.3 mg/g/h). In comparison, a new composite PVA nanofiber-molecular capsule delivers vitamin C at a constant rate (8.2 mg/g/h) with a zeroth-order release profile for better therapeutic management. Both delivery systems protect vitamin C and afford increased heat stability. The molecular capsules of β-cyclodextrin with the vitamin C inclusion complex are immobilized on cellulose acetate and electrosprayed onto an electrospun PVA nanofiber mat.
