Na3V2(PO4)3 Cathode for Room-Temperature Solid-State Sodium-Ion Batteries: Advanced In Situ Synchrotron X-ray Studies to Understand Intermediate Phase Evolution

Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) can use elements that are abundantly present in Earth's crust and are technologically feasible for replacing lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Hence, NIBs are essential components for sustainable energy storage applications. All-solid-state sodium batteries are among the most capable substitutes to LIBs because of their potential to have low price, great energy density, and consistent safety. Nevertheless, more advancements are needed to improve the electrochemical performance of the Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cathode for NIBs, especially with regard to rate performance and operational lifespan. Herein, a core-shell NVP/C structure is accomplished by adopting a solid-state method. The initial reversible capacity of the NVP/C cathode is 106.6 mAh/g (current rate of C/10), which approaches the theoretical value (117.6 mAh/g). It also exhibits outstanding electrochemical characteristics with a reversible capacity of 85.3 mAh/g at 10C and a cyclic retention of roughly 94.2% after 1100 cycles. Using synchrotron-based operando X-ray diffraction, we present a complete examination of phase transitions during sodium extraction and intercalation in NVP/C. To improve safety and given its excellent ionic conductivity and broad electrochemical window, a Na superionic conductor (NASICON) solid electrolyte (Na3.16Zr1.84Y0.16Si2PO12) has been integrated to obtain an all-solid-state NVP/C||Na battery, which provides an exceptional reversible capacity (95 mAh/g at C/10) and long-term cycling stability (retention of 78.3% after 1100 cycles).

Advancements in Quasi-Solid-State Li Batteries: A Rigid Hybrid Electrolyte Using LATP Porous Ceramic Membrane and Infiltrated Ionic Liquid

Despite the progress made in Li-ion battery components, technology still faces major challenges. Among them, the development of novel electrolytes with promising characteristics is required for next-generation energy storage devices. In this work, rigid hybrid electrolytes have been prepared by infiltration of an ionic liquid solution (Pyr14TFSI) with a lithium salt (LiTFSI) into a sintered LATP ion-conducting porous ceramic. The porous ceramic 3D network was obtained via solid-state sintering of LATP powders mixed with a small amount of corn starch as pore former. A synergetic effect between the ionic liquid and support was evidenced. The resultant quasi-solid-state hybrid electrolytes exhibit high ionic conductivity (∼10-3 S·cm-1 at 303 K), improved ion transfer number, tLi+, and a wide electrochemical window of 4.7-4.9 V vs Li+/Li. The LATP porosity plays a critical role in the free Li+ charge because it favors higher TFSI- confinement in the ceramic interfaces, which consequently positively influences tLi+ and ionic conductivity. Electrochemical tests conducted at room temperature for Li/LiFePO4 cells using the hybrid electrolyte exhibited a high capacity of 150 mAh·g-1LFP at C/30, and still retained 60 mAh·g-1LFP at 1 C, while bare LATP does not perform well at low temperatures. These findings highlight this hybrid electrolyte as a superior alternative to the ceramic LATP electrolyte and a safer option compared with conventional organic electrolytes.

Molecular Recognition of Glycan-Bearing Glycomacromolecules Presented at Membrane Surfaces by Lectins: An NMR View

Lectin-glycan interactions are at the heart of a multitude of biological events. Glycans are usually presented in a multivalent manner on the cell surface as part of the so-called glycocalyx, where they interact with other entities. This multivalent presentation allows us to overcome the typical low affinities found for individual glycan-lectin interactions. Indeed, the presentation of glycans may drastically impact their binding by lectins, highly affecting the corresponding binding affinity and even selectivity. In this context, we herein present the study of the interaction of a variety of homo- and heteromultivalent lactose-functionalized glycomacromolecules and their lipid conjugates with two human galectins. We have employed as ligands the glycomacromolecules, as well as liposomes decorated with those structures, to evaluate their interactions in a cell-mimicking environment. Key details of the interaction have been unravelled by NMR experiments, both from the ligand and receptor perspectives, complemented by cryo-electron microscopy methods and molecular dynamics simulations.

Plasma-Derived Fibrin Hydrogels Containing Graphene Oxide for Infections Treatment

Wound infection is inevitable in most patients suffering from extensive burns or chronic ulcers, and there is an urgent demand for the production of bactericidal dressings to be used as grafts to restore skin functionalities. In this context, the present study explores the fabrication of plasma-derived fibrin hydrogels containing bactericidal hybrids based on graphene oxide (GO). The hydrogels were fully characterized regarding gelation kinetics, mechanical properties, and internal hydrogel structures by disruptive cryo scanning electron microscopies (cryo-SEMs). The gelation kinetic experiments revealed an acceleration of the gel formation when GO was added to the hydrogels in a concentration of up to 0.2 mg/mL. The cryo-SEM studies showed up a decrease of the pore size when GO was added to the network, which agreed with a faster area contraction and a higher compression modulus of the hydrogels that contained GO, pointing out the critical structural role of the nanomaterial. Afterward, to study the bactericidal ability of the gels, GO was used as a carrier, loading streptomycin (STREP) on its surface. The loading content of the drug to form the hybrid (GO/STREP) resulted in 50.2% ± 4.7%, and the presence of the antibiotic was also demonstrated by Raman spectroscopy, Z-potential studies, and thermogravimetric analyses. The fibrin-derived hydrogels containing GO/STREP showed a dose-response behavior according to the bactericidal hybrid concentration and allowed a sustained release of the antibiotic at a programmed rate, leading to drug delivery over a prolonged period of time.

Electronically reconfigurable and conformal triband antenna for wireless communications systems and portable devices

This paper presents the design of a triband antenna that can be electronically configured to operate at different frequencies. The proposed antenna is design to operate at sub-6GHz bands at 2.45 GHz (ISM, Wi-Fi, and WLAN), 3.3, 3.5 & 3.9 GHz (WiMAX), and 4.1 & 4.9 GHz (4G & 5G). This is achieved by connecting two open-ended stubs to a modified triangular patch radiator using PIN diodes. The antenna's performance was optimized using a 3D electromagnetic solver and its performance was verified through measurements. Moreover, the conformal analysis done on the antenna shows that the proposed technique can be used in moderately flexible wireless devices without compromising the antenna's gain, radiation efficiency and radiation patterns. These characteristics makes the proposed antenna applicable for various wireless communication systems and devices.

Experimental Characterization Framework for SLA Additive Manufacturing Materials

Additive manufacturing (AM) is driving a change in the industry not only regarding prototyping but due to the ease of including printed parts in final designs. Engineers and designers can go deeper into optimization and improvements of their designs without drawbacks of long manufacturing times. However, some drawbacks such as the limited available materials or uncertainty about mechanical properties and anisotropic behavior of 3D printed parts prevent use in large-scale production. To gain knowledge and confidence about printed materials it is necessary to know how they behave under different stress states and strain-rate regimes, and how some of the printing parameters may affect them. The present work proposes an experimental methodology framework to study and characterize materials printed by stereolithography (SLA) to clarify certain aspects that must be taken into account to broaden the use of this kind of material. To this end, tensile and compression tests at different strain rates were carried out. To study the influence of certain printing parameters on the printed material behavior, samples with different printing angles (θ = [0-90]) and different printing resolution (layer height of 50 and 100 µm) were tested. In addition, the effects of curing time and temperature were also studied. The testing specimens were manufactured in the non-professional SLA machine Form 2 from Formlabs® using resin called Durable. Nevertheless, the proposed experimental methodology could be extended to any other resin.

Polymeric Materials with Antibacterial Activity: A Review

Infections caused by bacteria are one of the main causes of mortality in hospitals all over the world. Bacteria can grow on many different surfaces and when this occurs, and bacteria colonize a surface, biofilms are formed. In this context, one of the main concerns is biofilm formation on medical devices such as urinary catheters, cardiac valves, pacemakers or prothesis. The development of bacteria also occurs on materials used for food packaging, wearable electronics or the textile industry. In all these applications polymeric materials are usually present. Research and development of polymer-based antibacterial materials is crucial to avoid the proliferation of bacteria. In this paper, we present a review about polymeric materials with antibacterial materials. The main strategies to produce materials with antibacterial properties are presented, for instance, the incorporation of inorganic particles, micro or nanostructuration of the surfaces and antifouling strategies are considered. The antibacterial mechanism exerted in each case is discussed. Methods of materials preparation are examined, presenting the main advantages or disadvantages of each one based on their potential uses. Finally, a review of the main characterization techniques and methods used to study polymer based antibacterial materials is carried out, including the use of single force cell spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and surface roughness to evaluate the role of the physicochemical properties and the micro or nanostructure in antibacterial behavior of the materials.

Tracking collective cell motion by topological data analysis

By modifying and calibrating an active vertex model to experiments, we have simulated numerically a confluent cellular monolayer spreading on an empty space and the collision of two monolayers of different cells in an antagonistic migration assay. Cells are subject to inertial forces and to active forces that try to align their velocities with those of neighboring ones. In agreement with experiments in the literature, the spreading test exhibits formation of fingers in the moving interfaces, there appear swirls in the velocity field, and the polar order parameter and the correlation and swirl lengths increase with time. Numerical simulations show that cells inside the tissue have smaller area than those at the interface, which has been observed in recent experiments. In the antagonistic migration assay, a population of fluidlike Ras cells invades a population of wild type solidlike cells having shape parameters above and below the geometric critical value, respectively. Cell mixing or segregation depends on the junction tensions between different cells. We reproduce the experimentally observed antagonistic migration assays by assuming that a fraction of cells favor mixing, the others segregation, and that these cells are randomly distributed in space. To characterize and compare the structure of interfaces between cell types or of interfaces of spreading cellular monolayers in an automatic manner, we apply topological data analysis to experimental data and to results of our numerical simulations. We use time series of data generated by numerical simulations to automatically group, track and classify the advancing interfaces of cellular aggregates by means of bottleneck or Wasserstein distances of persistent homologies. These techniques of topological data analysis are scalable and could be used in studies involving large amounts of data. Besides applications to wound healing and metastatic cancer, these studies are relevant for tissue engineering, biological effects of materials, tissue and organ regeneration.

Anapole Modes in Hollow Nanocuboid Dielectric Metasurfaces for Refractometric Sensing

This work proposes the use of the refractive index sensitivity of non-radiating anapole modes of high-refractive-index nanoparticles arranged in planar metasurfaces as a novel sensing principle. The spectral position of anapole modes excited in hollow silicon nanocuboids is first investigated as a function of the nanocuboid geometry. Then, nanostructured metasurfaces of periodic arrays of nanocuboids on a glass substrate are designed. The metasurface parameters are properly selected such that a resonance with ultrahigh Q-factor, above one million, is excited at the target infrared wavelength of 1.55 µm. The anapole-induced resonant wavelength depends on the refractive index of the analyte superstratum, exhibiting a sensitivity of up to 180 nm/RIU. Such values, combined with the ultrahigh Q-factor, allow for refractometric sensing with very low detection limits in a broad range of refractive indices. Besides the sensing applications, the proposed device can also open new venues in other research fields, such as non-linear optics, optical switches, and optical communications.

Infiltrated Photonic Crystal Fibers for Sensing Applications

Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are a special class of optical fibers with a periodic arrangement of microstructured holes located in the fiber's cladding. Light confinement is achieved by means of either index-guiding, or the photonic bandgap effect in a low-index core. Ever since PCFs were first demonstrated in 1995, their special characteristics, such as potentially high birefringence, very small or high nonlinearity, low propagation losses, and controllable dispersion parameters, have rendered them unique for many applications, such as sensors, high-power pulse transmission, and biomedical studies. When the holes of PCFs are filled with solids, liquids or gases, unprecedented opportunities for applications emerge. These include, but are not limited in, supercontinuum generation, propulsion of atoms through a hollow fiber core, fiber-loaded Bose⁻Einstein condensates, as well as enhanced sensing and measurement devices. For this reason, infiltrated PCF have been the focus of intensive research in recent years. In this review, the fundamentals and fabrication of PCF infiltrated with different materials are discussed. In addition, potential applications of infiltrated PCF sensors are reviewed, identifying the challenges and limitations to scale up and commercialize this novel technology.
