Understanding voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy effect at Co/oxide interface

The voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect is a key to realising high-speed, ultralow-power consumption spintronic devices. The fcc-Co-(111)-based stack is a promising candidate for the achievement of large VCMA coefficients. However, only a few studies on the fcc-Co-(111)-based stack have been reported and the VCMA effect has not been well understood. Previously, we observed a significant increase in the voltage-controlled coercivity (VCC) in the Pt/Ru/Co/CoO/TiO_x structure upon post-annealing. However, the mechanism underlying this enhancement remains unclear. This study performs multiprobe analyses on this structure before and after post-annealing and discusses the origin of the VCMA effect at the Co/oxide interface. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurement revealed an increase in the orbital magnetic moment owing to post-annealing, accompanied by a significant increase in VCC. We speculate that the diffusion of Pt atoms into the vicinity of Co/oxide interface enhances the interfacial orbital magnetic moment and the VCMA at the interface. These results provide a guideline for designing structures to obtain a large VCMA effect in fcc-Co-(111)-based stacks.

Imperceptible magnetic sensor matrix system integrated with organic driver and amplifier circuits

Artificial electronic skins (e-skins) comprise an integrated matrix of flexible devices arranged on a soft, reconfigurable surface. These sensors must perceive physical interaction spaces between external objects and robots or humans. Among various types of sensors, flexible magnetic sensors and the matrix configuration are preferable for such position sensing. However, sensor matrices must efficiently map the magnetic field with real-time encoding of the positions and motions of magnetic objects. This paper reports an ultrathin magnetic sensor matrix system comprising a 2 × 4 array of magnetoresistance sensors, a bootstrap organic shift register driving the sensor matrix, and organic signal amplifiers integrated within a single imperceptible platform. The system demonstrates high magnetic sensitivity owing to the use of organic amplifiers. Moreover, the shift register enabled real-time mapping of 2D magnetic field distribution.

Imaging of local structures affecting electrical transport properties of large graphene sheets by lock-in thermography

The distribution of defects and dislocations in graphene layers has become a very important concern with regard to the electrical and electronic transport properties of device applications. Although several experiments have shown the influence of defects on the electrical properties of graphene, these studies were limited to measuring microscopic areas because of their long measurement times. Here, we successfully imaged various local defects in a large area of chemical vapor deposition graphene within a reasonable amount of time by using lock-in thermography (LIT). The differences in electrical resistance caused by the micrometer-scale defects, such as cracks and wrinkles, and atomic-scale domain boundaries were apparent as nonuniform Joule heating on polycrystalline and epitaxially grown graphene. The present results indicate that LIT can serve as a fast and effective method of evaluating the quality and uniformity of large graphene films for device applications.
