Electron Structure Tuned Oxygen Vacancy-Rich AuPd/CeO2 for Enhancing 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Oxidation

The design of high activity catalyst for the efficiently conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) gains great interest. The rationally tailoring of electronic structure directly affects the interaction between catalysts and organic substrates, especially molecular oxygen as the oxidant. This work, the bimetallic catalysts AuPd/CeO2 were prepared by the combining method of chemical reduction and photo-deposition, effectively concerting charge between Au and Pd and forming the electron-rich state of Au. The increasing of oxygen vacancy concentration of CeO2 by acidic treatment can facilitate the adsorption of HMF for catalysts and enhance the yield of FDCA (99.0 %). Moreover, a series of experiment results combining with density functional theory calculation illustrated that the oxidation performance of catalyst in HMF conversion was strongly related to the electronic state of interfacial Au-Pd-CeO2. Furthermore, the electron-rich state sites strengthen the adsorption and activation of molecular oxygen, greatly promoting the elimination of β-hydride for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA) to FDCA, accompanied with an outgoing FDCA formation rate of 13.21 mmol ⋅ g-1 ⋅ min-1 at 80 °C. The perception exhibited in this research could be benefit to understanding the effects of electronic state for interfacial sites and designing excellent catalysts for the oxidation of HMF.

Opportunities of MXenes in Heterogeneous Catalysis: V2C as Aerobic Oxidation Catalyst

MXenes are two-dimensional nanomaterials having alternating sheets of one atom-thick early transition metal layer and one atom-thick carbide or nitride layer. The external surface contains termination groups, whose nature depends on the etching agent used in the preparation procedure from the MAX phase. The present concept proposes that, due to their composition, the metal-surface termination groups make MXenes particularly suited as heterogeneous catalysts for some reactions. This proposal comes from the consideration that early transition metal atoms bonded to hydroxyl and oxo groups are a general type of active sites in heterogeneous catalysis and that similar catalytic centers can also be present in the MXene structure. After having presented the concept, we have selected V2C Mxene as an example to illustrate its catalytic activity and to show how the catalytic performance varies when the surface groups are modified. As a test reaction, we selected the aerobic oxidation of indane to the corresponding indanol/indanone mixture using molecular oxygen as terminal oxidizing reagent. Two previously reported procedures to modify the surface groups, namely surface dehydroxylation by thermal treatment under diluted hydrogen flow and surface oxidation with ammonium persulfate to convert some surface groups into oxo groups were used, observing in both cases a decrease in the catalytic activity of V2C. Based on this, VIII/IV-OH are proposed as catalytic centers in this aerobic oxidation. Overall, the present concept shows the merits of MXenes in heterogeneous catalysis, based on their chemical composition and the surface functionality.

Contaminant transformation during sediment oxygenation: Temporal variation of oxidation mechanisms mediated by hydroxyl radicals and aerobic microbes

Sediment oxidation by oxygen is ubiquitous, whereas the mechanisms of concurrent contaminant oxidation, particularly the temporal variation of chemical and biological oxidation, remain inadequately understood. This study investigated the oxidation of two contaminants (phenol and trichloroethylene) with different responses during the oxygenation of four natural sediments with different redox properties. Results showed that contaminant oxidation was initially dominated by hydroxyl radicals (•OH) (first stage), stabilized for different time for different sediments (second stage), and was re-started by microbial mechanism (third stage). In the first short stage, the contribution of chemical oxidation by •OH was mainly determined by the variation of sediment electron-donating capacity (EDC). In the second long stage, the stabilization time was dependent on sediment redox properties, that is, the abundance and growth of aerobic microbes capable of degrading the target contaminants. A more reduced sediment resulted in a higher extent of oxidation by •OH and a longer stabilization time. When the third stage of aerobic microbial oxidation was started, the contaminants like phenol that can be utilized by microbes can be oxidized quickly and completely, and those refractory contaminants like trichloroethylene remained unchanged. The study differentiates chemical and biological mechanisms for contaminant oxidation during sediment oxygenation.

Synthesis rifaximin with copper (Rif-Cu) and copper oxide (Rif-CuO) nanoparticles Considerable dye decolorization: An application of aerobic oxidation of eco-friendly sustainable approach

In this study, rifaximin with copper (Cu) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesised. The resultant CuO nanoparticles were used to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) and Coomassie Brilliant Blue (G250). Rifaximin copper and copper oxide nanoparticles were characterised using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and gas chromatography-electrochemical mass spectrometry (GC-EI-MS). An FT-IR study confirmed the formation of Cu in the 562 cm-1 peak range. Rifaximin Cu and CuO Nanoparticles displayed UV absorption peaks at 253 nm and 230 nm, respectively. Coomassie Brilliant Blue G250 was completely decolourised in Cu nanoparticles at 100 %, and Rhodamine B was also decolourised in Rifaximin CuO nanoparticles at 73 %, although Coomassie Brilliant Blue G250 Rifaximin Cu nanoparticles absorbed a high percentage of dye decolorization. The aerobic oxidation of isopropanol conversion was confirmed by GC-MS analysis. Retention time of 27.35 and 30.32 was confirmed using Cu and CuO nanoparticles as the final products of 2-propanone. It is used in the textile and pharmaceutical industries for aerobic alcohol oxidation. Rifaximin CuO nanoparticles highly active in aerobic oxidation. The novelty of this study is that, for the first time, rifaximin was used for the synthesis of copper and copper oxide nanoparticles, and it successfully achieved decolorization and aerobic oxidation.

Oxygen vacancy regulation strategy in V-Nb mixed oxides catalyst for enhanced aerobic oxidative desulfurization performance

Bimetallic oxide is a potential catalyst for oxidative desulfurization of fuel. Thus, an appropriate method is needed to improve its catalytic performance. Manufacturing defect is an effective means. In this contribution, an oxygen vacancies (OVs) regulation strategy for enhancing the catalytic activity of bimetallic oxide is proposed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the crystal phase has a huge influence on the generation energy of oxygen vacancies, so a series of V-Nb mixed oxide with different crystal phases are synthesized. Detailed characterizations show that the as-prepared tetragonal V-Nb mixed oxide (T-VNbO_x) has lower OVs formation energy and larger OVs concentration (compared to orthorhombic V-Nb mixed oxides, O-VNbO_x). Owing to the activation of OVs, the catalytic activity of T-VNbO_x was significantly enhanced to form ultra-deep oxidative desulfurization. In addition, T-VNbO_x can be cycled eight times without significantly degrading the desulfurization performance.

SbCl3 Initiated Aerobic Phosphorylation of sp3 C-H Bond: A Facile Approach to α-Phosphorylated Tetrahydroisoquinolines

An aerobic phosphorylation of N-aryltetrahydroisoquinolines was realized by SbCl 3 initiated sp 3 C-H bond functionalization, providing a series of α-aminophosphonates in high yields. This work reveals that SbCl 3 /O 2 is an efficient and facile catalyst system to enable the aerobic C-H functionalization, and antimony containing reagents might be potentially applied to more general transformations.

Selective photocatalytic oxidation of sulfides with dioxygen over carbazole-fluorene conjugated microporous polymers

One sustainable concept emerges to implement the selective oxidation of sulfides with dioxygen (O₂) at ambient conditions and has received increasing attention. As such, three donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) were connected via robust CC bonds prepared from FeCl₃-promoted polymerization of monomers of 3,6-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-9H-fluorene with the 9H position of the fluorene moiety occupied by 1,1'-biphenyl-, difluoro-, or keto- group, furnishing 9,9'-(9,9'-spirobi[fluorene]-2,7-diyl)-bis-9H-carbazole-CMP (SFC-CMP), 9,9'-(9,9-difluoro-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(9H-carbazole)-CMP (FFC-CMP), and 2,7-di(carbazol-9-yl)-fluoren-9-one-CMP (OFC-CMP), respectively. These three carbazole-fluorene CMPs could implement blue light-driven highly selective oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides with O₂ in methanol (CH₃OH). Intriguingly, the SFC-CMP imparted the best photocatalytic activity for selective oxidation of sulfides in a broad scope. Besides, the SFC-CMP photocatalyst could be fully recovered even outperforming the fresh one. This work highlights that the properties of CMPs could be regulated by the D-A units like carbazole-fluorene to execute selective chemical transformations ambiently.

Designed polymeric conjugation motivates tunable activation of molecular oxygen in heterogeneous organic photosynthesis

Photocatalytic oxidative organic reactions are important synthetic transformations, and research on reaction selectivity by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is significant. To date, however, there has rarely been any focus on the directed generation of ROSs. Herein, we report the first identification of tunable molecular oxygen activation induced by polymeric conjugation in nonmetallic conjugated microporous polymers (CMP). The conjugation between these can be achieved by the introduction of alkynyl groups. CMP-A with an alkynyl bridge facilitates the intramolecular charge mobility while CMP-D, lacking an alkynyl group enhances the photoexcited carrier build-up on the surface from diffusion. These different processes dominate the directed ROS generation of the superoxide radical (O₂^-) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂), respectively. This theory is substantiated by the different performances of these CMPs in the aerobic oxidation of sulfides and the dehydrogenative coupling of amines, and could provide insight into the rational design of CMPs for various heterogeneous organic photosynthesis.

Hydrazone-linked 2D porphyrinic covalent organic framework photocatalysis for visible light-driven aerobic oxidation of amines to imines

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently gained rising consideration for visible light photocatalysis. Their property could be accurately established with specific reactions in which the most investigated one turns out to be the aerobic oxidation of amines. In this contribution, a hydrazone-linked 2D (two-dimensional) porphyrinic COF, Por-DETH-COF, was assembled from 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-benzaldehyde)porphyrin (p-Por-CHO) and 2,5-diethoxyterephthalohydrazide (DETH) and its photocatalytic activity was duly appraised with the aerobic oxidation of amines. Thereby, the red light-driven selective oxidation of benzyl amines to imines was obtained in very high conversions and selectivities with ambient air as the oxidant. Importantly, the photocatalytic system exhibited remarkable compatibility of functional groups and extensive scope of benzyl amines. Notably, the Por-DETH-COF photocatalyst displayed outstanding recyclability after five successive cycles. This work suggests that 2D COFs could contribute a unique juncture for selective organic transformations by photocatalysis.

Synergistic catalysis within core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 functionalized with triethylene glycol (TEG)-imidazolium ionic liquid and tetramethylpiperidine N-oxyl (TEMPO) boosting selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols

HYPOTHESIS

It is expected that incorporation of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetra-methyl piperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and an imidazolium bromide bearing hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) groups on Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ core-shell may not only result in a novel highly water-dispersible/magnetically separable multi-functional catalyst system for metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols, which operates through a synergistic relay pathway, but it could potentially provide a strong platform for simultaneous separation and recycling of all components.

EXPERIMENTS

The catalyst was prepared by anchoring TEMPO moieties onto a magnetic core-shell Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ functionalized with an ionic liquid bearing TEG groups. The materials was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated and quantitatively measured in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water.

FINDINGS

The catalyst exhibited excellent and stable colloidal dispersion in water and high performance in the aerobic oxidation of various types of alcohols under metal- and halogen-free reaction conditions. As hypothesized, strong synergistic effect between functionalized components was seen in the described reaction. The catalyst displayed excellent dual-adjustable-selectivity in the oxidation of primary alcohols to either the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids by tuning the reaction solvent and/or reaction time and excellent recycling behavior through a "double-separation-strategy".

Organotellurium catalysis-enabled utilization of molecular oxygen as oxidant for oxidative deoximation reactions under solvent-free conditions

Catalyzed by commercially available (PhTe)₂, molecular oxygen could be utilized as the mild, cheap and safe oxidant for oxidative deoximation reactions under solvent-free conditions. As the first report on organotellurium-catalyzed deoximation reaction, this work not only provides an efficient deoximation method, but also discloses new features of tellurium catalyst different from those of the organoselenium catalysts.

Data on the convenient fabrication of carbon doped WO3-x ultrathin nanosheets for photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of amines at room temperature

The oxidation of amines to imines is an important chemical transformation. In this article, we report original data on the synthesis of carbon doped WO_3−x ultrathin nanosheets via an acid-assisted one-pot process, which exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity in the aerobic oxidation of amines to corresponding imines under visible light irradiation at room temperature. The composition, microstructure, morphology, photocatalytic activity of the corresponding samples and possible mechanism are included here.

Density functional theory study of selective aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane: the roles of acetic acid and cobalt ion

A computational study of cyclohexane autoxidation and catalytic oxidation to a cyclohexyl hydroperoxide intermediate (CyOOH), cyclohexanol, and cyclohexanone has been conducted using a hybrid density functional theory method. The activation of cyclohexane and O₂ is the rate-determining step in the formation of CyOOH due to its relatively high energy barrier of 41.2 kcal/mol, and the subsequent reaction behavior of CyOOH controls whether the production of cyclohexanol or cyclohexanone is favored. Using CH₃COOH or (CH₃COO)₂Co as a catalyst reduces the energy barriers required to activate cyclohexane and O₂ by 4.1 or 7.9 kcal/mol, respectively. Employing CH₃COOH improves the CyOOH intramolecular dehydration process, which favors the formation of cyclohexanone. The energy barrier to the decomposition of CyOOH to CyO·, an important precursor of cyclohexanol, decreases from 35.5 kcal/mol for autoxidation to 25.9 kcal/mol for (CH₃COO)₂Co catalysis. (CH₃COO)₂Co promotes the autoxidation process via a radical chain mechanism. The computational results agree with experimental observations quite well, revealing the underlying role of CH₃COOH and Co ion in cyclohexane oxidation. Graphical abstract Through DFT analysis of cyclohexane autoxidation and catalytic oxidation, we reveal the mechanism of the effects of CH₃COOH and Co²⁺ on the reaction routes.

The Use of Molecular Oxygen for Liquid Phase Aerobic Oxidations in Continuous Flow

Molecular oxygen (O₂) is the ultimate “green” oxidant for organic synthesis. There has been recent intensive research within the synthetic community to develop new selective liquid phase aerobic oxidation methodologies as a response to the necessity to reduce the environmental impact of chemical synthesis and manufacture. Green and sustainable chemical processes rely not only on effective chemistry but also on the implementation of reactor technologies that enhance reaction performance and overall safety. Continuous flow reactors have facilitated safer and more efficient utilization of O₂, whilst enabling protocols to be scalable. In this article, we discuss recent advancements in the utilization of continuous processing for aerobic oxidations. The translation of aerobic oxidation from batch protocols to continuous flow processes, including process intensification (high T/p), is examined. The use of “synthetic air”, typically consisting of less than 10% O₂ in N₂, is compared to pure O₂ (100% O₂) as an oxidant source in terms of process efficiency and safety. Examples of homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous (packed bed) catalysis are provided. The application of flow photoreactors for the in situ formation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) for use in organic reactions, as well as the implementation of membrane technologies, green solvents and recent reactor solutions for handling O₂ are covered.

Selective Oxidation of Exogenous Substrates by a Bis-Cu(III) Bis-Oxide Complex: Mechanism and Scope

Cu(III)₂(μ-O)₂ bis-oxides (O) form spontaneously by direct oxygenation of nitrogen-chelated Cu(I) species and constitute a diverse class of versatile 2e^-/2H⁺ oxidants, but while these species have attracted attention as biomimetic models for dinuclear Cu enzymes, reactivity is typically limited to intramolecular ligand oxidation, and systems exhibiting synthetically useful reactivity with exogenous substrates are limited. O _tmpd (TMPD = N ¹ , N ¹ , N ³ , N ³ -tetramethylpropane-1,3-diamine) presents an exception, readily oxidizing a diverse array of exogenous substrates, including primary alcohols and amines selectively over their secondary counterparts in good yields. Mechanistic and DFT analyses suggest substrate oxidation proceeds through initial axial coordination, followed by rate limiting rotation to position the substrate in the Cu(III) equatorial plane, whereupon rapid deprotonation and oxidation by net hydride transfer occurs. Together, the results suggest the selectivity and broad substrate scope unique to O _tmpd are best attributed to the combination of ligand flexibility, limited steric demands, and ligand oxidative stability. In keeping with the absence of rate limiting C-H scission, O _tmpd exhibits a marked insensitivity to the strength of the substrate C^α-H bond, readily oxidizing benzyl alcohol and 1 octanol at near identical rates.

Tuning the Synthesis of Manganese Oxides Nanoparticles for Efficient Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

The liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol is an important reaction for generating benzaldehyde and benzoic acid that are largely required in the perfumery and pharmaceutical industries. The current production systems suffer from either low conversion or over oxidation. From the viewpoint of economy efficiency and environmental demand, we are aiming to develop new high-performance and cost-effective catalysts based on manganese oxides that can allow the green aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol under mild conditions. It was found that the composition of the precursors has significant influence on the structure formation and surface property of the manganese oxide nanoparticles. In addition, the crystallinity of the resulting manganese nanoparticles was gradually improved upon increasing the calcination temperature; however, the specific surface area decreased obviously due to pore structure damage at higher calcination temperature. The sample calcined at the optimal temperature of 600 °C from the precursors without porogen was a Mn3O4-rich material with a small amount of Mn2O3, which could generate a significant amount of [Formula: see text] species on the surface that contributed to the high catalytic activity in the oxidation. Adding porogen with precursors during the synthesis, the obtained catalysts were mainly Mn2O3 crystalline, which showed relatively low activity in the oxidation. All prepared samples showed high selectivity for benzaldehyde and benzoic acid. The obtained catalysts are comparable to the commercial OMS-2 catalyst. The synthesis-structure-catalysis interaction has been addressed, which will help for the design of new high-performance selective oxidation catalysts.

Direct and Efficient Dehydrogenation of Tetrahydroquinolines and Primary Amines Using Corona Discharge Generated on Ambient Hydrophobic Paper Substrate

The exposure of an aqueous-based liquid drop containing amines and graphite particles to plasma generated by a corona discharge results in heterogeneous aerobic dehydrogenation reactions. This green oxidation reaction occurring in ambient air afforded the corresponding quinolines and nitriles from tetrahydroquinolines and primary amines, respectively, at >96% yields in less than 2 min of reaction time. The accelerated dehydrogenation reactions occurred on the surface of a low energy hydrophobic paper, which served both as container for holding the reacting liquid drop and as a medium for achieving paper spray ionization of reaction products for subsequent characterization by ambient mass spectrometry. Control experiments indicate superoxide anions (O₂^•-) are the main reactive species; the presence of graphite particles introduced heterogeneous surface effects, and enabled the efficient sampling of the plasma into the grounded analyte droplet solution. Surface-active ionic liquids in catalysis: Impact of structure and concentration on the aerobic oxidation of octanol in water

We present design and synthesis of surface-active ionic liquids for the application in micellar catalysis. A series of 1-methyl-3-dodecylimidazolium based ionic liquids with variable core structures including dicationic and zwitterionic ones was synthesized and characterized. These surface-active ionic liquids where applied in the aerobic oxidation of aliphatic alcohols to carbonyl compounds. A strong dependence on the ionic liquid concentration and structure was identified, which is in accordance with the concepts of micellar catalysis. Optimum conditions for the oxidation of 1-octanol could be identified, and the use of surface-active ionic liquids strongly improved the reaction performance compared to pure water. Under optimized conditions, it was possible to isolate up to 75% of octanoic acid using only small amounts of surface-active ionic liquid in a 0.05mM solution in water without further ligands.

A highly stereoselective synthesis of C-24 and C-25 oxysterols from desmosterol

A new highly stereoselective construction of the side chain of the C-24 and C-25 oxysterols has been achieved by using desmosterol acetate as the starting material and an improved Sharpless catalytic asymmetric dihydroxylation with 100% d.e. (diastereomeric excess) as the key step. The result is much better than the usual asymmetric dihydroxylation procedure. t-Butyl nitrite/2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine N-oxyl radical/FeCl3 catalyst system was developed to activate molecular oxygen for the aerobic oxidation of 24-hydroxycholesterol and the 24-ketocholesterol was obtained in 86.2% yield. The oxidation system has never been reported before. The mechanism for the catalytic aerobic oxidation was also proposed.

Copper(II) complexes as catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of o-phenylenediamine to 2,3-diaminophenazine

Two new mononuclear copper(II) complexes [Cu (L) (NO3)2] (1) and [Cu (L) Br2] (2) where (L=bis(1-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)ether) are synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, UV-Visible, IR spectroscopy, EPR and cyclic voltammetry. The complexes exhibit different coordination structures; the E1/2 value of the complex (1) is found to be relatively more cathodic than that of complex (2). X-band EPR spectra at low temperature in DMF supports a tetragonally distorted complex (1) while complex (2) shows three different g values suggesting a rhombic geometry. These complexes were utilized as a catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of o-phenylenediamine to 2,3-diaminophenazine assisted by molecular oxygen. The initial rate of reaction is dependent on the concentration of Cu(II) complex as well as substrate, and was found to be higher for the nitrate bound complex, while presence of acetate anion acts as a mild inhibitor of the reaction, as it is likely to pick up protons generated during the course of reaction. The inhibition suggests that the generated protons are further required in another important catalytic step.

Aerobic oxidation of starch catalyzed by isopolyoxovanadate Na4Co(H2O)6V10O28

The partial oxidation of starch was achieved in the presence of oxygen with Na4Co(H2O)6V10O28·18H2O (abbreviated as CoV10) as catalyst. The oxidation degree of starch was determined by FT-IR, XRD and SEM measurements, which indicated that the aerobic oxidation of starch was promoted by oxidative catalyst CoV10. The application of CoV10 could give a high oxidation degree (DO) of 1.35 COOH/100 GU and 2.07 CO/100 GU with 86 wt.% yield of solid starch under mild reaction conditions (pH=6; reaction time, 8 h; temperature, 50 °C; catalyst amount, 8 mg, when 1.5 g starch was used as substrate; atmospheric pressure). Among some vanadium compounds, CoV10 exhibited 4-fold activity higher than orthovanadate due to its coordination effect of cobalt and V10O28. Meanwhile, CoV10 could be recycled for six times with only a slight decrease in activity. Thus, CoV10/O2 is one of the most efficient systems for partial oxidation of starch reported so far.
