Antimicrobial and Antiviral Activities of Durable Cotton Fabrics Treated with Nanocomposite Based on Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles, Acyclovir, Nanochitosan, and Clove Oil

In this study, cotton fabrics based on zinc oxide nanoparticles in situ synthesis, acyclovir, nanochitosan, and clove oil were treated. The treated cotton fabrics were examined by FTIR, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, EDAX, and the surface roughness processing of FE-SEM images. The obtained characterization data emphasized the nano-size of nanocomposite with high homogeneity of particles in spherical shape as well as affirmed the deposition of nanocomposite onto the textile fibers with concluded that the deposition of nanocomposite was increased parallel with sonication time. Antimicrobial and antiviral activities of treated cotton fabrics were evaluated. Results revealed that treated cotton fabrics exhibited promising antibacterial activity toward Gram-positive higher than Gram-negative bacteria. Likewise, treated cotton fabrics are still effective as antibacterial after washing for 100 cycles. Moreover, treated cotton fabrics exhibited potential antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus fumigatus. The antiviral activity significantly depended on the type of virus. The treated cotton fabrics showed antiviral activity against tested viral particles (HSV-1, Adeno, and CoxB2) with viral inhibition of 95.9, 76.4, and 86.9% respectively, while in the case of coated cotton textile with acyclovir, it only exhibited viral inhibition of 49.9, 41, and 22.3% respectively.

Cradle-to-grave environmental impact assessment of silver enabled t-shirts: Do nano-specific impacts exceed non nano-specific emissions?

Consumption of silver nanoparticles (nAg) is increasing due to their use in various industries. A comprehensive analysis is needed to elucidate the potential environmental and human health benefits and costs of the silver-enabled consumer products. For this purpose, four commercially available silver/nanosilver enabled polyester textiles with different initial silver/nanosilver loadings (1.07-4030 μg Ag/g textile) are included in the current research and cradle-to-grave life cycle assessments (LCA) are conducted to identify hotspots associated with production and use of these products throughout their lifetimes (100 cycles). Both non nano-specific and nano-specific impacts are calculated using nano-specific ecotoxicity characterization factors for nAg, instead of the commonly utilized ionic silver (Ag⁺) surrogate. Additionally, four different laundering scenarios were modeled to analyze the impacts resulting from using conventional and high efficiency machines. In the majority of environmental impact categories, either polyester textile manufacturing (regardless of Ag/nAg enabling) or laundering were identified as hotspots. Non nano-specific ecotoxicity impacts ranged from 1.58 × 10¹-2.91 × 10¹ CTUe/textile (CTUe: comparative toxic units for ecosystems) and nano-specific ecotoxicity impacts ranged from 2.01 × 10^-4-3.10 × 10^-3 CTUe/textile for the lowest and the highest Ag/nAg containing textiles, respectively. It is also found that unless the initial silver loading per textile is significantly high (in this case 4030 μg Ag/g textile comparing to the lowest load of 1.07 μg Ag/g textile), ecotoxicity and human health impacts of released silver species would be lower than ecotoxicity and human health impacts resulting from raw materials acquisition and manufacturing of the antibacterial textiles.

Graphene oxide-silver nanocomposites embedded nanofiber core-spun yarns for durable antibacterial textiles

Antibacterial textiles, which effectively inhibit bacterial breeding and resist pathogenic diseases, have wide applications in medicine, hygiene, and related fields. However, traditional antibacterial textiles exhibit significant limitations, such as poor antibacterial durability and contamination during preparation. In this work, nanofiber yarn loaded with a high-efficiency antibacterial agent was prepared using electrospinning technology. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was introduced as a solubilizing material to functionalize graphene oxide (GO) to form GO-PEI composites. A facile microwave heating method was used to synthesize GO-PEI and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). A multi-needle conjugated electrospinning device was used to blend the nanofibers with the GO-PEI-Ag composite to form a nanofiber core-spun yarn. The antibacterial agent was firmly fixed on the fiber to prevent easy removal. A uniformly oriented yarn structure and internal morphology were observed, and the antibacterial activity of the fabric was measured. The antibacterial rate of the fabric was over 99.99%for both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. After ten washes, the antibacterial rate remained above 99.99%. Thus, nanofiber fabric from electrospinning displays high antibacterial activity and excellent durability, thereby providing a feasible methodology for future production of antibacterial textiles.

Capping 1,3-propanedithiol to boost the antibacterial activity of protein-templated copper nanoclusters

We have prepared copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) in the presence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and 1,3-propanedithiol (PDT). The PDT/BSA-Cu NCs possess great activities against different types of bacteria, including non-multidrug-resistant bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus) and multidrug-resistant bacteria (methicillin-resistant S. aureus). Their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values are at least 242-fold and 10-fold lower than that of the free PDT and BSA-Cu NCs, respectively. The PDT/BSA-Cu NCs are strongly bound to the bacterial membrane, in which they induce the generation of ascorbyl (Asc) and perhydroxyl (HOO) radicals that result in disruption of their membrane integrity. At a concentration of 100-fold higher than their MIC for Escherichia coli, the PDT/BSA-Cu NCs exhibit negligible cytotoxicity towards the tested mammalian cells and show insignificant hemolysis. We have further demonstrated that low-cost PDT/BSA-Cu NCs-coated carbon fiber fabrics (CFFs) are effective against antibacterial growth, showing their great potential for antifouling applications.

Making the hospital a safer place by sonochemical coating of all its textiles with antibacterial nanoparticles

The ability to scale-up the sonochemical coating of medical textiles with antibacterial nanoparticles is demonstrated in the current paper. A roll-to-roll pilot installation to coat textiles was built taking into consideration the requirements of the sonochemical process. A long-run experiment was conducted in which 2500 m of fabric were coated with antibacterial ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). The metal oxide NPs were deposited from an ethanol:water solution. In this continuous process a uniform concentration of coated NPs over the length/width of the fabric was achieved. The antibacterial efficiency of the sonochemically-coated textiles was validated in a hospital environment by a reduction in the occurrence of nosocomial infections. NP-coated bed sheets, patient gowns, pillow cover, and bed covers were used by 21 patients. For comparison 16 patients used regular textiles. The clinical data indicated the reduced occurrence of hospital-acquired infections when using the metal oxide NP-coated textiles. In order to reduce the cost of the coating process and considering safety issues during manufacturing, the solvent (ethanol:water) (9:1 v:v) used for the long-run experiment, was replaced by water. Although lesser amounts of ZnO NPs were deposited on the fabric in the water-based process the antibacterial activity of the textiles was preserved due to the smaller size of the particles.

Salicylic acid and some of its derivatives as antibacterial agents for viscose fabric

Salicylic acid and three of its derivatives were used to provide antibacterial properties to viscose fabrics. The four bactericides used were bonded to the viscose fabrics using epichlorohydrin or polymer binders. Optimization of the salicylic acid and its derivatives as well as the concentration of polymers was reported. The ability of the polymer binders to attract and bind the four bactericides was observed. The overall results show that the antibacterial reactivity of salicylic acid and its derivatives are in the following order 5-bromosalicylic acid>salicylic acid>5-chlorosalicylic acid>4-chlorosalicylic acid. Using epichlorohydrin as a binding agent, unfortunately, inhibits the bactericidal activity of the four bactericides. The FTIR study concludes that the reaction between salicylic acid as well as its derivatives with epichlorohydrin takes place through the phenolic group of the acids. The unexpected deterioration in the bactericidal properties of salicylic acid and its derivatives as a result of the treatment with epichlorohydrin could be due to the nature of interaction between the epichlorohydrin molecule and the acids molecules. PVP and PU show superior ability to sustain the four bactericides used even after 10 washing cycles.
