Lignin-functionalized cobalt for catalytic reductive degradation of organic dyes in simple and hybrid binary systems

To fulfill the unprecedented valorization approaches for lignocellulose, this work focuses on the potential of lignin-derived catalytic systems for bio-remediation, which are natural materials perceived to address the increased demand for eco-conscious catalyzed processes. A useful lignin-functionalized cobalt (Lig-Co) catalyst has been prepared, well-characterized and deployed for the catalyzed reducing decomposition of stable harmful organic pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), in simple and binary systems. The multifunctional character of lignin and the presence of various active sites can promote effectively loaded metal nanoparticles (NPs). Considerably, optimizing detoxification tests showed that the uncatalyzed use of NaBH4 as a reductive agent led to an incomplete reduction of organic contaminants over a long period of up to 65 min. Interestingly, Lig-Co catalyst exhibited a high reduction rate and turnover frequency of up to 99.23% and 24.12 min-1 for MB, respectively, while they reached 99.25% and 26.21 min-1 for MO at normal temperature. Kinetically quick catalytic reaction was also demonstrated for the hybrid system, in which the rate constant k was 0.175 s-1 and 0.165 s-1 for MB and MO, respectively, within a distinctly low reaction time of around 120 s. The reproducibility of the Lig-Co catalyst induces a desirable capacity to reduce stable dyes present simultaneously in the binary system, with 6 successive catalytic runs and over 80% of activity retained. Such robust findings underline the considerable interest in developing future lignin-mediated catalytic transformations and upscaling biomass-derived products, to meet the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives in various industries.

Efficient adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+ from groundwater by MgO-modified sludge biochar in single and binary systems

In this study, MgO-modified sludge biochar (1MBC) prepared from sewage sludge was successfully used as an efficient adsorbent to remove heavy metals from groundwater. The adsorption performance and mechanism of 1MBC on Cu2+ and Cd2+ were investigated in single and binary systems, and the contribution of different mechanisms was quantified. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms analysis revealed that the adsorption processes of Cu2+ and Cd2+ by 1MBC followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model in both systems, indicating that Cu2+ and Cd2+ were mainly controlled by chemisorption, and their theoretical maximum adsorption capacities were 240.36 and 219.06 mg·g-1, respectively. The results of the binary system showed that due to the competitive adsorption, the adsorption capacity of 1MBC for both heavy metals was lower than that of the single system, and the selective adsorption of Cu2+ was higher. The influencing variable experiments revealed that the adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+ by 1MBC had a wide pH adaption range and strong anti-interference ability to coexisting organics and ions. The adsorption mechanisms involved ion exchange (Cu: 47.39%, Cd: 53.17%), mineral precipitation (Cu: 35.31%, Cd: 24.18%), functional group complexation (Cu: 10.44%, Cd: 14.53%), and other possible mechanisms (Cu: 6.87%, Cd: 8.12%). Furthermore, 1MBC demonstrated excellent regeneration potential after five cycle times. Overall, the results have significant reference value for the practical application of removing heavy metals.

New and effective cassava bagasse-modified biochar to adsorb Food Red 17 and Acid Blue 9 dyes in a binary mixture

A promissory technic for reducing environmental contaminants is the production of biochar from waste reuse and its application for water treatment. This study developed biochar (CWb) and NH4Cl-modified biochar (MCWb) using cassava residues as precursors. CWb and MCWb were characterized and evaluated in removing dyes (Acid Blue 9 and Food Red 17) in a binary system. The adsorbent demonstrated high adsorption capacity at all pH levels studied, showing its versatility regarding this process parameter. The equilibrium of all adsorption experiments was reached in 30 min. The adsorption process conformed to pseudo-first-order kinetics and extended Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption process is physisorption, exhibiting exothermic and spontaneous characteristics. MCWb exhibited highly efficient and selective adsorption behavior towards the anionic dyes, indicating maximum adsorption capacity of 131 and 150 mg g-1 for Food Red 17 and Acid Blue 9, respectively. Besides, MCWb could be reused nine times, maintaining its original adsorption capacity. This study demonstrated an excellent adsorption capability of biochars in removing dyes. In addition, it indicated the recycling of wastes as a precursor of bio composts, a strategy for utilization in water treatment with binary systems. It showed the feasibility of the reuse capacity that indicated that the adsorbent may have many potential applications.

MIL-53(Al)@HC nanohybrid for bicomponent adsorption of ibuprofen and metsulfuron-methyl: Application of macro- and microscopic models and competition between contaminants

In this work, a hybrid was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment, metal-organic framework functionalized with hydrochar (MIL-53(Al)@HC) for the adsorption of two organic molecules Ibuprofen sodium salt and Metsulfuron-methyl, in binary system. The hybrid is composed of 71 wt% biomass and 29 wt% MOF. TGA, BET, FTIR, XRD and XPS characterization techniques were used to verify the hybridization of MIL-53(Al)@HC. The MIL-53(Al)@HC hybrid showed in situ MIL-53(Al) crystal growth capability. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the effect of pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorbate concentration, contact time and temperature effect. The results obtained under extreme conditions demonstrate that MIL-53(Al)@HC is an adsorbent capable of removing >98% of IBU and MTM in mixture at a concentration of 0.3 mM (68 ppm IBU and 115 ppm MTM). The pseudo-second order model adequately described the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium using the Sips and Freundlich models. The physico-statistical microscopic model (2-layer) corroborated the hypothesis of a multilayer adsorption proposed by the macroscopic Freundlich model. In the competition study between IBU and MTM, both antagonistic and synergistic effects were observed. In the thermodynamic study, positive values of (ΔH°) indicate that adsorption is endothermic in nature and that the dominant mechanism is physisorption. A mechanism of adsorption by hydrogen bridging and non-covalent π*-π adsorbate-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbate-adsorbate interactions was proposed. The desorption study shows that in 5 washing cycles MIL-53(Al)@HC is a recoverable material.

Preparation of sludge-cyanobacteria composite carbon for synergistically enhanced co-removal of Cu(II) and Cr(VI)

Traditional sludge disposal is currently restricted by the risk of secondary pollution. Sludge carbon material has gained widespread attention because of its low cost and environmentally sustainable properties. However, owing to the high ash content and low-energy density of sludge, sludge pyrolysis alone has certain limitations, and the performance of carbon materials needs to be improved. Herein, a sludge-cyanobacteria composite carbon (SCC) was easily synthesized, and the adsorption process of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) by SCC was examined. SCC-700-2-50% exhibited a high S_BET (1047.54 m²/g) and developed pore structure rich in functional groups (such as -NH, -OH, and C-O). The combination of pore structure and functional groups improved the adsorption performance of SCC. The adsorption processes exhibited a synergistic effect in a binary system: the q_m of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) were 386 mg/g and 341 mg/g, respectively, and the selectivity of Cu(II) adsorption by SCC was greater than Cr(VI). The adsorption process, examined by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS analysis, indicated that Cu(II) as a cationic interface strengthens Cr(VI) adsorption through electrostatic interaction, and the anion Cr(VI) created a valid electrostatic shield against the electrostatic repulsion between H⁺ and Cu(II), facilitating Cu(II) adsorption. SCC had great reusability: Cu(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption capacity were 90% and 84%, of the initial adsorption capacity, respectively, after six cycles. This study demonstrates the prospect of SCC as a valid adsorbent for multiple heavy metal contaminations removal.

Dynamic regulation of Monascus azaphilones biosynthesis by the binary MrPigE-MrPigF oxidoreductase system

Monascus azaphilones (MAs) have been extensively applied as natural food coloring agents. MAs are classified into three categories: yellow MAs (YMAs), orange MAs (OMAs), and red MAs with various biological activities. However, the exact biosynthetic mechanism of OMAs and YMAs are not thoroughly elucidated. Firstly, we identified four DNA-binding residues of transcription factor MrPigB and constructed a multi-site saturation mutagenesis library of MrPigB. Then, comparative metabolite and gene expression of the mutants revealed that two oxidoreductases MrPigE and MrPigF were responsible for the formation of YMAs and OMAs. Finally, the in vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated the opposite roles of MrPigE and MrPigF in conversion of OMAs to YMAs. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a binary oxidoreductase system for dynamic regulation of fungal secondary metabolite biosynthesis. Broadly, our work also demonstrates the transcription factor engineering strategy for elucidating the biosynthetic pathway of secondary metabolite. Development of dexamethasone-loaded mixed polymeric micelles for nasal delivery

Our study aimed to formulate a novel dexamethasone (DXM)-loaded, mixed polymeric micelle-based drug delivery system, focusing on the auspicious nose-to-brain pathway, as a key delivery route to treat central nervous system (CNS) associated diseases. Polymeric micelles might be a solution to deliver drugs to the place of action compared to conventional formulations. Due to low Z-average (89.92 ± 2.7 nm), a polydispersity index of 0.216 ± 0.014 and high surface polarity (52.23%), a significant increase in water solubility (14-fold) was experienced. This increase resulted in favourable dissolution profile at nasal and axonal conditions with high in vitro permeability value (14.6×10^-6 cm/s) on polar brain (porcine) lipid extract. Modified Side-bi-side® type diffusion study confirmed rapid and efficient passive diffusion through the nasal mucosa contributed by strong mucoadhesive properties. The final formulation met all the requirements of a nasal drug delivery system with rapid onset of action, meaning DXM can reach the CNS and there it can exert its beneficial effects in pathological conditions.

Extrusion of wheat gluten-peanut oil complexes and their rheological characteristics

In order to clarify the effects of extrusion treatment on the processing properties of extrudates, providing a theoretical basis for the production of gluten-based extrudates with favorable sensory quality. This study examined the effects of various extrusion temperatures on the rheological properties of wheat gluten-peanut oil complexes (WPE) and wheat gluten (WG). At the extrusion temperature conditions of this study, the dynamic moduli of gluten in WG and WPE reached the maximum, and the creep strain reached a minimum at 160 °C. Extrusion treatment resulted in the decrease in β-sheet and α-helix content and an increase in the amount of β-turns and random coils. The secondary structural changes and increase in the number of disulfide bonds led to gluten aggregation, thus affecting their rheological properties. These results enhance our understanding of the variations in the rheological properties of extrudates and promote the potential application of gluten-based complexes in extrusion.

Investigation of mercury(II) and copper(II) sorption in single and binary systems by alginate/polyethylenimine membranes

This study investigates Hg(II) and Cu(II) sorption in single and binary systems by alginate/polyethylenimine membranes. Batch experiments are conducted to assess the metal sorption performance. FTIR and SEM-EDX analyses are used to identify metal binding mechanism. The sorption kinetics are better fitted by the pseudo-second-order-equation compared to the pseudo-first-order-equation. Three isotherms are compared for fitting the sorption in mono-component solutions and the Sips model gives the best simulation of experimental data. The competitive-Sips model fits well sorption data in Hg-Cu binary solutions and finds that the Cu uptake is drastically reduced by Hg competition. Copper(II) uptake remains negligible at low pH whereas it increases with pH up to 6 because of material deprotonation. Mercury(II) sorption behaves differently, it slightly changes from pH 1 (q_eq: 0.76 mmol g^-1) to pH 6 (q_eq: 0.84 mmol g^-1) due to chloro-anion formation. Therefore, playing with the pH allows separating Hg(II) from Cu(II).

Adsorptive removal of Ciprofloxacin and Amoxicillin from single and binary aqueous systems using acid-activated carbon from Prosopis juliflora

Adsorptive removal of emerging contaminants like antibiotics from aqueous systems having one or more antibiotics using acid activated carbon have rarely been studied and reported. Current study deals with the adsorptive removal of individual antibiotic species i.e. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Amoxicillin (AMX) from single (CIP and AMX) and binary (CIP + AMX) adsorption systems using acid activated carbon prepared from Prosopis juliflora wood (PPJ). Binary adsorption system involved the synergistic and antagonistic influence of one antibiotic over the adsorption of other antibiotic. Physico-chemical alterations of PPJ surface due to acid activation and after adsorption were characterized for any surface modification. Parameters influencing the efficient adsorption of CIP and AMX viz. Initial pH of antibiotic solution, dosage of PPJ, sorbent-sorbate incubation temperature and initial concentration of antibiotic species were optimized. Sorbate-sorbent interaction studies for single system revealed sorbate's monolayer formation over adsorbent's surface and the involvement of chemisorption as verified by Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order model respectively. For single system, Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of PPJ was 250 mg/g for CIP and 714.29 mg/g for AMX. Meanwhile, competitive Langmuir model was used to investigate adsorption capacity of individual antibiotics in binary system i.e. 370.37 mg/g for CIP and 482.14 mg/g for AMX thus verifying CIP has antagonistic effect on AMX adsorption and AMX has synergistic effect on CIP adsorption on PPJ surface. Recyclability studies verified the PPJ can be used up to 4 cycles and co-existing cationic and anionic salts had minimal effect on the adsorption of antibiotics over PPJ surface. Conclusively PPJ proved efficient in eliminating emerging contaminants like that of antibiotics and thus it can be exploited for other grades of pollutants.

Effect of neat and binary vehicle systems on the solubility and cutaneous delivery of piperine

Vitiligo is a skin disease characterized by depigmentation disorders due to lack of melanin production. Piperine, an alkaloid extracted from black piper, is active in melanocytes proliferation. To achieve this, the drug has to reach the melanocytes which exist in the deep layer of the epidermis. Higher drug concentration can be obtained after application of optimized formulation to skin. Accordingly, the aim of this work is to investigate the effect of vehicles on skin penetration of piperine as the first step in development of optimized formulation. The tested vehicles include ethanol (Eth), propylene glycol (PG), polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG), and oleic acid (OA) and their combinations. Water was used as the control and skin permeation was monitored using rabbit ear model skin. The highest piperine solubility (48.6 mg/ml) and flux (40.8 μg/cm² h) was achieved by Eth and the lowest piperine flux (1.17 μg/cm² h) was reported for PEG. PG and OA showed piperine flux values comparable to that of the control. Among different combination systems, Eth-OA (75:25) binary system had the highest piperine flux (59.3 μg/cm² h) followed by Eth-OA (50:50) (32.3 μg/cm² h) and PG-OA (90:10) (22.7 μg/cm² h). The study thus introduced a vehicle system as the first step in the development of topical formulation of piperine.

Evaluation of aluminum phthalocyanine chloride and DNA interactions for the design of an advanced drug delivery system in photodynamic therapy

The aim of this study was to evaluate the interaction of aluminum phthalocyanine chloride (AlClPc) with double-stranded DNA. Absorption and fluorescence spectra, resonance light scattering, and circular dichroism were evaluated in water and water/ethanol mixtures with different concentrations of DNA or AlClPc. AlClPc showed a high ability to bind to DNA in both water and 4/6 water/ethanol mixture (v/v), with a majority of monomeric and aggregated initial forms of AlClPc, respectively. In this interaction, AlClPc bound preferentially to the grooves of DNA. The monomeric/aggregate state of AlClPc in DNA was dependent on the AlClPc/DNA ratio. At low concentrations of AlClPc, the interaction of AlClPc with few DNA sites caused a curvature in the DNA structure that provided a favorable environment for the intercalation of AlClPc aggregates. Increase in AlClPc concentration induced interactions with a high number of binding sites on DNA, which prevented bending and therefore aggregation of AlClPc molecules throughout the double-stranded DNA. These results are relevant to the understanding of the behavior and interaction of AlClPc with double-stranded DNA in the design of novel drug delivery systems for clinical application in photodynamic therapy as a new approach to treat skin or oral cancer, scars, or wound healing.

Performance of synthesized cast and electrospun PVA/chitosan/ZnO-NH2 nano-adsorbents in single and simultaneous adsorption of cadmium and nickel ions from wastewater

The performance of synthesized cast and electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/zinc oxide/aminopropyltriethoxylsilane (PVA/chitosan/ZnO-APTES) nano-adsorbents were compared in removal of Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions from wastewater. The adsorbents were characterized by SEM, BET, FTIR and TGA analyses. Furthermore, the swelling investigations were carried out to study the adsorbent stability in aqueous solution. The effect of several parameters such as contents of ZnO-NH₂, contact time, initial Cd(II) and Ni(II) concentration and temperature on the adsorption capacity was investigated in a batch mode. In comparison with cast adsorbent, nanofiber adsorbent indicated the better adsorption performance. The experimental data well fitted the double-exponential kinetic model. In single metal ion system, the maximum adsorption capacity of nanofiber for Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions is estimated to be 1.239 and 0.851 mmol/g, respectively, much higher than q_m of cast adsorbent for Cd(II) (0.625 mmol/g) and Ni(II) (0.474 mmol/g) ions. Thermodynamic parameters were investigated to identify the nature of adsorption process. In binary system of Cd(II)-Ni(II) ions, the inhibitory effect of competitive Cd(II) ion on the Ni(II) adsorption was greater than the inhibitory effect of competitive on the Cd(II) adsorption. The selectivity adsorption of both nanofiber and cast adsorbents was in order of Cd(II) > Ni(II).

"One-sample concept" micro-combinatory for high throughput TEM of binary films

Phases of thin films may remarkably differ from that of bulk. Unlike to the comprehensive data files of Binary Phase Diagrams [1] available for bulk, complete phase maps for thin binary layers do not exist. This is due to both the diverse metastable, non-equilibrium or instable phases feasible in thin films and the required volume of characterization work with analytical techniques like TEM, SAED and EDS. The aim of the present work was to develop a method that remarkably facilitates the TEM study of the diverse binary phases of thin films, or the creation of phase maps. A micro-combinatorial method was worked out that enables both preparation and study of a gradient two-component film within a single TEM specimen. For a demonstration of the technique thin Mn_xAl_1-x binary samples with evolving concentration from x = 0 to x = 1 have been prepared so that the transition from pure Mn to pure Al covers a 1.5 mm long track within the 3 mm diameter TEM grid. The proposed method enables the preparation and study of thin combinatorial samples including all feasible phases as a function of composition or other deposition parameters. Contrary to known "combinatorial chemistry", in which a series of different samples are deposited in one run, and investigated, one at a time, the present micro-combinatorial method produces a single specimen condensing a complete library of a binary system that can be studied, efficiently, within a single TEM session. That provides extremely high throughput for TEM characterization of composition-dependent phases, exploration of new materials, or the construction of phase diagrams of binary films.

Who Discovered the Binary System and Arithmetic? Did Leibniz Plagiarize Caramuel?

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) is the self-proclaimed inventor of the binary system and is considered as such by most historians of mathematics and/or mathematicians. Really though, we owe the groundwork of today's computing not to Leibniz but to the Englishman Thomas Harriot and the Spaniard Juan Caramuel de Lobkowitz (1606-1682), whom Leibniz plagiarized. This plagiarism has been identified on the basis of several facts: Caramuel's work on the binary system is earlier than Leibniz's, Leibniz was acquainted-both directly and indirectly-with Caramuel's work and Leibniz had a natural tendency to plagiarize scientific works.
