Relationship between age, scrotal circumference, postweaning weight and semen quality in Nellore and Caracu bulls: a cross sectional study

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between age, scrotal circumference, postweaning weight and semen quality in Nellore and Caracu bulls selected for postweaning weight. Data from the andrological evaluation of 836 bulls born between 2000 and 2019, including 583 Nellore animals (Bos indicus) and 253 Caracu animals (Bos taurus), were used. The bulls were divided into categories of age at the time of assessment: category 1 consisted of animals aged 20 to 23 months (22 ± 0.76 months, 518 ± 94.17 kg), category 2 consisted of animals aged 24 to 35 months (30 ± 4.42 months, 679 ± 137.19 kg), and category 3 consisted of animals ≥ 36 months (60 ± 14.12 months, 907 ± 161.73 kg). The statistical model included the effects of breed, age category, date of semen collection, and breed x age category interaction. Heritability estimates for scrotal circumference at 13 months of age (SC1year) and semen quality traits were obtained for the sample of Nellore animals. Most semen quality traits improved with increasing age in both Nellore and Caracu animals. High heritability was observed for SC1year (0.45), while sperm motility, vigor, turbulence, and major, minor and total sperm defects exhibited low heritability (0.11, 0.019, 0.047, 0.017, 0.017 and 0.019, respectively). Spearman correlations of breeding values for postweaning weight (W378) and SC1year with the semen quality traits were low. Nellore and Caracu bulls have similar semen quality that improves with increasing age. In the Nellore breed, the heritability of SC is high, while semen quality traits exhibit low heritability. Selection for higher postweaning weight does not phenotypically affect the semen quality of bulls at breeding age.

Identification of an Elite Core Panel as a Key Breeding Resource to Accelerate the Rate of Genetic Improvement for Irrigated Rice

Rice genetic improvement is a key component of achieving and maintaining food security in Asia and Africa in the face of growing populations and climate change. In this effort, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) continues to play a critical role in creating and disseminating rice varieties with higher productivity. Due to increasing demand for rice, especially in Africa, there is a strong need to accelerate the rate of genetic improvement for grain yield. In an effort to identify and characterize the elite breeding pool of IRRI's irrigated rice breeding program, we analyzed 102 historical yield trials conducted in the Philippines during the period 2012-2016 and representing 15,286 breeding lines (including released varieties). A mixed model approach based on the pedigree relationship matrix was used to estimate breeding values for grain yield, which ranged from 2.12 to 6.27 t·ha^-1. The rate of genetic gain for grain yield was estimated at 8.75 kg·ha^-1 year^-1 (0.23%) for crosses made in the period from 1964 to 2014. Reducing the data to only IRRI released varieties, the rate doubled to 17.36 kg·ha^-1 year^-1 (0.46%). Regressed against breeding cycle the rate of gain for grain yield was 185 kg·ha^-1 cycle^-1 (4.95%). We selected 72 top performing lines based on breeding values for grain yield to create an elite core panel (ECP) representing the genetic diversity in the breeding program with the highest heritable yield values from which new products can be derived. The ECP closely aligns with the indica 1B sub-group of Oryza sativa that includes most modern varieties for irrigated systems. Agronomic performance of the ECP under multiple environments in Asia and Africa confirmed its high yield potential. We found that the rate of genetic gain for grain yield found in this study was limited primarily by long cycle times and the direct introduction of non-improved material into the elite pool. Consequently, the current breeding scheme for irrigated rice at IRRI is based on rapid recurrent selection among highly elite lines. In this context, the ECP constitutes an important resource for IRRI and NAREs breeders to carefully characterize and manage that elite diversity.

Estimates of genetic parameters and trends for reproduction traits in Bonga sheep, Ethiopia

Investigation was carried out to assess the effects of environmental factors and to estimate genetic parameters and trends for reproductive traits in Bonga sheep, Ethiopia. Animals used in this study were managed by two communities involved in a community-based breeding programs (CBBPs) from 2009 to 2018. The database consisted of 15,595 individual phenotypic information from about 1500 ewes with variable number of records for each trait. The traits analyzed were age at first lambing (AFL), lambing interval (LI), and litter size (LS). Fixed effect analysis was done using the general linear model procedures of SAS. The Average Information Restricted Maximum Likelihood method of WOMBAT, fitting univariate animalmodel, was used to estimate heritabilities, repeatabilities and breeding values. Results showed that Bonga sheep had overall mean AFL, LI, and LS of 453 ± 109 days, 254 ± 51 days, and 1.43 ± 0.008, respectively. All traits were influenced (p < 0.01) by lambing year, lambing season, breeder communities, and parity of ewes. Estimates of heritability for AFL, LI, and LS were 0.015 ± 0.143, 0.009 ± 0.070, and 0.085 ± 0.110, respectively. The low heritabilities for the traits are expected and indicate low possibility of achieving rapid genetic progress through phenotypic selection. The repeatability estimates for LI and LS were low (0.109 and 0.196, respectively) indicating that non-genetic factors had significant influence to the variation in these traits among parities; therefore, selection decision on ewes should consider repeated records. The genetic trend for AFL, LI, and LS over the years was significant (p < 0.01). Positive values for LS and negative for AFL and LI were recorded, implying that the well-structured CBBPs have resulted in measurable genetic gains for the reproductive traits.

Stabilizing selection and adaptive evolution in a combination of two traits in an arctic ungulate

Stabilizing selection is thought to be common in wild populations and act as one of the main evolutionary mechanisms, which constrain phenotypic variation. When multiple traits interact to create a combined phenotype, correlational selection may be an important process driving adaptive evolution. Here, we report on phenotypic selection and evolutionary changes in two natal traits in a semidomestic population of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in northern Finland. The population has been closely monitored since 1969, and detailed data have been collected on individuals since they were born. Over the length of the study period (1969-2015), we found directional and stabilizing selection toward a combination of earlier birth date and heavier birth mass with an intermediate optimum along the major axis of the selection surface. In addition, we demonstrate significant changes in mean traits toward earlier birth date and heavier birth mass, with corresponding genetic changes in breeding values during the study period. Our results demonstrate evolutionary changes in a combination of two traits, which agree closely with estimated patterns of phenotypic selection. Knowledge of the selective surface for combinations of genetically correlated traits are vital to predict how population mean phenotypes and fitness are affected when environments change.

Selection for intramuscular fat and lean meat yield will improve the bloomed colour of Australian lamb loin meat

The colour of bloomed m. longissimus was measured 24h post slaughter for 8165 lamb carcasses produced over 5years across 8 sites in Australia. Intramuscular fat across a 2 to 8% range and shortloin fat weight were positively associated with meat lightness (L*), redness (a*), yellowness (b*), hue and chroma (P<0.01). Shortloin muscle weight was negatively associated with these meat colour parameters (P<0.01), although this was largely accounted for by correlated changes in intramuscular fat (P<0.01). The effect of sire breeding values for lamb weight, shortloin muscle depth and fat depth on loin L*, a*, b*, hue and chroma were small and varied between lambs of different sire type, dam breed and sex. Thus selection for lean meat yield will have neutral or positive effects on meat colour, while selection for increased intramuscular fat will make the bloomed colour of lamb meat lighter and redder.

Genetic trends for live weight traits reflect breeding strategies in registered Charolais Farms in Mexico

Genetic trends are commonly used to verify genetic improvement; however, there are few reports on beef cattle in Mexico. Data from 1998 to 2013 from four Charolais bull breeding farms were examined to verify the genetic responses to different breeding management and selection criteria. Analysis included the comparison of regression lines of breeding values for birth (BW), weaning (WW) and yearling weights (YW), and maternal weaning weight (MWW) on the year of birth of the animals. Results revealed differential genetic progress for BW and YW and indicated that the overall analysis may have diluted the perception of genetic progress from the farmer's point of view. The use of breeding values as a tool for selection is effective to achieve genetic progress, even in negatively correlated traits, such as birth weight and yearling weight.

The contribution of dominance and inbreeding depression in estimating variance components for litter size in Pannon White rabbits

In a synthetic closed population of Pannon White rabbits, additive (VA ), dominance (VD ) and permanent environmental (VPe ) variance components as well as doe (bF d ) and litter (bF l ) inbreeding depression were estimated for the number of kits born alive (NBA), number of kits born dead (NBD) and total number of kits born (TNB). The data set consisted of 18,398 kindling records of 3883 does collected from 1992 to 2009. Six models were used to estimate dominance and inbreeding effects. The most complete model estimated VA and VD to contribute 5.5 ± 1.1% and 4.8 ± 2.4%, respectively, to total phenotypic variance (VP ) for NBA; the corresponding values for NBD were 1.9 ± 0.6% and 5.3 ± 2.4%, for TNB, 6.2 ± 1.0% and 8.1 ± 3.2% respectively. These results indicate the presence of considerable VD . Including dominance in the model generally reduced VA and VPe estimates, and had only a very small effect on inbreeding depression estimates. Including inbreeding covariates did not affect estimates of any variance component. A 10% increase in doe inbreeding significantly increased NBD (bF d  = 0.18 ± 0.07), while a 10% increase in litter inbreeding significantly reduced NBA (bF l  = -0.41 ± 0.11) and TNB (bF l  = -0.34 ± 0.10). These findings argue for including dominance effects in models of litter size traits in populations that exhibit significant dominance relationships.
