Aggregation-induced emission: An emerging concept in brain science

As an emerging concept in brain science, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has captivated much interest by virtue of the unique superiority of AIE fluorophores in terms of emission intensity, imaging resolution, biocompatibility and photosensitivity. This review mainly overviews the current state-of-art advances of AIE fluorophores achieving the superb performance in brain imaging and therapy, which facilitate deep tissue penetration, high contrast to autofluorescence and efficient blood-brain barrier (BBB) crossing by rational molecular design and functionalized strategies. We expect this review serve as a modest spur to push forward the blooming growth of research in this fertile field.

Photoacoustic imaging for monitoring of stroke diseases: A review

Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability after ischemic heart disease. However, there is lacking a non-invasive long-time monitoring technique for stroke diagnosis and therapy. The photoacoustic imaging approach reconstructs images of an object based on the energy excitation by optical absorption and its conversion to acoustic waves, due to corresponding thermoelastic expansion, which has optical resolution and acoustic propagation. This emerging functional imaging method is a non-invasive technique. Due to its precision, this method is particularly attractive for stroke monitoring purpose. In this paper, we review the achievements of this technology and its applications on stroke, as well as the development status in both animal and human applications. Also, various photoacoustic systems and multi-modality photoacoustic imaging are introduced as for potential clinical applications. Finally, the challenges of photoacoustic imaging for monitoring stroke are discussed.

Predictive value of the combination of lesion location and volume of ischemic infarction with rehabilitation outcomes

PURPOSE

In acute ischemic stroke, infarct location and volume have, separately, been used to determine long-term outcomes after stroke. Little information exists on the combination of these imaging characteristics on rehabilitation outcomes. We evaluated the association between infarct lesion location volume with the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) measure during inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) in ischemic stroke patients.

METHODS

Between 2012 and 2014, we prospectively enrolled consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients admitted from a Comprehensive Stroke Center and followed to an IRF in Chicago, Illinois. We adjudicated infarct volumes in specific lesion locations using a validated brain atlas. Volumes were calculated using an automated pipeline. FIM measure was extracted from IRF charts. We analyzed the association between acute infarct characteristics and functional measures using adjusted Spearman's correlation.

RESULTS

Among 162 stroke patients (mean age 67.6 years, 48.1% male, 58.6% Caucasian), the median FIM at IRF was 52 (IQR 36-62). In an adjusted analysis, infarct volumes in the left basal ganglia (r_s = - 0.45, p = 0.02) and left frontal lobe (r_s = - 0.38, p = 0.04) were negatively correlated with FIM scores.

CONCLUSIONS

There is an association between specific infarct lesion location volume and subsequent FIM scores assessed at IRF. Our findings suggest that imaging during index stroke hospitalization could be used to predict outcomes assessed during IRF.

Increased risk for complications following diagnostic cerebral angiography in older patients: Trends from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (1999-2009)

The full utility of diagnostic cerebral angiography, an invasive cerebrovascular imaging technique, is currently debated. Our goal was to determine trends in diagnostic cerebral angiography utilization and associated complications from 1999 through 2009. The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) was used to identify patients who received primary cerebral angiography from 1999-2009 in the United States. We observed trends in discharge volume, total mean charge, and post-procedural complications for this population. Data was based on sample projections and analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression. There were a total of 424,105 discharges indicating primary cerebral angiography nationwide from 1999-2009. The majority of these cases (65%) were in patients older than 55years. Embolic stroke was the most frequent complication, particularly in the oldest age bracket, occurring in 16,304 patients. The risk for complications increased with age (p<0.0001) and with other underlying health conditions. Pulmonary, deep vein thrombosis, and renal associated comorbidities resulted in the greatest risk for developing post-procedural complications. Throughout the study period case volume for cerebral angiography remained constant while total charge per patient increased from $17,365 in 1999 to $45,339 in 2009 (p<0.001). While the overall complication rate for this invasive procedure is relatively low, the potential risk for embolic stroke in older patients is significant. It is worth considering less invasive diagnostic techniques for an older and at risk patient population.
