Greenhouse gas emissions from Baltic coastal lakes

Coastal lakes (CL) act as limnetic-β-oligohaline systems located on non-tidal coastlines in fresh and salt water mixing zone. Owing to considerable terrestrial nutrient input and a high autochthonous productivity CLs release greenhouse gases (GHG) to the ambient atmosphere, however, neither emission from the system was assessed nor controls on the emission were recognized so far. In this study we attempted to quantify diffusive emissions of CH₄, CO₂ and N₂O from CLs based on data collected from seven lakes located on a south coast of the Baltic Sea in Poland. Lake water samples were collected with quarterly resolution along salinity, water depth and wind fetch gradients. From our data it emerged that the concentrations of GHGs were determined by temperature. CH₄ showed dependence on salinity, lake water depth and wind fetch. N₂O was controlled by dissolved O₂ and NO₃^- and CO₂ was largely related to wind fetch. It also appeared that concentrations of N₂O and CO₂ were influenced by terrestrial nutrient input. The mean fluxes of CH₄, CO₂ and N₂O for the whole system were 21.7 mg·m^-2·d^-1, 12.7 g·m^-2·d^-1 and 0.74 mg·m^-2·d^-1, respectively which was equivalent to 7.9 g CH₄·m^-2·y^-1, 4.6 kg CO₂·m^-2·y^-1 and 269 mg N₂O·m^-2·y^-1. CH₄ and N₂O were released throughout the year and CO₂ was predominantly emitted during winter. We showed that diffusive emissions of the GHGs showed relationships to the surface area of the lakes as well as the ratio of catchment area to lake area (CA/LA). The study would benefit from further extension with higher resolution analyses of the lakes over longer timescales and quantification of ebullitive GHG emission (CH₄ in particular).

Assessment of the metal pollution in surface sediments of coastal Tasaul Lake (Romania)

Forty-three surface sediment samples were collected in September 2019 from Tasaul Lake (Black Sea coast, Romania) to examine the metal distribution patterns, assess the level of metal contamination, and identify the pollutant sources. The determined mean metal concentrations were as follows: Al 49,772 mg/kg, Zn 84.40 mg/kg, Cr 83.70 mg/kg, V 76.45 mg/kg, Ni 42.53 mg/kg, Cu 34.27 mg/kg, Pb 26.30 mg/kg, As 12.49 mg/kg, and Hg 0.06 mg/kg. The metals in the surface sediments of Tasaul Lake displayed moderate spatial variation, with higher metal concentrations mainly occurring in the south and southeast (As, Pb, and Hg), southwest (Cu and Zn), and west of the lake (Cr, Ni, and V). Heavy metal contamination in sediments is assessed using pollution indices such as enrichment factor, contamination factor, and pollution load index. The highest CFs and EFs were determined for As (moderate to high pollution), followed by Pb (low to moderate pollution). The Cu, Zn, and Hg pollution indices showed values corresponding to low pollution levels, while Ni, Cr, and V presented the lowest indices, suggesting unpolluted sediments. Multivariate statistical analyses were performed to identify the origin of the analyzed heavy metals. Cr was predominantly sourced from lithogenic components, Ni and V originated from both natural and anthropogenic sources, and As, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Hg showed mainly anthropogenic sources such as agricultural runoff, domestic and industrial wastewater discharges, and quarrying activities.

Patterns of phytoplankton composition in coastal lakes differed by connectivity with the Baltic Sea

The study was aimed to analyse reactions of the major groups of phytoplankton to the mixing regime of fresh and brackish waters in coastal lakes and the associated changes in physicochemical properties of lake waters. For this purpose, on the basis of data collected from 6 coastal lakes located along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea, differing in intensity of intrusion of brackish sea water: limnetic, L (2), limnetic/oligohaline, L/O (2), and oligohaline, O (2), we assessed the associations of major phytoplankton groups with environmental conditions. Statistical analyses revealed that the structure of phytoplankton groups significantly differed among three lakes types, and the variation in these variables was best explained by water temperature, total phosphorus, salinity, PO₄^3-, transparency, dissolved oxygen, and NO₃^-. Relative phytoplankton biomass showed significant differences among the O-L/O-L lake types and formed the following proportion 1:2:3.5. Cyanobacteria constituted a dominant algae group in the lakes, showing the decreasing trend from 86.5% in the L to 69.3% in the O lakes. The indicator value analysis showed that all the studied lakes were dominated by algae preferring freshwater habitats, among which Cyanobacteria and Cryptophyta were indicator groups. Redundancy analysis showed that increasing salinity has got a negative effect on Cyanobacteria and Bacillariophyta biomass, and did not stimulate the development of any algal group. In the coastal lakes we observed 2 distinct stable states (limnetic and oligohaline) as well as transitional phases between them: (1) seaward drift (limnetic-oligohaline) with increasing salinity, and (2) landward drift (oligohaline-limnetic) with decreasing salinity. Algal communities showed the most distinct differences in biomass in limnetic and oligohaline states. These observations suggest that the structure and biomass of phytoplankton may respond gradually on the level of hydrological connectivity, or may respond abruptly creating two alternative stable states: limnetic and oligohaline.

New insight into defining the lakes of the southern Baltic coastal zone

There exist many classification systems of hydrographic entities such as lakes found along the coastlines of seas and oceans. Each system has its advantages and can be used with some success in the area of protection and management. This paper aims to evaluate whether the studied lakes are only coastal lakes or rather bodies of water of a completely different hydrological and hydrochemical nature. The attempt to create a new classification system of Polish coastal lakes is related to the incompleteness of lake information in existing classifications. Thus far, the most frequently used are classifications based solely on lake basin morphogenesis or hydrochemical properties. The classifications in this paper are based not only on the magnitude of lake water salinity or hydrochemical analysis but also on isolation from the Baltic Sea and other sources of water. The key element of the new classification system for coastal bodies of water is a departure from the existing system used to classify lakes in Poland and the introduction of ion-"tracking" methods designed to identify anion and cation distributions in each body of water of interest. As a result of the work, a new classification of lakes of the southern Baltic Sea coastal zone was created. Featured objects such as permanently brackish lakes, brackish lakes that may turn into freshwater lakes from time to time, freshwater lakes that may turn into brackish lakes from time to time, freshwater lakes that experience low levels of salinity due to specific incidents, and permanently freshwater lakes. The authors have adopted 200 mg Cl^- dm^-3 as a maximum value of lake water salinity. There are many conditions that determine the membership of a lake to a particular group, but the most important is the isolation lakes from the Baltic Sea. Changing a condition may change the classification of a lake.

210Pb, 137Cs and 7Be in the sediments of coastal lakes on the polish coast: Implications for sedimentary processes

In this study we combined radioisotopes (²¹⁰Pb, ¹³⁷Cs and ⁷Be) and hydrodynamic modeling to investigate sedimentary processes in three coastal lakes on the Polish Baltic coast. The research aimed at establishing the depth of sediment mixing and its effects on sediment geochemistry as well as showing the relationship between lake water salinity and radionuclide distribution in the sediment cores. We established that the intensity of mixing displayed appreciable variability throughout the lakes and the thickness of sediment mixing layer was between <2 and 22 cm. The mixing was primarily due to wind-induced waves. The vertical mixing was shown to shift sulfidation of the sediments towards deeper layers. We found that the distributions of radioisotopes, ¹³⁷Cs in particular, in the sediment cores from coastal lakes were strongly affected by the early diagenetic processes, which caused diffusive migration of radionuclides. The inventories of ²¹⁰Pb_ex and ¹³⁷Cs in the lakes were positively related to salinity. The high inventories of both isotopes (3.2-10.9 kBq ·m^-2 for ²¹⁰Pb_ex and 3.0-6.0 kBq·m^-2 for ¹³⁷Cs) in coastal lakes were explained by enhanced sedimentation within estuarine mixing zone and delivery of "additional" ²¹⁰Pb and ¹³⁷Cs to the lakes during saltwater ingressions. The results of this study have implications for the paleolimnology, sedimentology and biogeochemistry of coastal lakes.
