Abstract
In this work, a simple, convenient and cost-effective colorimetric aptasensor was successfully constructed for the detection of antibiotic residues in raw milk based on the property that aptamer (Apt) synergistically enhances the catalase-like activity of MOF-235. Under optimised conditions, the proposed colorimetric aptasensor exhibited a wide detection range (15-1500 nM) with a low detection limit (6.92 nM). Furthermore, the proposed aptasensor demonstrated high selectivity, good resistance to interference and storage stability. The proposed aptasensor was validated by spiking recovery in camel milk, cow milk and goat milk with satisfactory recoveries, which demonstrated the great potential of the aptasensor for further application in real food samples, and also suggested that MOF-235 can be used as a potential universal platform to build a sensitive detection platform for other targets.

Abstract
Given the highly mutagenic and carcinogenic nature of Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), the quantity assessment of AFM1 residues in milk and dairy products is necessary to maintain consumer health and food safety. Herein, CRISPR-Cas12a-based colorimetric aptasensor was developed using the catalytic activity of flower-like nanozymes of MnO2 and trans-cleavage property of CRISPR-Cas12a system to quantitatively detect AFM1. The basis of the developed colorimetric aptasensor relies on whether or not the CRISPR-Cas12a system is activated, as well as the contrast in oxidase-mimicking capability exhibited by flower-like MnO2 nanozymes when AFM1 is absent or present. When AFM1 is not present in the sample, single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) is degraded by the activated CRISPR-Cas12a, and the solution turns into yellow due to the catalytic activity of the nanozymes. While, in the attendance of AFM1, ssDNA degradation does not occur due to the inactivation of the CRISPR-Cas12a. Therefore, with the adsorption of the ssDNA on the MnO2 nanozymes, their catalytic activity decreases, and the solution color becomes pale yellow due to less oxidation of the chromogenic substrate. In this aptasensor, the relative absorbance changes increased linearly from 6 to 160 ng L-1, and the detection limit was 2.1 ng L-1. The developed aptasensor displays a selective detection performance and a practical application for quantitative analysis of AFM1 in milk samples. The results of the introduced aptasensor open up the way to design other selective and sensitive aptasensors for the detection of other mycotoxins by substitution of the used sequences.

Abstract
The combination of nanomaterials possessing distinct characteristics and the precision of aptamers facilitates the creation of biosensors that exhibit exceptional selectivity and sensitivity. In this manuscript, we present a highly sensitive aptasensor that utilizes the distinctive characteristics of MnO2 nanoflowers and gold nanoparticles to selectively detect ampicillin (AMP). In this aptasensor, the mechanism of signal change is attributed to the difference in the oxidase-mimicking activity of MnO2 nanoflowers in the presence of a free sequence. The inclusion of AMP hindered the creation of a double-stranded DNA configuration through its binding to the aptamer, resulting in an observable alteration in absorbance. The relative absorbance varied linearly with the concentration of AMP in the range of 70 pM to 10 nM with a detection limit of 21.7 pM. In general, the colorimetric aptasensor that has been developed exhibits exceptional selectivity and remarkable stability. It also demonstrates favorable performance in human serum, making it a highly reliable diagnostic tool. Additionally, its versatility is noteworthy as it holds great potential for detecting various antibiotics present in complex samples by merely replacing the utilized sequences with new ones.

Abstract
Escherichia coli O157: H7 (E. coli O157: H7) is one of the most common foodborne pathogens and is widespread in food and the environment. Thus, it is significant for rapidly detecting E. coli O157: H7. In this study, a colorimetric aptasensor based on aptamer-functionalized magnetic beads, exonuclease III (Exo III), and G-triplex/hemin was proposed for the detection of E. coli O157: H7. The functional hairpin HP was designed in the system, which includes two parts of a stem containing the G-triplex sequence and a tail complementary to cDNA. E. coli O157: H7 competed to bind the aptamer (Apt) in the Apt-cDNA complex to obtain cDNA. The cDNA then bound to the tail of HP to trigger Exo III digestion and release the single-stranded DNA containing the G-triplex sequence. G-triplex/hemin DNAzyme could catalyze TMB to produce visible color changes and detectable absorbance signals in the presence of H2O2. Based on the optimal conditions, E. coli O157: H7 could be detected down to 1.3 × 103 CFU/mL, with a wide linear range from 1.3 × 103 to 1.3 × 107 CFU/mL. This method had a distinguished ability to non-target bacteria, which showed good specificity. In addition, the system was successfully applied to detect E. coli O157: H7 in milk samples.

Abstract
Exosomes (50-150 nm) play significant biological functions in intercellular communication and transportation of diverse biomolecules, including proteins and nucleic acids. In particular, malignant exosomes have received a great deal of attention as possible indicators for cancer detection and treatment. To swiftly and precisely identify malignant exosomes from normal exosomes in diverse bodily fluids, we developed polydiacetylene (PDA)-based aptasensors with distinct optical features exhibiting color shift in response to biological recognition. To identify epithelial cell adhesion molecules (EpCAM) overexpressed on the surface of malignant exosomes, anti-EpCAM aptamer-conjugated diacetylene monomer (TCDA-Apt) was synthesized and used to create anti-EpCAM aptamer-conjugated PDA (anti-EpCAM Apt-PDA) vesicles. In just 15 min following the reaction with malignant exosomes, the anti-EpCAM Apt-PDA vesicles underwent a visible color change from blue to purple. They showed high specificity to EpCAM-positive malignant exosomes over non-malignant exosomes, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and fibrinogen. Moreover, its effectiveness in the point-of-care (POC) detection of malignant exosomes was evaluated using human sera. Therefore, our PDA-based aptasensors have tremendous potential for on-site cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
An efficient aptasensor was developed for the colorimetric determination of zearalenone (ZEN) based on polyvalent aptamer scaffold and light-responsive oxidase-like nanozyme. The sensitivity and efficiency of the development method were significantly improved owing to rich aptamers and signal labels (3, 4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, PCA) packed in the scaffold. The scaffold integrated functions of target recognition, surface immobilization and signal transduction. The photoresponsive nanoenzyme of TiO2-PCA was formed by PCA coordinated with Ti (IV) on the surface of TiO2. TiO2-PCA catalyzed dissolved oxygen rather than H2O2 to generate colorimetric signal by stimulating the chromogenic substrate, which made the assay greener and safer. The detection limit of colorimetric mode was 0.0087 ng/mL and the satisfactory recoveries 92.00 %-111.00 % were achieved in spiked food samples. This strategy opens new horizons for sensitive detection of small molecule hazards and promises to be a powerful tool for safeguarding food safety.

Abstract
Due to their superparamagnetism and enzyme-like activity, iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanozymes can be readily used for sample pretreatment and the generation of detection signals, and have, thus, attracted much attention in the field of bioanalysis and diagnosis. However, the low catalytic activity of Fe3O4 nanozymes does reduce the sensitivity of Fe3O4-based methods, limiting their application. In this study, Fe3O4@Cu@poly(pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid) yolk-shell nanozymes (Fe3O4@Cu@PCPy YSNs) were synthesized using a facile approach and selective chemical etching technology. Compared with Fe3O4 nanozymes, the Fe3O4@Cu@PCPy YSNs demonstrated a three-fold increase in the peroxidase-like activity, good dispersity and strong superparamagnetism. In addition, the flower-shaped structure of aptamer-complementary strand (Apt-CS) conjugates was designed on the surface of the Fe3O4@Cu@PCPy YSNs, which effectively inhibited their peroxidase-like activity by creating a physical barrier that hindered the access of substrates to the center of the Fe3O4@Cu@PCPy YSNs. Based on this principle, a robust and facile colorimetric aptasensor was developed for detecting Salmonella Typhimurium. The flower-shaped Apt-CS were dissociated in the presence of S. Typhimurium, promoting the recovery of Fe3O4@Cu@PCPy YSN catalytic activity. Under optimized conditions, this proposed aptasensor successfully detected S. Typhimurium in a linear range of 3 to 3 × 106 CFU/mL, achieving a detection limit of 1 CFU/mL. Finally, the feasibility of this novel aptasensor was further validated by three actual samples, with recoveries of between 84.3% and 102%, thereby demonstrating the huge potential of the proposed aptasensor for detecting S. Typhimurium in foods.

Abstract
In this study, a label-free aptasensor utilizing colorimetric properties was developed to detect Pb2+ with high sensitivity. The approach involved applying modified aptamer which enhanced the oxidase-mimicking activity of MnO2 nanoflowers. This innovative method provides an efficient means for monitoring Pb2+ ions without requiring any labeling techniques. The fundamental principle of this aptasensor is based on the adsorption of a modified aptamer onto MnO2 nanoflowers' surface, which in turn increases their affinity for chromogenic substrates and enhances their catalytic activity. The proposed aptasensor exploits the high sensitivity due to the extension of the aptamer sequence length by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT). Under optimum experimental conditions, the developed colorimetric aptasensor indicated a linear detection range from 4 to 80 nM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.4 nM. Moreover, the aptasensor successfully monitored Pb2+ in the drinking water, milk and human serum samples. Henceforth, the colorimetric aptasensor exhibited in this study possesses several benefits such as uncomplicated operation, cost-effectiveness, label-free detection and remarkable sensitivity. Thus rendering it a suitable option for analyzing intricate samples.

Abstract
Amyloid-beta peptide oligomer (Aβo) is widely acknowledged to be associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The immediate and accurate detection of Aβo may provide the index for tracking the progress of the state of the disease, as well as some useful information for investigating the pathology of AD. In this work, based on a triple helix DNA which triggers a series of circular amplified reactions in the presence of Aβo, we designed a simple and label-free colorimetric biosensor with dually-amplified signal for the specific detection of Aβo. The sensor displays some advantages including high specificity, high sensitivity, low detection limit down to 0.23 pM, and wide detection range with three orders of magnitude from 0.3472 to 694.44 pM. Furthermore, the proposed sensor was successfully applied for detecting Aβo in artificial and real cerebrospinal fluids with satisfactory results, suggesting the potential application of the proposed sensor for state-monitoring and pathological studies of AD.

Abstract
Aristolochic Acid I (AAI) is an environmental and foodborne toxin found in the Aristolochia and Asarum species of plants that are widespread all over the world. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a sensitive and specific biosensor for identifying AAI. Aptamers as a powerful biorecognition element provide the most viable options for solving this problem. In this study, we used library-immobilized SELEX to isolate an AAI-specific aptamer with a KD value of 86 ± 13 nM. To verify the practicability of the selected aptamer, a label-free colorimetric aptasensor was designed. This aptasensor exhibited a low detection limit of 225 nM. Besides, it had been further applied for the determination of AAI in real samples and the recoveries ranged from 97.9% to 102.4%. In the future, AAI aptamer will provide a promising tool for safety evaluation in various fields of agriculture, food, and medication.

Abstract
Exosomes derived from lung cancer typically contain the genetic information of the donor cells. Therefore, exosomes contribute to early diagnosis, treatment effectiveness evaluation, and prognosis assessment of cancer. Based on the biotin-streptavidin system and MXenes nanomaterial, a dual-effect amplification method had been developed to construct an ultrasensitive colorimetric aptasensor for detecting exosomes. MXenes can enhance the loading of aptamer and biotin as the high specific surface area. Biotin-streptavidin system can increase the amount of horseradish peroxidase-linked (HRP-linked) streptavidin, considerably boosting the color signal of the aptasensor. The proposed colorimetric aptasensor exhibited excellent sensitivity, with a detection limit of 42 particles μL-1 and a linear range of 102 to 107 particles μL-1. The constructed aptasensor showed satisfactory reproducibility, stability, and selectivity, confirming the promising application of exosomes in clinical cancer detection.

Abstract
Developing simultaneous detection methods for multiple targets is crucial for the field of food analysis. Herein, enrofloxacin (ENR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) were taken as model targets. For the first time, a strategy to generate group-specific split aptamers was established by revealing and splitting the critical binding domain, and the split aptamers were exploited to design a four-way DNA junction (4WJ) which could regulate the enzymatic activity of chitosan oligosaccharide (COS)-AuNPs nanozyme to develop a colorimetric aptasensor. A pair of split aptamers were obtained for ENR (Kd = 15.00 nM) and CIP (Kd = 4.870 nM). The mechanism of COS binding with double-stranded DNA in the 4WJ was elucidated. Under optimal conditions, the colorimetric aptasensor enabled a wide linear detection range of 1.4-1400 nM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 321.1 pM and 961.0 pM towards ENR and CIP, respectively, which exhibited excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and availability in detecting ENR/CIP in seafood. This study expands the general strategies for generating robust aptamers and nanozyme complex and provides a good reference for developing multi-target detection methods.

Abstract
The peroxidase-like activity of Ti3C2 nanosheets (Ti3C2 NSs) was evaluated by catalytic oxidation of colorless o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into orange-yellow 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with the aid of H2O2. The catalytic behavior followed the typical Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Systematic studies about the catalytic activity of Ti3C2 NSs including cytochrome C (Cyt C) electron transfer experiments, radical capture experiments, and fluorescence analysis were conducted, revealing that the catalytic mechanism of Ti3C2 NSs was attributed to nanozyme-accelerated electron transfer between substrates and nanozyme-promoted generation of active species (superoxide anion free radical (·O2-) and holes (h+)). Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) inhibited the peroxidase-like activity of Ti3C2 NSs, and the reduced catalytic activity was ascribed to DNA-hindered substrate accessibility to nanozyme surface. Based on the DNA controllable peroxidase-mimicking activity of Ti3C2 NSs, taking microcystin-LR (MC-LR) aptamer as an example, a label-free colorimetric aptasensor was proposed for the sensitive detection of MC-LR. The colorimetric aptasensor showed a wide linear range (0.01-60 ng mL-1), low limit of detection (6.5 pg mL-1), and high selectivity. The practicality of the colorimetric aptasensor was demonstrated by detecting different levels of MC-LR in spiked real water samples; satisfactory recoveries (97.2-102.1%) and low relative standard deviations (1.16-3.72%) were obtained.

Abstract
For the visual detection of four organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), a colorimetric aptasensor was developed based on aptamer-mediated bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nano-polymers. Fe-Co magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and Fe-N-C nanozymes were prepared based on pyrolytic reaction, and were labeled with broad spectrum aptamers and complementary chains of organophosphorus pesticides respectively. The hybridization of aptamers and complementary chains led to the formation of nano-polymers. In the presence of target pesticides, they competed with complementary chains for aptamers on Fe-Co MNPs, resulting in a large number of Fe-N-C nanozymes signal labels being released into the supernatant. Fe-N-C nanozymes showed similar activity to peroxidase and catalyzed the 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine-hydrogen peroxide (TMB-H2O2) color system to turn the solution blue-green under mild conditions. The magnetic probes had good selectivity and sensitivity, and were easily separated by magnetic absorption. The sensor functioned well under optimal conditions, demonstrating good stability and specificity for four pesticides: phorate, profenofos, isocarbophos and omethoate, and the detection limits of four pesticides were as low as 0.16 ng/mL, 0.16 ng/mL, 0.03 ng/mL and 1.6 ng/mL respectively, and the recovery rate of OPs residue in vegetable samples was satisfactory. The work described here provided a simple, rapid and sensitive way to construct a biosensor.

Abstract
ZEN-responsive hydrogel was prepared using ZEN aptamer and a cationic conjugated skeleton which was formed by the electrostatic interaction between acrylamide and poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). In the presence of ZEN, the binding of aptamer and ZEN caused the hydrogel to dissociate, releasing the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) encapsulated in the hydrogel into supernatant, whose color changes serving as response instructions were observed by eyes. To realize low dose visual detection, the TMB-H2O2 was used for quantitative readout by AuNPs released from the hydrogel which can efficiently catalyze the reaction to generate a obvious change. There was a good linear relationship between the changed absorbance and concentration of ZEN within 2.5-100 ng/mL, a detection limit of 0.98 ng/mL, recovery rates of 98.8%-101.3% and 99.8%-101.5% for corns and beer, respectively. This developed sensing strategy would provide a promising application for other mycotoxins by replacing the corresponding aptamer sequences.

Abstract
There has been a rise in pesticide use as a result of the growing industrialization of agriculture. Organophosphorus pesticides have been widely applied as agricultural and domestic pest control agents for nearly five decades, and they remain as health and environmental hazards in water supplies, vegetables, fruits, and processed foods causing serious foodborne illness. Thus, the rapid and reliable detection of these harmful organophosphorus toxins with excellent sensitivity and selectivity is of utmost importance. Aptasensors are biosensors based on aptamers, which exhibit exceptional recognition capability for a variety of targets. Aptasensors offer numerous advantages over conventional approaches, including increased sensitivity, selectivity, design flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. As a result, interest in developing aptasensors continues to expand. This paper discusses the historical and modern advancements of aptasensors through the use of nanotechnology to enhance the signal, resulting in high sensitivity and detection accuracy. More importantly, this review summarizes the principles and strategies underlying different organophosphorus aptasensors, including electrochemical, electrochemiluminescent, fluorescent, and colorimetric ones.

Abstract
In this study, a novel colorimetric bioassay method was developed for the sensitive determination of tobramycin (TOB). To detect TOB, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were decorated with TOB-specific aptamers (apt), and positively charged poly diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) was used. As long as tobramycin is not present in the assay system, PDDA can coalesce with the aptamer, and AgNPs would remain stable (λmax = 400 nm) in the dispersed system against PDDA-induced aggregation. When TOB is added, aptamer can bind to the compound, which leads to release of PDDA and subsequent aggregation of AgNPs (λmax = 540 nm). This remarkable change, as a colorimetric analytics signal, can be used for quantitative analysis of TOB. TOB can be detected by this highly sensitive colorimetric aptasensor with a limit of detection (LOD) of 70 pM. Furthermore, TOB can be detected with the naked eye at concentrations above 1 nM.

Abstract
In today's world, which is entangled with numerous foodborne pathogenic bacteria and viruses, it appears to be essential to rethink detection methods of these due to the importance of food safety in our lives. The vast majority of detection methods for foodborne pathogenic bacteria and viruses have suffered from sensitivity and selectivity due to the small size of these pathogens. Besides, these types of sensing approaches can improve on-site detection platforms in the fields of food safety. In recent, microfluidics systems as new emerging types of portable sensing approaches can introduce efficient and simple biodevice by integration with several analytical methods such as electrochemical, optical and colorimetric techniques. Additionally, taking advantage of aptamer as a selective bioreceptor in the sensing of microfluidics system has provided selective, sensitive, portable and affordable sensing approaches. Furthermore, some papers use increased data transferability ability and computational power of these sensing platforms by exploiting smartphones. In this review, we attempted to provide an overview of the current state of the recent aptasensor based on microfluidic for screening of foodborne pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Working strategies, benefits and disadvantages of these sensing approaches are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Zearalenone (ZEN) poses a serious threat to human and animal health. The development of sensitive determination methods for ZEN is of great significance for ensuring the quality and safety of food. Herein, based on a stimuli-responsive aptamer-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) nano-container and trivalent DNA peroxidase mimicking enzyme (DNAzyme), an efficient aptasensor was constructed initially for the colorimetric determination of ZEN. The proposed aptasensor only required simple operations but exhibited outstanding specificity, reproducibility, storage stability and reusability simultaneously. Under the optimal conditions, there was a good linear relationship between the changed absorbance and logarithm concentration of ZEN within 0.01-100 ng mL-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) could reach 0.36 pg mL-1. Moreover, the proposed aptasensor was reliable in quantifying ZEN in spiked food samples. The current bioassay provides a promising scheme for constructing stable, specific and rapid colorimetric platforms with potential applications in the fields of food safety.

Abstract
Herein, the split aptamers, chitosan oligosaccharide, and AuNPs were combined as nanocomposites that present different formations to develop a label-free colorimetric aptasensor for rapid detection of small molecules. Kanamycin was chosen as a model target. Computational studies were performed to assist in the design of orientated immobilization of the split aptamers onto the AuNPs surface. Chitosan oligosaccharide was initially applied as an aggregation inducer of AuNPs, and chitopentaose was screened as the optimal. Under optimized conditions, the proposed aptasensor showed high sensitivity and selectivity, with a limit of detection of 20.58 nM, a linear range of 25-800 nM, and good recoveries of 98.49-104.9% and 85.69-107.0% when employed to detect kanamycin in tap water and milk samples, respectively. Only 55 min was needed for the whole assay. More importantly, this study can serve as a novel and robust reference for the aptasensing detection of other small molecules.

Abstract
Saxitoxin (STX) is a small molecule toxin (Mw. ca. 299 g/mol) with high acute toxicity, and it has urgent need of facile analytical methods. Herein, a competitive colorimetric aptasensor was developed for highly sensitive detection of STX. An anti-STX aptamer was hybridized with a complementary strand on the magnetic beads and was competitively bound by STX. The supernatant containing the aptamer binding to STX was obtained by magnetic separation, which could trigger hybridization chain reaction (HCR) to generate rigid double stranded DNAs (dsDNAs) with sticky end and variable length. These HCR-dsDNAs were found to be able to facilitate significant enhancement on the peroxidase-like catalytic capability of AuNPs nanozyme towards 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The concentration of STX was responded in a "turn on" mode, based on the amplified colorimetric transduction thereof. The aptasensor realized high sensitivity, with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 42.46 pM. Moreover, a wide linear detection range of 78.13-2500 pM, good selectivity, as well as good recovery rates of 106.2-113.5% when analyzing STX in real shellfish samples were obtained. This strategy could be referred to develop robust aptasensors for simple and highly sensitive detection of other small molecules and toxins.

Abstract
A novel colorimetric aptasensor based on unmodified gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) and single-strand DNA (ssDNA) aptamer was developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of T-2 toxin. In the absence of T-2, the AuNPs were wrapped by the aptamer to avoid the salt-induced aggregation and the solution remains red. In the presence of T-2, the aptamer was bound with T-2 and released from the surface of AuNPs, resulting in the aggregation of AuNPs under proper salt solution and the color change from red to purple-blue. The aptasensor exhibited a high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of T-2. The range of linearity and detection limit were 0.1 ng/mL-5000 ng/mL (0.21435 nM-10717.5 nM) and 57.8 pg/mL (0.124 nM), respectively. The aptasensor developed here was applicable to assay T-2 in wheat and corn samples. These results implied that the colorimetric aptasensor was potentially useful in food detection.

Abstract
17β-estradiol (E2) residues could enrich in organisms via food chain and lead to harmful biological effects for human body. To ascertain the binding domain of original E2 aptamer (E00) with long-sequence (76-mer), we developed novel truncated aptamers from E00, through rationally designed truncation by intercepting a single ring or a combination of rings (containing hairpin loop, interior loop or multiloop) at different sites and retaining appropriate double helix regions. Through comparison, 15-mer E09 presented improved affinity and higher specificity, indicating the hairpin loop near to 3' end of E00 served on the binding domain to E2. E09 was used for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-based colorimetric determination of E2, achieved the detection limit of 0.02 μg/mL. The truncated aptamer (only 15-mer) first proposed in this study has great application potential in E2 determination, and this work provides proof-of-concept study for truncation of other long-sequence aptamers.

Abstract
A colorimetric aptasensor was developed for selective and sensitive detection of Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) based on the enhancement of bacteria for the peroxidase-like activity of dual aptamers modified bovine serum albumin stabilized-gold nanoclusters (aptamers@BSA-AuNCs). Micro-sized bacteria was found to be able to capture aptamers@BSA-AuNCs and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), thus promoting the proximity of aptamers@BSA-AuNCs to TMB and greatly increasing the local concentrations of the enzyme-mimetic nanoparticles and their substrate. As a result, addition of bacteria promoted the formation of blue products in the catalytic system, which was utilized to achieve bacteria detection by colorimetry. The parameters influencing the colorimetric aptasensor were optimized by an orthogonal test. Under the selected conditions, the aptasensor exhibited a wide linear response to S. typhimurium in the concentration range of 101-106 cfu mL-1 with a detection limit as low as 1 cfu mL-1. The feasibility of the aptasensor was verified by successful detection of S. typhimurium in egg samples with recoveries in the range of 92.4%-110%.

Abstract
In this colorimetric assay for sensitive detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA) tumor marker, adsorbed non-thiolated poly-Adenine aptamer (polyA Apt) on the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) surface was used. By incubating the AuNPs and the PSA specific aptamer prior to target addition, polyA Apt adsorbed on the gold nanoparticles and could bind the target while preventing non-specific interactions. Adsorbed polyA Apt on the AuNPs prevents aggregation of them by poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride) (PDDA). Upon the addition of PSA, it bind to the polyA Apt and induce the formation of a secondary structure. Therefore, interaction between polyA Apt and PDDA is repressed and PDDA induce the aggregation of the AuNPs. This analytical platform produces a remarkable optical signal in the absence and presence of PSA that accompanied by a color change from red to blue. This effect as a sensing strategy can be observed with naked eyes and quantified by colorimetry via measurement of the ratio of absorbances at 680 nm and 520 nm. Fabricated aptasensor for detection of PSA is linear in the concentration range of 0.1-100 ng/ml with 20 pg/ml as the limit of detection (S/N = 3). Because of the selectively recognized for PSA in the presence of other interfering substances, this proposed assay applied to real samples for the rapid screening of PSA.

Abstract
A label-free, rapid response colorimetric aptasensor for sensitive detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) was proposed, which was based on the strategy of ssDNA-modified gold nanoparticle (AuNP) aggregation assisted by lanthanum (La3+) ions. The AuNPs generated a color change that could be monitored in the red, green, and blue and analyzed by the smartphone imaging app. La3+, as a trigger agent, strongly combined with the phosphate groups of the surface of ssDNA-AuNPs probe, which helps create AuNP aggregation and the color change of AuNPs from red to blue. On the contrary, when mixing with CAP, the aptamer (Apt) bound to CAP to form a rigid structure of the Apt-CAP complex, and La3+ attached to the phosphate groups of the complex, which prevented the aptamer from binding to the surface of the AuNPs. As a result, the color of the AuNPs changed to violet-red. Finally, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and the smartphone imaging app were employed to determine CAP with a lower detection limit of 7.65 nM and 5.88 nM, respectively. The proposed strategy featuring high selectivity and strong anti-interference ability for detection of CAP in practical samples was achieved. It is worth mentioning that the simple and portable colorimetric aptasensor will be used for facilitating on-site detection of food samples.

Abstract
We devise a novel colorimetric aptasensor for multiplex antibiotics based on an ss-DNA fragment coordinately controlling gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) aggregation. The multifunctional aptamer (Apt) was elaborately designed to be adsorbed on AuNPs surfaces acting as a binding element for antibiotics and a molecular switch. Chloramphenicol (CAP) and tetracycline (TET) were selected as the model antibiotics. When one kind of antibiotics was added, the specifically recognized fragment of Apt can bind to it and dissociated, and the non-specific one coordinately controls AuNPs aggregation under high-salt conditions. Hence, different color changes of AuNPs solution can be used as the signal readout. The aptasensor exhibited remarkable selectivity and sensitivity for separate detection of TET and CAP, and the detection limits are estimated to be 32.9 and 7.0 nM, respectively. The analysis with the absorption spectroscopy and the smartphone are applied to detect antibiotics in real samples with consistent results and desirable recoveries.

Abstract
A specific and sensitive colorimetric aptasensor is described for the determination of Malachite Green (MG). It is exploiting the inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs act as enzyme mimics that catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2 to yield a dark blue solution. The catalytic activity is inhibited by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium ion, specifically by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which causes the aggregation of AuNPs. If a (negatively charged) RNA-aptamer against MG is added, it binds to the positively charged CTAB and prevents aggregation. This enhances the enzyme mimicking activity of the AuNPs and leads to the formation of a dark blue solution. However, in the presence of MG, the aptamer binds to MG, and leads to the aggregation of AuNPs again. The aggregated AuNPs possess a light blue color. A colorimetric method (best performed at 650 nm) was work out that can detect MG in a concentration range from 10 to 500 nmol L-1. The detection limit based on 3σ/k criterion is 1.8 nmol L-1. The assay is highly specific and accurate. Recoveries from spiked real samples (aquaculture water) ranged from 80% to 120%. Graphical abstract Based on the inhibition of cetyltrimethyal ammonium ion and the enhancement of RNA-aptamer, the differences of the peroxidase-like activities of AuNPs can be greatly enlarged with and without MG, by which a colorimetric aptasensor can be constructed for the detection of Malachite Green (MG).

Abstract
Herein, a novel colorimetric aptasensor was introduced for detection of cocaine based on the formation of three-way junction pockets on the surfaces of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and the catalytic activity of the surfaces of AuNPs. Simplicity and detection of cocaine in a short time (only 35 min) are some of the unique features of the proposed sensing strategy. In the presence of cocaine, triple-fragment aptamer (TFA) forms on the surfaces of AuNPs, leading to a significant decrease of the catalytic activity of AuNPs and the color of samples remains yellow. In the absence of target, TFA does not form on the surfaces of AuNPs and 4-Nitrophenol, as a colorimetric agent, has more access to the surfaces of AuNPs, resulting in the reduction of 4-Nitrophenol and the color of sample changes from yellow to colorless. The sensing strategy showed good specificity, a limit of detection (LOD) of 440 pM and a dynamic range over 2-100 nM. The sensing method was also successfully applied to detect cocaine in spiked human serum samples with recovery of 94.71-98.63%.

Abstract
This work designs a new label-free aptasensor for the colorimetric determination of small molecules (adenosine 5'-triphosphate, ATP) by using visible gold nanoparticles as the signal-generation tags, based on target-triggered hybridization chain reaction (HCR) between two hairpin DNA probes. The assay is carried out referring to the change in the color/absorbance by salt-induced aggregation of gold nanoparticles after the interaction with hairpins, gold nanoparticles and ATP. To construct such an assay system, two hairpin DNA probes with a short single-stranded DNA at the sticky end are utilized for interaction with gold nanoparticles. In the absence of target ATP, the hairpin DNA probes can prevent gold nanoparticles from the salt-induced aggregation through the interaction of the single-stranded DNA at the sticky end with gold nanoparticles. Upon target ATP introduction, the aptamer-based hairpin probe is opened to expose a new sticky end for the strand-displacement reaction with another complementary hairpin, thus resulting in the decreasing single-stranded DNA because of the consumption of hairpins. In this case, gold nanoparticles are uncovered owing to the formation of double-stranded DNA, which causes their aggregation upon addition of the salt, thereby leading to the change in the red-to-blue color. Under the optimal conditions, the HCR-based colorimetric assay presents good visible color or absorbance responses for the determination of target ATP at a concentration as low as 1.0nM. Importantly, the methodology can be further extended to quantitatively or qualitatively monitor other small molecules or biotoxins by changing the sequence of the corresponding aptamer.

Abstract
Analytical methods for detection and quantitation of chloramphenicol in blood serum and foodstuffs arse highly in demand. In this study, a colorimetric sandwich aptamer-based sensor (aptasensor) was fabricated for sensitive and selective detection of chloramphenicol, based on an indirect competitive enzyme-free assay using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), biotin and streptavidin. The designed aptasensor acquires characteristics of AuNPs, including large surface area and unique optical properties, and strong interaction of biotin with streptavidin. In the absence of chloramphenicol, the sandwich structure of aptasensor forms, leading to the observation of sharp red color. In the presence of target, functionalized AuNPs could not bind to 96-well plates, resulting in a faint red color. The fabricated colorimetric aptasensor exhibited high selectivity toward chloramphenicol with a limit of detection as low as 451 pM. Moreover, the developed colorimetric aptasensor was successfully used to detect chloramphenicol in milk and serum with LODs of 697 and 601 pM, respectively.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) doped Fe3O4 (Au@Fe3O4) NPs have been synthesized by a facile one-step solvothermal method. The peroxidase-like activity of Au@Fe3O4 NPs was effectively enhanced due to the synergistic effect between the Fe3O4 NPs and Au NPs. On this basis, an efficient colorimetric aptasensor has been developed using the intrinsic dual functionality of the Au@Fe3O4 NPs as signal indicator and magnetic separator. Initially, the amino-modified aptamer specific for a typical mycotoxin, ochratoxin A (OTA), was surface confined on the amino-terminated glass beads surafce using glutaraldehyde as a linker. Subsequently, the amino-modified capture DNA (cDNA) was labeled with the amino-functionalized Au@Fe3O4 NPs and the aptasensor was thus fabricated through the hybridization reaction between cDNA and the aptamers. While upon OTA addition, aptamers preferred to form the OTA-aptamer complex and the Au@Fe3O4 NPs linked on the cDNA were released into the bulk solution. Through a simple magnetic separation, the collected Au@Fe3O4 NPs can produce a blue colored solution in the presence of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine and H2O2. When the reaction was terminated by addition of H(+) ions, the blue product could be changed into a yellow one with higher absorption intensity. This colorimetric aptasensor can detect as low as 30 pgmL(-1) OTA with high specificity. To the best of our knowledge, the present colorimetric aptasensor is the first attempt to use the peroxidase-like activity of nanomaterial for OTA detection, which may provide an acttractive path toward routine quality control of food safety.

Abstract
The increasing demand for easily available and low-cost diagnostics has fuelled the development of aptasensors as platforms for rapid, sensitive, and point-of-care testing of target analytes. Recently, gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-based aptasensors have attracted wide recognition owing to their color transition properties which allow real-time rapid sensing of targets. In this study, we utilized the color transition property of aptamer-functionalized AuNPs to detect and quantify estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), a key biomarker protein in breast cancer. We found that the coating of AuNPs with unmodified ERα-RNA aptamer (GGGGUCAAGGUGACCCC) makes them resistant to salt-induced aggregation. However, addition of ERα to the aptamer-protected AuNPs results in their spontaneous aggregation as evident from a color transition from wine red to deep blue. On the basis of this, we developed an ERα aptasensor, with limits of detection and quantification of 0.64 and 2.16 ng/mL, respectively; the aptasensor can efficiently detect and quantify ERα in a working range of 10 ng/mL-5μg/mL protein. Validation of the aptasensor on cellular extracts of ERα-positive MCF-7 and ERα-deficient MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells showed a target-selective response in ERα-positive samples but not in cellular extracts of ERα-deficient breast cancer cells. Further, the small size and simple fabrication chemistry of aptamers provide an additional benefit to make the ERα aptasensor a potentially useful and cost-effective tool in point-of-care analyses of ERα.

Abstract
Recently we demonstrated oriented formation of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) dimers for ultrasensitive sensing oligonucleotides (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 12338). Herein, we investigate the reverse process of this sensing mechanism using target analytes to disassemble the orient-aggregated AuNP dimers. This enables us to expand the analytes from oligonucleotides to other molecules, e.g. highly sensitive and selective determination of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is selected for a demonstration in this work. Aptamers specific to the target molecules are used as linkers to prepare the AuNP dimers. In the presence of the target molecule, the aptamer changes its structure to bind the target molecule. Thus the pre-formed AuNP dimers are disassembled. As a result, the solution color is changed from blue to red. This sensing design retains the advantages of the previously developed sensors based on target molecules guided formation of AuNP dimers, e.g. the overwhelming sensitivity and stability comparing with those non-oriented sensors based on the formation of large aggregates, with the additional advantages as follows: 1) the target molecules are expanded from oligonucleotides to arbitrary molecules that can specifically bind to aptamers; 2) the color change is completed within 5 min, while the previous sensor based on the formation of AuNP dimers cost ~1 hour to obtain stable responses.

Abstract
A highly sensitive, low-cost colorimetric aptasensor was developed for the determination of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in human urine. The method is based on a conformational switching of the 8-OHdG aptamer to form a G-quadruplex structure in the presence of 8-OHdG. The resulting G-quadruplex assembles into a peroxidase-like DNAzyme with hemin, which effectively catalyzes the oxidation of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS(2-)) by H2O2 to ABTS(+), resulting in an increase in the absorption signal at 416nm along with a color change of the solution. The response signals linearly correlated with the concentration of 8-OHdG, ranging from 466pM to 247nM with a detection limit of 141pM. The relative standard deviation and the recovery were 1.97-3.47% (n=11) and 98.8-100.2%, respectively. The proposed method avoids the label and derivatization steps in common methods and allows direct analysis of the samples by the naked eye without costly instruments, which is reliable, inexpensive, and sensitive.
