Abstract
This research project presents the development and preliminary validation of a German version of the Adverse Competition-related Cognitions Questionnaire (ACCQ) and comprises four studies. In Study 1, 101 athletes and 124 coaches from different team and individual sports generated a large pool of cognitions, which was reduced to an initial item pool of 54 cognitions through a multi-step procedure with different experts. In Study 2, the underlying factor structure of the questionnaire was examined by an exploratory factor analysis (N2 = 348), which revealed six factors (athletic comparison, coach devaluation, devaluation of one's own performance, appreciation by coach and family, inner resistance against competitions, and general exhaustion) with 26 items retained. Subsequently, in Study 3, the results were re-examined with a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA, N3 = 419; CFI = 0.91, RMSEA = 0.06, SRMR = 0.06). In addition, preliminary support for the construct validity (i.e., convergent, divergent, and concurrent validity) of the ACCQ was obtained by examining associations among the ACCQ subscales and theoretical correlates such as social comparison, cognitive interference, irrational performance beliefs, and fear of negative evaluation. In Study 4, a second CFA (N4 = 153; CFI = 0.89, RMSEA = 0.06, SRMR = 0.07) was conducted to test the identified 6-factor solution in a sample of high-performance competitive athletes. With its broad range of factors, the ACCQ provides a useful and valid measure for assessing different adverse competition-related cognitions, offering a wide range of potential applications in research and sport psychology practice.

Abstract
The development of sports in children is crucial. Unlike European and American sports clubs, China uses children's sports schools as its main form of competitive sports training. However, with the changing economy and mindset in China, this approach is facing challenges and is in urgent need of changes allowing the school and its internal staff to be more sustainable as they can adapt and survive in the overall market. This change means that such schools can no longer simply rely on government assistance but rather must be more in tune with the market economy and gain competitiveness. Zhangjiakou, China, one of the host cities for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, has a good overall sports atmosphere. Its municipal government attaches importance to sports development, including children's sports, with several children's sports schools that are typical of this study. Accordingly, seven Zhangjiakou sports schools were selected for investigation through field research and sampling. Moreover, the sources of resistance to change in Zhangjiakou children's sports schools were analyzed from multiple perspectives, including external politics and economy, internal group and individual perspectives, using data from questionnaires and in-depth interviews.

Abstract
Athletes need to consume a significant amount of energy during prolonged training and in high-intensity competition. It is necessary for them to take nutritional foods that recharge their bodies. However, in sporting events of recent years, both domestic and international, many positive drug tests are found to be caused by the ingestion of foods that contain performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). As a result, the prevention and control of PEDs in food supply have drawn increasing attention. For better prevention and control, the first step is to understand the food contaminants -- PEDs. This study has categorized PEDs through their presence in animal-derived foods, plant-derived foods, and synthetic nutritional supplements in competitive sports. It investigates the potential risks of foodborne doping using techniques such as external addition and endogenous component analysis. This research explored the causes of PEDs in food and their negative effects on athletes and proposed measures to ensure the safety of nutritional substances in competitive sports. PEDs in animal-derived foods include β-adrenergic agonists, anabolic steroids, and glucocorticoids, which can be found in meat and ox penis, amongst other food sources. In contrast, PEDs in plant-derived foods include alkaloids, higenamine, and zeranol, which can be found in coffee, tea, Sichuan pepper, custard apple, and cereal. Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) that are often added to synthetic supplements include creatine, traditional Chinese herbs, 1, 3-dimethylbutylamine (DMAA), sibutramine, ephedrine, and methylhexanamine. Targeted anti-doping training should be provided to athletes. In addition, the latest domestic and international standards and regulations regarding PEDs or prohibited and restricted ingredients in foods should be tracked in real-time. The control list for performance-enhancing drugs in food should be continually updated and refined. Research on detection methods for performance-enhancing drugs in food should also be advanced. Moreover, market surveillance and law enforcement should be strengthened to ensure that sports foods meet national safety standards before they enter the market. This paper provides workable solutions to clarify the types and scope of performance-enhancing drugs in food, aiming to improve the prevention and control of PEDs in animal-derived foods, plant-derived foods, and supplements in major sporting events.

Abstract
Although digital media are increasingly important for adolescent athletes, few studies explore their influence on mental health in this population. This study aimed to examine this relationship in 591 German adolescent athletes (aged 12-19 years) from 42 different sports. Longer daily social media usage was connected to increased negative affect and dysfunctional eating patterns. Similar results were found for cognitive-behavioral symptoms of excessive media usage and mental health. Structural equation modeling revealed these relationships were mediated by social comparison and quality of sleep. Higher athletic performance level was related to increased social comparison, but not to quality of sleep, negative affect, and dysfunctional eating. The negative relationship between excessive media usage and sleep was stronger in competitive and elite than in recreational athletes. Results imply digital media should receive attention when aiming to improve mental health in athletes. Relevant targets for future intervention could be social comparison and sleep.

Abstract
At first sight, ophthalmic drugs are not necessarily suspected of being used as performance-enhancing agents in competitive sports. However, there are some restrictions that must be noted, especially when certain drugs are taken orally. A structured analysis of the doping relevance of ophthalmic drugs was performed on the basis of a literature review, taking into account the current guidelines of the National Anti-Doping Agency of Germany and the World Anti-Doping Agency. Use of the most common ophthalmological drug groups is possible without restrictions, especially in the case of topical application. An exception is the oral use of diuretics, which is prohibited at all times. For glucocorticoids, topical application to the eye is allowed, but oral application is prohibited in competition. A similar restriction applies to the use of epinephrin, for which all forms of systemic application are prohibited in competition. When taking beta-blockers, the sport being played is the determining factor: use is prohibited in billiards, archery, darts, golf, motor sports, shooting sports, skiing/snowboarding, ski jumping, freestyle aerials/half pipe, snowboard half pipe/big air, and underwater sports. For shooting and archery, beta-blockers are also prohibited outside of competitions. Athletes with pre-existing ophthalmological conditions should seek comprehensive advice from an ophthalmologist before using any medication, and together they should choose a permissible active ingredient, consider the appropriate route of application, and, if necessary, apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption. It is currently not known how many of the national and international athletes have to be treated with eye drops.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regardless of competitive athletes' body image pressures, only few studies have focused on adolescent sport participants' body image and the findings are inconclusive. Furthermore, the role of competitive goals in sports on adolescents' body size perception has not been studied. We examined the factors associated with adolescents' competitive goals in sports and body size perception, and the associations between adolescents' competitive goals in sports and body size perception. METHODS The cross-sectional study consisted of 475 goal-oriented sports club participants and 936 reference youths (aged 14-16 years). The study questionnaire included multiple choice items on health behaviours, motives to exercise, competitive goals in sports and body size perception. The multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the associations. RESULTS Adolescents with competitive goals in sports perceived their body size as about the right size more frequently than reference youths (68% vs 47%, p < 0.001 in girls; 74% vs 61%, p < 0.001 in boys). More than one-fourth of girls with competitive goals in sports perceived themselves as overweight, although only 7% of them were overweight. Adolescents with appearance/weight motives to exercise and poor perceived physical fitness had higher odds of perceived fatness. Additionally, BMI was positively associated with perceived fatness and negatively with perceived thinness. Having competitive goals in sports was not independently associated with perceived fatness or perceived thinness. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents' BMI, appearance/weight motives to exercise, and perceived physical fitness were more strongly associated with body size perception than their competitive goals in sports. However, perceived fatness among girls with competitive goals in sports should be considered in organized sports.

Abstract
Innerhalb der Kardiologie hat der Bereich der Sportkardiologie in den letzten 10 Jahren sukzessive an Bedeutung zugenommen. Dies liegt v. a. daran, dass sich das Spektrum der Fragestellungen zu körperlichem Training in der Prävention und Sekundärprävention jenseits der klassischen kardiovaskulären Rehabilitation erweitert hat. Dieses Spektrum betrifft v. a. Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene, die bei manifester kardialer Erkrankung weiterhin körperlich aktiv sein wollen und zum Teil Freizeit- und Leistungssport anstreben. Ergänzend wird der Kreis der Patient*innen mit kardialen Erkrankungen, die auch noch im höheren Alter sportliche Höchstleistungen anstreben und Beratung suchen, immer größer. In diesen Fällen geht es dann darum, auf der einen Seite ein körperliches Training als Therapiestrategie zu empfehlen, aber auf der anderen Seite auch das kardiovaskuläre System zu schützen. Empfehlungen zu körperlichem Training sollten deshalb auch individuelle Aspekte berücksichtigen. Zusätzlich wird im ambitionierten Freizeit- und Leistungssport die Empfehlung zur Freigabe von Wettkampfsport adressiert. So fragen Patient*innen nach Sport- und Trainingsempfehlungen bei kardiovaskulären Risikofaktoren wie arterieller Hypertonie, Pathologien der Koronararterien im Sinne des Fehlabgangs der Koronarien, Muskelbrücke oder koronarer Herzkrankheit, Kardiomyopathien, Myokarditis sowie Herzrhythmusstörungen und Herzklappenfehlern. In diesem Artikel werden diese Erkrankungen mit entsprechenden sportkardiologischen Spezifika diskutiert und jeweils Empfehlungen zu körperlichem Training und Wettkampfsport gegeben.

Abstract
Objectives The present study was conducted to investigate the correlation between (competitive) sports and the occurrence of temporomandibular dysfunctions (TMD) by comparing the prevalences in competitive, recreational, and non-athletic women. Materials and methods A total of 138 women between the ages of 18 and 45 were interviewed about symptoms of TMD by means of a questionnaire. Based on their athletic performance level, the participating women were classified as competitive athletes, recreational athletes, or non-athletes (each group n = 46). Results Symptoms of TMD were notably less frequent in competitive female athletes (52.2%) than in recreational female athletes (63.0%) and female non-athletes (60.9%). With increasing training load, the prevalence of TMD decreased in both the competitive and recreational female athlete groups. Conclusions Athletic activity in general seems to have a positive effect on the occurrence of TMD. Competitive female athletes appear less likely to suffer from symptoms of TMD than recreational athletes and non-athletes. One possible explanation for this could be the better supervision by qualified trainers and physiotherapists in competitive sports. Clinical relevance Patients should be motivated to engage in sports as a protective measure against symptoms of TMD. However, it is important to ensure that they are properly instructed by experienced personnel in order to avoid unphysiological strain and negative consequences.

Abstract
Energy is essential to human daily functioning and performance. However, the association of mental energy with athletes' performance has rarely been examined. We attempted to examine the pre-competition mental energy-performance relationships by two studies. Study 1 administered Athletic Mental Energy Scale (AMES, Lu et al., 2018) to nine elite physically-disabled table tennis players one day before competition in 5 international tournaments. Then, we collected their subjective performance after each competition. In Study 2, we sampled 77 National-level physically-disabled table tennis players and examined the pre-competition mental energy-performance relationship as the procedure in Study 1. Results from Study 1 provided initial findings of how pre-competition mental energy is associated with performance and portrayed in elite physically-disabled table tennis players. Results from Study 2 further confirmed the pre-competition mental energy- performance relationships. We suggested future studies to examine the mental energy-performance relationships in physically-disabled and abled athletes and different sports.

Abstract
Cardiac fibromas are the second most common benign primary tumour of the heart in the children; the clinical features include chest pain, arrhythmia, low cardiac output due to outflow tract obstruction, and sudden cardiac death. Sports are associated with an increased risk for sudden death in athletes who are affected by cardiovascular conditions predisposing to life-threatening arrhythmias. We present a case report of 10-year-old asymptomatic boy who was referred to the paediatric cardiology department by his general practitioner for cardiac examination before participation in competitive sports. The electrocardiogram showed premature ventricular contractions originated from inferior of left ventricle. A mass was detected by 2D transthoracic echocardiography, and it was found to be compatible with fibroma on MRI. In some cases, cardiac tumours are asymptomatic as in our patient. Electrocardiogram abnormalities require detailed cardiac imaging with echocardiogram, and if necessary CT/MRI. In this article, we emphasise that detailed cardiac examination of individuals before participating in competitive sports is vital.

Abstract
Improved clinical care has led to an increase in the number of adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) engaging in leisure time and competitive sports activities. Although the benefits of exercise in patients with CHD are well established, there is a low but appreciable risk of exercise-related complications. Published exercise recommendations for individuals with CHD are predominantly centred on anatomic lesions, hampering an individualized approach to exercise advice in this heterogeneous population. This document presents an update of the recommendations for competitive sports participation in athletes with cardiovascular disease published by the Sports Cardiology & Exercise section of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC) in 2005. It introduces an approach which is based on the assessment of haemodynamic, electrophysiological and functional parameters, rather than anatomic lesions. The recommendations provide a comprehensive assessment algorithm which allows for patient-specific assessment and risk stratification of athletes with CHD who wish to participate in competitive sports.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The German Society of Craniomandibular Function and Disorders recommends that patients suffering from temporomandibular dysfunctions should practice sports in order to compensate for everyday stress. This raises the question as to what extent competitive athletes develop temporomandibular dysfunctions or whether their athletic activities protect them. With the present literature review, the authors intend to give an overview of the currently available publications on this topic. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature research in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases was performed to filter out the currently available publications on the topic 'sports, and temporomandibular dysfunction. RESULTS Out of 114 available articles, seven met the inclusion criteria. Two other relevant articles were found in the list of references, so that in total, nine publications were picked for the review. In case numbers ranging from eight to 347 subjects, a temporomandibular dysfunction was detected with a prevalence between 11.7% and 100% for athletes and between 11.11% and 14.3% for non-athletes. Different kinds of sports were evaluated, all of them contact sports: basketball, handball, wrestling, boxing, karate, mixed martial arts, field hockey, water polo, and soccer. One study compared athletes with and without consumption of anabolic steroids, regardless of the type of sport. The level of athletic performance varied across the different studies. CONCLUSIONS Currently, studies dealing with the effect of competitive sports on temporomandibular dysfunction are scarce. Inconsistent methodological procedures permit only limited comparability. CLINICAL RELEVANCE A general trend, however, can already be discerned: professional athletes suffer from temporomandibular dysfunctions more frequently than non-athletes.

Abstract
The guidelines for sports cardiology have recently been published for the first time by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). They address recommendations for leisure time exercise and competitive sports in athletes with cardiovascular diseases. The spectrum ranges from women during pregnancy, athletes with increased cardiovascular risk and risk factors or with a genetic predisposition, such as ion channelopathies, cardiomyopathies, congenital heart diseases as well as patients with valvular heart diseases, coronary heart disease, after myocardial infarction, with arrhythmia and with heart failure. A detailed cardiological evaluation of the athlete with heart disease is the basis for detailed and individually tailored recommendations with respect to the type of sport, mode, duration and intensity of physical exercise, physical training and the capability for competitive sports. Evidence from the current literature and the experience of the sports cardiologist are the basis for shared decision making between the sports cardiologist and the athlete/patient, which is becoming increasingly more important. Together, they will decide which sport can be practiced defining intensity and duration.

Abstract
Compliance of elite athletes with vaccination recommendations is low mainly based on concerns about side-effects and perceived poor vaccine efficacy due to continued physical training. We therefore employed seasonal influenza vaccination to investigate the effect of regular physical training on vaccine-induced cellular and humoral immunity in elite athletes and controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations and vaccine-specific T-cells were quantified and functionally characterized from 45 athletes and 25 controls before, and 1, 2 and 26 weeks after vaccination. Moreover, influenza-specific antibodies and their neutralizing function were quantified. Both groups showed a significant increase in vaccine-reactive CD4 T-cell levels which peaked one week after vaccination (p < 0.0001). The increase was significantly more pronounced in athletes (4.1-fold) compared to controls (2.3-fold; p = 0.0007). The cytokine profile changed from multifunctional T-cells co-producing IFNγ, IL-2 and TNFα to cells with restricted cytokine expression. This change in functionality was associated with a significant increase in CTLA-4 expression (p < 0.0001), which again was more pronounced in athletes. Likewise, the increase in neutralizing antibodies was stronger in athletes (p = 0.004 for H1N1; p = 0.032 for H3N2). In conclusion, both groups mounted a strong vaccine-specific cellular and humoral immunity after standard vaccination. The more pronounced increase in specific T-cells and neutralizing antibodies indicates that high frequency and intensity of training enhance vaccine-responses in elite athletes.

Abstract
CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE In this article, suitable imaging of stress reactions and stress fractures in athletes will be examined. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS Diagnostic procedures include X‑ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and bone scintigraphy. METHODICAL INNOVATIONS MRI represents the gold standard for these types of injuries. PERFORMANCE Of all imaging techniques, MRI shows the highest sensitivity in terms of diagnostic and prognostic aspects in stress reactions and stress fractures. PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS Early performance of MRI to evaluate the staging, therapy and prognosis of the healing process is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Up to now, the investigation of joint pain in adolescents, especially in adolescent elite athletes, has been neglected. This is critical because the musculoskeletal system is still in growth and consecutive trauma and irreversible damage can result. OBJECTIVES To shed light into the research area of joint pain in elite adolescent athletes, we studied the willingness to compete while having joint pain as part as the phenomenon of "playing hurt". Our aim was to describe which athletes are more willing to compete in spite of joint pain and which individual and sport-specific characteristics are associated with it. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used data of the nationwide GOAL study which included 1138 adolescent athletes from 51 Olympic sports (56.1% male, 14-18 years of age). RESULTS Altogether, 43.8% of the German elite adolescent athletes were willing to participate in competition in spite of joint pain. The willingness was higher among female athletes, athletes with a higher number of competitions, athletes living in a boarding school, and athletes in weight-dependent sports. CONCLUSIONS The fact that more than four out of ten adolescent elite athletes are willing to compete despite joint pain is alarming because joint pain can have severe long-term health consequences. It is important that trainers, managers and physicians offer assistance in the treatment of joint pain and support them as much as possible in therapy and pain management. The overarching aim should be to prevent irreversible damage as well as a premature end of the sports career.

Abstract
Although many studies adopted Smith's (1986) cognitive-affective model of athletic burnout in examining stress-burnout relationship, very few studies examined the mediating/moderating role of perceived stress on the stress-burnout relationship. We sampled 195 college student-athletes and assessed their life stress, perceived stress, and burnout. Correlation analyses found all study variables correlated. Two separate hierarchical regression analyses found that the "distress" component of perceived stress mediated athletes' two types of life stress-burnout relationship but "counter-stress" component of perceived stress-moderated athletes' general-life stress-burnout relationship. We concluded that interweaving relationships among athletes' life stress, perceived stress, and burnout are not straightforward. Future research should consider the nature of athletes life stress, and dual role of perceived stress in examining its' association with related psychological responses in athletic settings.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and its absence rate among female university student athletes in different types of sports. METHODS A cross-sectional study based on a standard self-reporting questionnaire was performed among 1335 athletes. Participants were female athletes who attended the National Sports Olympiad of Female University Students in basketball, volleyball, futsal, tennis, badminton, swimming, track and field, shooting, and karate. RESULTS One thousand and fifty-nine athletes with the mean (SD) age of 23.1 (3.8) years responded to the questionnaire (response rate 79%). The 12-month prevalence of LBP was 39.0%; in addition, lifetime and point prevalence of LBP were 59.7 and 17.8%, respectively. Basketball (47.9 %) and karate (44.0 %) players had reported the highest 12-month prevalence of LBP. Also, LBP prevalences in shooting (29.7 %) and badminton (42.4 %) players were not negligible. Results show that, LBP led to relatively high absence rate from training sessions (27.9%) and matches (13.0%). CONCLUSION While most of the existing literatures regarding female athletes' LBP have focused on particular sports with specific low back demands (such as skiing and rowing), many other sports have not been studied very well in this regard. Investigating LBP prevalence and related factors in other types of sports, such as combat sports, badminton and shooting, can help us better understand the prevalence of low back pain and provide us with necessary insight to take effective steps towards its prevention in athletes.
