Abstract
Background The ankle is one of the anatomic sites most frequently injured in National Football League (NFL) players. Ankle injuries have previously been shown to have long-lasting negative impacts, and have been associated with impaired athletic performance. The aim of this study was to use fantasy football points as a metric to evaluate the impact of ankle injuries on NFL offensive skill player performance. Methods An open-access online database was used to identify NFL players who sustained ankle injuries from 2009 to 2020. Another public online database was used to determine fantasy points and other performance metrics for injured offensive skill players in the seasons before and after their ankle injury. Injured players were matched to a healthy control by position, age, and BMI. Paired T-tests were performed to evaluate performance metrics before and after the ankle injury. An ANCOVA was performed to assess the effect of return to play (RTP) time and injury type on fantasy performance. Results 303 players with ankle injuries were included. Fantasy output, including average points per game (PPG) and total fantasy points accrued in one season, significantly decreased in the season following a player's ankle injury (p < 0.0001). In running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers, performance significantly decreased in every metric evaluated (p < 0.0001). In quarterbacks, there was no significant change in performance, except for a decrease in the number of games played (p = 0.0033) and in the number of interceptions thrown (p = 0.029). Conclusion Assessing fantasy football output revealed a decrease in player performance in the season following an ankle injury, especially in route-running players. These results can be used to inform injury prevention and rehabilitation practices in the NFL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous literature has primarily viewed physical effort as an aversive experience. However, recent research suggests that effort can also be valued positively. These differences in approach and avoidance tendencies toward physical effort may play a key role in the self-regulation of physical activity behaviors. The aim of this study was to develop a scale that measures these tendencies and contributes to a better understanding of physical effort and how it affects behavior. METHODS The Physical Effort Scale (PES) was developed in Study 1 based on expert evaluations (n = 9) and cognitive interviews (n = 10). In Study 2 (n = 680, 69% female), content validity and dimensional structure were examined using principal component analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Item reduction was conducted using item response theory. Preliminary construct validity was explored using regression. Study 3 (n = 297, 71% female) was used to validate dimensional structure, internal consistency, and construct validity, and to assess test-retest reliability. RESULTS In Study 1, 44 items were rated for content validity, of which 18 were selected and refined based on cognitive interviews. Analyses from Study 2 allowed reducing the scale to 8 items with a two-dimension structure: tendency to approach (n = 4) and to avoid physical effort (n = 4). The two subscales showed high internal consistency (α = 0.897 for the approach dimension and 0.913 for the avoidance dimension) and explained usual levels of physical activity, providing preliminary evidence of construct validity. Study 3 confirmed the two-dimension structure with high internal consistency (α = 0.907 and 0.916 for the approach and avoidance dimension, respectively) and revealed acceptable test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation >0.66). Patterns of associations with other constructs showed expected relationships, confirming the concurrent, convergent, and discriminant validity of the scale. CONCLUSIONS The PES is a valid and reliable measure of individual differences in the valuation of physical effort. This scale can assess the propensity to engage in physically demanding tasks in non-clinical populations. The PES and its manual are available in the Supplementary Material.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the mechanisms and visual outcomes of recreational and sports-related open globe injuries (OGIs). METHODS A retrospective case series of eyes experiencing OGI secondary to recreational and sports-related activities at Memorial Hermann Hospital - Texas Medical Center (MHH-TMC) from January 1st, 2010 through March 31st, 2015 was conducted. Exclusionary criteria included no documented ophthalmologic examination upon presentation and repairs performed by services other than ophthalmology. A two-tailed t-test and Fisher's exact test were utilized to assess for statistical significance (p < 0.05). RESULTS A total of 20 eyes from 20 patients experiencing OGIs secondary to recreational and sports-related activities were included. Thirteen eyes (65 %) presented with OGIs from penetrating objects while seven eyes (35 %) had injuries from blunt injuries. Males comprised most of the total study group (17 of 20 patients), and zone 3 injuries were the most common location of OGI. While eyes with OGIs from blunt trauma underwent evisceration/enucleation procedures more frequently than OGIs from penetrating mechanisms (71% vs 23 %) (p = 0.10), the final visual outcomes were similarly poor between groups. Only three eyes in this series experienced an improvement from baseline VA; all three eyes had lacked initial findings consistent with severe injury. CONCLUSIONS Recreational and sports related OGIs most commonly occur in zone 3 and in young males, regardless of injury type. OGIs due to both penetrating and blunt trauma mechanisms implicate poor functional outcomes, but the absence of certain presenting injury features may indicate possibility of eventual visual recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Personalized interventions aiming to increase physical activity in individuals are effective. However, from a public health perspective, it would be important to stimulate physical activity in larger groups of people who share the vulnerability to be physically inactive throughout adulthood. To find these high-risk groups, we identified 36-year leisure-time physical activity profiles from young adulthood to late midlife in females and males. Moreover, we uncovered which anthropometric-, demographic-, lifestyle-, and health-related characteristics were associated with these physical activity profiles. METHODS We included 2,778 females and 1,938 males from the population-based older Finnish Twin Cohort Study, who responded to health and behavior surveys at the mean ages of 24, 30, 40 and 60. Latent profile analysis was used to identify longitudinal leisure-time physical activity profiles. RESULTS We found five longitudinal leisure-time physical activity profiles for both females and males. Females' profiles were: 1) Low increasing moderate (29%), 2) Moderate stable (23%), 3) Very low increasing low (20%), 4) Low stable (20%) and 5) High increasing high (9%). Males' profiles were: 1) Low increasing moderate (29%), 2) Low stable very low (26%), 3) Moderate decreasing low (21%), 4) High fluctuating high (17%) and 5) Very low stable (8%). In both females and males, lower leisure-time physical activity profiles were associated with lower education, higher body mass index, smoking, poorer perceived health, higher sedentary time, high blood pressure, and a higher risk for type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, lower leisure-time physical activity was linked to a higher risk of depression in females. CONCLUSIONS We found several longitudinal leisure-time physical activity profiles with unique changes in both sexes. Fewer profiles in females than in males remained or became low physically active during the 36-year follow-up. We observed that lower education, higher body mass index, and more smoking already in young adulthood were associated with low leisure-time physical activity profiles. However, the fact that several longitudinal profiles demonstrated a change in their physical activity behavior over time implies the potential for public health interventions to improve leisure-time physical activity levels.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the children's usage and their physical activity levels at playgrounds with (N = 4) and without (N = 4) organized sports activities, following a quasi-experimental study design. Direct observations were used to assess the playground usage and estimate the playground users' age category, sex, and physical activity intensity level. The results indicated that playgrounds with sports activities were associated with 52% more users at the time of the activities. However, this increase was only seen in boys. Furthermore, playgrounds with sport activities were not associated with different physical activity levels in children as compared to children on regular playgrounds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate how athlete ethnicity is discussed in the inclusion and exclusion criteria, methodology, findings, and conclusions of research focused on menstrual health in sports science and medicine. DESIGN A scoping review of sports-based research conducted on athletes related to (1) menstrual health and ethnicity, (2) how researchers include/exclude participants based on ethnicity and (3) how ethnicity is discussed. DATA SOURCES Electronic search of PubMed and ProQuest. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Articles were included if they met the following criteria: (1) published before September 2023, (2) published in peer-reviewed journals, (3) participants were women athletes, (4) published in English and (5) relating to menstrual health. Articles were assessed as good, fair or poor quality using the Inclusion of Participant Ethnicity Quality Assessment Criteria. RESULTS From the 1089 studies available from the initial database search, 55 studies considered ethnicity. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria and were assessed as either good (22%), fair (44%) or poor (33%) in quality in their consideration of athlete ethnicity. 81% of research articles on menstrual health in sports do not consider athlete ethnicity, and when ethnicity is discussed, it rarely meets the criteria for cultural safety in the research process. Most studies did not factor ethnicity into the analysis and lacked cultural considerations in the research design and interventions. CONCLUSION More careful inclusion of ethnicity in sports menstrual health-related research and recognition of social and cultural influences on health and research outcomes for indigenous and other ethnic minority groups is needed. Such research is required to support coaches, medical personnel and support staff in designing culturally safe environments for sportswomen from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Abstract
Background There is limited data regarding how clinicians operationalize shared decision-making (SDM) with athletes with cardiovascular diagnoses. This study was designed to explore sports cardiologists' conceptions of SDM and approaches to sports eligibility decisions. Methods 20 sports cardiologists were interviewed by telephone or video conference from October 2022 to May 2023. Qualitative descriptive analysis was conducted with the transcripts. Results All participants endorsed SDM for eligibility decisions, however, SDM was defined and operationalized heterogeneously. Only 6 participants specifically referenced eliciting patient preferences during SDM. Participants described variable roles for the physician in SDM and variable views on athletes' understanding, perception, and tolerance of risk. Participants thresholds for prohibitive annual risk of sudden cardiac death ranged from <1 % to >10 %. Conclusions These findings reinforce the general acceptance of SDM for sports eligibility decisions and highlight the need to better understand this process and identify the most effective approach for operationalization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A scoping review was conducted to synthesize the literature examining impact of the Children's Fitness Tax Credit (CFTC) on the physical activity (PA) of Canadian children. Specifically, we posed two research questions seeking evidence for: (1) equitable take-up (e.g., claiming, use) of the CFTC by Canadian families; and (2) effectiveness of the CFTC in promoting or facilitating PA or sport participation among Canadian children and adolescents. METHODS A search was conducted in May 2023 of five databases (e.g., Medline, Scopus) and hand searching using terms such as children, adolescents, physical activity, sport, tax credit or taxation. Documents were included if they were data-based studies, available in English or French, and related to the research questions. They were then coded for characteristics of the document, sample, data, behaviour, and findings. SYNTHESIS Of 318 possible documents, 7 documents revealing 26 findings were included after a full-article scan. Most of the documents were published and had a national scope. The most frequent source of data was from parental reports (62%), with the most common types of behaviour being tax claim take-up rates (31%) or PA (27%). For the two research questions, the available evidence suggests no support for equitable take-up of the CFTC or the amount claimed, and most of the findings indicated no (64%) or limited effectiveness of the tax credit (29%). CONCLUSION The CFTC had limited to no impact in promoting PA among Canadian children, particularly for those experiencing low income.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of perinatal depression is increasing and has become a global public health problem to be addressed. OBJECTIVE To explore the prevention and treatment effects of different exercise methods on perinatal depression. METHODS A meta-analysis was conducted by searching databases for published "exercise interventions for perinatal depression "related randomized controlled trials, up to July 20, 2022. RESULTS 48 randomized controlled trials were included, with a total of 5282 pregnant women. (1) Exercise prevention of prenatal depression has a low effective stress intervention effect, ranking from high to low as yoga, aerobic+resistance. (2) Exercise therapy for prenatal depression has a significant intervention effect, followed by gymnastics, pelvic floor muscle training, aerobic exercise, aerobic+resistance, and yoga. (3) Exercise prevention of postpartum depression has a low effective intervention effect, followed by yoga, aerobic exercise, aerobic+resistance, and gymnastics. (4) Exercise has a moderate equivalent stress intervention effect on treating postpartum depression, followed by aerobic exercise, water exercise, yoga, fertility dance, and stroller walking. LIMITATIONS Due to the small number of included literature on single exercise modalities, and maternity is a special population, most of the trial procedures included in the text were not blinded, which has a certain risk of bias and affects the accuracy of the Meta-analysis results. CONCLUSIONS The therapeutic effect of exercise in the prevention and treatment of perinatal depression is superior to the preventive effect, and the effect of prenatal prevention and treatment is better than that of postpartum, with a moderate effect.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare PROMs in patients undergoing anterior glenoid labral repair using all-suture versus conventional anchors. We hypothesized PROMs would be similar between groups. METHODS We performed a retrospective review of the Arthrex Global Surgical Outcomes System (SOS) database, querying patients who underwent arthroscopic glenoid labral repair between 01/01/2015 and 12/31/2020. Patients aged 18-100, who had isolated glenoid labrum repair with at least 12-month follow-up were included. The visual analog pain scale (VAS), Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index, Veteran's RAND 12-items health survey, single assessment numeric evaluation and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score (ASES) were compared preoperatively, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years postoperatively in patients who received all-suture anchors versus conventional anchors in the setting of anterior glenoid labrum repair. Our primary aim was comparison of PROMs between patients receiving all-suture versus conventional suture anchors. Secondarily, a sub-analysis was performed comparing outcomes based on anchor utilization for patients with noted anterior instability. RESULTS We evaluated 566 patients, 54 patients receiving all-suture anchors and 512 patients receiving conventional anchors. At two-year follow-up there was no significant difference between the two groups in PROMs. In a sub-analysis of isolated anterior labrum repair, there was an improvement in ASES (P = 0.034) and VAS (P = 0.039) with the all-suture anchor at two-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS All-suture anchors provide similar or superior pain and functional outcome scores up to 2 years postoperatively compared to conventional anchors. CLINICAL RELEVANCE As all-suture anchors gain popularity among surgeons, this is the largest scale study to date validating their use in the setting of glenoid labrum repair. Abstract
BACKGROUND It is known that balance is affected in hearing-impaired athletes and its effects on performance. However, studies on the reliability and validity of scales evaluating balance are insufficient. AIM To analyze and demonstrate the effectiveness of various clinical tests using assessment balance for hearing-impaired athletes. METHOD The study included 60 elite athletes (aged between 18 and 25) with (n = 30) and without (n = 30) hearing impairment. The static balance was evaluated with the Flamingo Test (FT) and the dynamic balance with the Functional Reach Test (FRT), Four-Step Square Test (FSST), Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), and Y Balance Test (YBT). All balance tests were repeated at 1-week intervals. Test-retest reliability, known-group validity, and predictive validity of the scales were investigated. RESULT All balancing tests demonstrated strong test-retest reliability. FT and FSST had known-group and predictive validity. While FRT and the components of both YBT and SEBT involving anterior reaching were not valid tests for hearing-impaired individuals, YBT and SEBT had validity considering the composite score and other components. CONCLUSION It was revealed that the balance of hearing-impaired athletes was comparable to the balance of healthy athletes in test conditions in which visual information could be used effectively. For this reason, it is important to consider the visual information factor when evaluating the balance of hearing-impaired athletes. Additionally, taking into account time and tiredness, FT for static balance and FSST for dynamic balance may be helpful to evaluate hearing-impaired athletes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Heel Rise endurance (HRE) which indicates the extrinsic foot core (ECO) muscle's performance and the paper grip endurance (PGE) which indicates the intrinsic foot core (ICO) muscle's performance are essential components of a healthy foot function. However, the foot core muscles' fatigue response on spatial and temporal gait parameters after the HRE and the PGE tests were not adequately investigated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the fatigue of the ICO and the ECO muscles affect gait parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 22 sedentary individuals (44 feet). Gait was investigated pre and after the Heel Rise (HR) endurance test and the paper grip (PG) endurance test by inertial sensors. At least 500 consecutive steps were collected for each individual. Spatial-temporal gait parameters were used as outcome measures. RESULTS ECO fatigue and ICO fatigue led to increases in the step length (p < 0.05) and the stride lengths (p < 0.05), the single support (p < 0.05), and the terminal stance durations (p < 0.05). It was also seen that ICO fatigue had a greater effect on gait than ECO fatigue. The ECO fatigue had a medium to large effect on the gait parameters (d=0.313-0.646). The ICO fatigue affected gait with a large effect (d=0.524-2.048). CONCLUSION The ECO fatigue and the ICO fatigue led to clinically important changes in long-range gait parameters and the ICO fatigue had a greater effect on gait than ECO fatigue. It was suggested that clinicians add ICO muscle endurance training to improve the physical performance of individuals.

Abstract
Sports science focuses on enhancing athletes' performance, requiring a multifaceted approach. It is evolving from a purely muscle-centred approach to an interdisciplinary one. This paper investigates built environment design science, a dimension less explored in relation to enhancing athlete performance in sports science. The discussion is divided into three categories: athlete-centric training built environment design, enhanced fan and community engagement, and improved integrative accessibility. The study also identifies future research directions, including evidence of the relative impact of the built environment, financial aspects, and performance evaluation methods. Collaboration between sports scientists and scholars in urban design, parks, transportation, landscape architecture and environmental psychology is necessary to advance this topic further.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION After an ankle sprain, up to 20% of patients may develop chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI) requiring surgical treatment. The objective of this study was to investigate the functional outcomes and rates of return to sport activities in a cohort of non-athlete patients with chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI) who underwent the opened Brostrom-Gould technique (BGT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-nine patients (seventy-nine feet) from three different centers undergoing BGT were reviewed. For clinical and functional analysis, the AOFAS ankle-hindfoot scale was applied and rates of return to sport activities were assessed. Correlation of Δ-AOFAS and rates of return to sport activities with all variables analyzed was performed. RESULTS Mean AOFAS score improved from 64.6 to 97.2 (p < 0.001). Sixty-one (77.2%) returned to preinjury activities and 18 (22.8%) changed to a lower-level modality. Symptoms of instability were related to Δ-AOFAS (p = 0.020). Change in the sport activity was related to pain and symptoms of instability (p = 0.41 and p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Recreational athlete patients who underwent the BGT demonstrated excellent functional outcomes after a mean follow-up of 7 years. Residual pain and symptoms of instability after surgery were the main complaints associated with limitations in physical activities.

Abstract
Growing numbers of researchers have investigated how training programmes influence coaches' and teachers' ability to promote life skills development, and concurrently, athlete-related outcomes. This study aimed to examine high school student-athletes' development of life skills through a three-year programme called Winner for Life (Gagnant pour la vie). Delivered online to high school coaches and teachers, the programme targeted five life skills: (a) Goal Setting and Concentration (Year 1), (b) Healthy Eating Habits and Safety Behaviours (Year 2), and Physical and Mental Recovery (Year 3). In all, 148 student-athletes participated in the programme and completed questionnaires at five time points to assess life skills development. A general linear repeated measures model was used to assess changes over time. Missing data were handled using multiple imputations. Student-athletes reported higher scores on Goal Setting subscale at time 2 (vs. time 1) and time 3 (vs. time 2) and on Social Recovery subscale at time 2 (vs. time 1). They also reported lower scores on Sleep Quality subscale at time 3 (vs. time 2) and time 5 (vs. time 4). Additionally, a significant interaction was observed between student-athletes' age (mean = 13.5 years) at study start, and improvements on certain life skills subscales over time. Overall, the fact that student-athletes did not improve on all life skills could be explained by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, which limited the programme's influence from time 3. Results should be considered in light of limitations regarding gender distribution and ceiling effects on student-athletes' scores. Recommendations to improve future life skills programmes are discussed, such as involving parents in delivery and encouraging life skills teaching over time.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the prognostic impact of bystander-initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and public-access automated external defibrillator (AED) use on non-traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) occurring during school-supervised sports activities in children. Methods From a nationwide database of pediatric OHCAs occurring under school supervision in Japan, data between April 2008 and December 2020 were obtained. We analyzed non-traumatic OHCAs that occurred during school-supervised sports activities among schoolchildren from elementary, junior high, high, and technical colleges. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to evaluate the effect of basic life support (BLS) on 1-month survival with favorable neurological outcomes after OHCA. Results In total, 318 OHCA cases were analyzed. The 1-month survival with favorable neurological outcomes was 64.8% (164/253) in cases receiving both bystander-CPR and AED application, 40.7% (11/27) in cases receiving CPR only, 38.5% (5/13) in patients receiving AED application only, and 28.0% (7/25) in cases receiving no bystander intervention. Compared with cases receiving no BLS, cases receiving both CPR and AED had a significantly higher proportion of 1-month survival with favorable neurological outcomes (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 3.97, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.32-11.90, p = 0.014). However, compared to cases receiving no BLS, there was no significant difference in the outcome in the cases receiving CPR only (AOR: 1.35, 95% CI: 0.34-5.29, p = 0.671) and the cases receiving AED application only (AOR: 1.26, 95% CI: 0.25-6.38, p = 0.778). Conclusion The combination of CPR and AED as BLS performed by bystanders for non-traumatic OHCA during school-supervised sports activities improved the outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess how pars interarticularis fracture characteristics on T1-VIBE and STIR MRI relate to healing and identify anatomical parameters that may impact healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review of an MRI series of lumbar pars interarticularis injuries in elite athletes over a 3-year period. Fracture configurations, signal intensities and anatomical parameters were recorded by two radiologists. Statistical analysis employed multilevel mixed-effects linear regressions, adjusted for repeated measures and baseline covariates. RESULTS Forty-seven lumbar pars interarticularis injuries among 31 athletes were assessed. On final scans for each athlete, 15% (7/47) injuries had worsened, 23% (11/47) remained stable, 43% (20/47) partially healed and 19% (9/47) healed completely. Healing times varied, quickest was 49 days for a chronic fracture in a footballer. Bone marrow oedema signal was highest in worsened fractures, followed by improved, and lowest in stable fractures. As healing progressed, T1-VIBE signal at the fracture line decreased. Bone marrow oedema and fracture line signal peaked at 90-120 days before decreasing until 210-240 days. Fractures with smaller dimensions, more vertical orientation and a longer superior articular facet beneath were significantly associated with better healing (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Most diagnosed athletic pars interarticularis injuries improve. Normalising T1-VIBE signal at the fracture line is a novel measurable indicator of bony healing. Contrastingly, bone marrow oedema signal is higher in active fractures irrespective of healing or deterioration. Injuries initially perceived as worsening may be exhibiting the normal osteoclastic phase of healing. Better outcomes favour smaller, vertical fractures with a longer superior articular facet beneath.

Abstract
Extracting the rules of real-world multi-agent behaviors is a current challenge in various scientific and engineering fields. Biological agents independently have limited observation and mechanical constraints; however, most of the conventional data-driven models ignore such assumptions, resulting in lack of biological plausibility and model interpretability for behavioral analyses. Here we propose sequential generative models with partial observation and mechanical constraints in a decentralized manner, which can model agents' cognition and body dynamics, and predict biologically plausible behaviors. We formulate this as a decentralized multi-agent imitation-learning problem, leveraging binary partial observation and decentralized policy models based on hierarchical variational recurrent neural networks with physical and biomechanical penalties. Using real-world basketball and soccer datasets, we show the effectiveness of our method in terms of the constraint violations, long-term trajectory prediction, and partial observation. Our approach can be used as a multi-agent simulator to generate realistic trajectories using real-world data.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of movement screens as a clinical tool for injury risk assessment requires variables to be extracted across specific phases of interest. While manually selecting task events is the traditional method, automated event detection is an effective technique that maintains consistency across a cohort. This study aimed to examine variations in event identification, comparing manual detection and the application of an automated algorithm, with a specific focus on a drop vertical jump task. METHODS Thirty participants cleared to return-to-play after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and thirty controls were tested. For the automated event detection, normalized vertical ground reaction force and the velocity of the sacrum marker were used to identify five events during the drop vertical jump: initial contact, end of loading, end of propulsion, second contact, and end of second loading. Two raters manually selected events and were compared to the event times of the automated algorithm. FINDINGS Manual event detection exhibited excellent reliability Significant differences between manual and automated detection were observed, particularly at events indicating the lowest squat position (Event2 and Event5). Participants who had undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction demonstrated larger differences than controls at Event5, correlating with significant squat depth disparities. INTERPRETATION While manual event detection demonstrated reliability, automated algorithms revealed differences, specifically in events of the drop vertical jump involving the lowest squat position. The automated algorithm presents potential benefits in reducing processing time and enhancing accuracy for event identification, offering valuable insights for motion capture applications in clinical settings.

Abstract
Introduction Task specific dystonia is a movement disorder only affecting a highly practiced skill and is found in a broad set of expert movements including in sports. Despite affecting many sports, there is no comprehensive review of treatment options, which is in contrast to better studied forms of task specific dystonia in musicians and writers. For this reason, studies involving an intervention to treat task specific dystonia in sports were systematically reviewed, with special attention for the quality of outcome measures. Methods The PICO systematic search strategy was employed on task-specific dystonia, and all synonyms. Inclusion criteria were peer reviewed published studies pertaining to sports, studies with a measurement and/or intervention in TSD, all in English. We excluded abstracts, expert opinions, narrative review articles, unpublished studies, dissertations and studies exclusively relating to choking. We included case reports, case studies and case-control studies. Results In April 2022 Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and Psychinfo were searched. Of the 7000 articles identified, 31 were included that described psychological and invasive and/or pharmacological interventions. There was a lack of formal standardized outcome measures in studies resulting in low quality evidence for the effectiveness of treatment options. A descriptive synthesis showed emotional regulation was effective, but was exclusively tried in golfers. Interventions like botulinum toxin or pharmacology had a similar effectiveness compared to studies in musicians dystonia, however there was almost no formal evidence for these treatments. Conclusion The quality of studies was low with a lack of standardized outcome measures. Future studies with larger cohorts and quantitative outcome measures are needed to improve understanding of treatments for task specific dystonia in athletes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent exercise intervention studies have shown promising results in improving quality of life (QoL) and physical function (PF) in diverse chronic disease and advanced cancer patients. However, the effects of structured exercise in palliative care patients, having different therapeutic needs, lower life expectancies and PFs remain unknown. This study primarily aimed to assess the feasibility of an exercise intervention with follow-up by analysing recruitment numbers, screening procedures, acceptability, preferences, and safety of the exercise intervention as well as retention in follow-up. Our secondary aims related to changes in QoL and PF. METHODS This study comprised of a one-arm design without a control group. Over 6 months, every in-hospital palliative care unit (PCU) patient was screened for eligibility. Eligible patients were asked to participate in a 2-week exercise intervention consisting of resistance training and/or endurance training with moderate or high intensity based on personal preferences and a 4-week follow-up. Before and after the exercise intervention, QoL and PF were assessed and a qualitative interview after the intervention addressed expectations and experiences of the exercise intervention. For follow-up, patients were provided with information on independent training and after 1 and 4 weeks a QoL assessment and qualitative interview were conducted. RESULTS Of 124 patients screened, 10 completed the intervention with an adherence rate of (80 ± 25%), of which 6 patients completed follow-up. Endurance training was the most performed training type and only a few minor adverse events occurred in certain or likely connection to the exercise intervention. While physical QoL and PF measured by arm curl strength and time up and go performance improved, mental QoL and the other PF tests remained unchanged. CONCLUSION Despite the challenges that were faced in our screening and testing process, that are specific to the palliative patient population with their unique therapeutic requirements and varying mental-/ physical capabilities, we discovered the 2-week exercise intervention to be feasible, safe, and well tolerated by palliative care patients. Moreover, it seems that short-term improvements in QoL and PF are possible. Further full scale studies are required to confirm our findings. TRIAL REGISTRATION The study was retrospectively registered on 25.01.2022 in the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00027861).

Abstract
Introduction Major sporting tournaments may be associated with increased birth rates 9 months afterwards, possibly due to celebratory sex. The influence of major sporting tournaments on birth patterns remains to be fully explored. Methods Studies that examined the relationship between such events and altered birth metrics (number of births and/or birth sex ratio (male/total live births)) 9(±1) months later were sought in PubMed and Scopus and reported via standard guidelines. Database searches were conducted up to 7 November 2022. Results Five events led to increased birth metrics 9(±1) months later and these included the Super Bowl, the 2009 UEFA Champions League, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the 2016 UEFA Euros and the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Several la Liga soccer matches also had effects. With a few exceptions, major American football, Association football (soccer) and Rugby apex tournaments in Africa, North America, Asia and Europe were associated with increases in the number of babies born and/or in the birth sex ratio 9(±1) months following notable team wins and/or hosting the tournament. Furthermore, unexpected losses by teams from a premier soccer league were associated with a decline in births 9 months on. Conclusions This systematic review establishes that major sporting tournaments have a notable impact on birth patterns, influencing both birth rates and sex ratios. Emotional intensification during these events likely triggers hormonal shifts, driving changes in sexual activity and subsequently shaping birth rates, often positively, about 9 months later. The context is crucial, especially when a region/country hosts a major single-sport tournament or participates for the first time, as population excitement is likely to be at its peak. These findings hold significance for healthcare planning and highlight the role of societal events in shaping demographic trends. PROSPERO registration CRD42022382971.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Environmental exposures strongly influence ALS risk and identification is needed to reduce ALS burden. Participation in hobbies and exercise may alter ALS risk and phenotype, warranting an assessment to understand their contribution to the ALS exposome. METHODS Participants with ALS and healthy controls were recruited from University of Michigan and self-completed a survey to ascertain hobbies, exercise, and avocational exposures. Exposure variables were associated with ALS risk, survival, onset segment, and onset age. RESULTS ALS (n = 400) and control (n = 287) participants self-reported avocational activities. Cases were slightly older (median age 63.0 vs. 61.1 years, p = 0.019) and had a lower educational attainment (p < 0.001) compared to controls; otherwise, demographics were well balanced. Risks associating with ALS after multiple comparison correction included golfing (odds ratio (OR) 3.48, padjusted = 0.004), recreational dancing (OR 2.00, padjusted = 0.040), performing gardening or yard work (OR 1.71, padjusted = 0.040) five years prior to ALS and personal (OR 1.76, padjusted = 0.047) or family (OR 2.21, padjusted = 0.040) participation in woodworking, and personal participation in hunting and shooting (OR 1.89, padjusted = 0.040). No exposures associated with ALS survival and onset. Those reporting swimming (3.86 years, padjusted = 0.016) and weightlifting (3.83 years, padjusted = 0.020) exercise 5 years prior to ALS onset had an earlier onset age. DISCUSSION The identified exposures in this study may represent important modifiable ALS factors that influence ALS phenotype. Thus, exposures related to hobbies and exercise should be captured in studies examining the ALS exposome.

Abstract
There is increasing interest in the potential long-term outcomes of participation in contact and collision sports, driven by evidence of higher rates of neurodegenerative diseases among former athletes. Recent research has capitalised on large-scale administrative health data to examine health outcomes in contact sport athletes. However, there is limited research on outcomes associated with participation in rugby union, a contact sport with a relatively high incidence of head trauma and musculoskeletal injuries. Additionally, there is scope to investigate a greater range of health outcomes using large, population-based administrative data. The Kumanu Tāngata project is a retrospective cohort study that will use linked information from the New Zealand Rugby Register and health records within a comprehensive deidentified whole-population administrative research database known as the Integrated Data Infrastructure. First-class male rugby union players (N=13 227) will be compared with a general population comparison group (N=2 438 484; weighting will be applied due to demographic differences) on a range of mortality and morbidity outcomes (neurodegenerative diseases, musculoskeletal conditions, chronic physical conditions, mental health outcomes). A range of player-specific variables will also be investigated as risk factors. Analyses will consist primarily of Cox proportional hazards models. Ethics approval for the study has been granted by the Auckland Health Research Ethics Committee (Ref. AH23203). Primary research dissemination will be via peer-reviewed journal articles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterise the prevalence, incidence rate (IR) and burden of injuries in elite short-course triathletes over a 4-year training and competition period. METHODS Fifty elite Australian triathletes were prospectively monitored for injury during four consecutive seasons (2018-2021). Injuries requiring medical attention were prospectively recorded and further subcategorised according to time loss. The IR and burden (injury IR×mean injury severity) were calculated per 365 athlete days, with sex differences in IR compared using IR ratios (IRR) from negative binomial regression models. RESULTS Two hundred and sixty-six injuries were reported in 46 (92.0%) athletes, of which 67.3% resulted in time loss. The injury IR was 1.87 injuries per 365 athlete days (95% CI 1.70 to 2.80), and comparable between sexes (IRR 0.82, 95% CI 0.64 to 1.04, p=0.109). Most injuries (70.7%) were training related. The most frequently injured body sites were the ankle (15.8%), foot (12.4%) and lower leg (12.0%). Bone stress injuries (BSIs) were the most burdensome injury type with 31.38 days of time loss per 365 days (95% CI 24.42 to 38.34). Twenty athletes (40.0%) reported at least one bone stress injury (BSI) (range 0-3). The rate of BSIs in female athletes was three times greater compared with male athletes (IRR 2.99, 95% CI 1.26 to 7.07, p=0.013). CONCLUSION Two-thirds of injuries reported in elite short-course triathletes resulted in time loss, with the majority occurring during training activities. Foot, ankle and other lower leg injuries had the highest incidence, with BSIs carrying the highest injury burden. The considerably higher rate of BSI observed in female athletes warrants consideration for future prevention strategies in female triathletes.

Abstract
Most sports science research revolves around male subjects. As a result, most of the knowledge and practices within sports are male-centric. Failing to take the biological, psychological and social (biopsychosocial) particularities of females into account is believed to hinder optimal sports participation, development and performance, with potential negative effects on the health and well-being of females. To close the knowledge gap and alleviate these issues, we aim to develop and evaluate a 12-video educational intervention that addresses female-specific subject matter: the FIDES Athlete Development Programme. The study is designed as an embedded multiple case study where at least 1320 Swedish female athletes aged 13-16 will participate, in addition to their parents and their coaches. The girls will be recruited through their sports clubs, with half being exposed to the FIDES Athlete Development Programme and the other half serving as control cases. The primary outcomes are well-being and sporting experience. To further increase our understanding of the intervention and its implications, interviews and focus group interviews with a reference group of girls and focus group interviews with a randomly selected subsample of coaches and parents will also be performed. The project is approved by the Swedish ethics committee (number: 2023-05264-01) and will be carried out in compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Results from the project will be published open access in peer-reviewed journals, at national and international conferences, in mass media, and a PhD thesis. The anonymised data will be made openly available in a data repository.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review, summarise and appraise findings of published systematic reviews, with/without meta-analyses, examining associations between Ramadan fasting observance (RO), health-related indices and exercise test performances in athletes and physically active individuals. DESIGN Overview of systematic reviews with assessment of reviews' methodological quality. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, SPORTDiscus, ProQuest, PsycINFO and SciELO. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES Systematic reviews with/without meta-analyses examining associations of RO with health-related indices and exercise performances in athletes and physically active individuals. RESULTS Fourteen systematic reviews (seven with meta-analyses) of observational studies, with low-to-critically-low methodological quality, were included. Two reviews found associations between RO and decreased sleep duration in athletes and physically active individuals. One review suggested athletes may experience more pronounced reductions in sleep duration than physically active individuals. One review found associations between RO and impaired sleep quality in athletes and physically active individuals. RO was associated with decreased energy, carbohydrate and water intake in adult-aged athletes, but not adolescents. One review suggests RO was associated with athletes' increased feelings of fatigue and decreased vigour. No association was found between RO and athletes' lean mass or haematological indices. RO was unfavourably associated with changes in athletes' performance during high-intensity exercise testing. CONCLUSION Continuance of training during RO could be associated with athletes' mood state disturbances, decreased sleep duration and performance decline during high-intensity exercise testing, while preserving lean mass. However, careful interpretation is necessary due to the low-to-critically-low methodological quality of the included reviews.

Abstract
Differentiating between ECG patterns related to athletes' heart remodeling and pathological findings is a challenge in sports cardiology. As the significance of fragmented complex in athletes remains uncertain, this study aimed to assess the presence of fragmented QRS in lead V1 (fQRSV1) among young athletes and its association with heart adaptations and arrhythmias. Young athletes referred for annual pre-participation screening receiving a maximal exercise testing and transthoracic echocardiography from January 2015 to March 2021 were included. The study included 684 young athletes. The prevalence of fQRSV1 was 33%. Subjects with fQRSV1 had higher exercise capacity and indexes of right ventricular function and remodeling. Among highly trained athletes, the fQRSV1 group demonstrated also increased left ventricular wall thickness. No significant association existed between fQRSV1 and exercise-induced arrhythmias, even in highly trained athletes. The high prevalence of fQRSV1 in young athletes is associated with training-induced heart adaptations but not exercise-induced ventricular arrhythmias.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The drop vertical jump (DVJ) is commonly used in return-to-play evaluations to assess movement quality and risk during a dynamic task. However, across biomechanics literature, a multitude of DVJ variations have been used, influencing the generalizability and potential interpretation of the reported findings. RESEARCH QUESTION The purpose of this study was to identify differences in lower extremity kinematics and kinetics between DVJ variations that differ based on horizontal jump distance, verbal instructions, and the use of a jump target. METHODS A single-group repeated measures design was used in a laboratory setting. Twenty participants were tested, and three-dimensional angles and moments of the pelvis, hip, knee, and ankle were computed. Wilcoxon signed rank tests were performed to determine differences between DVJ variations. RESULTS Reduced knee flexion at initial contact and greater knee extensor moments across the descent phase were observed with increased horizontal jump distance. Additionally, both verbal instructions and a jump target influenced movement strategies at the pelvis, hip, and knee. Ground reaction forces were found to be similar across conditions and jump height following the first landing increased with a target. SIGNIFICANCE Although subtle, the biomechanical differences observed between task variations emphasize the importance of standardizing motion analysis protocols for research and clinical decision-making. Given the findings of the current study, the authors recommend using the Half Height variation in patients treated for a knee injury as it will likely be the most indicative of movement quality.

Abstract
This article presents a comprehensive dataset of labeled game situations obtained from multiple professional handball matches, which corresponds to the research paper entitled "PlayNet: Real-time Handball Play Classification with Kalman Embeddings and Neural Networks" [1]. The dataset encompasses approximately 11 hours of footage from five handball games played in two different arenas, resulting in around 1 million data frames. Each frame has been meticulously labeled using seven distinct game situation classes (left and right attacks, left and right transitions, left and right penalties, and timeouts). Notably, the dataset does not contain video frames, but provides a synthetic normalized representation of each frame. This representation includes information about player, referee, and ball positions, as well as player and referee velocities, for every labeled game situation. We obtained said details automatically by using an object detector to infer the positions of players, referees, and the ball in each frame. After tracking the detected agent positions across frames, the extracted coordinates underwent normalization through a "bird's eye" perspective transform, ensuring that the data remained unaffected by variations in camera configurations across different arenas. Finally, a Kalman filter was applied to improve the robustness of player positions and derive their velocities. The labeling process was performed by domain experts employing a custom system designed to annotate game situations, considering the play type and its contextual setting. In conclusion, researchers can utilize this dataset for several purposes: game analysis, automated broadcasting, or game summarization. Furthermore, this dataset can contribute to a broader understanding of the relationship between player dynamics and game situations, shedding light on the level of granularity required for accurately classifying them.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Football is a globally played sport that poses potential risks for musculoskeletal injuries. Upper-limb injuries have a lower incidence rate than lower-limb injuries but can still cause absenteeism and performance impairment in football players. This descriptive epidemiological study aimed to evaluate and compare the epidemiological data on shoulder injuries among professional football players in two major Brazilian football championships. METHODS Data were collected throughout the championships, and club physicians medically evaluated each player during official games using two online forms. The collected information included the player's age and position, injury diagnosis, laterality, location on the field where the injury occurred, playing time, imaging examinations performed, need for surgical treatment, time to return to play (TRP), and recurrence of the injury. The incidence of injuries was evaluated using the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) incidence formula. RESULTS A total of 107 shoulder injuries were recorded (4.3% of all injuries), with a FIFA incidence of 0.847. Glenohumeral dislocations (GHDs) and acromioclavicular dislocations (ACDs) accounted for 37.38% and 35.51% of all shoulder injuries, respectively. Goalkeepers and defenders presented, respectively, a 2.15 and 1.57 times increased risk of suffering shoulder injuries, while attackers presented a 0.63 times decreased risk. Injury recurrence was observed in 14.95% of cases, with GHDs and ACDs showing recurrence rates of 35.00% and 5.26%, respectively. Surgery was performed in 9.35% of cases, with GHDs representing 50% of all surgeries. The average TRP was 22.37 days, with severe and major injuries accounting for 11.21% and 10.28% of all injuries, respectively. Goalkeepers had the highest average TRP of 36.15 days. Recurring injuries had a higher average TRP of 33.44 days compared to nonrecurring injuries, which had an average TRP of 20.43 days. Surgically treated injuries had the highest average TRP of 112.5 days. CONCLUSION Shoulder injuries in the professional football scenario are of great concern due to the high recurrence rate and need for surgical treatment, which will lead to a long TRP. These findings emphasize the need to implement prevention protocols and effective treatments to reduce the consequences of such injuries, which are usually underestimated in this sport. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The first objective was to establish the respective factor structures of a concussion perceptions inventory that was adapted for youth athletes (ages 8-14 years) and their parents from the Perceptions of Concussion Inventory for Athletes. The second objective was to understand the associations between the concussion perceptions of youth athlete-parent dyads. METHOD In this cross-sectional study, 329 parent-youth athlete dyads completed a respective concussion perception inventory. Mean age of youth respondents was 10.9 ± 1.8 years (70.1% male) and mean age of parent respondents was 40.5 ± 13.6 years (60.9% female). RESULTS Exploratory factor analyses revealed unique 7-factor structures for both the youth athlete and parent inventories (youth athlete: anxiety, clarity, treatment, permanent injury, symptom variability, long-term outcomes, and personal control; parent: anxiety, clarity, treatment, permanent injury, symptom variability, and long-term outcomes, and affect others). Weak associations were found between dyads on the 5 factors that were composed of identical items (anxiety, clarity, treatment, permanent injury, and symptom variability). CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that this adapted inventory has adequate psychometric properties to be used in the study of the concussion perceptions of youth athletes and their parents. Weak correlations across the concussion perceptions in the dyads suggest that parents and children hold different concussion perceptions and this should be considered in instrument selection of future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to explore the determinants of health comparisons (i.e., how individuals rate their health compared to other individuals in their age bracket) in the general adult population (total sample and in different age groups). METHODS Data were used from the general adult population in Germany (wave 46, n = 3,876 individuals; November 2021 to January 2022), based on the GESIS panel, which is a probability-based mixed-mode panel. Health comparisons were used as outcome measure. Socioeconomic, lifestyle-related and health-related determinants were included in regression analysis. Robustness checks were conducted. RESULTS Regressions showed that more favorable health comparisons were associated with being male (among individuals up to 39 years), higher age (among the total sample), higher education (among the total sample and individuals up to 39 years), higher income (among the total sample and individuals aged 40 to 64 years), not "being married, and living together with a spouse" (among the total sample), never eating meat (among the total sample, individuals up to 39 years and particularly individuals aged 40 to 64 years), drinking alcohol (among the total sample, individuals aged 40 to 64 years and individuals aged 65 years and over), a higher frequency of sports activities (all groups) and a higher satisfaction with health (also in all groups). CONCLUSION In addition to the evident link between health satisfaction and health comparisons, regression analysis revealed that certain socioeconomic factors, such as a higher income level, along with positive lifestyle-related factors - especially among middle-aged individuals - were significantly associated with more positive health comparisons. This knowledge is required in order to support individuals at risk for negative health comparisons. This is important because negative health comparisons can contribute to poor well-being and poor health outcomes.

Abstract
Background Stabilometry, the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) or the Emery balance test (EBT) are reported in the literature to reflect changes after an intervention in monopodal postural stability. Even so, the responsiveness of those tests has not been evaluated after an instability training programme or analysed using multiple statistical indicators of responsiveness. The main aim of this study was to analyse the responsiveness of the stabilometry, mSEBT or EBT. Methods Thirty healthy recreational athletes performed a 4-week programme with three weekly sessions of instability training of the dominant lower limb and were evaluated using stabilometry, mSEBT, and EBT tests. Responsiveness was quantified based on internal and external responsiveness. Results EBT and all parameters in mSEBT for the dominant lower limb showed large internal responsiveness (SRM > 0.8). Furthermore, mSEBT values for the non-dominant lower limb (except anterior displacement) also experienced significant changes with an associated large internal responsiveness. None of the stabilometry platform parameters showed a significant change after the intervention. The ability of the EBT to discriminate between the dominant and non-dominant lower limb (i.e., trained vs untrained, respectively) was generally acceptable (AUCs = 0.708). However, none of the parameters of the mSEBT test showed an acceptable AUC. Conclusions EBT showed a positive responsiveness after instability training compared to mSEBT, which only showed internal responsiveness, or stabilometry platform measures, whose none of the parameters could identify these changes.

Abstract
The celebrated side of sports is the high-intensity display of athleticism and competition that draws spectators to the stands, televisions, and streaming services. That version of sports is presented as the hotly contested, highly sought-after glory that the competitors sacrifice their time and bodies to pursue. The competitive passion for sport can be observed at every level of sport: from youth sports leagues to elite and professional sports competitions. This chapter will peel back the layers of sports to expose the elements that are not glamorous or celebrated. It will explore the staggering costs under the surface: to athletes, members of the athlete's entourage, and teammates when maltreatment occurs. It will also outline the role of the team physician in providing a safe clinical environment and tools to navigate disclosure and beyond.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Posterior capsulolabral repair (posterior Bankart) is effective to restore shoulder stability and relieve pain, though a recent meta-analysis reported recurrent instability in 9.5% of patients, and that only 62.7% were able to resume sports. The purpose of this study was to assess the outcomes of arthroscopic posterior capsulolabral repair in a population of unselected patients, in terms of recurrence of instability, clinical scores, and return to sports. METHODS The authors retrospectively studied a consecutive series of 22 patients that underwent posterior capsulolabral repair between 2009 and 2019. Patients were assessed before posterior capsulolabral repair and at a minimum follow-up of 24 months, in terms of subjective shoulder value (SSV), Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (WOSI), as well as level of sport. Following surgery, all complications, reoperations or episodes of instability were noted. RESULTS The cohort comprised 21 men (95%) and 1 woman (5%), aged 38.8 ± 12.5 years (range 17-61) at index surgery. Of the 20 patients that performed sports, only 2 (10%) stopped sports after surgery, while 18 resumed their main sport (90%). At a follow-up of 65.4 ± 34.8 months (range 25-146), the SSV was 85.1 ± 14.7, pain on VAS was 1.9 ± 2.1, and the Constant-Murley score was 71.6 ± 17.9. Five patients had subjective instability without dislocation (23%). Nine patients (41%) had no pain (0 points), 6 patients (27%) had mild pain (1-2 points), 4 patients (18%) had moderate pain (3 points), while 3 patients (14%) had severe pain (5-8 points). CONCLUSION Arthroscopic posterior capsulolabral repair prevented recurrent dislocation in patients with posterior shoulder instability at a minimum follow-up of 2 years, despite persistent pain in 32%, and subjective instability in 23%. These complications were mainly observed in patients with work-related accidents and glenoid cartilage lesions. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III, case series.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In the USA, lumbar discectomy is one of the most commonly performed spinal procedures. As certain sports are considered to be major risk factors for disc herniation, the question remains as to when highly active patients should return to their previous level of activity. This study aimed to analyze spine surgeons' opinions on when patients may return to activities following discectomy as well as their underlying rationale for their decision. METHODS A questionnaire was designed by five different fellowship-trained spine surgeons for the 168 members of the Spine Society of Australia. Questions on the surgeons experience, decision making, preferred surgical technique, the postoperative rehabilitation and the response to patient expectations were included. RESULTS In total, 83.9% of surgeons discuss the postoperative level of activity with their patients. Sport is considered as an important contributor for good functional outcome by 71.0% of surgeons. Surgeons recommend avoiding, often permanently, weightlifting (35.7%) of the time, rugby (21.4%), horseback riding (17.9%) as well as martial arts (14.3%) postoperatively even with previous training. The return to high levels of activity is considered as a major risk factor for disc herniation recurrence by 25.8% of surgeons. Return to high level of activity is typically recommended after 3 months by 48.4% of surgeons. CONCLUSION So far no consensus on the rehabilitation protocol and return to level of activity exists. Recommendations depend on personal experience as well as the individuals' training, and typically, a period of avoidance of sport for up to 3 months is recommended. Abstract
BACKGROUND Throughout official soccer matches, the presence of cheer by the crowd could be considered a critical auditive distraction that could further impair the cognitive interference control system, multiple object tracking (MOT) skill, heart rate variability (HRV), and increase mental fatigue. As the resource is not immediately replenished, the impairment of the cognitive interference control system may be delayed following a soccer game. Then, evaluating the recovery time course of the cognitive interference control system, MOT skill, HRV, and mental fatigue after prolonged tasks combining physical, endurance, and cognitive effort are essential. PURPOSE We aimed to analyze the acute effect of cognitive effort and auditive distractor with 24-h follow-up throughout a prolonged endurance session on inhibitory control, subjective mental fatigue, MOT skill, and HRV in professional soccer players. METHODS Twenty professional male soccer players were recruited (23.56 ± 3.8 years, 78.1 ± 6.9 kg, 1.77 ± 0.06 m, and 12.5 ± 5.3% body fat). The sessions were performed in a randomized and counterbalanced crossover design, divided into four experimental conditions: endurance, endurance + MOT, endurance + MOT + AD, and endurance + AD. The soccer players completed the incongruent Stroop task utilizing an eye-tracker to assess cognitive effort. MOT task, subjective mental fatigue, and HRV were evaluated before the endurance training (60%Δ of maximal aerobic velocity during 40-min) and after 30-min and 24-h of recovery. These sessions were designed to investigate the acute effect of prolonged cognitive effort (repeated MOT throughout the endurance task) and AD (constant crowd noise and coach's voice each 15-40 s, totalizing = 80 voices) on inhibitory control, MOT skills, HRV, and subjective mental fatigue after a fixed endurance training session. RESULTS There was no condition × time interaction for accuracy of inhibitory control (p > 0.05, ηp2 = 0.001). There was a significant condition × time interaction for inhibitory control response time (p < 0.05, ηp2 = 0.16). A higher response time of inhibitory control was found for the endurance + MOT + AD and endurance + MOT experimental sessions (p < 0.05). There was a significant condition × time interaction for subjective mental fatigue (p < 0.05, ηp2 = 0.46). A higher subjective mental fatigue was found for the endurance + MOT + AD and endurance + MOT experimental sessions (p < 0.05). There was no condition × time interaction for HRV (p > 0.05, ηp2 = 0.02). CONCLUSION We concluded that cognitive effort throughout a prolonged endurance session impaired inhibitory control and increased mental fatigue without promoting greater MOT skill and HRV changes in professional soccer players.

Abstract
In ice hockey, speed strength is one of the major physical key performance indicators, which is significantly influenced by maximum strength. The objective of this study was to evaluate the age-dependent relationship of off-ice maximum strength and vertical jump performance with on-ice linear sprint performance, considering age and performance level. Ninety-one male youth and adult professional ice hockey players (age: 19.3 ± 5.49 years) were recruited and divided into four age groups: under 16, 18, 21 years old and professional elite players (Pro) (i.e., > 21 years). They were tested in maximal isometric strength, squat jump (loaded and unloaded), countermovement jump and on-ice sprint performance (15 m and 30 m linear sprint; 15 m flying linear sprint). Statistical analysis revealed that on-ice sprint performance correlated with isometric strength performance (r = |0.34|-|0.63|) and with off-ice jump performance (r = |0.61|-|0.77|) without an influence of age group or performance level. However, performance differed between age groups and performance level, the largest differences being found between the youngest age group (U16) and the Pro group (g = 0.966-3.281). The present study shows that maximum strength influences on-ice sprint performances in ice hockey players, as well as performance differences between age groups and professional players. Strength and jumping performance should therefore be included in regular performance testing in ice hockey. Since performance differences are observed for almost all strength and speed-strength performances of the youth teams to the Pros, training of these variables is strongly recommended to improve in the transition phase from junior to elite level.

Abstract
American football has the highest rate of concussions in United States high school sports. Within American football, impact against the playing surface is the second-most common mechanism of injury. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a difference in impact deceleration between natural grass and synthetic turf high school football fields. A Century Body Opponent Bag (BOB) manikin was equipped with a Riddell football helmet and 3 accelerometers were placed on the forehead, apex of the head, and right ear. The manikin was dropped from a stationary position onto its front, back, and left side onto natural grass (n = 10) and synthetic turf (n = 9) outdoor football fields owned and maintained by public and private institutions on O'ahu, Hawai'i. Data was collected on 1,710 total drops. All accelerometers in forward and backward falls, and 1 accelerometer in side falls showed significantly greater impact deceleration on synthetic turf compared to the natural grass surfaces (P < .05). The results of this study provide evidence-based rationale to inform youth sports policies, particularly those aimed at injury prevention through safer playing environments and equipment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE International guidelines support a repertoire of therapeutic interventions that may assist recovery following concussion. We aimed to systematically review the efficacy of early pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions initiated within two weeks of injury on symptoms and functional recovery of adults with concussion. METHODS We conducted a Systematic Review (SR) of Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) without meta-analysis utilising the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed of four databases. Study inclusion criteria were adult participants diagnosed with concussion and commencing active intervention within 14 days of injury. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Of 7531 studies identified, 11 were included in the final review. Six studies were rated as high-risk of bias, three with some concerns and two as low-risk of bias. We found no evidence to support specific pharmacotherapeutic management to hasten the natural recovery time-course. Two studies reported significant improvement in selected concussion symptoms following manual therapy (at 48-72 hours post-treatment) or telephone counselling interventions (at 6 months post-injury). No high quality RCTs demonstrate superior effects of early therapeutic interventions on concussion recovery in the first 2 weeks. We advocate future research to examine impacts of health-clinician contact points aligned with symptom-specific interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Explore whether injury profiles and mechanisms differ between red (First-Class multi-day) ball cricket and white (One-Day and Twenty20 limited over) ball cricket in elite men's domestic cricket from 2010 to 2019. DESIGN Retrospective cohort analysis. METHODS Injury incidence calculated according to the updated international consensus statement on injury surveillance in cricket, along with seasonal days lost and injury severity descriptive statistics. RESULTS Across both cricket types, bowling resulted in the most seasonal days lost (mean 1942, 95 % confidence interval: 1799-2096) and highest mean injury severity (30 days, 95 % confidence interval: 28-33), with the lumbar spine the body region with the most seasonal days lost (mean 432 seasonal days; 95 % confidence interval: 355-525) from bowling. Injury incidence was higher in white ball compared to red ball cricket (per unit of time), with bowling (and its various phases) the most frequently occurring mechanism in both cricket types (white ball: 67.0 injuries per 1000 days of play [95 % confidence interval: 59.6-75.3]; red ball: 32.4 injuries per 1000 days of play [95 % confidence interval: 29.1-36.1]). When bowling, the abdomen and thigh were the body regions most injured from white (13.4 injuries per 1000 days of play [95 % confidence interval: 10.3-17.4]), and red ball (6.4 injuries per 1000 days of play [95 % confidence interval: 5.0-8.2]) cricket respectively. Overall, clear differences emerged in the nature and mechanism of injuries between red ball cricket and white ball cricket. CONCLUSIONS Bowling presents the highest injury risk (across both cricket types), as well as highlighting the increased risk of injuries from diving during fielding and running between the wickets when batting, in shorter white ball cricket.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Promoting adolescent sports participation and physical activity may be effective low-barrier prevention strategies for co-occurring adolescent substance use (SU) and mental health symptoms (MH). The objectives of this study were to: 1) explore associations between profiles of SU/MH and sports participation; and 2) determine whether physical activity and belongingness account for these associations. METHODS Data came from a representative sample of 11,994 grade 9-12 Ontarian students (ages ~14-18) previously grouped into five SU/MH profiles based on patterns of use and symptoms. A series of multinomial logistic regressions, adjusted for socio-demographics and school clustering, were used to predict the risks of students belonging to SU/MH profiles based on: 1) school sports participation (>=weekly), 2) sports and physical activity (>=60minutes; 0-7 days), and 3) sports, physical activity, and school belongingness. RESULTS Greater school sports participation, physical activity, and belongingness were each associated with reduced risks of belonging to most profiles with elevations in SU and/or MH symptoms relative to the low SU/MH profile (Relative Risk Ratios: sports=0.62-0.87, physical activity=0.78-0.98, belonging=0.75-0.83). Frequency of physical activity accounted for ~32-60% of the associations between sports and SU/MH profiles, while school belongingness accounted for the remaining associations. Physical activity and belongingness remained independently associated with SU/MH profiles. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest possible indirect associations between school sports participation and SU/MH profiles through physical activity and school belongingness, which may be promising prevention targets that have independent associations over and above sports. School sports participation may be one of a number of ways to achieve these goals.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of low back pain (LBP) in adult professional soccer players. Methods Systematic review and meta-analysis. Results The review included 44 studies. The pooled prevalence of LBP during ≤ 1 season was 1% (95%CI = 0-4%) in men. The pooled point prevalence of LBP was 25% (95%CI = 16-36%) in men and 28% (95%CI = 20-37%) in women. The pooled past-year prevalence of LBP was 34% (95%CI = 24-44%) in men. The pooled lifetime prevalence of LBP was 32% (95%CI = 25-39%) in men and 50% (95%CI = 32-69%) in women. The pooled frequency of LBP/total number of injuries was 2% (95%CI = 1-3%) in men and 4% (95%CI = 2-5%) in women. The pooled incidence rate of LBP/1,000 player-hours of exposure was 0.30 (95%CI = 0.17- 0.53) in men and 0.32 (95%CI = 0.06 -1.87) in women. The recurrence of LBP ranged from 3% to 63% in men. The intensity of LBP ranged from 1.68 (2.39) to 4.87 (2.14) points on a 0-10 scale (minimum = 0 and maximum = 8 points). The severity of LBP (days absent from professional activities due to pain) ranged from 2 (0) to 10 (19) days (minimum = 1 and maximum = 28 days). Conclusion Adult elite soccer players have a substantial prevalence of LBP. The frequency and incidence of LBP (compared with other conditions and sports) seems to be low. Abstract
BACKGROUND Symptomatic COVID-19 and Long COVID, also referred to as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) or post-COVID conditions, have been widely reported in young, healthy people, but their prevalence has not yet been determined in student athletes. We sought to estimate the prevalence of reported COVID-19, symptomatic COVID-19, and Long COVID in college athletes in the United States attending 18 schools from spring 2020 to fall 2021. METHODS We developed an online survey to measure the prevalence of student athletes who tested positive for COVID-19, developed Long COVID, and did not return to their sport during the relevant time period. We surveyed a convenience sample of 18 collegiate school administrators, representing about 7,000 student athletes. Of those schools surveyed, 16 responded regarding the spring 2020 semester, and 18 responded regarding the full academic year of fall 2020 to spring 2021 (both semesters). RESULTS According to the survey responses, there were 9.8% of student athletes who tested positive for COVID-19 in spring 2020 and 25.4% who tested positive in the academic year of fall 2020 to spring 2021. About 4% of student athletes who tested positive from spring 2020 to spring 2021 developed Long COVID, defined as new, recurring, or ongoing physical or mental health consequences occurring 4 or more weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights that Long COVID occurs among young, healthy athletes and is a real consequence of COVID-19. Understanding the prevalence of Long COVID in this population requires longer follow-up and further study.
