Effect of post-curing conditions on surface characteristics, physico-mechanical properties, and cytotoxicity of a 3D-printed denture base polymer

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to investigate the influence of post-polymerization (post-curing) conditions on surface characteristics, flexural properties, water sorption and solubility, and cytotoxicity of additively manufactured denture base materials.

METHODS

The tested specimens were additively manufactured using digital light processing and classified into different post-curing condition groups: submerged in water (WAT), submerged in glycerin (GLY), and air exposure (AIR). An uncured specimen (UNC) was used as a control. The surface topography and roughness were observed. The flexural strength and modulus were determined via a three-point bending test. The water sorption and solubility were subsequently tested. Finally, an extract test was performed to assess cytotoxicity.

RESULTS

Different post-curing conditions had no significant effects on the surface topography and roughness (Sa value). Various post-curing conditions also had no significant effects on the flexural strength. Notably, the flexural modulus of the WAT group (2671.80 ± 139.42 MPa) was significantly higher than the AIR group (2197.47 ± 197.93 MPa, p = 0.0103). After different post-curing conditions, the water sorption and solubility of the specimens met the ISO standards. Finally, all post-curing conditions effectively reduced cytotoxic effects.

SIGNIFICANCES

Post-curing with different oxygen levels improved flexural properties, and flexural modulus significantly increased after the specimens were submerged in water. In addition, water sorption and solubility, and cytocompatibility were optimized by post-curing, irrespective of the post-curing conditions. Therefore, the water-submerged conditions optimized the flexural modulus of the 3D-printed denture base materials.

Preparation of a fluorinated dental resin system and its anti-adhesive properties against S. mutans

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to characterize physicochemical properties and investigate anti-bacterial adhesion effect of dental resins containing fluorinated monomers.

METHOD

Fluorinated dimethacrylate FDMA was mixed with commonly used reactive diluent triethylene- glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and fluorinated diluent 1 H,1 H-heptafluorobutyl methacrylate (FBMA) separately at a mass ratio of 60 wt./40 wt. to prepare fluorinated resin systems. Double bond conversion (DC), flexural strength (FS) and modulus (FM), water sorption (WS) and solubility (SL), contact angle and surface free energy, surface element concentration, and anti-adhesion effect against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) were investigated according to standard or referenced methods. 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloy-loxypropyl)-phenyl]propane (Bis-GMA)/TEGDMA (60/40, wt./wt.) was used as control.

RESULTS

Both fluorinated resin systems had higher DC than Bis-GMA based resin (p < 0.05); compared with Bis-GMA based resin (FS, FDMA/TEGDMA resin system had higher FS (p < 0.05) and comparable FM (p > 0.05), while FDMA/FBMA resins system had lower FS and FM (p < 0.05). Both fluorinated resin systems had lower WS and SL than Bis-GMA based resin (p < 0.05), and FDMA/TEGDMA resin system had the lowest WS (p < 0.05) in all experimental resin systems. Only FDMA/FBMA resin system showed lower surface free energy than Bis-GMA based resin (p < 0.05). When the surface was smooth, FDMA/FBMA resin system had lower amount of adherent S. mutans than Bis-GMA based resin (p < 0.05), while after the surface became roughness, FDMA/FBMA resin system had comparable amount of adherent S. mutans as Bis-GMA based resin (p > 0.05).

SIGNIFICANCE

Resin system prepared exclusively with fluorinated methacrylate monomers reduced the S. mutans adhesion due to their increased hydrophobicity and decreased surface energy., while flexural properties of it should be improved.

Flexural Properties and Hardness of CAD-CAM Denture Base Materials

PURPOSE

To compare flexural strength, elastic modulus, and surface hardness of CAD-CAM milled, 3D-printed, and heat-polymerized denture base resins.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 120 specimens were fabricated from heat-polymerized acrylic resin (HP), milled resin (Avadent and IvoCad), and 3D-printed resin (ASIGA, FormLabs, and NextDent). The specimens were divided into 6 groups according to the type of denture base material n = 20/material, (10/flexural properties and 10/hardness). Flexural strength and elastic modulus of the specimens were evaluated by 3-point bending test and surface hardness by Vickers hardness test. To test flexural properties, the specimens were fabricated according to ISO 20795-1:2013 standards (64×10×3.3 ±0.2 mm). The dimensions for hardness test were 15×10×2.5 ±0.2 mm. Scanning electron microscope was used to evaluate the surface morphology of the fractured specimens. The means and standard deviations were calculated, followed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Milled resins showed significantly higher values for flexural strength, elastic modulus, and surface hardness, followed by HP then 3D-printed resins (P<0.001). In between milled groups, flexural strength of AvaDent was significantly higher than IvoCad (P<0.001), while elastic modulus and hardness didn't show significant difference. In between 3D-printed resins, ASIGA showed the highest flexural strength and elastic modulus, insignificantly with FormLabs (P = 0.595) and significantly with NextDent (P = 0.008). ASIGA also showed significantly the highest hardness among the 3D-printed groups. No significant difference was found between FormLabs and NextDent flexural strength (P = 0.357), elastic modulus (P = 1.00) and surface hardness (P = 0.987).

CONCLUSION

CAD-CAM milled resins had greater flexural properties and hardness compared to heat-polymerized acrylic resin and 3D-printed resins. Although 3D-printed samples showed the lowest values of tested properties, the flexural strength and modulus were above the clinically acceptable values. This article is protected by copyright. Influence of different postcuring parameters on mechanical properties and biocompatibility of 3D printed crown and bridge resin for temporary restorations

This study analyzed the flexural properties, Vickers hardness, degree of conversion (DC), and cell viability of 3D printed crown and bridge resin postcured using various types of postcuring equipment (PCE). 3D printed specimens were postcured for various times using different types of 3D printing PCE [for 5, 15, and 30 min using LC 3D Print Box (LC), Form Cure (FC), Cure M (CM), and Veltz 3D (VE) devices] and the VALO handheld light-curing (VA) device for 20, 40, and 60 s. Neither the flexural strength (132.27-145.79 MPa) nor the flexural modulus (1.52-1.83 GPa) differed significantly when postcuring for 30 min using the LC, FC, CM, or VE device, or for 20, 40, or 60 s of postcuring using the VA device (p > 0.05). The Vickers hardness was highest after 30 min of postcuring for all groups, and varied significantly with the postcuring time in the LC (p < 0.001) and CM (p < 0.001) groups. DC was significantly higher for the 5-min CM group (84.97 ± 4.02%) than for the GS, 30-min FC, 5-min VE, and 20-s VA groups. Cell viability of the postcured resin specimens was 56.46-92.29%, and varied significantly in the CM and VE groups according to the postcuring time (p < 0.05). Confocal laser scanning microscopy observations showed well-developed cell morphology and numerous cell-cell contacts in all groups except the GS group. This study found that the use of different types of PCE did not significantly affect the flexural properties of 3D printed crown and bridge resin, whereas there were significant variations in DC, Vickers hardness, and cell viability.

Comprehensive characterisation of flexural mechanical properties and a new classification for porosity of 11 contemporary ion-leaching dental restorative materials

The objectives of this study were to evaluate 4 aspects of ion-leaching restorative materials (ILMs): 4-point bending flexural strength (4 PB-FS) and relative mechanical properties; biaxial flexural strength (B-FS) in relation to 4 PB-FS; porosity; and surface morphology. Eleven ILMs were used for the 4-point bending test. Bar-shaped (n = 15) samples were fabricated, stored in distilled water for 7 days. Then 4 PB-FS and the other mechanical properties were determined. Five ILMs were selected for the B-FS test using disk specimens (n = 15). The correlation between 4 PB-FS and B-FS was addressed. After the 4 PB test, 5 randomised fragments from each material were used to make 0.5 mm-thick sections for light microscopy to investigate the degree of porosity using reflected and transmitted lights. Eight ILMs were selected for quantitative analysis of the fractional % pore volume (PV%) due to their relative pore prominence using ImageJ software. One-way ANOVA/Dunnett's T3 was used to test for significance. Resin-based ILMs (RB-ILMs) were ranked first (p < 0.05) for 4 PB-FS values (53.3-110.2 MPa) followed by resin-modified glass-ionomer cements (RMGICs; 30.9-44.3 MPa) and high-viscosity glass-ionomer cements (HVGICs; 12.9-19.6 MPa), respectively. 'Flexural modulus' (4 PB-E) and 'flexural toughness' (4 PB-T) of ILMs varied even though similar 4 PB-FS values were observed. There was a positive correlation (p < 0.001) between 4PB-FS and B-FS (R² = 0.992) with B-FS>4 PB-FS. There was no correlation between PV% and 4 PB-FS. In summary, material type played a major role in 4 PB-FS outcomes, whereas PV% seemed to have a minor effect when evaluating each material group of ILMs. Brittleness/ductility of ILMs was observed when determining 4 PB-E and 4 PB-T relative to 4 PB-FS. When selecting materials for posterior load-bearing dental restorations in high-caries risk patients, RB-ILMs or RMGICs would be more appropriate due to their superior flexural properties compared with recently introduced HVGICs. The decision for each situation will also be dependent on further evidence of the ion-leaching capacity.

Flexural properties and wear behavior of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing resin blocks

This study investigates the flexural properties, Knoop hardness number (KHN), and wear behavior of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin blocks and compares these values with those of conventional resin composites for direct restoration (RCDs). Four CAD/CAM resin blocks and two RCDs are compared. Ten specimens per material are used to obtain the flexural properties according to ISO 6872 specifications, and five specimens per material are used for KHN measurement. For sliding impact wear testing, twelve specimens are prepared. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (LSM) is used to determine maximum facet depth and volume loss. Polished material surfaces and worn surfaces after wear testing are observed using scanning electron microscopy and LSM. While measured flexural properties and KHN are found to be material-dependent, CAD/CAM resin blocks exhibit higher wear resistance than RCDs. CAD/CAM resin blocks polymerized at high-pressure and high-temperature are found to exhibit wear behaviors far superior to those of RCDs.

Use of the fiberglass reinforcement method in thermoplastic mouthguard materials to improve flexural properties for enhancement of functionality

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of fiberglass reinforcement method in thermoplastic mouthguard materials to improve flexural properties and adhesive strength. Commonly used two types of commercial mouth guard materials (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer-based and polyolefin-based) were reinforced with glass fiber clothes by two-step hot press. Flexural strength and adhesive strength with each base material were examine via three-point bending test and delamination test, respectively. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer-based fiberglass-reinforced material has significantly greater adhesive strength with base material and improvement of flexural properties compared with polyolefin-based material. These results suggest that flexural properties of both conventional commercial mouthguard materials were improved when the glass-fiber-reinforced method was applied to reinforce mouthguard materials, and more, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer was more desirable for the base material.

Influence of different curing modes on flexural properties, fracture toughness, and wear behavior of dual-cure provisional resin-based composites

We investigated the influence of different curing modes on the mechanical properties and wear behavior of dual-cure provisional resin-based composites (DCPRs). Three DCPRs and a self-curing bis-acryl provisional resin-based composite were used. Flexural strength (σ_F), elastic modulus (E), resilience (R), and fracture toughness (K_IC) were measured. The specimens were fabricated with and without light irradiation, stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h, and subjected to 5,000 or 10,000 thermal cycles. For sliding impact wear testing, 12 specimens were prepared with and without light irradiation. The maximum facet depth and volume loss were determined using a noncontact profilometer. Some of the mechanical properties and wear behavior of DCPRs are affected by light irradiation. This study indicated that proper light irradiation is important in polymerization process of the DCPRs to enhance the wear resistance and some mechanical properties.

Bonding durability of titanium tetrafluoride treated glass fiber post with resin cement

This study evaluated the effect of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF₄) solution on the bond strength of glass fiber post to resin cement. The specimens were divided into eight groups according to the method of surface treatment performed. Flexural properties and microtensile bond strength (µTBS) were determined. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests. The highest µTBS achieved with the TiF₄ (4 wt/v%-4 min) group compared with the other groups (p<0.05). This finding could be attributed to the effectiveness of TiF₄ (4 wt/v%-4 min) on removing the surface layer of the resin matrix of fiber posts that provides more uncovered surface areas of posts which improved the micromechanical retention of the resin cement. Surface treatments did not affect the flexural properties of fiber posts (p>0.05). Surface treatment of fiber post with TiF₄ (4 wt/v%-4 min) solution exhibited higher bond strength to resin cement compared with other surface treatments.

Impact of dietary solvents on flexural properties of bulk-fill composites

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the effect of dietary solvents on flexural strength and modulus of bulk-fill composites.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One conventional composite (Filtek Z350 [FZ]), two bulk-fill composites (Filtek Bulk-fill [FB] and Tetric N Ceram [TN]) and a bulk-fill giomer (Beautifil-Bulk Restorative [BB]) were evaluated. Specimens (12 × 2 × 2 mm) were fabricated using customized stainless steel molds. Specimens were light-cured, removed from their molds, finished, measured and randomly divided into six groups. The groups (n = 10) were conditioned in the following mediums for 7 days at 37 °C: air (control), artificial saliva (SAGF), distilled water, 0.02 N citric acid, heptane, 50% ethanol-water solution. After conditioning, the specimens were rinsed, blotted dry, measured and subjected to flexural testing using a universal testing machine. Representative SEM images of the intact surfaces were obtained to appraise the degradation mechanism by dietary solvents. Data was subjected to statistical analysis using ANOVA/Tukey's tests at significance level p < 0.05.

RESULTS

Significant differences in flexural properties were observed between materials and conditioning mediums. The highest flexural properties were usually obtained with conditioning in air (control) or heptane. Exposure to aqueous solutions generally reduced flexural properties of bulk-fill composites.

CONCLUSION

The effect of dietary solvents on flexural properties of bulk-fill composites was material and medium dependent.

Glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastics for use in metal-free removable partial dentures: combined effects of fiber loading and pigmentation on color differences and flexural properties

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined effects of fiber loading and pigmentation on the color differences and flexural properties of glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (GFRTPs), for use in non-metal clasp dentures (NMCDs).

METHODS

The GFRTPs consisted mainly of E-glass fibers, a polypropylene matrix, and a coloring pigment: the GFRTPs with various fiber loadings (0, 10, and 20mass%) and pigmentations (0, 1, 2, and 4mass%) were fabricated by using an injection molding. The color differences of GFRTPs were measured based on the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) Lab color system, by comparing with a commercially available NMCD. The flexural properties of GFRTPs were evaluated by using a three-point bending test, according to International Standards Organization (ISO) specification number 20795-1.

RESULTS

The visible colors of GFRTPs with pigment contents of 2mass% were acceptable for gingival color, and the glass fibers harmonized well with the resins. The ΔE* values of the GFRTPs with pigment contents of 2mass% obtained by using the CIE Lab system were lowest at all fiber loadings. For GFRTPs with fiber contents of 10 and 20mass% at 2mass% pigment content, these GFRTPs surpassed the ISO 20795-1 specification regarding flexural strength (> 60MPa) and modulus (> 1.5GPa).

CONCLUSIONS

A combination of the results of color difference evaluation and mechanical examination indicates that the GFRTPs with fiber contents of 10 or 20mass%, and with pigment contents of 2mass% have acceptable esthetic appearance and sufficient rigidity for NMCDs.

The synthesis, modification, and application of nanosilica in polymethyl methacrylate denture base

This study aimed to investigate amount of γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) silanized on experimental nanosilica particles (NPs), amount of NP and amount of MPS silanized NP on flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), and fracture toughness (FT) of NP reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The chemisorbed amount of MPS was determined using elemental analysis. Six groups (n=8) were prepared with chemisorbed amount and mixed with PMMA-monomer to make 0.25, 0.5, 1, 5, 10 and 15% (w/w) of NP reinforced PMMA. PMMA without NP served as control. Seven groups (n=8) were prepared with 1% of NP silanized with 0, 0.061, 0.123, 0.246, 0.493, 0.987, and 1.974 g_MPS/g_silica and mixed with PMMA-monomer to make NP reinforced PMMA. FS, FM, and FT were determined using 3-point bending test. One-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons showed that 0.246 g_MPS/g_silica of 1% amount of silanized NP group was significantly highest in FS, FM, and FT compared to the others (p<0.05).

Effect of fiber content on flexural properties of glass fiber-reinforced polyamide-6 prepared by injection molding

The use of non-metal clasp denture (NMCD) materials may seriously affect the remaining tissues because of the low rigidity of NMCD materials such as polyamides. The purpose of this study was to develop a high-rigidity glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (GFRTP) composed of E-glass fiber and polyamide-6 for NMCDs using an injection molding. The reinforcing effects of fiber on the flexural properties of GFRTPs were investigated using glass fiber content ranging from 0 to 50 mass%. Three-point bending tests indicated that the flexural strength and elastic modulus of a GFRTP with a fiber content of 50 mass% were 5.4 and 4.7 times higher than those of unreinforced polyamide-6, respectively. The result showed that the physical characteristics of GFRTPs were greatly improved by increasing the fiber content, and the beneficial effects of fiber reinforcement were evident. The findings suggest that the injection-molded GFRTPs are adaptable to NMCDs because of their excellent mechanical properties.

Effects of various etching protocols on the flexural properties and surface topography of fiber-reinforced composite dental posts

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flexural properties and surface topography of fiber posts surface-treated with various etching protocols. Seventy each of three types of fiber posts: RelyX Fiber Post, Tenax Fiber Trans, and D.T. Light-Post Illusion X-Ro, were randomly divided into 7 groups: no surface treatment, surface treated with hydrofluoric acid (HF) 4.5% for 60 s, HF 4.5% for 120 s, HF 9.6% for 15 s, HF 9.6% for 60 s, HF 9.6% for 120 s, and treated with H₂O₂ 24% for 10 min. The specimens were then subjected to a three-point bending test. Surface topographies of the posts were observed using a SEM. The results indicate that fiber post surface pretreatments had no adverse effects on the flexural properties. However, the fiber posts treated with high HF concentrations or long etching times seemed to have more surface irregularities.

Assessment of clasp design and flexural properties of acrylic denture base materials for use in non-metal clasp dentures

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibilities of utilizing new acrylic denture base materials in resin clasps using three-point flexural tests and cantilever beam tests.

METHODS

Seven non-metal clasp denture (NMCD) materials and four acrylic denture base materials were used for three-point flexural tests and six NMCD materials and three acrylic denture base materials were used for cantilever beam tests. The flexural strength, elastic modulus, and 0.05% proof stress were measured by three-point flexural tests according to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 20795-1. And load at 0.5mm deformation, elastic modulus were measured by Cantilever beam tests.

RESULTS

For the three-point flexural tests, only materials that met the conditions for both flexural strength and elastic modulus were the polycarbonate Reigning N (REN) and the acrylics Acron (AC), Pro Impact (PI), Procast DSP (PC) and IvoBase High Impact (HI) which are required in ISO 20795-1, Type 3 denture base materials. And for cantilever beam tests there was no significant difference between PI and either EstheShot (ES), EstheShot Bright (ESB), REN or Acry Tone (ACT) in load at 0.5mm deformation, and no significant difference between PI and either Lucitone FRS (LTF), ES, ESB, REN or ACT in elastic modulus.

CONCLUSIONS

The results thus suggested that some of the acrylic materials used as denture base materials may also be usable for NMCDs, and that the flexural properties of the acrylic material PI resemble those of ES, ESB and ACT, meaning that similar clasp designs may also be feasible.

Flexural properties of experimental nanofiber reinforced composite are affected by resin composition and nanofiber/resin ratio

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the influence of different resin blends concentrations and nanofibers mass ratio on flexural properties of experimental Poliacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers reinforced composites.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Poliacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers mats were produced by electrospinning and characterized by tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Experimental resin-fiber composite beams were manufactured by infiltrating PAN nanofiber mats with varied concentrations of BisGMA-TEGDMA resin blends (BisGMA/TEGDMA: 30/70, 50/50 and 70/30weight%). The mass ratio of fiber to resin varied from 0% to 8%. Beams were cured and stored in water at 37°C. Flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM) and work of fracture (WF) were evaluated by three-point bending test after 24h storage.

RESULTS

The tensile properties of the PAN nanofibers indicated an anisotropic behavior being always higher when tested in a direction perpendicular to the rotation of the collector drum. Except for WF, the other flexural properties (FS and FM) were always higher as the ratio of BisGMA to TEGDMA increased in the neat resin beams. The addition of different ratios of PAN fibers did not affect FS and FM of the composite beams as compared to neat resin beams (p>0.05). However, the addition of fibers significantly increased the WF of the composite beams, and this was more evident for the blends with higher TEGDMA ratios (p<0.05).

SIGNIFICANCE

The inclusion of PAN nanofibers into resin blends did not negatively affect the properties of the composite and resulted in an increase in toughness that is a desirable property for a candidate material for prosthodontics application.

Reduced diaphyseal strength associated with high intracortical vascular porosity within long bones of children with osteogenesis imperfecta

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder resulting in bone fragility. The mechanisms behind this fragility are not well understood. In addition to characteristic bone mass deficiencies, research suggests that bone material properties are compromised in individuals with this disorder. However, little data exists regarding bone properties beyond the microstructural scale in individuals with this disorder. Specimens were obtained from long bone diaphyses of nine children with osteogenesis imperfecta during routine osteotomy procedures. Small rectangular beams, oriented longitudinally and transversely to the diaphyseal axis, were machined from these specimens and elastic modulus, yield strength, and maximum strength were measured in three-point bending. Intracortical vascular porosity, bone volume fraction, osteocyte lacuna density, and volumetric tissue mineral density were determined by synchrotron micro-computed tomography, and relationships among these mechanical properties and structural parameters were explored. Modulus and strength were on average 64-68% lower in the transverse vs. longitudinal beams (P<0.001, linear mixed model). Vascular porosity ranged between 3 and 42% of total bone volume. Longitudinal properties were associated negatively with porosity (P≤0.006, linear regressions). Mechanical properties, however, were not associated with osteocyte lacuna density or volumetric tissue mineral density (P≥0.167). Bone properties and structural parameters were not associated significantly with donor age (P≥0.225, linear mixed models). This study presents novel data regarding bone material strength in children with osteogenesis imperfecta. Results confirm that these properties are anisotropic. Elevated vascular porosity was observed in most specimens, and this parameter was associated with reduced bone material strength. These results offer insight toward understanding bone fragility and the role of intracortical porosity on the strength of bone tissue in children with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Reinforcement of denture base resin with short vegetable fiber

OBJECTIVES

Short ramie fibers were selected to investigate the effect of fiber length and volume fraction on the flexural properties of ramie fiber reinforced denture base PMMA. With the aid of measured interfacial shear strength and theoretical prediction values, experimental results were well interpreted.

METHODS

Interfacial properties between denture base PMMA and ramie fibers were evaluated by single fiber pull-out test. Then, chopped ramie fibers were pre-stirred with PMMA powder by a mechanical blender and then mixed with MMA liquid to fabricate composites. Two crucial influencing factors, fiber volume fraction and fiber length, were studied to clarify their effects on flexural properties of composites.

RESULTS

With 1.5mm fibers addition, flexural modulus of denture base PMMA rose from 2.50 to 3.46 GPa with 10 vol.% fibers, while flexural strength declined steadily with increment of fiber content. If fiber length was 3.0mm, the modulus showed a growth to 3.5 GPa at 4 vol.% fiber content followed by a drop to 3.00 GPa at 10 vol.%, whereas fluctuation in strength was experienced. Experimental results were discussed by comparison with two theoretical models.

SIGNIFICANCE

Short ramie fiber reinforced denture base PMMA had higher flexural modulus than neat resin, while strength was lowered due to the weak interfacial adhesion. The potential of vegetable fibers as reinforcing agents for denture base should be further investigated by strengthening the interface between cellulose and denture base PMMA.
