Single and ternary competitive adsorption-desorption and degradation of amphenicol antibiotics in three agricultural soils

The widespread usage of veterinary antibiotics results in antibiotic contamination and increases environmental risks. This study was evaluated the single and ternary competitive adsorption-desorption and degradation of three amphenicol antibiotics (AMs): chloramphenicol (CAP), thiamphenicol (TAP), and florfenicol (FF) in three agricultural soils. The adsorption capacity of amphenicol antibiotics in the soil was weak, and the K_f value was in the range of 0.15-3.59 μg^1-1/nL^1/n kg^-1. In the single adsorption-desorption experiment, the ranked order of adsorption capacity was TAP > FF > CAP. However, in the ternary competitive adsorption experiment, the order was changed to be CAP > FF > TAP. The degradation of AMs in soils was performed at various conditions. All AMs were vulnerable to microbial degradation in soils. A higher initial concentration would reduce the degradation rate and enhance the persistence of AMs in soil. The degradation of AMs was positively influenced by changes in soil moisture content and culture temperatures up to 30 °C and decreased at higher temperatures. An equation was used to predict the leachability of AMs in soils and assess their risk to the water environment. The weak adsorption capacity and poor persistence of FF indicated that it may have a strong effect on groundwater based on the equation. It is imperative to further assess the biological impacts of FF at environmentally relevant concentrations given its mobility and extensive use in the livestock industry.

Sorption behaviors of antimicrobial and antiparasitic veterinary drugs on subtropical soils

Brazil is one of the world's largest producers of animal protein, requiring the large-scale use of veterinary drugs. The administration of antimicrobials and antiparasitics is a common practice. However, there is a lack of information on how these drugs impact the environment. Antimicrobials are capable of altering the soil microbial population and are responsible for the development of multidrug-resistant microbial strains. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the fate and transport of these compounds in the environment, and one parameter used for this purpose is the soil-water partition coefficient. In this work, an assessment was made of the soil sorption behaviors of 18 drugs from seven different families, including antimicrobials (sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, amphenicols, and macrolides) and antiparasitic drugs (milbemycin, avermectins, and benzimidazoles). Seven subtropical soils of different textural classes were tested. The Freundlich sorption coefficients, expressed as μg^1-1/n (cm³)^1/n g^-1, were in the following ranges: 0.45 to 19 (sulfonamides), 72 to 2410 (fluoroquinolones), 9 to 58 (thiabendazole), 0.03 to 0.48 (florfenicol), 105 to 424 (moxidectin), 14 to 184 (avermectins), and 1.5 to 74 (macrolides). The results showed that the drugs belonging to the same family, with chemical structures in common, presented similar behaviors regarding sorption and desorption, for the different soils tested and are generally in agreement with soils from temperate regions. The data set obtained in this work give an overview of the fate of the veterinary drugs in Brazilian subtropical soils with different textures and composition and can be very helpful for exposure risk assessments.

Abamectin in soils: Analytical methods, kinetics, sorption and dissipation

Abamectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent that has been widely employed in veterinary medicine and has also been used as a pesticide in agriculture. Veterinary drugs may reach the soil and may be transported to surface and ground waters, posing risks to terrestrial and aquatic organisms. Sorption, transformation and transport processes are primarily responsible for the fate of these substances in the environment. In this study, the sorption and the aerobic dissipation of abamectin in Brazilian soils (sand, clay and sandy-clay) were evaluated. For sorption studies, batch equilibrium experiments were performed. Sorption and desorption isotherms were fitted to the Freundlich model. Abamectin showed a high affinity to soil particles, with Freundlich sorption and desorption coefficients ranging from 44 to 138 μg(1-1/n) (cm(3))(1/n) g(-1) and from 89 to 236 μg(1-1/n) (cm(3))(1/n) g(-1), respectively. Dissipation of abamectin was evaluated in sterile and non-sterile soils in an aerobic and dark environment under controlled temperature and humidity. The time required for a 50% reduction of the amount of abamectin present in non-sterile soils was up to 4 days, and the time period for 90% dissipation was up to 12 days. In sterilized soils, there was no reduction in the concentration of abamectin over 37 days of exposure, suggesting that aerobic microbial degradation must have been the primary mechanism responsible for the dissipation of abamectin in soils.
