Occurrence of N-nitrosamines in the atmosphere and human health risk: A case study in an urban area of Chuncheon, Gangwon State, South Korea

This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of eight nitrosamines (NAs) in particulate (PM2.5) and gaseous phases and assess the human health risk associated with these compounds in an urban area of Chuncheon, Gangwon State, South Korea, across four sampling seasons. The findings revealed that the total concentrations of eight NAs measured during the sampling period exceeded the public health recommendation of 0.3 ng/m3 provided by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, indicating a potential human health risk from NA exposures. In particular, the average total NA concentration observed in the gaseous samples during the winter of 2021 was 18.1 ± 6.46 ng/m3. The primary emission sources could potentially impact the concentrations of NAs in the atmosphere due to their significant positive correlation with primary emission species such as NO2, CO, and SO2. Moreover, the levels of particulate NAs during the summer were negatively correlated with O3, suggesting that their formation might be influenced by ozonation in the aqueous aerosol phase. In addition, the total NA concentrations measured in the gaseous phase were four to six times higher than those measured in the PM2.5 phase throughout the sampling period. Thus, domestic sources have the potential to impact the pollution levels of the research area more significantly than long-range atmospheric transport. In particular, the highest concentrations of NAs in the gas phase were observed during the winter, while the lowest concentrations were recorded in the summer, possibly influenced by photolysis. Nevertheless, the study suggested that tertiary amines might contribute to the presence of gaseous NAs in sunlight. Consequently, further studies focusing on the occurrence of tertiary amines in the gas phase should be considered. The cumulative lifetime cancer risks estimated from inhalation exposure exceeded the acceptable risk level of 10⁻6 for all age groups across all four seasons. Therefore, it is crucial to implement effective control measures to mitigate potential health risks associated with exposure to NAs.

Unraveling the distribution characteristic of cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes in various environmental media of a wastewater treatment plant

Cyclic volatile methylsiloxane (cVMS) is extensively used in consumer products and frequently detected in various environmental media, including water and air. In this study, we developed reliable and convenient methods to sample three cVMS compounds: octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) in water and air samples collected from different tanks within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The concentrations of D4, D5, and D6 in the water samples ranged from 0.40 to 8.0 μg L-1, 0.35 to 91 μg L-1, and 0.54 to 17 μg L-1, respectively. In the air samples, these concentrations varied from 0.34 to 20 μg m-3, 0.34 to 128 μg m-3, and 0.08 to 12 μg m-3, respectively. It is worth noting that the air-water distribution coefficient (Kaw) for these three cVMS exhibited a strong correlation with their water solubility. Moreover, fugacity fractions indicated a net evaporation process from water to the atmosphere. Furthermore, we investigated the distribution of cVMS between the gaseous and particulate phases. The results revealed a significant fraction, exceeding 72 %, of cVMS resided in the gas phase. D4 and D5 predominate in the gaseous phase, while D5 and D6 are the principal constituents within the particulate phase. The distribution coefficient characterizing the partitioning of cVMS compounds between the gaseous and particulate (Kp) exhibited a strong correlation with their corresponding octanol-air partitioning coefficients (Koa). These findings contribute to a better understanding of the distribution of cVMS in diverse environmental media and the underlying mechanism governing their dispersion.

Hydrogen sulphide control in sewers by catalysing the reaction with oxygen

This work for the first time shows possible advantage of using ferrous as a catalyst to selectively oxidise hydrogen sulphide in sewer water where biological activity is present. Ferrous catalysed the oxidation reaction in all conditions, but the oxygen requirement for the chemical oxidation of sulphide varied depending on the initial conditions (pH, concentrations of sulphide and oxygen). For initial concentrations of O₂ and S^2- exceeding 2 mg/L, and a pH between 7.3 and 8.3, approximately 1 mg-O₂ was required to oxidise 1 mg-S^2-. For the typical conditions experienced in a sewer (pH < 8.0 and O₂ and S^2- < 2.0 mg/L), approximately 2.0 mg-O₂ is required to oxidise 1 mg-S^2-. The most efficient O₂ usage of 0.25-0.5 mg-O₂ was observed with initial O₂ and S^2- concentrations below 2.0 mg/L and a pH >8.1. The developed mathematical model described the experimental results over a wide range using only three coefficients. The catalytic effect of ferrous selectively increased the oxidation rate of S^2- in sewer water samples in which biochemical oxygen utilisation competes for oxygen. Further trials are needed to optimise the method for application in sewer systems where biofilm is present and varying conditions (temperature, H₂S concentration, oxygen consumption rate) exist.

Distribution and regeneration of hydroxyl free radicals in gaseous and particulate phases of pollutants in near-ground ambient air

Hydroxyl free radicals play the main role in atmospheric oxidative capacity. The formation of secondary fine particulate matter and the degradation of gaseous pollutants in the troposphere are dominated by hydroxyl free radical reactions. The harmful effect of particulate matters to human health is closely related to the free radicals distributed in the particulate matter phase. In this paper, the distribution of hydroxyl free radicals in near-ground ambient air was studied. The hydroxyl free radicals exist not only in the gaseous phase but also in the particulate phase, especially during heavy haze pollution. It is noteworthy that the concentration of hydroxyl free radicals in the particulate phase is about two times higher than that in the gaseous phase. The possible regeneration mechanisms are proposed. The excited electrons (e^-) and holes (h⁺) formed e^- - h⁺ pairs in particulate matters are identified to play a key role in promoting the regeneration of hydroxyl free radicals in particulate phase. Environmentally persistent free radicals in particulate phase could also further promote the chain reaction of free radicals and ultimately result in explosive regeneration in an environment that has been excited. The correlation between radical concentrations in gas species, particulate phases and particulate number concentration has been summary based on the actual monitoring site including Thermal power plant, Yumen street and Chemical street sites.

Aromatherapy: composition of the gaseous phase at equilibrium with liquid bergamot essential oil

This work compares the composition at different temperatures of gaseous phase of bergamot essential oil at equilibrium with the liquid phase. A new GC–MS methodology to determine quantitatively the volatile aroma compounds was developed. The adopted methodology involved the direct injection of headspace gas into injection port of GC–MS system and of known amounts of the corresponding authentic volatile compounds. The methodology was validated. This study showed that gaseous phase composition is different from that of the liquid phase at equilibrium with it.

First characterization of the endocrine-disrupting potential of indoor gaseous and particulate contamination: comparison with urban outdoor air (France)

The composition of endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) in the ambient air of indoor environments has already been described, but little is known about the inherent endocrine-disrupting potential of indoor air contamination. We therefore aimed to study the distribution of bioactive EDCs in the gaseous and particulate phases of indoor air using a cellular bioassay approach that integrates the interaction effects between chemicals. Organic air extracts, both gaseous and particulate, were taken from three indoor locations (office, apartment, and children's day care) in France and sampled in two different seasons in order to study their interference with the signaling of estrogen, androgen, and thyroid receptors. The experiments were also conducted on aerial extracts from an outdoor site (urban center). We found that gaseous and/or particulate extracts from all locations displayed estrogenicity, anti-androgenicity, and thyroidicity. Overall, indoor air extracts had a higher endocrine-disrupting potential compared to outdoor ones, especially during winter and in the day care. The biological activities were predominant for the gaseous extracts and tended to increase for the particulate extracts in cool conditions. In conclusion, our data confirmed the presence of bioactive EDCs in a gaseous state and highlighted their indoor origin and concentration, especially in the cold season.

Endocrine disrupting compounds in gaseous and particulate outdoor air phases according to environmental factors

This study investigated, for the first time in France, the spatial and temporal patterns of 55 endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in ambient air at three sites (urban, suburban and forest) under two climatic periods (warm/cold) for 2 successive years. All EDCs, except tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), were encountered with various frequencies of up to 100%. Phthalate diesters (PAEs) were the most abundant chemicals with total concentrations as the sum of compounds, ranging from 10 to 100 ng m(-3) of total air, followed by alkylphenols (APs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which were both approximately 1 ng m(-3). Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) and bisphenol A (BPA) concentrations were notably lower (approximately 0.1 ng m(-3)). Air concentrations, depending on the considered compounds, were from 1.2 to 2 times higher in the urban than the suburban area and from 2 to 5 times higher in the urban than the forest site. PAH emissions were higher in the cold period, due to combustion processes. This finding is contrary to the other EDCs that are more abundant in the summer and governed by volatilisation. Most of the EDCs were largely distributed in the gaseous phase (>80% in the summer). The octanol/air partition coefficient (KOA) and vapour pressure (Vp) were relevant parameters for predicting EDC partitioning and direct relationships (p < 0.001) were observed i) between log K particle/gas partitioning (log Kp) and log KOA and ii) between EDC ratios in the gaseous phase and log vapour pressure (log Vp).
