Emergence of π-Magnetism in Fused Aza-Triangulenes: Symmetry and Charge Transfer Effects

On-surface synthesis has paved the way toward the fabrication and characterization of conjugated carbon-based molecular materials that exhibit π-magnetism such as triangulenes. Aza-triangulene, a nitrogen-substituted derivative, was recently shown to display rich on-surface chemistry, offering an ideal platform to investigate structure-property relations regarding spin-selective charge transfer and magnetic fingerprints. Herein, we study electronic changes upon fusion of single molecules into larger dimeric derivatives. We show that the closed-shell structure of aza-triangulene on Ag(111) leads to closed-shell dimers covalently coupled through sterically accessible carbon atoms. Meanwhile, its open-shell structure on Au(111) leads to coupling via atoms displaying a high spin density, resulting in symmetric or asymmetric products. Interestingly, whereas all dimers on Au(111) exhibit similar charge transfer properties, only asymmetric ones show magnetic fingerprints due to spin-selective charge transfer. These results expose clear relationships among molecular symmetry, charge transfer, and spin states of π-conjugated carbon-based nanostructures.

Interplay between Magnetoresistance and Kondo Resonance in Radical Single-Molecule Junctions

We report transport measurements on tunable single-molecule junctions of the organic perchlorotrityl radical molecule, contacted with gold electrodes at low temperature. The current-voltage characteristics of a subset of junctions shows zero-bias anomalies due to the Kondo effect and in addition elevated magnetoresistance (MR). Junctions without Kondo resonance reveal a much stronger MR. Furthermore, we show that the amplitude of the MR can be tuned by mechanically stretching the junction. On the basis of these findings, we attribute the high MR to an interference effect involving spin-dependent scattering at the metal-molecule interface and assign the Kondo effect to the unpaired spin located in the center of the molecule in asymmetric junctions.

Manipulation of Spin Polarization in Boron-Substituted Graphene Nanoribbons

The design of magnetic topological states due to spin polarization in an extended π carbon system has great potential in spintronics application. Although magnetic zigzag edges in graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have been investigated earlier, real-space observation and manipulation of spin polarization in a heteroatom substituted system remains challenging. Here, we investigate a zero-bias peak at a boron site embedded at the center of an armchair-type GNR on a AuSi_X/Au(111) surface with a combination of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. After the tip-induced removal of a Si atom connected to two adjacent boron atoms, a clear Kondo resonance peak appeared and was further split by an applied magnetic field of 12 T. This magnetic state can be relayed along the longitudinal axis of the GNR by sequential removal of Si atoms.

Doublet-Singlet-Doublet Transition in a Single Organic Molecule Magnet On-Surface Constructed with up to 3 Aluminum Atoms

Starting from a long aza-starphene neutral and nonmagnetic organic molecule, a single-molecule magnet is on-surface constructed using up to 3 light nonmagnetic aluminum (Al) atoms. Seldom observed in solution with transition-metal atoms and going from 1 to 3 Al coordinated atoms, the doublet-singlet-doublet transition is easily on-surface accessible using the scanning tunneling microscope single-atom and single-molecule manipulations on a gold(111) surface. With 3 coordinated Al atoms, the lateral vibration modes of the Al3-aza-starphene molecule magnet are largely frozen. Using the Kondo states, this opens the observation of the in-phase Al vertical atom vibrations and out-of-phase central phenyl vibrations.

Correlation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States and Kondo Resonances in Artificial Spin Arrays on an s-Wave Superconductor

Mutually interacting magnetic atoms coupled to a superconductor have gained enormous interest due to their potential for the realization of topological superconductivity. Individual magnetic impurities produce states within the superconducting energy gap known as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. Here, using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope, we artificially craft spin arrays consisting of an Fe adatom interacting with an assembly of interstitial Fe atoms (IFA) on a superconducting oxygen-reconstructed Ta(100) surface and show that the magnetic interaction between the adatom and the IFA assembly can be tuned by adjusting the number of IFAs in the assembly. The YSR state experiences a characteristic crossover in its energetic position and particle-hole spectral weight asymmetry when the Kondo resonance shows spectral depletion around the Fermi energy. By the help of slave-boson mean-field theory (SBMFT) and numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations we associate the crossover with the transition from decoupled Kondo singlets to an antiferromagnetic ground state of the Fe adatom spin and the IFA assembly effective spin.

On-Surface Atom-by-Atom-Assembled Aluminum Binuclear Tetrabenzophenazine Organometallic Magnetic Complex

The Kondo effect results from the interactions of the conduction electrons in a metal bulk with localized magnetic impurities. While adsorbed atop a metallic surface, the on-surface nanoscale version of this effect is observed when a single magnetic atom or a single magnetic molecule (SMM) is interacting with the conduction electrons. SMMs are commonly organometallic complexes incorporating transition-metal atoms in different oxidation states. We demonstrate how a single nonmagnetic neutral tetrabenzo[a,c,j,h]phenazine molecule can be on-surface-coordinated with exactly two aluminum metal atoms (between Al(I) and Al(II) oxidation state on the Au(111) surface) by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM) single-atom manipulation. It results in a Kondo measurable localized molecular magnetic moment. This opens a new way to design SMM complexes without the need for heavy transition-metal atoms and complex ligands to stabilize the molecular coordination sphere.

The Environment-Dependent Behavior of the Blatter Radical at the Metal-Molecule Interface

Stable organic radicals have potential applications for building organic spintronic devices. To fulfill this potential, the interface between organic radicals and metal electrodes must be well characterized. Here, through a combined effort that includes synthesis, scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, and single-molecule conductance measurements, we comprehensively probe the electronic interaction between gold metal electrodes and a benchtop stable radical-the Blatter radical. We find that despite its open-shell character and having a half-filled orbital close to the Fermi level, the radical is stable on a gold substrate under ultrahigh vacuum. We observe a Kondo resonance arising from the radical and spectroscopic signatures of its half-filled orbitals. By contrast, in solution-based single-molecule conductance measurements, the radical character is lost through oxidation with charge transfer occurring from the molecule to metal. Our experiments show that the stability of radical states can be very sensitive to the environment around the molecule.

Evidence for Ultralow-Energy Vibrations in Large Organic Molecules

The quantum efficiency or the rate of conversion of incident photon to free electron in photosynthesis is known to be extremely high. It has long been thought that the origin of this efficiency are molecular vibrations leading to a very fast separation of electrons and holes within the involved molecules. However, molecular vibrations are commonly in the range above 100 meV, which is too high for excitations in an ambient environment. Here, we analyze experimental spectra of single organic molecules on metal surfaces at ∼4 K, which often exhibit a pronounced dip. We show that measurements on iron(II) [tetra-(pentafluorophenyl)]porphyrin resolve this single dip at 4 K into a series of step-shaped inelastic excitations at 0.4 K. Via extensive spectral maps under applied magnetic fields and corresponding theoretical analysis we find that the dip is due to ultralow-energy vibrations of the molecular frame, typically in the range below 20 meV. The result indicates that ultralow energy vibrations in organic molecules are much more common than currently thought and may be all-pervasive for molecules above a certain size.
