Metrologically sound comparison of trace-metal levels in sea cucumber tissues from different species and habitats

Sea cucumbers are indicators of metal contamination in sea bottoms due to their low mobility and feeding behaviour. Comparing contaminations of specimens from different locations, habitats, and/or organs allows understanding of contamination processes and differences. However, the interpretation of these data is affected by the variability of contamination levels in specimens, the uncertainty of tissue analyses, and the complex correlation of mass fractions estimated by using the same calibration of the used instrumental method of analysis. This work presents a novel tool for the sound comparison of contamination levels of biota where all mentioned factors are considered to produce reliable and undisputable information on the studied system. The Monte Carlo simulation of uncertainty components, affecting the determination of mean contamination levels observed in selected types of tissues, allowed simulating mean contamination differences and determining if these are meaningful. This tool was used to assess the levels of Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb of animals collected in different locations of Sesimbra-Portugal. It was concluded that specimens that selectively consume macroalgae have larger contamination levels than animals feeding on sediment. The gut is the most contaminated organ suggesting intake from feeding is dominant. Three of the analysed animals have Pb mass fractions larger than a maximum admissible value for human consumption of 3 mg kg^-1 with a probability larger than 2.5%.

Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and ecological risk assessment of elements (PTEs, REEs, and ENs) in the surface soil of shiraz city (Iran) under different land-use types

In this study, 100 samples were collected from the topsoil of different land-use types (urban, industrial and agricultural) in Shiraz. The content of 26 elements was analyzed. CF, EF, Igeo, NPI, and PLI indices were used to evaluate soil pollution. Ecological risk assessment of metals was calculated by using Er and RI indexes. PCA analysis and the PMF model were used to determine the source of metals in soil. Also, the spatial distribution of metals and risk index were plotted using inverse distance weighting (IDW) with ArcGIS software (10.3). The metal concentrations in the soil ranged from 0.2067 ± 0.0946 (Ag) to 85,673.50 ± 4689.27 (Ca) mg kg^-1. The results show that all elements' Concentration in soils was lower than the DOE level. The mean concentration of All rare earth elements (REEs) was lower than WSA and ECM values. Hotspot points pollution of some metals such as Pb, Cd, and Ni are located in high-traffic parts of the urban area. Otherwise, hot spot points of As pollution are located in industrial sample points. Results of indexes show that Sb in urban and agricultural soils have highe mean values of CF (6.75 and 6.85) and Iegeo (2.17 and 2.13), respectively. In industrial soils, S has highe mean values of CF (14.95), EF (100.26), and Igeo (2.95). The PLI index shows that REEs (PLI <1) have no pollution, but PTEs and ENs have pollution (PLI >1). The mean Er, value shows that Sb (127.33) and Cd (104) have significant risk among metals. PCA and PMF models show that The main sources of elements in shiraz soil are vehicularly emitted, fertilizer use, sewage irrigation, atmospheric deposition, and parent material. Generally, results show that Most of the study area has considerable risk, especially concerning PTEs. So, it is recommended to pay more attention to the issue of traffic in the urban environment in to improve the state of the urban area.

Effects of ocean acidification on acid-base physiology, skeleton properties, and metal contamination in two echinoderms from vent sites in Deception Island, Antarctica

Antarctic surface waters are expected to be the first to experience severe ocean acidification (OA) with carbonate undersaturation and large decreases in pH forecasted before the end of this century. Due to the long stability in environmental conditions and the relatively low daily and seasonal variations to which they are exposed, Antarctic marine organisms, especially those with a supposedly poor machinery to eliminate CO₂ and protons and with a heavily calcified skeleton like echinoderms, are hypothesized as highly vulnerable to these environmental shifts. The opportunities offered by the natural pH gradient generated by vent activities in Deception Island caldera, Western Antarctic Peninsula, were used to investigate for the first time the acid-base physiologies, the impact of OA on the skeleton and the impact of pH on metal accumulation in the Antarctic sea star Odontaster validus and sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri. The two species were sampled in four stations within the caldera, two at pH (total scale) 8.0-8.1 and two at reduced pH 7.8. Measured variables were pH, alkalinity, and dissolved inorganic carbon of the coelomic fluid; characteristic fracture force, stress and Young's modulus using Weibull statistics and Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn concentrations in the integument, gonads and digestive system. Recorded acid-base characteristics of both studied species fit in the general picture deduced from temperate and tropical sea stars and sea urchins but conditions and possibly confounding factors, principally food availability and quality, in the studied stations prevented definitive conclusions. Reduced seawater pH 7.8 and metals had almost no impact on the skeleton mechanical properties of the two investigated species despite very high Cd concentrations in O. validus integument. Reduced pH was correlated to increased contamination by most metals but this relation was weak. Translocation and caging experiments taking into account food parameters are proposed to better understand future processes linked to ocean acidification and metal contamination in Antarctic echinoderms.

Edaphic factors determining the colonization of semiarid mine tailings by a ruderal shrub and two tree plant species: Implications for phytomanagement

Phytomanagement has been considered a feasible technique to decrease the environmental risks associated to mine tailings and its implementation relies on a suitable plant species selection. The goal of this study was to identify the edaphic factors, including microbiology, affecting the establishment of plant species with contrasting growth patterns during the phytomanagement of mine tailings. For this purpose, a comprehensive rhizosphere characterization was performed in an early ruderal colonizer, Zygophyllum fabago and two late successional tree species, Pinus halepensis and Tetraclinis articulata, growing at a mine tailings pile in southeast Spain. The neutral pH of the tailings determined low 0.01 M CaCl₂ metal extractable concentrations (e.g. <10 μg kg^-1 Pb and Cd). Thus, other soil properties different from metal concentrations resulted more determining to explain plant establishment. Results revealed that Z. fabago selectively colonized tailings patches characterized by high salinity (3.5 dS m^-1) and high silt percentages (42%), showing a specific halotolerant rhizospheric microbial composition, such as the bacterial Sphingomonadales and Cytophagales orders and the fungal Pleosporales and Hyprocreales orders. The two tree species grew at moderate salinity areas of the tailings pile (1.7 dS m^-1) with high sand percentages (85%), where Actinomycetales was the most abundant bacterial order (>10% abundance). The contrasting mycorrhizal behaviour of both tree species (ectomycorrhizal for P. halepensis and endomycorrhizal for T. articulata) could explain the differences found between their fungal rhizospheric composition. In terms of phytomanagement, the selective plant species colonization following specific soil patches at mine tailings would increase their biodiversity and resilience against environmental stressors.

The Suspended Sediment and Metals Load from the Mariana's Tailing Dam Failure to the Coastal Sea

We present an assessment on the sediment flux caused by the tailing dam failure at Mariana, Minas Gerais Estate, Brazil. Field data of water level, water flow, and suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) were obtained during the period from 21 November to 5 December 2015, when the muddy waters reached the coast. A rating curve of the coastal tidal signal was built, allowing a robust estimate of the flow at the mouth of the Doce River. Together with SSC data, early sediment delivered to the coastal sea was of 15 × 104 t, what may account for only 0.5% of the total material remobilized at the accident site. This accounted for >25 000 t of Fe and between 1 and 4 t of other trace metals, such as Co, Ni, and Zn. Integr Environ Assess Manag 2020;16:661-668. © 2020 SETAC.

Toxicological effects of cadmium and lead on two freshwater diatoms

In recent years, there have been significant advances in the knowledge and understanding of the pollution attributed to effects of aquatic toxic metals on fresh water benthic diatoms. In this study, the cell growth, chlorophyll a content and superoxide dismutase activity in Halamphora veneta (Kützing) Levkov and Surirella crumena Brébisson exposed to cadmium and lead, were investigated. Furthermore, in order to explore the potential function of H. veneta on environmental monitoring and environmental remediation, expression of two genes (psbA, psaB) and morphological analysis of H. veneta were carried out. The cells growth of H. veneta and S. crumena were generally inhibited with cadmium and lead exposure during 96 h, while cells density of H. veneta was significantly increased under the low concentration at 24 h cadmium exposure. Our results indicated that H. veneta had a certain tolerance to toxic metals at initial treated time. In addition, the significantly changes of chlorophyll a content and SOD activities in H. veneta and S. crumena indicated that both photosynthetic system and the antioxidant system in benthic diatom might play important roles on the toxic metals tolerant mechanism. Meanwhile, it can be confirmed that the diatom photosynthetic systems play roles on toxic metals resistance inferred from the gene expression of psbA and psaB in H. veneta. Finally, the results of scanning electron microscopy showed that there was a slightly deformation on cells following the cadmium exposure in H. veneta, while obvious deformation with cell greatly widened after lead exposure. The present work will be helpful to understand the effect mechanisms of toxic metal by comparing two kinds of diatom on cell inhibition, biological response and morphological changes, which will provide more information for possible use of benthic diatoms in bioremediation.

Challenges and opportunities in the phytoremediation of heavy metals contaminated soils: A review

Mining operations, industrial production and domestic and agricultural use of metal and metal containing compound have resulted in the release of toxic metals into the environment. Metal pollution has serious implications for the human health and the environment. Few heavy metals are toxic and lethal in trace concentrations and can be teratogenic, mutagenic, endocrine disruptors while others can cause behavioral and neurological disorders among infants and children. Therefore, remediation of heavy metals contaminated soil could be the only effective option to reduce the negative effects on ecosystem health. Thus, keeping in view the above facts, an attempt has been made in this article to review the current status, challenges and opportunities in the phytoremediation for remediating heavy metals from contaminated soils. The prime focus is given to phytoextraction and phytostabilization as the most promising and alternative methods for soil reclamation.

Metal and metalloid concentrations in the tissues of dusky Carcharhinus obscurus, sandbar C. plumbeus and white Carcharodon carcharias sharks from south-eastern Australian waters, and the implications for human consumption

Shark fisheries have expanded due to increased demand for shark products. As long-lived apex predators, sharks are susceptible to bioaccumulation of metals and metalloids, and biomagnification of some such as Hg, primarily through diet. This may have negative health implications for human consumers. Concentrations of Hg, As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Se and Zn were analysed in muscle, liver and fin fibres (ceratotrichia) from dusky Carcharhinus obscurus, sandbar Carcharhinus plumbeus, and white Carcharodon carcharias sharks from south-eastern Australian waters. Concentrations of analytes were generally higher in liver than in muscle and lowest in fin fibres. Muscle tissue concentrations of Hg were significantly correlated with total length, and >50% of sampled individuals had concentrations above Food Standards Australia New Zealand's maximum limit (1 mg kg(-1) ww). Arsenic concentrations were also of concern, particularly in fins. Results warrant further investigation to accurately assess health risks for regular consumption of shark products.

Radionuclides and heavy metal concentrations as complementary tools for studying the impact of industrialization on the environment

The aim of the study was to determine whether using chemical and radiochemical analysis of lake sediments can highlight changes in the climate. Also it was studied whether human impact on the environment can be observed and to what extent such changes are in agreement with historical data. Samples of 16 cm thick sediment cores from the Smreczynski Staw Lake were collected and divided into 1 cm thick sub-samples. The samples were air dried and homogenized. The quantitative analysis of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Cd, and Pb in the digested sediment samples was made by using atomic absorption spectrometry. Simultaneously, the radioactivity of ¹³⁷Cs using gamma spectrometry and ²¹⁰Pb_uns using alpha spectrometry, were measured for sediment layer dating. Results showed that iron concentration was in the range 0.3–over 1 % (w/w), and zinc 0.01–0.05 % (w/w). Lesser concentrations were found for copper 18.37–43.6 ppm, manganese 37.5–50.7 ppm, lead 146.1–432 ppm, chromium 12.3–37.4 ppm, nickel 3.1–10.8 ppm and cadmium 0.9–34.6 ppm. Changes in ¹³⁷Cs radioactivity was in the range of 89 ± 11 to 865 ± 62 (Bq kg⁻¹). Sediments composition can accurately reflect (in terms of time and to what extent) air pollution and natural geo-chemical processes in the environment. However, the choice of the analysed object is crucial in this respect. The Smreczynski Staw Lake, due to its location in the mountains and hydrological situation, proved to be very useful for providing undisturbed analytical samples.
