A short- and medium-term forecasting model for roof PV systems with data pre-processing

This study worked with Chunghwa Telecom to collect data from 17 rooftop solar photovoltaic plants installed on top of office buildings, warehouses, and computer rooms in northern, central and southern Taiwan from January 2021 to June 2023. A data pre-processing method combining linear regression and K Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) was proposed to estimate missing values for weather and power generation data. Outliers were processed using historical data and parameters highly correlated with power generation volumes were used to train an artificial intelligence (AI) model. To verify the reliability of this data pre-processing method, this study developed multilayer perceptron (MLP) and long short-term memory (LSTM) models to make short-term and medium-term power generation forecasts for the 17 solar photovoltaic plants. Study results showed that the proposed data pre-processing method reduced normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) for short- and medium-term forecasts in the MLP model by 17.47% and 11.06%, respectively, and also reduced the nRMSE for short- and medium-term forecasts in the LSTM model by 20.20% and 8.03%, respectively.

A Nonlinear Functional Link Multilayer Perceptron Using Volterra Series as an Adaptive Noise Canceler for the Extraction of Fetal Electrocardiogram

Uninterrupted monitoring of fetal cardiac health is essential for the timely diagnosis of congenital diseases. The maternal Electrocardiogram (mECG), which has the most significant impact, always tampers with the signals collected from the pregnant woman's abdomen. So, an efficient nonlinear filtering network based on artificial neural network (ANN) is required to eliminate the maternal part from the abdominal Electrocardiogram (aECG) that is traveled from the thoracic of the mother to the abdomen following nonlinear dynamics. In this work, we have presented an adaptive noise canceler (ANC) using 3-layer perceptron architecture where the inputs are expanded by the functional link expansion using the second-order Volterra series, and the weights are updated using backpropagation. The adaptive filter approximates the nonlinear mapping between the thoracic Electrocardiogram (tECG) and the maternal component present in the aECG. Here the thoracic signal is the reference signal, and the abdominal signal is the desired signal to the adaptive filter. The proposed methodology uses the advantages of both multilayer perceptron (MLP) as well as functional link neural network (FLNN) in mapping the nonlinearity and effectively determining the fetal Electrocardiogram (fECG) from the aECG. For the detailed analysis, we have used the real Daisy database, the Non-invasive Fetal ECG database, and the fetal ECG synthetic database from Physionet. The results show that the nonlinear functional link MLP using the Volterra series gives a high-level performance compared to other classical adaptive filtering techniques, as all the evaluation metrics are above 90%.

Modelling hydrogen production from biomass pyrolysis for energy systems using machine learning techniques

In the context of Industry 4.0, hydrogen gas is becoming more significant to energy feedstocks in the world. The current work researches a novel artificial smart model for characterising hydrogen gas production (HGP) from biomass composition and the pyrolysis process based on an intriguing approach that uses support vector machines (SVMs) in conjunction with the artificial bee colony (ABC) optimiser. The main results are the significance of each physico-chemical parameter on the hydrogen gas production through innovative modelling and the foretelling of the HGP. Additionally, when this novel technique was employed on the observed dataset, a coefficient of determination and correlation coefficient equal to 0.9464 and 0.9751 were reached for the HGP estimate, respectively. The correspondence between observed data and the ABC/SVM-relied approximation showed the suitable effectiveness of this procedure.

A fractional gradient descent algorithm robust to the initial weights of multilayer perceptron

For multilayer perceptron (MLP), the initial weights will significantly influence its performance. Based on the enhanced fractional derivative extend from convex optimization, this paper proposes a fractional gradient descent (RFGD) algorithm robust to the initial weights of MLP. We analyze the effectiveness of the RFGD algorithm. The convergence of the RFGD algorithm is also analyzed. The computational complexity of the RFGD algorithm is generally larger than that of the gradient descent (GD) algorithm but smaller than that of the Adam, Padam, AdaBelief, and AdaDiff algorithms. Numerical experiments show that the RFGD algorithm has strong robustness to the order of fractional calculus which is the only added parameter compared to the GD algorithm. More importantly, compared to the GD, Adam, Padam, AdaBelief, and AdaDiff algorithms, the experimental results show that the RFGD algorithm has the best robust performance for the initial weights of MLP. Meanwhile, the correctness of the theoretical analysis is verified.

COVID-19 cough classification using machine learning and global smartphone recordings

We present a machine learning based COVID-19 cough classifier which can discriminate COVID-19 positive coughs from both COVID-19 negative and healthy coughs recorded on a smartphone. This type of screening is non-contact, easy to apply, and can reduce the workload in testing centres as well as limit transmission by recommending early self-isolation to those who have a cough suggestive of COVID-19. The datasets used in this study include subjects from all six continents and contain both forced and natural coughs, indicating that the approach is widely applicable. The publicly available Coswara dataset contains 92 COVID-19 positive and 1079 healthy subjects, while the second smaller dataset was collected mostly in South Africa and contains 18 COVID-19 positive and 26 COVID-19 negative subjects who have undergone a SARS-CoV laboratory test. Both datasets indicate that COVID-19 positive coughs are 15%–20% shorter than non-COVID coughs. Dataset skew was addressed by applying the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE). A leave-p-out cross-validation scheme was used to train and evaluate seven machine learning classifiers: logistic regression (LR), k-nearest neighbour (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), multilayer perceptron (MLP), convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM) and a residual-based neural network architecture (Resnet50). Our results show that although all classifiers were able to identify COVID-19 coughs, the best performance was exhibited by the Resnet50 classifier, which was best able to discriminate between the COVID-19 positive and the healthy coughs with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.98. An LSTM classifier was best able to discriminate between the COVID-19 positive and COVID-19 negative coughs, with an AUC of 0.94 after selecting the best 13 features from a sequential forward selection (SFS). Since this type of cough audio classification is cost-effective and easy to deploy, it is potentially a useful and viable means of non-contact COVID-19 screening.

Prediction modelling of COVID using machine learning methods from B-cell dataset

Coronavirus is a pandemic that has become a concern for the whole world. This disease has stepped out to its greatest extent and is expanding day by day. Coronavirus, termed as a worldwide disease, has caused more than 8 lakh deaths worldwide. The foremost cause of the spread of coronavirus is SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, which are part of the coronavirus family. Thus, predicting the patients suffering from such pandemic diseases would help to formulate the difference in inaccurate and infeasible time duration. This paper mainly focuses on the prediction of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 using the B-cells dataset. The paper also proposes different ensemble learning strategies that came out to be beneficial while making predictions. The predictions are made using various machine learning models. The numerous machine learning models, such as SVM, Naïve Bayes, K-nearest neighbors, AdaBoost, Gradient boosting, XGBoost, Random forest, ensembles, and neural networks are used in predicting and analyzing the dataset. The most accurate result was obtained using the proposed algorithm with 0.919 AUC score and 87.248% validation accuracy for predicting SARS-CoV and 0.923 AUC and 87.7934% validation accuracy for predicting SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Training Feedforward Neural Network Using Enhanced Black Hole Algorithm: A Case Study on COVID-19 Related ACE2 Gene Expression Classification

The aim of this paper is twofold. First, black hole algorithm (BHA) is proposed as a new training algorithm for feedforward neural networks (FNNs), since most traditional and metaheuristic algorithms for training FNNs suffer from the problem of slow coverage and getting stuck at local optima. BHA provides a reliable alternative to address these drawbacks. Second, complementary learning components and Levy flight random walk are introduced into BHA to result in a novel optimization algorithm (BHACRW) for the purpose of improving the FNNs’ accuracy by finding optimal weights and biases. Four benchmark functions are first used to evaluate BHACRW’s performance in numerical optimization problems. Later, the classification performance of the suggested models, using BHA and BHACRW for training FNN, is evaluated against seven various benchmark datasets: iris, wine, blood, liver disorders, seeds, Statlog (Heart), balance scale. Experimental result demonstrates that the BHACRW performs better in terms of mean square error (MSE) and accuracy of training FNN, compared to standard BHA and eight well-known metaheuristic algorithms: whale optimization algorithm (WOA), biogeography-based optimizer (BBO), gravitational search algorithm (GSA), genetic algorithm (GA), cuckoo search (CS), multiverse optimizer (MVO), symbiotic organisms search (SOS), and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Moreover, we examined the classification performance of the suggested approach on the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) gene expression as a coronavirus receptor, which has been overexpressed in human rhinovirus-infected nasal tissue. Results demonstrate that BHACRW-FNN achieves the highest accuracy on the dataset compared to other classifiers.

A machine learning forecasting model for COVID-19 pandemic in India

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an inflammation disease from a new virus. We have performed linear regression, Multilayer perceptron and Vector autoregression method for desire on the COVID-19 Kaggle data to anticipate the epidemiological example of the ailment and pace of COVID-2019 cases in India. Anticipated the potential patterns of COVID-19 effects in India dependent on data gathered from Kaggle. With the common data about confirmed, death and recovered cases across India for over the time length helps in anticipating and estimating the not so distant future. For extra assessment or future perspective, case definition and data combination must be kept up persistently.

Resting-state Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Presurgical Functional Mapping: Sensorimotor Localization

This article compares resting-state functional magnetic resonance (fMR) imaging with task fMR imaging for presurgical functional mapping of the sensorimotor (SM) region. Before tumor resection, 38 patients were scanned using both methods. The SM area was anatomically defined using 2 different software tools. Overlap of anatomic regions of interest with task activation maps and resting-state networks was measured in the SM region. A paired t-test showed higher overlap between resting-state maps and anatomic references compared with task activation when using a maximal overlap criterion. Resting state-derived maps are more comprehensive than those derived from task fMR imaging.

PM10 concentration forecasting in the metropolitan area of Oviedo (Northern Spain) using models based on SVM, MLP, VARMA and ARIMA: A case study

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is one of the pollutants that may have a significant impact on human health. Data collected over seven years in a city of the north of Spain is analyzed using four different mathematical models: vector autoregressive moving-average (VARMA), autoregressive integrated moving-average (ARIMA), multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks and support vector machines (SVMs) with regression. Measured monthly average pollutants and PM₁₀ (particles with a diameter less than 10μm) concentration are used as input to forecast the monthly averaged concentration of PM₁₀ from one to seven months ahead. Simulations showed that the SVM model performs better than the other models when forecasting one month ahead and also for the following seven months.

Tuberculosis diagnosis support analysis for precarious health information systems

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Pulmonary tuberculosis is a world emergency for the World Health Organization. Techniques and new diagnosis tools are important to battle this bacterial infection. There have been many advances in all those fields, but in developing countries such as Colombia, where the resources and infrastructure are limited, new fast and less expensive strategies are increasingly needed. Artificial neural networks are computational intelligence techniques that can be used in this kind of problems and offer additional support in the tuberculosis diagnosis process, providing a tool to medical staff to make decisions about management of subjects under suspicious of tuberculosis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A database extracted from 105 subjects with precarious information of people under suspect of pulmonary tuberculosis was used in this study. Data extracted from sex, age, diabetes, homeless, AIDS status and a variable with clinical knowledge from the medical personnel were used. Models based on artificial neural networks were used, exploring supervised learning to detect the disease. Unsupervised learning was used to create three risk groups based on available information.

RESULTS

Obtained results are comparable with traditional techniques for detection of tuberculosis, showing advantages such as fast and low implementation costs. Sensitivity of 97% and specificity of 71% where achieved.

CONCLUSIONS

Used techniques allowed to obtain valuable information that can be useful for physicians who treat the disease in decision making processes, especially under limited infrastructure and data.

Computational models for the classification of mPGES-1 inhibitors with fingerprint descriptors

Human microsomal prostaglandin [Formula: see text] synthase (mPGES)-1 is a promising drug target for inflammation and other diseases with inflammatory symptoms. In this work, we built classification models which were able to classify mPGES-1 inhibitors into two groups: highly active inhibitors and weakly active inhibitors. A dataset of 1910 mPGES-1 inhibitors was separated into a training set and a test set by two methods, by a Kohonen's self-organizing map or by random selection. The molecules were represented by different types of fingerprint descriptors including MACCS keys (MACCS), CDK fingerprints, Estate fingerprints, PubChem fingerprints, substructure fingerprints and 2D atom pairs fingerprint. First, we used a support vector machine (SVM) to build twelve models with six types of fingerprints and found that MACCS had some advantage over the other fingerprints in modeling. Next, we used naïve Bayes (NB), random forest (RF) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) methods to build six models with MACCS only and found that models using RF and MLP methods were better than NB. Finally, all the models with MACCS keys were used to make predictions on an external test set of 41 compounds. In summary, the models built with MACCS keys and using SVM, RF and MLP methods show good prediction performance on the test sets and the external test set. Furthermore, we made a structure-activity relationship analysis between mPGES-1 and its inhibitors based on the information gain of fingerprints and could pinpoint some key functional groups for mPGES-1 activity. It was found that highly active inhibitors usually contained an amide group, an aromatic ring or a nitrogen heterocyclic ring, and several heteroatoms substituents such as fluorine and chlorine. The carboxyl group and sulfur atom groups mainly appeared in weakly active inhibitors.
