Simultaneous adsorption of As(III), Cd(II) and Pb(II) by hybrid bio-nanocomposites of nano hydroxy ferric phosphate and hydroxy ferric sulfate particles coating on Aspergillus niger

To develop an efficient, convenient and cost-effective method to simultaneously remove pollution of As(III), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in wastewater, a strategy to fabricate hybrid bio-nanocomposites ((n-HFP + n-HFS)@An) of nano hydroxy ferric phosphate (n-HFP) and hydroxy ferric sulfate (n-HFS) particles coating on Aspergillus niger was applied. The scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrum analyses showed that (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An composites had been successfully developed which well solved the self-agglomeration problem of the nano particles. Comparing to the bulk nanoparticles, the adsorption rates of the (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An composites for the three metals were promoted 145.34, 28.98 and 25.18% and reached 76.84, 73.62 and 94.31%, respectively. Similarly, the adsorption capacities for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) were 162.00, 205.83 and 730.79 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more relevant to the adsorption on the three metals by (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An, and adsorbing As(III) was fitted to the Freundlich isotherm model, while the adsorption on Cd(II) or Pb(II) was related to the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the adsorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) was associated with transformation of hydroxyl groups and precipitation with phosphate. As(III) was adsorbed through exchange between AsO₂^- and SO₄^2- in the (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An composites.

Effect of amendments on contaminated soil of multiple heavy metals and accumulation of heavy metals in plants

The contamination of soil with heavy metals is a severe problem due to adverse impact of heavy metals on environmental safety and human health. It is essential to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals. This study has evaluated the effects of pine biochar, kaolin, and triple super phosphate (TSP) on multiple heavy metals (Ni, Zn, Cu, and Cd) in contaminated soil and accumulation of heavy metals in plants. The amendments can reduce availability of heavy metals in soil by increasing pH, adsorption, complexation, or co-precipitation. Different amendments have variable effects on accumulation of heavy metals in plants and in soil due to its diverse mechanism of stability. The results showed that application of triple super phosphate (TSP) has significant reduced soil Cd exchangeable (EXC) fraction from 58.59 to 21.30%. Bound to carbonates (CAR) fraction decreased from 9.84 to 5.11%, and bound to Fe-Mn oxides (OX) fraction increased from 29.61 to 69.86%. The triple super phosphate (TSP) has the ability to stabilize Cu and especially Cd. However, triple super phosphate (TSP) has enhanced ecological risk of Zn and Ni. Application of pine biochar has significantly enhanced soil pH. The kaolin has significantly reduced EXC fraction of Cd and increased OX fraction of Cu. The amendments and heavy metals have not caused significant effect on SPAD value of Buxus microphylla Siebold & Zucc (B. microphylla). The triple super phosphate (TSP) has significant decreased biomass of B. microphylla and bamboo-williow (Salix sp.) by 24.91 and 57.43%, respectively. Pine biochar and kaolin have increased the accumulation of Zn and Cd in plants. It is concluded that triple super phosphate (TSP) was effective in remediation of Cd and kaolin was effective in remediation of Cd and Cu. Pine biochar was effective in remediation of Cd, Cu, and Zn.

Applying carbon dioxide, plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium and EDTA can enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of ryegrass in a soil polluted with zinc, arsenic, cadmium and lead

This study was conducted to investigate the use of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2), plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium Burkholderia sp. D54 (PGPR) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to enhance the phytoextraction efficiency of ryegrass in response to multiple heavy metal (or metalloid)-polluted soil containing zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). All of the single or combined CO2, PGPR and EDTA treatments promoted ryegrass growth. The stimulation of ryegrass growth by CO2 and PGPR could primarily be attributed to the regulation of photosynthesis rather than decreased levels of Zn, As and Cd in the shoots. Most treatments seemed to reduce the Zn, As and Cd contents in the shoots, which might be associated with enhanced shoot biomass, thus causing a "dilution effect" regarding their levels. The combined treatments seemed to perform better than single treatments in removing Zn, As, Cd and Pb from soil, judging from the larger biomass and relatively higher total amounts (TAs) of Zn, As, Cd and Pb in both the shoots and roots. Therefore, we suggest that the CO2 plus PGPR treatment will be suitable for removing Zn, As, Cd and Pb from heavy metal (or metalloid)-polluted soils using ryegrass as a phytoremediation material.
