Evaluation of a Digital Dementia Registry's IT Architecture After a Three-Year Period in Practice: digiDEM Bayern

INTRODUCTION

The project "digiDEM Bayern" aims to set up a registry with long-term follow-up data on people with dementia and their family caregivers. For that purpose an Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system linked with a Participant Management (PM) system has been established. This study evaluates the acceptance and usability of the IT tools supporting all data management processes in order to further improve the system and associated processes.

METHODS

For this purpose we collected the key numbers of the registry, and used the System Usability Scale (SUS) to evaluate the interactions of the data management systems in a wide area.

RESULTS

Thirty-six research partners (RP) and six study team (ST) members completed the anonymous online survey. The EDC system overall reached an average SUS score of 73.42 and the PM system of 77.92.

DISCUSSION

The two systems fulfil their required task and, therefore, simplify the work of the RP in the data collection process and of the ST during the data quality checks.

CONCLUSION

Integrating the used systems is therefore recommended for registry studies in other medical areas.

An online survey on differences in knowledge and stigma about epilepsy among the Tokyo metropolitan area and non-urban areas in Japan, a post-hoc study

PURPOSE

Extant research elucidating the domains of knowledge and bias on epilepsy has consistently underscored a deficiency in cognizance and an inclination toward bias within non-urban areas. Investigations into geographical disparities concerning epilepsy awareness and prejudice within the Japanese context remain conspicuously absent. To address this lacuna in the literature, we undertook a post-hoc analysis to elucidate the discernible regional differentials in epilepsy awareness and the associated stigma.

METHODS

From July to August 2021, we conducted an internet questionnaire survey for 310 people with epilepsy (PWE) and 213 ordinary people without epilepsy who registered on the database of the Japanese Research Company. We inquired PWE to answer the Epilepsy Self-Stigma Scale (ESSS), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Epilepsy Knowledge Scale (EKS). We inquired to answer ordinary people without epilepsy EKS. We analyzed residential addresses separately for Greater Tokyo and non-urban areas by comparing the degree of knowledge of people with epilepsy and people without epilepsy.

RESULTS

The average knowledge of people with and without epilepsy in the Greater Tokyo area was 39.60 and 28.43 points, although in non-urban areas (nine regions from all over Japan except for the Greater Tokyo, Tokai region, and Kinki region), the knowledge averages were 38.44 and 28.66 points of 100. In addition, self-stigma was highest in the Greater Tokyo area: 22.99 and in non-urban areas: 22.77. An two-way ANOVA with knowledge as the dependent variable and epilepsy diagnosis status and region (Greater Tokyo area/non-urban areas) as the independent variables revealed no interaction between diagnosis and region (F(1,346) = 1.48, η2 = 0.003). Knowledge was significantly higher in PWE than in people without epilepsy, but we could not identify any significant difference between ESSS (t = 0.24, d = 0.03) and RSES (t = 1.16, d = 0.16) in the Greater Tokyo/non-urban areas.

CONCLUSIONS

We obtained specific information about regional differences in the level of knowledge and stigma about epilepsy in Japan. Because Japan underwent educational reforms after World War II and more than 90% of the population received equally advanced education, the results found no regional differences in knowledge and stigma about epilepsy. We believe collecting information about the respondents' birth and upbringing environment and conducting a thorough investigation is necessary in the future.

Exploring the influences of personal attitudes on the intention of continuing online grocery shopping after the COVID-19 pandemic

The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has brought drastic changes in our daily activities. One of these essential activities is grocery shopping. In compliance with the recommended social distancing standards, many people have switched to online grocery shopping or curbside pickup to minimize possible contagion. Although the shift to online grocery shopping is substantial, it is not clear whether this change would last in the long term. This study examines the attributes and underlying attitudes that may influence individuals' future decisions on online grocery shopping. An online survey was conducted in May 2020 in South Florida to collect data for this study. The survey contained a comprehensive set of questions related to respondents' sociodemographic attributes, shopping and trip patterns, technology use, as well as attitudes toward telecommuting and online shopping. A structural equation model (SEM) was applied to examine the intervening effects of observed as well as latent attitude variables on the likelihood of online grocery shopping after the outbreak. The results indicated that those with more experience in using online grocery shopping platforms were more likely to continue purchasing their groceries online. Individuals with positive attitudes toward technology and online grocery shopping in terms of convenience, efficiency, usefulness, and easiness were more likely to adopt online grocery shopping in the future. On the other hand, pro- driving individuals were less likely to substitute online grocery shopping for in-store shopping. The results suggested that attitudinal factors could have substantial impacts on the propensity toward online grocery shopping.

Persistent Genital Arousal in Relationships: A Comparison of Relationship, Sexual, and Psychological Well-Being

BACKGROUND

Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder/Genitopelvic Dysesthesia (PGAD/GPD) is characterized by sensations of physiological genital sexual arousal (and/or other types of genitopelvic dysesthesia) that occur in the absence of subjective feelings of sexual desire.

AIMS

The aim of this study was to compare relationship, sexual, and psychological well-being in partnered individuals with and without distressing symptoms of PGAD/GPD.

METHODS

The sample (N = 65 individuals with vulvas and vaginas, N = 11 individuals with penises) of 152 partnered individuals (N = 76 with and 76 without PGAD/GPD symptoms) participated in a one-time anonymous online survey.

OUTCOMES

The questionnaires assessed relationship satisfaction (Couple Satisfaction Index-Short Form, CSI); sexual satisfaction (Global Measure of Sexual Satisfaction, GMSEX); sexual functioning (Female Sexual Functioning Index, FSFI, or International Index of Erectile Functioning, IIEF); sexual distress (Sexual Distress Scale, SDS); and psychological well-being, as determined by the presence of depression and/or anxiety symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, HADS).

RESULTS

Among individuals with vulvas and vaginas, those with PGAD/GPD symptoms reported significantly lower relationship and sexual satisfaction, greater sexual distress, and more symptoms of depression and anxiety than their counterparts in the control group. In addition, these individuals with PGAD/GPD symptoms also reported significantly worse sexual functioning (arousal, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain), and they were significantly more distressed about each aspect of their sexual functioning difficulties compared to those in the control group. Among the small sample of individuals with penises (N = 11), descriptive analyses revealed that total sexual functioning scores did not differ across the PGAD/GPD symptom and control groups. In addition, 64.5% of the total sample with PGAD/GPD symptoms managed unwanted genital arousal by avoiding sex with their partner, while 55.3% managed their symptoms by having sex with their partner, and some individuals with PGAD/GPD used both strategies.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

The finding that PGAD/GPD symptoms impact relationships indicates that treatment for PGAD/GPD should include consideration of the well-being of one's intimate relationship(s).

STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS

This study added to the small literature on experiences of PGAD/GPD in relationships, and it was the first to assess sexual satisfaction. Limitations include the small sample of individuals with penises, and the cross-sectional, correlational design, which does not allow for causal conclusions to be drawn.

CONCLUSION

Results emphasize the importance of continued research of this population (and their partners) in order to improve diagnosis, intervention, and recognition within the medical community. Attitudes and opinions towards suicidality in professionals working with oncology patients: results from an online survey

Objective

To explore and describe attitudes and opinions towards suicidality in healthcare professionals (HCPs) working with oncological patients.

Methods

A 48-item online questionnaire was developed and distributed to HCPs working with cancer patients. Three hundred fifty-four answered questionnaires were analyzed.

Results

The majority of HCPs reported that they were able to understand why a cancer patient would commit suicide (87.8%) or would seek help from an assisted suicide organization (ASO; 83.9%). The understandable reasons were pain and physical impairments (51.4%), social isolation (19.8%), loss of control and autonomy (18.1%), terminal disease (17.2%), loss of meaning (15.3%), desperation (14.7%), and psychic distress (9.3%). Personal experiences with suicidality lead only 44.8% of HCPs to believe that thereby they would be better able to understand a patients’ wish for suicide. Religion was negatively associated with understanding of suicide and why a cancer patient would seek help from an ASO. Knowledge of suicidality was positively associated with why a cancer patient would seek help from an ASO.

Conclusions

There is still little knowledge in oncology about the relation of HCPs’ attitudes toward suicidality in their patients and how those attitudes influence their behavior, especially care and treatment of patients. More research on this topic is needed. It stands to reason that more education about suicidality in cancer patients seems likely to improve understanding and attitudes and thereby influence care for cancer patients.

COVID-19 Perception, Knowledge, and Preventive Practice: Comparison between South Korea, Ethiopia, and Democratic Republic of Congo

In Africa, the first confirmed case of COVID-19 was reported in Egypt on February 14, 2020. Since then, the number of cases has continued to increase with Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Nigeria, Sudan, Angola, Tanzania, Ghana, and Kenya identified as vulnerable countries. The present study aimed to: 1) identify differences in trust level of COVID-19 diagnosis, recent healthcare utilization experiences, and COVID-19-related knowledge, information, and prevention practices in South Korea, Ethiopia, and DRC; and 2) identify factors influencing trust level in healthcare facilities regarding COVID-19 diagnosis. The present study was cross-sectional. The questionnaire survey was conducted between May 1-14, 2020 using Google forms, and 748 respondents were included in the final analysis. The data collected were analyzed using ANOVA, post- hoc test, and binary logistic regression analysis. South Korea showed higher rate of practice for COVID-19 prevention such as hand washing, mask wearing, and etc. than Ethiopia and DRC. The results showed significant differences with the trust level being 3.129 times higher in respondents from DRC than those from Ethiopia (aOR=3.129, 95% CI: [1.884-5.196], p <.000) and 29.137 times higher in respondents from South Korean than those from Ethiopia (aOR=29.137, 95% CI: [13.869-61.210], p <.000). Gender, age, number of family members, healthcare utilization experience, information, and practice were significant variables. Health education expansion for information and practice about COVID-19 in Ethiopia and DRC is necessary.
