Dynamic Nuclear Polarization in battery materials

The increasing need for portable and large-scale energy storage systems requires development of new, long lasting and highly efficient battery systems. Solid state NMR spectroscopy has emerged as an excellent method for characterizing battery materials. Yet, it is limited when it comes to probing thin interfacial layers which play a central role in the performance and lifetime of battery cells. Here we review how Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) can lift the sensitivity limitation and enable detection of the electrode-electrolyte interface, as well as the bulk of some electrode and electrolyte systems. We describe the current challenges from the point of view of materials development; considering how the unique electronic, magnetic and chemical properties differentiate battery materials from other applications of DNP in materials science. We review the current applications of exogenous and endogenous DNP from radicals, conduction electrons and paramagnetic metal ions. Finally, we provide our perspective on the opportunities and directions where battery materials can benefit from current DNP methodologies as well as project on future developments that will enable NMR investigation of battery materials with sensitivity and selectivity under ambient conditions.

Magnetophoretic mole-ratio method in solvent extraction systems

The magnetophoretic mole-ratio method was applied to the solvent extraction systems of paramagnetic metal ions with bis(2-ethylhexyl)hydrogen phosphate in 2-fluorotoluene. In the extraction of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Tb(III) and Dy(III), the compositions of the extracted metal complexes were determined from the measurements of the magnetophoretic velocity of a single droplet as a function of the mole ratio of the metal ion and the ligand.

Structural and biochemical response of chloroplasts in tolerant and sensitive barley genotypes to drought stress

The aim of this research was to characterize the changes of structural organization of chloroplasts of sensitive (Maresi) and tolerant (Cam/B1) barley genotypes upon soil drought (10days), which was applied in two stages of plant growth, i.e. seedlings and flag leaves. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique was used for the determination of changes in the concentration and nature of long-lived radicals and metal ions (Mn, Fe), measured directly in the structures of fresh leaves, occurring after stress treatment. Stronger variations of EPR parameters were found after drought stress application in the flag-leaf phase and for sensitive genotype. Chloroplasts of Cam/B1 were characterized by a larger surface area and less degradation of their structure during drought stress in comparison to Maresi. The data obtained from Raman spectra showed that better stress tolerance of the genotype was accompanied by greater accumulation of carotenoids in chloroplasts and was correlated with an increase in carotenoid radicals. The increase of the value of the electrokinetic potential (relative to control), which was slightly larger for the chloroplasts of Maresi than of Cam/B1, indicated the chemical reconstruction of the membrane leading to a reduction of their polarity during drought action.

Averaging of nuclear modulation artefacts in RIDME experiments

The presence of artefacts due to Electron Spin Echo Envelope Modulation (ESEEM) complicates the analysis of dipolar evolution data in Relaxation Induced Dipolar Modulation Enhancement (RIDME) experiments. Here we demonstrate that averaging over the two delay times in the refocused RIDME experiment allows for nearly quantitative removal of the ESEEM artefacts, resulting in potentially much better performance than the so far used methods. The analytical equations are presented and analyzed for the case of electron and nuclear spins S=1/2,I=1/2. The presented analysis is also relevant for Double Electron Electron Resonance (DEER) and Chirp-Induced Dipolar Modulation Enhancement (CIDME) techniques. The applicability of the ESEEM averaging approach is demonstrated on a Gd(III)-Gd(III) rigid ruler compound in deuterated frozen solution at Q band (35GHz).
