Capricornutum using interpretable simple structural parameters

Human and environmental ecosystem beings are exposed to multicomponent compound mixtures but the toxicity nature of compound mixtures is not alike to the individual chemicals. This work introduces four models for the prediction of the negative logarithm of median effective concentration (pEC50) of individual chemicals to marine bacteria Photobacterium Phosphoreum (P. Phosphoreum) and algal test species Selenastrum Capricornutum (S. Capricornutum) as well as their mixtures to P. Phosphoreum, and S. Capricornutum. These models provide the simplest approaches for the forecast of pEC50 of some classes of organic compounds from their interpretable structural parameters. Due to the lack of adequate toxicity data for chemical mixtures, the largest available experimental data of individual chemicals (55 data) and their mixtures (99 data) are used to derive the new correlations. The models of individual chemicals are based on two simple structural parameters but chemical mixture models require further interaction terms. The new model's results are compared with the outputs of the best accessible quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) models. Various statistical parameters are done on the new and comparative complex QSAR models, which confirm the higher reliability and simplicity of the new correlations.

A comparative study of structural parameters for spiral groove bearing in centrifugal rotary blood pump

In this work, the hydrodynamic characteristics of spiral groove bearing in centrifugal rotary blood pump is investigated for the cases with different structural parameters. The simulation model is proposed based on the CFD technology and the effectiveness of simulation model is demonstrated by the published data. Then, the pressure, load carrying capacity and friction torque are calculated and the characteristics of pressure distribution are analyzed. It is found that the structural parameters of spiral groove would lead to the complex pressure distribution of blood film and the load carrying capacity also changes at the same time. Moreover, the deep analysis of structural characteristics for spiral groove bearing is conducted based on the orthogonal design method, which could improve the computational efficiency of hydrodynamic behavior of spiral groove bearing. And, the mapping relationship between structural parameter and hydrodynamic performance of bearing preferably is also illustrated.

Bridging the structure gap between pellets in artificial dissolution media and in gastro-intestinal tract in rats

Changes in structure of oral solid dosage forms (OSDF) elementally determine the drug release and its therapeutic effects. In this research, synchrotron radiation X-ray micro-computed tomography was utilized to visualize the 3D structure of enteric coated pellets recovered from the gastrointestinal tract of rats. The structures of pellets in solid state and in vitro compendium media were measured. Pellets in vivo underwent morphological and structural changes which differed significantly from those in vitro compendium media. Thus, optimizations of the dissolution media were performed to mimic the appropriate in vivo conditions by introducing pepsin and glass microspheres in media. The sphericity, pellet volume, pore volume and porosity of the in vivo esomeprazole magnesium pellets in stomach for 2 h were recorded 0.47, 1.55 × 10⁸ μm³, 0.44 × 10⁸ μm³ and 27.6%, respectively. After adding pepsin and glass microspheres, the above parameters in vitro reached to 0.44, 1.64 × 10⁸ μm³, 0.38 × 10⁸ μm³ and 23.0%, respectively. Omeprazole magnesium pellets behaved similarly. The structural features of pellets between in vitro media and in vivo condition were bridged successfully in terms of 3D structures to ensure better design, characterization and quality control of advanced OSDF.

Optics-based compressibility parameter for pharmaceutical tablets obtained with the aid of the terahertz refractive index

The objective of this study is to propose a novel optical compressibility parameter for porous pharmaceutical tablets. This parameter is defined with the aid of the effective refractive index of a tablet that is obtained from non-destructive and contactless terahertz (THz) time-delay transmission measurement. The optical compressibility parameter of two training sets of pharmaceutical tablets with a priori known porosity and mass fraction of a drug was investigated. Both pharmaceutical sets were compressed with one of the most commonly used excipients, namely microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and drug Indomethacin. The optical compressibility clearly correlates with the skeletal bulk modulus determined by mercury porosimetry and the recently proposed terahertz lumped structural parameter calculated from terahertz measurements. This lumped structural parameter can be used to analyse the pattern of arrangement of excipient and drug particles in porous pharmaceutical tablets. Therefore, we propose that the optical compressibility can serve as a quality parameter of a pharmaceutical tablet corresponding with the skeletal bulk modulus of the porous tablet, which is related to structural arrangement of the powder particles in the tablet.

Investigating biofilm structure developing on carriers from lab-scale moving bed biofilm reactors based on light microscopy and optical coherence tomography

This study focused on characterizing the structure of biofilms developed on carriers used in lab-scale moving bed biofilm reactors. Both light microscopy (2D) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were employed to track the biofilm development on carriers of different geometry and under different aeration rates. Biofilm structure was further characterized with respect to average biofilm thickness, biofilm growth velocity, biomass volume, compartment filling degree, surface area, etc. The results showed that carriers with a smaller compartment size stimulated a quick establishment of biofilms. Low aeration rates favored fast development of biofilms. Comparison between the results derived from 2D and 3D images revealed comparable results with respect to average biofilm thickness and compartment filling degree before the carrier compartments were fully willed with biomass. However, 3D imaging with OCT was capable of visualizing and quantifying the heterogeneous structure of biofilms, which cannot be achieved using 2D imaging.
