Ethnopharmacology and biological activities of the Aizoaceae

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

The Aizoaceae is one of the largest succulent plant families. Most members of the family are ornamental and form part of specialist succulent collections. The exceptional diversity of the Aizoaceae is not only limited to its growth forms, habitat, and chemistry, but is also reflected in its many traditional uses. Selected species are well known for their use in traditional medicines, with recent scientific studies validating their biological activity.

AIM OF THE STUDY

Herein, this review aimed to articulate foundational and current global research endeavors related to the traditional uses and pharmacological activities of the Aizoaceae.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Research articles and search terms related to the ethnopharmacology and bioactivities of the Aizoaceae between 1940 and 2022 were evaluated using electronic databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, JSTOR, and Web of Science.

RESULTS

Popular Aizoaceae genera including Mesembryanthemum, Trianthema, and Tetragonia are noted for their cultural value and are key components in herbal medicines for the treatment of a myriad of disorders. Isolated bioactive compounds isolated from selected species demonstrated varied antimicrobial, antioxidant, and neuroprotective functions in basic pharmacological studies. However, most studies lacked reliable correlation to in vivo activity and did not adequately validate the safety and efficacy of potential therapeutic compounds.

CONCLUSIONS

While the cultural and therapeutic value of popular Aizoaceae species have been highlighted in the literature, there remains glaring inconsistencies among other related species. Data deficiency may be ameliorated by further studies focused on taxonomic markers, chemical characterization and underlying molecular mechanisms of activity of a wider pool of species to enhance our knowledge of this hyperdiverse family.

Cadmium uptake by Carpobrotus rossii (Haw.) Schwantes under different saline conditions

Plants used for phytoextraction of heavy metals from contaminated soils with high levels of salinity should be able to accumulate heavy metals and also be tolerant to salinity. Australian native halophyte species Carpobrotus rossii has recently been shown to tolerate and accumulate multiple heavy metals, especially cadmium (Cd). This study examined the effects of salt type and concentration on phytoextraction of Cd in C. rossii. Plants were grown in contaminated soil for 63 days. The addition of salts increased plant growth and enhanced the accumulation of Cd in shoots up to 162 mg kg(-1) which almost doubled the Cd concentration (87 mg kg(-1)) in plants without salt addition. The increased Cd accumulation was ascribed mainly to increased ionic strength in soils due to the addition of salts and resultantly increased the mobility of Cd. In comparison, the addition of Cl(-) resulted in 8-60 % increase in Cd accumulation in shoots than the addition of SO4 (2-) and NO3 (-). The findings suggest that C. rossii is a promising candidate in phytoextraction of Cd-polluted soils with high salinity levels.

Water relations of stem succulent trees in north-central Baja California

Water relations of several stem succulent trees were measured in north-central Baja California in comparisons to other growth forms in the same habitat. Our research concentrated on three stem succulent species (Idria collumnaris, Pachycormus discolor and Bursera microphylla) each with a different succulent stem morphology. The stem succulent trees had 1 to 4 kg H₂O/m³ of trunk while the other trees and shrubs in the same habitat had 0.6 to 0.8 kg H₂O/m³. The diurnal and seasonal variation in leaf water potential was small for the stem succulent species in comparison to deciduous and evergreen species as a consequence of the stem-water, buffering capacity. In addition, the leaf conductance of the stem succulent species was low (60 mmol m^-2 s^-1) and yet, the leaf conductance decreased through the day similar to adjacent evergreen and deciduous species. The leaves of the stem succulent trees lost turgor at low saturated water deficits (0.06 to 0.14), had comparatively high osmotic potentials, and high values of elastic modulus in comparison to adjacent evergreen and deciduous species. The stem acts as an important buffering mechanism allowing for the maintenance of leaf turgor in these stem succulent trees. The low transpiration rates of the stem succulent trees may be a mechanism to minimize leaf saturated water deficit and extend leaf longevity.
