Load-displacement experimental data from axial tensile loading of CFRP-SPCC hybrid laminates

The current paper shows a data set of load-displacement output from axial tensile loading of CFRP-SPCC hybrid laminates. The specimen geometries are cut based on standard procedure from ASTM D-3039. At least 3 positions in each specimen, we measured its width and thickness. Data of the load and displacement were repeated at least 3 samples in each combination of hybrid laminates. Tensile test was conducted with a 1 mm/min of loading rate. The data were recorded from unloading until failure of specimens. The data gives information about the highest load and the behavior of load-displacement in axial tensile loading. By using width and thickness, normalized data can be obtained, the load can be calculated into stress (MPa) unit. The data are useful for researchers and structural engineers that deals with CFRP, SPCC, and hybrid CFRP-SPCC laminates.

Temperature and Pressure Dependences of the Elastic Properties of Tantalum Single Crystals Under <100> Tensile Loading: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Atomistic simulations are capable of providing insights into physical mechanisms responsible for mechanical properties of the transition metal of Tantalum (Ta). By using molecular dynamics (MD) method, temperature and pressure dependences of the elastic properties of Ta single crystals are investigated through <100> tensile loading. First of all, a comparative study between two types of embedded-atom method (EAM) potentials is made in term of the elastic properties of Ta single crystals. The results show that Ravelo-EAM (Physical Review B, 2013, 88: 134101) potential behaves well at different hydrostatic pressures. Then, the MD simulation results based on the Ravelo-EAM potential show that Ta will experience a body-centered-cubic (BCC) to face-centered-cubic (FCC) phase transition before fracture under <100> tensile loading at 1 K temperature, and model size and strain rate have no obvious effects on tensile behaviors of Ta. Next, from the simulation results at the system temperature from 1 to 1500 K, it can be derived that the elastic modulus of E₁₀₀ linearly decrease with the increasing temperature, while the yielding stress decrease with conforming a quadratic polynomial formula. Finally, the pressure dependence of the elastic properties is performed from 0 to 140 GPa and the observations show that the elastic modulus increases with the increasing pressure overall.

Ultrashort echo time T2∗ values decrease in tendons with application of static tensile loads

In early stages of tendon disease, mechanical properties may become altered prior to changes in morphological anatomy. Ultrashort echo time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to directly detect signal from tissues with very short T2 values, including unique viscoelastic tissues such as tendons. The purpose of this study was to use UTE sequences to measure T2^∗, T1 and magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) variations of tendon samples under static tensile loads. Six human peroneal tendons were imaged before and under static loading using UTE sequences on a clinical 3T MRI scanner. Tendons were divided into two static tensile loading groups: group A that underwent one-step loading (15N) and group B that underwent two-step loading (15 and 30N). The T2^∗, T1 and MTR variations were investigated in two selected section regions of interest (ROIs), including whole and core sections. Mean T2^∗ values for the first step of loading (groups A and B) in both whole section and core section ROIs were significantly decreased by 13±7% (P=0.028) and 16±5% (P=0.017), respectively. For the second loading step (group B), there was a consistent, but non-significant reduction in T2^∗ value by 9±2% (P=0.059) and 7±5% (P=0.121) for whole and core sections, respectively. Mean T1 did not show any consistent changes for either loading steps (P>0.05). Mean MTR increased slightly, but not significantly for both loading steps (P>0.05). Significant differences were found only in T2^∗ values of tendons by static tensile load application. Therefore, T2^∗ monitoring during loading is suggested for quantitative investigation of the tendons biomechanics.

A constitutive model for mechanical response characterization of pumpkin peel and flesh tissues under tensile and compressive loadings

Enhancing quality of food products and reducing volume of waste during mechanical operations of food industry requires a comprehensive knowledge of material response under loadings. While research has focused on mechanical response of food material, the volume of waste after harvesting and during processing stages is still considerably high in both developing and developed countries. This research aims to develop and evaluate a constitutive model of mechanical response of tough skinned vegetables under postharvest and processing operations. The model focuses on both tensile and compressive properties of pumpkin flesh and peel tissues where the behaviours of these tissues vary depending on various factors such as rheological response and cellular structure. Both elastic and plastic response of tissue were considered in the modelling process and finite elasticity combined with pseudo elasticity theory was applied to generate the model. The outcomes were then validated using the published results of experimental work on pumpkin flesh and peel under uniaxial tensile and compression. The constitutive coefficients for peel under tensile test was α = 25.66 and β = -18.48 Mpa and for flesh α = -5.29 and β = 5.27 Mpa. under compression the constitutive coefficients were α = 4.74 and β = -1.71 Mpa for peel and α = 0.76 and β = -1.86 Mpa for flesh samples. Constitutive curves predicted the values of force precisely and close to the experimental values. The curves were fit for whole stress versus strain curve as well as a section of curve up to bio yield point. The modelling outputs had presented good agreement with the empirical values and the constructive curves exhibited a very similar pattern to the experimental curves. The presented constitutive model can be applied next to other agricultural materials under loading in future.
