Toward the eco-friendly cosmetic cleansing assisted by the micro-bubbly jet

While numerous types of chemical cosmetic cleansers have been presented, those with sensitive skin may still experience some irritation while using them. Moreover, the environmental issue of chemical agents has been documented repeatedly. To address these, we suggest the potential application of a micro-sized bubble-laden water jet to cleanse the cosmetics without (or less) using chemical detergents. We devised a venturi-type nozzle with a mesh and air holes capable of generating massive fine bubbles. By testing with the foundation and lip tint (known to be highly adhesive) coated on the synthetic leather and artificial skin surfaces, we measured that the cleansing performance of the bubbly jet is much better (even without the chemical agent) than the single-phase liquid jet. As a mechanism for enhanced removal, it is understood that the greater kinetic energy of the jet due to the acceleration of the effective liquid-air mixture flow and the direct bubble-cosmetic collisions play essential roles. We believe that the present results will spur the development of environment-friendly cleaning methods.

Simultaneous hydrodynamic cavitation and nanosecond pulse discharge plasma enhanced by oxygen injection

A novel Hydrodynamic Cavitation-Assisted Oxygen Plasma (HCAOP) process, which employs a venturi tube and oxygen injection, has been developed for enhancing the production and utilization of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the degradation of organic pollutants. This study has systematically investigated the fluid characteristics and discharge properties of the gas-liquid two-phase body in the venturi tube. The hydraulic cavitation two-phase body discharge is initiated by the bridging of the cavitation cloud between the electrodes. The discharge mode transitions from diffuse to spark to corona as the oxygen flow rate increases. The spark discharge has the highest current and discharge energy. Excessive oxygen results in the change of the flow from bubbly to annular and a subsequent decrease in discharge energy. The effects of cavitation intensity, oxygen flow rate, and power polarity on discharge characteristics and ·OH production were evaluated using terephthalic acid as a fluorescent probe. It was found that injecting 3 standard liter per minute (SLPM) of oxygen increased the ·OH yield by 6 times with only 1.2 times increase in power, whereas<0.5 SLPM of oxygen did not improve the ·OH yield due to lower breakdown voltage. Negative polarity voltage increased the breakdown voltage and ·OH yield due to asymmetric density and pressure distribution in the throat tube. This polarity effect was explained by numerical simulation. Using indigo carmine (E132) as a model pollutant, the HCAOP process degraded 20 mg/L of dye in 5 L water within 2 min following a first-order reaction. The lowest electric energy per order (EEO) was 0.26 (kWh/m3/order). The HCAOP process is a highly efficient flow-type advanced oxidation process with potential industrial applications.

Combined system for wastewater treatment: ozonization and coagulation via tannin-based agent for harvesting microalgae by dissolved air flotation

This study evaluated the performance of urban wastewater treatment in pilot-plant by an integrated system consisting of anaerobic reactor, microalgae cultivation, Venturi tube ozone recirculation, coagulation/flocculation with tannin-based agent natural coagulant, and dissolved air flotation (DAF). Ozone concentrations (without ozone, 0.13 and 0.25 mg O₃/mg of biomass) and tannin dosages (65, 85 and 105 mg/L) were evaluated regarding microalgae separation and their influences on wastewater treatment performance. During the experiments, it was verified that the treatment efficiency increased when ozone was applied and with higher tannin dosages. The best results were found with 0.13 mg O₃/mg of biomass and 105 mg/L of tannin, obtaining excellent removal of turbidity removal (99.4%), apparent colour at 420 nm (94.5%), TN (83.2%), N-NH₃ (100%), TOC (86.8%), BOD₅ (86.5%) and COD (100%), 47.6% reduction in electric conductivity, 46.1% in TDS, 66.4% TP removal for the integrated system and 84% microalgae biomass recovery were obtained. Our results showed that the system proved to be a viable alternative for the treatment of urban wastewater and the recovery of microalgae through the insertion of ozone via Venturi tube combined with tannin-based agent.

Solid lipid nanoparticles by Venturi tube: Preparation, Characterization and Optimization by Box-Behnken design

In this study, a Venturi tube is proposed as an efficient static mixer incorporated into a continuous recirculation system for obtaining solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) of monoolein. The device's operating principle consists of producing a turbulent flux in the throat of a Venturi tube. Taking advantage of this effect SLN of monoolein were obtained by rapid diffusion of the organic phase into the aqueous phase (stabilizer), causing lipid aggregation on the nanometric particles. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the critical factors for obtaining the SLN of monoolein in order to control the independent variables of this methodology. A Box-Behnken design was used to study such independent variables (factors) as injection rate (X1), recirculation rate (X2), and stabilizer (X3) on the dependent variables; namely, process yield (Y1), particle size (Y2), polydispersity index (Y3) and zeta potential (Y4). The optimum operating conditions for preparing SLN were: injection rate, 1.6 mL/min; recirculation rate, 4.2 L/min; and stabilizer concentration, 1.0 w/v, with a value of D = 0.84. The predicted responses of the particle size were 212.0 nm, with a polydispersity index of 0.21, a zeta potential of -19.9 mV, and a process yield of 96.0%. Under the same operating condition, SLN formed with different lipids and stabilizers were obtained with nanometric size and zeta potential of ∼ -30.0 mV. Results show that the Venturi tube method (VTM) is an innovative and versatile technique for preparing SLN of nanometric size with high process yields through a turbulent flow.

Ultrasonic-assisted production of precipitated calcium carbonate particles from desulfurization gypsum

This study aimed to investigate the effect of ultrasonic application on the production of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) particles from desulfurization gypsum via direct mineral carbonation method using conventional and venturi tube reactors in the presence of different alkali sources (NaOH, KOH and NH₄OH). The venturi tube was designed to determine the effect of ultrasonication on PCC production. Ultrasonic application was performed three times (before, during, and after PCC production) to evaluate its exact effect on the properties of the PCC particles. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Atomic force microscope (AFM), specific surface area (SSA), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), and particle size analyses were performed. Results revealed the strong influence of the reactor types on the nucleation rate of PCC particles. The presence of Na⁺ or K⁺ ions in the production resulted in producing PCC particles containing only calcite crystals, while a mixture of vaterite and calcite crystals was observed if NH₄⁺ ions were present. The use of ultrasonic power during PCC production resulted in producing cubic calcite rather than vaterite crystals in the presence of all ions. It was determined that ultrasonic power should be conducted in the venturi tube before PCC production to obtain PCC particles with superior properties (uniform particle size, nanosized crystals, and high SSA value). The resulting PCC particles in this study can be suitably used in paint, paper, and plastic industries according to the ASTM standards.

Theoretical modeling and experimental validation of hydrodynamic cavitation reactor with a Venturi tube for sugarcane bagasse pretreatment

A hydrodynamic cavitation reactor with a Venturi tube was modeled through a computational fluid dynamics approach in order to evaluate the influence of pressure ratio, diameter and length of the throat zone. A cavitation reactor equipped with a Venturi tube was built in accordance with the computational modeling results. Hydrodynamic cavitation assisted alkaline pretreatment was performed to evaluate the influence of NaOH concentration (1-5%), the weight to volume percentage of solid in liquid (1-5%) and the reaction time (20-60 min.) in the lignin removal. The response surface methodology was used to optimize pretreatment parameters for maximum lignin removal. The optimal condition was 4.90% of NaOH and a solid weight percentage in liquid of 2.03% in 58.33 min, resulting in a maximum removal of 56.01% of lignin. Hydrodynamic cavitation can be easy to employ, an efficient and promissory pretreatment tool.

Preparation of nanodispersions by solvent displacement using the Venturi tube

The Venturi tube (VT) is an apparatus that produces turbulence which is taken advantage of to produce nanoparticles (NP) by solvent displacement. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of this device for preparing NP of poly-ε-caprolactone. Response Surface Methodology was used to determine the effect of the operating conditions and optimization. The NP produced by VT were characterized by Dynamic Light-Scattering to determine their particle size distribution (PS) and polydispersity index (PDI). Results showed that the Reynolds number (Re) has a strong effect on both PS and process yield (PY).The turbulence regime is key to the efficient formation of NP. The optimal conditions for obtaining NP were a polymer concentration of 1.6 w/v, a recirculation rate of 4.8 L/min, and a stabilizer concentration of 1.1 w/v. The predicted response of the PY was 99.7%, with a PS of 333 nm, and a PDI of 0.2. Maintaining the same preparation conditions will make it possible to obtain NP using other polymers with similar properties. Our results show that VT is a reproducible and versatile method for manufacturing NP, and so may be a feasible method for industrial-scale nanoprecipitation production.

Fabrication of a micro-fluid gathering tool for the gastrointestinal juice sampling function of a versatile capsular endoscope

This paper presents a micro-fluid gathering tool for a versatile capsular endoscope that employs a solid chemical propellant, azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The proposed tool consists of a micro-heater, an AIBN matrix, a Venturi tube, a reservoir, an inlet, and an outlet. The micro-heater heats the AIBN matrix to be decomposed into by-products and nitrogen gas. This nitrogen gas generates negative pressure passing through the Venturi tube. The generated negative pressure inhales a target fluid from around the inlet into the reservoir. All the parts are designed to be embedded inside a cylindrical shape with a diameter of 17 mm and a height of 2.3 mm in order to integrate it into a versatile developmental capsular endoscope without any scaledown. Two sets of the proposed tools are fabricated and tested: one is made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and the other is made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). In performance comparisons, the PDMS gathering tool can withstand a stronger pulling force, and the PMMA gathering tool requires a less negative pressure for inhaling the same target fluid. Due to the instant and full activation of the thin AIBN matrix, both types of gathering tool show analogous performance in the sample gathering evaluation. The gathered volume is approximately 1.57 μL using approximately 25.4 μL of AIBN compound.
