Probability Distributions Describing Qubit-State Superpositions

We discuss qubit-state superpositions in the probability representation of quantum mechanics. We study probability distributions describing separable qubit states. We consider entangled states on the example of a system of two qubits (Bell states) using the corresponding superpositions of the wave functions associated with these states. We establish the connection with the properties and structure of entangled probability distributions.

Correspondence Rules for SU(1,1) Quasidistribution Functions and Quantum Dynamics in the Hyperbolic Phase Space

We derive the explicit differential form for the action of the generators of the SU(1,1) group on the corresponding s-parametrized symbols. This allows us to obtain evolution equations for the phase-space functions on the upper sheet of the two-sheet hyperboloid and analyze their semiclassical limits. Dynamics of quantum systems with SU(1,1) symmetry governed by compact and non-compact Hamiltonians are discussed in both quantum and semiclassical regimes.

Measurement of the Temperature Using the Tomographic Representation of Thermal States for Quadratic Hamiltonians

The Wigner and tomographic representations of thermal Gibbs states for one- and two-mode quantum systems described by a quadratic Hamiltonian are obtained. This is done by using the covariance matrix of the mentioned states. The area of the Wigner function and the width of the tomogram of quantum systems are proposed to define a temperature scale for this type of states. This proposal is then confirmed for the general one-dimensional case and for a system of two coupled harmonic oscillators. The use of these properties as measures for the temperature of quantum systems is mentioned.

The Phase Space Model of Nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics

We focus on several questions arising during the modelling of quantum systems on a phase space. First, we discuss the choice of phase space and its structure. We include an interesting case of discrete phase space. Then, we introduce the respective algebras of functions containing quantum observables. We also consider the possibility of performing strict calculations and indicate cases where only formal considerations can be performed. We analyse alternative realisations of strict and formal calculi, which are determined by different kernels. Finally, two classes of Wigner functions as representations of states are investigated.

Equilibrium Wigner Function for Fermions and Bosons in the Case of a General Energy Dispersion Relation

The approach based on the Wigner function is considered as a viable model of quantum transport which allows, in analogy with the semiclassical Boltzmann equation, to restore a description in the phase-space. A crucial point is the determination of the Wigner function at the equilibrium which stems from the equilibrium density function. The latter is obtained by a constrained maximization of the entropy whose formulation in a quantum context is a controversial issue. The standard expression due to Von Neumann, although it looks a natural generalization of the classical Boltzmann one, presents two important drawbacks: it is conserved under unitary evolution time operators, and therefore cannot take into account irreversibility; it does not include neither the Bose nor the Fermi statistics. Recently a diagonal form of the quantum entropy, which incorporates also the correct statistics, has been proposed in Snoke et al. (2012) and Polkovnikov (2011). Here, by adopting such a form of entropy, with an approach based on the Bloch equation, the general condition that must be satisfied by the equilibrium Wigner function is obtained for general energy dispersion relations, both for fermions and bosons. Exact solutions are found in particular cases. They represent a modulation of the solution in the non degenerate situation.

Variations à la Fourier-Weyl-Wigner on Quantizations of the Plane and the Half-Plane

Any quantization maps linearly function on a phase space to symmetric operators in a Hilbert space. Covariant integral quantization combines operator-valued measure with the symmetry group of the phase space. Covariant means that the quantization map intertwines classical (geometric operation) and quantum (unitary transformations) symmetries. Integral means that we use all resources of integral calculus, in order to implement the method when we apply it to singular functions, or distributions, for which the integral calculus is an essential ingredient. We first review this quantization scheme before revisiting the cases where symmetry covariance is described by the Weyl-Heisenberg group and the affine group respectively, and we emphasize the fundamental role played by Fourier transform in both cases. As an original outcome of our generalisations of the Wigner-Weyl transform, we show that many properties of the Weyl integral quantization, commonly viewed as optimal, are actually shared by a large family of integral quantizations.

Synchronization of optical photons for quantum information processing

A fundamental element of quantum information processing with photonic qubits is the nonclassical quantum interference between two photons when they bunch together via the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect. Ultimately, many such photons must be processed in complex interferometric networks. For this purpose, it is essential to synchronize the arrival times of the flying photons and to keep their purities high. On the basis of the recent experimental success of single-photon storage with high purity, we demonstrate for the first time the HOM interference of two heralded, nearly pure optical photons synchronized through two independent quantum memories. Controlled storage times of up to 1.8 μs for about 90 events per second were achieved with purities that were sufficiently high for a negative Wigner function confirmed with homodyne measurements.

Quantum Blobs

Quantum blobs are the smallest phase space units of phase space compatible with the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics and having the symplectic group as group of symmetries. Quantum blobs are in a bijective correspondence with the squeezed coherent states from standard quantum mechanics, of which they are a phase space picture. This allows us to propose a substitute for phase space in quantum mechanics. We study the relationship between quantum blobs with a certain class of level sets defined by Fermi for the purpose of representing geometrically quantum states.
