Migration and transformation behaviors of antibiotics in water-sediment system under simulated light and wind waves

Antibiotics can generally be detected in the water-sediment systems of lakes. However, research on the migration and transformation of antibiotics in water-sediment systems based on the influences of light and wind waves is minimal. To address this research gap, we investigated the specific impacts of light and wind waves on the migration and transformation of three antibiotics, norfloxacin (NOR), trimethoprim (TMP), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), under simulated light and wind waves disturbance conditions in a water-sediment system from Taihu Lake, China. In the overlying water, NOR was removed the fastest, followed by TMP and SMX. Compared to the no wind waves groups, the disturbance of big wind waves reduced the proportion of antibiotics in the overlying water. The contributions of light and wind waves to TMP and SMX degradation were greater than those of microbial degradation. However, the non-biological and biological contributions of NOR to degradation were almost equal. Wind waves had a significant impact on the microbial community changes in the sediment, especially in Methylophylaceae. These results verified the influence of light and wind waves on the migration and transformation of antibiotics, and provide assistance for the risk of antibiotic occurrence in water and sediments.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of suspended particulate matter in the Bohai Sea, China over the past decade from the space perspective

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration is an important biogeochemical parameter for water quality assessment and morphodynamic studies. In this study, the four recent SPM retrieval models developed for Bohai Sea were evaluated using in situ datasets, and the best performing model was selected to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of SPM in Bohai Sea from 2011 to 2021 based on 1164 satellite imageries. The results indicated that the satellite-derived SPM concentrations had a high accuracy (R² = 0.86, relative percentage difference = 33.71 %). The SPM concentrations in the Bohai Sea demonstrated a significant decadal decreasing trend (0.503 mg/L/yr), and the distribution area with low SPM (<30 mg/L) increased by 3.29 % annually. The southern Bohai Sea declined observably, involving the Bohai Bay (2.07 mg/L/yr), Laizhou Bay (1.916 mg/L/yr), and central Bohai Sea (-0.661 mg/L/yr). Monthly SPM was characterized by significant seasonality. The SPM circulation pattern in the Bohai Strait was generally northerly inflow and southerly outflow. Significant wave heights (Hs) dominated the SPM variations and explained 58.9 % of monthly SPM changes in the Bohai Sea. The strong waves reduction was the main reason for the decadal decline of SPM concentrations. Wind waves associated with monsoons controlled seasonal variations of SPM and promoted the output in winter through the southern Bohai Strait. Storms could cause a sharp increase in SPM concentrations, especially in Bohai Bay and Laizhou Bay which were highly sensitive to northerly winds and strong waves. After the storm ended, the effects of short-duration storm might fade away within a few hours, while that of long-duration storm could last for 2-3 days. High sediment transport from Yellow River (>500 × 10⁴ t/M) controlled 74.8 % of monthly SPM variations within 3-km area off the estuary, 45 % of that within 5-km area, and 28.4 % of that within 10-km area.

Evaluation of artificial grooves for collecting bottom sediment pollutants in Lake Chaohu, China

Internal loadings of nutrients play important roles in the eutrophication of shallow lakes. The effective removal of sediments rich in nutrients is of great importance for lake management and the abatement of eutrophication. In this study, grooves were installed in the bottom of Lake Chaohu. Approximately 8.5 months later, the chlorophyll a, organic matter, and total nitrogen contents in the sediment inside the grooves were 1.5-3.0 times, 1.2-1.8 times, and 1.3-1.6 times higher, respectively, than those in the surrounding sediments, and the total phosphorus contents in the bottom grooves were slightly lower than those in the surrounding sediments. The thicknesses of the sediments with high chlorophyll a, organic matter, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus contents in the grooves were 5-15 times greater than those of the surrounding sediments with high pollution contents. Internal pollution was captured in the grooves. The active hydrodynamic process was an important factor related to the effectiveness of this method and is conducive to the transport of polluted sediments to the bottom grooves where they are collected. Bottom grooves have broad application potential for the removal of sediments rich in nutrients from shallow-water lakes; these grooves can be widely used in areas that experience large disturbances from wind waves, have water flows gathering in or entering the lake, or have thin sediments with high pollution contents. This study provides scientific guidance for the control and management of internal pollution in shallow lakes.

Responses of alkaline phosphatase activity to wind-driven waves in a large, shallow lake: Implications for phosphorus availability and algal blooms

Phosphorus is a vital nutrient for algal growth, thus, a better understanding of phosphorus availability is essential to mitigate harmful algal blooms in lakes. Wind waves are a ubiquitous characteristic of lake ecosystems. However, its effects on the cycling of organic phosphorus and its usage by phytoplankton remain poorly elucidated in shallow eutrophic lakes. A mesocosm experiment was carried out to investigate the responses of alkaline phosphatase activity fractions to wind waves in large, shallow, eutrophic Lake Taihu. Results showed that wind-driven waves induced the release of alkaline phosphatase and phosphorus from the sediment, and dramatically enhanced phytoplanktonic alkaline phosphatase activity. However, compared to the calm conditions, bacterial and dissolved alkaline phosphatase activity decreased in wind-wave conditions. Consistently, the gene copies of Microcystis phoX increased but bacterial phoX decreased under wind-wave conditions. The ecological effects of these waves on phosphorus and phytoplankton likely accelerated the biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus and promoted phytoplankton production in Lake Taihu. This study provides an improved current understanding of phosphorus availability and the phosphorus strategies of plankton in shallow, eutrophic lakes.

The contribution of wind wave changes on diminishing ice period in Lake Pyhäjärvi during the last half-century

To address the contribution of long-term wind wave changes on diminishing ice period in Northern European lakes, an in situ observation of wind waves was conducted to calibrate a wind-wave numerical model for Lake Pyhäjärvi, which is the largest lake in southwest Finland. Using station-measured hydrometeorological data from 1963 to 2013 and model-simulated wind waves, correlation and regression analyses were conducted to assess the changing trend and main influences on ice period. Ice period in Lake Pyhäjärvi decreased significantly over 51 years (r = 0.47, P < 0.01). The analysis of main hydrometeorological factors to ice period showed that the significant air temperature rise is the main contributor for the diminishing of ice period in the lake. Besides air temperature, wind-induced waves can also weaken lake ice by increasing water mixing and lake ice breakage. The regression indicated that mean significant wave height in December and April was negatively related to ice period (r = - 0.48, P < 0.01). These results imply that long-term changes of wind waves related to climate change should be considered to fully understand the reduction of aquatic ice at high latitudes.

Effects of internal loading on phosphorus distribution in the Taihu Lake driven by wind waves and lake currents

Wind-driven sediment resuspension exerts significant effects on the P behavior in shallow lake ecosystems. In this study, a comprehensive dynamic phosphorus (P) model that integrates hydrodynamic, wind wave and sediment transport is proposed to assess the importance of internal P cycling due to sediment resuspension on water column P levels. The primary contribution of the model is detailed modeling and rigorous coupling of sediment and P dynamics. The proposed model is applied to predict the P behavior in the shallow Taihu Lake, which is the third largest lake in China, and quantitatively estimate the effects of wind waves and lake currents on P release and distribution. Both the prevailing southeast winds in summer and northwest winds in winter are applied for the simulation, and different wind speeds of 5 m/s and 10 m/s are also considered. Results show that sediment resuspension and the resulting P release have a dominant effect on P levels in Taihu Lake, and likely similar shallow lakes. Wind-driven waves at higher wind speeds significantly enhance sediment resuspension and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Total P concentration in the water column is also increased but not in proportion to the SSC. The different lake circulations resulting from the different prevailing wind directions also affect the distribution of suspended sediment and P around the lake ultimately influencing where eutrophication is likely to occur. The proposed model demonstrates that internal cycling in the lake is a dominant factor in the lake P and must be considered when trying to manage water quality in this and similar lakes. The model is used to demonstrate the potential effectiveness of remediation of an area where historical releases have led to P accumulation on overall lake quality.
